The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.

Magnetic separator operation in the recovery of magnetite in heavy medium circuits was studied by conducting a series of tests on a full size wet drum magnetic separator.The significant operational variables were found to be feed pan clearance, squeeze pan clearance, dry magnetite feed rate and separator drum speed. With feed and squeeze pan clearances optimized for typical primary separator operation, magnetite loss and concentrate specific gravity were found to be related in a regular manner to dry magnetite feed rate at any drum speed.A two component model of magnetite loss is proposed, relating total magnetite loss to losses in the feed pan and squeeze pan zones. The experimental curves relating magnetite loss to dry magnetite feed rate at the various drum speeds are interpreted in terms of the two component model.The magnetite particle size distribution in the separator was also examined. The tailings magnetite was found to be finer than the feed magnetite only when the dry magnetite feed rate was low, or immediately following the introduction of a new charge of magnetite when the separator was fed at an intermediate dry magnetite feed rate.

More and more, today’s mining geologists are asked to identify and create 3D value domains for multidisciplinary usage: grade definition, geometallurgical performance and geotechnical characteristics, to name a few. Often, that domain shape is the result of an assumed or conjectured value as a surrogate to a set of conditions (eg kaolinite-rich, sericite alteration). Would it not be instead better to create the respective domain through identification of a consistent quantifiable geologically-based pattern as its basis?Critical to the identification of patterns is the transformation of 3D point data into a model by a method that uses few, if any, preselected thresholds. Too often we complicate the reviews of the modelled data by prejudging the value range of interest. And when we do revert to 2D views (ie sections and plans), we tend to only examine numbers or line traces. These hinder and obscure identification of geological patterns particularly in deposits of complex geology. Instead, these data should be looked at with minimal prejudgment and interrogated in 2D space by one of the best and most eye-catching display types: filled contour plots.Here we present two different processes that transform data with minimal preselection into formats that allow for pattern recognition by filled contour plots. These are: probability assisted constrained kriging (PACK) and multiple interval interpolant formation (Aranz Geo’s Leapfrog® software). The former creates a 3D model of probabilities on a threshold value; the latter creates numerous (=10), regularly-binned 3D interval interpolants. The results of each method are examined as filled contours over numerous sections or plans. Any distinct patterns are quickly discerned thereby readily identifying the best value to base the creation of a domain. These processes therefore provide a way to marry recent advances in software tools with what is supposed a geologist’s core skill: pattern recognition.CITATION:Juras, S, McKinley, S and Uludag, E, 2017. The Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek prospects occur in an area of ~3.0 km by 2.5 km (~7.5 km2) in the Hauraki goldfield. The prospects are hosted by andesitic to dacitic flows, autoclastic breccias and localised pyroclastic and air fall deposits. Jubilee and Sovereign prospects lie along the northern and southern parts of the Waitekauri Fault, respectively, whereas Scotia is located ~1 km to the E, and Jasper Creek a further ~1.2 km to the ENE. Wall rocks are typically intensely altered, although the degree of alteration becomes more variable east of Scotia and at Jasper Creek. Alteration minerals include quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite, smectite and calcite. Several of these minerals have distributions that show distinct zonation with adularia most abundant at Sovereign and Jasper Creek, but restricted to shallow levels at Scotia. Illite occurs throughout Sovereign and Jubilee plus the western margin of Scotia where it grades into interstratified illite-smectite; smectite predominates at Jasper Creek. Veins are uncommon and typically narrow, but show distinct zonations. Quartz veins are more abundant at Sovereign and Jubilee, whereas calcite veins are more abundant at Scotia and Jasper Creek. Laumontite veins occur at Scotia, and rare clinoptilolite, mordenite and stilbite veinlets with calcite occur at Jasper Creek. Fluid inclusion in quartz and calcite homogenised between 141¦ to 272¦C and trapped a dilute solution with an apparent salinity of less than 2.6 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Homogenisation temperatures are hottest at Sovereign (average 241¦C) and Jubilee (average 239¦C), cooler at Scotia (average 204¦C) and coolest at Jasper Creek (average 162¦C). Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest the water table was 680 m to 750 m above sea level at Sovereign and Jubilee, 450 m at Scotia and 225 m at Jasper Creek. The current data suggest three scenarios that can explain why Sovereign and Jubilee are deep and hot, whereas Jasper Creek is cool, shallow and marginal; 1.   some or all of the prospects may represent separate overlapping hydrothermal system, 2.   a high-relief hydrothermal system on the side of volcano with an inclined water table and outflow towards Jasper Creek, and 3.   a low-relief hydrothermal system that has been either tilted or block faulted with greatest uplift and erosion to the west.

The limit of pressure to which an underground dam may with safety be subjected, is a question that-as far as the writer knows has not received the same attention from authorities on engineering construction, or practical mining, that has been accorded to questions on which the design and strength of other structures or machines in connection with a mine are based. That dams may, under certain conditions, be constructed to resist water under great pressure is a known fact. But the difficulty of demonstrating beforehand that any proposed structure of this kind will withstand the pressure and be effective is, owing to the indeterminate nature of some of the risks to be provided against, very great. In the present state of our knowledge it may almost be laid down as a rule, that a dam of this kind should not be undertaken where grave consequences would attend failure until experience of structures where the physical conditions are similar, but where there are no such risks, has given assurance that such work would stand.In Mines and Minerals for May, 1900, there is published a paper by Mr. James McNaughton describing the construction of three underground dams in the iron mining district of Michigan.The first of these was put in to hold back a flow of 750 gallons per minute, which when pent up created a pressure of 276 pounds per square inch, showing that the height of the sustained column was about 635 ·feet. The design of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill based comminution circuits for the treatment of competent ores, similar to those at Geita and Boddington, involves the same process of sample selection, test work, data analysis and data modelling/interpretation as that used for 'average' competency ores. However, over the past couple of years a number of issues have arisen that are common to the design of circuits for the comminution of 'highly' competent ores. The impact of these issues on project viability is generally more pronounced when treating hard ores than average to soft ores due to the greater impact on capital and operating costs. The issues encountered have included: standard test procedures have been modified; test equipment has worn or been damaged; different procedures yield different data and varying interpretation; and modelling and empirical calculations have been based on poor benchmarks, or used incorrectly in the case of JKSimMet, yielding misleading outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to present, discuss and clarify some of the issues associated with conducting test work and designing comminution circuits for the treatment of 'highly' competent ores in order to reduce thelevel of conflict arising from interpretation and application of test work data. Specifically, the issues associated with the bond crushing (impact) and rod work indices measurement, the various SAG mill specific energy tests, and the interpretation of the resulting data will be discussed in the context of case studies.

The expansion of hydrometallurgical operations, declining ore grades and upwardly spiralling production increases the demand for fresh and recycled water with low levels of contaminants. The minerals industry is also increasingly being forced both by regulatory and cost pressures to reduce the amount of liquid waste they produce. This requires a strong focus on waste reduction by recycling, regeneration and reuse. However, these measures are often not enough in arid countries for a forward progress and expansion of their mining activities.   It is often the case that in the arid and semi-arid countries the only available water is either sea water or underground (brackish to hypersaline) saline waters. Brackish waters can be desalted at a reasonable cost but the desalination of highly saline waters is challenging and expensive.   There are emerging reports that sea water and in some cases hypersaline underground waters are now used by various mining industries as process water. This study explores the possibility of the use of sea water in various mineral processing and hydrometallurgical processes and briefly discusses the benefits and problems related to the use of saline waters at the mine and mill site. Several cases studies and preliminary laboratory test results are presented.

It has been almost a decade since the release of the International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM) Health and Safety Critical Control Management: Good Practice Guide (2015a). During this time the ICMM member companies, along with many others across industry, have been busy designing, deploying and enhancing their own critical control management (CCM) programs. So, what have we learnt? This paper discusses the scope, application and learnings from the implementation of CCM within the mining industry. What’s going well? What are the common challenges? What are the opportunities to strengthen the approach? What are the threats to successful implementation? The paper draws on the author’s experience as one of the key contributors to the development of the CCM Good Practice Guide and an adviser to many mining companies, including six of the ICMM members. The paper focuses on the practical (operational) application of CCM and the cycle of identifying, defining, implementing, verifying and improving critical controls at the frontline. The paper also includes a discussion on the safety performance of the ICMM member companies over the past decade and provides a recommendation for how CCM can be incorporated into a more proactive model to measure safety performance. The paper concludes with practical recommendations that mining companies, regardless of their CCM maturity, can consider as they look ahead. They are supplemented by three additional recommendations for consideration at the industry level.

The centrifugal elevator invented and patented by the writer is designed for the purpose of conveying the tailings of a gold dredge to such a distance that it shall not impede the dredging opperations. Formerly this was usually accomplished by means of a belt of buckets travelling round a ladder set at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, but this meant heavy wear and tear on the travelling buckets and the tumblers actuating them. The centrifugal elevator throws the tailings through the air to the required height and distance and it is manifest that during their flight from the elevator to the heap there is absolutely no wear and tear, only the attraction of gravity and the resistance of the air has to be overcome. All then there is left to he considered is how to throw the stuff with the minimun of prower and wear on the elevator.The elevator consists of a cam-shaped steel casting with a disc of mild steel plate on either side: These side plates project a few inches beyond the tips of the beaters, in order to prevent odd stones from straying in an undesired direction; they serve also to prevent extra large stones from reaching the beaters, for they slide off the rims into the water.

IN a mine with any considerable output the economical handling and transport of ore underground is a matter of prime importance, and in the design or lay-out of a trucking system the question of what form the points and crossings are to take should be one of the first considered. Trucks may be moved from one line of rails to another by the following means: by flat sheets, with which may be coupled turn-tables, or by points and crossings. The latter class may be further divided into fixed and movable points.Flat sheets and turn-tables, owing to the time and skill needed by the trucker in using them, are seldom of great value with large tonnages, unless for purely temporary work, and the choice narrows down to one between fixed and movable points andcrossings. Both systems have their disadvantages - movable points being liable to jamb with dirt and get out of order, whilst with fixed points trucks may sometimes run over the points and capsize, or go on to the wrong line, though this is not of frequent occurrence. On the other hand. the fixed points are simple, easily laid, and strong, and there is no necessity for the trucker to work any levers, the truck being guided on to its new direction by screwing.Cast-iron points and crossings were first introduced into the North mine during the opening-up of the 950-ft. level, and the first arrangement was designed for a double turn-out in the main crosscut. Since then both the points and crossings have beenmodified several times, and it may be interesting to briefly outline the various forms through which they have passed, showing the reasons for the retention of some features and the rejection of others.

Approximately 42 t of mercury were produced from Puhipuhi from the late nineteenth century until the end of World War II, with no significant gold or silver production. Sinter, eruption breccias and veins, mined for mercury at Puhipuhi and essentially barren of gold, are inferred in many geological models to represent the surficial levels of adularia-sericite style low sulfidation gold-silver systems. These systems may contain economic gold-silver mineralisation at depth. Conceptual geological models have been employed at Puhipuhi in the search for buried gold mineralisation. Homestake Mining utilised a McLaughlin model for exploration from 1982 to 1987, targeting mainly the vicinity of the sinter deposits. From 1987 to 1989 BHP sought deeper structurally controlled gold mineralisation within the basement greywackes, utilising models derived from studies of Round Mountain, USA and Hishikari, Japan. Macraes Mining Company Limited have accessed the previous work and applied a conceptual geological which invokes a north-south structural control for the emplacement of high-level felsic intrusions at depth. Dextral movement on these structures associated with oblique convergence facilitated the formation of a pull-apart basin in which lacustrine sediments overlie basement greywackes and are in tum overlain by Pliocene basalts. Continued activation of the NS structures created a series of inferred NE-trending dilational structures, which are targeted as fluid upflow centres for the surficial outflows. Upflows occur as eruption breccias (e.g., Plumduff) and outflow as silica sinters (eg Mt Mitchell, Williams) which are also partly obscured by the basalt cover. Argillic alteration and mercury mineralisation occur at elevated crustal levels (eg Puhipuhi mine). Modelling from structure and alteration zonations have targeted a fluid upflow in the vicinity of Bush Hill, which was not accessed by previous workers. This target was subsequently supported by surface geology and multi-element soil geochemistry.

A series of tests was carried out on one of the rock-pebble milling circuits treating complex nickel ores at Kambalda Nickel Operations of Western Mining Corporation. A mathematical model to describe the behaviour of a 508 mm hydrocyclone was developed from the data.A "flat" reduced efficiency curve was observed for the system. This was attributed to a marked difference in the specific gravity of different size fractions of the feed. A modified approach in describing the shape or the reduced efficiency curve resulted in accurate prediction of the hydrocyclone performance.

A rotating disc of precipitant zinc in a single stage flow reactor was used to study the effects of deposit mass on the reaction kinetics of copper cementing on to zinc from dilute aqueous solutions.The reaction rate is controlled by external mass transport and the mass transfer coefficient (relative to the original precipitant area) is dependent on the quantity of deposit present. For deposit masses up to about 0·3 mg/cm2 the mass transfer coefficient (first order rate constant) is that expected for the counter-diffusion of reactant and product cations through a laminar boundary layer to a smooth rotating disc. For depositmasses from 0·3 mg/cm2 to about 5 mg/cm2, the mass transfer coefficient increases significantly with deposit mass. For deposit masses greater than 5 mg/cm2 and at least up to 12 mg/cm2, the mass transfer coefficient has again a constant value which is some four to seven times the initial ("deposit free") value. The rate constant for the entire range of deposit masses studied (0 to 12 mg/cm2 ) can be expressed empirically as a cumulative normal distribution of the logarithm of the deposit mass.The enhancement in the mass transfer coefficient for deposit masses greater than 5 mg/cm2 relative to the initial mass transfer coefficient depends on the local operating conditions and increases with increasing disc rotational speed. This enhancement is, however, independent of the previous history of reaction rates.

With the employment of a system of ore pillars to support the hanging wall during the mining operations at the North Mine, it was found that, when the stopes were worked out and the pillars remained intact, the main footwall drives developed an undulating longitudinal section due to the shrinkage of the filling in the worked out stopes.These depressions collected water, which made the footwall drives very wet under foot, and everitually worked its way into the pillar workings and the levels below.Water was also finding its way into the shafts because of the silting-up of the level drainage systems and, as both the shafts are down-cast, this tended to increase the humidity of the air entering the mine.To overcome these troubles it was decided to try a system of siphons as a method of subsidiary drainage.SYSTEM AT PRESENT IN USE.All drainage water is collected as near to its source as possible, run into a sump in an adjacent low lying part of the level, and continuously removed from these sumps by a siphon system.Each level has its own system. The purpose of a mineral comminution circuit with a ball mill running in closed-loop with a hydrocyclone classification cluster is to feed the downstream process with the target particle size. Maintaining the optimal particle size in the flotation feed can significantly improve plant cash flow. In particular, reducing the amount of coarse material is often a major challenge. Existing instrumentation to provide particle size measurement is considered standard equipment in most modern concentrator plants. However, availability is often very low, mainly owing to high maintenance requirements of the analyser and associated sampling system.CiDRA Minerals Processing has developed two novel and robust technologies that address this challenge by providing high reliability and very low maintenance systems for on-line measurement of coarse material in the overflow of individual hydrocyclones. The first system is non-invasive and measures pebbles and rocks greater than 6 mm. This paper focuses on the second system, which is a ruggedized wetted sensor design with no moving parts and provides a real-time trend of the desired target grind size parameter, such as percentage above 150 micron.Both systems have simple robust designs and measure in the primary overflow stream of the individual hydrocyclone. Individual hydrocyclone measurement enables identification of poor performing hydrocyclones in addition to providing a representative measurement of the whole hydrocyclone cluster. The systems do not require sampling and associated sample transfer piping circuits that are prone to plugging, thus avoiding high maintenance requirements.The wetted sensor will be described in detail along with its implementation in a robust control scheme in a major copper concentrator in North America. THIS has been a much-neglected branch of engineering. With the majority of industries labour is the chief item of trouble and expense. Anything that will reduce trouble and increase efficiency is well worth considering. It is only of recent years that any attempt has been made on a scientific basis to improve conditions sporadic attempts having been made from time to time, privately and by law. Some have been successful, others unsuccessful not necessarily the fault of those who initiated the ideas, though naturally mistakes were made in some cases for want of experience, but those whom it was desired to benefit were not always prepared for the change, and by their distrust hampered schemes instead of assisting them.Man power is generally more expensive than machinery, though there are exceptions, such as when a small amount of work has to be done in a place where machinery does not exist, and it would not pay to instal any or where labour is cheap, and skilled workmen are scarce as in some tropical countries. When machinery is first introduced it generally causes the suspicion that it will deprive men of their work. It may cause men to vary the conditions of their work, and in some individual cases, when men are unable to conform to changed circumstances it may result in a certain amount of hardship; but, after all, the less competent must not hold back progress for the general good. Besides, changes as a rule do not take place suddenly, so old hands can generally find work at their particular calling 'till nature requires them to retire. All previous attempts to cut rock in boring by means of revolving steel cutters have failed, chiefly in consequence of the mis-shapen teeth grinding the rock and themselves simultaneously, until, after a very few revolutions, the points of the cutters were so worn that it was impossible to force them into the strata. The diamond drilling plant being cumbrous, complicated, and costly, and seeing that fully 70 per cent of the boring generally needed is in what is known as the" milder strata," it will be readily understood that much of the work done will not pay a dividend on the outlay, so great is the cost of removal, the wear and tear of the machinery, and the loss of diamonds. The Calyx Drill, however, invented by Mr. F. Harley Davis, has been constructed so as to overcome these difficulties, and will penetrate quickly and .at a low cost this 70 per cent. of the milder strata. The Drill has taken ten years' hard work and thought to bring it to its present state of perfection, and it will now drill with steel cutters the 70 per cent of the work performed by the diamond drills at a greater speed and at about one third the cost of the latter.The utility of the diamond drill for certain work is undeniable, but it cannot by any means be described as a machine of general popular usefulness that is to say, it is quite beyond the reach of the great masses of mankind.

The success of smooth blasting essentially depends on geological condition of rock. Also, in the perimeter hole, borehole pressures with light, well-distributed explosive loads are important to minimise overbreak. In order to simulate perimeter holes with scaled model test, the borehole pressure was considered as a factor of scale. Hydraulic oil pressure is applied as borehole pressure instead of using explosives and detonators in order to remove the undesirable effects of detonators in an experimental set-up of just two perimeter holes in a tunnel blast. The borehole pressure on a perimeter hole is nearly reproduced with hydraulic pressure which is generated by non-electric detonators in the hermetical cylinder.

The Morobe Goldfield inPapua New Guinea has produced in excess of 120 tonnes of gold from predominantly alluvial sources. Hardrock gold has been mined historically at Wau (23 t) and Edie Creek (4 t) and geological resources have been established at Hidden Valley (78 t), Kerimenge (36 t) and Hamata (30 t).Numerous prospects have also been identified within the goldfield. Primary gold mineralisation is related to intrusion of dacitic to andesitic Edie Porphyry (2.4 to 3.8 Ma), often with associated diatremes, which have intruded along major regional structures. A full spectrum of deposit styles from proximal (mesothermal) to distal (epithermal) to the porphyry source is recognised. The transition between the proximal and distal styles is recognised both between deposits and within an individual deposit. The deposit styles should be termed porphyry related gold mineralisation rather than given the generic epithermal and mesothermal labels.   It is proposed that magmatic fluids which evolved from parent melts to the high level Edie porphyry stocks mixed with convecting meteoric fluids and were channelled along major structure and diatreme contacts. Proximal to the intrusives, gold mineralisation is associated with deposition of pyrite-hematite-quartz+/-magnetite-gold (Hamata) and pyritebasemetals-quartz-gold (Wau). The mineralising fluids were hot, and periodically saline due to pulses of magmatic fluid. Gold is non-refractory and occurs as 20 to 30 micron blebs within the pyrite.   More distal from the intrusives or under late cooler conditions, mixing of cool dilute meteoric and magmatic fluids resulted in gold deposition associated with arsenic rich pyrite-and arsenopyrite-mineralisation (Kerimenge, Hamata and Edie Creek). Gold is refractory and occurs within the sulfides either as sub-micron inclusion or within the lattice.   CO2 and H2S gases which evolved off the upwelling hydrothermal fluids as a result of boiling and pressure reductions, condensed within superficial groundwater and formed cool oxygenated bicarbonate fluids. These fluids percolated back down the structures depositing manganocarbonate in the upper parts of the hydrothermal system. At deeper levels in the system mixing of the descending bicarbonate fluid with upwelling mineralised fluids deposited manganocarbonate-quartz-sulfides nonrefractory gold (Hidden Valley, Wau and Edie Creek).   At Kerimenge the cool bicarbonate fluids have also quenched a late stage magmatic fluid rising along high permeability structures. The quenching has resulted in deposition of non-refractory gold mineralisation associated with hessite (Ag2Te)-tennantite-chalcopyrite deposition.   Within the Morobe Goldfield, a transition from deeper level pyrite-quartz+/-hematite-magnetite to intermediate level quartz sulfide and quartz-carbonate-sulfide deposition to upper level, massive manganocarbonate deposition is recognized. Gold mineralisation can occur within all levels up the system.
