The paper contains the publication of timber shapes recovered from the Burra Mines during open cut operations in the 1970s. The timber was in the process of being disposed of for fire wood. All timber shapes still in existence in September 1990 were drawn.The collection revealed a number of different types of caps and legs. There were also end plates and wall plates from what appeared to be a hanging sets of shaft timber.

The Illawarra Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy over recent years has established an enviable reputation for organising and conducting conferences, colloquia and symposia. And this Symposium must surely enhance that reputation. The subject of the Symposium, Seam Gas Drainage has become a matter of great import- ance to the Australian Coal Industry in a comparatively short time. Our short experience being due to our operations, until recent times anyway, not being unduly affected by gas. The Australian Industry, by virtue of its mines getting deeper and higher rates of extraction being required is now encountering the difficulties with gas which have for so long been part of the coal mining scene in many other countries. Because these gas emissions affect our working conditions by way of creating hazards and affect our production by way of bringing about cessation of operations from time to time this Symposium must be regarded as being very timely out here. I must congratulate the Branch Committee on the general set,yp :o.f the programme of papers. The classification of papers into four groups and the sequence in which the papers were presented provided an excellent flow through from introduction to finality. It is not my intention to further discuss individual papers - already they have been well discussed in this forum and as I understand it outside in the early hours of the morning,

Regulators have an important role to play in fostering and enabling reliable, effective, environmental management. Given this, it is perhaps surprising that there has been relatively little debate on exactly how regulators can enhance their own approaches, in order to promote improved outcomes overall. The authors argue that applying research on High Reliability Organisations, as well as the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Program Framework for Regulatory Excellence, to regulators has the potential to facilitate positive environmental results across the mine life cycle.

Mining engineering, metallurgy and minerals-related geology have proud traditions and are essential professions to support a safe and sustainable minerals industry. However, the future of these professions is under threat. The courses that produce such graduates are disappearing worldwide and the number of graduates available to enter the industry has been falling in English speaking countries for at least a decade. It is unlikely that this problem will be remedied by æsupply and demandÆ. Instead, some active intervention is required.

The valuation of resources companies is open to a huge amount of subjectivity. Not only are valuations subject to fast changing assumptions, such as commodity prices, exchange rates, ore grades, etc., but there is also no common agreement on the methodology to be used. To borrow from Malcolm Fraser, life wasn't meant to be easy for the resource company valuer. I will demonstrate three recent examples of valuations carried out but where the market or actual transactions done show very different results.

Geostatistical simulation has been widely used in mineral resource classification of metalliferous deposits based on international standards such as JORC code which is one of the most extensively used around the world for reporting the mineral resources and ore reserves alongside with objectives of the companies (Sadeghi, Madani and Carranza, 2015). However, the modeling process becomes challenging whenever the relationship between the variables of interest is complicated and cumbersome to model. This characteristic sometimes manifests itself in complex spatial and global cross-correlation measures, deeply depending on the formation and genesis of the deposit. The objective then is to generate the models that not only reproduces these significant characteristics, but also, it leads to a better understanding of a mineral resource estimation and successive decision-makings. In this respect, there are different approaches taking into account the spatial correlation structures, for which can be classified as independent simulation, co-simulation, and factor-based methodologies. In this paper, three techniques: Turning Bands Independent Simulation (TBSIM), Turning Bands Co-Simulation (TBCOSIM) and Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform (PPMT); from those aforementioned approaches are selected to model two cross-correlated variables (Iron and Aluminum Oxide) belonging to an Iron ore deposit located in Brazil, in order to examine which methodology better reproduces the corresponding complexity in terms of local correlation measure. It is the commonly held belief that, because the separation of liquids from solids takes place considerably faster in high rate thickeners than in conventional thickeners, high rate thickeners (HRT's) must use more flocculant than conventional thickeners. Data collected from a wide range of thickener users in Australasia and data presented in the literature is analysed. In addition, pilot plant data, with direct comparisons between HRT's and conventional thickeners, is presented. It is concluded that the flocculant consumption for both thickener types is in the same range.

The coastal dune cordon of northern KwaZulu-Natal is amongst the highest in the world reaching heights in excess of 180 m and up to 2 km in width. The purpose of any feasibility study is to determine whether a particular investment or management program will enhance shareholder wealth by, for example, producing an economic return in excess of the cost of equity capital.The threshold rate of return conventionally used in gold feasibility studies is higher than the cost of equity capital, meaning that some viable projects are wrongly described as being sub-economic with their development deferred.Is the industry failing to fully realise its potential? Aside from important technical considerations that determine the cost of exploiting inground inventories, feasibility studies need to incorporate expectations about future gold prices, exchange rates, interest rates and tax rates.Rather than revert to speculation, insights from capital markets give a rigorous framework in which these parameters can be determined for feasibility purposes. Separate questions sometimes, and then inadequately, addressed by feasibility studies include: ò Is it optimum? Many projects are expanded soon after project commissioning - what does this say about the quality of the initial feasibility study? Moreover, does the rate of extraction really matter? ò What is it worth? Although feasibility studies are designed to address viability rather than valuation, such studies are never- theless used by the industry as further evidence that the equity markets have got it wrong again! More likely the problem is with the financial slide rule being used. ò Can it be debt financed? The bankable feasibility study has entered the vocabulary of the gold mining industry but what does it mean? Does it matter anyway how the project is to be Financed?

Plenary SpeechI have given considerable thought about what I might say to such a group of professionals, given that I am not an extractive metallurgist. It was immediately apparent that I would quickly be out of my depth if I tried to present some technical aspect of extractive metallurgy. So, instead I thought it might be useful to review the subject from the minerals business management point of view in order to improve understanding for the extractive metallurgist who some times finds it difficult to comprehend directions being given by management.

Congratulations on your considerable enterprise in securing the opportunity to have this international conference here in Brisbane - and congratulations on your success in attracting such a distinguished audience from so many nations, with such a broad selection of papers. It is a notable achievement that in the year in which Australia is celebrating two hundred years since settlers first came fran Britain, The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is responsible for some ten major conferences, of which at least four are specifically international, or have a very strong international involvement.

Following plant trials in 1972 Mount Lyell installed an AMDEL On Stream Analysis system for measuring copper and density on the flot- ation feed and final plant tailing streams, in August 1973. As a result of poor performance of the final tailing system these probes were changed over to the rougher tailing stream, back to the final tailing stream and finally to the final copper concentrate stream where the system is currently performing satisfact- orily. The history of the development of the system to its current operational status is Described.

Underground mine development remains as one of the most important factors in cost effective mining. Various forms of continuous development have been proposed with some of the earliest conceived centuries ago.The bore, fire and muck approach remains, in the late 20th century, as the predominant method of underground development, despite intense efforts over the past decade or so to develop other systems.Following a comprehensive analysis of development in the Australian mining industry, the reasons why the traditional development cycle has remained unchanged are identified and potential directions for the future are suggested.

The production of stabilised backfill at mine sites commonly uses Portland cement as the binder. Calcined gypsum has cementing properties and is cheaper to produce than cement. This paper discusses the strength of fills stabilised with calcined gypsum. Laboratory tests were carried out on specimens prepared from tailings obtained from four different sites to allow for the wide variety of tailings found in practice. The results show that the gypsum-based fills can achieve a strength of 1 MPa using around two and a half to four times the corresponding amount of cement.

An assessment is made of the potential for thick seam underground mining of black coal in Australia. A brief summary is given of the geomechanical environment and previous mining history existing in a number of areas of particular interest from the point of view of thick seam mining. A classification of thick seam mining methods is presented with emphasis on the critical geomechanical para- meters influencing the performance of such methods. A summary is made of perceived geomechanical research requirements related to thick seam mining in Australian coalfields.

When the original Mount Gunson joint venture,between CSR Limited and United Uranium N.L. ceased operations in December 1971, an intensive exploration campaign was launched to prospect for more ore in the Mount Gunson region. This campaign resulted in the dis- covery'of the Cattle Grid copper deposit. A comprehensive sampling pro- gramme including the sinking of over 200 diamond drill holes and two vertical shafts,proved the existence of 4.6 million tonnes of ore, at a mean grade of 2.4% Cu,calculated at 1.00% Cu cutoff.

All minerals contain radioactive elements, from the uranium ores of the Gabon, which contained sufficient uranium to initiate a natural nuclear reactor, to the very low levels of some recent evaporites. The commonly occurring heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile and zircon are no exception to this and contain varying qualities of radionuclides, depending on the source. With recent changes in legislation many natural minerals may become officially classed as radioactive. Such moves can inhibit the sales and exploration of many minerals in the heavy minerals suite. The many negative perceptions associated with the word radioactivity can produce an over cautious reaction from regulators and users. This paper presents a method of managing the radioactivity issues associated with minerals such that the safety aspects of workers and public are not compromised, whilst allowing the commercial use of such minerals to continue in a sensible manner. The paper focuses mainly on the mineral zircon and its uses. However the legislation changes particularly in Europe and the USA have the potential to affect all minerals imported into or produced in those countries. The model developed for addressing the issues of zircon radioactivity may be readily applied to other minerals since legislation governing such matters is not mineral specific. There is a strong need for education of both regulators and users of minerals. Regulators are usually not aware of the specific properties or uses of individual minerals. Similarly mineral users are not aware of the radioactive nature of their materials or how to manage this property. The paper concludes by recommending strong cooperative action by both producers and users of minerals to protect the future of their industry.

Life inside the mining family was regulated by the mine. The whistle shrieked the change of shift to the Cornish, Welsh and German miners digging the alien soil for copper at Burra in the 1840s and the deep quartz gold mines at Bendigo in the 1880s.During the golden years of alluvial mining in the 1850s, and later out on the frontier fields of Kalgoorlie and Jarrahdale in Western Australia, the lure of the mine dominated family life. How could it do anything else? The canvas tent, bark hut or weatherboard cottage in which the mining family lived close by the mine facilitated prompt access. The working man of the family attended to the demands of the mine first, and those of his family afterward. Who then organized and nurtured the mining family? The role of the mining wife was multi-fold. She played the traditional roles of home-maker and comforter, raising her children, tending her house and vegetable garden and supporting those friends and acquaintances who had lost children to disease, or menfolk to the mine. Epidemics of measles, the whooping cough or influenza carried away children in infancy or at too young an age. The death of a husband through accident or disease (pthisis was a likely killer) forced upon the mining wife another role, that of provider. When Elizabeth Vigus' husband died in a Bendigo mine accident in March 1880 Elizabeth set up a grocery business to support her young children.' But in other cases the mining wife supplemented the family earnings by part time work, not in the mines for the Mines Act legislation of 1842 forbade the working of women underground, but in auxilfiary occupations which were in demand.2 Ann Mitchell, a herbalist ,found plenty of work in the goldfield towns of Daylesford and Maldon in the 1860s and 1870s.3 So too did Susan Rule and her daughter Catherine who conducted a sewing and millinery establishment in Beechworth in the 1870s.4 The making of the family's clothes was another task of the mining wife and mother.Until the wonderful invention of the sewing machine, this was a tedious and time-consuming task. James Slater Edmonson bought his wife a Wertheim for the sum of 12 pounds in June 1886, just before leaving her and his chil- dren in the Adelaide suburb of Goodwood whilst he went alone to the goldfields of the West. In October of that year he wrote to Louise telling her how he missed the childrens' wondering "whether Slater wore my old shirt now. I always think of him as he sat on my knee at breakfast in that old shirt; and how pleasant it would be if I could rock both of them and sing as I used to do".5
