Over the last five years Mt Leyshon has matured into a sizeable gold mine by Australian Standards. In the later part of 1990, after commissioning of the 3.5 mtpa CIP Plant upgrade, experience indicated there was potentially additional Mill capacity beyond that being utilised at the 3.5 mtpa rate. Overall throughput was limited by crushing plant performance and high operating costs resulting from the age and condition of the main crushing plant.In addition, mining was being carried out using a mining contractor who utilised relatively small, high cost mining equipment, and on-going exploration success was also indicating that the then current mine plan would result in only a portion of the available resource being exploited.

Changes to the mining process to improve fill stability are described, including increased focus on fill performance, modifications to extraction techniques, increased fill quality, changes to drill and blast practice, and research into backfill stability. At Renison Limited, on the West Coast of Tasmania, modern trackless decline mining is practised to exploit the various tin bearing sulphide deposits. With footwall accesses, one of three adaptations of horizontal mechanised cut and fill, 1. unsupported, 2. pillar supported,and 3. unsupported - resuing is used to stope each defined ore block. The stoping method is basically determined by the dip and true thickness of the ore with emphasis on high ore recovery. Extreme flexibility is possible by the selective mining of stope lifts, the consumption of development waste as fill and the utilisation of the same mobile equipment in all phases of production. This has resulted in high productivity and low cost per tonne of ore.

Roadheader tunnelling machines have been used in Australia by both mining companies and contractors involved in the mining and con- struction industries since the early 1970's. They have both advantages and limitations, and this paper discusses machine excavation from the point of view of a contractor who has both reaped the benefits and suffered the conse- quences of using roadheaders. The paper also includes brief descriptions of three projects tackled by roadheader, all the projects being Declines.

The advent and easy availability of fast and powerful digital computers has marked a transition from one era to another in the field of process control in many industries. Mineral processing is no exception. Aims, practices and problems associated with process control of mineral beneficiation plants in the 'old days' are compared with those available at present. Although basic processes remain generally the same, there have been simultaneous social and economic developments, which directly relate to the development and present value of process control. Lower head grades are now treated, plant capacities have increased, and a large proportion of future capital in the mineral industry will be associated with large capacity plant, treating still lower grades. Environmental considerations have pressurised moves to better control in some areas. With these changes, economic operating incentives have changed, and process control has, in many plants, become more critical. Finally, while computer technology has developed recently at a very rapid rate, developments in the fields of instrumentation, basic on-line measurement and sampling have in general lagged behind, limiting the progress possible in process control. This paper focuses on the significant impact that geological information has in relation to the valuation, both equity market and accounting records, of mining companies. There are many different measures adopted by investors and analysts in valuing mining companies. In particular, focus is primarily on calculation of profit as it is the authors primary expertise. The importance of geological information to the calculation of profit (and to many other measures of a mining company performance) is not always understood by the geologist. The aim of this paper is to raise the awareness of geologists (particularly those who are competent persons under the JORC code) of the impact that reserve statements û and changes to û have on profits. This is the first time that this subject has been presented directly to geologists. Similar versions of this paper have been presented at other forums where other important users (directors, auditors, accountants, analysts, investors) or preparers of financial statements have been made aware of the importance of the geological information. In essence, all mining companies prepare annual financial statements, which are adopted by directors and audited. The major items that require judgement generally revolve around two areas û commodity price outlook and the accuracy of reserves and resources. Reserves and resources are important, and that there is undoubtedly a lack of understanding about the assumptions and accuracy of reserves and resources by accountants, directors and auditors, and a general lack of understanding by geologists as to how the information that they prepare is used. Across the globe the majority of mining companies are listed on stock exchanges (with the main exception being nationally controlled mining companies û eg Codelco). In a very simplistic manner, I have divided all mining companies into three types: exploration plays û these companies are still in the finding or proving modeÆ and typically the stock market and investors rely on geological information and remaining cash in determining their assessment of the company; single mine companies û the major items that investors and the stock market look for are reserves, inferred resources, commodity price outlook and discounted cashflow calculations; and multiple mine companies û the investment community and stock market are looking at reserves, inferred resources (generally to a lesser extent at this stage), commodity price outlook, discounted cashflow calculations and profit and loss accounts. Regardless of the type of company, the equity markets, including analysts, try to determine appropriate valuations for mining companies. In doing this the major two areas that require judgemental consideration are the commodity price outlook and the level of reserves and resources. Generally speaking, most mining companies have a strong understanding of their cost structures û in particular their cash costs as distinct from their accounting costs of production û and therefore this area generally gets less consideration than the other two matters mentioned above.

Three transient phenomena have been observed and experienced in the operation of large solvent extraction mixer-settlers. These relate to the ability of the settler to discharge streams with low entrainments arising from different phase separation æproblemsÆ. The operation of large-scale laboratory and commercial solvent extraction settlers has been shown by a number of workers to be a dynamic process, especially at the feed end. Circulating flow patterns are common in all three organic, aqueous and emulsion phases. The circulating patterns in deep dispersion bands in long settlers are believed to form roll fronts that can travel down the settler length within the bounds of the dispersion band. Various physical models are proposed to illustrate the formation and movement of roll fronts within the dispersion band. Another transient phenomenon has been observed in commercial settlers operating without any dispersion band. Entrainment of the continuous phase in the advancing dispersed phase is at high and erratic levels. This supports the conventional separation model, which recommends the presence of a significant depth of dispersion band to æfilterÆ the secondary haze from the bulk separated phases. The third transient is the position and shape of the dispersion band within the settler. Large commercial settlers have been shown to exhibit high variability in both these aspects of the dispersion band. The elimination of all three transient phenomena in commercial settlers has been shown to be effective with an in-settler media of coarse size and moderate specific surface area. The effect of the media is two-fold: it dissipates both the circulating flows and the forward velocity of any roll fronts, and creates a stable deep dispersion band at the feed end that serves to trap secondary haze from the primary coalescence process. It is effective in treating both types of transients involving non-existent or excessive dispersion band depths. The media serves to enhance coalescence by providing a static surface of intermediate surface tension on which droplets can collapse. The random nature of the media also provides multiple stream splitting and re-combination, that presents further drop to drop and drop to media impingement, which in turn promotes coalescence.

An examination has been made of the rate and extent of removal of carbon from scrap metal charges when the melt is exposed to atmospheres which are reducing or oxidising with respect to FeO at unit activity. The mechanisms of decarburisation of molten Fe-C-S- P-Mn-Si alloys with H2/CO/H20/C02 gas mixtures with controlled compositions at high or low concentrations of carbon in the melt in the presence and in the absence of sponge iron, in both slag free melts and in the presence of various slag forming additives are discussed. A significant quantity of carbon can be removed from the metal during the melting stage and under optimum conditions, a high percentage of metal recovery and low carbon can be obtained after exposure of melt to the above gas mixture with controlled compositions. The presence of ferrous oxide provided by poorly reduced ore in the charge and the use of controlled atmospheres facilitated the removal of carbon to very low level during the melting period.

Regional geological mapping and facies analysis of the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous Keelbottom Group of the Burdekin Basin have resulted in a depositional model representing six siliciclastic-carbonate facies. The six facies represent alluvial fan, braidplain delta, siliciclastic shoreline, siliciclastic shallow marine, restricted siliciclastic/carbonate shelf, and carbonate shoal depositional environments. These facies are identified in the Star beds which are equated with and included in the Keelbottom Group in this paper. Facies are repeated throughout the Group, as a result of two transgressive-regressive cycles.The first transgression recognised in the Keelbottom Group began in the mid-Famennian, and followed deposition of the Late Devonian Dotswood Group. It was marked by the deposition of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the basal Myrtlevale Formation, which was succeeded by Siliciclastic Shallow Marine facies at the peak of the transgression. The return of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the upper part of the Myrtlevale Formation marked the onset of the first regression, which resulted in the progradation of Braidplain Delta facies from the northwest of the basin. During the peak of this regression, deposition in the western part of the basin was dominated by Alluvial Fan facies.

BALL, chief government geologist, Queensland, wrote: This paper is intended as a severely mechanical exposition of the means adopted to deal with tremendous inflows of water concurrently with development and exploitation; but incidentally it serves as a splendid exposition of close co-operation maintained between the geological and engineering branches of this large organization.I have been impressed by the completeness of the mine plans of 'Mount Isa Mines Ltd.; but only such a paper as this has brought fully to my understanding the difficulty and complexity of the solid geometry involved in the detection and plotting of the orebodies and their stratigraphic control, including faults and large-scale brecciations, and the managerial foresight that set going the initial investigations.The company's geological branch of course must be given full credit for the results attained, but it gives me pleasure that the Geological Survey of Queensland has been closely associated in much of the study.It is noted that complete drainage was affected, but it would be interesting to learn whether the brecciated zone will again become waterlogged and whether from above or from below, and whether there has been any change in the dissolved mineral content of the water as the work progressed.

The current boom in the mining sector has required mining operations to ramp up production to meet the international demand for minerals. This increase in production is putting enormous pressure on on-site professionals, and in particular the role of the on-site geotechnical engineer is ballooning. Mining engineers are focused on machinery and schedules; geologists concentrate on grade control and resources; everything else becomes the responsibility of the geotechnical engineer. Day to day geotechnical engineering is very different from geotechnical design work, and a practical understanding of both is required to successfully carry out either role. In addition, a successful geotechnical engineer has to have a good understanding of almost all technical aspects of mining. Even more important are good communications skills and the ability to problem solve on the fly. None of these skills are taught at tertiary institutions and therefore need to be learnt in the workplace. However, the shortage of geotechnical professionals means that young engineers do not always receive the mentorship and training they need to develop confidence and technical effectiveness. This paper outlines the changing role of on-site geotechnical engineers and presents some thoughts on how industry and young engineers can adjust to the changes.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy brings together, voluntarily, people with a professional interest in the disciplines and skills which are employed in the mineral indus- try, and in relation to that industry. We come together because we have a mutual interest in improv- ing what is done by the mineral industry, in all its aspects. It is this sense of continuing improvement, of doing better, of doing as well as we can, as our knowledge and skills improve, that unites us in creating and fostering a professional association of like- minded people. We know from our professional training and experience that enormous progress has been made, at an ever-increasing rate, in the mineral industry, particularly in this Century. We know that the mineral industry has played a very major role in providing the means by which so many more people survive to live longer, healthier and more interesting lives, than ever before. Indeed together with the oil and gas industry, which is an integral part of the mineral industry but has achieved its own commercial dis- tinction, it is fair to claim that the mineral industry has played the major role in providing the means for the advancement of the human quality of life.

This paper quotes the results of many years of experiments and observations concerning ore drawing from mining blocks in major ore deposits mined by bulk induced caving of ore and country rock. Numerous laboratory and commercial test results of Russian, Ukrainian and Kazakh mines have been used and processed. Over 35 per cent of all ferrous, non-ferrous and other ore mined in the Russian Federation by the underground method is drawn underneath overlying caved rock (including ore drawing after bulk caving of pillars). The complexity of the process denies a logical or engineering calculation answer to many commercial production questions. Hence the massive research of ore drawing issues targeted at ore recovery forecasts in specific instances in order to assess an engineering solution or to define the design or planned ore draw performance. At first, the conditions were pictured as ideal. Subsequently, it was attempted to take into account the side contacts of ore with the country rock and the caved barren rock, the small size stuff in the caved rock, the unevenly loosening ore, end draw, and so on. The ore draw information available provides ample qualitative characteristics of the phenomena and only approximated and partially quantitative characteristics for individual cases. Many specific situations require individual studies of subject specific models.

At the Huasco Pellet Plant of Compa±fa de Aceros del Pacffico, Chile, the production of iron concentrate suitable for pellet feed from a low-grade iron ore was technically evaluated. In this study, three treating schemes including comminution, magnetic concentration and flotation in pneumatic cells were tested. The best results were obtained at the laboratory scale by flotation technique using Lilaflot D 817 M as the collector without using any depressant. The operational parameters were determined including pneumatic flotation, and three circuits, two including magnetic pre-concentration, with the low-grade iron ore. The best results were obtained by size reduction at 80 per cent under 325 Tyler mesh, three steps of magnetic concentration and three steps of flotation in pneumatic cells. The magnetic concentrate contained 63.02 per cent of iron and 6.6 per cent of silica, and after the pneumatic flotation the iron content increased up to 70.18 per cent and silica decreases to 1.07 per cent with 78.78 per cent of iron recovery at a weight recovery of 31.89 per cent. Therefore, it is possible to use low-grade iron ore to produce pellet feed from magnetic concentrates by using reverse iron flotation in pneumatic cells.

The main objective of the experimental study was to investigate the dissolution kinetics of various forms of carbon under iron bath converting or smelting-reduction conditions, i.e., particulate, free moving carbon in contact with a turbulent iron melt. Iron/carbon melts were contained in cast magnesia-lined silicon carbide crucibles heated by a medium frequency induction furnace. The melts were stirred by injecting nitrogen through 2 mm I.D. alumina lances submerged to a depth of 50 mm in the 100 mm deep baths. Particulate carbon in the form of graphite, brown coal char and petroleum coke, were dropped directly onto the turbulent bath. The dissolution rates of the various carbon types were monitored by taking periodic bath samples for subsequent carbon analyses. The effect of carbon particle size (1-6.25 mm), the degree of bath turbulence (nitrogen stirring rates of 0-20 litres/min), and bath temperature (1300-1500¦C) were assessed. The analysis of the results was complicated by particle buoyancy effects, but it was established that the dissolution rates of the three carbon types investigated were similar, and increased linearly with increases in the gas stirring power inputs. Particle size had relatively little effect on the dissolution rates.

FINANCE FOR EXPLORATION Two factors have basic importance in relation to the availability of finance: the apparent success of continuing exploration activity and tax concessions. It is not proposed to discuss the effect of existing tax incentives, as these have already been outlined and are generally accepted as being reasonably attractive; certainly not a deterrent to possible investors. However, it is obvious that the greater the tax incentives, the greater the amount of money that will be attracted, and the wider the number of people who can be brought into the pool. If, as is suggested, the chance of discovery is related to expenditure and effort, then the more money attracted, the better the prospects of significant finds. It is probably correct to assume that the largest expenditure in mining will come from, or be induced by, people expert in the field, people who are fully aware of the risks and benefits and perhaps making conservative decisions because of this awareness. Insofar as the general public is concerned, while in the first burst of enthusiasm it will frequently follow any promoter, in the long run it too will become more sophisticated and will strongly support only those promoters and companies of good repute and proven record.

Both innovation and excellence are desirable attributes of education, as they are also markers in the progression of the human race, but how attainable are they? The interaction of minerals and humanity provides a special insight into the development of both criteria, from the discovery that chert cuts, through the Bronze Age and the first use of metal alloys for implements, to using coal, oil and uranium as sources of fuel. However, there have been many hiccups along the way, where excellence in one respect has meant disaster in another. Examples are in the exploitation of asbestos, and in traditionally poor work practices in mining, both contributing to the widespread public belief that minerals and mining are ecologically undesirable. Yet is this perception based on the unrealistic expectation of innovation and excellence being simultaneous qualities of any given process? Common sense born of experience indicates that the journey from one, to the other, is usually a long and often tedious process, with much trial and error before excellence is attained. In our time, the partnership between academia and industry is the usual pathway to achieve it. Even so, we should take care that innovation does not become overwhelmed by the pursuit of excellence: as history clearly demonstrates, humanity depends upon both.

The basic model for the evaluation of any coal-bearing property is the cash flow projection, the major components of which are operating costs, capital charges, taxation and revenue. A range of cash flow projections can be produced by varying the assumptions which underlie the operating costs, by assuming various forms of capital funding, by making assumptions as to future taxation and by speculating upon the present and future market value of the product. As for any model, the informational inputs and assumptions are vital because, no matter how sophisticated the processing, the informational inputs and assumptions cannot be improved by it. That is to say, the validity of the output (the total evaluation itself) cannot be of greater certainty or significance than that of the inputs. The total evaluation can of course be expressed in a number of ways such as the Discounted Cash Flow (D.C.F.) Rate of Return, the Net Present Value or, the Payback Period. The foregoing statement may seem trite. However, it is necessary to be clear about it so as to avoid unnecessary complication and a preoccupation with techniques as opposed to the informational inputs and assumptions. So far as techniques are concerned, much has been written and said about them during the last decade. Most of us have heard, if not always understood, something about probabilistic models, Monte Carlo simulation, sensitivity and risk analysis to say nothing of inflationary costing and the relative merits of developing cash flows in terms of current or constant money. Those techniques have their value, particularly if they can serve to illuminate conclusions which could not be reached on a simple and even perhaps on an intuitive basis. I am, however, reminded of one major coal mining project in which 20 or more major variables were identified, many cash flow projections were run on the computer and a detailed sensitivity analysis was carried out. The major conclusion reached was that the D.C.F. Rate of Return was predominantly sensitive to variations in selling price and operating cost. Of course, the funding and fiscal elements of a cash flow projection have to be dealt with as rigorously as possible. However, in the development of any coal property, capital requirements and taxation are, in part at any rate, dependent upon the assumed operational parameters. If the latter are misjudged, the whole evaluation process is deeply affected. The same is true of revenue, in the sense that, the positive cash flow is a function of output as well as selling price and again, misjudgements about achievable and maintainable levels of production also deeply affect the final evaluation. I shall try to underline the fundamental influence of the technological factors upon lead times, capital costs, operating costs, taxation, funding and the achievable and maintainable levels of production. In turn, these affect the whole question of coal property evaluation and indeed, the likely success or failure of any coal mining venture. I make no apology therefore that this paper does not set out to discuss the more esoteric aspects of the evaluation process but rather, directs attention towards some of the informational inputs and assumptions which merit clarification and discussion.

The main iron ore deposits of Western Australia fall into three very different geological classes, which are, in order of importance: hematite enrichment ore, pisolitic limonite ore, and sedimentary ore. These are presently (1973) being mined in the approximate proportions 20 : 2 : 1, while the equivalent proportions for reserves are, very approximately, 200 : 70 : 1. Two minor categories which mar- ginally qualify as ore are detrital material variously referred to as scree ore or canga, and potentially beneficiable iron formation. These two latter types are dealt with very briefly, and the three main categories are dis- cussed in order of economic significance. Hematite enrichment ore results from the selective replacement of a pre-existing host rock by hematite. Almost without exception, this host is cherty banded iron formation (BIF); but certain exceptions have great genetic inter- est. Ore bodies of this kind occur both in the Archaean BIFs of the Pilbara and Yilgarn Blocks and in the Proterozoic BIFs of'the Hamersley Basin. It follows from their virtual restriction to a single kind of sedimentary host that there is strong stratigraphic control over the shape of ore bodies: these may be almost flat, of dyke-like form, or of complex configuration, according to the pre-enrichment structure of the host bed. The development of low displacement, moderate to high-angle reverse faults during the formation of the Argo gold deposit within a tholeiitic gabbro host-rock involved a four stage evolution of deformation and associated hydrothermal alteration. Fault zone evolution and Au mineralisation were associated with high fluid flux, fault-valve behaviour in a severely misoriented fault zone. The far-field maximum principal stress was approximately east-west and horizontal, and the far-field minimum principal stress was subvertical. The fault system developed at approximately 400¦C in a transitional brittle-ductile regime. Initial Stage 1 deformation involved ductile shear and the development of potassic (biotite-rich) alteration assemblages and associated reaction-weakening in shear zones; minor quartz extension veins were formed. Stage 2 is marked by the onset of predominantly brittle shear failure, the widespread development ofmatrix-supported breccias in fault zones and a change to sodic (albite-carbonate-quartz) alteration styles. Extension veins have limited development. Stage 3 is also dominated by brittle shear failure and characterised by a change to quartz-carbonate assemblages in fault-fill veins and breccias. However, large arrays of extension veins are also well-developed adjacent to faults. In Stage 4, widespread subhorizontal quartz-carbonate-biotite extension veins were developed, but shear failure was limited. This is an ABSTRACT only.
