The mineral sand orebodies of the east coast of Australia occupy approximately three per cent of the dune-heath-wetland coastal environment. They are associated with coastal plant communities ranging from Holocene high dunes carrying mature Eucalypt forests to low- lying heaths on Pleistocene deposits. Commonly, 0.25 to 1.5 per cent of the sand volume mined is removed from the site. Therefore, the volume change is insignificant. The equipment and techniques in use are flexible and the land can be returned in a manner suited to its subsequent use for grazing, subdivision or recreation. Landforms similar to the pre-existing are created in two case studies given. Sophisticated revegetation techniques are practised and are discussed in two case studies. Pre-mining vegetation surveys and post-mining monitoring are used to guide the management of the ecosystem.

Over the past several years, copper prices have surged from under a dollar to over three dollars a pound. However, the long-run trend in real copper prices since at least the early 1970s has been sharply downward. While many now contend that the long-run trend in real copper prices is now upward, the result of structural changes in this market, others are sceptical. Nor is copper unique; the prices for a number of other metals, including aluminium, iron ore, lead, nickel and zinc, have followed similar patterns. This paper examines the forces behind short-run and long-run trends in metal prices. It first focuses on the short run, where it argues that shifts in demand are largely behind changes in prices. It then turns to the long run, where it concludes that production costs and supply largely govern price trends. Finally, it explores several implications of these findings, including those for diversification and market risk, for forecasting mineral prices, for assessing the growth of metal demand in China and elsewhere on metal prices, and for changes in the long-run price trends.

Marketing of mineral products has not yet succumbed to the degree of pre- dictability and exactitude that is fam- iliar to the engineer or metallurgist in pursuing their profession. Whilst the Great Market of the world economy dic- tates circumstances for the sale of min- eral products, there are more than just buyers and sellers in the determination of the revenue received by the producer. For the engineer or metallurgist he will be required to gain an understanding of these participants and of the peculiar languages of the market place. This will be only one of his tasks in learn- ing to communicate with society, as his responsibilities increase as he climbs the ladder of success. There is un- doubtedly a need for better statistical information so that producers and sell- ers can make an appropriate and earlier response to market conditions. There is in addition, a need for more aggressive concern by raw material producers for the development and promotion of better end use of their products. Undoubtedly the marketing of mineral products will be more influenced by the direct involv- ment of government agencies than has been the case in the past. Whilst that 1. The Permian coal in the Muja Coal Measures of Collie Basin of Western Australia has a subdued lustre because of the fine laminations of lithotypes, and the dominance of dull and dull banded lithotypes with minor bright, bright banded and fusinous types. The maceral composition of the coal is variable, however the macerals of vitrinite and inertinite groups dominate and the exinite and mineral matter contents are low. The lithotypes have low concentrations of trace elements and the boron concentration is between 10 - 100 ppm recorded only from the dull lithotypes. On the basis of organic petrology, the inter-seam sediments, flora and the very low concentration of boron, the depositional environment postulated for the coal is braided, fluvial and fluvio-lacustrine with marked fluctuations in the water table. The low water table in the environment accounts for fusain and inertodetrinite in the coal.

Australia has an extremely large total hot dry rock (HDR) resource above a depth of 5 km, equivalent to 7500 times its present annual energy consumption, of which 80 per cent underlies the Great Artesian Basin. The resources most likely to be exploited first are those residing in homogeneous granitic bodies beneath sedimentary basins containing insulating rocks such as shales and coal measures. In the Sydney Basin south of Muswellbrook, an area of high geothermal gradient corresponds to a gravity low thought to be a buried granite body at a temperature of possibly 250¦C. This locality is suspected to have the ideal geological characteristics for Australia's first hot rock test facility. Australia's high HDR potential is possibly unique in the world, in that the potential sites satisfy four independent, geological conditions, each considered as favourable for the creation of a resource, and for the ease of extracting that resource. They are: ò Higher crustal heat generating capacity than that of normal continental crust. ò Much of the Australian continent is covered by sedimentary basins which contain a high proportion of shales and coal measures that have low thermal conductivities, thus providing an insulating blanket for the heat being generated beneath. ò The sedimentary basins are in many places underlain by large untectonised granitic bodies that are not only a major contributor to heat generation, but also ideally suited to the establishment of HDR reservoirs. ò The crustal shortening stress field that is found in the majority of the Australian continental crust results in a vertical minimum principal stress orientation which should result in the development of favourably oriented horizontal stimulation cells necessary for maximising an HDR resource.

This paper will discuss Fordertechnik dawatering screens and their application in process industries. Fordertechnik screens were designed for the dewatering of deslimed, wet fines materials encountered in the mineral beneficiation, sand and coal processing industries. However, these screens have also been used in such industries as municipal waste treatment, paper pulp, chemicals and the food industries. Fordertechnik screens are of simple design and, as a result, offer low capital and maintenance costs. The design is based on the use of twin counter-rotating vibratory motors which provide high frequency, low amplitude linear movement of the screen deck which is essential for high production requirements. Fordertechnik dewatering screens are engineered and manufactured in Australia by Mitchell Cotts Engineering under licence to Fordertechnik GmbH of Mulheim, West Germany

The Kellogg slag fuming model is extended to apply to the Port Pirie plant which uses recuperative heating of secondary air. Exten- sive investigations of plant operations pro- vide parameters for use with the model, and verification that the resulting model provides simulation which is very close to actual plant performance. The model is used to_deter- mine optimum slag fuming operating conditions, and the results of several other investigations with the model are briefly described.

Dust pollution poses a persistent challenge within mining processes, giving rise to a spectrum of concerns, including occupational diseases, mechanical degradation, diminished visibility, and the potential for dust explosion incidents. Existing dust detection and monitoring methodologies face limitations, including insufficient measurement accuracy and intricate processing procedures. Consequently, a comprehensive identification and evaluation system rooted in image processing technology is proposed to facilitate real-time measurements of dust pollution in mining worksites. The study primarily employs grey scale average and fractal dimensions to characterise particle features evident in collected dust images. As a result, the data processing platform can dynamically process data and present dust pollution conditions. Notably, this research integrates the monitoring and assessment of dust pollution with the systematic adjustment of mining parameters, ventilation parameters, and strategies for dust reduction. Through statistical analysis of dust concentration and particle size during mining processes, rock properties such as components and cuttability can inform mining parameters. This information, in turn, guides detailed excavation strategies, including cutterhead speeds, torque, and excavation speed. Similarly, analysing dust characteristics derived from images is a valuable resource for gaining deeper insights into the efficacy of implemented ventilation strategies. By harnessing vision-based information detailing dust concentration and distribution, a wealth of direct guidance becomes available for refining ventilation parameters. This encompasses crucial aspects such as the selection of appropriate ventilation systems tailored to the specific mining environment and the optimisation of operational conditions for ventilation fans. Additionally, the detailed information derived from the visual data allows for strategic decisions on factors like the spatial arrangement of ventilation outlets and the calibration of airflow rates. Moreover, precise choices for dust reduction measures and parameters can be made based on the prevailing dust conditions. Upon real-time monitoring of dust pollution using the proposed method, corresponding measures such as spraying and foaming can be promptly implemented. Crucial parameters, such as spray angles and volume, are integral to these application processes. In essence, the proposed method assumes a pivotal role in not only dust monitoring but also the formulation of preventative and control measures within mining processes.

This paper examines the broader implications of recent and ongoing changes in mineral resource managementå and reporting practices and the impact that these might have on mining companies. It is likely that an International Reporting Code will be developed in the near future, based on a number of National codes produced in recent years. However, this is only part of the reporting story, as an International Code brings with it a range of further issues to resolve. For the Code to be effective, there needs to be international recognition and perhaps licensing of Competent Persons and an expanded base of sponsoring professional bodies. Also, in an increasingly global business, shareholders, regulators and other interested parties need to know and understand the general processes involved in resource and reserve estimation and reporting in order to recognise companies that maintain the highest standards. There is a current trend towards greater scrutiny of company performance in a range of areas under the banner of corporate governance, and many changes are happening that will place greater disclosure burdens on all companies in the future. Good corporate governance means management of company assets for the benefit of the stakeholders. For a mining company, there is no greater asset than its mineral resources and reserves and directors are just as responsible for effective management of their mineral resources as they are for financial good practice. The paper looks at the relevance of corporate governance principles to mineral resource management and the changes that this could bring to the way that companies deal with regulators, shareholders, financiers and others. Finally, increased scrutiny and further regulation inevitably means greater effort by the industry and higher costs. Despite this the author believes that there are substantial offsetting benefits to be gained by companies prepared to take the initiative in improving resource management practices and communicating these improvements to shareholders. In order to achieve the benefits however, the industry needs to fully engage in the changes that are taking place û setting its own standards and working with the regulators rather than sitting back and being legislated against. Mineral resource reporting provides a good model of how this process can work and there will be other opportunities in the coming years as the industry seeks to develop best practice in mineral resource management. It is well known that in most areas of Central Europe it is not difficult to find water - usually at shallow depths - and to recover and use this water. What is much more difficult, however, is to find water sources that offer both sufficient in quantity and qual- ity. Far too often, there are sources that offer abundant quantities but of poor quality or vice versa, i.e. high quality water but insufficient volumes. In the former case where water quality is not adequate - which is more often than not due to anthropogenic factors and only very rarely a result of geogenic effects - the application of treatment techniques can help to turn such water into potable water that is suitable for human con sumption.

Transformations of minerals to processed mineral products fundamentally involve wholesale chemical change, and therefore have a high potential for the release of chemicals and wastes. In this regard minerals processing contrasts with downstream production operations, which involve mainly physical changes. The contrast with mining, which must take place where the minerals are found, is that mineral processing allows choices as to location, processes, fuels and reductants. These choices provide a foundation for dealing with issues of resource stewardship. This paper locates the mineral processing industry in the global perspective by quantifying the masses of major material inputs and outputs, based on current processing choices. Estimates for recycling have also been collated, revealing figures that differ surprisingly from commonly held impressions. The paper draws on a variety of current sources, mainly those available through the Internet, to rank the major transformed virgin mineral products by production, price and value. The figures demonstrate the dominance of Portland cement and steel in the global environmental impacts of mineral processing. Aluminium comes a distant third in the list, and the metals particularly associated with localised environmental impacts have relatively small global effects compared with those of the staple materials of our built environment. This global macro input/output perspective, with materials flows expressed per unit of virgin product, provides a benchmark for grasping sustainability challenges within specific operating businesses. Because of the global scope and pervasive impact of the minerals processing industry, the issue of resource stewardship is rising as a matter for public concern. There appears to be a developing view that the mining and mineral processing sector should take responsibility for these products throughout their various life cycles. However, in a future of stabilising consumption, dematerialisation and intensive recycling, the mining industry would only need to provide the top-up to a stock of recirculating materials. The question of responsibility for stewardship over SocietyÆs stock of materials remains open.

Fundamental rheological properties of slowly settling mineral slurries are reviewed. Slurry flow is discussed in terms of observed shear stress-shear rate behaviour. Particular emphasis is placed on establishing procedures for scale-up and design. Flow property measure- ments on red mud, a waste product from the Bayer alumina process, are presented and used to illustrate recommended design procedures.

South Australian coals are all low in rank and generally poor in quality, with difficult combustion characteristics. This circumstance makes the selection of a fuel source for future power generation difficult, requiring careful study and detailed analysis of the various alternatives. Combustion characteristics can have a significant effect on plant design and costs, and need early attention in any exploration and evaluation programme. The physical location of the deposits, often remote from established infrastructure and centres of population, is also a major factor in the ultimate cost of power at the poirl use.

The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

This paper summarises research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. A review of the froth flotation operation background and the relevance and role of the froth phase are presented. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns from industrial flotation froths is discussed. First, the froth was analysed by the use of the multivariate image analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The partial least squares (PLS) method was applied to develop an empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using an industrial case study. Second, the froth was also analysed by grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and wavelet transform analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths. They also provide qualitative information on the changes in the visual appearance of the froth. The pros and the cons of those methods are highlighted. Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses the reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained from the implemented control strategy are highlighted. Finally, the feasibility of implementing a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.

The control of industrial grinding circuits in Australian concentrators has been practised for many years in one form or another. Some have established simple feedback loops in areas such as fine ore bin feeders (tonnage control), mill pump sump levels (flow control) and water additions (density control). There are also some sophisticated systems which infer circuit product size using complex measurements of mass flaws and water additions in the circuit and attempts are made to control those flaws to produce a constant circuit product size. The inferred size method in Australian concentrators has become firmly entrenched in the last ten years and control techniques involving the use of direct size measurements with reliable on-stream sizers have been Ignored.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype cross well acoustic logging system and complementary tomogr`aphic image reconstruction software for the detection and delineation of abandoned underground mines and associated subsidence failure in relatively shallow environments. The logging system uses a piezoelectric, cylindrical bender as an acoustic source. A triaxial accelerometer assembly, designed to be rigidly locked in the borehole, is the receiver portion of the logging system. Both the source and receiver probes operate at high frequencies, thus providing short wavelengths capable of resolving small features in most rock types. A modified van with a dual-drum wireline winch, 4-channel data acquisition system, power amplifiers, and waveform generator supports field operation of the logging system. A field study was conducted at a test site in San Antonio, Texas, to demonstrate the cross well acoustic logging system. The underlying rock at the test site is similar to stratified sediments in coal measures. First- arrival travel times were interpreted by tomographic reconstruction of the velocity field in the two-dimensional cross section between the source and receiver boreholes. The resulting image correlates well with geological borehole logging data for the test site.

Silver-lead mineralization at Indooroopilly, Queensland, extends upwards from Upper Triassic rhyolite which intrudes phyllite-containing Palaeozoic mineralization.Sulphides and magma were emplaced in a special structural site which underwent dilational fracturing while surrounding rocks were block-faulted and compressed. This site lies at tbe intersection of dykes, faults, and a lineament adjacent to a Middle Triassic granitic stock.Structural controls at Indooroopilly are attributed to the effects of piston faulting. Exploration for similarly controlled deposits should be directed towards structural intersections near stocks or batholiths which have intruded mineralized belts. Priority should be given to structural intersections which were sites of block-faulting and igneous activity under compressional tectonic conditions.Favourable sites lacking surface mineralization may contain ore at depth as piston faulting produces 'blind' ore deposits.
