"The Ontario Division of Inca Metals Company, a Unit of Inca Limited, operates eleven mines, four mills, three refineries, one smelter and one iron ore recovery plant. All but one mine, mill and refinery are located within a fifty kilometer radius of Sudbury, Ontario. A mine-mill complex is located some 100 kilometers west of Thunder Bay on the shore of Lake Shebandowan and a nickel refinery at Port Colborne.During the past 10 years the use of recycled water in our milling operations has increased to more than 95% at each mill. This high degree of water reuse has reduced the (a) need for fresh water and (b) the contaminant level of the downstream aquatic environment. The aggregating of effluents in a common receptor provides a process water having a consistent quality thereby minimizing upsets in mill metallurgy while concurrently improving the operating economies and the downstream aquatic environment."

The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. The preparation of coal for the commercial market is a study both varied and wide, and can be viewed from many angles and in different ways. This short paper can but touch upon the subject and is intended to discuss briefly preparation plants which in some cases would seem to be quite inadequate. The conditions confronting most operators are similar, inasmuch as the existing plants were not built specifically to prepare a product for the market of today, but rather of yesterday. The tremendous strides made in the field of combustion in recent years require that the product be of the highest grade procurable, and in a glutted and somewhat restricted market the buyer may be more pernickety than otherwise. These would appear to be the conditions of today. Where a mine is operated individually, better all-round results seem more readily procurable than in a consolidated effort where so many different conditions are sure to arise demanding cognizance, and in many cases requiring to be incorporated in the scheme of things. In the case of a number of mines being administered to form a central source, that source not having had anything to do with the bringing into being of the institutions over which it presides, we find some of the mines well equipped with facilities to properly screen and load the coal, while in others the facilities are not so good, but are doing their share towards delivering a product that will pass muster and in such quantities that they can be counted on.

The gold deposit of the Lapa mine has a complex mineralogical gold state with coarse and fine native gold, aurostibite and submicroscopic gold within arsenopyrite. A specific mineralogical characterization of the refractory fraction was conducted combining various techniques such as optical microscopy, electron microscopy, electron microprobe and secondary ion mass spectrometry. In parallel, the mineral processing behaviour and the recovery of the refractory gold were studied by pressure oxidation and cyanide leaching. This paper presents the mineralogical methodology developed to characterize the refractory gold distribution within arsenopyrite. These results are presented and interpreted in order to plot gold recovery versus sulphide oxidation. The comparison of the metallurgical behaviour yields predicted from the mineralogical data and the one calculated from leaching tests shows a good agreement and allows mineralogical explanations of the gold metallurgical behaviour.

Before entering into a discussion of wet washing, it will be advisable to consider the various phases and conditions sur- rounding the problem of cleaning coal from the Corbin mines. Corbin is located in the south-east part of British Columbia in the Crowsnest Pass district, about 35 miles north of the International boundary and about three miles west of the Flat-head Range of the Rocky Mountains. It is reached by a rail-way, about thirteen miles long, from McGillivray, B.C., a point on the Crowsnest branch of the Canadian Pacific rail-way, owned and operated by the Eastern British Columbia Railway Company, a subsidiary company of Corbin Coals, Limited. The coal is assumed to occur here, as principally elsewhere in the Rockies, in the Kootenai series of the Lower Cretaceous, but owing to the disturbed condition of the surrounding country and, therefore, the magnitude of the geological study involved, this has never been definitely worked out. The coal is of the usual Crowsnest high-grade steam-coal, containing from 9 to 12 per cent. of ash, but appears to have 4 to 5 per cent. less volatile combustible matter than other coals being mined in this district, a representative analysis being about as follows:

The author has covered •briefly the location of the heavy •and asphalt-base oil fields, their geology, current drilling and production practice, the location of the •refineries capable of handling heavy crude, their products and markets, and the problems and future prospects of the industry.Location and Description of FieldsThe term heavy oil is generally used to denote crude of 20.9° gravity and under. Since the products from heavy oil are also to a lesser extent obtained from asphalt-base crudes of higher gravity, some mention will be made here of the latter; but in general the emphasis of the paper is on heavy oil as such.In the order of their production to date, the heavy oil fields and those light oil fields which produce asphalt-base crudes are : Lloydminster, Taber, Vermilion, Conrad, Princess, and Wainwright.The Lloydminster oil field has not only produced most of the heavy oil, but also is currently the largest producer, supplying at the present time about 80 per cent of the heavy and asphalt-base crudes produced in Western Canada."

"The low consumption of reagents can probably be attributed to a good clean type of ore. The cyanide level is kept at 0. 8 lb/ ton of solution and the lime at 1. 8 to 1.9 lb per ton of solution (pH 12. 2 to 12 .3). Experience in cutting down the lime level in half produced troubles in the presses, in the refinery and resulted in higher cyanide consumption. Finally the residue increased under these conditions, High lime always seems to prevent the trouble from occurring.A survey at one mine of the taxable work, performed in the mine shops for use in the mine, showed that under the new regulations, this had increased some 30 times what it was before the new rules came into effect on June 14, 1963.A water softener idea is incorporated at Lamaque with the crude addition of 100 lb of lime per shift to a spare agitator to precipitate the bicarbonates as carbonates from the water before it enters the mill. The lime titration of the softened water is about 0,2 to 0.3 lb per ton of solution (pH 11). This water is used mainly on the filters as washes."

A quantitative model based on strain accumulation in multi-pass rolling is developed to overcome a large critical strain for dynamic recrystallisation in a Nb microalloyed steel with high Mn content (HTP steel). The larger the critical strain for dynamic recrystallisation, the finer is the dynamically recrystallised grain size. The initial mill trial showed that it is feasible to achieve ultra-fine grain size by dynamic recrystallisation but the prevention of static recrystallisation in between passes is identified as an essential condition to suppress mixed grain size. The data-base on static softening kinetics at short interpass time was experimentally determined on WUMSI and incorporated in the model. The model is used to optimise the strip rolling schedule to prevent static recrystallisation in the interpass time. The rolling simulation of strip rolling schedule has validated the model prediction that it is possible to obtain a uniform ultra-fine ferrite grain size of about 1-2 micrometer diameter in final ferrite microstructure for industrial rolling parameters. A user friendly software package has been developed to apply the model for off-line control of mill processing parameters, i.e., time-temperature-deformation schedule of finish rolling in order to accumulate large strain to overcome a large critical strain for dynamic recrystallisation. The model is a powerful predictive tool for grain size control in multi-pass rolling.

This paper presents the results of comparative analysis of effective income-based tax rates for mining in the Northwest Territories (NWT), selected Canadian provinces and international jurisdictions. The study was done as background to a review of royalty regulations for the NWT. ObjectiveThis paper presents results of comparative analysis of effective mining royalty1 rates, and combined effective mining royalty and income tax rates on selected mine models for the Northwest Territories (NWT), with those for several other jurisdictions in Canada and abroad which compete with the NWT for mining investment.BackgroundThe February 27, 1995 federal budget directed the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) to proceed with a comprehensive review and amendments to northern natural resource management legislation in order “to increase revenues and ensure a fair return to the Crown.” DIAND is responsible for the administration of the Territorial Lands Act, and its regulations.The Territorial Lands Act gives the Governor-in-Council the authority to “… make regulations for the leasing of mining rights in, under or on territorial lands and the payment of royalties therefor,…”. In the NWT, the Canada Mining Regulations (CMR) provide for the disposition of mineral rights for most minerals, other than coal, petroleum and related hydrocarbons, in return for the payment of a royalty to the Crown.As part of this review of the NWT mining royalty regime, several computer mine models were developed and tax regimes in a number of jurisdictions were analyzed. Effective mining royalty rates, and the combined effective mining royalty and income tax rates were compared across the jurisdictions. The results presented in this paper are a part of the background work done in preparing a discussion paper on proposed changes to the NWT mining royalty that is expected to be released for public consultation in the very near future."

"Microwave induced cracks have the potential to enhance metal recovery from coarse sphalerite particles in heap leaching operations by creating new crack surface areas for lixiviant and enhancing value mineral exposure. The mode of fracture and the extent of mineral exposure due to microwave induced cracks have not yet been investigated. The objective of this study was to determine the extent of particle damage and mineral exposure in microwave treated particles. This was done using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and image analysis techniques. XCT analysis was conducted on small (–5+4.75 mm), medium (–16+9.5 mm), and large (–25+19 mm) sphalerite ore particles before and after microwave treatment (MT). Geometrical properties, such as volume and surface area of each mineral phase in each particle was determined from the XCT reconstructed images using VGStudioMax image analysis software. These geometrical properties were used to calculate the interfacial areas of sulphide mineral grains in microwave treated particles before and after MT. The ratio of specific interfacial area after MT to specific interfacial area before treatment was used as an indicator of the degree of preferential grain boundary fracture. The results showed significant grain boundary fracture after MT at all sizes. For small sized particles, about 31% of the interfacial area was lost compared to 23 and 16% for medium and large particles, respectively. The results also showed an increase in the degree of mineral grain exposure of 28, 26, and 15% for small, medium, and large particles, respectively, after MT. These results provide experimental evidence supporting improved mineral exposure due to MT. INTRODUCTIONFor some years it has been suggested that microwave treatment (MT) of ores might result in preferential grain boundary fracture that would have benefits such as improved grain exposure and particle weakening. (Kingman, 2006). Most of the experimental work investigating the application of microwaves to mineral processing flow sheets has focused on assessing the benefits of applying microwave technology to flow sheets consisting of size reduction and mechanical flotation cells (Kingman et al., 2004). Experimental studies have shown that coarse crushing during tertiary grinding of microwave treated ore resulted in a better liberated coarser flotation feed (Scott, Bradshaw, & Eksteen, 2008). It has been suggested that improved liberation in milled flotation feed, was due to the presence of grain boundary fracture in microwave treated particles. However, this improvement in coarse particle liberation does not necessarily translate to a significant improvement in downstream flotation recovery (Kobusheshe, 2010). This is as a result of the size limit to the flotation of coarse material, due to detachment forces acting on particle-bubble aggregates, which increase as the particle size increases (Jameson, 2012). Current conventional, mechanically agitated flotation cells are not designed to float coarse material (Jameson, 2012). Hence it has been difficult to show the downstream processing benefits of applying microwaves to ores processed by comminution followed by flotation (Kobusheshe, 2010). It is clear from investigations carried out so far that inappropriate downstream exploitation of microwave treated ore would fail to realise a meaningful process benefit (Kobusheshe, 2010; Ali & Bradshaw, 2011)."

Large-scale industrial production of pipe began with longitudinal hot pressure welding of wrought iron by passage of skelp (narrow strip with beveled edges) through a die or bell that curled it about a longitudinal axis until the edges were forced together. Such small to medium tubes could be reduced by rolling or drawing; with threaded connections, they were excellent for distribution of clean water and of illuminating gas for street, home and industrial lighting. Although steel lacks the fluxing slag for pressure welding it has hot strength similar to iron; hot-pressure bell welding was advantageously transferred to steel in long coiled strip with 50% higher cold strength. For pipe without weld-line defects, hot cupping followed by Pilger mill rolling produced tubing that revolutionized bicycle quality and high-pressure service for boilers and chemical processing. Mannesman hot rotary piercing produced long thick walled tube that permitted reduction or expansion by rolling to provide pipe sections up to 60 cm diameter and 12 m long. During 1910 - 1940, oil and gas pipeline technologies, notably welding evolved markedly as they proliferated in the United States, in response to far-flung petroleum fields, expanding industry consumption and the automobile revolution. In the Second World War combat pipelines were laid rapidly, such as: the Canol line through the Yukon to Alaska, and fuel supply lines across the channel and through liberated France. Perfection of welding techniques for both longitudinal and spiral weld large diameter pipe in combination with controlled-rolling of micro-alloyed steels made possible reliable Arctic pipelines. The development of pipe production and utilization in Canada is recounted. The fabrication techniques and metallurgical controls are explained.

Quality and durability of sprayed concrete depends on the concrete mix design, the type and use of accelerator and all the aspects of the placement onto the rock surface in the underground working. A large number of influence factors are involved and they must be managed for a successful and durable permanent sprayed concrete structure to be produced. The paper discusses some of the central issues, including how to view the long-term effects of chemical admixtures and accelerators in wetmix sprayed concrete. Permanent lining sprayed concrete for rock support is increasingly being used today and the durability can be equally achieved as for any other concrete.

PRIOR to June, 1937, the employees of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd., at Timmins, Ontario, received medical care for themselves under a contract system developed through an agreement between the employer, employee, and a contract physician. This form of practice is common to the mining industry in Ontario. But with the improvement in mining methods and conditions of living, and through an increasing demand for provision of a complete medical care, it was not any surprise when the employees of the Hollinger mine approached organized medicine and indicated their desire for a plan to provide their families with a more or less complete medical service in addition to that supplied for themselves. In April, 1937, this approach was made, and on June 18th, 1937, the Hollinger Employees' Medical Services Association was formed and started to provide medical services. A review of five years' experience is now presented. The Association provides complete medical service for the employee, his wife and family, as well as those dependents who are the total responsibility of the employee. The employee membership is limited to employees at the Hollinger mine in Timmins who reside in the immediate vicinity. The employee is examined by a Company doctor on application for employment and is subject to further examination by a specialise in chest diseases under the direction of the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. The wife and family are not subject to examination but have to be registered when the employee is accepted for employment. The dependents, other than the immediate family, are subject to medical examination and approval after the employee has applied for such dependent or dependents to be admitted. Membership in the Association is obligatory when the employee is hired, but at the end of any Association year he may drop out if he so wishes.

The statistical base required for the formulation of the statistical models includes 58 commercial porphyry-copper-molybdenum deposits of the Cordilleran Belt from which geological, geometric and economic data were collected. Predictive and composite models are derived from the statistical study to assist explorat10n. planning, engineering studies and fmanc1al analyses as required for the development of new porphyry deposits in the Cordilleran Belt.

At Cameco Corporations' Cigar Lake Project, large excavations are developed on the 480 Level and 500 Level must remain stable for at least 15 years to host underground processing infrastructure. Following the successful dewatering of the mine in October 2009, subsequent internal rockmechanics investigations augmented by third party technical investigations; determined that to keep the back of the Water Flush Crusher/Run-of-Mine (WFC/ROMs) excavation stable; required a rehabilitation strategy to mitigate deterioration/deformation of the WFC walls and intersection pillars. The mechanism of failure propagating the movement of the excavation walls is understood to be controlled by the presence of a dominant E-W striking and steeply dipping foliation within a relatively weak and mildly altered rockmass sub-parallel in strike with 14 meters high walls and an intersection span approaching 15 meters. The application of open and resourceful communications between site mining engineers, geologists, contract mining staff, construction management experts, corporate mining and civil engineers, and third party technical experts resulted in a multi-faceted short-term ground support strategy consisting of standard bolting and screening, deep-seated modified-strand cable bolts coupled with heavy gauge mesh straps, rockmass reconditioning using low-pressure grout injection, and horizontal cable-lacing for the intersection pillars applied in lifts using a top-down methodology. The intention of the short-term strategy was to stabilize the excavation so that a long-term structural steel support installation - consisting of composite concrete walls, and arch support applied to the side walls and crown of the back - could be constructed safely. This paper summarizes the evolution of the short and long-term ground support strategy and criteria for the WFC/ROMs excavation developed using elements of civil, mining and hydrogeologic design.

The massive sulphides containing ore values in zinc, lead, copper and silver were discovered in 1953 as a result of a joint venture between the American Metal Company and the International Nickel Company of Canada. The discovery was named after Mr. Heath Steele, manager of exploration for Amco at the time of the discovery.Mill production began in February 1957; however, the mine was forced to shutdown in 1958 due to depressed metal prices and metallurgical problems. It was re-opened in 1962 and milling operations resumed at 725 t/d until 1968 when the milling capacity was boosted to 1450 t/d and then to 2700 t/d in 1969.OreThe main ore zones are massive sulphides with very fine mineral grain. The chalcopyrite, galena and marmatitesphalerite occurrences are finely disseminated.Liberation is accomplished by grinding to 68% to 72% <400 mesh. Average mill feed assays are 0.8% to 1.2% copper, 1.8% to 2.5% lead, and 5.5% to 6.5% zinc, with 60 to 75 g/t silver."

"Hydrocyclones are used in various industrial applications, including mineral processing and tailings management, to separate or classify solid particles and/or liquid droplets from multiphase feed. The fluid flow in a hydrocyclone (used in mineral processing) was investigated numerically and experimentally using particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. Two turbulence models were used in the calculations: the k–? model and the Reynolds stress model. Particle image velocimetry measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow-rate readings at the boundaries, and locally by comparing the PIV velocity-vector maps and profiles.RÉSUMÉ On utilise les hydrocyclones dans diverses applications industrielles, dont la minéralurgie et la gestion des résidus, pour séparer les particules solides et/ou les gouttelettes liquides de l’alimentation polyphasée, ou pour les classifier. Une étude numérique et expérimentale sur l’écoulement des fluides dans un hydrocyclone (dont on se sert en minéralurgie) a été menée à l’aide des techniques de vélocimétrie par images de particules (PIV, de l’anglais particle image velocimetry) et d’appariement des indices de réfraction. Deux modèles de turbulence ont été utilisés dans ces calculs, à savoir le modèle de turbulence k–? et le modèle aux tensions de Reynolds (RSM, de l’anglais Reynolds stress model). Injection of biomass into blast furnace as alternative reducing agent is so effective for the purpose of mitigation of carbon dioxide emissions from steel industries, because biomass is considered to be carbon neutral raw materials. Certain amount of Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) is abandoned after Palm oil extraction process. To use as a reducing agent of blast furnace, PKS was carbonized and classified by 100 mesh sieve. To examine the gasification behavior of PKS carbide under the blast furnace conditions, several combustion experiments were conducted using hot model experimental furnace. The experimental results showed that the gasification efficiency of PKS carbide increased as the quantity of volatile matter increased. This tendency is the almost the same for the pulverized coal, so carbide of PKS can be used at blast furnace at appropriate amount of volatile matter that can be controlled by carbonization condition. In addition, the pressure drop of the furnace tends to decrease because the amount of ash in PKS carbide may be smaller than that of pulverized coal. PKS carbide is a suitable reducing agent in that respect.

Industry is relying on the education system to provide them with the core base for their future workforce. To accomplish this, the education system needs the support of industry to develop the right focus to prepare its students for the race. What skills will our future workforce need? How can we best prepare our students for these needs?Teaching the latest in technology, especially at the high school level, is a major challenge. It is difficult for educators to keep abreast of the rapid changes in technology. High school graduates need exposure to the latest advancements. And so do their teachers. Students must be prepared to adapt to the challenges of the future, Le. global competition, rapid technological change and an expanding knowledge base."
