ALL technical men who are planning to visit the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago this summer-and all reports indicate that it will be worth visiting-should try to be there during Engineers' Week, beginning June 26. At that time most of the national engineering societies of the country will hold important meetings in that city. Engineers will thus have an opportunity not only to see the Fair at a time when special programs have been arranged for their benefit, but will have the opportunity to meet their professional brothers and to attend technical sessions of direct interest to them. The A.I.M.E. headquarters will be at the Stevens Hotel, and it will be to the interest of every Institute member who expects to attend the Fair at that time to secure his accommodations as promptly as possible. A request to the Chairman of the Chicago Section, A.I.M.E., or to the Secretary's office in New York, will bring a copy of the program as soon as it is available, together with any in- formation desired about hotel accommodations or other matters. Cyanide leaching of two West African gold ores was studied in multiple laboratories to provide process-engineering data for plant design purposes. Unusually slow leach extraction kinetics were observed using routine cyanide leach test procedures with pregnant solution monitoring. Carbon-in-leach testing, however, showed normal rapid kinetic behavior, with the same ultimate gold extractions being reached in much shorter elapsed times. Kinetic curves based on washed solids assays also exhibited more typical leaching characteristics. The results bore all the hallmarks of some equilibrium inhibition of the leaching. It was surmised that ore gangue components were responsible for weakly adsorbing gold-cyanide complex reaction product, thereby holding up soluble gold in the solid phase. The term ?preg-borrowing? was coined to describe the reversible phenomenon and distinguish it from irreversible preg-robbing. The two ores investigated may represent an extreme form of a more general effect that in most instances might pass unnoticed. The effect can lead to misinterpretation of kinetic leach curve data and underestimation of calculated ore head grades.

This study of the tin-tungsten ore of the Shepherd and Murphy Mine, in central northern Tasmania, was originally undertaken at the request of the Moina Tungsten-Tin Mining Co., N.L., as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of the C.S.I.R.O. It is based on the examination of a suite of specimens supplied by the management, supplemented by a more extensive collection and observations made by the author during a short visit to the mine in October, 1956.The Shepherd and Murphy Mine is at Moina, 36 miles S.W. of Devonport and 22 miles from Sheffield, the nearest railway station. It was worked almost· continuously from 1893 to 1919, when a fire destroyed the mill; to that date it had produced concentrates to the value of £141,000. After a long period of idleness, the mine was re-opened by the present company, but it has been announced recently that unfavourable market conditions have again forced closure.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe mine is on a deeply dissected plateau, about 2,500 ft. above sea level; it lies between the Iris and the Forth Rivers, whose valleys are deep gorges cut to about 400 to 600 ft. above sea level. From Moina westwards to the Iris River, a limestone regarded as part of the Gordon River Group, of Ordovician age, conformably overlies a sandstone containing tubicolar casts which are circular in cross section, half an inch in diameter and up to two feet long, and which resemble marine worm burrows (Elliston, 1953).

OD March 20, 1989, a meeting was held at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center at the request of Senator Pete V. Domenici of New Mexico. The purpose of the meeting was to engender a technical relationship between the National Laboratories and the minerals industry. During the meeting, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, T S Ary, suggested that since the Bureau is the focal point for mining research in the United States, it would be appropriate for the agency to act as the liaison between the National Laboratories and the minerals industry. As the first step in this process, the author was selected to perform a 6-month investigation to better define the proper role of the Bureau in this area. As part of the investigation, the mining and mineral-related technology available at 21 major U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Research Laboratories was reviewed. It was assumed that the broad range of scientific and technical areas covered DOE research would provide fertile ground for mining-related technologies. It was hoped that the applicability of DOE research to this liaison effort would be indicative of Federal laboratories in general.

By the courtesy of Metropolitana Milanese (Milan Underground), roost of the delegates visited on April 12, 1991 the tunnel of "PORTA VENEZIA" STATION of MILANO RAILWAY LINK. The "PORTA VENEZIA" STATION will be the most important in the link and it will he also the largest underground project of the whole railway transport network in Lomhardy. The particular conditions of the soil and the collocation of site in the center of Milano have required new technologies and the technical solution applied to this job is called "Cellular Arch Method" by its designer Prof. P. Lunardi. Our sincere thanks go to Prof. P. Lunardi and Eng. E.M. Pizzarotti of Rocksoil, Milano who have kindly furnished us a technical description of this method. Eng. Pizzarotti was the guide during the visit and gave all the technical explanations to the delegates. THE "VENEZIA" STATION IN THE 2PB SECTION OF THE RAILWAY LINK The excavation of cavities in loose ground, exceeding a certain dimension and at shallow depth, is not feasible using traditional methods: in fact it is not possible to consolidate the ground around the cavity in such a way that homogeneity and resistance is sufficiently guaranteed.

This paper, describing the milling practices at the Minpro plant of the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, Spruce Pine, N. C., is the first of a series being prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on feldspar milling methods and costs in the various feldspar producing areas in the United States. It describes not only the latest practices in feldspar grinding but includes studies of the cost of producing ground feldspar. These cost studies, obviously of interest to every consumer and purchaser of feldspar and to all feldspar grinders, are also of value to the small operator, who is generally prone to understimate his real costs. It describes the latest practices in feldspar milling and includes detailed costs of grinding. The cost tabulations presented show operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Details of costs are given only to the extent that they are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. A description of the recently installed milling unit for the preparation of granular glasspar by graded crushing, and magnetic separation is of particular interest. It illustrates how highly specialized feldspar milling has become, and to what an extent grinders are going to supply consumers with the products best suited for their particular needs.

The report describes the development of preliminary requirement specifications for standardized operating controls for roof bolting machines used in underground coal mining. According to recent statistics, roof bolting continues to be one of the most hazardous occupations in underground coal mining. The two principal hazards to the roof bolter operator are the machine itself and roof falls during the bolting cycle. The lack of standardization of machine controls is a major contributor to this hazardous situation. Observations of roof bolting operations and discussions with roof bolter manufacturers coupled with detailed analyses of roof bolter control design specifications were performed during this study. Detailed roof bolter operator task analyses, commonality of control analyses, and classical link analyses were also performed. The results of these analyses were then used to produce preliminary requirement specifications for standardized controls.

Near misses recorded and reported by workers can provide awarenessto the potential causes of injury and prompt safety management initiatives. Although most companies require near-miss reporting, it is unclear what the value of these reports are, if any, and how they influence subsequent actions or controls to reduce on-the-job risks. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a case study with an aggregates company in which near-miss reports were analyzed at each of their locations over an entire quarter during the summer of 2018. Within that quarter, workers recorded 249 near misses. Of those, 167 were valid near misses that occurred at work. Researchers coded the reports using a qualitative 5 × 5 risk matrix. Of the 167 near misses, 19% were deemed low risk, 25% moderate risk, 30% high risk, and 26% critical risk. Several patterns in the near-miss incidents were documented, including classification of incidents and common corrective actions referenced (i.e., elimination/substitution, engineering control or redesign, work process/procedures, and personal protective equipment). The analysis provides insight into ways that risk communication and management programs can be improved to reengage workers and their situational awareness on the job.

The Tui Mine is an abandoned Pb-Zn mine giving rise to water quality problems in the Te Aroha region of Coromandel, New Zealand. When sampled in September 2002, for example, both the Tui and Tunakohoia Streams draining the mine site exceeded ANZECC (2000) water quality guidelines for aquatic life protection (Cu, Cd and Zn) and recreational quality (Cd). Based on trace metal mass flux (kg/yr) from parts of the mine site, the principal pathways by which Cu, Zn and Cd contamination reach these streams have been identified as:the tailings dam leachate,the diverted stream water from above the dam,the drainage from Adit 5 (which accounts for 95 % of Zn and Cd contamination in Tunakohoia Stream), andto a lesser extent, run-off from waste rock piles below Adit 4 level. Of the various remediation options, which have been proposed for the site, the following are identified as providing the best protection for the Tui and Tunakohoia streams:stabilising the tailings dam embankment and capping the embankment and tailings,constructing and/or cleaning out engineered diversion drains around the perimeter of the tailings dam to divert surface water away from the tailings dam, andinstalling bulkheads within Adit 5. A formal postal survey of the people of Te Aroha (66 respondents from 230 surveys) indicated that their priority was that the site be made safe for the public to visit, and used for recreation. As soil samples in potential recreational areas of the mine site, significantly exceeded guideline values for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and As, soil removal or capping clearly also needs to be part of a remediation plan. Development of the site as a historical/ecotourism area was viewed favourably, as this may encourage more visitors to the Te Aroha area as well as educate local residents.

The minerals that enter welding-rod coatings and fluxes are the main subject of this report. Few mineral producers know just what minerals and what grades and quantities of minerals are required by the welding trade, and it is for their information that this report has been prepared. The various methods of welding are discussed extensively enough to inform this type of audience. Specialists in welding probably will find little on welding that is of value to them, but they may learn something more about the minerals or mineral products that they use. The authors did not find it easy to prepare this publication, and any needed corrections will be welcomed. Regarding welding, research, Jenks4/ 1 points out that while the process of welding in simple in operation, the phenomena attending its use are extremely complicated, and the efficient and safe use of welding requires an understanding thereof. Although the fluxes and the coatings used have solved many problems, many other problems require the joint effort of the whole industry; therefore, it is hoped that this report will be found of practical value.

Christmas morning 2020, an IED in an RV was detonated along an evacuated section of downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The blast damaged over 40 buildings, including AT&T’s Main Central Office and caused internet and cell outages across 1,200 zip codes for three days including the airport and EMS services. Published investigations by the ATF and FBI were inconclusive in determining the explosive composition and size. Video captured a large fireball that may indicate a fuel-air-mixture explosion which would create lower peak pressures than high explosives, but longer pressure duration and significant impulsive loading. Blast pressures were amplified by reflections in the urban environment bordered by the 8-story AT&T building and a row of multi-story historic buildings. Some structures had little damage as they were shielded from the blast pressure by closer buildings, and seemingly far-field structures contained damage from the pressure wave after multiple reflections and propagation through porous parking garages. Damage to the reinforced concrete frame AT&T building included snapped masonry ties, cracking and spall to the closest column, and vertical displacement of the elevator, even with the brakes applied. The historic structures directly across the street from the blast partially collapsed. Initial damage included complete failures of unreinforced masonry façades, broken timber beams, and uplifted roofs. Secondary, progressive collapse took place over months as the brick walls and weakened historic mortar could not resist typical wind and environment loads. One of the close historic structures was renovated in the 1990’s and structural retrofits to comply with building codes were required. The addition of steel columns and façade tie-ins improved survivability and it remained standing with a high percentage of the front brick intact. Generally, the observed blast damage was related to a structural component’s mass and flexibility. Internal timber framing was unscathed, but many steel studs required replacement. Glazing damage was observed several blocks away and many roof membranes were punctured by falling debris. Secondary damage from broken sprinkler lines and loss of environmental control often led to more costly repairs than the initial blast pressure damage. The proliferation of bomb-making knowledge leads to hundreds of bombings each year in the US. Building risk considerations should include explosive threats along with other hazards. ASCE structural standards and design manuals have been published to address these risks and may be useful guides for building construction.

This report3/ gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Eureka County, Nevada, made from September 25 to October 20 and from October 27 to November 5, 1577. During this time, virtually all the districts were visited and many data obtained on active and inactive properties. This report covers the locations of the various districts, geological background, ownership and brief descriptions of mines and prospects, information on past and current operations, and, other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. From the viewpoint of past production in the county, the silver-lead-gold deposits at Eureka have been tie most important, followed by the silver deposits at Cortez and Mineral Hill. The period of greatest activity in the foregoing districts was from 1870 to 1990, when Eureka was one of the principal mining areas in Nevada; the production of lead was sufficient to affect its price in all the commercial centers of the world. Eureka also merits the distinction of being the birthplace of the silver-lead smelting industry in the United States.

The project used blasting methods including design, modelling, drilling and loading of the explosives that had never been used before in Australia, some of these were probably unique in the world.

Fred C. Bond is recognized throughout the mineral processing world as the father of comminution equipment applied science and engineering. The Bond Work Index became a universal standard, and is the most widely used measurement tool for comminution energy consumption. This biography is the story of his lifetime of study, work experiences, experimentation, analyses and findings. His numerous published writings are reviewed. His legacy is one of comminution process engineering that will be used in perpetuity.

Current trends into mining iron ore have seen an increase in the exploitation of problematic orebodies that would typically be disregarded. These bulk materials cause problems within all facets of the material handling stream, from remains left in train wagons to transfer chute blockages, which can cause costly downtime to mining operations (Roberts, 1998). These problematic bulk materials are referred to as wet and sticky material (WSM) due to the adhesive and cohesive nature they possess. Their characteristics can be computationally expensive to model. With the development of discrete element modelling (DEM), in conjunction with advancement in computational power over the past decade, it is now more feasible to model WSMs into the DEM technique.This research will couple two different contact models that can represent the characteristics of a WSM. These models include the Simplified Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (SJKR) and the Easo liquid bridging contact models. The SJKR contact model is an expanded form of the classic Hertz model. This model includes the tensile forces that are in the contact zone between two bodies when they are separated, which the Hertz model failed to capture (Johnson, Kendall and Roberts, 1971). The Easo liquid bridging contact model accounts for the capillary effects and surface tension that will form between two bodies, such as that of a WSM (Soulié et al, 2006). Both of these models were coupled to give the best representation of a WSM, which was simulated using MoleculeX™ (Chen and Williams, 2017) as the software platform.Additionally, this research also investigated the adhesion of problematic iron ore samples onto impact plates under dynamic conditions. An experimental set-up consisting of an apron feeder and inclined impact plate was utilised, to gain an understanding of the way the material builds-up and the possible modes of failure that could be experienced. This was undertaken for different wall liner materials, wall liner angles and moisture contents of the iron ore samples. From this, a series of DEM calibration simulations were conducted on the experimental set-up and particle size distributions (PSD) of the iron ore samples. Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades.Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue Rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill.Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times.This paper explores the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process, and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included.Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers.CITATION:Grigg, N J and Delemontex, G J, 2015. Minerals are vital to any industrialized civilization. Annually, the United States uses more than 4 billion tons of new mineral materials, or about 40,000 pounds per person-about half being mineral fuels and the other half metals and nonmetallics. Stable and economic domestic mining, mineral, metal, and mineral reclamation industries are essential to the economy. The value of United States energy and processed materials of mineral origin exceeds $200 billion annually. Although a number of minerals are imported, especially some designated as "strategic and critical," most U.S. mineral supplies are derived from the domestic mines and processing facilities that you will be seeing, reading about, and visiting as you use this visitor guide. We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is intended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

Four taconite plants were studied to establish the extent of hazard to plant personnel which exists based on long-term exposure to noise. The criteria for evaluation include the 90 dBA and 85 dBA summations of partial exposures. Data from extensive interviews were used to determine all work stations or locations which employees occupied and how much time they spent in ach location in a typical working day. Noise level measurements at every designated location were then made. By means of a computer program, these time and noise level data were us d to find the optimum noise reductions which would be required throughout each plant to meet both noise criteria. Subsequently, each plant was examined in detail so that the apparent sources of noise for each of the locations requiring noise reduction could be delineated. In tabular form, this report presents the hazardous locations for each plant, the existing noise level, the optimum noise reduction which would be required to meet the current and proposed laws, and the sources of noise which produce the existing noise level.
