The high final total moisture content of fine coal after mining and processing is one of the major reasons that this resource is not extensively used in subsequent power generation, combustion, or other conversion processes. Some coal products, like export coal, may be subjected to a variety of environmental conditions during transport and storage, such as temperature and humidity. To understand the mechanisms by which moisture is attracted and held on and within fine coal particles, further information is needed regarding the processes occurring at the coal surface. In order to determine the correlation between physical coal properties and its moisture adsorption and desorption characteristics, a series of sorption experiments were conducted on various coal samples under climatically controlled conditions. Equilibrium moisture data was collected while changing the temperature and humidity. This data was correlated to coal properties such as particle size, porosity, maceral composition, and mineral content. All the coals that were studied were medium-rank bituminous coals. It was found that the best predictors for moisture adsorption and desorption were the mineral and inertinite contents. Keywords moisture, adsorption, desorption, fine coal, surface properties.

The Isasmelt process was developed at Mount Isa Mines Limited in Queensland, Australia in collaboration with CSIRO, the Australian Government research organisation. Originally developed for primary lead smelting, culminating in the construction of a 60,000 tonnes per annum lead smelter at Mount Isa, this technology now also provides a major part of the current 200,000 tonnes per annum copper smelting capacity at Mount Isa. A programme is now in place to expand copper production to 250,000 tonnes per annum. The technology has also been applied to secondary lead smelting at Britannia Refined Metals, a MIM subsidiary company, where a 30,000 tonnes per annum lead plant based on battery scrap feed has been operating since 1991. Mount Isa Mines Limited decided to license the technology in1988, and copper smelting plants utilising Isasmelt technology are now operated by Cyprus Miami Mining Corporation in the USA and by Sterlite Industries in India. In addition, the technology was adopted by AGIP for smelting copper/nickel concentrates in Australia. Union Miniere are currently constructing an Isasmelt furnace to smelt and convert copper-containing materials at their plant at Hoboken in Belgium. This paper discusses these developments and also some likely future developments which include the application of the technology for continuous copper and nickel converting and applications in the treatment of zinc-containing residues.

ABSTRACT – This paper investigates the possibility of interpreting the shear band evolution in hard soils and soft rocks as the result of shear propagation from pre-existing natural defects. Thesis done through the application of the principles of Fracture Mechanics, a Slip-Weakening Model(SWM) being used to simulate the non-linear zone at the tips of the discontinuity. Experimental observations have been carried out on prismatic samples of Beaucaire marl through biaxial compression tests in plane strain conditions. A numerical simulation confirms the validity of the proposed approach. RÉSUMÉ – Cet article présente la possibilité d’interpréter l’évolution des bandes de cisaillement dans les roches tendres et les sols raides comme le résultat de la propagation pour cisaillement à partir d’un défaut préexistant. Le Slip-Weakening Model (SWM) a été employé pour modéliser la zone non linéaire a l’extrémité d’une discontinuité. Nous présentons des observations expérimentaux obtenues à travers des essais de compression en déformation plane sur des échantillons prismatiques de marne. La simulation numérique d’un essai confirme la validité de la méthode proposée. KURZFASSUNG – Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht die Ausbreitung von Scherzonen in(bindigen) Böden und im Lockergestein anhand der Entwicklung von Scherrissen ausgehend vonexistierenden Schwachstellen zu erklären. Die Umsetzung erfolgte mit Hilfe der Bruchmechanik,für die Modellierung der nichtlinearen Zone an den Rissenden wurde ein Slip-Weakening-Modell(SWM) eingesetzt. Es wurden zweiaxiale Druckversuche an prismatischen Probekörpern vonBeaucaire Mergel unter der Bedingung eines ebenen Verzerrungszustandes durchgeführt. Dienumerische Untersuchungen bestätigten die Annahmen der untersuchten Theorie.

Mr Colin M. Spence took office as President of The Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers on 1st July, 1984. Colin Maynard Spence was born in November 1921, and was educated at the Durban Preparatory and High Schools, in both of which he was a Dux Scholar. He graduated from the University of Natal in 1942 with a B.Sc. degree in civil engineering. In 1958 he received a Diploma in Town Planning from the same university. Zincor operates four Lurgi fluidised-bed roasters at its roast-leach-electrowin refinery in Springs, South Africa. In 2006, Zincor?s four roasters had reached ages ranging between 26 and 38 years, while the expected life of this type of roaster is generally 20 to 25 years. Based on its condition, Roaster 3 was the first to be rebuilt in 2006. Roaster 4 is being rebuilt in 2007 and the last two roasters will be rebuilt over the next few years as necessary. The main damage to Roaster 3 was caused by buckling of the roaster steel shell. This caused the freeboard and dome areas to shift, resulting in cracks in the dome brick lining and crumbling of the bricks lining the freeboard. The steel shell buckled due to the combined effects of too-high operating temperatures and corrosion caused by the following two main factors: ? Thicker external insulation was installed during a previous maintenance shut which resulted in and increased steel shell temperature and exacerbated the normal metal fatigue; ? SO2/SO3 containing gas that had permeated through the brick lining, passed through its dew point during frequent planned and unplanned shuts over the life of the roaster. This caused acid formation between the refractory brick lining and steel shell, resulting in corrosion of the shell. The initial plan was to replace only the damaged areas of Roaster 3, but upon dismantling more damage was found and the roaster was rebuilt from the tuyeres upwards. During the rebuild, the opportunity was taken to modify the design of some of the brickwork to extend its life and make future repairs easier. This paper discusses the mode of failure of Roaster 3 and the lessons learnt during its dismantling and rebuilding.

In general, overall experience has shown that the approach to the appointment of a project manager is given much attention, but little specific attention is given first to the risk associated with the project conceptual design and its overall executability within either the new legislative framework or the sustainability of the outcome. The risk in project executability and sustainability within the ?new age? legislative framework of the Mining Charter, etc, is itself however, of far greater importance. The degree of importance being defined by the intended projects impact on the business going forward. This is particularly the case where the intention of the implementation is effectively to turn around or even enhance a loss-making strategic investment like a mine or process plant operation in an ?old-order rights? or Brownfield?s operation. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of a ?pre-project project? (PPP) to mitigate the risk in the ?new age?, with specific reference to operational due diligence (ODD) and project conceptual design.

This paper addresses the impact of the variable speed drive on the particle size distribution in the product of a fully autogenous UG2 grinding circuit. It further discusses the impact of a varying particle size distribution in the product of the mill on the downstream classification and milling circuits. An industrial case study was used and data is presented to illustrate the techniques applied to identify the root cause of the shift in operational efficiency. The results achieved from both the investigation into the shift in plant efficiency and the sub-sequent corrective action taken illustrate that the root-cause methodology used in advance control can be effectively applied on production sites to both detect the shift and identify probable root-causes. The industrial example used confirms that the variable speed drive in a UG2 autogenous milling operation is a critical control parameter to ensure that the plant operates to design specifications.

Extensive field studies have been carried out to investigate the pillar fire problems in one coal mine in India. A Thermal IR gun and a Thermovision camera have been employed for thermal scanning to assess the state of heating in selected pillars. Special sampling set-ups have been designed to collect gas samples from the holes drilled into the selected pillars and the multigas detector is used to analyse the composition of samples in situ. In order to predict the spontaneous heating in coal pillars, different gas ratios have been calculated and it has been observed that some of the established gas ratios, viz. Graham?s ratio, Young?s ratio etc. have resulted in negative values in samples containing high amounts of methane. The modified gas ratios have been proposed which will be useful for predicting the pillar fires. These ratios may also be used for assessing the condition of fires in sealed-off areas.

The viscosities of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-FeO slags were measured under conditions ofCaO/SiO2=1.15–1.6, 10–13 percent Al2O3, 5–10 percent MgO and 5–20 percent FeO. Slag viscosity decreased with increasing FeO content at a fixed basicity (CaO/SiO2) of slag. Slag viscosity at low FeO (<7.5 percent FeO) exhibited a minimum value by increasing MgO content in slag. Viscosity decreased with increasing slag basicity up to 1.3 while it increased as slag basicity increased from 1.3 to 1.5. Thus, it was proposed that the driving force for the decreases of slag viscosity would be an increase in depolymerization of silicate network at C/S=1.3, while the viscous behaviour at C/S>1.3 would be increased with increasing the chemical potential of primary solid phase e.g. dicalcium silicate. A thermodynamic approach for the activity of primary solid phase in molten slags resulted in a reasonable relationship between viscosity and slag components. Therefore, it was confirmed that slag viscosity in basic slags system (C/S>1.3) could be determined by the chemical potential of dicalcium silicate. The use of coal for power generation is being questioned in many developed countries, as a result of ever-tightening environmental restrictions and concerns about the potential impact of CO2emissions on climate. Coal will continue to be the fuel of choice for new power plants for many developing countries with large percentages of the world?s population, because of its relatively low cost and broad availability. Even in many of the developed countries that are under pressure, coal will continue to fuel large percentages of power due to the installed base. Using coal efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner will be a challenge for technology and politics in this new century, with the politics played out on the world stage. Coal use will vary in the next few decades, including short-term changes such as the use of more diverse coals and the increased use of efficient ultra-supercritical boilers to longer term ?refining? of coal to produce a range of energy and chemical outputs. This paper outlines EPRI?s Global Coal Initiative aimed at needed developments and demonstrations that support the long-term vision of environmentally sound and economical coal use for power generation, and discusses some of the forces that are driving this development effort.

The essence of the method consists in creation of drop of opposite sign at the isolating stoppings, by which air losses through the accident district change direction of their motion. The period of reversal is selected in that way so that air may not find itself in the zone of burning. The method of fighting the fire considered was repeatedly used in the coal mines of the Ukraine. The theoretical basis of efficiency and two examples of use of this method by fighting the underground fires are adduced in the paper.

A leaching model for gold ore that takes into account the impact of cyanide and oxygen concentrations as well as gold surface exposure on leaching performance is developed. Cyanide consumption is estimated by an empirical model that is a function of ore particles size distribution as well as cyanide, copper and sulphur concentrations. The proposed model has been validated by data from laboratory leaching tests on the Sleeping Giant gold mine ore. Keywords: gold leaching, modelling, exposure surface.

This paper presents an initial investigation into the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts in a two dimensional, thin reef scenario. Deposits with gradational mineralized zones, in the perpendicular sense, are not as well served by the use of reef accumulation and thickness as deposits characterized by a sharp distinction between ore and waste rock. South African Bushveld Complex platinum deposits and Witwatersrand gold deposits are examples of this distinction. The calculation of an optimal mining cut is of paramount importance in the mining of Bushveld platinum. Two-dimensional kriging of a constant stoping width mining cut is an effective method for resource calculations once a cut is decided, but this begs the question of how to decide on the cut. Comparison of multiple cuts is used as a way of achieving this decision on many of Anglo Platinum’s operations. Although the kriging of each cut is valid in isolation, occasional negative values occur when incremental grades between overlapping cuts are calculated. Negative incremental grades cannot reflect reality. They are thought to be related to the inability of the method to include the strong continuity in the perpendicular direction demonstrated by the relevant variograms. Co-kriging of related variables has been investigated as a potential means tore impose this inherent order relationship. Various co-kriging options have been investigated. The method has been tested on a real data set from an established platinum operation. One of three types of anomaly has been investigated so far. The results show that co-kriging the mining cut grade as the primary variable, with just one secondary variable, the reef thickness, eliminates most occurrences. Severe anomalies remaining are arguably indicative of population mixing and might be more effectively treated by rezoning the data. Aim—To investigate the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts as a method for resolving anomalies in the estimation of such cuts on Bushveld platinum deposits, with applicability to other thin reef type deposits with a gradational not sharp cut-off between ore and waste in the direction perpendicular to the reef. The Palabora open pit is scheduled to cease operations in 2002. While the ore body continues below the bottom of the final pit shell, the stripping ratio precludes further economic open pit mining. Palabora Mining Company has investigated various means of continuing copper production, and has determined that an underground mine is the best solution. Board approval to commence construction of the mine has been granted and shaft sinking is underway. First production is planned for the year 2000 and full production of 30 000 t/d will be achieved by the end of the year 2002. [ ] Mechanised block caving will be the mining method employed at Palabora. The cave will be initiated by excavating a thin horizontal slice known as the undercut. Removal of the undercut will induce stresses which cause the rockmass overhead to fracture. Fractured rock will gravitate through drawbells to drawpoints on the production level, and be loaded by LHDs for transport to crushers.

Modelling the effect of blasting-caused damage, anisotropy of rock masses and excavation sequence on deformational behaviour and stability of large-scale underground caverns is important in the design and information-oriented construction of the pumped storage power plant. A powerful three-dimensional numerical method that can be applied for that purpose is presented in this paper. Damaged range caused by blasting and mechanical properties of rock masses near to the walls of caverns are determined by using the back analysis approach in which three lines of the measurement results during the arch part excavation process were used to verified the simulations. Finally, applying the improved model and properties of rocks, the cavern stability and reinforcement effect of the preliminarily designed support system are also estimated for the safety in the bench excavation process. La création de modèles des effets relatifs aux dommages résultant des explosions, à l’anisotropie des masses rocheuses et à la séquence d’excavation quant au comportement à la déformation et à la stabilité des cavernes souterraines de grandes dimensions est une étape importante dans l’étude et la construction sur ordinateur de centrales hydrauliques à accumulation par pompage. Cet article traite d’une méthode numérique tri-dimensionnelle puissante applicable à cet effet. La gravité des dommages résultant des explosions et les propriétés mécaniques des roches à proximité des parois de la caverne sont déterminées par une analyse du fond dans laquelle les simulations sont vérifiées à l’aide de trois lignes de résultats de mesures prises durant le processus d’excavation de la partie arche. Finalement, la stabilité de la caverne et les effets du renforcement du système de support préalablement conçu sont estimés par application du modèle amélioré et des propriétés de la roche, pour application à la sécurité durant le processus d’excavation en gradins. Nachahmung der Wirkungen von durch Explosionen hervorgerufenen Schäden, Anisotropie der Gesteinsmassen und der Ausschachtungssequenz auf das Verformungsverhalten und die Stabilität großräumiger Untergrundhöhlen ist für das Design und den informationsorientierten Bau von Pumpenkraftwerken wichtig. Entsprechend der Vorgaben in dieser Arbeit kann ein leistungsfähiges, dreidimensionales numerisches Verfahren für diesen Zweck eingesetzt werden. Der durch Explosionen und die mechanischen Eigenschaften des Gesteins bedingte Schadensumfang im Bereich der Höhlenwände kann mit Hilfe eines retroversen Analyseansatzes bestimmt werden, bei dem die drei bei der Ausschachtung resultierenden Messlinien dazu genutzt wurden, die Simulationen zu bestätigen. Abschließend wurde außerdem durch Einsatz verbesserter Modelle und Gesteinseigenschaften die Auswirkungen vorläufig entworfener Unterstützungssystem auf die Höhlenstabilität und Verstärkungswirkungen hinsichtlich der Sicherheit bei Böschungsausschachtung abgeschätzt.

Gravity separation techniques have been in use in the mineral sands industry for decades; from the Reichert cone to Wilfley tables, Wright sluices and the Kelsey Jig, all attempting that elusive perfect gravity separation. Just as the gravity separation industry evolved, Richards Bay Minerals also evolved in their use and approach to gravity separation. This paper discusses the history of gravity separation at Richards Bay Minerals and briefly comments on future developments. History Primary Concentration Richards Bay Mineral?s (RBM) first mining concentrator and mineral separation plant commenced operation in 1977 to process ilmenite, rutile and zircon bearing dunal deposits along the northern Natal coast. The orebody contained a greater proportion of non-valuable magnetic heavy mineral in the SG range of 3 to 4 compared to West Australian and Florida USA deposits, making mineral separation more difficult(1). The deposit was mined using two dredges feeding a floating 2000 tph concentrator. Concentrator feed was screened and fed to two four-stage circuits consisting of primary, scavenger, cleaner and recleaner Reichert cones [see Figure 1]. The primary units were fed at a rate of 80 tph and a density of 60% solids by weight.

The move away from the use of strike stabilising pillars at depth and the adoption of the more flexible system of mining towards final dip remnant pillars brings new opportunities for optimising mine design. In the initial planning stage, the size and spacing of the final pillars is designed using classical design criteria, through limiting modelled values of Energy Release Rate (ERR), Average Pillar Stress (APS) and Excess Shear Stress (ESS). In reality, mines often leave pillars that are larger than those originally designed. One of the reasons for leaving more ground is an unexpectedly high rate of seismicity. In this paper, we present developments in integration of modelling and seismicity that are aimed at developing design criteria that are more responsive to local conditions.
