We present an electromagnetic method taken from the well known radiogoniometer that allows us to locate at the surface of the ground the vertical axis of a magnetic antenna transmitter buried at a depth h in the earth. The method and the equipment achieved are called R. E. P. E. (Relevé Electromagnétique de Points Enterrés). They are daily used to accurately survey old quarries by using triangulation instruments at the surface of the earth rather than in galeries where the setting difficulties considerably reduce their accuracy and increase the work length. The results of several surveys allow us to give the optimum working conditions of the instruments and show that, when the transmitter is at a 20 meters depth, its position is known at the surface with an error lower than 1 centimeter. The power transmitter is of about 8 watts and we can find its location with an error smaller than 1 meter when buried at a depth of about 100 meters. This equipment may be successfully used for location of subsurface miners. The space surrounding the transmitter must then be free from ferromagnetic bodies.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove, grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 2 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

Over 5 million lb of chromium, 1 million lb of nickel, and 90,000 lb of molybdenum are lost annually in the dusts generated in the production of stain-less steel. Additional losses of these metals in the form of mill scale and grinding swarf may be double the dust losses. This Bureau of Mines report describes a process for recovering these and other metals in the form of an alloy steel suitable for recycling. Zinc and lead, when present in the wastes, are recovered as byproducts in the form of oxide fumes. The laboratory-scale process (10-to 25-lb charges) recovers up to 95 pct of the chromium, 100 pct of the nickel, and 100 pct of the iron. The resultant alloy contains from 10 to 20 pct chromium, 6 to 12 pct nickel, and 55 to 65 pct iron, with lesser amounts of molybdenum and manganese. The alloy is essentially free of zinc, lead, and sulfur. The zinc-lead fume obtained from the treatment contains about 40 pct zinc and 20 pct lead and represents essentially complete recovery of these metals.

Laboratory-scale studies on defluorination of natural and synthetic fluorspars by pyrohydrolysis at 1,500° C. were made to determine the feasibility of developing a process for producing hydrogen fluoride from siliceous fluorspars. It was found that the reaction (at 1,500° C.) is not promising for process development, even though a silica-free offgas can be generated. The primary difficulty is the low hydrogen fluoride content of the offgases; an HF content of 6 percent was the best achieved. Previous research by the Bureau of Mines has demonstrated that offgases averaging 27 percent hydrogen fluoride can be produced under carefully controlled conditions at 1,280° C. The lower temperature process is a better method for production of HF. However, charges in which the CaF to Si02 mole ratio varied from 0.4 to 2 could be processed with similar results. Also, combined alumina and ferric oxide contents up to 25 mole-percent did not noticeably alter the rate of defluorination. Therefore, virtually any natural siliceous fluorspar would respond in essentially the same manner when exposed to water vapor at 1,500° C.

"One of the most serious long term health problems associated with underground,mining is Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis (CWI'), more commonly known as Black Lung Disease. It occurs in some coal workers, normally after 15 or more years of exposure to coal mine dust, and leads to a variety of respiratory problems. Two types of pneumoconiosis are recognized simple CWP, which has been estimated to affect 6.9 percent of miners and is a condition that does not impair the miner's ability to work nor reduce life expectancy; and a more severe form of black lung (called progressive massive fibrosis) that occurs in about one percent of the cases and results in severe lung damage.Although the relationship between coal dust and CWP has long been recognized, detailed knowledge of the relationship is insufficient for setting up authoritative guidelines to reduce the health risks for those employed in dusty,underground environments. CWP is not only a health problem for workers that causes considerable distress, it is also a very expensive problem the total annual costs associated with CWP approach two billion dollars.As part of its efforts to combat CWP, the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1983 established a Generic Mineral Technology Center to carry out basic research into all aspects of respirable coal dust:— control of dust generation — the behavior of dust in the mine — characterization of dust particles interaction of dust and lung— the relationships among dust generation and mobility and the mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics,Penn State, West Virginia University, the University of Minnesota, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are involved in this research, which is administered from the Department of Mineral Engineering at Penn State.Our work is one of the seven projects to be conducted at Penn Slate. We are concerned particularly with the characterization of dust and its relationships with the mine environment, and our main goal is to establish standard procedures for describing and measuring these variables.Coal DustCoal dust is a very complex material that varies greatly in chemical and mineralogical properties. Moreover, it is not the only constituent of respirable dust in the mine. When a coal seam is mined, it is inevitable that rock particles other than coal are included in the material. This rock comes from the mine roof, the floor, and the partings and inclusions within the coal scams. Since the roof and floor strata, the partings and inclusions are often stronger than the coal, mining them frequently causes more dust than mining the coal itself. One of the objectives of our research is to find the relationships between a specific coal's characteristics before it is mined and the respirable dust characteristics after it is mined. We are particularly interested in the size distribution of particles, the chemical properties, and the mineralogical properties."

Because State and Federal agencies have limited the amount of sulfur oxides that can be discharged to the atmosphere, most copper smelters plan to convert the S02 in offgases to sulfuric acid. In some cases, however, it might be preferable to use a nonsmelting method to fix the sulfur in the form of a discardable product. Research by the Federal Bureau of Mines has shown that sulfur in copper concentrate can be converted into insoluble anhydrite (CaS04) by roasting the concentrate with lime (CaO). After leaching the calcine to recover metal values, the residue may be discarded without harm to the environment. The process can use a rougher flotation product, thus reducing separation costs and saving valuable minerals (for example, molybdenite) that are now lost in making cleaner concentrate. In tests, rougher concentrate was pelletized with the theoretical amount of lime and roasted for 1 hour in a 6-1/2-inch-ID by 11-foot-long rotary kiln at 700° C. Sulfur retention was about 97 percent. Leaching the calcine with 20 percent RCI extracted approximately 99 percent of the copper, 73 percent of the iron, and 91 percent of the molybdenum. After the molybdenum was removed from the leach solution by adsorption on activated carbon, copper with a purity in excess of 99 percent was obtained by cementation on sponge iron. The strip solution then could be spray-roasted at 500° C to recover the RCI for recycle and obtain F2O3 as a byproduct.

During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following questions are frequently asked by coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any, of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when coal is stored? DISCUSSION (a) Loss of Heating Value Studies by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss of heating value of coal in storage commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh gas, and Sheridan (Wyo.) coals. The U.S. Bureau of Mines mine fIre diagnostic methodology to locate and monitor fIres in abandoned mines and waste banks is based on the controlled sampling of the mine atmosphere to determine changes in the concentration of hydrocarbons desorbed from heated coal. To provide background data for this methodology, a laboratory study was conducted in which samples of coal and coal waste were heated under controlled conditions. Gas samples from the combustion furnace were analyzed for standard gases CO2 and CO and for the C1 to Cs hydrocarbons. In all tests, the concentration of desorbed hydrocarbons increased during heating and decreased during cooling. A dimensionless hydrocarbon ratio, Rl, was developed as the signature for heated coal. For bituminous coals, the value of Rl increases during heating of coal samples and decreases during cooling of the same samples. Generally, Rl values of 100 or more indicate coal sample temperatures of at least 100° C. The emission of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons from anthracite samples was very low, resulting in relatively low Rl values at all temperatures. Data from fIeld projects confIrmed these results.

"During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report. 6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently. 7/The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.The preliminary work just mentioned had given indications of the separation of sulphate salts high in potassium from fusions of alunite with borax glass.During the course of further work along those lines, fusions of boric acid and alunite were tried. No separation of salts was obtained, but it was observed that rather complete removal of so3 from the alunite occurred and that the sinter could be leached with water to give a solution contain¬ing most of the potash and a residue containing most of the alumina. Wustite beds were reduced with carbon monoxide and mixtures of hydrogen and nitrogen in the temperature range 900° to 1,300° C to determine the effect of temperature, gas flow, and surface area on the rate of reduction to iron. The composition of the gas stream as it passed through the wustite bed was continuously measured with infrared absorption cells and heated-wire methods. The change in composition was used to calculate the reaction rates. Arrhenius plots of the data give heats of activation of 34 kcal for particles using CO, 27 kcal for particles using H2, 24 kcal for pellets using C8, and 6 kcal for pellets using H2. The velocity of reduction is dependent on the area of reacting interface and the driving potential of the gas (reducing gas concentration minus equilibrium concentration) as well as the exponential temperature effect. The reaction rate was independent of the gas velocity over the range of conditions studied.

[Owing to the comparatively high freezing point of nitroglycerin (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 23, 37, 38)3/ - 1.9° C. and 13.0° C. for the labile and stabile modifications, respectively, as determined by Hibbert (16) - manufacturers of dynamites have incorporated into the liquid portion of these composite explosives various substances capable of participating in an explosion, to depress the above-mentioned freezing point. Aromatic nitro-compounds, chiefly nitrobenzenes, nitrotoluenes, and nitronaphthalenes, have been used to a considerable extent (11), but such nitrosubstitution products have not proved altogether satisfactory, as has been shown clearly by Naoúm. (14). Consequently there has been a strong tendency in recent years to replace them with one or more of several nitric esters, among which the following (29, 35) have been prominent: Dinitrochlorhydrin (monochlorhydrin dinitrate); nitrosugars, for example, sucrose octanitrate (19); tetranitrodiglycerin (diglycerin tetranitrate); nitroglycol (ethyleneglycol dinitrate); and diethyleneglycol dinitrate (13, 46, 47). Of these, nitroglycol (33, 4l, 45, 48, 49, 65) is outstanding in importance. As the Bureau of fines is naturally interested in the analytical chemistry of the "explosive oils," it seemed desirable to bring together in this report the widely scattered experimental work covering the problem of differentiation that has appeared in various chemical and physicochemical publications.]

During 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines. This report presents the data obtained from investigation of the Sauk Mountain deposits in east-central Skagit County, Washington, The investigation consisted of transit and topographic surveys and sampling. The areas selected for sampling were first cleaned by blasting; channel samples up to 40 pounds Were cut where practical. Chip samples averaging 30 pounds were taken where channel samples could not be cut. A total of 21 samples in the Sauk Mountain area were taken and analyzed. The locations of the samples are shown in figures 2 and 4, and the analyses are listed in tables 1 and 2. This investigation is a part of a long-range program of general investigation of mineral resources for future industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The Sauk Mountain deposits were investigated for the purpose of disclosing new sources of high-purity limestone, which could be mined and shipped at low cost to Seattle and other industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest.

The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report.6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently.7/ The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.

This report presents the results of laboratory beneficiation tests on a sample of scheelite ore and a sample of low-grade scheelite flotation concentrate from the Sangdong mine, Korea. Sangdong was the foremost producer of tungsten concentrates on two occasions - during part of World War II and in 1953. It was also a significant producer of bismuth concentrates. Resources are very extensive and could support a 5,000-ton annual output of tungsten concentrates for many years. Located in the eastern part of South Korea near the 37° latitude, Sangdong has been a vital source of dollar income for the Republic of Korea in recent years. Its shutdown in March 1954 came about as a result of the great decline of tungsten prices and the fact that a sales contract with the United States Government had been terminated, In addition to establishing new markets, the problem of reopening Sangdong will be related to cost reductions and improving mill recoveries. Large quantities of offgrade scheelite concentrates were produced in the past and shipped to the United States for further beneficiation. Other low-grade concentrates and middlings have been stockpiled or discarded at the mine plant.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the conversion of nonmagnetic iron minerals to magnetic form through reduction Toasting operations. The primary objective was to obtain a concentrate that could be used as a direct shipping material for blast furnace consumption. Crude iron materials from the Steep Rock Lakes, Ontario, area were prepared into a blend of 8 parts siliceous ore, 3 parts pyritic ore, and 1 part tailings. Experimental work included laboratory reduction roasting tests, two continuous 10-day campaigns, and one 12-hour test all in a 34-inch by 36¬-foot rotary kiln. The objective of the project was achieved in producing an iron concentrate containing about 66 percent iron with over 90 percent iron recovery. Desirable operating conditions were developed in the kiln but optimum process variables were not completely established.

More than 50,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and probably about the same quantity of anthracite are cleaned annually in the United States by wet methods. The water, fine coal, and impurities from the water used for washing ordinarily are recovered by moans of various forms of settling tanks. Settling and clarification may be hastened markedly, thereby greatly increasing the capacity of clarification equipment already installed, by the addition of substances to the washery water that cause the fine particles in suspension to agglomerate and thus settle more rapidly. This phenomenon, although well known and applied in other fields, has been used at only a few coal washeries in the United States. It is widely employed, however, as an aid in the recovery or disposal of fine coal or impurities, as a means of preventing, stream pollution, and to enable reuse of washery water at many plants in Europe. Pioneering work in the United States has been done principally by two companies -- the Pittsburgh Coal Co., in Pennsylvania, 6/ and the Pacific Coast Coal Co., in Washington.

Two methods were tested for separating sulfur compounds in certain petroleum fractions into types . Such separation is preliminary to identifying the compounds . Each method involved extraction of sulfides from petroleum sulfur concentrates . In the first method , the sulfur concentrate was reacted with methyl - ptoluenesulfonate to form sulfonium compounds from which unreacted portions of the sample were removed by washing with solvent . The sulfides then were recovered by heating the sulfonium compounds with anhydrous triethanolamine . The second method consisted of passing anhydrous hydrogen iodide into a n-butane solution of the sample cooled in dry ice , whereupon the hydrogen iodide adducted with the sulfides to form sulfonium compounds . These adducts separated as crystalline solids or , more frequently , as glassy viscous liquids . The sulfide was regenerated by adding water to the filtered sulfonium compound and was recovered by steam distillation or by extraction with pentane . These methods have been evaluated , using individual pure sulfur compounds and blends of sulfur compounds . They also have been applied successfully to separating sulfides from sulfur concentrates derived from petroleum fractions .

This report is the fifth in a series presenting equilibrium vapor - liquid data for helium- bearing natural gases . It covers a 0.41 - mole - percent - helium natural gas that may be processed in the Department of the Interior's longrange helium conservation program . A Bureau of Mines phase equilibrium apparatus was used to obtain 139 samples of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases at 85 experimental conditions at temperatures from 0 ° to -299 ° F and at pressures from 100 to 500 psia . An appendix covers phase data at 100 , 200 , and 300 psia and at temperatures from -125 ° to -275 ° F for the dehydrated gas containing its original concentration ( 0.2 mole - percent ) of carbon dioxide , and the effect of a preliminary hydrocarbon trap upon subsequent vapor - liquid compositions .

This interpretation of the mining law of Australia was first compiled from the best information available in Washington; it was then sent to the American Consulate General , in Australia, where through the direction of Thomas H. Robinson , American consul in charge , it was submitted for criticism to the mining authorities in the various States of Australia , whose suggestions have been incorporated in this digest .
