The Thai Copper Industries smelter (Thai Copper) is located some 200 km southeast of Bangkok near the MapTaPhut deep sea port in one of the industrial centres of Thailand. Although construction of the complex started in the mid 1990s, the smelter, acid plant and refinery were completed in 2004. Thai Copper is a state-of-the-art copper smelter processing imported concentrates with a total yearly capacity of 165,000 tonnes of cathodes. It employs the El Teniente Technology where concentrates are blended and smelted continuously in a primary smelting reactor to produce high grade matte or white metal. The white metal is converted in batches to blister copper in Hoboken siphon converters equipped with Air Liquide Shrouded Injector (ALS I) Technology for sonic injection of oxygen enriched air. Final refining is carried out in two anode furnaces prior to anode casting and electrorefining. Thai Copper and Air Liquide Canada executed a technical assistance agreement in late 2005. Pre-commissioning of the shrouded injectors took place in July and November 2006 while hot commissioning occurred in December 2006. This paper presents the major technical aspects of the joint commissioning, including the establishment of operating practices specific to shrouded injection converting. Preliminary results of this first commercial implementation of ALSI Technology in copper converting are also provided.

Due to changes in the solid-state conditions of minerals in the rocks surrounding hydrothermal, contact meta-somatic or metamorphosed ore deposits, positive or negative thermoluminescent anomalies may be found in their vicinity. Several types of equipment which can be used for both quantitative and semi-quantitative measurements of the emission are discussed and compared. Methods of selecting, preparing and testing samples to ensure reproducible results are outlined, along with the kind of data which can be obtained from different types of equipment. The normal thermoluminescence of rock-forming min~ erals in the common rock types is noted, and variations in the solid-state conditions in the wall rocks which will cause marked increases or decreases of true thermoluminescence are outlined, as well as the thermolum-nescence-like emissions which are present in the vicinity of ore deposits. NEW sources of supply of tungsten concentrates became necessary when the flow from the Far East was blocked in 1942. In Canada, one source has been noted in the workings of the Hollinger mine at Timmins, Ontario. For many years, a small amount of scheelite had been removed with the gold ore, and an appreciable tonnage of scheelite still remained in the mine. At the request of the Dominion Government, a plant was built to recover this scheelite in the form of a concentrate that could be used by the alloy-steel industry without further preparation. The plant began operating early in March, 1942, and a small tonnage of ore, carrying scheelite and gold values, has been treated daily since then. The possibility of recovering the scheelite had been considered on several previous occasions. Each time the proposal had been given up because the total profits from the enterprise were estimated to be insufficient to repay the capital cost of building the recovery plant. At the time the plant was built, additional information had been gathered about the tonnage and grade of the scheelite ore in the mine, and several thousand tons of ore grading higher than 0. 25 per cent WO3 (tungstic trioxide) were known to be available.

The copper-graphite metal matrix composites were fabricated by two different production methods: directly sintering with copper and graphite (Cu-Gr composite), and in-situ sintering with cuprous copper and graphite (Cu2O-Gr composite). During the in-situ reaction sintering, a redox reaction occurs at the interface of the Cu2O particles and Gr particles, resulting in the improved physical and mechanical properties of Cu2O-Gr composites. Compared with Cu-Gr composite, Cu2O-Gr composite has a higher compression strength at any given graphite content due to the improved interface bonding and uniformly distributed fine graphite particles in the matrix. Increasing graphite content decreases the mechanical properties of the copper-graphite composites. The compression strength of Cu2O-Gr composite is 50-100 MPa higher than that of Cu-Gr composite. INTRODUCTION Copper-graphite composites have been widely used in industry due to their low density, relatively high strength and hardness, good thermal and electrical conductivity, arc ablation resistance and self- lubrication ability (Grandin & Wiklund, 2018; Han & Xu, 1999; Huang et al., 2017). Electric sliding contact friction pair in the high-speed railway system and motor brush in electric contact components have a very high demand on electrical conductivity and self-lubrication ability of materials. The electric devices need to bear both mechanical load and high electric current. Copper-graphite composites with good mechanical, electric and self-lubrication properties are the best candidates for application in multifunctional electric sliding contact frication components. The relative sliding speed of friction pair is developing towards 100 m/s or even faster, which can withstand the electric flow of more than 800 A, and it is often accompanied with vibration and impact (Guo & Ding, 2008). Conventional wear-resistant materials can no longer meet the current requirements and this promotes the development of copper- graphite composites with excellent comprehensive properties (Ding, Chen, Zhu, Zhang, & Zhou, 2009; Yasar, Canakci, & Arslan, 2007). There are many ways to fabricate copper-graphite composites, mainly including powder metallurgy method, liquid immersion infiltration method, rapid sintering method and electrodeposition method (Kalin & Poljanec, 2018; Kim, Lee, & Han, 2014; Liu et al., 2018; Wang et al., 2018). Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the powder metallurgy method is the most commonly used one due to its simple process, high economic benefit, and industrial production applicability. The common steps of the powder metallurgy method are as follows (Samal, Parihar, & Chaira, 2013): firstly mixing the copper (copper alloy) powders and graphite with a certain ratio, following by die-forming, and then sintering at the high temperature with or without pressure. The advantage of copper-graphite composites is that the graphite distributed in the copper matrix uniformly and it can form a carbon diaphragm preventing the wear of the composite (Fu & He, 2010). However, the bonding strength of the interface between the copper matrix and the graphite is relative low as the combination between them is mechanical interlocking but not metallurgical bonding (Ma et al., 2008). It is meaningful to develop new fabrication technology of copper-graphite composites with better interface bonding, which could provide guidance for the design of copper-graphite composites with excellent comprehensive properties.

The Mildred Lake Settling Basin (MLSB) is the largest disposal site for mature fine tailings (MFT) at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. oil sands plant. Over the past years (since 1996), there has been a marked change in the densification behaviour of MFT in the MLSB. Methane-producing microorganisms, known as methanogens, have become very active, and large amounts of biogas (mainly methane) have been produced. Continued field monitoring of the MLSB has provided convincing evidence of the rapid densification process (rapid water drainage from the tailings) at the area with intense microbial activity. This rapid densification has caused pumping challenges in the transfer of fine tailings from the Mildred Lake Settling Basin for the creation of composite tailings. It may also have potential positive effects in accelerating the reclamation of the oil sands fine tailings. A field and laboratory research program was carried out to study the mechanism leading to the rapid densification phenomenon. A review and discussion of the research program is given and some results from the field investigations and small-scale column tests are presented in this paper.

"INTRODUCTIONThis article documents the current non-metallic mineral s resources of Manitoba (Fig. I), and makes comparisons with currently producing deposits in North America and elsewhere in the world. Industrial minerals may lack the glamour of gold, silver or the base metals, but they contributed approximately 20070 to the value of Manitoba's raw materials, and even out-performed our petroleum industry, except during the oil boom of the early eighties (Fig. 2). Values per tonne of industrial commodities can be as high or higher than for base metal ores. Commodity prices (Canadian), listed in the February 1988 issue of Industrial Minerals magazine, are: talc $202.00 - $306.00, sillimanite $427.00; kaolin $69.00 - $270.00; garnet $175.00 - $250.00; and mica $405.00 - $540.00. The prices are converted to Canadian dollars using the prevailing exchange rates of February I, 1988. Some commodities are not sold by weight. Building stone, for example, is sold by the cubic foot. An average rough granite block, 4 ft by 4 ft by 8 ft, is worth approximately $2000 sitting on the quarry 1100r in southeastern Manitoba (Fig. 3).Thus, not all rocks that do not contain sulphides are worthless. Some may be extracted more profitably than either the base or precious-metal bearing varieties.Industrial Mineral CommoditiesThe commodities available in Manitoba are described in two categories: (1) those already in production that have additional development or expansion potential, and (2) those not in production logical information available at this time.Current Industrial Mineral ProductionThe commodities described herein are currently in commercial production in Manitoba (Fig. 4). A method of applying ammonium hydroxide to a drill stem containing hydrogen sulphide gas and hydro-gen-sulphide-bearing oil and water so as to remove the hydrogen sulphide as ammonium sulphide is de-scribed. It was concluded that the method allowed trips with drill pipe filled with sour fluids to be made more safely, more rapidly, and more economically. INTRODUCTION THE DANGER of poisoning rig crews during drill stem tests of sour wells by exposing them to hydrogen sulphide gas is well known in Canada. Concentrations of hydro-gen sulphide in sour gases range from 0 to 40 volume percent. There have been numerous casualties from hydrogen sulphide exposure during drill stem testing. Some have resulted in permanent injuries; in some cases the injuries have been fatal. For example, in Alberta in 1957 there were four deaths and 100 exposures which required medical treatment. These fatalities and injuries indicate the need for a more effective way of handling hydrogen sulphide in oilfield operations.

Les statistiques de production au 1"" janvier 1990 indiquent que, depuis le début de son exploitation (1980), 10.3 Mt de minerai d'une teneur moyenne de 5,9 g Au/t ont été usinées. Les réserves sont estimées a 10,4 Mt à une teneur moyenne de 6,6 g Au/t jusqu' à une profondeur de-450m.Trois zones minéralisées sont présentement en exploitation. Ces zones sont caractérisées par la présence de veines de quartz-pyrite accompagnées localement de chalcopyrite. Les roches encaissantes sont les schistes a séricite (zone# 1), les roches volcaniclastiques de composition felsique (zone #2) et intermédiaire (zone #2, zone ouest) ainsi que les roches intrusives appartenant au pluton de Mooshla (zone ouest). Toutes ces roches ont subi un métamorphisme régional dont l'intensité correspond à la limite supérieure du facies schiste vert ( -425°C}.Les zones minéralisées sont situées à I' intérieur des zones de déformation et d'altération les plus intenses. L'étude des structures mineures nous indique que la région a subi plusieurs épisodes de déformation ductile a fragile qui sont antérieurs, contemporains et postérieurs al a minéralisation. L'analyse structurale indique également que la déformation majeure est associée à une importante phase de compression orientée N-S a NNE-SSW.L’ensemble des observations suggère que la minéralisation et I' altération associée sont de type épigénétique. La mise en place du minerai se serait effectuée à la fin de l'épisode principal de métamorphisme et de la déformation."

"How can the durability of asphalt pavement be doubled without increasing highway budgets? Asphalt containing asbestos can provide the desired performance with additional costs being made up by longer life. The addition of a low percentage of asbestos to an asphalt mix permits a higher asphalt content without any consequent loss in stability. It is mainly the higher asphalt content that provides improved performance and durability, although the fibrous reinforcement plays a key role in preventing the propagation of micro-fissures. THE estimation of the average value of gold ore involves many considerations, among them the correct sampling of the deposit, the dilution by waste, and the loss of high-grade fines. It is a common experience that, after all these factors have been evaluated, adjustment of the assays is necessary before satisfactory agreement between the calculated mine grade and the mill heads is obtained. In fact, at many mines the latter correction overshadows all others in the preparation of routine estimates. For this reason it is proposed to deal only with the mathematical treatment of mine assays and the problem of bringing estimates into conformity with the corrected mill heads. Mine assays differ from physical measurements because the range of values is very great and these are not symmetrically distributed above and below the average, there being fewer high than low results. There is no widely accepted mathematical procedure for determining the average of series of measurements which exhibit these characteristics. Customary practice consists in empirically reducing high assays until a satisfactory agreement with mill heads is reached. It was thought that more confidence could be placed in grade estimates if a logical basis for calculations could be devised .. In an attempt to find a fundamentally sound procedure, amenable to practical application, many series of assays comprising over 235,000 channel samples (1) were studied at Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited. Such an investigation could only be made where records covering many years of operation are available and where tabulating and calculating machines are in use. The results are recorded in the hope that the relationships noted for the large groups of assays used are of fundamental character and that the data will be useful to others dealing with the problem of grade estimation.

Arsenic is a highly toxic element and a known human carcinogen. It is often a contaminant in mine water discharges, particularly from gold mining and roasting operations, and has been found at concentrations as high as 4 g/L. Increasingly stringent controls on the concentration of arsenic allowed to be discharged into the environment cannot always be met by current treatment processes and thus enhanced technologies are required to achieve low treated effluent concentrations at reasonable costs. A novel two-step physicochemical treatment process was developed and tested at the bench-scale using synthetic mine water solutions (SMWs) in order to reduce arsenic concentrations in treated effluent to exceed current discharge regulations. The process includes chemical coagulation with ferric sulphate and ballasted flocculation for enhanced solid-liquid separation. The SMW contained 59 ± 2 mg/L arsenic with a slightly alkaline pH. The effect of arsenic speciation on the process was tested by using either arsenite, As(III), or arsenate, As(V), in the SMW solutions. Tests were performed at cold temperature (3 ± 1 °C) to ensure the process? efficacy year-round in northern climates. Arsenic in As(V) SMW solutions was removed to a final total concentration of 0.0054 ± 0.002 mg/L, almost half the current recommended allowable drinking water concentration of 0.010 mg/L. As(III) was removed to a concentration below the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations? (MMER) current limit of 0.50 mg/L, to 0.32 ± 0.06 mg/L, with double the coagulant dose used in Stage 1 for As(V) removal. Oxidant addition at a concentration of 5 mg KMnO4/L in Stage 2 resulted in final total arsenic concentrations of 0.017 ± 0.002 mg/L and pH adjustment with lime in Stage 2 resulted in 0.0415 ± 0.0007 mg As/L in treated As(III) SMW. Both of these modifications to the process reduced arsenic concentrations to below proposed new MMER limits (i.e., 0.10 mg/L). This two-stage treatment process was shown to reduce arsenic concentrations to well below current treatment guidelines while reducing or eliminating chemical oxidant demand.

429 As part of Inco's S02 abatement project for its Sudbury operations, a weak acid treatment plant (W ATP) was commissioned at the Copper Cliff smelter in August of 2004 to treat the weak acid streams generated by the flash furnaces, the MK reactor and the fluidized bed roaster (FBR) gas cleaning plants. The W ATP process was developed by Inco Technical Services Limited (ITSL) by means of laboratory and mini-pilot plant programs. In the W ATP process, the feed solution containing arsenic, sulphur dioxide, iron and other impurities is treated by oxidation and neutralization to form a stable precipitate for disposal in Inco's tailings impoundment area. During the commissioning of the WATP, a team of operations, maintenance, engineering, project and R&D personnel was formed, and the designed capacity was achieved in less than a month. Since then, the W A TP has been operating smoothly and the impurities, specifically arsenic, in the Copper Cliff smelting process have been effectively removed.

The level of Si and Cu in the 3xx series of alloys affects the volume fraction of the a-Al dendritic phase and the Al-Si eutectic phase. The volume fraction of these phases in turn affects the feeding conditions during solidification and ultimately the Area Fraction Porosity and Mean Pore Diameter measured in the as-cast structure. This work sets out to establish the relationship between the volume fraction of the a-Al dendritic phase and the Al-Si eutectic phase and the resulting porosity that forms on the Monotonic and High Cycle Fatigue properties. The alloys in question are the Al-9%Si-l %Cu and a Al-7%Si-4%Cu alloys which were cast into V8 performance engine block castings and then heat treated to achieve desired mechanical properties. The engine block castings provided the mechanical and metallographic test samples analyzed for this work.

THE Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company's underground mine at Flin Flon, Manitoba, has in the past been serviced by two working shafts-the North Main shaft, and the No. 3 shaft. The North Main shaft is used to hoist the total production from under-ground, and handles the greater part of the mine supplies and crews. The shaft is five-compartment design, rectangular in cross-section, and is equipped entirely with steel shaft sets from the surface to the finished depth of 2,210 feet. Hoisting equipment in the surface plant will not permit the North Main shaft to be extended below its present finished depth. The No. 3 shaft, located approximately 2,300 feet from the North Main shaft, is used primarily as a ventilation shaft, and for hoisting lower-level development waste to the 390 level, where this material is used as mine fill. The No. 3 shaft is of standard rectangular design, timbered with 8-in. by 8-in. creosoted fir sets, hung on 6-foot centres. From the surface to the 1,430 level, the No. 3 shaft consists of three 5 ft. by 5 ft. compartments, and below this level to the completed depth of 2,300 feet, the shaft is increased to four compartments. To service the mine and to expedite development below the 2,210 level, a one and one-half compartment winze was sunk from the 2,210 level to a depth of 766 feet, or approxima tel y the 3,000 level.

"This is a report on the combined application of ""long-chain"" flocculants and classifier cyclones in the field of slimes treatment, with emphasis on the simultaneous thickening and clarifying of industrial effluents, at low cost. The principle of the process described below involves: (1) the formation of small floes of relatively great strength, by sequential dispersion and conditioning, with average floe size of about 1501 microns; (2) the floes being of sufficient strength to withstand the shearing forces operating within a cyclone and consequently behaving as solid particles with an equivalent diameter (Stokes) that exceeds the size cutpoint of the classifier cyclone; (3) the removal of flocculated solids by means of a classifier cyclone the size cutpoint of which permits effective separation of these solids from the water. Results of test work to date indicate that a broader use of cyclones in industry is possible with the above types of flocculants because the submicron particles and colloidal material are readily collected and clear water is produced, with the attendant advantages of compact construction and low cost that are characteristic of centrifugal separation. The process generally permits classifier cyclones of medium throughput capacity (e.g. 12-in. diam.) to be used for clarifying effluents that contain minus 10-micron particles."

Laronde Mine has been working for a number of years to identify substances that could contribute to process water toxicity and to find an effective way of removing these contaminants from the water. Initial studies have identified ammonia, nitrite, cyanide, thiocyanate, cyanate, dissolved organic carbon, copper and zinc as potential toxicants. Bench-scale tests were carried out with Lakefield Research to find a water treatment process that could effectively remove the suspected toxicants. Nine treatment processes were evaluated: 1) granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration followed by zeolite, 2) zeolite filtration followed by GAC filtration, 3) aeration followed by GAC filtration, 4) multi-stage GAC filtration, 5) chlorination followed by dechlorination, 6) addition of clay based polymer, 7) treatment with peroxide and ultra-violet light, 8) bulk addition of GAC and zeolite powder, 9) treatment with bacteria. This article presents a summary of the test results and of the problems associated with the evaluation of technologies for the treatment of toxicity.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in 1924. I endeavoured to present the position held by the mineral industries in the commercial life of this country. The facts and figures were presented at that time in a detached way. Since then, however, I have made some attempt to analyze them in order to determine the causes for that position and to draw some conclusions as to the future of the mining industry. As everyone knows, our trade figures are very often used in political discussion, especially in discussion of tariff policy. It would be entirely out of order for me to say anything touching the tariff issue and I want to have it clearly understood that, in my opinion, the material I am about to present contains not a single statement or conclusion which anyone would be warranted in using as an argument for either a lower or a higher tariff or for tariff changes of any kind. As a starting point, let me re-state, very sketchily, Canada's general situation in external trade. In the last calendar year, 1924, we sold Canadian merchandise of all kinds to other countries to the value of $1,045,000,000 in round figures. Our purchases abroad reached about $893,000,000. Thus our sales exceeded our purchases by roughly $152,000,000. In other words, we had what is known as a 'favourable balance of trade' - one of the biggest favourable balances we have ever had in our history. The proceeds of our sales of Canadian products enabled us to meet the bills for all our purchases of foreign commodities and, in addition, placed a large surplus to our credit with which to offset our interest charges and other obligations abroad.

Abstract -Detailed sampling using a portable diamond drill, and interlaboratory comparison of selected samples have been combined with statistical studies of truncated populations to establish the gold content of several outcrops in the Val d'Or area. The outcrops chosen are non-mineralized. The background gold concentration in the rocks of the region is 5 ppb or Jess. Gold is distributed relatively homogeneously within the outcrops studied except for slightly increased concentrations within quartz-tourmaline veinlets. Three samples, of which 20 grams of powder are analyzed for each, can adequately determine the gold concentration of a structurally simple outcrop in the Val d'Or area.
