This is the second of two interrelated studies of waterborne transportation. The first study discussed transportation of mineral commodities on the inland waterways of the South-Central States.2 Together, the two surveys describe and analyze the flow of foreign and inland waterborne commerce of the gulf coast. All the principal mineral-industry imports and exports of the gulf coast are mentioned in the report, including metals, nonmetals, and mineral fuel products, The gulf coast foreign trade in mineral industry products was determined to be composed of a small number of commodities.

THE second meeting of 'the Open-Hearth Committee, 'sub-division of the Iron and Steel Committee of this Institute, was held at the Hotel Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio; on Oct. 13-15. On Oct: 12, the Open-Hearth Superintendents visited the plants of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. and. the Republic Iron and Steel Co. These men were courteously entertailled by the two companies and every facility for a thorough inspection was furnished. Luncheon was severed at the plant bf the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. The meeting was opened Tuesday morning with addresses by J. V. W. Reynders, President of the Institute, and Herbert M. Boylston, Chairman of the Ohio Section of the Institute. E. A. Whitworth, of the Gathmann Engineering Co., presided at the meeting and L. B. Lindeinuth was secretary.

For most practical rock engineering purposes, stress versus strength conditions around underground openings for which rock masses fail and their various modes of failure, are reasonably well-understood and predictable. Some rock masses and particular rock types fail slowly and relatively quietly. However, others can fail rapidly, violently and maybe with the ejection of significant broken rock. In some countries and in some mines, the latter style of violent fracturing and failure of the rock mass is referred to as ‘strain bursting’. It can be alarming and extremely hazardous to nearby miners and machines. For such situations, the design and installation of appropriate ground support, to provide a safe work place, can be challenging. At any particular mine site, it’s often generally understood which local rock masses (rock types) are prone to strain bursting. Competent and strong siliceous rocks and some massive sulphides are often the main offenders. While some neighbouring, equally-competent and strong rocks might also fail, they do so more quietly and without ejection. To understand this contrast, a better understanding of the fracturing process is required other than simple and standard strength versus stress considerations. Suites of standard intact rock properties from numerous Australian mines have been used to define and help understand different high-stress failure styles for component intact rock; especially those prone to violent fracturing (strain bursting). Simple considerations of micro-fracturing (defects in the intact material), plus the available energy at failure versus the energy consumed during fracturing, distinguishes between over-stressed and competent rock types that fracture violently and those that don’t. That the maintenance of proper air conditions is a most important factor in the control of occupational hazards is shown by the large amount of material presented each year through the technical journal's on the effects on workers of injurious dusts, gases, and variations in temperature and humidity.. SUMMARY OF RECENT LITERATURE ON EFFECTS ON WORKERS OF EXPOSURE TO DUSTS The subject of the control of dust and dust diseases continues to be a matter of serious concern in most of the industrial countries of the world, as indicated by the following summary of reports published in a number of foreign countries as well as in the United States. Australia. The Workmen's Compensation Act of 1920 for New South Wales3 provided for the promulgation of schemes for the compensation of workers dis- abled by silica or other dust. In 1924 the prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis among Sydney stonemasons, quarrymen, sewer miners and rockchoppers was investigated by a Technical Committee of Inquiry, appointed upon the recommendation of the New South Wales Board of Trade. The findings of this committee were published by the Government in 1925. No scheme was promulgated by the Government and in 1926 the Act was amended limiting its scope to workmen disabled by disease caused by silica-dust. This was promulgated and gazetted on September 16, 1927, and applies to men working in sandstone as stonemasons, quarrymen, rockchoppers, and sewer miners in the County of Cumberland.

High-fidelity, immersive training is known for its learning and logistical benefits. While other industries have used virtual reality (VR) for decades, the same uptake has not been seen in mining. NIOSH recently developed an adaptable, scalable VR training platform, VR Mine Rescue Training (VR-MRT), which has attracted significant industry interest. NIOSH is using VR-MRT to understand the barriers to adoption and implementation of VR. As a part of a larger effort to assess the effectiveness and implementation of VR-MRT, researchers have conducted pre-implementation interviews. In this paper, the authors use feedback from individuals at various implementation levels to assess the acceptability and appropriateness of VR-MRT and identify potential implementation barriers for VR more generally. Researchers also describe ongoing efforts to overcome these barriers as NIOSH works to position VR-MRT as a supplemental resource more generally for mine safety training.

The United States has extensive reserves of peat. Peat and muck lands are estimated at approximately 79 million acres, with reserves of 13.8 billion net tons. Within the past decade domestic production of peat has increased 2-1/2 times, and apparent consumption has tripled. During the same period imports have increased greatly, and in 1955 they almost equaled domestic production. The substantial increase in the demand for peat in the United States was due chiefly to expanding markets in agriculture and horticulture, for the reason that in this country peat is used primarily as a source of organic matter to improve the physical condition of mineral soils and as a mulch for shrubbery. A valuable constituent of any soil is its organic matter, and its depletion will injure cultivated soils and subject them to greater erosion.

In recent years there have been many changes in mine ownership due to the on-going rationalisation towards larger mining companies. Larger companies inevitably find it hard to manage small mining operations and in many cases smaller mines do not fit corporate resource, production and profit criteria. Smaller companies are more suited to managing these medium or small scale mines and are tendering for the purchase or lease of mines that larger companies wish to dispose of. In addition to these factors there has also been a trend (especially in Western Australia) for mines to continue operating at ever increasing depths. This in turn has led to more mines operating in high stress environments and experiencing damaging seismicity. Assessing the viability of seismically active mines from a takeover or purchase point of view should involve analysing the risk profile of every aspect on mining that could be affected by adverse seismicity. This includes assessing current and alternative mining methods, mine designs, support systems, extraction sequencing, monitoring and blasting. This paper includes discussion on items that need to be assessed when considering the purchase of seismically active mines, with experience gained from some recent studies in Western Australia. In these cases it was apparent that quantification of previous seismic history on itÆs own was a totally inadequate method of assessing minewide seismic risk potential. A more holistic approach is required, taking into account all aspects of relevant data, all the minewide effects of seismic activity and all possible means of mitigating those effects.

(communication to the Secretary*): The hold experiment of Mr. James Gayley in drying the blast used in the Isabella furnace has attracted the attention of the whole metallurgical world, and has given rise to a wide discussion of the reasons for its great success. Mr. Gayley and the capitalists who backed him in his work deserve congratulations on the success of the venture, not only because it succeeded, but because they have been rewarded far beyond the maximum that could be expected from theory or probability. To state the case in its simplest terms, all that could have been predicted was: (1) that the removal of the moisture from the blaet would result in the saving of the heat required for its decomposition, representing from 3 to 5 per cent. of the heat-value of the coke used; hence about that quantity of fuel might be saved; (2) that the furnace would be somewhat more independent of variations in the weather; (3) that the campaign would be a little hotter; and (4) that the speed of the blowing-eugines would be decreased, at least in amount proportionate to the reduction in temperature of the air led to them. I do not think anyone anticipated a much larger output per day. The results actually attained were: (1) the furnace made an increase of 24.86 per cent. in the output of pig-iron per day; (2) it consumed 19.6 per cent. less coke per ton of pig-iron made; (3) the blowing-engines were run 15.8 per cent. slower; and (4) the saving in power made up for the power required to run the refrigerating-plant. IN a paper published three years ago,' the term "silicic chemistry" was used for the first time to emphasize the increasing importance of the chemistry of silicon in science and technology. The development through which the colloid chemistry of siliceous matter has gone since then is in itself ample proof that the coining of this new term for this branch of colloid science was not presumptuous. Until quite recently, however, silicic chemistry concerned itself only with the composition and colloidal properties of natural and synthetic siliceous matter, but had not paid much attention to the genesis of this matter, particularly to that of the clay minerals. What is even more disturbing, particularly from an educational point of view, is the fact that neither mineralogy, geology, nor metallurgy has fully realized the important role colloidal phenomena must have played in the genesis of our planet and the formation of minerals generally speaking. Considering the importance of colloid chemistry today in the fields just mentioned, it is not surprising that the theories most agreed upon by geologists and mineralogists for the origin of clay minerals are not acceptable from a strictly colloid chemical point of view for the genesis of these most important and most abundant components of the earth. Of all the theories pertaining to the origin of clay minerals, those still most accepted by geologists and mineralogists are the "residual clay" and the "transported clay" theories.15 The former is based primarily on the assumption that the formation of clay minerals is the result of surface weathering of fresh rocks, or is due to the action of solutions. Albert Einstein once said, ?the important thing is not to stop questioning.? In the mining industry, a lack of inquisitiveness may lead to a blissful ignorance but it certainly will not increase efficiencies. While one may claim necessity is the mother of invention, questioning and analyzing how methods and systems can be improved is the catalyst to discovering necessities. Understandably, when working in the middle of Canada?s oil sands, where trucks operate around the clock every day of the year, it is nearly impossible to pull the nose from the grindstone long enough to provide thorough analysis. But, fortunately, some manufacturers/inventors have assisted by examining the process and the ensuing headaches within this application.

This bibliography contains 3,062 different citations to technical and scientific literature about helium and alpha-particles abstracted by 13 abstract service publications during 1963. Multiple subject classification has increased the total number of entries to almost 5,000. Helium citations are listed by 23 major classifications. The number of subclassifications has been greatly increased to minimize the time required for literature search. The use of automatic data processing has been extended in compiling the bibliography.

This paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in conlmercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordaq4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. Analysis of Steeling Silver Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same ana,lysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry I1 in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. This is the final article in a three-part series on microcomputers and application software in the mineral industry. The first article covered microcomputer terms and concepts. The second discussed exploration and mining software. This article will examine plant, administrative, and geotechnical software. Every effort has been made to be current in the latest software developments. Rapid change, however, is a fact of life in the computer world and any omission is inadvertent. Introduction Geotechnical disciplines have received considerable attention in software programming. Calculations are repetitive and the formulas needed to solve them are not extremely complicated. These programs are ideally suited to the microcomputer and the microcomputer is ideally suited to the consulting geologist or engineer, due to its low cost and reliability. In fact, the advent of the Apple (a registered trademark of Apple Computer Inc.) and, more recently, the IBM personal computer has caused an explosion of inexpensive software programs available to the microcomputing public. Another area that has benefited from computerization, although not in the same way, has been mineral beneficiation. Here, process control for start-up or phase-down operations has been used in newer plants for some time. Programs to perform various calculations are becoming more common as micros increase in number. Tappi Journal has a section with solutions to handheld-calculator and microcomputer problems. Process Modeling Most process modeling is still done only on mainframes. One such program is called ASPEN PLUS (a registered trademark of Aspen Technology), and a one-week course is recommended so the user can best use the program. This program is available through timesharing from University Computing Co. Programs to find an optimal solution using Linear Programming (LP) have been around for some time. Also, plant process simulation has been possible using simulation programs. Both simulation and LP are expensive to program and run. Although there are LP programs available for some micros, the user must be fairly knowledgeable about how to set up the problem. This is because each problem must be set up as a unique program that typically requires custom programming. There are some programs that can handle blending of mine crudes and examine economic parameters over the life of the mine. Plant Applications Areas relating to mine and plant applications with programs available for micros are maintenance, production reporting, inventory, accounting, and personnel scheduling. Maintenance Maintenance typically requires that certain jobs be performed in a particular sequence and parts be ordered with enough lead time for maintenance to take place on time. There is, therefore, a critical sequence of tasks that must be performed or the scheduled maintenance will not take place. At the Armatcuk mine in Turkey, various modifications of sublevel methods have been tried during the last decade in an effort to eliminate gob fires, dangers from roof falls, and surface subsidence, and also to increase extraction efficiency. From the experience thus gained, it was decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits, considering the existing geological conditions and coa1-seam characteristics, was hydraulic stowing. This paper examines trends in the working techniques of hydraulic stowing and discusses the favorable results and technical problems that the method produced at Armutcuk. The Armutcuk mine, a subsidiary of Eregli Coal Mines (EKI), produces 1300 tons of run-of-mine coal daily from thick (about 10-90 ft) and highly dipping (about 50-90°) coal seams. The coal is highly volatile with good coking properties that make it highly suitable for industrial use. Most of this coal is used in the iron and steel industry at Eregli on the Black Sea coast. Complete recovery of the coal is of vital importance to industrial development and progress. Initial coal extraction was carried out by means of a sublevel mining system modified to accommodate local geological conditions and coal seam characteristics. This method is similar to that employed in metalliferous mines. Several problems arose from the application of the method, one of them being the prevalence of gob fires which caused periodic shutdowns in some sections. To achieve maximum coal extraction with minimum dilution, to eliminate gob fires and surface subsidence, and to reduce fatal accident rates, a decision was taken to change from this method to a hydraulic stowing system. The pres- ence of large deposits of conglomerate and sandstone on the surface contributed to the decision to employ this new method. Although hydraulic stowing practices have been carried out in America and Germany, Upper Silesia may, so far as coal is concerned, be considered the birthplace of the method. Here the process was adapted to thick coal seams on a large scale to reduce dangers from gob fires and damage from surface subsidence. Today, the mining system is not only widely used in the coal mines of France, the Saar, India and Poland, but has also been successfully applied to the iron ore and potassium salt mines in Russia and Germany. LOCATION AND HISTORY The Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field, the most western outcrop of the North Anatolian coal basin, extends for five miles along the Black Sea coast (Fig. 1). The Armutcuk Mine is situated on the southern boundary of the coal field about 40 miles from Zonguldak and about 12 miles from Eregli. The history of coal mining in the North Anatolian coal basin goes back more than a century. Mining commenced on a small scale in the Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field in the late 1880's, and from this time until nationalization in 1940 the mines were operated by private Turkish and foreign interests. In 1940, Eregli Coal Mines was established to takeover the management of these enterprises. The Armutcuk Mine was developed for the first time in the mid-1940's. Since then it has been in continuous production and it now produces an annual 440,000-ton run-of-mine output from which 320.000 tons of salable coal is obtained. MINE GEOLOGY The carboniferous inlier of the Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field crops out over an area about three miles long and one mile wide. The major part of the inlier consists of the Namurian formation with only a relatively small area of Westfalian-A visible on the surface (Fig. 2). The classical definition of a beneficiation engineer as one who treats an ore in order to separate and discard worthless fractions by essentially physical means is obsolete. Technology in the profession has advanced so rapidly during the last two or three years that educators have not been able to coin definitions to keep up with the pace. In the past some people have hesitated to include leaching or even agglomeration as minerals beneficiation, because of the major chemical changes involved. This view has fallen by the wayside, especially because a majority in the profession have become actively involved in extraction and pyro processes that go far beyond the original definition of mineral dressing. To say that there is a great revival of interest in leaching is putting it mildly, for the uranium business, like the gold business, now depends almost entirely on leaching. This revival of leaching, long overdue in mineral engineering, has been stimulated this year, especially as a result of the relaxation of security restrictions surrounding the recovery of uranium from its ores. It has brought new unit operations to minerals beneficiation, namely ion exchange and solvent extraction. These operations have appeared as resin-in-pulp, solvent-in-pulp, and liquid-liquid systems. In many cases these leaching and separation procedures, now reaching the production stage, have been engineered by minerals beneficiators. The trend toward leaching has also had impact on the technology of beneficiating other nonferrous minerals, especially copper, manganese, columbium, tantalum, nickel, cobalt, titanium, and the rare earths.

The Nonmetals Division studies problems relating to the use of minerals, many of which are important to national defence for purposes other than the extraction of metals. In fact, virtually all of the work of the division has been diverted to investigations pertaining to better use of the Nation's natural nonmetallic is resources as weapons of defense. The experiment stations of the division are at Norris, Tenn.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Seattle, Wash.; and College Park, Md. Studies involving the application of electric power to the nonmetallic minerals are conducted at the Electrotechnical Laboratory at Norris, and investigations on mineral-dressing treatment are conducted mainly at the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa. The cleaning and preparation of coal are studied at both Tuscaloosa and the Northwest Experiment Station Lit Seattle (other projects relating to utilization of coal are conducted by the Coal Division of the Bureau of Mines). Problems covering the use of minerals and fundamental problems as to their properties are studied at College Park.

SECOND only to the February Annual Meeting of the Institute are the Regional and Divisional meetings held in the fall of each year. Six such gatherings are scheduled in the next the months, with something likely to interest every member of the Institute. A brief résumé of the programs follows. Regional Meeting Vancouver T HE regional meeting of the Institute will be held at Vancouver, Sept. 13 to 20, in conjunction with the annual western meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The pro gram appeared on page 350 of MINING AND METALLURGY for July and-proof of careful preparation-a month later re- quires no correction and little elaboration. On the technical side there are few changes. A new item on the Wednesday morning program is the paper, "Investigation of Residential-type Stokers," by H. F. Yancey, supervising engineer, Northwest Experiment Station. U. S. Bureau of Mines, Seattle. As to entertainment the meeting is taking on some most pleasurable aspects. Two notable excursions have been arranged.

"During the last two decades lamproites have joined kimberlites as the only two known primary sources of economic quantities of diamonds. This paper contrasts the petrography, primary and xenocrystic mineralogy and pipe geology of these petrogenetically separate rock types. The petrographic discrimination of kimberlites and lamproites from each other, as well as other rock types found during diamond prospecting, is discussed. Kimberlites and lamproites can be classified texturally and mineralogically. Such classifications highlight the differences between, and among, lamproites and kimberlites. The implications of these differences for diamond exploration programs are discussed, with particular emphasis on the application of petrography. IntroductionKimberlite was the term coined in the late 19th century to describe the host rock of diamond at the type locality, Kimberley, South Africa (Lewis, 1887, 1888). Innumerable kimberlites are now known worldwide; some of them contain economic quantities of diamond (e.g. South Africa, Botswana and Russia) while many are barren. Jennings (1989) suggests that less than 3% of the known kimberlites can be considered to be commercial. Kimberlite was thought to be the only important primary source of diamond for approximately a century. Until the late 1970s, lamproites were thought to be only academic curiosities. Some workers (e.g. Wade and Prider, 1940), however, did comment on certain similarities between lamproites and kimberlites and, hence, inferred a potential for lamproites to carry diamonds.The term lamproite was introduced by Niggli (1923) for leucite-bearing rocks from southeast Spain and Wyoming which had some unusual geochemical characteristics. Wade and Prider (1940) used the term lamproite (as defined by Troger, 1935) to embrace rock types found in the West Kimberley area of Western Australia. All the lamproites described by Wade and Prider (1940) form distinct topographic features. Subsequently in the late 1970s, additional pipes, which have little or no relief, were discovered in the same area, but only as the result of a major diamond exploration program (Atkinson et al., 1984; Jaques et al., 1984, 1986). Some of these bodies are diamondiferous. In 1979, the Argyle pipe was discovered in the East Kimberley area which, in terms of grade, is the richest known primary diamond deposit in the world with some parts of the body having grades greater than 500 carats/100 tonnes (Madigan, 1983; Boxer et al., 1989). All the initial new discoveries in Western Australia resulted from classic stream sampling for ""kimberlite indicator minerals"" (Atkinson, 1989)."
