A stronger U.S. economy stimulated the domestic mineral sector in 1994. Metals demand was spurred by robust U.S. motor vehicle sales, while demand for major industrial minerals rose in response to highway and building construction. Domestic mineral and material demand is expected to increase in 1995, particularly if interest rates do not restrain the building industry and international monetary exchange rates remain advantageous to U.S. automobile manufacturers. Additional information on events, trends, and issues in the mineral and material sector is presented below and in the commodity sections that follow. Overall Performance Processed materials of mineral origin produced in the United States during 1994 increased to an estimated value of $360 billion. Domestic output of raw nonfuel minerals in 1994 was estimated at $34 billion, about 6% more than that of 1993. The value of U.S. minerals production has increased in 29 of the last 34 years.

The mineral Industry, following the economy as a whole, experienced little growth in 1992. However, with modernized plants, efficient workforces, and lower operating costs, the industry is well positioned to take advantage of possible improvement in the national economy during 1993. In addition to the significant 1992 events highlighted below, important events, trends, and issues within individual mineral industries are addressed in the commodity sections that follow. The value of processed materials of mineral origin is estimated to have been about $310 billion in 1992. The value of U.S. raw nonfuel minerals production in 1992 is estimated at approximately $32 billion, a 3% increase over 1991. The value of domestic minerals production has increased in all but 4 of the last 32 years.

The paper deals with a process that allows the recycling in a cupola of EAF dusts with 18 % Zn. It produces dusts with zinc grade higher than 50 - 55 % and commercial cast iron with less than 200 ppm Zn, 50 ppm Pb, 0.15 % S. The paper focuses mainly on lab tests made with the aim to develop an effective formulation of self reducing - melting pellets. With such a formulation, agglomerates develop a breaking load higher than 125 - 150 kg without any thermal treatment. Zinc and lead are volatilized in the cupola with yields higher than 95 % at 1200 OC, before any melting. Sulphur is transfemed into gas and slag. All these conditions allow to lower zinc, lead and sulphur grades below the cast iron specifications. Results of first bench scale tests performed at Fonderie Piret to validate the process will be presented.

Condensates produced by SiO(g) and CO(g) have a crucial importance in silicon production. Condensation will follow the reactions 3 SiOðgÞ+COðgÞ→ 2 SiO2 + SiC and 2 SiO ðgÞ→Si+SiO2. Solid compounds generated during silicon production contain Si, SiO2 and SiC in different microstructures and amounts. In industrial systems, condensates limit the SiO(g) escape to the off-gas system. On the other hand, they can block the gas flowing from the high temperature zone, hence the necessity of studying an optimized condensation process. This review discusses SiO(g) condensation and its interaction with CO(g). The report gives an overview of the condensates found both at laboratory and at industrial scale. The two main compounds are the Si–SiO2 and the SiOx–SiC mixtures. The hypothesis on the mechanism of formation of SiC–SiOx condensates is presented through a wide selection of performed works. The advantages and disadvantages of the former experimental procedures are discussed.

Sev_eral dozen si lica occurrences have been reported from various parts of Brit ish Columbia. Some represent hydrothermal veins or parts of pegmatite bodies; other are recrystall ized sandstones. Several vein type deposits were mined for smelter flux and as a source of white chips for stucco dash and simi lar products. Some quartzites were studied as potential sources of high-grade silica for ferrosilicon and silicon metal production. The province's only production of silica for ferrosilicon has come from a pegmatitic quartz plug near Oliver in southern British Columbia. Its reserves are now practically depleted.

The paper describes the new design criteria and control strategies for multi-density dense medium separation (DMS) circuits. The role of the multi-density separation is discussed, and it is emphasized that for many processing problems -related to minerals and coals -it may be very important to perform two or more cuts at different densities in order to obtain a remarkable improvement in quality of products, process efficiency and economy. The two-density separation by dense medium cyclones was generally performed using two dense medium plants in sequence. In contrast to the former technology, the multi-density separation can now be performed by using a single medium circuit composed of different interconnected medium sumps. The sumps, one for each density, are fed with different medium streams selected according to their density, size composition and content in non-magnetic contaminant in such a way that the rheological properties of the media are optimized. This new technology is based on dynamic systems to density the medium, on the size-density segregation of the medium in the cyclones and separating devices and on accurate control systems for the density, viscosity and stability of the dense media of the different sumps. The present paper reports on the theoretical basis for the new, advanced medium circuits and on the systems for the control of the densities and of the rheological properties of the dense media. A typical circuit for a two-density separation is also described, and some industrial applications reported and discussed.

The paper compares operational parameters for the electric reduction smelting of pig iron and ferroalloys in pilot and industrial furnaces. Data from two pilot furnaces of approximately 200 and 500 kW operating-load capacity, as well as from several production furnaces, are included. Examples are given for the smelting of pig iron, ferronickel, ferromanganese, ferrochromium, and ferrosilicon. In most instances, the results from the pilot furnaces, such as the values for consumption and product analyses, corresponded fairly well with comparable data from the industrial furnaces. For ferrosilicon, the power consumption in the pilot furnace was higher than that in the industrial furnace.

Current regulations regarding the landfill disposal of asbestos containing wastes are inadequate to ensure there are no ground water or airborne emissions. Accordingly, there is growing recognition that asbestos wastes can only be safely disposed of by using techniques that destroy the hazardous fibres. An innovative high-temperature plasma arc technology (The MAGRAM Process) is being developed for the recovery of magnesium metal from asbestos together with supplementary magnesia containing feedstock. The furnace will operate in. open bath mode with aluminium and/or ferrosilicon being employed as reductant. An important advantage of the process is that magnesium vapour within the furnace will be generated close to atmospheric pressure rather than at reduced pressure under which existing processes operate. Thermodynamic modelling work has been undertaken to define the range of slag composition and furnace temperature under which magnesium production at atmospheric pressure is feasible. The effect of slag chemistry, reductant addition, and temperature on product quality and yield have also been investigated and key aspects have been tested on bench scale. A 300 kW pilot plasma furnace unit has been employed for the treatment of calcined asbestos wastes. Aspects of design and operation of the unit are detailed. This section of the Minerals Yearbook reviews the minerals industries of 29 countries: the 12 nations of the European Community (Belgium, France, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Denmark/Greenland, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, and Ireland); 6 of the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (Sweden, Nor-way, Finland, Iceland, Austria, and Switzerland); Malta; the 8 Centrally Planned Economies of Eastern Europe (the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Poland, Yugoslavia, Albania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria); and the U.S.S.R. Western Europe Western Europe [loosely defined to include the 12 nations of the European Com-munity (EC) and the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)] is the single largest trading area and consumer of raw materials in the world. If Western Europe was at one time an important mining sector, it has now increasingly relegated the role of supplying minerals for its minerals processing industry to its ex-colonies in North and South America, Africa, and Australia. In this regard, Western Europe is the most important determinant of raw materials consumption (and thus raw materials production). There is an important reason for this since Western Europe lies somewhere between Japan at one extreme and the United States and the U.S.S.R. at the other extreme as regards the availability of natural resources.

"This scientific work presents the results of comparative tests of centrifugal concentrators with a vertical and horizontal axis of rotor spinning. The article also describes a qualitative analysis of the behavior of mineral particles in a centrifugal field with fluidization for concentrators with a horizontal axis. The analysis was aimed at studying the effect of the quantity of fluidization holes in the basket on the degree of magnetite recovery and the effect of the basket rotation speed. The experiment demonstrated that concentrators with a horizontal axis are not inferior in terms of the qualitative recovery indicators to concentrators with a vertical axis. The researches also provided facts about the wide practical application of concentrators with a horizontal rotor arrangement. INTRODUCTION Methods of gravity concentration, attractive for their ecological purity, see their revival. First of all, this is due to the invention of centrifugal concentrators with the fluidization of the layer of mineral particles. The creation of a new generation of gravitational centrifugal concentrators made it possible to achieve a tangible breakthrough toward the direction of reducing the grain size of mineral particles effectively divided by density, up to 10 µm at a high production capacity of the vessels reaching 500-600 tons per hour. Such separators enable dressing a crushed ore of flotation grade and in some cases replace the flotation process, especially in primary operations, in joint cycles. In the long term, this method of concentration should significantly expand the scope of application, replace partial flotation processing, ensure the introduction of environmentally friendly energy-saving technologies at ore-processing plants. Summarizing the international experience for the last 30 years, it can be confidently asserted that centrifugal methods of concentration have become widely used in processing schemes for the separation of finely dispersed products in the mining industry. An interest in the creation of installations using centrifugal acceleration for the separation of mineral particles by density has particularly grown. Dozens of centrifugal concentrator designs have been created and continue to be improved. Centrifugal concentrators have a number of obvious advantages, which are especially relevant today. Losses of fine gold during the process of mining are well known. Gold washers screw, spiral separators, jigging machines and sluices traditionally used in the production processes do not solve the problem of fine gold recovery. Table 1 shows the results of comparative tests of a centrifugal concentrator (ITOMAK) and other concentration equipment. According to the research conducted by the company GMRS, Krugersdorp, South Africa (2000), the initial material was gold ore crushed to 150 micrometers (90%)."

Exothermic mass transfer takes place in various areas involving metallic systems, ranging from liquid metal processing operations to the growth of thin films in microelectronics. The formation of intermetallic compounds plays an important role in the exothermic mass transfer of metallic systems. Two types of exothermicity are identified , namely , Microexothermicity and Macroexothermicity. The former is encountered when small amounts of metals are mixed, while the latter is exhibited when a solid metal in a lump form is added into liquid metal. In this paper two types of exothermic mass transfer in metallic systems will be presented and reviewed. Mathematical modelling work for these types of exothermic mass transfer will be analyzed.

"IntroductionThe history of iron ore production in the United States has followed a pattern not far different from that set in the production of non-ferrous ores; the first interest of the prospector and miner being the discovery and development of high-grade ores. In the early stages of development of most mining districts, high-cost low-grade ores are usually of slight interest due to the additional capital investment required in concentrating plants, as well as the increased requirements of •power and other facilities. As the reserves of higher grade ores are depleted and the technical knowledge of ore beneficiation is broadened, production of concentrates from the lower grade ores is stimulated.The real stimulus necessary to arouse serious consideration of beneficiated iron ore in the Lake Superior district has been provided by the serious inroads made in the high-grade ore reserves by two World Wars.The first shipment of high-grade iron ore from the Mesabi range in Minnesota was recorded in 1892, and the first token shipment of concentrates was made 15 years later, in 1907. Not until 1910 did the production of concentrates assume any great importance. A steady increase in concentrate production over the years is shown by the fact that, in 1910, concentrates accounted for 8 per cent of the total shipments from the State, whereas by the time of World War II this percentage had increased to 22 per cent and by 1948 had risen to 26 per cent. It seems a safe assumption that the shipment of concentrated iron ore, from the Mesabi range in particular, will continue to increase even more rapidly from now on, with other iron ranges of the Lake Superior district following this lead."

An automatic control method for the ferrosilicon heavy media process maintains media density within 0.01 specific gravity points. Continued demands for higher grade, competitive products from the Mesabi Range have resulted in experimental work such as that detailed for one concentrator. Various methods, step by step procedures and instruments used at an iron ore beneficiation plant in the development of an automatic control system are described. Work continues and it is hoped that further applications of control instrumentation can be made in the next operating season. The need for instrumentation and automatic control of the various parameters in the heavy media process of iron ore beneficiation has been apparent for some time. Continued demands for higher grade, competitive products from the Mesabi Range have made it necessary to increase the efficiency of the process in every possible way. In a typical heavy media flow scheme for iron ore beneficiation (Fig. 1) a sized, prepared feed (generally about —1% in. to +% in.) is fed to a heavy media separatory vessel, along with a ferrosilicon slurry. A separation of the feed is made on the basis of specific gravity. Low density particles overflow a tailings discharge weir, while high density ore particles sink to the bottom of the high density pool and are moved away to the concentrate discharge chute. Both products are passed over drainage screens and then are cleaned thoroughly of attached ferrosilicon on wash screens. Float material is generally stockpiled, while the sink product is shipped as a final concentrate. Undersize from the drain screens is returned directly to the circulating media sump. Wash screen undersize is cleaned of contaminating ore particles and slimes by passing through magnetic separators. Provision is also made for splitting a portion of the tailings drain undersize into the cleaning circuit if necessary for control of depth of tailings overflow, or for additional cleaning as required. Cleaned ferrosilicon is stored in a densifier and returned to the Circulating media sump as make-up material. Dilution water is also added to this sump to maintain a desired specific gravity of the circulating media. As in any process, operational intelligence is secured only by keeping records of the process variables. Generally apeaking, plant operators have neither the inclination nor the time to keep complete and detailed records of these variables over the course of their shift. Before instrumentation was added to aid the operator, specific gravity was measured by weighing a given volume of pulp at intervals of from 30 to 60 min. Scale readings were made at the beginning and end of each shift. No records were kept of operating conditions, such as rpm of the separatory ves-sel, media level in the machine, tons per hour of the products, and so forth. These items were recorded only when spot checks were made by the metallurgical staff. CONTlNlJOUS DENSITY RECORDING The first process instrument used, other than the usual ammeter on the drive motor of the separatory vessel, was a nuclear density gauge and its associated circular chart recorder. These instruments were used to indicate and record specific gravity of the circulating media. This was a tremendous aid to the operator in that tie was able to observe and correct the specific gravity at any time. There was also added incentive to make frequent corrections because of the permanent record made by the recorder of the densities. The addition of the nuclear density gauge was influential in securing optimum quality and recovery of the heavy media product. Manual control was improved, and it became possible for a good operator to main control within f.05 specific gravity units. This compares with an unknown quantity, estimated at f0.15 gravity units, when manual measurement and control was used. An example of the improvement in manual control over the course of one season's operations is shown in Fig. 2. Chart A is typical of the records made shortly after the gauge was installed. The wide scale acceptance of the heavy media separation is due to its simplicity and efficiency. The two most important variables of the process are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media solids. The almost always present clay in the feed and conse¬quently in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, and its optimum concentration varied between 3-4%.(1,2) Since polymers essentially perform the same function in oil well drilling muds - i.e. to suspend cuttings during drilling - as the fine clay in heavy media separation, this led to the investigation of whether polymers could be used in heavy media separation as supporting agents. During the first phase of the work, it was found that by the controlled addition of polymers, the stability of the heavy media increased without unduly increasing viscosity of the suspensions, thus yielding conditions for more effective and efficient separation. The results of the experiments were reported in a paper at the AIME Centennial Annual Meeting, March 1971.(3) This paper presents the results of the experiment carried out during the second phase of the work.

A resource of low grade good quality diamonds has been discovered through the Diamond Company NL-Moonstone Diamond Corp. Joint Venture. A limited bulk sample diamond test of two large kimberlite pipes on the Kelsey Lake Property, Colorado, has been completed. These kimberlite pipes have petrological and mineralogical indications of the presence of diamond. Small diamonds were recovered from surface samples. Drilling and trenching revealed both pipes were complexes of diatreme facies kimberlite. One pipe contains crater facies kimberlite as well. This is the first reported occurrence of crater facies kimberlite in the Province. Approximately 1000 tonnes of kimberlite rock was excavated and processed through a scrubber -HMS -Sortex -Grease Plant. Significant diamonds were recovered. The diamonds were generally of good color and clarity, with many being in the gem and near gem categories. Grades are considered low however. Additionally, a small potential resource of alluvial diamonds is present.

Rare earth ferrosilicide is a versatile alloy mainly used to control the detrimental effects of sulfur in steel and to modify graphite structures in cast iron. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum conditions to make rare earth ferrosilicon alloy using a preconcentrate produced from a bastnasite type of ore present in the Beylikahir-Eskisehir region of Turkey. This concentrate contained 23.5%REO, 41.37% CaF2, 10.69% BaSO4, 8.50% CaCO3, 4.18%Fe2O3, 2.83% Al2O3, 2.74% SiO2, 1.20% P2O5 and small amount of other oxides. The initial metallothermic reduction of this concentrate using ferrosilicon and aluminum in a graphite crucible placed in a muffle furnace gave very low recoveries due to the difficulties encountered in adjusting the slag composition, temperature and amount of additives. Therefore, two batches of rare earth oxide concentrate containing 61.1% and 81.7% cerium oxide, respectively, that were procured from a Turkish glass producer, were used to optimize with respect to temperature, duration, slag-making additives and amount of reducers. In these experiments, smelting and reduction was done in an induction furnace with graphite crucible, and, ferrosilicon and aluminum were added after melting the charge. As a result, there was no difficulty in obtaining a rare earth ferrosilicon alloy containing 35-55% RE, 5-25% Fe and 20-40% Si, with about 80% metal recovery. When the optimum conditions were applied to the preconcentrate, alloys of similar compositions were obtained with 70-80% recovery. Experiments were also done with mixtures of preconcentrate and rich concentrate, and, recoveries as high as 95% were obtained. Only in this case, to increase the recovery, mixtures had to be charged to the empty graphite crucible after heating the crucible to the required temperature.

This paper describes the progresses used in the manufacture of steel wheel-centres, tyres and axles at the works of the Commonwealth Steel Products Co., Newcastle, N.S.W., Australia. The plant is adjacent to the Northern railway and consists of three main buildings, namely: the foundry, the forging and rolling shop, and the machine shop. The foundry contains a 6-ton Heroult electric furnace, together with all necessary mechanical appliances for moulding. Reheating furnaces, steam hammers and tyre rolling mill are installed in the forging shop. The machine shop contains lathes, boring machines, and hydraulic presses. Until this plant commenced operations all wheels used in Australia were imported, previ.ous to the war, from England and Germany, and latterly from England only. Besides being of great benefit to the country in that there is now a domestic source of supply of these articles, there is also the advantage of retaining the home market; and in addition, a small portion of the population are now engaged in highly technical occupations requiring a great degree of skill. The plant began to operate in October 1919, and by 1921 was in a fair way to meet the domestic demand for those articles of railroad equipment which it manufactures.

The combined value of production of natural abrasives, which includes tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, staurolite, and emery, increased about 21070 in 1989. The increase in the value of staurolite and tripoli production was the result of an increase in the quantity of materials produced and an increase in the unit value. Emery decreased due to the significant decline in the volume of the material produced. Special silica stone experienced both a decrease in unit value and quantity produced. Garnet showed a small increase in quantity, but a decrease in unit value. The silicon carbide industry saw a slight decrease in the quantity produced and a 12070 increase in the value of production. The fused aluminum oxide industry showed a 5070 decline in the quantity produced, but enjoyed a 15070 increase in the value of production. Combined production for both industries decreased 4070 in quantity but increased 13070 in value compared with those of 1988.
