The utilization of natural deposits of salt is one of the oldest industries in Alberta. In 1820, Sir James Richardson visited Salt river, and in the same year D. W. Harmon states chat "clown Slave river, there are several places, where almost any quantity of excellent dean white salt may be taken, with as much ease as sand along the seashore. From these places the greater part of the northwest is supplied with this valuable article". This reference is to the salt chat occurs around springs on Salt river at the northern boundary of the Province. This and other occurrences will be described later in this paper. It is not on account of the development of salt and gypsum in Alberta chat this paper has been prepared, but rather to draw attention to the widespread distribution of salt-bearing and gypsum-bearing rocks, and to the stratigraphic importance of these rocks . The origin of the deposits of salt, gypsum, anhydrite, and dolomite is discussed, and the economic significance of these minerals is considered. There is no salt production reported from Alberta in 1928.

"For the past eight years Paques has been engaged in the development and installation of treatment systems based on biotechnological processes to remove sulfur compounds from water, air and gaseous streams. Metal and sulfate can be removed from mine waters using two biological steps:1. Sulfate reducing bacteria convert sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The H2S reacts with the dissolved metals to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates.2. Sulfide oxidizing bacteria convert excess H2S to elemental sulfur.Paques has designed and installed a groundwater treatment system for the Budelco zinc refinery in the Netherlands to remove metals and sulfate as described above. The system has been operating since May 1992 treating a flow of 5000 m3/d. A test program, utilizing a large scale pilot plant, will commence in November 1995 at a copper mine in the U.S.A. to remediate groundwater contaminated with sulfate and heavy metals. Biological reactor performance and selective metal recovery will be studied. Sulfur dioxide (S02) can be removed from fluegas using a combination of scrubber technology and the two biological steps. The end product is elemental sulfur. A commercial size biological desulfurization plant has been in operation since July 1994 treating 50,000 Nm3/h of fluegas. Sulfide can be removed from mining waters or anaerobic wetlands using a THIOPAQ® Sulfide Oxidizing reactor.lntroductionSulfur can be present in various water and gaseous streams in a mining operation. In many cases the sulfur compounds have to be removed because of toxicity, corrosive properties and contribution to acid rain. Mine waters can contain dissolved heavy metals. An efficient way to remove dissolved metals removal is the precipitation as metal sulfides. Paques has developed and installed treatment systems based on biotechnological processes to remove sulfur compounds from water, air and gaseous streams. These treatment systems biologically convert sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) which can be used in heavy metal precipitation. Excess H2S is biologically converted to elemental sulfur. This paper provides an overview of these newly developed biotechnological treatment systems."

"Worldwide, metal mines are going deeper. For example, in Canada there are six such mechanized mines planning production at 3000 m (10 000 ft). Working at such depths challenges all aspects of mining including the provision of ventilation to supply an equitable working climate for personnel and machinery.This paper explores the overall challenges of supplying ventilation in Canada’s deepest mines and how the volumes required could be minimized. This is essential because it must be remembered that ventilation and refrigeration are not only costly items to supply, but the magnitude of their cost is also very sensitive to the volume supplied. For the primary ventilation system this is obvious because of the cubic relationship between volume and cost.In deep mines, the main function of ventilation is the removal of heat transferred from the strata and generated by the mining machinery, and the air volumes supplied are designed accordingly. The second consideration is the removal of other pollutants that could be harmful to humans such as diesel and explosive fumes. However, the need for ventilation at its present design levels could be reduced. This paper discusses the implications of such technologies as: tele-remote mining and alternatives to diesel equipment on the magnitude of the volume supplied; ventilationon- demand which recognizes ventilation as a costly and limited resource; plus other aspects, such as the benefits of controlled recirculation, local cooling, and possibly heat rejection back to the strata to gain further advantage from new developments.Furthermore, this paper advances the need to be able to design ventilation systems more cost effectively and how such new advances as process simulators can be used in conjunction with ventilation simulators to explore the diverse options that could affect the air volumes required and provide more realistic economic data upon which to base design decisions."

ABSTRACT - The Bathurst-Newcastle district, a subcircular area approximately 50 km in diameter, contains 37 massive-sulfide Zn-Pb-Cu deposits that have defined tonnages, and has 58 additional significant occurrences. The largest deposit is Brunswick No . 12, with total reserves (including past production) of 148 million tonnes grading about 12.50% combined Pb-Zn. The deposits/ occurrences are spatially associated with a felsic volcanic pile that contains a significant sedimentary component. In the vicinity of the Brunswick deposits the pile is divisible into lower and upper sequences. The lower is characterized by megacrystic rhyolite (QFAS) and coarse- to fine-grained quartz ( ± feldspar) wackes and/or tuffites (QAS); the upper sequence is characterized by aphyric to sparsely porphyritic rhyolites (HWR), micro-breccias, and acid hyaloclastites with interbedded dark gray sedimentary rocks. A greenish gray to dark gray siltstone (GGS) separates the two sequences and hosts the sulfide deposits. Lithogeochemistry of !east altered samples shows that the QFAS and HWR have an igneous character, whereas the QAS and GGS have a sedimentary sig­ nature. The two types can be distinguished on the basis of total alkalies (Na2O + K2O) versus SiO2/Al2O3, and Ti02 versus Fe/(Fe+ Mg). Some trace elements, such as Sr and Y, also help differentiate the two types. The QFAS differs from HWR by having higher La/Yb ratios but lower Zr and Th. The Bathurst deposits do not show a close spatial association with rhyolites but rather are stratiform bodies (lacking clastic textures) within fine-grained sedimentary rocks. The scarcity of barite and other sulfates indicates that there was little mixing between the metal­ bearing fluids and cold seawater. High Fe/(Fe+ Mg) ratios in chlorites also indicate the fluids did not contain a significant seawater component. These features and the large size of many deposits suggest that the deposits formed from metal-rich pore waters that were released catastrophically from an acquifer in the footwall stratigraphy.

The Cigar Lake project will develop the world’s second largest high-grade uranium deposit. The Cigar Lake Phase 1 orebody contains approximately 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7% U3O8. The mine, to be operated by Cameco Corporation, will use a unique water jet boring mining method to cut previously frozen ore. A distinctive ore handling design is required to handle the highgrade ore slurry exiting the mining machines. The ore will be crushed and ground underground, with the ore slurry then pumped to surface. Loaded into purpose-designed containers on tractor-trailer units, the ore slurry will be trucked to Cogema Resources Incorporated’s McClean Lake mill. McClean Lake will leach all of the ore. Forty-three percent of the resulting uranium solution will remain at McClean Lake for processing into yellowcake. The other 57% of the uranium solution will be shipped to Cameco’s Rabbit Lake mill for processing into yellowcake there. Detailed design for the Cigar Lake project is now underway. Barring regulatory or market delays, production could start up as soon as early 2006.

"Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited is located at Joutel in North-Western Québec. The mine is about four miles north-west from the town on the left bank of the Harricana River. The present mining is 1,800 feet deep with an extensive geological development below this level.HISTORY The development of the ore body started sometimes in 1967 and then the operation ceased in 1969 and again reopened in 1973 due to higher prices of gold. During these periods of active development, a considerable metallurgical research has been done by different laboratories and research and design companies.The original capacities of the Mill differed as much as 30%. So did the concept of the ore treatment. The original design of the mill was for 200 TPD of ore with straight cyanidation. The problems with low gold extraction, high reagent consumption and poor filtration resulted in a decrease of the expected mill output to an initial 550 TPD with gold recoveries in the order of 40 to 60%.Although the studies and research work done on the ore varied, all of them had a common conclusion: a very fine grind is needed to expose gold. The mining method (sub-level blast hole mining) now provides the ore that differs from that on which the metallurgical test work was conducted and the original capacity calculations had been done.These variations in the concept consequently led to the conclusion that the size of gold is a determining factor for the process.Kilborn Engineering provided the original design with the Leslie Eng¬ineering completing the design. The metallurgical test work has been done by the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources, Lakefield Research of Canada, Kilborn Engineering and Sidam Incorporated.The new flotation section with secondary grinding has been designed and put into operation by the company in December 1975 with the results yet to be evaluated."

"Potash processing in Canada commenced on a commercial scale in 1962. Over the last 25 years it has grown into a world-class industry with many advances in processing technology. As it is a relatively young industry, many more advances can be expected. Unlike much of the mineral production in Canada, potash is sold as a range of finished products. The processing involves potash recovery and finishing in about equal amounts in terms of the effort of processing. Environmental concerns are not insignificant and are being treated uniquely in some areas. Research and development efforts, while not carried out on a large scale, are attacking industry problems on a wide front.THE INDUSTRYThe Canadian potash industry has 12 producing mines, 10 in Saskatchewan and 2 in New Brunswick. The total productive capacity of the industry is 18,300,000 tonnes of products per year. At capacity, the industry 1•ill process the equivalent of about 53,000,000 tonnes of ore per year. Plants range in size from 8,000 tonnes to 24,000 tonnes of feed per operating day. In product terms this is from 2,500 to 3,500 tonnes of products per day.Of the 12 mines, 11 are conventional underground mining operations with potash recovery principally by flotation supplemented by crystallization and one is a solution mine where mining is achieved by dissolving the potash and salt in underground caverns and then treating the solution in an evaporator/ crystallizer circuit. In all plants there is commonality of unit operation in the product screening and compaction sections. There are three principal ores being treated in the conventional plants. "The ultimate aim of a mine design is to determine the development work involved and resources required by adopting one or more specific alternatives. A part of the process is the production of mining plans/designs, an outline of the amount of work and costs involved as well as a prediction of the revenues expected. The paper aims to examine these aspects of mine design using the computer models developed. These models are capable of designing and performing economic analysis for one or more stopes for a continuous orebody. IntroductionTatiya and Allen (1987) have described ’defining stope boundaries using a computer.’ Using the stope boundaries defined or even hypothetical ones, algorithms have been prepared to design the layouts of the following stoping methods: 1. sublevel stoping (longitudinal as well as transverse);2. DTH (Down-the-hole) stoping; and3. flat back cut and fill stoping with posts and pillars.Tatiya (1989) presented this work at the 21st symposium on the application of computers and operations research in the mineral industry (APCOM). Economic analysis of a stope is the additional feature incorporated with these algorithms.The system has been tested by an economic analysis of the three stoping methods modeled for a small portion of a deposit of a copper mining complex. The deposits at this mining complex form lenses of varying shapes and sizes, having low copper content. These chalcopyrite lenses are steeply inclined with a thickness in the range of 5 m to 60 m. The strata are competent and suitable for underground mining.In different sections of the mines different sets of equipment are used to perform the basic unit operations. Some of the ore handling levels in the mines are trackless, the rest are tracked."

"The operation of the Louvicourt Mine will have to rely on stringent grade control and on the optimization of the amount of blocked ore made available per given development effort. All of the above being necessary to obtain the highest throughput at the lowest mining cost.To assist in achieving these objectives, the need for production of a competent fill with short curing time was recognized early by the project partners. As well, operating costs associated with the selected method should be as low as possible while meeting the technical criteria.A feasibility study comparing filling methods showed potential benefits in all aspects of the paste fill use, except for its higher capital costs and increased operational complexity. This last consideration was tackled by the conservative design approach adopted in the flowsheet development of the paste fill plant.Since commissioning of the plant has just been completed at this time, the paper will focus on the feasibility study and its background, the design of the plant and testwork results at pilot plant and plant scale.RésuméLe succès de l 'opération de Louvicourt Mine dépendra d' un contrôle serré des teneurs du minerai et de la maximisation de la quantité de minerai développée par effort uni ta ire. "Industrial-grade limestone is found in both the Lower Silurian La Vieille Formation and Upper Silurian LaPlante Formation of the Chaleurs Group in northern New Brunswick. Currently, between 150 000 and 200 000 tonnes of limestone are produced per year from the proximal facies of the LaPlante Formation at the Sormany quarry of Elmtree Resources Ltd., located west of Bathurst.The proximal facies of the LaPlante Formation was deposited on the margins of tectonically uplifted Ordovician terranes. This facies comprises stromatoporoidal-algal bindstone intercalated with wackestone, packstone, and floatstone in variable proportions. The distal facies comprises calcareous shale and minor limestone deposited deeper offshore.Folding and faulting related to Middle Devonian Acadian tectonism have caused an increase in the apparent thickness of the limestone sequences, especially adjacent to the regional Rocky Brook-Millstream fault. Structural and stratigraphic observations indicate that some of the limestone bodies in the area have been tectonically displaced from their site of deposition.A variety of prospecting techniques was used to locate new limestone resources, including geological mapping, airborne and ground electromagnetic surveys, and satellite remote sensing. Clastic rock units above and below the LaPlante Formation have distinctive properties that help to trace the intervening limestone along strike. Because of water-saturated glacial cover, thick vegetation, and the small size of targets, airborne geophysical methods did not prove effective in delineating limestone beds, but aeromagnetic surveys helped map the underlying clastic unit. The remote-sensing data and especially high-resolution digital elevation models helped in identification of karst topography related to limestone."

"The Navan zinc-lead ore deposit (70 million tonnes) is hosted principally (97%) by the Meath Formation (Lower Carboniferous, Courceyan, Navan Group), comprising a lower, mainly carbonate mudstone unit, the Stackallan Member, and an upper grainstone-dominated unit. TheStackallan Member, about 60 m thick, comprises about 35 peritidal cycles including an oolitic grain-stone interval. Grainstones forming the upper part of the formation, about 150 m thick, comprise at least six shallowing-upward ramp cycles. Emergence horizons are indicated by subaerial dissolution surfaces, in situ breccias, and a single palaeosol.Most dolomitization at Navan is con?ned to the Meath Formation. The linear dolomite body,trending NE-SW, has a ?attened, laterally limited, tabular geometry in cross-section, suggesting that dolomitizing ?uids initially rose vertically, cross-cutting stratigraphic and sedimentological bound-aries, although ?uid ?ow was subsequently controlled by these features.Three stages of dolomitization are indicated by textural relationships, cathodoluminescence (CL),oxygen isotopes, and ?uid inclusion data. Stage 1 crystals, with generally dully luminescing cores and up to six overlying subsidiary zones, are the main replacive phase. Crystal surfaces are commonly corroded and overlain by bright stage 2 rhombs (which also form new nuclei lining molds and fractures). Three subsets of zones are present in stage 2 crystals: bright, non-luminescent, and dull; these are locally separated by additional corrosion surfaces. Stage 3 comprises relatively large baroque crystals, generally dully luminescent but with up to seven sub-zones. Isotopic and ?uid inclusion data suggest growth of successive stages from waters which became progressively hotter(60°–160°C).The distribution of the ores follows the dolomite trend. Ores were precipitated between Stages1 and 2 of dolomite growth, following Stage 2, and also during the nucleation and growth of Stage3 crystals. Dolomitization and mineralization appear to have been temporally and genetically related. The cyclic sedimentation of the host rocks, which accentuates lithological and petrographical contrasts between depositional units, controlled dolomitization. The relationship between dolomitization and mineralization, which is closely associated with faults, provides powerful exploration criteria. The recognition of these features in limestones elsewhere in the Irish ore ?eld may point toward unrecognized zinc-lead prospects."

"Denison Mines Limited has been processing uranium ore in the Elliot Lake area since May of 1957. The ore body is located i11 the Huronion sediments on the north limb of the Quirke Lake syncline. Minerals of metallurgical significance are brannerite, uraninite and monazite. Gangue minerals include quartz, chlorite, sericite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and rutile. Silica content of the ore is greater than 75 % and pyrite-pyrrhotite content around 7 %. Specific gravity of the ore is 2.75.The Denison flowsheet is based on sulphuric acid leaching to extract the uranium values from the ore followed by liquid-solid separation to wash the uranium-bearing solution from the barren ore. The resultant pregnant solution is concentrated and purified by ion exchange followed by two-stage precipitation with ammonia to produce an ammonium yellow-cake.Elliot Lake ores require high acid concentrations and high temperatures to extract the uranium from brannerite and monazite. Uraninite will leach at low acid concentrations as long as oxiclizing conditions exist. The whole ore must be treated so that these conditions do exist.This paper provides a description of the leaching process equipment as originally installed and major changes in that equipment to date. Process control refinements to economically improve extraction are also discussed."

Tooth-wear on mining shovels requires continuous monitoring. Worn teeth impede excavation performance, increase energy usage, and increase the risk of lost or broken teeth and adapters. A machine-vision-based automated tooth-wear monitoring system is presented. The system employs a rugged boom or stick-mounted camera to capture images of the shovel teeth. An onboard computer processes the images in real-time to determine the length of each tooth. The current wear state is available via a network-accessible log for on-demand status updates. By continuously recording tooth length changes over time, the logs can be used to estimate wear rates and patterns, permitting comparisons between different G.E.T. configurations, operator behaviour patterns, or material types. This detailed, quantitative data permits site-specific optimizations to wear packages and maintenance scheduling. Automating wear monitoring offers the crucial wear information necessary to minimize maintenance costs and reduce unscheduled downtime. A 37-day field trial in a copper-gold mine demonstrated the ability of the system to measure tooth lengths, compute wear rates, and detect differences in tooth wear based on their position on the bucket.

Sindesar Khurd Mine is situated in Rajasthan, India, and operated by Hindustan Zinc Ltd, under Vedanta Group. The base metal mine is high in reserves of Lead, Zinc and silver and has been producing since 2007 with initial production of 0.3 mtpa. Recently the mine has gained prominence as a base metal underground mine in introduction of latest mining techniques and achieving high production at lowest costs. The promising Lead-Zinc reserves of Sindesar Khurd Mine (SKM) and high-tech exploration adopted by Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), (Vedanta Group), raising the reserves and resources from a meager 9 Mt (1997) to 81 Mt (2012), has prompted HZL management to ramp up the mine production from 0.3 mtpa (2006-07) to 2 mtpa by 2013-14 with ambitious plans to reach 3.5mtpa subsequently (presently largest underground metal mine in India). The complete trackless system underground mine, recently equipped with latest leaky feeder communication system (unique in India), utilize modern drilling, mucking and hauling equipment aided with various utility/service vehicles. Excavation optimization and quality recovery maximization from the open and post filled stoping methods, continual expert analysis and feedback from International consultants like AMC (Australia) and SRK (UK), and involvement of renowned bodies in management excellence, have lead the mine towards highest productivity and lowest mine operating cost, earning the mine a prominent place in the global base metal industry. The paper deals with how the various challenges in mine planning and designing, mine development, operator skill, equipment introduction and maintenance, expertise availability, provide training and exposure to officials, prompt and effective communication/service, control of ground vibrations, maintain ventilation standards etc are faced in attaining high operational excellence and thus attain a record mine output/man shift (OMS) of 14 ton/man shift with targets to reach 20 ton/man /shift. Scientific designing using 2D/3D numerical mine-modeling techniques, faster stope sequencing with introduction of paste filling ( first time in India),latest leaky feeder communication system, control ground vibration to stringent standards using electronic delay system, faster raising techniques using raise borers to enhance development and ventilation, cavity scanners to monitor large stope voids, fast shaft sinking at 100 m/month(Chinese expertise) and maintaining adequate ventilation with close software monitoring are some of the highlights discussed in the paper towards achieving the targets.

IT IS most appropriate that this first Memorial Lecture should be given in the Province of Quebec, near the site of the first metallurgical industry in Canada. At La Forge, about seven miles north of Three Rivers, iron was produced in 1783. We are told that the early settlers obtained most of their iron-ware -stoves, kettles, axes and ploughshares -from this smelter, with its foundry and forge. The Canadian copper industry also had its beginnings in Quebec when, nearly 100 years later, in the 1880's, several small copper smelters were erected in the Eastern Townships. Later, in 1899, Canada's first aluminum smelter was built at Shawinigan. From these small beginnings has grown a vast metals industry, the export value of its products being only exceeded by that of our forest products -newsprint, pulp-wood and lumber. As we are not a large country in terms of population, our domestic capacity to consume is often small in relation to our developed capacity to produce.

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. We investigate the relationship between corporate financial performance (CFP) and environmental and social performance (CSP) in a sample (n=165) of large, publicly traded U.S. mining and oil and gas firms. Using optimally scaled principal components analysis to generate aggregate measures of CSP strengths and concerns, we find higher concerns are related to higher volatility of unexpected earnings and discount rates. Furthermore, these earnings shocks are more likely to be negative as concerns increase. Decomposing this relationship shows that negative environmental performance dominates proactive environmental management as a driver of unexpected earnings, but proactive community efforts increase the magnitude of earnings shocks. We document some evidence of the strategic use of CSR, with those firms that have greater risk investing more proactively in CSR.

"Gondwana coal deposits are widespread and are known to occur in four continents. They are present in Brazil, India, South Africa, and Australia. From coal petrographic examinations and a detailed literature survey, it is interpreted that Gondwana coals are present also in Canada and the United States. Laurasia, or Northern Hemisphere, coals occur in the United States, Canada, and Europe. They form the main coal producing fields of the world. Megascopically, Gondwana coals have a uniform, micro-banded appearance, with a dull lustre; Laurasian coals are bright and have distinct bands of vitrain and clarain. Petrographically, Gondwana coals, compared to Laurasian coals, are lower in vitrinite, but higher in inertinite, particularly in semifusinite. Mineral matter averages 16% in Gondwana coals and 5.7% in Northern Hemisphere coals.Gondwana coals are characterized by thick seams that terminate through lithification (Versteinerung), whereby coal passes laterally into shale. Laurasian coal seams are thinner and terminate by splitting and digitation.Vitrinite/inertinite ratio data indicate deposition of the Gondwana coals in dry marshes under strong oxidizing conditions. The Laurasian coals originated in wet marshes in a reducing environment. As deduced from fossil plants and fossil spores, temperate and near arctic conditions apply for the Gondwana coals. A tropical and subtropical climate is indicated for the Laurasian deposits. The Gondwana coals were formed under allochthonous conditions. They derived from vegetation that drifted into the peat bogs. The Laurasian coals are autochthonous and originated from vegetation that grew and was buried in the peat bogs. The Gondwana coals are Late Carboniferous and Early Permian. The Laurasian coals are entirely Late Carboniferous."
