Several companies have adopted policies and standards aimed explicitly at increasing ‘local procurement’, recognising that local economic participation has benefits for companies and communities alike. From a corporate perspective, local economic participation is seen as one means of maintaining a social license to operate, as well as ensuring reliability of supply by having a supplier located nearby. From a community perspective, the participation of local businesses in the resource project is a means by which the benefits of resource development can flow into their communities. This paper is based on the research undertaken to produce a good practice guide for the mining, oil and gas sector. Our research revealed that the extent to which the local community will actually benefit from local procurement initiatives is dependent on the capacity of the community to supply goods and services to the project and, even more importantly, on its ability to adapt to the inevitable changes that accompany large-scale resource development. We provide guidance on adapting impact assessment tools to guide planning of procurement interventions.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has been recognized by the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) as the most common job-related disease in the United States. Roughly 30 million workers are exposed to excessive noise levels or toxins that are potentially hazardous to their hearing. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR)is investigating noise controls to reduce operator overexposures caused by haul trucks used in underground metal/non-metal mines. To identify the most significant contributors to the overall sound level, Source Path Contribution (SPC) analysis was conducted. Noise dosimetry and time-motion analysis were also conducted to quantify operator noise exposure. SPC analysis determined that, under high idle conditions, a source near a hydraulic pump mounted to the rear of the engine and the engine cooling fan were the major noise sources. The time-motion/dosimetry analysis showed that the operators accumulated more than 90% of their noise exposures while they were hauling ore to the dump site and traveling back to the load site unloaded.

Large amounts of limestone fines coproduced during the processing of crushed limestone may be useful in the sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2). Accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) is proposed as a low-tech method to capture and sequester CO2 from fossil fuel-fired power plants and other point-sources such as cement manufacturing. AWL reactants are readily available, inexpensive, and environmentally benign. Waste CO2 is hydrated with water to produce carbonic acid, which then reacts with and is neutralized by limestone fines, thus converting CO2 gas to dissolved calcium bicarbonate. AWL waste products can be disposed of in the ocean. Feasibility requires access to an inexpensive source of limestone and to seawater, thus limiting AWL facilities within about 10 km of the coastline. The majority of U.S. coastal power generating facilities are within economical transport distance of limestone resources. AWL presents opportunities for collaborative efforts among the crushed stone industry, electrical utilities, cement manufactures, and research scientists.

The use of belt air as an intake source at longwall operations has greatly changed over the past decades. The practical considerations for the use of belt air are controlled by a variety of factors including airflow quantity and velocity, coal methane content, methane desorption rates, coal mining rate, belt length, stopping leakage, and the number of gateroad entries. At longwall operations, the advantages and disadvantages of belt air are different for gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. During gateroad development, the use of belt air to ventilate the working section will reduce the leakage from the intake to the belt compared to the belt air being ventilated outby the working sections because of lower pressure differentials. A greater quantity of airflow will reach the last open crosscut with belt on intake than outby, given the same amount of pressure and airflow available at the mouth of the section. This paper will investigate the current ventilation practices regarding the use of belt air during gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. Operating considerations regarding air quantities and pressures to deliver the required airflow will be investigated using ventilation network modeling.

Microorganisms are directly or indirectly involved in many chemical alterations and in the decomposition of minerals required for their growth. Microbial dissolution of sulfide minerals under acidic conditions can produce over 1,000 times more Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) than chemical action alone. Microbial actions can cause precipitation of minerals, adsorption or release of metals, and formation/destruction of organic-metallic complexes. Soluble minerals can serve as oxidizing substrates, electron donors/acceptors in redox reactions, and can be directly involved in cell metabolism. Microorganisms and microbial oxidation-reduction reactions and their contribution to mineral mobilization and stabilization will be discussed.

Hydraulic separators are commonly used for particle size classification and gravity concentration of minerals and coal. Unfortunately, the efficiency of these processes can be quite low due to poor equipment design and variations in feed consistency. To help alleviate these problems, an industry-driven R&D program has been undertaken to develop a new generation of hydraulic separators that are more efficient and less costly to operate and maintain. Two of the most promising technologies, the CrossFlow and HydroFloat separators, have now been tested at industrial sites. The data obtained from these sites have been used to illustrate the potential performance improvements that can be realized through the application of these high-efficiency separators.

This article advances an innovative concept explaining the connotation and technical system of "green" mining. The important theoretical foundations of "green" mining are the distribution and development characteristics of joints, fractures and bed separations, and the seepage and flow behavior of methane and water in the broken rock strata following coal mining. The main focus of "green" mining technique includes water-preservation in mining areas, coal mining under buildings with bed separation spaces grouted to retard surface subsidence, partial extraction and backfill mining, simultaneous extraction of coal and coal-bed methane, coal roadway supporting and underground disposal of rock waste, underground coal gasification, etc.

Introduction Gold Quarry is one of the largest gold deposits in Nevada, located along the Carlin Trend, approximately seven miles north of Carlin, NV. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, as of December 31, 2005, Gold Quarry had produced over 13 million ounces of gold. Multiple simulations were constructed for gold and metallurgical variables using the Stepwise Conditional Transformation method. Analyses of these simulations have been used for a variety of purposes, including an assessment of uncertainty with various ore types. This assessment provides insight for improved modeling and reconciliation. Geological Framework Gold Quarry is a large, low-grade disseminated gold deposit hosted in Silurian-Devonian aged sediments at the Chukar/Alunite-Good Hope fault intersection. Gold bearing hydrothermal fluids appear to have migrated upwards along the Chukar/Alunite and Deep Sulfide Feeder faults and then moved outward along favorable stratigraphic horizons and structural intersections.

Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers are conquering the world for reason that they are able to solve any severe fouling problem in indirect heat transfer due to the circulation of cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube exchangers. In most cases, these particles consist of chopped metal wire. Moreover, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers perform with excellent heat transfer at very low liquid velocities, which makes completely new designs of shell and tube configurations possible. Further, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers show a strong shear thinning effect in non-Newtonian liquids. All the above characteristics make the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchanger an ideal tool for the indirect heating of laterite nickel slurry in High-Pressure-Acid-Leach (HPAL) plants. Preliminary tests and evaluations of these heat exchangers have shown that the performance and price of these heat exchangers used for the production of nickel and cobalt from a laterite slurry, cannot be matched by existing conventional heat exchange systems. This article explains the principle, design, lay-out and enormous advantages of the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchange technology in a plant suitable for an annual production of approx. 45,000 ton nickel and 4,500 ton cobalt from laterite slurry through high pressure'acid leaching.

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several stages—basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States for 2006 was 3.2 percent. The nominal GDP was about $13.2 trillion. The value of minerals mined in the United States in 2006 rose significantly because of increased unit price for some metals—particularly copper, zinc and other base metals. There was also a significant reduction in metals stocks. Infrastructure expansion and manufacturing in China and India have been absorbing a significant portion of world output. Explosion-resistant seals in underground coal mines isolate the environment within the sealed area from the active workings of the mine. The current United States Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requires these seals to be constructed of solid concrete blocks. The CFR also allows for alternative methods or materials to be used to create a seal if they can withstand a static horizontal pressure of 138 kpa (20 psi), provided the method of installation and the material used is approved in the ventilation plan. The purpose of this report is to identify those explosion- resistant seals that have been tested and meet or exceed all the requirements of the CFR.

The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted a respirable dust survey to evaluate the effectiveness of a water curtain utilized for dust control on continuous miner sections. The purpose of this survey was to determine if the water curtain was effective in reducing respirable dust concentrations, since several mines currently use water curtains to control miners? respirable dust exposures. The survey was conducted on a supersection of an underground coal mine, which utilized two continuous miners on the same split of air. Each continuous miner alternated taking a cut so that both continuous miners would not operate at the same time. The underground coal mine is located in Knox County, Indiana. The water curtain evaluated in this survey was located in the last open crosscut between the intake side continuous miner and the return side continuous miner. When the intake side continuous miner cuts coal, its exhaust air would be used to ventilate the return side of the section. The intent of the water curtain was to reduce the intake air respirable dust concentration (generated by the intake side continuous miner) before the air stream ventilated the return side of the section. To determine the effectiveness of the water curtain in reducing respirable dust concentrations, respirable dust sampling pumps were placed on both the intake side and the return side of the water curtain. Additional respirable dust sampling pumps were placed farther downstream from the water curtain to monitor dust levels downstream of the water curtain, but in an area where respirable dust would not be created by anything other than the intake side continuous miner or additional section air. The water curtain and the respirable dust sampling pumps were operated only when the intake side continuous miner was cutting coal. The samples were analyzed for respirable dust and quartz content. The water curtain showed minimal effect in controlling respirable dust and respirable quartz dust, but the reduction was so negligible that this survey could not quantify the reduction. The measured reductions are within the accuracy of the sampling equipment.

Estimating the residual metal inventory of large heap leaching operations is desirable for many reasons. Several methods have been tried with limited success. Drilling data from the Valley Leach Facility at AngloGold Ashanti's Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine has been used to develop a robust inventory estimation technique. The technique is presented along with discussion of the particular inventory components and evaluation methodologies.

Open pit mines are getting deeper with time and transportation expenses are increasing because of the increasing haulage distance. In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is getting popular in deeper open pit mines as a suitable alternative to truck haulage because it offers a lower operating cost due to shorter haulage distance and less truck requirement. Semi-mobile in-pit crusher, currently the most popular IPCC system, is relocated every two to five years and the short-term plan needs to be updated accordingly. Short-term planning with IPCC is an area of research that has not been explored extensively yet and hardly any model can generate short-term extraction sequence considering an IPCC in place. This research work proposes a mixed integer programming model to generate short-term production plan within a time horizon of 12 months. The objective of the model is to optimally allocate shovels to minimize cost of material handling and maximize revenue subject to meeting plant requirement, maximum allowable tonnage variation and IPCC location constraints to achieve production and NPV targets set by strategic plan. The proposed model has been implemented in a hypothetical case study for verification. The comparison of results between scenarios with and without IPCC is expected to justify the use of IPCC in large open pit mines from a short to medium term perspective. A semi-mobile IPCC system with one relocation is considered in the case study.

INTRODUCTION Gwinnett County, Georgia, is a part of the rapidly expanding metropolitan Atlanta Georgia area. Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Atlanta, Gwinnett County has a current population in excess of 600,000 and is projected to reach a population of 1,200,000 by 2025. As a part of the County’s master plan to supply drinking water for the expanding population and to increase system reliability, the Gwinnett County Public Utilities Department undertook the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project. Figure 1 shows a vicinity map for the project. Prior to construction of the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project the County had a single raw water intake to feed water from Lake Sidney Lanier (Lake Lanier) into a filter plant for processing into potable water. This project together with a newly constructed water filter plant provides Gwinnett County additional capacity and system redundancy to prevent interruptions to the drinking water supply. Lake Lanier is a man made reservoir with over 800 km (500 miles) of shoreline and was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s for hydro electric power generation, flood control, and navigation benefits for the Chattahoochee River. Over time, Lake Lanier has become an increasingly important source of drinking water for the metropolitan Atlanta area. This paper focuses on the primary underground construction and lake tap components of the project including a 42.7 m (140 ft) deep pump station shaft 24.4 m(80 ft) in finished diameter transitioning to a 6.1 m (20 ft) finished diameter shaft, a3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter by 19.8 m (65 ft) deep intake shaft constructed in an average of 21.3 m (70 ft) of water, and a 190.5 m (625 ft) by 3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter modified horseshoe tunnel connecting the two shafts. This raw water intake system, in conjunction with the incorporated pump station with 8 pumps and dual1,829 mm (72 inch) pipelines, provides a system capacity of 1,091,062 m3/day(240 MGD) to two water filter plants and is expandable by the addition of pumps to1,500,210 m3/day (330 MGD). Parsons provided design and construction management services for the project. The $29.6 million contract to construct the project was awarded to W.L. Hailey &Company. Notice to proceed was given August 6, 2001 and substantial completion was achieved on January 20, 2004. Value engineering changes adopted for the project contributed to completing the project at a final cost of $28.8 million.

Vertical hoisting of materials using hoists and skips is common in the Mining Industry. These systems have a number of drawbacks, one being limited hoisting capacity at medium depths. FKC-Lake Shore and Metso Flexowell have been developing and installing vertical belts for medium depth shaft applications for many years, progressively going deeper whilst increasing belt capacity. The latest development from Metso the Pocketlift® belt advances this technology allowing higher tonnages to be lifted from greater depths. The design, manufacture, installation and operational experience of a 1818 tonnes capacity, 273 meters vertical lift Pocketlift® system at the White County Coal Pattiki 2 mine is the subject of this work.

Over the last years, the importance of the assessment of environmental and social aspects as well as of issues of good governance has increased significantly in mining finance. For this, international standards as well as internal guidelines of the banks and other involved institutions have been established and continuously improved. Considering these standards and regulations, the banks can influence the sustainability of mining projects - and they have done so in the past -, mainly by implementing certain provisions and covenants in the loan documentation, binding the financing to the mining company’s adherence to the agreed sustainability standards. However, there are limits to the banks’ influence due to the competitive environment with other available means of financing. Nevertheless, the experience of the last years has shown that the standards and regulations bound to the financing by the banks help to lead the mining industry towards more sustainable projects.

As a factory-like method, sublevel caving consists of development activities, stockpiling and production activities that are carried out on different levels independently. Therefore, considering the operation from the development phase to the plant will lead to more reliable production scheduling. This paper presents a mixed integer linear programming framework for the long-term production scheduling of sublevel caving that maximizes the net present value while satisfying development activities, mining, and processing capacities, continuous mining, the allowable number of active mining units, grade blending, and vertical and horizontal sequencing. The model is coded in Jupyter Notebook and is solved using the CPLEX solver.

Minerales Monclova S.A. de C.V. (MIMOSA) has applied different methane gas drainage technologies, according to the top industry requirements in order to keep the methane gas at the lowest possible concentration in our operations, both in the development sections and longwall sections. Our staff has used the horizontal rotary technique. In 2004 MIMOSA bought a re-built drill machine and signed a contract with Resource Enterprises Inc. (REI), which included a training program in Horizontal Directional Drilling using the reflex system. The training system was developed for a period of three months in Mine VII, with very good performance by the MIMOSA staff. After the training the equipment was moved to Esmeralda Mine, where we had already drilled holes at the development section, 2,500 ft. It was the longest distance that could be reached with our original equipment, obviously; the directional drilling program is another challenge for us and our staff, but we are very confident that our result will be better every time. We will be evaluating each borehole and expect to improve our results in each progressive borehole, until we can drill up to the capacity of the equipment. We are in the process of buying another drill with an electronic monitoring device (DD DMecca) in the following months.
