When the mining and milling of 1100 Copper Orebody commenced, difficulties were experienced in producing a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 Orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in an inherently flotable fine pyrite and silica fraction. The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to'the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

The amount of raw material used in the production of cement can be reduced by partially supplementing it by pozzolanic waste material without changing its properties negatively. This paper discusses results of an investigation using slag from the Pt industry, from the production of steel using Midrex processes as well as fly ashes from different coal power plants in South Africa. These are blended in a 20 per cent slag or fly ash to 80 per cent cement ratio. The properties of the mixtures depend on the phase composition, chemistry, grain size and the sources of the materials. The results are promising, but show variable behaviour depending on slag and cement composition. Compressive strength tests as well have heat flow curves showing the hydration behaviour, indicating that 20 per cent addition of slag or fly ash to ordinary Portland cement is viable. There is a large potential to use slag in cement mixtures and this study can be used to develop cements that will positively influence CO2 emissions and help to reduce large slag and fly ash stockpiles.

The Hellyer orebody is a fine grained, massive sulphide Pb-Zn-Ag- Cu-Au deposit located in western Tasmania. Initial testwork showed that the orebody would be difficult but not impossible to treat by conven- tional flotation. A staged programme-of work was commenced to demon- strate that marketable concentrates could be produced with satisfactory recoveries. Following laboratory testing of drill core to define two flowsheets, bulk samples of Hellyer totalling 20,000 tonnes were trialled at 6 tph in the Cleveland concentrator over six months. The high through- put and extended duration of the trials ensured maximum confidence in the results and that scale-up to subsequent plants would be with a mini- mum of risk. The milling trials were successful and the Cleveland concentrator was expanded in early 1987 to treat 250,000 tpa of Hellyer ore to produce 85,000 tpa of bulk concentrates. Late in 1987 construction commenced on a 1 mtpa concentrator at Hellyer to produce separate copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates.

Offshore minerals legislation has been introduced to provide jurisdiction over the exploration and recovery of mineral resources, particularly petroleum, from the territorial waters and parts of the continental shelves adjacent to coastal states. Ratificat- ion of the 1958 Geneva Conventions on the Law of the Sea has provided some measure of international agreement amongst signatory powers. Because the relationship of the Australian States to the Commonwealth in their federal system, the Australian offshore petroleum legislation is of particular interest. The customary role of the States in mineral resources management, which has extended to the offshore, is under challenge from recent unilateral Commonwealth Government legislative actions in the fields of mineral resources jurisdiction. Environmental considerations provide an additional issue, as yet unresolved, with the delay in submission of the Report of the Great Barrier Reef Petroleum Drilling Royal Commissions

Product stewardship in its most basic form is simply risk management applied to the products we produce. Conceptually it may be considered as a more expansive approach to many existing safety, heath and environmental programs. Key differences include the extension of responsibility beyond the direct control of management, and consideration of the implications your products and processes have on the broader community, as opposed to the confines of an individual mine site or operation. This paper reviews the processes used by Orica Ltd to manage its product stewardship program. OricaÆs product stewardship program is expansive and supports activities and business that range from manufacture and delivery of commercial explosives and sodium cyanide to mines throughout the world, supply and operation of municipal water facilities, and manufacture and distribution of consumer products such as household paints and adhesives. We highlight the development of the program through experience both good and bad, and by use of case studies to illustrate how an active product stewardship program is an effective business risk mitigation strategy.

A sequence of ultramafic units, very well exposed in Munro township in the Abitibi areal, of the Cahadian Shield, exhibit features which indicate that they are sub-aqueous extrusions. They occur within a sequence of tholeiitic pillow lavas, thin graphitic sediments. and large differentiated sills. The units range from a few metres to more than 250 m in length and less than 1 m to over 30 m in thickness. Over 60 individual units, occurring as flat pancakes on top of one another, make up a total exposed thickness of 150 m. The units have formed from a magma composed of a very olivine-rich picritic liquid carrying up,to 40 per cent olivine phenocrysts in suspension. Different units display a variety,of cross-sectional profiles. As an example of the most extreme type of profile, a typical unit 2 m thick consists of a cap of highly jointed fine-grained quenched rock, 10-30 cm thick, which becomes coarser downwards, grading into a zone composed of radiating and criss- crossing skeletal olivine crystals forming the well-known spinifex texture. This becomes even coarser-grained downwards, with "books" of parallel platey olivine crystals developing sub-perpendicular to the plane of the units. Vibration of surface caused by seismic quakes can make a risk to great mining costruction. We have to do with this risk in the Belchatow open cut mine where seismic quakes of various energy and range have occured since the end of 1970s. The seismic risk influence on the mine structure with the special attention to the slopes of an internal dump has been presented. Hydrogeological and geotechnical conditions of the lignite mining and internal dumping of overburden and ash from Belchatow power plant have been considered. Seismic activity in Belchatow open cut from 1979 to 2001 was described and the connection between mine working and seismicity of this area was investigated. The energy and approximate location of the quakes and seismological parameters of the strongest ones observed from 1995 to 2001 were presented. The mechanism of the quake focuses was determined by means of the primary-arriving wave method. Stability of the slopes was evaluated by means of the Fellenius method. It has been found that seismic events occured in Belchatow region may cause only local eboulements whereas there are not any safety risks to the stability of slopes of the internal dump in Belchatow open cut.

The design and operational aspects of fluidised solids transfer-cooling devices will be discussed in this presentation. The devices include air slides and fluoseals (also called seal pots, loop seals, etc), which are widely used in metallurgical plants and other processing plants. Cooling can be achieved while solids are transported in the solids transfer devices. The units combining solids transfer and cooling provide compact and clean plant layouts and also reduce capital and operational costs. Fluidised devices provide excellent gas-to-solids and gas/solids-to-surface heat transfer rates, hence high cooling efficiency. Fluidising gas, such as air, nitrogen or other gases, can be used as direct cooling mediums. Coolants such as water, steam and other liquid or gas cooling fluids can be used as indirect cooling mediums via tube coils immersed in the fluidised solids. The fluidised transport devices share some common features with fluidised bed equipment. The air slide is similar to a linear fluidised bed while the fluoseal is similar to a circular fluidised bed. Therefore fluidised bed design techniques are applicable to the design of the air slides and fluoseals. The heat and mass balance and temperature profiles of the devices concerned will be discussed in the presentation. The design criteria and operational philosophies of the critical components such as tuyeres and air spargers will also be discussed.

Power ultrasound may be applied to enhancing the processing of minerals. The enhanced performance is achieved through the very localised high-energy release at the mineral surface from the collapse of cavitation bubbles produced by power ultrasound. This gives rise to two effects: initially, the rapid cleaning of mineral surfaces û of oxidation products and coatings of fine adhering gangue minerals û and the attenuation of the boundary layer at the mineral surface during leaching, which allows fresh leachant to contact the surface more readily. Work carried out at CSIRO in conjunction with Tiwest Joint Venture has demonstrated that it is feasible to apply ultrasound to the leaching process in order to enhance the removal of contaminating minerals. When applied to the production of synthetic rutile from reduced ilmenite produced by the Becher process, the use of ultrasound proved beneficial to both the aeration and the final acid leach process. The effect of ultrasound was less marked in the case of the aeration process, once the method of introducing and dispersing the air was optimised. In the subsequent acid leaching step of the Becher process it was found that the application of power ultrasound could reduce leaching time to about one quarter of the time required when only agitation was employed. Projected capital and operating costs, based on currently available commercial equipment, are also presented, and indicate that the use of ultrasound is commercially as well as technically feasible.

Before any accident prevention and total safety programme can succeed, a safety concientiousness or attitude needs to be implanted in the employees' minds. Psycholog- ical and physiological conditions play a vital role in accident causation and prevention. Both need attention in a good safety programme, but working place conditions and environment are more easily corrected. However, the challenge is to change attitudes in the minds of men - psychological factors in accidents. To do this does not require a Safety Officer, but does require a Safety Adviser. At Blackwater mine a Safety Adviser is available to all sections of the organisation to guide and assist, to provide data and material to use at meetings, to help in accident investi- gations and to help organise training. To eventually achieve total commitment requires every member of the management team to be a salesman towards all around selling an attitude to safe working, a way of life. At Blackwater mine the workforce is young overall with most employees being under 40 years old. Psychologically this is a quite different problem to a balanced ages working group. A great deal of effort is needed to communicate with the younger, articulate, better educated employee who is also generally a skilled operator in the capital intensive

During the intial two years (1972 - 1974) of exploration at Telfer, water require- ments were limited to supporting a 50 man camp and diamond drilling to verify thickness and grade of the stratabound ore deposit. Water bores were drilled to intersect the Middle Vale Reef down dip from its outcrop about 70 metres below surface. The MVR reef is an oxidized pyritic horizon which contains 30% - 65% sulphide below the zone of oxidation and forms a highly porous leached gossanous zone to a depth of 100 metres. A review of publicly available coronial inquiries into fatalities that have occurred within the resources sector since the year 2000 reveals that a loss of corporate memory has been a contributing factor in 40 per cent of these accidents (National Coroners Information Service, 2010, Appendix B). With the highest levels of employee turnover within the Australian economy, increasingly complex operations and an ageing workforce, the management of corporate memory within the Australian resources industry poses a significant and often unrecognised safety risk.    The North Parks airblast of 1999 is used as a case study to highlight how corporate memory loss poses a significant hazard to resources projects and how such incidents will continue to occur if corporate memory is not effectively managed. Best practice from other industries is discussed to demonstrate how knowledge management systems can effectively work. This paper discusses how systems can be put in place within the geographically diverse resources sector, and how at the heart of any knowledge management system a culture of knowledge management needs to exist within an organisation.   The paper then discusses the importance of retaining key personnel and utilises findings from primary survey data collated in 2009 to show the size of the retention problem within the industry. From the data possible solutions to retaining key staff are proposed.   Finally the large and increasing role of contractors and consultants within the industry is discussed and methods of managing their knowledge are proposed.

A 250 tons per day ammonia-ammonium carbonate leaching plant is now being operated by Samin Limited, to extract copper from the oxidised ores at the Burra mine. This forms the first stage of a plant, which will eventually have a capacity in excess of 1,000 tons per day. The article reviews the history of the mines at Burra and the metallurgical studies which have been undertaken since the old mines closed in 1917, in an endeavour to recover the copper from the low-grade deposits left by the original miners. The reasons why an ammonia leaching process was selected instead of the conventional flotation or acid leaching methods are discussed. The paper concludes with a detailed description of the plant and the basis on which it was designed.

Around no subject of technical )uterest have prejudice and wrong-thinking in the past so wrapped a web of obscurity as that of the corrosion of metals.It is a matter which has primarily concerned the engineer, but the paucity of his training in chemistry and electrochemistry has been the stumbling block to a better understanding of its mechanism.Now that the more important conditions controlling corrosion have been scientifically.established, it can be seen that, with the exception of but a few of the minor points, the electrochemical laws enunciated by Faraday, Helmholtz; Nernst, and others, are sufficient to include all the facts of the process.The word corrosion (derived from the Latin rodere-to gnaw) is so often wrongly applied that a definition at this stage would be useful. As now understood, it means the dispersion and waste of the useful solid metal by conversion into a useless compound which mayor may not be retained on or near the metal remaining.Commonly the presence of these compounds is regarded as evidence of corrosion, but the converse is not necessarily true; the lack of visible corrosion products on a clean surface of metal is no criterion of the absence of this change. It may be difficult to prove that the erosion of such a surface has been caused by chemical and not by mechanical effects alone.

The presence of arsenic in solutions which result from the processing of many sulphide minerals leads to a need to understand its speciation in aqueous systems and the reactions of those various species. This paper deals in particular with the precipitation of arsenic from aqueous solution in the form of insoluble inorganic compounds in order to remove arsenic from various hydrometallurgical process streams. The solubility and stability of the precipitates is examined. It has been found that many of the arsenic compounds presently used are more soluble than previously accepted and unstable in disposal sites such as tailings ponds.

The Permo-Triassic Bowen Basin developed during the final stages of the Tasman Orogenic Phase in eastern Australia. The basin has considerable economic value as a source of coal, natural gas and precious metals. The basin, which is of controversial origin, is preserved as a north-south trending, asymmetrical syncline bounded in places by faults. It is here interpreted as a retroarc foreland basin which developed on the landward (west) side of a continental arc associated with continent-ocean plate convergence. Initiation of the basin occurred via back-arc extension in Early Permian times, coincident with a phase of talc-alkaline arc volcanism. Early Permian, mostly marine sedimentation gave away to extensive coastal and alluvial plain depositional systems in Late Permian times, coincident with a resurgence of arc volcanism. Triassic sedimentation was almost entirely alluvial and coeval with westward propagation of thrust sheets from the eastern basin margin. Compressive tectonics climaxed in Middle to Late Triassic times, terminating sediment accumulation and uplifting the entire area.

Recent advances in technology have allowed many of the problems of directional control of long diamond drill holes to be overcome. Three case histories are presented, from Cobar, Hilton North and Mount Isa Mine, in which careful hole design and the use of wedges and down-the-hole motors have allowed tight directional control of drilling. Substantial savings in time and cost were achieved in all three cases.
