In this study, the effects of heat treatment on phase formation and surface morphology of the Cr-Pt coated system are investigated using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. The CrPt andCr4Pt (Cr3Pt - A15 type) phases were formed after heat treatment of the coated samples. Heat treating at 1000°C renders a distinct island coating morphology that is non-continuous in nature. A diffusional model is proposed for this coated system with regards to the surface morphology formation after heat treatment.

INTRODUCTION To prepare the reader adequately, reference should be made to the paper 'The Pioneering of Fully Mechanized Longwall Coal Mining in South Africa' by R. T. Naude and M. J. Deats, published in the February, 1967, edition of the Journal. At the time mechanized longwalling had been proved operationally feasible with encouraging results since its inception in South Africa in mid 1965. Subsequently, further top seam panels were successfully extracted with improved productivity and with some modification to equipment. In 1968, after an overseas visit by mine officials, equipment specific to suit local conditions was acquired and lower seam trials commenced. Despite initial obstacles and difficulties the first panel was successfully mined. Modification and improvements to equipment and techniques resulted in the second lower seam panel being extracted economically during 1969-1970 and with productivity exceeding even that of top seam faces. During extraction of the second lower seam panel, gradual and complete surface subsidence occurred over the panel without affecting face operations. Rock mechanics investigations had originally indicated some uncertainty regarding adverse dolerite sill behaviour which could have caused longwall mining to be hazardous. All such doubts have now been removed. RESUMÉ AS AT FEBRUARY, 1967 Mechanized longwalling was introduced in 1965 on an experimental basis in an effort to improve productivity in the newer area of the mine and to increase the quality of the comparatively dirty run of mine feed to the washing plant. In addition advantages could be predicted in the long term by better utilizing reserves of straight coking coal and increasing the life of the mine. The top seam unit was obtained on a rental basis and by the beginning of 1967, two panels, the first having a face length of 215 m, a panel length of 345 m, seam section of 1 219 mm, and the second the same face length, a panel length of 453 m and a seam section of 1 067 mm had been successfully longwalled. At this stage a best month of 24 602 metric tons with an average of 17 364 metric tons per full working month could be reported. Results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment as its own asset and from 1967 onward, the unit has operated on this basis. From the point of view of rock mechanics, the dolerite sill over the first two panels was known to have 'bridged', only the material below the base of the sill having truly 'goafed'. No adverse pressure effects had significantly affected face operations except for two 'bumps' towards the end of operations in each panel. Gate road maintenance presented no problem. The strong inflows of water experienced on the first face were now known to be associated with an isolated water bearing fault plane and were not experienced on the second face. TOP SEAM EXPERIENCE - MAY, 1966, TO DATE Panel 2 (February, 1966, to November, 1966) The operations in panel 2 (see Fig. 1 for location of panels) continued uneventfully until the final month in this panel. At this stage, the chocks behaved most inconsistently often lowering under the weight of the canopies alone. Roof trouble became so severe that the unit was unable to produce adequately and blasting of chocks became a daily occurrence. Finally 24 m short of the planned limit it was decided that a complete overhaul was the only solution and the extraction operations commenced. At this time, the only fatal accident associated with longwalling occurred when a Non-White inadvertently fell into the panzer conveyor transfer point at the main gate. Some gate road difficulties in this panel were overcome by bolting tapes to the roof as decking and allowing them to pass over the gate chocks and collapse into the goaf. Two cribbed roof falls were also negotiated by the gate chocks at the face ends without undue difficulties. It was decided in the light of maintenance problems encountered on this face that the best solution would be to appoint a foreman solely in charge of face maintenance crews. This step has to a large extent contributed to success achieved subsequently. Panel 2-face length 213 m panel length 456 m cutting height 1 092 mm average monthly output 16 443 t best month 19 130 t Panel 3 (December, 1966, to June, 1967) By the end of 1966 results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment. This was negotiated and the unit has operated as such to the present date. Prior to installation in panel 3, all face equipment was thoroughly overhauled underground and the chocks boost-tested to yield-load. The costs of overhauling, including almost complete hose replacement, were much higher than anticipated. Advice had been received that complete hose replacement was common practice after +/- 18 months' operation. Shortly after commencement of operations in panel 3 the chocks again failed as they had towards the end of panel 2. At this stage, the suppliers advised that the valve gear should have been repaired during the overhaul as the needle and seat seals could no longer be relied upon. This operation was impossible to carry out on the face and would have been e1ttremely time consuming. Fortunately a new type of valve gear was then available from the suppliers, termed the capsule-type valve, and a complete change over could be made on the face. Driven by the necessity to improve blast performance regarding fragment size distribution in limestone mines, this paper introduces the prediction and measurement of blast fragmentation distribution through the modified Kuz-Ram (MKR) and Kuznetsov-Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) models. Precise prediction and measurement of rock fragmentation resulting from blasting play a critical role in hard rock ore extraction. This is due to the substantial influence of post-blast ore size distribution on the efficiency of all subsequent downstream rock handling and processing operations. Additionally, employing secondary breakage of boulders, when necessary, leads to an unjustified rise in production costs. In this paper, the MKR and KCO models were utilised to identify the most appropriate model for application in Bisil and Simba quarries situated in Kajiado County, Kenya. Split-Desktop was used for blast fragment measurement by processing digital images obtained after blasting and computing the fragment size distribution of the blasted rock. As per the investigation, the recorded percentages of boulders generated at the sites ranged from 7% to 12.3% for the Simba quarry and from 11.2% to 23.9% for the Bisil quarry, respectively. Regression, correlation, and root mean square error (RMSE) were employed as the primary performance indicators. The study concluded that KCO outperformed MKR in accurately predicting blast fragment sizes in the examined quarries.

The effects of utilizing recycled tailings pond water from the flotation plant at the Mining Company of Guemassa (MCG) on galena recovery and selectivity towards chalcopyrite (RPb-Cu) , sphalerite (RPb- Zn), and pyrrhotite (RPb-Fe) were studied at bench scale. The results showed that recycling the tailings pond water in the lead circuit without addition of fresh water gave a good flotation performance in terms of lead recovery (Rpb) (75%) and selectivity towards the other metals: RPb-Cu (54%), RPb-Zn (60%) and RPb-Fe(65%). This allows the water to be recycled at least four times. However, increasing the d80 from 100 μm to 160 μm currently used at the MCG plant had a negative effect on the lead flotation performance.

Challenges due to the formation of stable froth in acid leach systems is common at many copper and Ccbalt producers. Stable froth affects downstream process, critical equipment, and operational parameters. In severe cases the froth present safety and environmental risks and increased operational costs. Solids reports in the pregnant leach solution, accumulates, and clogs launders resulting in a potential costly safety and environmental risk. Solvent extraction is operationally affected by crud formation, organic solvent and extractant losses, reduced mass transfer due to the solids carried downstream. This article reviews the generally inadequate mechanical and hydraulic solutions of froth elimination employed over the years. The recent introduction of a chemically based solution able to eliminate froth problems that can potentially turn around the situation for those who adopt the technology.

Tasked with developing a flow sheet for a new resource, one typically turns the experts for help. The advice of an expert can be invaluable in reducing the time and costs associated with characterizing an ore (not to mention extracting maximum information from limited samples). While guiding and optimizing a metallurgical concept study requires a certain skill set, selling a project is something different. The metallurgical specialist is usually not responsible for sharing the results of investigations with potential investors. However, the person responsible for selling the project can ensure that a metallurgical concept study is conducted thoroughly and responsibly without having the ability to do the work, while being sufficiently familiar with the metallurgical aspects to authoritatively sell the project. The process of identifying suitable process routes through to constructing a concept flow sheet and mass balance is discussed as a basic example. From basic mineralogical information and a thorough literature survey, the most likely beneficiation routes can be identified and targeted testing conducted. The final top size will depend on the required product properties (mainly grade), the selected beneficiation technology, and the ore?s liberation properties. Once the required top size has been identified, comminution options can be evaluated. Once again, literature surveys can be used to supplement concept-level comminution property information, and select possible equipment and circuit configurations. Marketing, material handling, and logistics-related information can be used to determine required dewatering technologies. At this stage, enough information is available to develop a concept mass balance and conduct basic equipment sizing..

This paper describes a study of seismic records from the Kiirunavaara mine footwall which were interpreted in relation with numerical models developed outside the study. Seismic data was retrieved from a portion of the mine and filtered with respect to the ratio between energy carried by an event's P (primary) and S (secondary) waves (Es/Ep ratio), local magnitude, and active mining depth. The data was analysed using Es/Ep ratios and Gutenberg-Richter graphs to determine the event origin, mechanisms, and minimum magnitude cut-off. The magnitude completeness was identified by studying the b-value stability and b-value differentiation between origin sets. It was shown that, by separating seismic events into the origin components shear, complex, and tensile based on Es/Ep ratios, a representative value for the magnitude completeness can be identified for a catalogue with a convex cumulative log curve. The majority of the events were shown to be of shear-slip origin based on the recorded Es/Ep ratios, with pure tensile events constituting only about 10% of the recorded data. Spatial and temporal event location patterns were studied and compared with numerical modelling results. The comparison showed a correlation between shear-slip seismic events and volumes experiencing high differential stresses in the lower part of the footwall. In the upper part of the footwall the results did not reveal any clear correlation between observed damage in drifts and seismic event locations. The concentration of seismic events in the lower portion of the footwall is discussed in the context of rock mass displacements. The results indicate a possible connection between mine seismicity at depth and damage observations in the drifts in higher non-seismic areas by seismic softening and subsequent lateral expansion of the rock mass.

"Mineral reserve statements as well as optimizing mine planning require a block model with grades for each mining block. A cut-off grade is determined by considering the mining costs as well as the expected revenue for each block. These grades are estimated using various techniques, but in reality there is uncertainty in the grade values. These uncertainties result in two types of error. A type I error is where material is classified as ore and mined, but the true value is below the cut-off grade and the material is therefore waste. This material constitutes dilution. The type II error is where material is estimated to be below the cut-off grade and is classified as waste, whereas the true grade is actually above the cut-off grade. This material is not mined and the value is lost.This research considers the value of the lost ore and the costs of dilution under various degrees of uncertainty. Simulation using @Risk and mixed integer linear programing (Excel Solver) is used in a financial optimizer model to maximize either profit or net present value. This is applied to four Witwatersrand tabular gold deposits to investigate the impact of block grade uncertainty on cut-off grades.When optimizing for profit, value may be added by adjusting the cutoff grade slightly downwards. When optimizing for NPV, value may be added by lowering the cut-off grade significantly for the lower discounting rates. At higher discount rates, the lowering of the cut-off grades should be reduced, and in some cases an increase in cut-off grade may be required. Each mine reacted differently to the optimization and thus there is no single rule that can be applied across all tabular Witwatersrand gold deposits."

An often-overlooked parameter of flotation processing is the impact of surface chemistry. Flotation processing, being a heterogenous process is largely reliant upon the chemistry occurring at the interfaces between solid-liquid phases. Development of analytical techniques such as Auger electron spectroscopy, X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and low energy electron diffractions (LEEDS) has allowed for a dynamic view characterizing surface composition and structures. The advent of ‘static’ systems, capable of measuring ultra-thin layers on surfaces at low concentrations, was the next step in surface analytical developments. In general, it is the low concentrations and fragmentation patterns which limit the analysis of certain chemical species at plant concentration ranges. At present, analysis of inorganic and organic surface modifiers by time of flight mass spectrometers with a variety of ionization techniques has become a common analytical method to measure chemical species on the outermost surface of mineral particles. By studying the relationship between surface analysis results with metallurgical outcomes, the implications of the presence of surface species can be determined. The presence of flotation activators or depressants can be established using Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometry (LIMS) and Resonant Ionization Mass Spectrometry (RIMS) which are highly versatile surface sensitive analytical techniques. A case study applied to sphalerite flotation in the Neves Corvo Cu-Pb-Zn concentrator and the implication inorganic surface modifiers have is presented. By determining the relative concentrations of Cu, Pb, oxidation products, Ca and other surface species in floated and rejected mineral particles, rationale for improving recovery and selectivity is elucidated. In August 1965, the late Mr Alan Smith, then Mill Superintendent at Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (GMK), Australia, asked me to investigate the planting of vegetation on the GMK slimes dams in order to ease the dust problem in urban and industrial areas-a problem that is caused largely by dust from these barren slimes dams. My early sources of information were the comprehensive papers in various issues of the Journal of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. However, the climate of Johannesburg differs from that of Kalgoorlie. The average Johannesburg rainfall, which falls mostly in summer, is 730 mm, and the average maximum summer temperature is 26°C (top 34°C). The winters are cool, the average maximum being 18°C (low -7°C). Kalgoorlie, on the other hand, receives, on average, 257 mm of sporadic rainfall, has hot dry summers with an average maximum of 35°C (top 45°C), and cool winters with an average maximum of 18°C (low -2°C). My obvious choice was to look at established trees growing on the GMK lease. A number of Athel pines were growing vigorously adjacent to the Oroya mining and geology offices and also on a nearby sand dump. The Athel pine (Tamarix aphylla), which is native to North Africa, Asia, and India, was originally introduced into Australia in 1936 by Mr Essington Lewis, then manager of BHP. His cuttings were planted in Whyalla, where some difficulty had been experienced in finding trees and shrubs that would flourish despite the district's low rainfall. In August 1965, cuttings of approximately 20 cm length and 1 cm diameter were taken from the GMK trees, stripped of leaves, and placed in jars of water in the sun. When the cuttings had sprouted both leaves and roots, they were planted in local soil in tins (about 20 cm high and 10 cm in diameter), and watered daily. In October 1965, when the new shoots were about 8 cm long, the trees were transplanted onto a lower flat section¬approximately 30 m wide, 30 m long, and 2 m high-of the Trafalgar slimes dam. No additional soil or fertilizer was used, and the trees were planted in their tins, the bases of which had been removed (the tin would eventually rust away). A few common varieties of non-prickly cactus and two native salt bush (spp Atriplex) were also planted, but did not survive, probably because of the acidity of the slime. During the summer of 1965/1966, Kalgoorlie's rainfall was 88 per cent above the average, and this probably helped the trees to survive. The moisture content was usually about 2,5 per cent from about 10 cm below the surface, and the pH value of the slime (d80 approximately 75 µm) was about 6. The trees were watered twice a week for the first four months and then left untended. By 1974 they had grown to only about 0,7 m, which indicated that their growth in slime was very slow. Other Athel pines were planted on the wall of the dam, but did not survive beyond 1974, probably because of the steep (about 500) slope and the hardness of the walls, which were initially formed by hand-shovelling of the slime as the height of the dam was raised. Five of the six Athel pines planted in 1965, which probably reached maturity (approximately 5 m in height) in 1981-16 years after being planted-have survived. In the early 1980s, waste rock had to be dumped on the dam, but the management of KMA (now KCGM) took care to ensure that the trees were not buried. Trials are being conducted on other tailings dams so that the performance of cuttings taken from the trees on Trafalgar dam can be compared with that of cuttings taken at various sites in Western Australia. It might also be worth while for an attempt to be made to strike cuttings from Trafalgar dam in pots containing different mixtures of soil and slime.

"SynopsisThe aim of a blending stockpile is to minimize the natural variation in properties of a material. Two simulation models were written, for coneshell and chevcon stacking, and used to investigate the influence of different stockpile parameters on blending efficiency. The coneshell model is used to show that blending efficiency is highly sensitive to stacked height, with lower output variances observed for higher capacities. Output variance in both models also decreased when the stacker movement increment was decreased. For chevcon stacking, increasing stacker speed significantly increases the blending efficiencies. Increasing the length of the blending tail also reduces output variation, but this parameter would need to be weighed against the accompanying decrease in buffer capacity.IntroductionEven in the most uniform deposit of materials in nature, material properties will vary. The degree of variation can be measured, and usually resembles a normal distribution. The aim of blending and homogenization operations is to minimize the standard deviation of this normal distribution (De Wet, 1994). In general, the reduction in variation will result in a more efficient and cost-effective downstream process. Cement plants need a precise blend of raw materials to ensure desired kiln performance; boilers used in power generation are optimized for fuels of a constant specification; and even though the separation density in a coal washing plant can be adjusted, a constant product quality cannot be produced from highly variable feed (Denny and Harper, 1962). "Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was applied to predict the average gas holdup and the axial gas holdup variation in a 13.5 m high cylindrical column 0.91 m diameter. The column was operating in batch mode. A Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase approach with appropriate interphase momentum exchange terms was applied to simulate the gas-liquid flow inside the column. Turbulence in the continuous phase was modelled using the k-_ realizable turbulence model. The predicted average gas holdup values were in good agreement with experimental data. The axial gas holdup prediction was generally good for the middle and top parts of the column, but was over-predicted for the bottom part of the column. Bubble velocity profiles were observed in which the axial velocity of the air bubbles decreased with height in the column. This may be related to the upward increase in gas holdup in the column. Simulations were also conducted to compare the gas holdup predicted with the universal, the Schiller-Naumann, and the Morsi-Alexander drag models. The gas holdup predictions for the three drag models were not significantly different. IntroductionColumn flotation is an important concentration technology that is used in the mineral processing and coal beneficiation industries. The growing interest in the use of column flotation in mineral processing has been attributed to the simpler flotation circuits and improved metallurgical performance compared to conventional flotation cells (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Flotation columns have also found other applications outside mineral processing, such as de-inking of recycled paper (Finch and Hardie, 1999).In column flotation, a rising swarm of air bubbles generated by means of air spargers is employed to collect the valuable mineral particles and separate them from the gangue minerals in a countercurrent process. Wash water, which is continuously fed at the top of the column, is used to eliminate entrained particles and stabilize the froth. The column volume can be divided into two sections – the collection zone in which the bubbles collect the floatable mineral particles, and the cleaning zone (or froth zone) where product upgrading is enhanced through the removal of unwanted particles entrained in the water mixed with bubbles from the collection zone."

Reinforcement and surface support are part of an integrated system that transfers and shares loaduntil the excavation surface is stabilized or until the ground support system fails. Steel mesh is the most popular primary surface support element in underground hard rock mines in Canada. Mesh straps are a secondary surface support that provide additional containment as they distribute the load between and across the reinforcement elements. This investigation addresses the role of steel properties, and in particular steel chemistry, in the long-term performance of mesh and mesh straps when exposed to an aggressive corrosive environment. It reports on comparative accelerated corrosion studies to compare the resistance to corrosion of different surface support elements. This has significant implications on the choice of surface support and the anticipated rehabilitation requirements.

"Flotation columns are normally operated at optimal superficial gas velocities to maintain bubbly flow conditions. However, with increasing superficial gas velocity, loss of bubbly flow may occur with adverse effects on column performance. It is therefore important to identify the maximum superficial gas velocity above which loss of bubbly flow occurs. The maximum superficial gas velocity is usually obtained from a gas holdup versus superficial gas velocity plot in which the linear portion of the graph represents bubbly flow while deviation from the linear relationship indicates a change from the bubbly flow to the churn-turbulent regime. However, this method is difficult to use when the transition from bubbly flow to churn-turbulent flow is gradual, as happens in the presence of frothers. We present two alternative methods in which the flow regime in the column is distinguished by means of radial gas holdup profiles and gas holdup versus time graphs obtained from CFD simulations. Bubbly flow was characterized by saddle-shaped profiles with three distinct peaks, or saddle-shaped profiles with two near-wall peaks and a central minimum, or flat profiles with intermediate features between saddle and parabolic gas holdup profiles. The transition regime was gradual and characterized by flat to parabolic gas holdup profiles that become steeper with increasing superficial gas velocity. The churn-turbulent flow was distinguished by steep parabolic radial gas holdup profiles. Gas holdup versus time graphs were also used to define flow regimes with a constant gas holdup indicating bubbly flow, while wide gas holdup variations indicate churn-turbulent flow. IntroductionTwo types of flow can be distinguished in gasliquid flows in bubble columns: bubbly flow and churn-turbulent flow. The bubbly flow regime is characterized by uniform flow of bubbles of uniform size. Churn-turbulent flow, on the other hand, is characterized by a wide variation in bubble sizes with large bubbles rising rapidly and causing liquid circulation.Flotation columns are normally operated in the bubbly flow regime, which is the optimal condition for column flotation (Finch and Dobby, 1990; Yianatos and Finch, 1990; Ityokumbul, 1992). However, it has been generally observed that flotation column performance deteriorates when the superficial gas velocity is increased beyond a certain limit where the flow regime changes from bubbly flow to churn-turbulent flow (Xu, Finch, and Uribe-Salas, 1991). The identification of this critical or maximum superficial gas velocity is therefore important for optimal operation of flotation columns."

Assessment of blast fragment size distribution is critical in mining operations because it is the initial step towards mineral extraction. Different empirical models and techniques are available for predicting and investigating the consequences of blasting, one of which is the Kuznetsov Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) model. In this paper we summarize the advances in the empirical models from inception until now, and explore the improvements that have been made so far with particular emphasis is on the most recent KCO model. Utilization of the model and the errors that arise between expected and the actual outcomes are analysed. The results indicate that the KCO model remains useful for predicting the blast fragmentation at limestone mine sites, despite the availability of other advanced prediction models. It is also a valuable instrument for pre-surveying the impact of varying certain parameters of a blast plan.

A copper-gold project has required a number of trade-off studies underpinned by test work to settle on pragmatic flowsheets and throughputs to support a pre-feasibility study that provides a compelling financial case. The primary trade-off studies were based on the mine schedule, ore type feed-grade recovery relationships, likely concentrate grades and typical marketing terms as well as the estimated capital and operating costs for a range of throughputs and mining strategies. Secondary trade-off studies were conducted for specific circuits and additional processing options. Although the details of these studies are not presented, the technical options and subsequent flowsheets are discussed. While the flowsheets will be optimised during the feasibility study stage, the basis is now fixed for the four ore types that would be mined from the copper-gold orebody. The ore types, resulting from a strong weathering profile, exhibit a wide range of copper mineralisation and gold associations, as well as gangue types. They display a range of characteristics that necessitated a nuanced approach to flowsheet development. The primary separation techniques that have been employed include gravity, classification, flotation and leaching while a range of comminution methods have been selected to suit the properties of the ore types. While technical issues are important factors in terms of maximising the quality of separations, recoveries and revenues, attention to material handling, equipment characteristics, the mine schedule, and capital and operating costs are equally important considerations for settling upon a suitable and robust flowsheet.
