During steelmaking, one important factor for production efficiency is the free opening of the ladle nozzle during continuous casting. Free opening occurs when the well filler sand and the steel flow freely when the slide gate is opened. Well filler sands are used for the slide gate of a ladle to separate the slide gate refractory and the molten steel. The well filler sand is partially sintered by the heat of the molten metal, which can result in the ladle nozzle failing to open if the sand is not sintered to an appropriate extent. It is therefore of great importance that the sintering behaviour of well filler sand is understood. We studied the effect of the well filler sand chemistry on its sintering properties. Samples of well filler sand with various chemical compositions were sintered in a high-temperature chamber furnace. Quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICPOES), and wavelength dispersive spectrometry (WDS) by electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) were used to analyse the various well filler sand mixes. Points of analysis were indicated on backscattered electron (BSE) micrographs. Quantitative element mapping was undertaken by energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Thermodynamic calculations in FactSage predicted the percentage liquid phase present for the various well filler sand compositions at equilibrium conditions. The results of this work show that the degree of sintering of chromite-silica well filler sand depends strongly on the silica content. The amount of liquid phase formed increases with increasing silica content.

On 24th November, 1982, Mr L. W. P. van den Bosch was inducted as the President for 1982/1983 of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa, which represents more than 40 scientific, professional, and technical bodies. Lynne Wilson Pearson van den Bosch was born at Senekal in the Orange Free State on 11th February, 1921. He was educated at the Hoer Volkskool, Heidelberg, and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained the B.sc. degree in mining engineering.

Hydrogen peroxide is gaining acceptance as a reagent for the treatment of mining effluents containing cyanide. In this paper some of the chemical and environmental aspects of treatment with hydrogen peroxide are discussed, and one way of improving the economics of the process is described. This is known as selective detoxification, which involves the oxidation of the less stable (cyanide) complexes while not affecting the more stable complexes, which contribute very little to the concentration of free cyanide or to the toxicity of the treated water.

Tornados are the most violent weather events in the world, and we have all seen the forces and phenomena created by tornados in nature. Airgrinder AB has been working with a material treatment technology, which most easily could be described as an artificial tornado. The process consists principally of one air fan providing a high-velocity airstream that enters a mechanical cyclone. When the gas enters the cyclone, an outer vortex is created. This outer vortex rotates next to the cyclone wall, and at the bottom of the cyclone funnel the gas stream is turned and an inner vortex is created. The control of the air flow is tuned by a special device on top of the cyclone. The gas outlet is at the top of the cyclone and the material outlet at the bottom. The material is fed through a feeding device into the air stream channel prior to the inlet into the cyclone. The process is basically an improved grinding and dehydrating system, which is very efficient and environmentally friendly and can even be employed with very sticky materials. Also due to its rotating comminution, the material particles become rounded during grinding, hence more free flowing and easier to handle. MEFOS has already tested more than 30 different applications in the pilot equipment. The materials tested range from metallurgical slags containing 2?3% moisture to sludges with up to70% moisture. This technology has a potentially strong impact on mineral beneficiation, including the drying of sticky fine-grained materials, improved and selective gas scrubbing and the manufacture of free flowing powders.

Nickel is recovered as a by-product of the platinum-producing process operated by Anglo Platinum. The metal is mined mainly as sulphide minerals contained in platinum ores. These pass through the concentrating, smelting and converting process route and nickel is finally recovered by electrowinning. Smelting of the concentrated ore in the electric furnace produces a melt with a high slag to matte ratio. The resulting furnace slag is granulated and later milled and floated to recover matte. A project was initiated to investigate the distribution of nickel in the slag in order to improve recovery. Slag samples were examined using a combination of chemical and mineralogical techniques. The granulated slag was found to consist mainly of a silicate glass phase, which reflects the composition of the molten slag in the furnace. Nickel occurs as free matte granules, as matte phases locked inside the glass, and in the glass phase itself. Whereas nickel in the matte is as sulphide, most of the nickel in the glass phase appears to be oxide- bound(i.e. in solid solution). Milled slag as flotation feed showed recovery-limiting features such as free matte with oxidized surfaces and unliberated matte inclusions in the slag. The biggest nickel losses, assuming no tapping problems, are in the glass phase solid solution. Only around 40% of nickel would be recovered from the slag, even under ideal conditions. Spoon and pot slag samples were also examined to see if casting and crushing would improve recovery. Although larger and therefore more easily recovered matte phases formed, nickel partitioned into crystalline silicate phases, limiting the maximum theoretical nickel recovery to 70%.

In some mining situations, backfills are not only required to be free-standing but are also expected to provide hangingwall support. It may therefore be specified that the backfill withstand a certain calculated stress within a given time. Given the materials available, the choice of backfill composition is not always straightforward, and an approach to the evaluation of cemented tailings backfill is therefore proposed. The general use of such a method will greatly assist in both the scientific analysis of the material properties for industry-wide purposes of comparison and decision-making as regards the choice of fill.

A pilot plant paste thickening campaign was conducted at the Anglo Platinum Limited Mogalakwena South Concentrator plant in South Africa in order to determine the water saving capability of P&TT technology. In the process a simple water consumption model was developed for estimating the overall water consumption of the mine. The model indicates that for the Mogalakwena tailings, significant water savings are achieved by discharging thickened tailing directly to the TSF but only at densities where free water release at the TSF is close to zero. "Although oxygen is widely employed as the oxidant of choice in gold leaching by cyanide, its low aqueous solubility presents some drawbacks in practical application; hydrogen peroxide has therefore been considered as a possible alternative. The aim of this investigation was to study the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which generates an oxidizing intermediate species, and to understand its effect on cyanide destruction. Operating conditions that facilitated the effective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide were established by varying the pH and catalyst type and concentration. The oxidizing intermediate, detected using an indirect technique, was found to be the hydroxyl radical (OH?). OH? is commonly generated in acidic solutions, but this work demonstrated that it is also produced at the alkaline pH values necessary for cyanide gold leaching. The effects of free and complexed iron and copper catalysts on the oxidation and consumption of hydrogen peroxide and cyanide were also investigated. It was shown that the cyano complexes of Fe(II) and Cu(I) are also effective as decomposition catalysts. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 0.01 M decreased the free cyanide concentration, which was attributed to the probable formation of the cyanate anion (CNO-). Although cyanide consumption increased due to its oxidation in the presence of OH?, excessive cyanide consumption in the presence of copper was attributed primarily to its complexation by the unstable copper(I) cyanide species. Rate constants for the decompositions of H2O2 and cyanide by ferrocyanide and copper cyanide were calculated; the latter was identified as being a better catalyst. Tests were carried out in a Hallimond microflotation cell and a Denver D12 cell on typical residue material from a gold mine in the Orange Free State (South Africa), in which 50 per cent of the kerogen was larger than 100 µm in size. Although kerogen is naturally hydrophobic, the observed unexpectedly poor flotation reponse may be due to occlusion of the kerogen by a slime coating and subsequent depression of the slime by guar gums. The recovery of gold from samples spiked with kerogen increased, with no significant reduction in grades, when a petroleum-based collector and tetrasodiumpyrophosphate (a dispersant) were used.

Evaluation errors and value frequency distribution models of the gold ore bodies in the Witwatersrand and Free State systems are reviewed. It is found that the low-grade sections of the data are prone to the largest evaluation errors, and that an understanding of the shape of the value frequency distribution is essential to the calculation of mean grade. The evaluation of a mineral process for a particular ore requires attention to mil-feed sampling, sample processing, and monitoring. In particular, the calculation of a representative mass of mill-feed sample (Ms) should take account of size-by-size value variance. Alternative Ms models are discussed.

It is shown that, when a flat-bottomed indentor is pressed into the surface of a strong rock, the normal force necessary to cause failure of the rock is reduced substantially if a shear force is applied to the indentor. A mathematical analysis is described, which shows that higher stresses are induced in an elastic material close to the free surface of the material ahead of a punch when a shear force together with a normal force is applied to the punch. Therefore, failure of the material would occur with lower forces applied to the punch. Stress trajectories show that fractures develop in the rock along lines of maximum principal stresses.

The program, which has a unique underground and surface industrial scale facility, is involved in many multi-partner projects, like hydrogen fuel cell applications, electrification and hydraulification of underground mines, reduction of noise and vibration, miner location device, explosive-free blasting and hoisting. The paper presents an overview of the Mine Mechanisation and Automation Program of Natural Resources Canada and some of the main projects.

Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research into the use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics in the mining industry. Much of this has led to developed applications including training simulators and accident re-construction. One other area where there is considerable potential for virtual reality is that of mining ergonomics. This paper identifies those common ergonomic limitations associated with mining equipment that can be effectively modelled using VR techniques. From this, two simple models have been developed namely (i)remote control continuous miner operation and (ii) free steered vehicle sightlines, which demonstrate the practical use of VR in this area.

Coal desulphurization by flotation is often difficult due to the surface oxidation of coal pyrite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were adopted to obtain detailed information about the surface oxidation of pyrite. Fresh pyrite surfaces were found to be hydrophilic, and to turn hydrophobic after initial oxidation, with oxidized products such as polysulphide FeSx and free sulphur. The oxidized products on the pyrite surface were reduced by an electrochemical method, returning the surfaces to a hydrophilic state and thus increasing the separating efficiency of coal from pyrite by flotation.
