The gas bubble energy generated by an explosive plays a major part. in the fragmentation, muckpile movement and damage produced. Previously, the interaction between gas pressure and the rock has been interpreted from a theoretical basis or a qualitative study of breakage mechanisms. A method to measure the fluctuations in gas pressure in rock adjacent to the blast has been developed. This peak pressure will vary with structure, as well as with distance and explosive type. The technique is simple to apply and can be used to observe the flow rate of gas at. varying distances. The apparent velocity of penetration is an indication of whether gas has travelled through pre-existing or blast induced cracks. The technique provides a ?n:eans of determining the suitability of an explosive for a given rock type, depending on the amount of displacement desired. The technique has application in optimir.irig throw blasting and predicting and controlling damage, particularly in highly structured rock masses.

Coal mining activity first began on the West Coast in 1864 and has since led to the exposure of large areas of coal and host rock to chemical weathering. These exposed abandoned workings have led to the formation of acid mine drainage, which flows into selected rivers and streams impacting on the natural environment. A previous study conducted for the West Coast Regional Council identified four catchments receiving mine drainage which had elevated arsenic concentrations. The aim of this research is to expand on this initial study by determining the spatial distribution and attenuation of the arsenic within the sediment and water column in each stream of concern. Cannel Creek is influenced from drainage from the Bellevue coal mine adit and exhibits a low pH of ~3, elevated sulfate concentrations and high arsenic and iron concentrations in the sediments. This pattern is repeated in the Rapid Stream and Soldiers Creek catchments, which are also affected by adit inflows from the Sullivan and Blackball coal mines respectively. Soldiers Creek also has significantly high arsenic in the waters, with an accompanying pH of ~5.5. Snowy River exhibits a similar trait with a pH also of ~5.5, but with very low sulfate concentrations. Arsenic concentrations in the waters are consistently around 30 ppb, with sediment concentrations up to 900 ppm. These sediment values might be partially attributable to the operation of the Snowy battery gold ore production facility, but the consistently high As concentrations in the water column and in the sediment upstream of the battery have an as yet unconfirmed source.

Structure is the most important control on the location of hematite deposits in the Hamersley Province in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Unravelling the structural history of mineralised areas, however, is complex because the Province underwent three orogenic events, and three regional extension events followed the main episodes of compression. Steeply E to ENE dipping normal faults immediately predated deposition of the Beasley Quartzite of the lower Wyloo Group after the Ophthalmian Orogeny. Steeply NE and SW-S dipping normal faults predated deposition of the McGrath formation of the middle Wyloo Group, following the Panhandle Orogeny. The resulting interpreted rift was subsequently reactivated and tilted during the Capricorn Orogeny. Late NE trending normal faults are confined to the eastern half of the Province. High-grade hematite deposits occur in rocks that range from intensely folded (Mt Whaleback, Giles Mini) to rocks with less, or only little deformation (Paraburdoo, Channar), suggesting that folding had at best limited influence on ore genesis. In contrast, extensional normal faults are always associated with high-grade hematite deposits, and in particular faults that link the underlying dolomites of the Wittenoom Formation with the overlying iron formation, thus providing a pathway for mineralising alkaline fluids.

Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited has roasted a number of different zinc sulphide concentrates on its sinter machine which pro- duces zinc-lead sinter for an Imperial Smelting Furnace, and results have varied widely. The differences are considered to be functions of !concentrate particle size and reactivity. Amdel have used differential thermal analysis to examine these concentrates and two major effects have been found. Firstly, in concentrates 1containing small quantities of pyrite and chal- L [copyrite, heat is liberated at 400¦C to 650¦C [by oxidation of these two sulphides. Secondly, as particle size decreases, heat release from the oxidation of zinc sulphide commences at flower temperatures and rate of heat release In a sinter bed, the presence of some rite and chalcopyrite would help to heat the cc sulphide to ignition temperature in a orter time, while a finer concentrate would sult in roasting being completed more ickly. A pilot scale experimental investigation of the condensation of zinc vapour from smelter off-gases was performed in conjunction with a mathematical modelling study of the system. The work investigated the feasibility of using the high heat and mass transfer rates associated with a fluidised bed to condense zinc directly from smelter off-gases containing zinc vapour. Of particular interest was whether zinc would revert to zinc oxide during the process of condensation, and whether a zinc fog would form and be carried out of the condenser. A 0.1 m diameter fluidised bed condenser was mounted on the top of a 200 kVA DC electric arc furnace in which mixtures of vapours and gases were generated at 1150 - 1300¦C. The gas/vapour mixtures investigated included Zn/N2, Zn/N2/CO/CO2 and Zn/N2/H2/H2O. Greater than 90 per cent of the zinc was deposited on the zircon sand bed of the condenser, and there was no sign of zinc oxide formation, suggesting that the rate of heat transfer was faster than the reaction rate for zinc oxide formation. There was also no evidence that fog was being formed in the condenser. Using the methods of Kunii and Levenspeil (1991), a mathematical model was developed to predict the behaviour of the fluidised bed condenser. The model enabled the distribution of gas/vapour temperature and bed temperature to be determined as a function of distance from the condenser inlet. Similarly the partial pressure of zinc vapour in the gas mixture, and hence the mass transfer rate of zinc to the particles, was determined. Experimental data allowed validation of the predicted bed and gas/vapour temperatures.

To gain further understanding of the operating efficiency of the BHP Slab and Plate Products Division (SPPD) RH vacuum degasser, physical and mathematical model studies of the process have been undertaken. The purpose was to investigate how the various process parameters affect the liquid circulation rate, to visualise the flow patterns, and to identify and eliminate the cause of localised wear in the downleg. In the physical model mixing times were measured using an acid tracer technique. The results were applied to predicting trends in times required to obtain homogenous melt composition under varying conditions. A 2-dimensional mathematical model describing the liquid metal flow has been developed using the PHOENICS fluid-flow package. The physical model results were simulated and incorporated into the mathematical treatment and an improved design for vessel geometry is proposed. The effect of rounding the downleg entrance or installing a baffle between the legs is discussed.

A pillar 'is a block of coal left in the first working of a coal seam for the purpose of supporting the superincumbent strata in such a manner that the winning out roadways will be safe to traverse by men and by the coal transport system.PRINCIPLES OF PILLAR EXTRACTION.The size of a pillar is chiefly dependent on the depth of cover, and in a lesser degree on the nature of the coal, or the condition in which the seam has been laid down. In a seam at 1,100ft. depth of cover, and assuming a spec'ific gravity of 2.5 overall for the cover strata, a pressure of 1,200lb. per sq. in. is the loading on the top surface of the coal seam before mining begins.When mining commences, and as the pillars are formed, an increased load is imposed on the coal left in the pillars, according to the percentage of coal extracted in the first working. Thus, if 25% extraction is taken in the first working, the load on the pillars is theoretically increased from 1,200lb. per sq. in. to 1,600lb. per sq. in. over the area mined. If this state of things went on indefinitely it would not be possible wholly to extract a pillar because of the extreme pressure tliat would be thrown on the diminishing portion; but, fortunately, another element, that of time, enters into and assists the process of extraction.If the superimposed strata were of an entirely plastic nature, this time factor could not operate, as the cover weight would settle instantly on the remaining portion of the p'illar and finally overwhelm it. The cover strata above a pillar generally have a certain rigidity which does not allow the superimposed weight to settle instantly on the pillar fraction, and it requires a period of time to elapse before the extra weight is felt by the pillar.The time factor varies widely, and is governed entirely by local conditions; it can only be determined by experience gained on the spot or in close proximity to the area of operations. It is dependent on the strength of the strata and its characteristics under bridging conditions.It is, therefore, logical to assume that the more rapidly a pillar can be extracted the greater will be the safety factor and also the percentage of recovery of coal.Up to the present time, the operation of the extraction of pillars in this country has been, with a few exceptions, a manual one, and before mechanization of Collieries can be fully accomplished, the process will have to be performed mecharrically.

The subject of octanes and knock in petrol engines is of general interest, not only to the engineers and chemists in the petroleum and automotive industries, but also to the motorist who wishes to see some light through the haze of propaganda regarding "super" petrols. A mixture of petrol vapour and air will explode when a spark is passed through it if it contains more than one and a half per cent. or less than six per cent. of petrol vapour by volume. In a petrol engine the mixture has to be within the explosive range before it will operate. When the spark is passed it 'ignites the petrol vapour-air mixture which burns with rapid but finite progress of the flame front 'through the unburnt gases in much the same manner that a charge of dynamite is consumed. The turbulence of the gases in the cylinder under normal operating conditions more than doubles the velocity of the flame front and enables the combustion to be completed by the end of the working (expansion) stroke:KNOCKIf the cylinder head 'is poorly designed or is covered with a deposit of carbon, it is possible for "hot spots" to develop, and these can ignite the mixture before the spark is passed. This pre-ignition gives rise to an engine knock but is accompanied by a dull thud rather than the ringing knock associated with the true "knocking" found in a petrol engine and attributed to the detonation of the mixture. The United StatesÆ reporting standard for the mining industry for securities purposes is contained in the Security and Exchange CommissionÆs Industry Guide 7. It defines proven and probable Reserves using its own definitions, and prohibits the disclosure of quantitative estimates, for all mineralisation other than those two Reserve categories (though disclosure of Measured and Indicated Resources as quantitative mineralised material estimates is now informally allowed). Similarly, it restricts disclosure of value estimates to Reserves only, which SEC policy generally requires to be on an historic cost accounting basis. The SEC does not maintain a formal Competent or Qualified Person policy. In March 1999, the US-based Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) released an update of its 1991 guidelines for definitions to be used in reporting of Mineral Resources, Reserves and Exploration Information, closely abiding by the 1997 CMMI recommendations. However, without SEC recognition, reporting under the SME and CMMI definitions is effectively barred for US companies. The SEC intends to adopt the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). This will occur within just a few years, when the convergence project for development of the IFRS has reached a satisfactory point. The US is the largest financial supporter and participator in IASB. The Extractive Industries Standard of the IFRS will likely terminate Industry Guide 7. However, the effect of this international replacement will likely be equally restrictive. This could possibly neutralise the benefit of a CMMI-based global reporting standard. SME, the US society encompassing the widest range of mining industry professionals, does not have a Code of Ethics. It has no mechanism for requiring members to abide by a professional standard. SME is presently looking into possible solutions for this deficiency. US-based professional societies that do have a binding Code of Ethics, generally cater to a single profession, and are not just mining industry related. The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) and the American Institute of Minerals Appraisers (AIMA) are examples. The SME is considering creating a subsidiary body with an enforceable Code of Ethics. To support a CMMI-based global reporting standard, competent persons will need to work across international borders. A standardised mechanism for qualifying and registering competent persons will be needed. National rules and laws must allow competent persons to easily enter countries to perform their work. State issued licenses are increasingly required for much of the work performed in the US mining industry by engineers, geologists and minerals appraisers (valuers). Such licenses are not required by the SEC for Reserve reporting in the US, may not be required for valuation of mineral properties under certain circumstances, and except for real property valuer licenses, they generally do not have a binding code of conduct. However, state licensing of professionals forms a substantial and increasing barrier to interstate trade in professional services, and can be a prohibitive barrier to professionals from outside the US. Any rationalisation of this confusing patchwork of regulations confronting US minerals industry practitioners will only occur as part of larger, national change, hopefully aimed at compliance with international standards and protocols. The US does not have a valuation standard aimed specifically at the mining industry. The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, the national valuation standards, often must be applied to mineral property valuation, but contains no specific instructions for minerals. The author has campaigned against development of minerals valuation standards proposed by US minerals institutes. Instead he encourages the mining industry worldwide to place its support behind the initiative of the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC) to include an extractive industries section in its International Valuation Standards (IVS). This should provide a global set of valuation standards for the mining and petroleum industry within two years. This addition to IVS will provide essential valuation standards reference support for the extractive industries financial reporting standard of the International Accounting Standards Board. The IVS has achieved a high level of acceptance in the developed and lesser developed countries of the world. It provides a comprehensive framework of Generally Accepted Valuation Principles for the valuation profession internationally, for valuation of all property or asset types. IVSC is effectively a sister organisation to IASB. The IASBÆs International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), previously known as the International Accounting Standards (IAS), reference and quote IVS in some instructions for determination of fair value. IVSC is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) member of the United Nations and maintains liaison with many important international economic, accounting and financial agencies, such as the OECD, IMF and WTO.

Mine ventilation models are now an accepted component of most mine management systems. However, modern ventilation models also represent a highly structured spatial data source, defining underground pathways and connections across a mine. This creates opportunities to extend the use of network models beyond ventilation design, by using critical path algorithms to find pathways such as minimum distance or minimum time.This paper explores the use of ventilation network models to automatically analyse and calculate potential emergency escape routes. A variation of Dijkstra’s algorithm is used to predict complex pathways between any two points across a model, representing an escape route from an emergency area (such as a fire) to a safe location (such as the surface or a refuge station). Weighting can be assigned to paths to represent potential travel speed, obstructions or preferred routes. Finally, emergency considerations such as smoke or gas in some parts of the mine can then be incorporated into the pathways to force the algorithm to avoid dangerous routes and specify safer pathways. The basic condition necessary for flotation is hydrophobicity of the surface of the mineral to be floated. For sulphides, this condition usually requires treatment with a collector solution. The conditions for this treatment have until recently usually been chosen by the trial and error principle which has indeed been working relatively well under favourable conditions; ie for simple homogeneous ores. However, the present tendency to increasing use of complex and often relatively lean ores sets increasing requirements for the control of the flotation process. This development is the reason for the present rapid development of process control methods in flotation. In addition to the already well-established practices of pH and reagent feed controls, the importance of measuring and controlling the electrochemical potential of the ore particles to be floated is recognised in the case of sufficiently conductive minerals. In fact, the electrochemical potential seems to be the basic quantity determining the flotation behaviour of such relatively well-conducting minerals as sulphides. Since the hydrophobicity of the mineral and, hence, its flotation properties are ultimately determined by the composition and structure of its surface, information on these under different process conditions is important for design and operation of efficient flotation processes. The basic requirement set for the methods used for obtaining this information is high surface sensitivity of the method. The recent rapid development of surface characterisation has produced several methods which fulfil this requirement. Their application to the problem of characterising surfaces of mineral samples in contact with collector solution is, however, often complicated. The main reason for this is the vacuum environment necessary for the measurement. In the case of flotation experiments this means that in most of these methods the measurement cannot be made in situ, but the sample must be extracted from the liquid and subsequently evacuated in the vacuum chamber of the instrument. It is essential to carry out these steps so as to avoid to the extent possible changes in the sample surface. For the purpose of establishing whether this has been accomplished it is important to compare the results of methods operating in vacuum with some available in situ method. An optimal choice of methods seems therefore to be a combination of the available powerful vacuum methods with in situ measurements. The most usual combination seems to be X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and electrochemical measurements. This choice combines the unique possibilities for direct elemental and chemical characterisation offered by XPS (Cecile, 1985) with the in situ capability of FTIR and electrochemistry. In the XPS measurements, it is essential to apply a special sample handling technique to avoid loss or damage of some sensitive species of the collector-based layer on the mineral surface. In the following will be given some examples of the application of the XPS technique in combination with electrochemical methods of sample treatment to studies of the layer formed on sulphide substrates in ethyl xanthate (EX)

During the next five years Denmark will implement a significant reduction in the national CO2 emissions to fulfil the Kyoto Protocol. The energy sector is central for achieving this goal and extensive use of renewable energy is the most important single factor contributing to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. DenmarkÆs renewable energy sources comprise wind energy and biomass. Wood chips and straw are the dominant type of biomass in Denmark. More than 500 000 tons of wood chips are used annually, currently with rapidly growth prospects. This contribution focuses on sampling of wood chips.

The inauguration of a geological department for the mines of North Broken Hill Limited necessitated the provision of accurate plans and sections upon which geological facts and projections might be plotted.Unfortunately, the basic data were very inadequate. For the British Section, sill survey plans were available, but no regular stope plans. Filling surveys had been preserved for many stopes, but on innumerable pieces of tracing linen, without heights of any kind, and not altogether reliable (as indicated by the finding of very inconsistent duplicates). For the bulk of the old stopes no plans exist at all. The expenditure of much time and patience has resulted in the co-ordination of most of the existing stope data, but the British Section must for the rest of its life continue to have surprises in store, as has been the case for many years past. Manufacture and preservation of stope records has, of course, been on a sound footing during recent years. No reliable cross-sections of the British Section were available.The Marsh, Junction, and Junction North Sections have for the most part very poor data. In the North Section, level plans were fairly reliable, and cross sections of the lode made for ore reserve purposes have been preserved for quite a few years. No floor plans of stopes were kept, however, until a couple of years ago.Diamond Drill records vary in quality. Practically none exist for the Junction and Junction North Sections. This paper describes how Western Mining Corporation uses sophisticated diesel equipment in mining of shallow flat dipping narrow ore- bodies in the Otter Juan area. Though in most cases the stoping method chosen relies on hand held conventional equip- ment, the 'ore handling systems have been designed to allow for a relatively high degree of mechanization. The use of diesel loaders, trucks along with three boom jumbos is described. A single one in nine decline driven as the means of access to the various ore surfaces at Otter/Juan resulted in the first ore being produced first 15 weeks after the first round was fired in the Ore-Decline. Now, three years later, the.mine is in full production, and in 1971/72 produced 392,000 dry tonnes of high grade Nickel Ore.
