A central part of mine planning is to ensure the protection of the beneficial uses of water. Integrated mining software does not generally provide tools to help the mining engineer to achieve this objective. This paper identifies some of the requirements which are desirable for such a tool and discusses how object oriented modelling can help achieve an effective design.

The application of high pressure water jet technology to the drilling of longholes in coal has resulted in the development of a system currently capable of drilling to lengths greater than 200m. Field tests at the German Creek Mine have demonstrated directional control of the holes within a 0.5m section of the seam. Initial application of the technique at the German Creek operations is for drilling methane drainage holes. A company tax rate based on profitability return, or as more commonly expressed, a resource rent taxation scheme has been intro- duced at various stages in the past by both Australian state and commonwealth governments. At present a number of overseas countries are applying this form of legislation to the taxing of sections of their mining industries. Within this study, ways in which this type of tax has been used are examined. The form in which the tax can be applied varies. 1. It can be selectively or universally applied. 2. The base on which economic return is calculated can be selected in a number of ways. 3. It can start operating only when high profit levels exist, or alternatively be the basis of a total taxation scheme. The implication for the Australian mining industry of the introduction of different types of resource rent taxation schemes is assessed within the context of previously enacted systems.

An intensive safety campaign at Mount Isa Mines Limited from 1956 to 1966 saw the lost time accident frequency rate fall to half its original level. A review of the safety programme was carried out in 1967 and in 1968 the Five Point Safety System was introduced. The seven years since its introduction have been years of significant achievement both in production and safety. Improving safety is a fundamental part of Mount Isa Mines Limited's policy and this system has been a major tool in implementing that policy. To be successful personnel need to be prepared and trained for its introduction and subsequently counselled on its use. A carefully prepared programme is required to phase in various aspects of the system and to make use of complementary steps. The system has been a success and it is anticipated that the continued drive to improve the use of principles of the system will further improve safety. It is hoped that this paper will be of value to those personnel concerned with industrial safety in Australia.

This paper examines the interplay between longwall support design/geometry features, operational controls and geological features on ground response. Experience from several investigations is used to demonstrate the influence of factors such as longwall support capacity and geometry, setting pressure, coal seam strength and stiffness, tip-to-face distance and hydraulic supply and control system parameters on longwall ground response. These factors are then used to outline the requirements on key controls such as retreat rate and cutting height and their influence on allowable roof convergence. The ground response curve concept as a means to provide graphical representation of longwall support and strata interaction processes is presented. The approach was developed to address the requirement for a practical longwall support evaluation and selection tool that can take account of support load influences such as changes in roof geology or cover depth. An example of the comparison between single pass longwall and top coal caving in a thick seam environment is given to demonstrate the influence of the various factors discussed.

The last decade has seen a dramatic change in the. size and complexity of mining and mineral processing projects in Austral- asia. Major projects of today are vastly different from major projects of the 19.50's. This change has in turn resulted in a change in the role-of consultants whose contributions have been increasingly in the provision of specialist services and less in the form of overall project design and construction supervision. It is anticipated that, the specialist function will continue to represent the principle mode for consultant participation in major, projects. However, by means' of international affiliation, the development of comprehensive engineering and project management capabilities and possibly as a result of Government intervention, it is expected ,that local consultants will assume an increasing degree of participation in.the overall project design and supervision Function.

To gain further understanding of the operating efficiency of the BHP Slab and Plate Products Division (SPPD) RH vacuum degasser, physical and mathematical model studies of the process have been undertaken. The purpose was to investigate how the various process parameters affect the liquid circulation rate, to visualise the flow patterns, and to identify and eliminate the cause of localised wear in the downleg. In the physical model mixing times were measured using an acid tracer technique. The results were applied to predicting trends in times required to obtain homogenous melt composition under varying conditions. A 2-dimensional mathematical model describing the liquid metal flow has been developed using the PHOENICS fluid-flow package. The physical model results were simulated and incorporated into the mathematical treatment and an improved design for vessel geometry is proposed. The effect of rounding the downleg entrance or installing a baffle between the legs is discussed.

The Burra Burra Aline is in complexly folded Torrensian dolomites and limestones forming the faulted axial region of a major anti cling. The orebody mined was largely of secondary origin and confined between two faults, Kingston's on the west and Tinline's on the east. The orebody occurred at the junction between cherty dolomites and a clastic limestone with a large mass of marble breccia along its western margin. Secondary ore consisted of carbonates and oxides in the breccia and the ore bed and detrital copper minerals deposited. As part of a clastic breccia in sink holes and solution cavities in the dolpthites and ore beds.Primary sulphides occur disseminated in the marble breccia and in stratiform habit in the ore bed. Kingston's so-called 'Lode' may be mineralised marble breccia.The marble breccia appears to be of diapric or sedimentary origin and there is evidence to support a sedimentary origin for some 'of the copper sulphides. No igneous rocks have been discovered within 20 miles of the mine and any hydrothermal activities were probably at comparatively low temperature. The possibility of extensive stratiform and disseminated copper sulphide mineralisation in the marble breccia and ore bed requires testing by further drilling and geophysicalsurveys.

Fragmentation control is perhaps the most critical aspect of quarrying operations, potentially impacting on the costs of all down stream processes, and sometimes even on the economic viability of an operation. The focal points of studies to control fragmentation are generally the pattern of blastholes, the accuracy of drilling, and the most appropriate powder factor. Recent studies suggest that the performance, and consistency of performance, of explosive detonation in the blastholes may also be a significant factor impacting on blast performance in hard rock quarries. This paper presents the results of studies of bulk emulsion and watergel explosive performance, using blasthole velocity of detonation measurements, and its impact on fragmentation. Field studies show a strong correlation between blasthole VoD and blast fragmentation. Another aspect of explosive performance impacting on ease of excavation of blasted rock is muckpile displacement, from which estimates of effective heave energy have been made for different bulk slurry (emulsion and watergel) products.

The Chinese Central Government attaches great importance to the development of its coal industry. Besides carrying out the policy of simultaneous development of large, medium and small coalmines,the main strategy is to gradually modernize coal mining areas and coalmines and to increase the output from individual coalfaces. There are particular implications, processes and main experiences of coalmine modernisation in China.Ensuring a coal output of over one M tonne/yr from one coalface is a very complicated system-engineering project which deals with a wide range of problems. The most important measure used for achieving an output of over one M tonne/yr from a single coalface is the analysis of affecting factors on coalface production by means of the theory c reliability. Thus, as far as possible , the production stoppages caused by mechanical equipment failures and other factors are avoided, the equipment recovery rate is increased and the working hours of shearers are extended so as to ensure a high output and high efficiency.

The factors which influence the reduction of chromite are investigated with special reference to Coobina chromite. This was compared with a South African chromite ore. The reduction characteristics are outlined and the reduction kinetics studied Temperature has the most significant effect, followed by particle size, silica addition and type of coal.Electron microprobe analysis of the products indicates that iron in the chromite is first reduced at temperatures above 1100°C, followed by chromium at around 1200°C. At temperatures greater than 1200°C metallic iron and chromium are formed simultaneously and subsequently give an iron-chromium-carbon alloy. It was observed that the metallic carbide contains a small amount of silicon. The decomposition of the chromite spinel was observed to pass through the FeO.Cr2O3, MgO.Cr2O3 and MgO.AI2O3 forms before slag formation. It is concluded that Coobina chromite is suitable for the production of ferrochrome if direct prereduction followed by intensive bath smelting is used.

The iron orebodies of the Pilbara region are formed by supergene enrichment of banded iron formation and rarely do such processes produce orebodies with uniform grade distrib- utions. The orebodies being mined or developed have to be worked to grade/quality constraints imposed by contractual agreement rather than natural characteristics. Hence it is imperative to use a non-biased ore reserve calculation method. The geostatistical study of a typical iron orebody is presented. Emphasised are the geological characteristics of the orebody manifested as a variable grade distribution of iron and impurities; the determination of variogram model; subsequent uses of the model for computation of ore reserves and kriged lock estimates; computation of dispersion variance and conditional simulation of orebody.

The Barrick Gold Granny Smith underground operation located at the Wallaby deposit is currently in a transition period from a near surface operation in ramp up mode to a fully operational deep mining operation with annual production exceeding 1 Mt/a. A key element in this process has been the project execution of the Wallaby Deeps project from initial scoping study in 2007 to the major production component of the Wallaby operation by 2013.The Wallaby Deeps project serves as an example of how an ongoing detailed study program can be integrated into a day to day mining operation assessing risk and mining application in a perceived challenging narrow vein geotechnical environment prior to mining. A detailed study phase to feasibility level is carried out prior to the mining each zone of Wallaby with mining approval only granted on study completion with full justification.A central element in this process is an optimisation study that utilising the Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) and Schedule Optimisation Tool (SOT) software tools developed by AMIRA Ltd PRIMO research project is used to carry out an NPV value based option study. This optimisation process being then tempered to reality by a predefined practicality assessment process utilising extensive peer review by operational and study team members as well as industry experts.Other challenges facing the Wallaby Deeps project include the requirement to maintain the ramp up production profile to full production by 2012 without disruption but with pressures of an ongoing geological resource to reserve conversion program essential for the study process and mining approvals and also development rate achievement.To date these challenges are being met with integrated planning and the value of the study program itself. Production in 2012 year to date is well on the way to annual production rate exceeding 1 Mt/a.CITATION:Rauert, N S, 2012. The utilisation of fossil fuels, including coal (of which Australia is a large producer and exporter) is a significant contributor to the emission of greenhouse gases. Methane gas, formed during the coalification process, is present in coal seams to varying levels depending on the rank and depth of the deposit. This gas usually escapes to the atmosphere during mining operations without prior conversion to C02 or utilisation as fuel. The quantity of methane released can represent from less than one percent to more than five percent of the carbon content of the coal mined. Per unit of carbon, methane has a greenhouse impact many times that of C02. The emission of uncombusted methane to the atmosphere can therefore represent a greenhouse impact of similar porportions to that of the CO2 formed by combusting the mined coal. However, greenhouse emissions from coal can be minimised by collecting the coal seam methane and converting it to water vapour and the less damaging form, CO2. If such conversion is carried out while performing useful work, the methane can further reduce greenhouse emissions by displacing other fossil fuels. Technology has been developed to allow coal seam methane gas to be economically collected in a pure form, uncontaminated with air. This pure methane can be used to supplement natural gas supplies, to generate power or for the production of chemicals or substitute transport fuels. By collecting and utilising coal seam methane, the greenhouse impact from the mining and use of coal can be minimised, with significant reductions possible in the case of gassy deposits.

A method is proposed for the determination of antimony in ores. Antimony is volatilized as antimony iodide by heating with ammonium iodide at a controlled temperature.The fusion mixture is extracted with hydrochloric acid and the antimony content is measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry using an air/ acetylene flame. The time taken for analysis when comparedwith existing fusion and separation procedures is considerably reduced. Cations and anions likely to be present in antimony ores were also studied for possible interference effects but were not found to interfere.

The number of employees required to operate a continuous operation was determined. The fixed and variable costs of the operation were separated, generally along the lines of labour and stores components. Proprietary `MicroPlanner' scheduling software was used to assess resource utilisation under the constraints generated by seven-day operation to determine the level of resources required and ensure that the maximum use was being made of all resources. The mine economic model was used to account for both the fixed and variable costs of the various task to determine the cost and net revenue of the various scenarios. The analysis indicated that mine output could be increased while reducing the unit production cost. Several eight- and 12-hour, seven-day rosters were sourced and ranked for their potential to improve production and communication, and for their effect on employee health and lifestyle.

The method of evaluation of the approximate temperature of arising spontaneous fire centre and time of coal self-ignition is presented in this paper. The method uses BystronÆs (1997) model of coal self-heating and measurement of carbon monoxide concentration in the mine air outside the fire centre. Knowledge of the spontaneous fire centre temperature and time of fire beginning allows for more accurate analysis of the fire hazard in the coal mine and allows for adequate time to undertake special fire prevention actions. The method is illustrated by an example from Polish mining practice.

The foam behaviour of low molecular weight polypropylene glycols (PPG) was investigated as a function of concentration and molecular weight (190 - 2000 g mol-1). For each polypropylene glycol, foam stability increases with concentration and passes through a maximum, beyond which foamability is suppressed as the solubility limit of the glycol is exceeded and droplets of glycol form. Light scattering data as well as static and dynamic surface tension results provide the key information leading to these interpretations. A maximum in foamability was observed for the PPG molecules with increasing molecular weight (caused by a change in molecular conformation at the interface). This suppresses the Marangoni effect and leads to a decrease in foam stability.

The flotation circuit handling Peko ore at Peko Mines N.L. was examined in July 1970 with a view to determining simple changes in circuitry or reagents which could improve the grade and recovery of the final copper concentrates. The investigation included sampling over one shift followed by detailed testing of the samples by sizing-assays, sizing-mineralogy and sizing-liberation. Mass balances were carried out over total streams, the component minerals and the copper contents. Some laboratory work was carried out to assess the effect of salinity on flotation. In order to handle the sizing-mineralogy calculations a computer programme was set up. The raw data were corrected for locking factors, then mineral and elemental distributions cal- culated for each screen fraction and the total sample. Calculated assays from grain counting were compared with chemical assays. Recoveries through the size-ranges re- vealed very rapid flotation of copper minerals at sizes below 350 mesh. This pointed to a possible circuit improvement by desliming rougher tailings ahead of the scavenger stage. A strong correlation was found between water in concentrates and gangue recovery for the subsieve sizes.
