Twice in the past two years and in two widely separated localities-one near Williamsville, Mo., and the other in the Allard Lake district of Quebec- the Contract Drilling Division of the Longyear Company has experienced perplexing difficulties in drilling granitoid igneous rocks. The rocks in both places are characterized by appreciable amounts of feldspar intimately intergrown with quartz particles of microscopic dimensions. The disappointingly slow rate of advance and the exceptionally high bortz loss, obtaining during the life of these two projects, are ascribed largely to the resistance to abrasion of these two minerals when arranged in this intergrown pattern. Whether all intergrowth-bearing igneous rocks would offer extraordinary resistance to bit progress cannot be stated with assurance on the strength of these experiences alone. More data on diamond drilling this sort of material in a number of localities are needed before any generalizations can be made safely.

Three companies, United States Potash Company, Potash Company of America, and International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, are now operating potash mines and refineries in the Carlsbad, New Mexico, area. The three mines are located approximately twenty miles east of Carlsbad. The deposits have been found ideal for mechanized mining methods. This summary has been compiled from information made available by the three operating companies.

(communication to the Secretary*):—Iu following the discussion of the specifications for cast-iron and finished castings, I mas strongly impressed with two points which might be ventilated to advantage more fully from the view of the practical foundry-man. First, the reasons why only silicon and sulphur were specified and not phosphorus, manganese and carbon; and second, why but little was said concerning the presence of iron oxide in the material.

The following experiments and researches were originally conducted by Dr. Heinrich Rcessler, chief of the German Gold and Silver Parting Establishment at Frankfort-on-the-Main, for the sole purpose of abating the nuisance created by the discharge into the air of the sulphurous and sulphuric acids generated in the process of parting bullion by sulphuric acid. The results achieved have, however, an important bearing not only on this process, but are of value in the manufacture of sulphuric acid and sulphate of copper from sulphurous gases derived from any source. It has now been in successful operation for a term of years at Dr. Roessler's own works, and has been lately introduced with satisfactory results at the royal mints of Kremnitz and Munich, and the well-known establishment of Johnson Mathey & Co., of London.

The plight of the Japanese mining business is pitiful. Coal mines were given the highest priority for all materials they needed, yet between the end of the war and June 1948, the government was obliged to subsidize them to the extent of 22 billion yen, this being the difference between the consumer's price and the producer's price. Most of the metal mining companies have been operating at only one fifth to one third of war-time production rates, and financial losses have been terrific. The chief difficulties have been a plethora of office workers and a dearth of equipment, supplies, and miners. The principal material needs at metal mines are steel rails. cars, plates, nails, rubber hoses, and belting, to say nothing of modern core drills which are totally lacking. Until recently the great shortage was in coal; for lack of fuel the smelters and factories failed to produce the very metals and equipment now needed to operate the mines. Nation-wide shortages have created a monstrous inflation of prices throughout all the economy, currently amounting to 200 times the prewar figures. The steel industry's increased demand for higher grade pellets has caused the pellet producers to investigate methods of upgrading their product and the Hanna Mining Co.'s Groveland plant on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is no exception. The low grade iron deposit is a complex mixture of magnetite and hematite with chert, quartz, jasper and various iron silicates.1 Beneficiation is by Humphrey spirals and anionic flotation of the iron minerals.2 Flotation of the spiral tailings makes up about 75% of the concentrate, while a minor amount of concentrate (less than 3%) is produced in magnetic circuits. The concentrate is pelletized at the rate of 1.6 million tpy. The initial concentrating facilities were constructed in 1958 and the concentrate was marketed as sinter feed until a pelletizing plant was added early in 1963. Grade improvement soon became a high priority research project, and several methods of concentration were investigated.

The internal friction (1/Q) of cobalt Fig. 1 (measured by an electrostatic dynamic method1) near 250°C begins to increase rapidly on heating and continues to increase until 560°C, the highest tem- perature measured. In the plot of log of 1/Q against 1/T, above 250°C the data nearly fit two straight lines intersecting at 400°C, approximately the temperature of the hexagonal-cubic transformation. The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, although providing no precise definitions of safe and healthful working conditions, specifies mandatory duties, and methods and procedures -- "to assure so far as possible every working man and woman in the nation safe and healthful working conditions." The dynamics of the workplace ad the dynamics of this coextensive Act both spring from the same source. Both require at any given time an application of the then con- temporaneous highest state of the art. Both are flexible, ongoing, adaptive, changing; both advance by a blending of experience and research.

RECENT years have seen important practical advances in the construction of recording instruments for use with thermocouples. The difficulties of the problem will be appreciated when it is remembered that a 10° F. change in temperature of a base-metal couple at 1500° means a change in the electromotive force of about 0.00035 volt. In a circuit having a resistance of 350 ohms, this means a change in the current of 0.00000,1 amp.; and despite this requirement of great sensitivity the instruments must be sufficiently robust to withstand the rough usage which is so often their lot. Two methods are in common use for the measurement of the electromotive force produced by a thermocouple: 1. The milliammeter method, in which the current produced by the thermocouple in a circuit of known resistance is measured and from. this the electromotive force is deduced by Ohm's law. 2. The potentiometer method in which a known potential difference is opposed to the thermocouple electromotive force. The use of thermocouple and milliammeter for measuring temperature introduces some possible sources of error, for the reading depends on a number of factors, including the following: (1) Electromotive force set up at the hot junction, (2) electromotive force set up at the cold junction, (3) resistance of the circuit including thermocouple, lead wires, and meter, (4) field strength of magnets, (5) strength of controlling springs in meter, (6) friction at pivots, of pointer on paper, etc. It is obviously necessary to so design and maintain the installation that the reading is independent of all the factors except the first. The electromotive force set up at the cold junction can easily be taken care of provided it is constant. This has been approximately accomplished by burying the cold junction in the ground or actually secured by locating it in a container, the temperature of which is kept constant by means of a thermostat.

THE copper industry operated at high capacity throughout 1947, with no serious tie-ups in operation as was the case in 1946, when almost the entire industry was shut down by a four-month strike. Refined copper production in the United States averaged 94,250 tons for the first eleven months and deliveries to domestic consumers, including foreign copper for domestic consumption, averaged 114,000 tons per month. On April 29 the import duty of 4d per lb was suspended until March 31, 1949. Copper prices fluctuated considerably for a short time thereafter. Over the year the price of domestic electrolytic copper at refineries on the Atlantic seaboard advanced from 19.225¢ on Jan. 2 to 21.200d on Dec. 24.

A STURDY and consistent expansion of the metal industry occurred in 1947 exemplified by an increase of approximately 30 per cent in steel consumption over 1946. For this major reason, ferroalloy metals have seen their most useful and important peace-time year. The current domestic rate of consumption of high-grade ferroalloy ores, together with added consumption of new foreign producers as well as for eign nationals' restrictions on high-grade exports, makes very evident the increasing difficulties of obtaining sufficient high-grade ores. This accentuates the need for new and less expensive methods of production of ferro-alloy metals of higher purity from lower-grade domestic resources. As an important factor in preparedness, procurement of these high-grade, -critical ferroalloy minerals and metals for our nation's stock piles is a most important task. Also, this stock-piling can be the means of supplying incentive for the industrial development of the new metallurgical processes and plants necessary for the recovery of ferroalloy metals from our domestic low-grade deposits.

INDUSTRY has the right to expect the petroleum engineering schools to supply more than the minimum technical qualifications necessary to obtain or discharge the responsibilities of a particular job. The basic training, social and economic orientation, should go far beyond these minimum requirements. Petroleum engineering students should also be well grounded in the history of the oil business so that they may understand the industry's progress since the advent of the Drake well. Furthermore, according to P. H. Bohart, the schools "have a definite duty to help the students form a workable philosophy of life, which includes an appreciation of the service of science to mankind, and a belief in the obligation of the individual who enters a profession to exalt himself by continuing his studies and growth so that he may never cease making contributions to the advancement of science and industry."

THE phenomena of concentric arrangement of minerals in rock-masses, generally known as "orbicular structure," have of late received much attention from investigators. Lawson, of the University of California, has described the orbicular gabbro at Dehesa, San Diego county, Cal. Kessler and Hamilton, of Stanford University, working independently upon the same subject, published their descriptions,2 giving also a list of many other localities in Europe and America where orbicular rocks are found, adding copious references to the literature of the subject. The orbicular diorite of the type locality in Corsica., familiar to mineralogists and petrologists under the name "Napoleonite," was described by Vogelslang in 1862.3 Chrustschoff, of St. Petersburg, has also given much atten¬tion to the subject, and is the author of a classification of the various known forms of orbicular structure.4 No complete and satisfactory explanation of the origin of or¬bicular aggregations in rocks has yet been offered. The patent fact is generally recognized that the constituent minerals have crystallized from a more or less molten or plastic magma, but why these minerals should be arranged in concentric spheres or crusts has not been clearly shown. PROSPERITY of the gold miner has continued with attendant construction of numerous plants, many of them small but some of good size. Many new mills have been erected in Canada and in the Philippines, end one should mention the new mill at Cripple Creek, Colo., a custom plant allowing a choice of flotation, cyaniding, or roasting and cyaniding. Flotation is a feature of many of the new plants and some existing mills have been remodeled to use flotation in place of amalgamation and cyaniding. The Utah Copper Co. has re- opened its Arthur mill and operations are being resumed in the big Ray, Chino, and Inspiration copper mills. Examples of new construction are the Mountain City 300-ton copper flotation mill in northern Elko County, Nevada; the Star zinc mill and one or two other mills in the Coeur d'Alene district of Idaho; and the 500-ton mill for the Buena Vista mine at Stewart, B. C. The last-named is to be installed underground, following the example of the zinc mill at Gilman, Colo., and he small Doyle jigging plant in the Wisconsin zinc fields.

ABOUT three years ago a distinctive new type of crushing and grinding equipment, known as the Hadsel mill, was announced. A description appeared in the November, 1932, issue of this magazine. Any machine that would take run-of-mine ore and reduce it, in one operation, and at a reasonable cost, to a size suitable for metallurgical treatment was bound to attract much interest, as the original Hadsel mill did. The first commercial sizes were built with the drum supported by an overhung shaft and partly immersed in a tank. The drum carried inside and outside buckets to lift the ore, which was dropped as the drum revolved onto stationary breaker plates projecting into the drum from the opposite tank wall. The coarser material settled back into the inside buckets. Intermediate sizes were carried into the tank, and this material was scooped out by the outside buckets and deposited hack in the drum for further grinding. The fines were carried out of the mill with the wash water over an adjustable weir at one side of the tank.

RECENTLY it has become the custom of retiring presidents to talk of the relations of the Institute to its membership and its constituency- and it seems a good precedent to follow. Past-president Smith reviewed our relations to materials and to society in general. Mr. Bradley spoke of the value and use of our publications and of our educational duties. My message will be in regard to the coordination of our various groups of member interests and of service to industry. This Institute has, within its organization, four divisions and fourteen technical committees--each interested in a separate put very definite subject, and each covering a phase of mining engineering interest. These vary from geology and the geophysical methods of prospecting, to the physics of the structure of metals, truly "from the mine to the consumer"-from the preparation for mining to the final use of that which has been mined.

DURING 1939, 286 by-product coke ovens were completed and put into operation. These included 140 Witputte ovens for the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp., at Gary, Ind.; 61 Koppers-Becker ovens for the Ford Motor Co., at River Rouge, Mich.; 65 Semet-Sotvay ovens for the Great Lakes Steel Corp., Zug Island, River Rouge, Mich.; and 20 Curran-Knowtes ovens for the Midwest-Radiant Corp. plant at Mitlstadt, Ill. The Millstadt plant is unique in carbonizing a washed coat containing 3.50 per cent sulphur. The gas contains approximately 2500 grains sulphur per 100 cu. ft.; this is successfully removed with sodium carbonate solution by the Seaboard liquid purification process. The coke is intended primarily for use as a smokeless domestic fuel in the city of St. Louis.

ALL sessions of the Mining Geology Committee at the Annual Meeting this year were held jointly with other groups, a plan that seemed to work out to the satisfaction of every one. Certain of these sessions are reported in this issue by others; the ones held on Wednesday are covered here. Ten papers, as published in the February M&M, were on the program for the Wednesday morning session, held jointly with the Society of Economic Geologists. Mr. Eckel made a brief presentation of his paper, on which there was no discussion, and Mr. Peoples presented that of which he was a joint author. D. M. Fraser then discussed a gravimeter survey for chromite in Cuba, which blocked out some 50,000 tons of ore, and F. G. Wells told of work on chromiferous sands in Oregon.

ONLY through the mineral fuels can large amounts of energy be transported to great dlstances and stored for long periods for future use. Coal has the advantages over oil of greater safety of handling and smaller losses in storage. But oil is, in the present stage of technical advancement, the more economical source of liquid fuel for internal-combustion motors. No method for direct use of coal in such motors has been developed that can compete with petroleum products. The automoblle engine and the airplane motor are designed to make the most effective use of gasoline.
