A complete service system was established for the monitoring of personnel exposure to N02 based upon the use of passive dosimetry. This system is structured such that minimum effort is required of the user: manufacturing, analysis, reporting, and record keeping functions are provided by the service organization. A field evaluation program was carried out in a dieselized mine to assess the performance of two passive dosimeters, the Walden GASBADGE TM dosimeter, and a tubular dosimeter developed at New York University. Side-by-side comparisons were carried out to evaluate dosimeter suitability for monitoring in the field, and to assess relative accuracy characteristics.

Phase relations of gadolinium alloyed, up to 40 weight-percent (wt pct), with AISI 304-type stainless steel were established. Body-and face-centered cubic iron-rich solid solution phases and several intermetallic gadolinium-containing compounds of variable composition that approximated the formulas Fe9Gd, Ni7Gd2, Ni3Gd, Fe2Gd, NiGd, and NiGd3 were identified. The intermetallic phases Fe9Gd and Ni7Gd2 were noted to melt at about 1,080° C at about 0 to 2 wt pct gadolinium. The melting temperature of Fe9Gd increased with increas-ing gadolinium content to a plateau at about 1,230°C and 30 wt pct gadolinium, and the melting point of Ni7Gd2 decreased to a plateau at 900° C and 30 wt pct gadolinium where Ni3Gd, NiGd, and Fe2Gd coexist. Body-centered cubic iron solid solution was stable from 1 to 2 wt pct gadolinium to higher contents, 30 wt pct gadolinium or possibly more, and face-centered cubic iron up to 12 wt pct gadolinium below 1,200° C. The stability of these phases above 1,200° C was not resolved except for the mel points. A limited number of fabrication variables as well as mechanical and corrosion properties of alloys containing up to 5 wt pct gadolinium were studied. Equilibrating and forming operations were best conducted at about 940° to 1,080° C. Some variability in the yield and tensile strengths of alloys was noted; however, there was a continual decrease in ductility and impact resistance with increasing gadolinium contents. The resistance of gadolinium alloys to corrosion in water at 354° C was about the same as stainless steel.

The fourteenth National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest we;; held at the State fairgrounds, Columbus, Ohio, October 2, 3, and 4, 1951. The meet, the first such event in 21 years, was under the auspices of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, and the Joseph A Holmes Safety Association and was sponsored by the National Coal Association, the United Mine Workers of America, and various State mine-inspection departments. The cooperating agencies that contributed to make the meet a success, in addition to the National Coal Association and the United Mine Workers of America, were the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals, Ohio Division of Mines, West Virginia Department of Mines, Pennsylvania Department of Mines, and the Columbus Convention Bureau. SUMMARY Fourteen teams from 6 States participated in the mine rescue contest, and 55 teams from 9 States competed in the first-aid contest. Only one of these teams entered as a combination team, that is, participating in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are listed in table 1.

Quarry accidents in 1963 caused 61 fatal and 3,468 nonfatal injuries which occurred at respective frequency rates of 0.31 and 17.91 per million man-hours of worktime. The fatality record in 1963 was better than in 1962 but was appreciably worse than in 1.961. For nonfatal injuries, the 1963 record was slightly worse than in 1962 but was better than in 1961. The injury--severity rate of 2,913 days lost or charged per million man-hours in 1963 was better than that of 3,046 in 1962, the first year for which such data became available. The average severity of all injuries in 1963 was 160 days lost or charged per injury, 15 less than in 1962. An average of 91,960 men were at work on active days in 1963 and these men had an aggregate worktime of 193.7 million man-hours during the year.

The work presented in this report represents the background activity which led to the fabrication and testing of a greenhorn and crowd limit switch system for electric shovels. The program began With a literature search and manufacturers product review to gather material as a basis for concept generation. Visits to three open pit mines provided information from operation and maintenance managers which was useful in preparing design concepts. These concepts were evaluated through laboratory tests and engineering analysis to select a final design concept. The resultant greenhorn is four separate shock absorbing pads each enclosed in a housing which bolts to the end of a dipper handle adaptor. The plungers impact against stops mounted to the saddle block. The crowd limit control is a nonmechanical device which senses the location of the dipper and makes appropriate commands to the crowd motor to insure against impacting the greenhorns. The electronic crowd limit control is redundant and indicates malfunction modes. The greenhorn prevents shovel damage in the unlikely event of impact.

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays, and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels while using a 12.2 m (40 ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1 m (20 ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complemented the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut as compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

Properties of coal-water slurries were studied in two separate phases: a rheological phase and a pipeline phase. The purpose of the study was to investigate the rheology of fine coal slurries to determine the effect of fine particles in a coal-water mixture on the economic and operational aspects of a slurry pipeline. The slurries consisted of 6x10, 100x200, and 200x0 mesh coal in water. A fourth slurry consisted of a mixture of the 6x10 and 200x0 mesh coal. Brookfield and Stormer rotational viscometers were used to obtain or simulate rheograms for a range of fine coal concentrations, temperatures, and particle sizes. All the slurries were pumped through a 1-inch diameter acrylic pipe. The fine coal slurries were found to encompass four distinct rheological models. The narrow size distribution of the coal slurries was apparently responsible for the high pipewall friction losses, more so than the particle size. A scale-up method applicable to Bingham plastics was found satisfactory for predicting pipeline headlosses of fine coal slurries from rheology data.

"The Bureau of Mines in Serial No. 2606,4 issued in May, 1924, gave tentative specifications for rock-dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines. Subsequently, a sectional committee of the American Engineering Standards Committee was appointed to formulate recommendations for standard practice in rock-dusting coal mines. The report of this Committee which follows was approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee, December 30, 1925. Several members of the Bureau of Mines staff served on this Sectional Committee and its recommendations are essentially in harmony with those of the Tentative Specifications in Serial No. 2606.As certain explanatory details contained in that serial are not included in the recommendations formulated by the American Engineering Standards Committee, it should be considered by coal-mine managements in conjunction with the committee's report which follows:Recommended American Practice for Rock-Dusting Coal Mines to Prevent Coal-Dust Explosions 1. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have investigated seat design issues for the occupants and operators of underground mine transport vehicles relative to whole-body vibration (WBV) and mechanical shock. Considering the ergonomic and engineering improvements made to underground mine shuttle car seats, this study has focused on reducing injury risk by improving seating on transport vehicles such as scoops, mantrips, personnel carriers, and rail-mounted locomotives. Similarly, proposed seat design improvements included layering of various types of viscoelastic foam padding to isolate vehicle occupants and operators from adverse health effects of jarring/jolting exposure. This paper discusses the results obtained from laboratory vibration testing of new seat padding materials in seven configurations at the NIOSH – Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) showing that careful use of configuration and materials can reduce the operator’s exposure to WBV. In addition, results for four mine transport vehicles are presented from field data collection efforts at a Southwestern Pennsylvania mine showing that a NIOSH based design does reduce the operator’s exposure to WBV. Finally, the authors discuss efforts to develop and field test seat padding interventions using new padding materials and configurations based on the laboratory test results [The findings and conclusions in this report are those of the author(s) and do not represent the views of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.]

This publication summarizes, for potential contractors and other interested parties, the research, development, and demonstration contract projects programed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1979 (October 1, 1978-September 30, 1979) under its Mine Health and Safety Research program. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advances toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the system technology required to create a healthier and safer working environment for the Nation's miners.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to develop and evaluate a training workshop for mine safety training personnel. The workshop was based on the Instructional Development Institute (IDI) which has been used for nearly ten years to train educators and administrators in the application of a nine-step model for defining, developing, and evaluating instruction. The Mining Instructional Development Institute (MIDI) was developed by investigators at the University of Southern California as a two-phase project. Phase I involved the modification of the six-day IDI program (including audiovisual presentations, workbooks, games, and exercises) for use by mine safety trainers as a workshop lasting three and one-half days. Phase II involved the evaluation and validation of the prototype MIDI workshop by means of a two-stage jury of experts and a prototype field trial. On the basis of data collected in the validation process it was determined that the institute provided an effective and useful method of instruction in mine safety training and that the institute would be especially valuable for mine safety training administrators and supervisors.

This circular is part 5 of the third paper (entitled "Excavation") of a series summarizing the technical problems involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes; part 2, power scrapers, slackline cable-way excavators, and hydraulic monitors; part 3, hydraulic, clamshell, ladder, and dipper dredges; and part 4, haulage systems in general, with particular reference to locomotive and car, hoist and car, and remote-control systems. This circular discusses the use of motor trucks, conveyor belts, pumps end pipe lines, barges and towboats, and aerial trams. MOTOR-TRUCK HAULAGE During recent years motor trucks have gained considerable ground as a successful competitor of locomotive haulage for quarries and gravel pits. Often where trucks have displaced locomotives and cars the operators readily admit an increase in both labor and total haulage operating costs but point to some other advantage as offsetting the extra expense. In other instances haulage costs have beep reduced by the use of trucks. In still others operators, having replaced locomotive haul with trucks, have again returned to the earlier method. Obviously gasoline-driven motor trucks cannot successfully compete with other types of haulage under all conditions. The apparent' growth in the number of advocates of truck haulage, however, indicates that it has passed the experimental stage and become a permanent competitor to other tyres.

The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, has established a testing adit on the Government reservation at Mount Weather, Virginia, to facilitate research on the fundamentals of mining under actual metal-mining conditions. A number of sites in several Eastern States were investigated, but Mount Weather was selected because the rock seemed best suited for rock drilling and other mining tests and because the ground was already owned by the Federal Government, the site having been acquired in 1902 for use of the Weather Bureau. The testing adit has an advantage over an active metal mine for certain investigations because variable conditions affecting any particular research problem can be controlled and maintained in a fixed status, whereas in an operating mine this seldom is feasible. Operations were begin in September 1936, with a crew of four laborers under a resident engineer. The laborers were recruited from nearby farms, and although they had no previous mining experience, they have developed into satisfactory miners.

This report describes the results and conclusions of the development and evaluation of a unique concept for a lightweight air powered drill tool for probe drilling in anthracite mines. A concept model of the lightweight air powered tool was constructed and evaluation testing conducted at the Kocher Coal Company Porter Tunnel Mine. The unique anchoring method proved to be extremely satisfactory and the overall light-weight air powered drill tool concept proved feasible. Based on the results of the concept model testing, two prototype production units were designed and manufactured. These prototype units proved to meet all of their design requirements of lightweight, portability, drilling controllability, structural integrity and miner acceptance. The need for a better bit and drill steel system, however, became evident during the testing program and recommendations are made for further investigation and development of a bit and drill steel system suitable for this application.

"INTRODUCTION The development of methods for determining the total quantity of crude oil that a given pool could be expected to produce in the future and the well-spacing and drilling programs most likely to result in the recovery of the maximum quantity of oil at the minimum cost became problems of acute concern to American oil producers and petroleum engineers during the second decade of the twentieth century, The United States faced what seemed at that time to be a serious shortage of petroleum, and it appeared that the constantly increasing demand for petroleum and its products could not be adequately supplied. Undrilled prospective acreage, which until then had been plentiful, seemed to be getting scarcer, competition was increasing, the margin of profit to the producer was shrinking, and the need for developing constructive policies of conservation appeared paramount. As a result of physical and economic changes then taking place within the petroleum industry prompted by the seemingly uncertain future, accurate knowledge pertaining to the probable future production of oil wells and of oil lands especially was needed and greatly desired. Furthermore, the need for obtaining the maximum quantity of oil from known fields caused technical information - which up to that time had not been deemed essential to the successful and profitable operation of oil lands - to be sought eagerly. The need for technical information, such as methods for determining future reserves of oil and the rate at which the oil could be obtained under a specific program of drilling, was emphasized further with the passage of the Revenue Act of 1918, and oil producers with enough income to place them in the taxable class were compelled, for the first time, to report their taxable income 4/ to the Treasury Department."

In the course of another investigation4 during 1926 and 1927, samples of water collected from a few abandoned coal mines indicated that their drainage was usually lower in acidity than water from active mines in the same locality. In order to determine whether this condition might have a bearing on the advisability of sealing abandoned mines, a number of such mines were visited, samples of drainage were collected, and as much information as possible was obtained from officials of the mining companies and older residents of the district. Selection of a suitable coal or coals for the manufacture of coke of desired quality with due consideration of the purpose for which the coke is intended requires careful thought, and often it will pay to go to consider able expense in testing such coals as may be available. In general it will always be possible to obtain a satisfactory coal or blend of coals for the particular purpose in view, but in some places the cost of transportation would be prohibitive. It may then be necessary to consider a coal or coals inferior in grade, rank, or both. At times, in fact, only one inferior coal may be available, when the problem becomes mainly one of selecting equipment and operating conditions best adapted to that coal, keeping in mind that the end product of the plant must compete with the imported product in the market the plant will serve. This applies particularly to new projects for which it is necessary to build a plant and start with a clean slate, so to speak. However, it will pay every coke-plant manager to employ a force to continually test the coals used and the coke produced to make sure that the quality is not changing appreciably. Furthermore, if the supply of coals used becomes exhausted it will be necessary to use other coals. Continual testing is particularly necessary at plants using borderline coals or blends, where slight changes in the composition or in operation of the ovens may render them dangerously expanding. In this connection it should be stated that control in the newer coke plants is considerably easier than for those built a decade or so ago, consequently in the new ovens a given operating program can be maintained more precisely. This point is important, because one of the main requirements of the coke user is uniformity in both physical and chemical characteristics. For example, any appreciable changes in the quality of coke delivered to the blast?-furnace operator will involve changes in operation if the best results are to be obtained. Such changes are expensive usually they take considerable time and involve production of inferior iron.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the application of a diffusion model to sintering rate data developed for lithium titanium ferrite. The data were obtained by sintering pressed pellets under identical conditions for various times up to 11 hours. Stereological measurements were made on polished sections, and sintering rates were calculated. A model for intermediate stage sintering was fitted to the stereological data. This procedure produced a method by which these type data could be used to study the relative importance of volume and grain-boundary diffusion under a variety of sintering conditions.
