The Microscope-Stand.—The microscope-stand proper, Fig. 1, consists of a microscope-tube, provided with both coarse and fine adjustments of the best construction, and with a draw-tube, rigidly mounted on a bar supported at both ends on substantial and firm cast-iron legs. AT THE inception of the cyanide process and its adaptation to the practice of gold and silver metallurgy much difficulty was experienced in applying it to auro-cupriferous ores, both in economy of treatment and recovery of the gold from solution. The presence of copper in the ore effected a high chemical consumption of cyanide during treatment, and in the solvent solution, it retarded the precipitation of the gold on zinc shavings. The coating of the copper on the zinc shavings presented even worse difficulties than the increased cyanide consumption as most ores contain a small amount of copper. This interference of copper led to the use of other precipitating methods and attempts to recover the cyanide which was consumed during ore treatment. Of the other methods used, electrolytic precipitation was the most practical until a better understanding of the application of zinc shavings and zinc dust developed. In September, 1905, a patent entitled, "Method for Recovering Precious Metals from Solution," was granted to Isaac Anderson and Michael Scanton. This method is adaptable to precious metal ores containing a small percentage of copper but has never been extensively used or perfected. The process has

The purpose of the following research, as originally planned, was to investigate the influence of temperature upon the plate¬amalgamation process. In order to consider the amalgamation process intelligently, it was first necessary to learn the nature of an amalgam. In the performance of this task it was found necessary to consult a large volume of literature and to perform experimental investigations. The conceptions of the nature of amalgams thus obtained have so important a bearing on the amalgamation-process as a whole, as well as upon the possible influences of temperature, that it was advisable to include them in the treatment of the subject. The broader title is therefore used, even though some features of the amalgamation process have been treated very briefly and others entirely omitted, there being nothing new to present regarding them and their development not required for a clear presentation of the matter in hand. I. HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION. Gold was one of the earliest metals known to man. Occurring in the metallic state, it could be picked up in nuggets or washed, as gold dust, front the sand and gravel of streams. Interesting descriptions of the processes employed in early times for the recovery of gold may be found in Pliny's Natural History and in the treatise by Agricola on ores and minerals. But little progress in the treatment of the ores of gold was possible until efficient -crushing machines were devised. Coal washing assumed an important role in the mining industry of the Pacific Northwest long before washing practice became firmly established in the Appalachian field. A Scaife washer was operated in the state of Washington in 1887; and by 1927, the fist year for which complete statistics were compiled, nearly a third of the state's coal production was washed, in comparison with only about 5 pct for the country as a whole. Mechanical preparation was adopted in Alaska in 1922 in a plant constructed by the United States Navy at Chickaloon to provide bunker coal for naval forces operating in northern waters. Many of the coal beds mined in Washington and Alaska contained more impurities than those mined elsewhere, and this circumstance contributed to the early interest in mechanical cleaning. A much more important factor, however, was the inclination of the coal beds. With steeply pitching beds, hand sorting by the miner at the face is impossible; consequently, all material must be loaded and dealt with on the surface, just as is now proving the case with mechanical mining of flat beds. Thus "full-seam" mining afforded the same stimulus to the early development of coal washing in the Northwest that - it is providing under mechanization in the rest of the country today.

INTRODUCTION For various reasons I have not specified the locality where the research indicated in the following pages was undertaken. It will suffice to say that it was on the grounds of a villa once remote from, but now completely surrounded by, its neighboring city, and in close proximity to an industrial establishment of great extent and importance manufacturing many kinds of steel articles and employing upwards of thirty chimney-stacks for power and process work. The problem was to discover the cause or causes of the mortality to trees and plants on the place, and to trace these causes to their origin. Before undertaking this experimental work, the bibliography accompanying this paper was compiled and studied. It appears from an examination of the careful scientific work performed by the ablest French, German, and English chemists during the last 25 years that they are unanimous in assigning the principal-in fact, the overwhelmingly predominant-cause of the destruction of vegetation to sulphur oxides, resulting either from direct- oxidation of sulphur in oil of vitriol works, etc., or from the oxidation of the sulphur from the minerals associated with commercial coal. Schröder and Schertel showed in 1884 that the sulphates deposited upon the leaves are not injurious to the plants; and Freytag proved that free sulphuric acid could not be found

HOWEVER good a furnace may be in regard to design, etc., or however excellent in the quality of the gas used, a suitable heat for the successful working of the metal cannot be obtained unless the melt be coated with a proper quantity of slag. This coating may be excessive or it may be deficient in quantity. The right degree of heat is the essential condition of successful working, for the quality of the steel made is never very good when the metal is allowed to simmer in the furnace for an excessive period, and this heat cannot be obtained if the metal is not protected by a proper covering of slag. This is not only to prevent the metal being over-oxidized and wasted, but also to prevent the metal being chilled when exposed with only a thin covering of slag. The slag may be obtained in either of two ways : 1, naturally, by the presence of sufficient silicon in the iron used, to unite with iron oxide to form a staple slag ; or, 2, by the addition of slag or free silica. In the first case the slag is formed naturally by the action of the oxygen in the flame - i.e., the oxidizing atmosphere of the furnace-on the silicon in the metal when melting. The charge then melts, as it is termed, "thick," and protects the banks from being cut. If too much silicon be present, however, and an excessive quantity of slag be formed, it will be found to be rather infusible, and unless care be taken to add the oxides quickly and follow the furnace up-thus rendering the slag more fusible by the extra iron oxide-the furnace bottom is liable to be pulled up. FREE competition, long the controlling ideal of domestic trade within the United States, has had the fundamental geographical advantage of functioning in the world's largest area of unrestricted commerce. Goods moved back and forth across state lines, unimpeded by customs, and industrial operations have developed rapidly to meet the expanding needs of a pioneer country richly endowed with natural resources. Fifty years ago, antitrust laws were adopted to protect the competitive private enterprise principle. It became illegal for one person to combine with another to restrain trade or commerce among the several states or with foreign nations. The original legislative measures defining this philosophy were the Sherman Act of 1890 and the Clay- ton Act passed in 1914. The development of Europe and other parts of the world was influenced by different conditions which led to a different theory of trade. Here were many small nations, with limited natural resources and a thin market, and they attempted to protect their national economy by tariff walls. International business arrangements for the purpose of diminishing the ups and downs of the more competitive system --crux of the modern cartel operations-seemed a logical device to stabilize production and guard the interests of both workers and consumers. European governments as well as European industrial interests became convinced that if com- petition could be held in bounds the danger of business depressions and un- employment could be reduced.

THE results published in Professor Howe's paper 10 of our determinations on the Ac3 and Ar3 points for a series of commercial carbon steels 11 containing manganese in varying proportion, represent the average temperatures found by taking several (4 or 5) heating and cooling curves. The accompanying curves, Figs. 6 and 7, are, for each steel, the first heating and cooling curves as obtained by' the inverse-rate method of Osmond, using a cylindrical chronograph sensitive to -0.1 sec. for recording .time. Simultaneous observations were also taken by the differential method with a platinum neutral and plotted by Rosenhain's derived differential method and gave substantially the same results, the curves having sensibly the same contours in both cases.12. The observations were taken in vacuo on cylinders 5/8 by 1 in. in length bored to center with a 1/8-in. hole to receive porcelain insulated thereto-couple, and inclosed in an out- and in-glazed Berlin porcelain tube heated electrically by, platinum foil wound on the tube. The vacuum was usually better than 0.1 mm. The heating and cooling of the furnace was automatically controlled by a salt-water rheostat with shaped electrodes, giving a uniform rate of heating and cooling.

AMONG the curious results of the recent advance of prices in the iron trade of the United States, one of them at least is to be regarded as of great importance. I allude to the utilization of mill cinder as a cheap and almost costless substitute for high-priced iron ores in many blast furnaces, situated within easy reach of such raw material. It has been, with but few exceptions, the practice in this country, based upon tradition rather than upon authority or European precedents, to waste this material on 'account of its high proportion of silicic and phosphoric acids, although known to contain more iron than most ores, and although also known to be sometimes applied to the blast furnace in greater or less quantities without serious detriment to the iron for specific purposes. While in use to a limited extent in the Hocking Valley and Hanging Rock iron regions of Ohio for several years, its use in Western Pennsylvania has only become general of late, under the exigencies of high prices and a short supply of ore. Especially has mill cinder largely entered into the stock of furnaces attached to rolling mills in and about Pittsburgh. Under such circumstances the cinder pig has been paddled on the premises, and the malleable iron produced has been unexpectedly good. Cautiously as at first mill cinder has been applied, it is evident that the temptation to use it freely is a strong one whenever the commercial rates for high-class ores are out of proportion to the general conditions of the iron trade, as sometimes happens in this country, especially as the free use of it is apparently justified by the quality of the iron produced from this cheap and abundant material. Indeed the consumption of cinder pig has., not been wholly confined to mills using up the production of furnaces belonging to the same plant. One furnace at least on the Ohio, at Covington, for several' months has been making foundry pig from "all cinder." The iron has gone into the general trade. STRETCHING from New York southwestwardly to Georgia is a great range of hills and mountains consisting of pre-Palaeozic schists, slates, and gneissic and granitoid rocks, known locally by many different names; in Pennsylvaniaa as the South mountains, the Berkshire or Durham and Reading hills, and in Virginia and farther south as the Blue ridge. To the northwest of this range lies the " Great Valley," underlain by Lower Silurian limestones, and known as the Lehigh valley, Cumberland valley, Shenandoah valley, valley of Eastern Tennessee and Georgia and by other local names, but all these are parts of one valley, geologically and geographically continuous from New Jersey to Georgia. Lying upon and along the northern flank of this range of mountains, and dipping northwestwardly under the limestone of the valley, is the Potsdam formation (Primal or No. 1 of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey), which consists of sandstone or conglomerate overlain by slates. The latter are sometimes arenaceous and occasionally are replaced in part by sandstone. This formation varies from a few feet to several hundred feet in thickness. At the outcrop the slates are completely decomposed, oxidized or disintegrated, forming a belt of clay several hundred feet wide occupying the interval between the outcroppings of the sandstone and limestone. This clay-belt includes a more or less continuous series of iron-ore (brown hematite) deposits, which have been, and still are, extensively worked. The belt is more or less continuously mineralized with iron throughout its length, and hundreds of large deposits of ore have been developed and worked, producing many millions of tons of ore.

PART I. § 1. Introduction. After giving certain definitions, this paper gives the reasons which led to Roozeboom's form of the diagram of the freezing-point curves and general equilibrium of the iron-carbon compounds, steel and cast-iron ; and then those which led to replacing it with the present or double diagram, in which graphite is at all temperatures held to be the more stable and cementite the less stable (metastable) form of carbon. Next in § 10 the evidence supporting this greater stability of graphite is examined, then in § 17 that which seems to oppose it, and in § 22 a summary of the evidence is presented. The second part of the paper considers the topography of the graphite-iron diagram, rejecting summarily the solubility-lines based on the data of Charpy and Grenet and of Mannes-mann, on the ground that the data even on their face do not really point toward these lines, and that they are wholly incompetent to determine any solubility-lines whatsoever, because they report together with the dissolved carbon also an indeterminate quantity of cement-carbon, and because even such carbon as is actually dissolved, only in part represents the solubility of graphite, and in another and indeterminate part represents the solubility of cementite, or at least of carbon in presence of cementite as distinguished from graphite. It might be thought that graphite is but slightly soluble in iron, because of the absence of any suggestions of eutectoid graphite, corresponding to the eutectoid cementite of pearlite in very many cases in which the cast-iron seems to consist of ferrite and massive graphite only, and because of the micrographs of Goerens and Gutowsky. MAJOR battles in the present war have been fought in American research laboratories. Without the outstanding contributions made by our scientists, engineers, and technologists in mining and metallurgy, many of our achievements in the present war would have been impossible. All recognize the fact that modern research has found the answer to problems which seemed insuperable. For the duration, many of these inventions must be maintained as war secrets. But aside from these, the record of accomplishment in peace and war, especially in the past few decades, known to all, demonstrates what scientific and industrial research can accomplish. It may be regarded as axiomatic that the development of modern industry is based principally upon research devoted to making inventions and discoveries. We have come a long way from the sixteenth century, when Agricola published his classical "De Re Metallica:" With our vastly increased knowledge we are now commercially producing dozens of metals entirely unknown at that time. Further, with our modern methods of research and development, a large number of invaluable alloy compositions have been produced. These include numerous age-hardenable alloys, cupronickels, "Everbrite", "Everdur", "Duralumin", "Elinvar", "Hastelloy", "Inconel", "Invar", "Monel", "Ni-chrome", "Ni-Hard", "Ni-Resist", "Permaloy", "Silcrome", stainless steels and irons and other alloy steels, "Stellite", and zinc die-casting alloys.

I. INTRODUCTION. THIS old and once famous district played, through its enormous production of silver and gold, an important part in the history of the State of San Luis Potosi. According to a pamphlet prepared under the direction of the Governor of the State, Sr. Don Blas Escontria, and presented to the visiting members of the Institute during the Mexican meeting of 1901, this district is situated 20 km. east of the city of San Luis Potosi, in a range of mountains of moderate height, extending 135 km. N. and S., and 16 km. E. and W.; and the mineralized area hitherto developed is about 600,000 sq. m. The history of the district,. as given by the record dated 1778, and formerly kept in the San Francisco convent, says that it was discovered in 1575 by Sr. Don Pedro Irarte, and adds that the city of San Luis Rey de Francisco del Potosi received its name (in allusion to the famous Potosi mines in Bolivia) by reason of the remarkable productiveness of its gold- and silver-mines in the first period of their exploration, during which they paid to the Crown, as " quintos " (the fifth part of the product), $97,000,000, as appears from the accounts of the royal treasury. The amount of the quientos paid during the " bonanza period " of 80 years was $72,000,000. The larger sum first mentioned probably represents a longer series of years. But either will suffice to indicate the great wealth of the mines. INTRODUCTION The neutron-garnma log has been used for stratigraphic correlation by the oil industry for a number of years. In the past few years, the quantitative application of the log to provide information with respect to porosity has received considerable attention. The basic concept of quantitative interpretation has been pointed out in the literature.1 It shall be the purpose of this paper to develop by empirical means a method whereby the relationship of porosity to neu. tron-gamma deflection may be predicted for various bore hole diameters. This relationship is applicable to the present commercially available neutron-gamma log run in open hole. Data available at present are insufficient to establish similar correlations for cased holes. Through the development of such a correlation, the importance of the various factors which influence the log become evident. NEUTRON-GAMMA CURVE The logging tool conisists of a source of neutrons and a means of detecting and measuring gamma rays, the detector being shielded from the direct emission from the source. The gamma rays reaching the detector have three sources of origin: (1) the natural gamma radiation emitted by the formations, (211 induced gamma radiation resulting from neutron bombardment. (3) gamma rays emitted by the source and scattered by the formation. It has been found that a neutron derived porosity correlation is best for shale-free formations. Under this condition the natural gamma ray radiation is quite low, and therefore, will be neglected in this work. The induced gamma ray radiation resulting from neutron bombardment is predominantly a function of the hydrogen atom concentration of the substance penetrated. Due to the geometry of the presently used system, the neutron-gamma curve indicates low radioactivity opposite high hydrogen concentration and high radioactivity opposite low hydrogen concentration (Figs. 1 and 2). Having a curve which measures hydrogen atom concentration, it follows that if the matrix of the formation penetrated consists only of atoms other than hydrogen, and if the fluid filling the pores is either oil or water, the curve should be an indication of porosity (both oil and water have practically the same number of hydrogen atoms per unit volume'). The above criteria for a porosity (Correlation are fulfilled in clean sandztones and limestones in which the pore volume is completely filled with liquids (oil or water), but not in formations containing either free gas or shale or both. Free gas. even under pressure, contains considerably less hydrogen per unit volume than oil and water; therefore, a variation in response on the curve would be expected. Camp- bell and Winter,' indicate that this difference in hydrogen concentration is sufficient to distinguish between sands containing water or oil and those containing dry gas. Shale is a mineral that contains hydrogen in its molecular structure in addition to the hydrogen which is present in the water of hydration. Thus, in formations containing variable amounts of shale, the hydrogen concentration indicated by the curve is not a direct indication of porosity. Bush and Mardock' have indicated that a correction may be made by use of the gamma ray curve to provide a porosity correlation. Since the induced gamma rays are predominaiitly a function of hydrogen concentration, it would be anticipated that the fluid filled bore hole would materially influence the logs. It has been pointed out that the neutron-gamma curve response decreases with increase in hydrogen concentration, therefore, the response due to the induced gamma ray component decreases with increase in fluid filled hore hole diameter. A convolution procedure is described for obtaining an analytical expression for the composition profiles of solute concentration:; in binary solid solutions. The free energy of solutions containing such compositional inhomogeneities can then be evaluated and the stability of spherically symmetric clusters (G.P. zones, for short) us a function of their radii and central compositions can be studied accordingly. Two characteristic zone radii are defined: the minimum radius (RM) corresponding to the smallest zone for which growth is energetically favored over dissolution, and the critical radius RK) corresponding to zones associated with the minimum work of formation. The values of RM and RK coincide at the two classical limits of nucleation and growth and spinodal decomposition. As the spinodal is approached, however, RM and RK diverge increasingly and it is proposed that the initial] decomposition morphology is governed more closely by the minimum, rather than by the critical radius since the former possesses no singularity within the m eta stable phase boundary. Reversion is briefly discussed in the light of the foregoing and it is shown that a set of reversion temperatures located between the coherent miscibility gap and the coherent spinodal must correspond to a given distribution of low temperature zones. SINCE the early works of Guinier1 and preston,2 the kinetics and morphology of GP zones have been studied extensively, see Ref. 3, for example, for a recent review. Nevertheless, a completely satisfying theoretical treatment of the decomposition of meta-stable or unstable binary solid solutions is still lacking due to the almost unsurmountable mathematical difficulties that one encounters in attempting to solve the pertinent diffusion equation which, in principle, describes the whole process. This equation, first derived by Cahn for the initial stages of spinodal decomposition,4 is a nonlinear partial differential equation of the fourth order in anisotropic space, a general analytical solution of which is completely out of the question. From this equation, some prediction can be made, however, concerning the later stages of spinodal decomposition5 and a recent numerical solution6 of the equation in the case of one- and two-dimensional composition modulations of a solid solution inside the spinodal has led to the following considerations: the sinusoidal morphology7 is to be expected only for solutions of average composition c, located near the center of the coherent miscibility gap.8 For solutions with co closer to the spinodal decomposition, depleted shell zones9 should constitute the first recognizable decomposition product, later evolving to iso- lated, enriched preprecipitates in a uniformly depleted matrix as this must, in all cases, constitute the final metastable morphology, barring, of course, loss of coherency and change in crystal structure. In agreement with the qualitative description of Bonfiglioli and Guinier,l0 it thus appears that the various models discussed by previous authors are, in fact, idealized successive stages of the general decomposition process. Unfortunately, corresponding calculations for a solid solution outside the spinodal are not yet available because of two additional difficulties: it is essential that the diffusion equation be solved in three-dimensional space, and furthermore, one must include in the equation an appropriate "source term" describing the statistics of the creation of composition fluctuations required to trigger the nucleation events. At present, a general treatment of this problem does not appear to be tractable. Nevertheless, by using a modelistic approach, i.e., by selecting a priori certain composition variation profiles and by evaluating their associated free energies, one can draw certain conclusions relative to the stability of these isolated composition modulations or "zones", both outside and inside the spinodal. This is the object of the present investigation. THEORY We shall now describe a standard four-parameter spherically symmetric GP zone, evaluate its free energy according to the Cahn and Hilliard11 formula (Eq. [5], below), and plot the corresponding energy surfaces as a function of zone amplitude and radius as

A model of metallic solutions is postulated which explains the energy of formation of alloys on the basis of changes in electron density around solute and solvent atoms and changes in pairwise interactions between atoms. The model is based on the Wigner-Seitz cell model of metals, with the electronegativities of the metals as the parameter for the electron-attracting power of the constituent atoms. In contrast to models based on the description of cohesive energy in terms of pairwise interactions only, which require an empirical, adjustable correction parameter to the Berthe-lot relations in order to predict negative energies of formation, the electron cell model accounts for both negative and positive energies on the basis of parameters of the pure components. Calculated heats of mixing based on published parameters of the pure metals are found to compare favorably to experimental values, despite the absence of any adjustable parameters in the model. THE formulation of an "exact" quantum mechanical model for the energy of cohesion of metals reduces ultimately to the many-body problem and for a complete solution would require the knowledge of wave functions and energy levels of all the particles in the system. The case of alloys is further complicated by the fact that the potential fields around the constituent atoms are different and the matching of boundary conditions in terms of the resulting wave functions is still an unresolved mathematical problem. It appears that in spite of the numerous investigations that have led to an elucidation of many properties of the metallic state, the formulation of the Hume-Rothery rules in 1931 marks the lone accomplishment toward simple, qualitative prediction of the energy of formation of alloys. More recently Friedel'' and Arafa have utilized the modern concepts of the electronic structure in metals in combination with the Hume-Rothery rules to arrive at quantitative estimates of the energy of formation of alloys with low solute contents. The relative success of the Hume-Rothery rules and Friedel's and Arafa's studies encouraged broaching the subject of formulation of a model based on realistic physical parameters and of conceptual and mathematical simplicity that could be applied to alloys regardless of concentration. On the basis of the free-electron theory, the cohesive energy of pure metals can be expressed as a function of "valence" (number of free electrons per atom), lattice parameter (or density), and the ioniza-tion energy. In addition to the electronic contributions to cohesion, one has to consider the pairwise exchange interaction energy between neighboring ion cores and the contribution from van der Waals forces. The energy changes upon alloying are viewed as resulting primarily from a redistribution of electron densities around the ions (a simplification of the more basic concept of a change of the wave functions of the electrons in the presence of a perturbing potential field). In addition there is a change in the pairwise interactions between neighboring ions which is usually the only factor taken into account in commonly used adaptations of the quasichemical theory. The electronegativities of the metals forming the alloy are used as the measure of the electron-attracting power of the ions in the alloy and the difference in electronegativities as the driving force for changes in electron energy on alloying. The interplay of pairwise interactions and electronic forces results in positive or negative energies of formation of alloys. Changes in the ultrasonic attenuation in steel specimens have been observed during tensile tests. Samples of AISI 1020, 1045, and 1095 steel quenched and tempered to a spheroidized condition have been used. Both attenuation and microstrain measurements fail to reveal preyield dislocation motion in the as-tempered specimens. Upon reapplication of the load to samples in the strain-aged condition there is a large preyield attenuation increase but no observable micvostrain up to 90 pct of the flow stress. These and other observed changes can be related to changes in the free disloca-tion density and the average dislocation segment length. The results show that the increase inflow stress in the strain-aged condition is caused by increased fric-tional stresses rather than by dislocation pinning. Strain aging is found to proceed through three distinct stages. The second of these follows the t2,3 law and is characterized by an activation energy of 20 kcal per mole. RECENT years have seen substantial progress in the understanding of the sharp yield-point phenomenon in metals; the influence of solute atom pinning of dislocations, of dislocation multiplication, and of the stress dependence of dislocation velocity on the stress-strain curve has been investigated. Evaluation of the relative importance of these factors in the various metals and alloys is not complete, however, because observation of the stress-strain curve alone is not sufficient to determine the yield mechanism. In the experimental study of the sharp yield point it would be desirable to be able to directly observe the dislocations in a bulk specimen. Ideally, the observations should be made during deformation because of the rapidity of recovery processes in lightly strained metals. While direct observation of dislocations under these conditions is not possible, certain physical properties sensitive to the dislocation structure can be observed while a test specimen is undergoing deformation. Of these properties, one of the most useful is the ultrasonic attenuation. The total observed attenuation, a, is due to a number of causes: acoustic diffraction, scattering by inhomogeneities in the structure, heat flow, magnetostriction, and dislocation damping. Satisfactory measurements of the absolute a are difficult to make because all of these factors cannot be evaluated in any given specimen, but changes in a due to changes in the dislocation contribution alone can be reliably observed by appropriate technique. Because dislocation damping is sensitive to small concentrations of long, free dislocation segments, observation of acoustic attenuation due to dislocations is particularly useful in the study of the early stages of plastic deformation. In the experiments to be described, acoustic-attenuation measurements have been made on steel samples as these were pulled through their yield in tension. While many details of dislocation-damping phenomena in the bee metals remain obscure, the main characteristics of this type of internal friction are established. At low strain amplitudes and at frequencies well below that of dislocation resonance (the conditions of these experiments) the dislocation contribution to a is given by1 where A is the density of freely oscillating dislocation segments, L is the average segment length, B is the damping constant for a moving dislocation, w is the frequency, O is an orientation factor, C is the dislocation line tension, and t is a numerical factor relating average segment length to the distribution of lengths. Because of its fourth-power dependence on L, a is highly sensitive to changes in dislocation free segment length such as might arise from unpinning, recovery, jog formation, or dislocation intersection. The above equation is not valid near the resonant frequency of dislocations, but the segment length in steel is believed to be much too short to cause over-damped resonance near 10 Mc; this will be discussed later. In the present experiments plastic-strain measurements with a sensitivity of 2 x 10-5 were also made during the early stages of loading in order to detect preyield strain. The properties and characteristics of lead and zinc have made these metals useful to man in many ways since the days of antiquity. Despite their long history of use, however, these metals have proved to be extremely resilient and responsive to modern needs. New alloys and compounds continue to be developed, adding to the growth of these metals. Consumption data is given for 1969 and compared with one and two decades ago. Trends in major markets also are cited and explained. Uses for lead and zinc which have come into prominence within the past few years are described and explained, with emphasis on the role played by the industry's cooperative research program. Current efforts in the research phase are discussed, with details given on major efforts for both metals, including new alloys, process developments, applications research, finishes, coating, paints and pigments, batteries and fundamental research. A forecast is given of promising new areas and a projection made on a longer term of new applications that may emerge from current research.
