The purpose of the given research was to investigate the possibility of high-carbon ferrochromium refining to remove harmful impurities as a result of metal treatment by slag mixtures on the basis of the CaO-MgO-SiO2system. The final conclusions were drawn from experimental results. It was shown that the treatment of high-carbon ferrochromium by SiO2-MgO-CaO slag mixtures with additions of chromium sinter or iron-ore concentrate removes carbon, sulphur and phosphorus from the metal. A mechanism of phosphorus removal from a melt to a gas phase is proposed.

Falls of Ground is one of the highest causes of incidents, accidents and fatal injuries in our mines today. These falls of ground may occur as soon as the face is exposed after blasting or after machine cutting. The falls of ground can also occur after support has been installed. There are many reasons why these falls occur before and after supporting of the face. It is therefore important to support the exposed face as soon as possible to prevent the falls of ground. It is also very important to support the face with the correct support products and to support the face as designed and required by the mining engineers. The possible reasons for falls of ground, possible support methods and the products available will be discussed in this presentation. In typical conventional narrow vein stoping operations, the use of conventional temporary support components to offer some support to workers, whilst the permanent and generally more elaborate support system gets installed or constructed, still results in injuries to people. Dimension stone mining is Increasing because of growing demand from the building and construction industries. Diamond wire saw cutting is a popular dimension stone mining technique around the world. Estimation of the production cost for this method is critical for these operations. n this research a production cost model was developed for the mining of granite using a diamond wire saw. Cost and production data were collected from a granitic dolerite operation in Pakistan for a 4.5-year period, and analysed to identify the cost components. Fuel (34%), labour (15%), consumables (40%), and maintenance (5%) were found to be the four major cost components in this operation. A regression-based dimension stone production cost model incorporating statistically significant variables was developed. The data presented a strong correlation of production cost with fuel, labour, and consumables costs. Finally, a production cost model based on the consumption cost of diamond wire is presented. The model was verified using actual production cost data, which indicated 95% (R2 = 0.95) variance in the data between the predicted and actual production cost values. The model may help field engineers in computing their dimension stone operational cost during the cutting phase.

In this paper, four cyanide-utilising bacteria strains were isolated from a gold mine tailings pond, in the Hexi gold mine (Shandong), China. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, four strains were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila strain C1, Bacillus mojavensis strain C3, Shewanella oneidensis strain C2, and Aeromonas media strain C4. Based on the cyanide detoxification efficiencies results of the four strains, Bacillus mojavensis C3 had the highest detoxification rate and was selected to assess its efficiency to detoxify cyanide in gold mine tailings at different pH (9.5, 10.5, and 11.6) using cyanide as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources. Strain C3 was capable of detoxifying 46.5mg/L of cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at all tested pH ranges at 30oC, 196 rpm after 15 d. The amounts of cyanide detoxified were 87.5%, 84.1%, and 73.5% at initial pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest cyanide detoxification was observed at pH 9.5. The viable cells growths in the samples were 5.7E+09CFU/mL, 4.9E+09CFU/mL, and 2.7E+09CFU/mL at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. Free ammonia concentrations were observed as a byproduct of the biodetoxification process. The residual ammonia concentration in the sample was observed at 0.35 mg/L, 0.33 mg/L, and 0.62 mg/L at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest residual ammonia concentration was noticed at pH 11.6. The amount of cyanide removed by mixed culture strains C3 and C4 was 94.6% and showed a residual free ammonia concentration of 2.6mg/L, as biodetoxification byproduct after 120 h. The pure culture Bacillus mojavensis strain C3 and its mixed culture strains exhibited higher potential to detoxify cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at alkaline pH values and could be cultivated to detoxify gold mine effluents at large-scale. In most cases, slope movement monitoring data are collected on a temporal basis and displacement or velocity is plotted against time in order to assist the engineer to make judgements about slope behaviour. Once an unusual behaviour pattern has been established, the data are then analysed to estimate when the key inflection points occur in the data, when the slope movements start to accelerate and, ultimately, when the slope is expected to collapse. The identification of these inflection points is sometimes difficult to achieve with the naked eye. This paper presents the application of a trend analysis technique, known as cusums, to assist in this process. The authors have presented a range of data from various real life examples which highlight the effectiveness of the cusums technique. A key aspect of the cusums technique is the use of a constant (K) against which data trends are assessed. This constant is best derived from slope performance data at each site, as each rock mass will behave in its own unique way. The authors have experienced slopes that have had threshold values ranging from 0.1mm/day through to 10mm/day, and therefore a conservative approach should be adopted when assessing the performance of slopes.

Viscosities of quasi-ternary CaO-SiO2-CrOxmelts in contact with metallic chromium were measured by the rotating cylinder method up to 1750ºC. Twelve slag compositions were selected in the composition range 20–55 wt% SiO2, 10–45 wt% CaO and 10–60 wt% CrOx. Estimation of the amounts of CrO and Cr2O3was made by regression analysis based on the earlier data. Professor Iida’s (Osaka University) viscosity model was applied and model parameters (0CrO,CrOand Cr2O3) were evaluated. The Iida model gave good consistency with the measured viscosity values.

The DEEPMINE Collaborative Research Programme was established to create the technological and human resources platform that would make it possible to mine gold safely and profitably at depths of 3 to 5 km. The DEEPMINE Programme has four goals: to acquire knowledge of and develop appropriate technology for new ultra-deep level mines, to stimulate education and training, to establish a culture of innovation, and to encourage rapid technology transfer and implementation. The research programme was launched in July1998 and will be completed in March 2002, with the final year focusing on the transfer of knowledge to the industrial partners. DEEPMINE represents a new model for conducting mining research: it is driven by industry needs; emphasizes collaboration between industrial partners, research organizations and tertiary education institutions; and has a novel joint-funding mechanism. DEEPMINE has employed a range of vehicles to transfer knowledge to its industrial partners. Novel aspects include: (a) electronic publication of Summary Reports and Guideline Handbooks that seek to consolidate the huge body of knowledge comprehensively and concisely, (b) a series of DEEPMINE Schools designed to enable industry practitioners to apply the knowledge to their current work situation, and (c) Consultancy Reviews, where DEEPMINE specialists seek to apply knowledge to specific real problems on mines.

This manuscript focuses on the design and development of steels for the railroad industry and methods of testing them. Here are summarized the results of research focusing on alloy development and design, with particular focus on advanced rails and wheels. The high-performance steels are characterized for their mechanical and service characteristics. The relationship between properties and cleanliness is discussed and compared to the regular railroad steel. Some of the tests presented are standard tests that are complemented with the nonstandard test recommended by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and recommended modifications of this. The paper presents the results of metallurgical analysis, mechanical, and residual stress tests. The laboratory methods include microstructure, residual stresses, tensile, hardness, fracture toughness, and microcleanliness tests.

Experimental studies on viscosity of titanium bearing slags have been reviewed and the assessed data were used in extending the capability of the structurally related viscosity model for silicate melts, developed by the present authors. Experimental data on ternary and higher order systems containing CaO, MgO, MnO, FeO, Al2O3, TiO2, Ti2O3, SiO2were assessed and used. The newly extended viscosity model represented the viscosity behaviour over broad temperature and composition ranges. The structural role played by TiO2and Ti2O3in silicate network structure is discussed with respect to their effect on viscosity of melts. Monitoring of the slopes of surface mines can prevent loss of life, loss of equipment, loss of production and possibly the loss of the mine. The effectiveness of such monitoring depends on the extent to which slopes give adequate advanced warning before failing, and on the ability of the monitoring system to detect such warning. In this paper an overview is given of slope monitoring requirements, from both the geotechnical and survey points of view, as well as the types of equipment and instrumentation that are available. Legal issues relevant to slope monitoring are also dealt with. It is concluded that conventional geotechnical and survey instrumentation will continue to have their place in slope monitoring. However, the slope monitoring scene has changed substantially in recent years. A real and volume-based monitoring equipment is now available and this has provided, and will continue to provide, the means to improve safety, and to enhance productivity in mining. Its benefit to slope management is substantial. In the near future it is expected that data obtained from such equipment will add a much needed new dimension to slope engineering, and be used to improve slope designs and to optimize slope angles.

In a German governmental funded three-year research project, a closed loop recycling process for Nickel-Metalhydride-Batteries (NiMH) is under development. Today the discarded batteries are used in the steel industry as a cheap nickel source. Cobalt and rare earth (RE) are slagged and lost for reuse. The entire value of the metals in discarded Ni-MH is estimated to be 4?-4.5 ?/kg. Spent NiMH-batteries containing 36?42 per cent Ni, 3?4 per cent Co and 8?10 per cent rare rarth (Ce,La, Pr, Nd). The dismantled and processed NiMH-batteries are melted in a DC electric arc furnace producing a nickel-cobalt alloy and a slag phase highly enriched with RE-oxides. The key to success in this process is to find a suitable slag system, which ensures best separation of NiCo-alloy from the rare earth oxides and high concentration of RE in the slag. Different oxidic and halogenic slag systems are investigated in the melting process. So far a slag system based on 65per cent CaF2 and 35 per cent CaO delivers the best separation of the two phases and metal yields. A slag with a composition of 20?25 per cent La, 13-16 per cent Ce, 1.5?2.5 Pr, 4.5?6.5 per cent Nd is obtained and further treated to misch metal hydro-/electrometallurgically. The first results of the influence of rare earth oxides on the density of CaO-CaF2slag system are shown at 1600°C. "Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in mid-2008, capital has been more difficult to access. Mining projects must contend with projects from other industries for scarce capital. A decision to invest available capital in mineral projects requires that valuation be conducted to assess the expected return on the projects. The discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is generally applied for the valuation of mining projects, whereby future cash flows are discounted to present value using an appropriate discount rate. The discount rate significantly affects the outcome of a valuation. Economic and finance theory provides tools to calculate discount rates. The discount rate must account for factors such as the risk and stage of development of the mineral project; hence the appropriate discount rate to utilize in a project is often a subject of debate.The discount rate is the weighted sum of the cost of debt and equity. There are several methods for determining the cost of equity. This study considers the commonly applied Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model because of their simplicity and availability of parameters required to estimate the cost of equity. This study explores how differences in the cost of equity obtained by these two methods can be explained for a mining environment. Data for empirical analysis were collected from the I-Net Bridge, McGregor BFA, and Bloomberg databases. It was found that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model provides better estimates of the cost of equity compared to the CAPM under depressed market conditions. Therefore, this research recommends that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model be used to estimate the discount rates for mining projects during periods of depressed market conditions."

Merensky Reef is mined extensively within the Bushveld Complex. In previously mined-out areas on the Merensky Reef horizon there are pillars, potholes and remnants that have not been mined. These unmined blocks of ground on the Merensky Reef horizon can influence the mining of the underlying UG2 Reef. The extent of the influence will depend on the size of unmined ground and the middling between the two reef horizons. This paper quantifies the influence of partially extracted Merensky Reef on mining of the UG2 Reef, and aims to provide recommendations for mining strategies, as well as regional and local support to achieve efficient and safe extraction of the UG2 Reef, for various middlings beneath the Merensky Reef horizon. In some cases it was found that relatively shallow UG2 Reef mining could encounter conditions similar to those experienced in deep and ultra-deep mining environments.

In this study, the effects of slag compositions, slag amount, temperature, and carbon content of steel on the manganese and phosphorus distribution ratios during converter steelmaking were analysed using the classical regular solution theory, and industrial tests were performed using two 80 t top-and-bottom combined blown converters (duplex melting process). The results indicate that the slag amount, temperature, and carbon content in steel are the main factors affecting the manganese yield when converter slag compositions remain constant. The FeO content of the slag has a strong impact on the manganese distribution ratio, while the slag basicity and MgO content have no obvious effect. The calculations and experimental results show that the phosphorus distribution ratio increases sharply with increasing slag basicity R, but then decreases with the increase of MgO and MnO contents in the slag. The final slag in converter steelmaking should have the following characteristics: 3.5 < R < 4.5, 15% < (FeO) < 20%, and 6% < (MgO) < 8%. The slag amount should be controlled appropriately at the same time. The results of this investigation would be useful in deciding on the application of manganese ore in alloying and identifying the slagging regime in converter steelmaking.

Effective strata control is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient mining operation. If the strata in the vicinity of an opening are not controlled effectively, it is impossible to perform a safe, efficient and economical operation. In this paper, the reasons and outcome of instability problems observed in roadways opened in clay and marl at the Bolu Colliery of Yeni Çeltek Establishment are investigated. Roadways under examination were located in a syncline causing high residual tectonic stresses. Factors affecting the instability have been studied thoroughly by examining geology and tectonics of the area, establishing convergence measuring stations to understand in situ behaviour of supports and laboratory tests to determine engineering properties of samples taken from nearby convergence measurement stations. As a conclusion, a new production strategy and a new support system are recommended to maintain stability.

The liquidus temperature and viscosity of a range of melter slags produced in South Africa were determined. Drop-quench experiments were carried out on the supplied plant samples to determine the liquidus temperature and phase relations at sub-liquidus temperatures. The temperature measurement range covered 1300°C to 1630°C. Results from these experiments show liquidus temperatures for the melter slags to be in excess of 1500ºC with the chromium containing spinel as the primary crystalline phase. At lower temperatures, an olivine or pyroxene phase co-existed with the spinel phase. The viscosity of the slags was determined over a temperature range of 1350 to 1550°C, under a controlled atmosphere. Results show two orders of magnitude variation in the viscosity (0.2 to 20Pa s) with strong effects of slag chemistry and temperature. Slags with lower SiO2and Cr2O3concentrations were more fluid. Slags with the lowest FeOx and highest SiO2concentrations were the most viscous. These observations are in accord with general behaviour of silicate slags. While the presence of a spinel phase may have an effect on the viscosity of the melter slags, results obtained to date indicate a much stronger effect due to the presence of an olivine or pyroxene phase at lower temperatures. The conditions of a stability of metallurgical films on a surface of solid on the basis of classical regularities of a thermodynamics are considered. For specific conditions of metallurgical processes the basic equations relevant to non-metallic inclusions (product of steel killing) migration and transfer through the interface boundary of metal-slag are obtained. The basic criteria equations of conditions of stability of metallurgical dispersed systems are developed in view of films formation. The probable thermodynamics reason of wetting due to formation of stable films are discussed. The experimental measurement of thin and thick films elastic resistance for metallurgical systems are carried out and the results are discussed. The presence of a wetting thick film increases stability of dispersed systems (facilitates an inverse implication of non-metallic inclusion in a melt) due to a barrier effect of wetting films. The quantitative evaluations of non-metal inclusion stability for steel in contact with any metallurgical slag are carried out. The results are in accordance with technological experience.
