Monazite sand is processed at the rate of 25-30 tons per week at Rare Earth Corporation of Australia's plant at Port Pirie. Main products are rare earth concentrates of cerium, lanthanum and yttrium. By-products are commercially pure water soluble thorium sulphate and tri sodium phosphate. The more recent developments in volume rare earth applications are Discussed.

This paper follows the development of selected aspects of tunnelling from the 1800s to present day. Regional conceptual and grassroots exploration by Epithermal Gold Pty Ltd. during the latter part of 1984 resulted in the virgin discoveryof the Mt. Fullstop Gold property located 115 kilometres west of Townsville, North Queensland. A major compilation of Epithermal, Hotsprings and Bonanza gold ores of volcanic association as defined by Lindgren in 1933 Ind refined by Buchanan and Eimon was reviewed. The geologic characteristics observed at Mt. Fullstop were found to be similar to those recorded with some S.W. United States gold Deposits.

The Agnew Nickel Mine has a short his-tory of mining activities. However it has experienced a large variety of ground support problems. These problems relate to geological, hydrological, geomechanical, structural and mining techniques. The majority of the prob-lems occur in other underground mines. How-ever the large serpentinite hosted ore body which contains over 80% of the ore has prob-lems rarely encountered in other mines. Sol-utions to the problems are only being gained by understanding the factors creating them.

A considerable amount of psychological research has been conducted on human behaviour and its relationship to accidents. However, the research covers very wide fields and the findings drawn are so varied that at first sight they are confusing and there does not appear to be any major useful lead. I propose a discussion of a number of research findings to illustrate the variety and complexity of the human behaviour factors involved in considering safety. Such discuss- ion might point to some conclusions which could lead to an action programme to improve safety records.

Operation of a pilot heavy medium separation plant allows flexibility of operation not normally possible in an operating plant. Much useful data can be obtained, although some limitations apply. Projects carried out at AMDEL have included HMC separations at 1.5 to 3.6 specific gravity, comparative operation of HMC and DWP separators and the use of fine feed and product screens. Investigations of this type have provided a considerable amount of information on HMS plant performance and characteristics under a wide range of operating conditions.

During the 1960s, '1970s and 1980s, the Australian companies spent much of their time exploring in Australia. It was only some of the major companies like CRA and BHP that had explored in places like Bougainville and Chile. However, during the mid-1980s some of the smaller companies started looking beyond their shore towards other opportunities in other countries. Why did they do this? Were they pushed or did they jump? And where did they go?

The Adavale Basin and Warrabin Trough are remnants of a much more extensive Devonian to Carboniferous depression which evolved through four tectonic stages; an initial period of rifting and three periods of foreland thrusting, which cannibalized much of the earlier depression. The Basin has subsequently been buried by sediments of the Galilee and Eromanga Basins.The Basin was initiated during the Early Devonian when the earlier cratonized Thompson Foldbelt rifted away to form a marginal sea comparable to the South China sea. This crustal extension was probably in a Northeast-Southwest direction. These initial rifts were the site of acid volcanism (Gumbarbo Formation) and later, deltaic and shallow marine facies (Eastwood Beds).

The different stages of the metallurgical evaluation of an ore resource and their importance to overall project evaluation are described. Particular emphasis is placed on the liaison that is necessary between the different members of the project team from the preliminary exploration phase through to the completion of the final feasibility study. Metallurgical input at the earliest stage is recommended. The incorporation of metallurgical and marketing data into ore reserve statements and the effect of the metallurgical evaluation on ore reserve classifications are discussed.

The perennial challenge facing mining and minerals operators is to improve productivity, usually by a combination of cost reduction and performance improvement. In a typical production situation involving mining and processing activities, the standard approach has long been to seek improvements in each activity, effectively in isolation from each other. However, the realisation is growing that there is considerable potential to achieve really substantial productivity gains by much improved integration of mining and processing with the key being to consider what is best in the total sense. Economies in cemented fill demand the utilisation of the full potential of the portland cement component of the mix. If declined tailings are used, it is desirable to establish the optimum particle size distribution. Pozzolic materials and slags are. very useful additions to increase the amount of cementitious material through reaction with calcium hydroxide produced by hydration of the cement. It is also essential to check out the presence of substances which may seriously affect the setting and hardening of the cement or the durability of the cement bond. The importance of quality control in the preparation of cemented fill cannot be over Emphasised.

The Australian underground contract mining industry has grown from almost nothing 25 years ago to the point today where half the countryÆs underground mines are using contractors to produce their ore and do their development. This growth was driven by the need to change poor industrial relations and work practices in sectors of the industry, along with the needs of many small gold mine owners to preserve their capital by using contractors to do their mining. The industry is dominated by two major privately owned contractors with a number of other publicly and privately owned contractors making up the balance of the market. This paper discusses the important trends in the contract mining industry and the directions it may take in the next few years.

With the advent of Computer aided mapping and surface modelling techniques Geologists and Engineers have had to become familiar with the capabilities and limitations of these systems to effectively use them. In this paper we will trace a short history of the rather rapid progress in this area. From this historical perspective we will make some observations and use these to guess at what the future holds. We hope that this paper will assist in clarifying the develop- ments in computer assisted mapping and modelling and promote thought on how these techniques may be best applied to the problems of the Mineral Industry.
