Bis-basic ethers off fluorene and fluoren-9-substituted derivatives such as tilorone have been reported to inhibit silica-induced fibrosis in rats. The potential antifibrotic potency of 2,7-bis (diethylamino) ethixy fluorine fluorenone (F-9-H.H), fluorenoxime (F-9-one), and fluorenol (F-9-ol) was F-9-axime > F-9-one ~ F-9-H,H > F-9-ol. Since the release of reactive oxygen species and growth factors from alveolar macrophages (AM) in response to silica exposure has been linked to the development of pulmonary fibrosis, the present study was carried out to determine the inhibitory effects of these compounds on rat AM activity in vitro. The following parameters were monitored: (1) cellular viability; (2) zymosan-induced respiratory burst activity (superoxide and hydrogen peroxide release, chemiluminescence, and oxygen consumption) of AM; (3) drug binding to AM; and (4) lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated interleukin- I (IL-1) release from AM. The bis-basic ethers, at 40 did not affect cell viability when incubated with AM for 30 min, but significantly inhibited zymosan-induced macrophage respiratory burst activity. The inhibitory effect of these agents was F-9-oxime > F-9-one ~F-9-H,H > F-9-ol. Binding of these drugs to AM was time and dose dependent, and exhibited the following binding affinity: F-9-oxime > F-9-one > F-9-H,H > F-9-ol. F-9- oxime was shown to inhibit LPS-stimulated IL-I release by AM in a dose-dependent manner. This inhibition of IL-1 release by AM cannot be explained as a decrease in viability. In addition, these drugs were also shown to impair human fibroblast proliferation in response to serum stimuli without impairing cell viability. These results indicate a positive correlation between drug binding to AM or other cell types and their inhibitory effects on cellular activities including oxygen consumption, superoxide release, hydrogen peroxide secretion, chemiluminescence, IL-I release, and proliferation. The ability of-these bis-basic ethers to modify AM and fibroblast functions in vitro suggests that further investigation of their reported antifibrotic potency in vivo is warranted.

INTRODUCTION Today, conventional raise boring is an accepted method of development in underground mines and on major construction projects. Over the years that this technique, and its associated machines and tools, have been under development, many articles have been written on the subject. To a great extent, these papers have reported operating results of one or more specific projects or have been generalized reviews of state-of-the-art machines and tools. This paper is intended as a review of the technique from an operational standpoint. Conventional raise boring, as opposed to the related variants box hole drilling and underground blast hole drilling, is a two step process consisting of the pilot hole drilling and reaming cycles. This author has covered the subject of pilot hole drilling in another article (1) . A good review of the current machines and equipment has been presented by Monroe (2) and an overall review of this entire technology was published by E&MJ (3) and Mining Journal, April, 1983 (4) . The subject of the reaming cycle is presented here together with some of the technical aspects of how the drilling tools are intended to be used. THIS GLOSSARY is published lay the Bureau of Mines as a contribution too the mining literature to fill a long-felt need for a compilation of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The first step toward preparation of the glossary was taken in October 1955 when the Diamond Core Drill Manufacturers Association (DCDMA) proposed that the Bureau of Mines undertake the cons compilation and publication of a glossary of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The work was authorized in July 1956, and a preliminary draft of the glossary was completed in may 1958. Copies of the draft were submitted for review to members of the DCDMA and appropriate personnel of the Bureau of Mines. The final draft, incorporating the many helpful suggestions of the reviewers representing both the diamond-drilling industry and the Bureau of Mines, was completed in March 1959.

IN 1922, the writer communicated to the Institute a paper entitled The Development of the Coal Industry in Canada (1), which summarized the considerations set out in a series of papers (2) concerned with coal-mining in Canada which he had presented in 1920 and 1921. This paper contained a forecast by decades, commencing 1920, of Canadian coal production, importation, consumption, and exports, based on anticipated rate of population increase, and continuation of the gradual increase in the per capita rate of coal consumption in Canada that had taken place every year up to 1920. This old district is a major zinc and lead source and minor copper and barite source. Ores are chiefly in the Galena Dolomite and in limestones and dolomites of the Decorah and Platteville Formations, all of Middle Ordovician age. Locally, deposits have been mined from Lower Ordovician dolomites and Upper Cambrian sandstones. Small deposits of lead, zinc, and iron sulfides have been found in Upper Ordovician Maquoketa Shale and in Lower and Middle Silurian Edgewood, Kankakee, and Hopkinton Formations. No post-Precambrian igneous rocks are known in the region, and the granitic and metasedimentary Precambrian basement rocks unconformably underlie the district at depths of 1500 to 2000 feet. The strata are gently flexed and faulted, probably largely the result of gentle compressive and rotational adjustments in the underlying crystalline basement, especially along lineaments between basement blocks. Folds of three orders ·of magnitude are recognized, and many related reverse, strike-slip, and normal faults of small to moderate displacements are present. Zinc-lead deposits are commonly linear, arcuate, or elliptical in plan. Most ore occurs as vein fillings in fractures and as breccia fillings and lining vugs, but some is in bedded replacements and impregnations of wall rocks. The ore is in shears, small reverse and bedding- plant faults, joints, and solution-slump structures related to intermediate and small folds. The main primary minerals in their general sequence of deposition are quartz, illite, dolomite, pyrite, marcasite, cobaltite(?), sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, millerite, barite, and calcite. Wall-rock alterations include solution of the carbonate rocks, silicification, dolomitization, clay alteration, and sanded dolomite. Oxygenisotope, trace-element, lead-isotope, and sphalerite- stratigraphy studies are in progress. Fluid inclusions in sulfide and gangue minerals are filled with concentrated brines at 120° to 40°C. Sulfides are directly replaced by supergene minerals above the water table at 50 to 100 feet in depth. In this relatively cool climate and limestone environment, smithsonite is in pseudomorphs after sphalerite; solution transport and redeposition of supergene minerals are rare. Ore genesis is postulated by rising hot-water solutions-a mixture of heated connate, magmatic, and meteoric waters.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) NICKEL has always been a fruitful mother of problems. Previous to the year 1906 nickel was regarded as an element replacing iron in copper-mattes, and it was believed that the same laws which governed the elimination of iron could be applied-to nickel. This conception has lately undergone a complete change, and nickel in all its stages is now regarded as an element replacing copper; in other words, copper-nickel is considered now as two elements, but as one metal. When we commenced our investigations on Monel metal we made a great many experiments on the conversion of mattes, both high copper and high nickel. We studied closely the composition of the mattes and the changes produced by the blow. We found in all cases certain agreements which we believe are due to some law. Briefly stated, our conclusions are as follows 1. Nickel is not an element replacing iron in matte. 2. Nickel-copper alloys act in the matte-blow like one metal. 3. Nickel-copper alloys follow, during the matte-blow, exactly the same laws as govern. the behavior of copper alone. This brings up the question : What are the laws governing the production of metallic copper, and what are the relations copper to sulphur and iron during the Bessemer blow ?

"In many mineral processing plants ore is reclaimed from a stockpile using multiple feeders. The discharge from these feeders is combined onto a single conveyor from which total tonnage is measured. Typically, operators set feeder output ratios to adjust the proportion of total tonnage drawn from each feeder. From a process control perspective, this system is not easy to control because the response time of each feeder depends on the distance from the feeder to the weightometer. This paper proposes a simple and elegant process control strategy to manage feeder ratio changes and the associated long and varying process dead-times. Changes in feeder speed are delayed and filtered to compensate for transport delays between feeders. The strategy was evaluated by simulation and installed on a mill feed system.ResumenEn numerosas plantas procesadoras de minerales, el mineral es extraido desde una pila de almacenamiento usando varios alimentadores. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, USBM reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that: appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in "" proceedings of conventions and seminars; in' reference books; and in other non-USBM publications. The concept of disposing of liquid industrial wastes by deep-well injection is not a new one. Brines associated with crude oil long have been disposed of in this manner, with the additional benefit of aiding secondary oil recovery. More recently, with the expansion of nuclear energy, the lethal, highly radioactive wastes which are by-products of the fission process have created severe disposal problems. During the past ten years, a variety of industries have resorted to subsurface disposal, some of the details of which are given elsewhere (1,2). The list reveals wide variations in injection rate, pumping pressure, cost, and waste disposition. Included are successful installations in Western Pennsylvania.

The goal of the U.S. Bureau of Mines diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground mines. This research has led to significant advances in aerosol measurement and to the development of more effective emission controls. This Information Circular contains reports of some of the presentations made at the Bureau's Information and Technology Transfer Seminar on Diesels in Underground Mines given in Minneapolis, MN, on September 29-30, 1992. The seminar emphasized the measurement and control of diesel particulate matter emissions. Topics covered include a discussion of the health issues associated with the use of diesel equipment underground, an overview of regulations, measurement techniques for diesel exhaust aerosol, levels of diesel exhaust pollutants found in mines, and modern emission controls. An appendix is included that contains a report describing the capabilities of the Bureau's diesel emissions research laboratory, two papers describing the effects of engine maintenance or: emissions, a paper describing the monitoring of carbon dioxide in mine air as an indicator of air quality, a glossary, and a list of abbreviations and acronyms.

This paper is directed at interested parties outside the Beach Sand Industry : the scope is quite broad. The geomorphology described is a successful working hypothesis which guided the author during prospecting and pegging campaigns : the author is not an expert in this field. The test data used in the text, for illustrative purposes, is original and may constitute a contribution to the state of the art. The operation- al and design philosophy embodied in the text is personal and describes the author's methods : all practising exponents would differ in some degree amongst themselves on these subjects. In this paper, no criticism of any existing operation or brand of equipment is intended and names are used to maintain a real contact with the subject matter. The author believes that the operational and design techniques evolved in the Beach Sand Industry under continual duress, have a wider application in the mining industry. This glimpse of the Industry is intended to enhance the respect for the present and past members. Space does not permit individual acknowledgements.

"INTRODUCTION The object of this investigation was to demonstrate a satisfactory method of storing slack subbituminous coal in open pits in a manner,that would minimize the cause of the physical deterioration and would have a practical application.The storage of coal by industrial plants is to their advantage, since an adequate operating supplying of fuel is available at all times as insurance against transportation delays, shortages, and strikes. Furthermore, it is possible to participate in low seasonal freight rates and mine costs by permitting the railroads to utilize idle equipment and by taking advantage of the off-peak production at the mines. For a number of years, one of the larger beet-sugar companies operating in the Rocky Mountain region has taken advantage of the lower prices and seasonal production of subbituminous slack coal during the summer months and purchased a large proportion of its requirements for the annual winter campaign. This company, operating sugar-refining plants in the 1943 campaign, used 256,613 tons of subbituminous coal. Of this quantity, 166,636 tons was purchased during the off-peak season and stored for use during the winter. It is the practice of this concern to place coal purchased through the months of January to October in underwater storage for use in the beet-sugar campaign, which lasts from October to as late as, January. The beet-sugar refining ""campaign"" period starts immediately after the beginning of the beet harvest and lasts 60 to 70 days."

"The size of mills driven by ring-gear or by a gearless solution has significantly increased in the last years. This has created additional challenges for the driven equipment. The requirements for the mechanical devices and the power grid have become more demanding. Controlled soft starting and operation, especially in dual pinion mills, as well as the protection of the equipment has gained importance. The selection of the drive solution for the mill therefore becomes more critical. Besides the classical criteria such as performance, efficiency and capital costs other factors come in the evaluation of the system such as flexibility and optimization of operation, reliability and the ageing of the grinding equipment.Variable speed solutions offer significant advantages over conventional fixed speed drives due to their application specific features and process optimization capabilities, even for ball mills where these are not seen yet as a must.The initial capital costs are higher than some of the direct on-line solutions however the benefits for the operation during the lifetime of the mill generated by the use of converter solutions justify the additional higher investment.INTRODUCTIONThe method of powering mills such as AG, SAG and Ball has a long and technically interesting history. It can be said; almost every decade in the last half century had its own trend. The trend was dominated by the market demand, by the process development and requirement of the mechanical and the electrical technology but mostly by the price of the applied technology.All has started about 50 years ago with mill diameters less than 20 feet driven by fix speed synchronous or wound rotor motors with the power of about 2 MW. Around 10 years later, the mill sizes increased, but the necessary torque could not be transmitted by one pinion therefore dual pinion solutions were developed to power the mills. However, realization of the dual pinion solution was only possible when load could be evenly shared between the two pinions."

Stable Nitroxyl polymers, such as poly (2,2,6,6-tetramenthyl-1-piperidinyloxy-4-yl methacrylate) (PTMA), are known to be effective as cathode active materials for lithium rechargeable betteries.The nitroxide radicals displayed a reversible and very rapid redox performances.We present a new synthesized method to get PTMA powder, then a doctor-blading method was used to prepare the PTMA composite electrodes, enabling successful production of homogeneous electrodes. It was characterized through FT-IR and SEM methods.The organic radical battery consists of lithium metal anode and PTMA cathode with an active material content of 65wt%.The best performance is achieved with a thin cathode that shows nearly 100% utilization of the active material (111mAh/g) at 0.1C.Through the electrochemical tests, it was found that there was a stable plateau at 3.5V while discharging. Besides, the cycling stability and rate capability were measured in detail. Although they showed a certain quantity of irreversible capacity on the first cycle, the capacity stabilized after the second cycle.

At the heart of the mining process are a number of basic and fundamental tasks whose regular and repeated performance constitute the mining cycle. As will be discussed presently, these tasks are the basic components of the mining system. Section 9, Production Operations, provides the mine designer and engineer with an understanding of these tasks and with sufficient design principles to allow this person to create an efficient mine system. This section is meant to be an introduction and adjunct to subsequent sections that describe specific mining systems. However, sufficient design information is included here for the independent design of mine systems that may not be described elsewhere or for subsequent verification of existing designs. For the purposes of this section, mining subsumes excavation; thus this material applies to any excavation process. Accordingly, this section is written in general enough terms to include both surface and underground mining. It may be used also for civil engineering excavations that often involve the same steps. Obviously, the actual procedures undertaken in any specific mining system will appear to be very different from those taken in any other system. This is certainly true when comparing surface with underground methods. Yet the fundamental principles are often the same. This segment is written to explicate the basics. Wherever appropriate, the section will suggest the differences between the application process to surface or to underground mining.

ALL live producers and manufacturers of metals and alloys are investigating new uses for their products. The tin and tin-plate industry is no exception. One-third of all the new tin mined and refined is consumed in making tin plate. Several billions of cans are each year made from tin plate for the preservation of nearly 200 kinds of food. There are more than 500 tin-plate mills or individual stacks in the United States, which country makes more tin plate than all other countries combined and exports large quantities. As much as 1,800,000 tons of till plate has been made in a year in this country, and 28.000 tons of tin has been used in this period for this purpose. In sonic years a third of the till is so consumed; in 1933 it was half of the supply.

Foreword Following the explosion in the Hillcrest mine, which occurred in the evening of Sunday, September 19th, 1926, and in which two men lost their lives, the writer was invited by the Hon. J.E. Brownlee, Premier of Alberta, to conduct an investigation into the causes of the disaster, and to make such recommendations as seemed advisable with a view to minimizing as far as possible the chance of future explosions in this and similar Alberta coal mines. Accordingly, the mine was visited, and extensive investigations were made underground on October 21st, 2.2.nd, and 25th, in company with Mr. John T. Stirling, Chief Inspector of Mines for Alberta, Mr. Moses Johnson, District Inspector for the Crowsnest Pass District, Mr. J as. A. Richards, Inspector of Mines, Edmonton, and also Mr. Thomas Davies, manager, and other officials of the Hillcrest mine. Hearings of the coroner's inquest were also attended on October 20th and 23rd, when testimony regarding the explosion was given by various witnesses. The following paper summarizes my general observations in tracing the place of origin of the explosion, and my efforts to determine the cause of ignition. Certain recommendations arc also made, and the writer invites discussion on these and the other matters dealt with in the paper.

The data reported in this bulletin are largely the result of experiments conducted by the Salt Lake City station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the department of metallurgical research of the University of Utah. The work on lead is only one of the phases of the investigations carried on at that station during the years 1914 to 1916. The results of similar work with zinc ores and with copper and other ores will be published in future reports of the bureau.

"Several studies on the bulk density of coals prepared for byproduct-oven use were undertaken during the war by the Bureau of lanes in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Administrator and with the advice of the Coke Production Committee. The primary purpose of these studies was either to produce more uniform coke or to increase the throughput of existing facilities or both; the goal was increased Production of steel for war. As these studies were made, detailed reports were sent to the individual companies with whom the Bureau cooperated; also two reports,5/6/on the general subject of bulk-density control were published. In the course of the work, data were gathered that now prove of value in judging the merit of carious methods of testing bulk density and the limits of application of each method in byproduct-oven operations.Since the cessation of hostilities, the .Bureau section (Coke Production Survey Section) that conducted this work has been liquidated, but it was felt advisable to prepare a report on the accumulated experience so that it would be in a form available for the use of the industry and also as a base for any further research on the control of fluctuating bulk densities in coke ovens.It is hoped that the data and experiences recorded herein will be of material assistance to the many who have had difficulty in obtaining reproducible results in bulk-density testing. Since the data were gathered in the course of extending aid to individual plants in minimizing the deleterious effects of fluctuations in bulk density of oven charges on the quality and quantity of coke produced, certain desirable phases of an over-all investigation were not covered. However, on certain of these phases qualitative indications are available and the policy followed herein is that suggested by the American Society for Testing Materials Manual on Presentation of Data7/ that lacking quantitative information, relevant material should be included even though it ""may be qualitative in character, some may even be vague."""

Abstract - Intrusive features of cupriferous noritoids from the deeply eroded Proterozoic granite-gneiss terrane of the Okiep Copper District in South Africa illustrate the emplacement of basic magmas into a mid- to lower-crustal environment. The small, easterly trending intermediate to basic intrusions of the so-called Koperberg Suite display a wide variety of geometries, occurrence and emplacement modes, including dike-, sill- and plug-like bodies. Coeval granulite-facies metamorphism, partial melting and ductile deformation of country rock gneisses during intrusion of the basic magmas led to emplacement and dilation processes of the intrusions which differ significantly from those described for dikes and sills at shallow crustal levels. Regional tectonic stresses are largely negligible due to very low differential stress (?1 - ?3) during deformation and intrusion, which permits emplacement at high angles to the principal compressive stress and which follows favorably inclined structural anisotropies. Dilation of the basic intrusions is largely determined by compositional differences of host rocks and occurs by thermal erosion, i.e., assimilation of wall rock gneisses. Low length-to-width ratios of basic to ultrabasic dikes and predominantly diaper -like outlines of mesocratic bodies are indicative of low viscosity contrasts between the mafic magmas and high-grade metamorphic host-rock gneisses. Buoyancy-controlled ascent of the basic to intermediate intrusions is expressed by a broad compositional zoning of basic bodies with respect to the granite-gneiss stratigraphy. Various intrusion modes within the stratigraphic column of the granite-gneiss sequence reflect a lithological and structural stratification of the seemingly homogeneous granite-gneiss terrane.
