Copper mining and smelting has been carried out in Japan for over 13 centuries and in fact stretching back into antiquity. In 1889, the first electrolytic copper refinery in Japan based on Elkington’s principles was started by Furukawa Mining at Honjyo in downtown Tokyo based on the multiple or parallel system. Within two decades, a number of other copper refineries had begun operation. Interestingly, but perhaps not surprising given Japan’s long history of copper production, this first refinery in Japan commenced just ten years after the first refinery in the USA (1879), and not long after the first plants in Europe. By 1935, as a result of growth in copper demand, there were six domestic copper electro-refineries in Japan with an installed capacity of 97,800 tonnes/a, while actual production was 71,200 tonnes/a. Since about 1932, the majority of these plants were based on the more common parallel or multiple system. In 1946, just after World War II, domestic production capacity had dropped considerably to 29,000 tonnes/a, however with reconstruction, capacity and production expanded rapidly, with production reaching 81,000 tonnes/a in 1955, 187,000 tonnes/a in 1960 and 307,000 tonnes/a in 1965. The introduction of the first refinery and the early ones that followed and subsequent developments are discussed in this paper. The major technical achievements during the high growth period from 1945 to 1963 included: the use of fire- refined anodes; the introduction of newly-developed rectifiers; the introduction of lead-lined or vinyl-lined concrete cells; improvements in the electrolyte heating system; application of improved anti-corrosion materials and the introduction of heat-insulating surface coverings. In 2018, Japan’s refined copper production totaled 1,595,000 tonnes of copper, with Japan ranking third in the world after China and Chile. There are now eight copper refineries in Japan which provide Japan’s production of refined copper. These plants are listed in Table 1 (Wood Mackenzie, 2019), also showing the production trend since 2013; in general, production over this period has been relatively steady. The Toyo plant is now the 7th largest copper refinery in the world after several large plants as rated by capacity in China, Russia and India (ICSG, 2019).

"Drilling results from the established levels at AngloRouyn Mines Limited had indicated inadequate tonnages to meet the planning schedule. It was decided to develop the main zone of the orebody below the bottom working level of the mine. The orebody dips north at an average of 50 degrees and plunges to the west at about 10 degrees. Due to the need for rapid development of this area, a decision was made to use trackless equipment.This paper describes the method used and highlights the use of small 5-ton diesel trucks as carriers for the 2-cu.yd LHD machine. The method achieved advances of about 1,000 feet per month, at a dip of 12 degrees over a length of close to 2,000 feet, using as few as 20 men per day."

Mining companies can improve production and reduce costs by using the best available technology to control their operations. Many mines are challenged to use multivariable predictive control due to limited experience or staffing, as well as being concerned over the robustness and sustainability of predictive controls. As a result many mines are not realizing optimal performance from their assets, and thusly are not realizing the production increases or cost reductions that this technology can deliver. Over the past few years, the application of multivariable model-based predictive control has gained acceptance in many mining processes and has proven to be robust and sustainable for some of the most challenging mining processes. New automated modeling and performance monitoring software have greatly simplified the effort to implement and maintain these solutions. In addition, many progressive companies have chosen to co-source the implementation and service of these solutions to assure project success and continued benefits stream. This technology has been successfully applied to a wide variety of processes; grinding mills, alumina digestion, CCD washer and thickeners, kilns, calciners, roasters, flash smelters, heat exchangers, evaporators, and most recently in the demanding process of flotation. This paper discusses the state-of-the art in advance control technologies in the mining industry, including the impact of these technologies on maximizing benefits, and implementing best practices for long term sustainability. Benefits from recent multivariable predictive control applications in copper mining will be reviewed, and the use of the latest predictive control technologies and practices in mining will be discussed.

On exploite le chrysotile dans le sud du Quebec depuis plus de cent ans. Au cours des dernieres decennies, cette variete d'amiante est devenue une des principales substances minerales produites au Quebec. Bien que la production de fibres d'amiante ait diminue de J 365 779 ten /979 a que!que 700 000 ten 1983, le Quebec n'en demeure pas mains une des principa/es sources d'approvisionnement mondial de ce mineral, la valeur des exportations quebecoises ayant ete de l'ordre de 315 millions de dollars en 1983. Dans la presente contribution, nous passons en revue que!ques-unes des notions mineralogiques sur l'amiante, depuis l'etymologie du mot et les proprietes physico-chimiques du mineral, jusqu'd ses principales utilisations commercia/es et industrielles. Un des deux objectifs principaux de noire article est de definir brievement le contexte geologique regional, la lithologie et /'age des roches ultramafiques serpentinisees et de decrire les principales caracteristiques des gftes de chrysotile qu'elles renferment et qui furent exploites a date dans /es Appa/aches du sud quebecois. Nous concluons en dressant un tableau synoptique de la metallogenie et en soulignant le role preponderant qu 'ont joue /es mouvements tectoniques majeurs, a la jonction des plaques et au sein des feuillets et copeaux de la croute oceanique (lithosphere et manteau superieur), sur la genese des gftes de chrysotile dans les roches ultramafiques serpentinisees, et tout particu!ierement dans celles associees aux series ophiolitiques du Paleozaique inf erieur.

"Grande Cache Coal (GCC), an investor-owned Alberta company, is in the final stages of the regulatory process leading to the resumption of coal mining in the Smoky River Coal Field of Alberta. Although many opportunities for low-cost, high-yield mining remained on the property, GCC opted for a long-term production plan that ensures stability for the local economy, sustainable use of the resources in the area, environmental responsibility and a satisfactory return for its investors.GCC entered the Alberta coal approval process in late 2000 with a public disclosure document. In October 2001, GCC formally submitted an application for mining approval and an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to the government and the public. The application covered the proposed Grande Cache Coal project, which includes the No. 7 underground mine, No. 8 surface mine and coal processing operations. The EIA provided a comprehensive investigation of environmental sensitivities in the project area, matched with environmental protection programs. The project is based on commencement of operations in late 2002. GCC’s plans are founded on a commitment to sustainable development and has framed this commitment in the context of a long-range mine development plan that will sustain the community of Grande Cache over the next 25 years. The Grande Cache coalfields offer extensive coal reserves and opportunities, for both surface and underground mining. Combining highly productive U.S.-style room and- pillar underground mining methods and conventional truck-and-shovel open pit mining, GCC’s approach to sustainable development encompasses community involvement and reclamation of mine sites to productive land uses after mining."

Sohio Petroleum Company's new L-Bar uranium mill near Grants, New Mexico. refines 2722 kilograms of yellowcake daily from 1360 metric tons of ore produced at Sohio 's J.J. No. 1 mine and other nearby mines. This paper follows the ore from the mine through the various processing steps - semi-autogenous grinding, acid leaching , countercurrent decantation, solvent extraction , ammonium diuranate precipitation, washing and drying, and tailings disposal.

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. "Raw material management means not only mining and processing of primary raw materials like ores, but means also collecting and processing secondary sources of raw materials. Recycling is one of the most developing field of raw material management in Europe, and its solutions are derived from mineral processing roots and principals. Complexity and challenges of the field of recycling results innovative solutions of material processing- Since European Union identified 20 raw materials as critical (CRM) due to lack of primary sources within the border of the EU, recycling become more recognised as source of different raw materials. WEEE is the waste streams contains many of the critical elements and along them at least 15 different species of plastics of which recycling is delayed by a lack of effective separation technique. Most paper deals with separation methods based on different specific gravity, triboelectric charge or surface properties of plastic species. Plastics however have differences of thermal properties and thermoplastics, duroplasts and elastomers can be recognised. The experiments described in the paper aimed to determine thermo adhesive behaviour of plastic species often identified in WEEE streams for separation purposes. According to the results, some plastic types as PS, PP. PC or PVC and PET pairs are possible to easily separate from each other, however different additives are changing thermo adhesive properties of most of the plastics that makes industrial process difficult to develop. Along thermo adhesive behaviour, combination of physical interaction can be used to enhance separation selectivity.INTRODUCTIONPlastics has a relatively long term of history as a light, multi-functional material in construction, packaging, automotive industry and electric and electronic products. There are a numerous types of plastic species can be used for various applications therefore they amount are growing from year to year. This quantity however become part of the waste stream and while metal recycling has been done for decades due to its economic value - cheap plastic parts are less desirable as secondary products. In 2013 an annual 5% of plastic production growth has been estimated with a base data of 265 million tonnes at 2010 (Guiqing & Zhenming, 2013). Since landfill requirements are increasing while—especially in Europe where actual regulations are trying to deflect waste from landfills - landfill capacities are decreasing, costs are become more and more expensive, Applications like energy production based on plastics as a fuel or recycling are some of the options can be applied. Direct incineration of plastics are applied at many plants - in most cases where waste consist of dangerous substances are incinerated because plastics high calorific value helps correct average mixture composition enable operators reaching high enough temperature for combined power and heat generation while most of substances—like PAH, PCB or dioxins—are destroyed. Another path is using low temperature reductive cracking due to pyrolysis process, however the chance having higher concentrate of carcinogen substances in the products are higher since it applies around 400°C during the process."

"Two practical methods for correlating two or more diamond-drill core intersections, using a stereographic projection software are presented. The first may be used to establish if two or more vein intersections are correlative, based on their core angles and diamond-drillhole attitudes. The second method allows prediction of main vein attitudes from numerous intersections, based on a spherical density contouring projection. The methods are suitable for: (1) correlating veins in complex orebodies; (2) ascertaining lateral continuity of ore for reserve estimations; (3) demonstrating the hidden complexity of an orebody; and (4) correlating and interpreting various planar elements.IntroductionModern mineral exploration relies on diamond- drill core data and on the ability of geologists to interpret them. Drill core generally yields unoriented information, unless an expensive orientation device is used. As a consequence, strike and dip of planar elements such as lithological contacts or mineralized veins cannot be determined easily. This is particularly true for blind deposits (covered by thick overburden) and complex orebodies, where field data cannot support drilling interpretations. Such a problem has been addressed previously using two and three diamond drillholes and several solutions were proposed based on trigonometry, and geometric and stereographic projections (Mead, 1921; Wisser, 1932; Fischer, 1941; Stein, 1941; Bucher, 1943; Gilluly, 1944; Addie, 1962; Mills, 1963; Lyons, 1964). However, these solutions are time consuming and not relevant to present day computerized data plots."

"Abstract - The coalbed methane industry has become a prominent source of domestic natural gas, with its technology having evolved over the past 30 years. Whereas most coalbed methane wells are able to produce without major interruption over their economic lives, wells operating in an underground mining area are subject to being mined-through. If mine-through occurs, the productivity of the well is at least compromised, and may even be terminated. The economic consequences of mine-through may be relatively simple if mineral ownership and extraction rights are common for the coal and coalbed methane. However, if ownership is not common and a superior coalbed methane lease exists, the coalbed methane ownership must be compensated for lost production caused by mine-through. This paper presents a relatively straightforward method to calculate the value of the lost production caused by the mine-through. It uses technology from mining and petroleum engineering, as well as simple economics and financial management techniques.Sommaire - L’industrie de la production de méthane houiller est aujourd’hui une source importante de gaz naturel domestique dont la technologie a considérablement évolué au cours des trente dernières années. Bien que la plupart des puits de méthane houiller peuvent être mis en production durant l’entièreté de leur vie utile sans interruption majeure, les puits implantés en périphérie de mines souterraines sont sujets à être recoupés par ces dernières. Un tel recoupement peut compromettre, ou même mettre fin à la production d'un tel puits. Les conséquences économiques du recoupement par une mine souterraine peuvent être relativement simples quand les droits miniers et les droits d’extraction sont détenus en commun pour le charbon et le méthane houiller. Si toutefois ces droits ne sont pas détenus en commun et qu’il y a eu octroi d’une concession de méthane houiller de qualité supérieure, les détenteurs du méthane houiller doivent être compensés pour la perte de production résultant du recoupement par une mine souterraine. Cet article présente une méthode relativement simple pour calculer la valeur des pertes de production suite au recoupement par une mine souterraine. Cette méthode fait appel aux technologies de l’industrie minière et pétrolière ainsi qu’à des techniques simples d’économie et de gestion financière."

A comparison of the amount of minus-28-mesh product produced by a standard grinding test procedure is provided for 45 non-metallic materials. The percentage of product, the weight of product per unit of energy used and the weight of product per mill revolution are shown. The results exhibited excellent reproducibility and demonstrated an accurate comparison of grindability for non-metallic materials.

High production rate and good stability demand the optimization of all phases of electric pig iron smelting. This is important with respect to slag chemistry, which to a large extent regulates the process temperature in electric smelting. Controlled basicity and slag volume. and a satisfactory screen analysis of the reduction material and sinter, are of the utmost importance for smooth furnace operation. Large variations in slag volume and in B/ A and C/Fe ratio will have an influence on the furnace resistance and thus the specific energy development in the furnace, which lead to variable reduction of SiO.. The result will be variable hot -metal quality and un-stable furnace operation.

Man's attempt to conquer the elements largely involves con-trolling the temperature around him. Without having conquered this aspect, his body energy would be consumed in trying to maintain physical comfort, rather than being invested in the explorations which have resulted in man's control over the forces of nature. The indirect methods used to obtain the most agreeable temperature environment were developed because of the natural tendency to strive for increased safety, convenience and comfort. Until the twentieth century, when heat generated by atomic fission became a reality, man's only source of heat, except for that of the sun, came from his discovery of fire.

The merit of reduction-in-area as a criterion of quality in metals is shown to lie in its influence on breaking stress, but the virtue of elongation is not easy to find. In order to assess the value of elongation, either as a measure of quality or as a guide to design, it will be necessary to separate the overall de-formation occurring in tension tests from the localized deformation associated with localized reduction in area. The obstacles to a successful solution of this problem have been shown to be more formidable than is generally appreciated, and a new solution to the problem has been suggested. This solution involves a de-vice by which an electric circuit is broken when the particular value of strain is reached that is to be taken as the point of separation between general and localized deformation. The report presents results from a number of tests on both low-carbon and alloy steels. "Bedding-parallel thrust-hosted gold veins are developed in the Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest goldfield, eastern Transvaal, South Africa. The reefs display a complex history characterized by temporally and spatially overlapping events of similar mineralization and deformation. Recognition of the episodic reactivation of these low angle (5° to 10°) thrust faults implicates high fluid pressures (equalling or exceeding lithostatic pressures). Geochemical constraints limit the amount of fluid-rock interaction and the occurrence of transgressive mineralization within the Archaean granitoid basement suggests that the high pressure fluids originated at depth beneath the Transvaal Basin.Similarities exist between gold deposits of Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest and Telfer, Western Australia as well as Passagem de Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil. All deposits are sub-parallel to the enclosing bedding which is shallowly inclined. Furthermore, they are also hosted by contractional deformational structures and are clearly epigenetic in origin."

The mineral industry has seen many significant changes in the past decade. Increasingly, it has responded to unanticipated pressures and demands with a variety of voluntary initiatives. Yet there is still much to do. Mining now takes place in a different context than was the case in the past. Socio-economic, political and environmental considerations must now be integrated into traditional mining systems. This process of integration needs to involve industry, governments, academics, communities and other stakeholders to design a new approach to mining, one that can be fostered through interdisciplinary links and holistic strategies. This paper considers the meaning of sustainability in the context of the Canadian mining industry and explores the need for a broader vision for the mining industry. The role of technology is then analyzed and related to an initiative recently taken by Canadian universities to develop a national network for interdisciplinary research into sustainable mining, CaSM.

"IntroductionTHE WORLD-WIDE search for iron ore has been vastly accelerated during the past fifteen years .and Canada is playing a most prominent role in this prospecting boom. During this period, the search for .and development of iron ore deposits in Canada bas proven eminently successful and there is every indication that exploration will continue to be active for many years.This paper has been prepared primarily for the information of those who have bad little or no experience in iron ore exploration. For convenience, it is divided into three parts: ( 1) a brief discussion of the marketing of iron ores, with special reference to Canadian production; (2) a summary of the main features to be considered when prospecting for or evaluating a potential iron ore deposit; and (3) an outline of the methods and procedures used in the search for the direct-shipping iron ores in the Quebec•-Labrador iron ore field.The Iron Ore MarketDue to the tremendous tonnages of high-grade direct-shipping iron ore indicated in the iron ore fields of the Quebec-Labrador and Steep •Rock areas, it might be assumed that there would have been a sharp decline in iron ore prospecting in this country. On the contrary, the development of these two major fields, which must be classed among the world's greatest, has been responsible for much of the current activity. The search for high and medium grade magnetite deposits is being• conducted in many parts of the country and a number of these have reached the development stage. Characterization of second phase particles is important with regard to their influence on mechanical properties of materials. Analytical electron microscopy offers the possibility to achieve complete characterization of inclusions. Complete characterization of inclusions means quantitative evaluation of their chemistry and the stereological parameters. A characterization technique based on integrated microscopy and involving scanning electron microscopy, image analysis and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry is presented. A discussion of the use of transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy is also presented for the characterization of very small particles and compounds (>100 nm).

Gypsum was first exploited as ?a commercial proposition in this province by the Union Mining Company which, in 1900 opened quarries on the east shore of Lake Manitoba, near the present site of Gypsumville. This company established a mill at the head of Portage Bay on the lake, and the manufactured plaster was carried by the companies boats to McArthur's siding on the Whitemouth river near Westbourne, Man., from which point it was distributed. In 1904 a reorganization took place and the Manitoba Gypsum Company Limited bought out the original company, and operated the original mill for about one year when it was destroyed by fire. There were many factors which rendered the operation of a mill at the quarries very difficult; lack of rail transportation for bringing in supplies, and the impossibility of local power development made manufacturing costs very high. Satisfactory distribution could not be affected because of water transportation and poor terminal facilities at McArthur's siding. For these reasons the new mill was built at Winnipeg, where cheaper power and better distributing facilities permitted the industry being placed in a better position. The company continued to bring the gypsum rock by steamer to Totogan, from which point it was transported by rail to Winnipeg. This period was one of steady expansion as the product became better known and more universally accepted as a wall finishing material. Unfortunately, in 1909, this new mill was destroyed by fire, causing a serious set-back to the company, at a time when the steady growth of the western market gave every promise of the industry being placed on a profitable basis.
