Canadian mining research has recently been reinvigorated through a pan-Canadian research strategy driven by the industry, the research community and government departments. These organisations have come together to form the Canada Mining Innovation Council, whose role is to focus and increase mining research in the country. One of the major themes of the organisation is environment; including major research initiatives on energy, tailings and environmental stewardship. Other major initiatives on exploration, mineral extraction and mineral processing will also consider environmental benefits in the research projects they undertake. All the initiatives have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. Membership to date includes most of the major mining companies operating in Canada and almost all of the mining-related universities. This paper describes how water is being planned, managed and used in Queensland as both a precious natural resource, vital for healthy ecosystems, and as a valuable tradeable commodity, necessary to secure economic prosperity. Queensland has been progressively implementing a planned package of water industry improvements agreed by the Council of Australia Governments in 1994. The Water Act 2000 provides the legislative basis for implementing the COAG water reform framework in Queensland and sets out statutory water planning processes. A Water Resource Plan (WRP) is a strategic document that specifies water sharing and environmental flow outcomes across a whole catchment over a period of up to ten years. A Resource Operations Plan (ROP) sets out the details of implementing a WRP, including environmental flow rules, establishment of tradeable water allocations that are separate from land, rules for water trading, rules for operating water infrastructure, arrangements for the release of any unallocated water identified in the WRP, and requirements for monitoring and reporting. Water Resource Planning and Resource Operations Planning are progressing in priority catchments and aquifers across the State. Ways to obtain a water entitlement now depend on whether a WRP and/or a ROP exist in a particular catchment. Water trading provides for the buying and selling of water entitlements on a permanent basis where permitted under a ROP. Details of tradeable water allocations are securely registered on the Water Allocations Register, which is similar to a land titles register. Leasing and temporary transfers of water entitlements are also possible. Water brokers are emerging to facilitate water trading which aims to improve water use efficiency and move water to higher value uses. Queensland is leading the way in the implementation of the COAG water reform framework and the pursuit of sustainable water resource management. The StateÆs progress in this regard is increasing certainty for water users, while ensuring that considerations of equity amongst existing and future users and amongst various uses, as well as considerations of ecological sustainability and the wider community, are all taken into account. The mining sector stands to benefit substantially from these new approaches to planning, managing and using this precious resource.

Deposits of manganese oxides and silicates in the Tamworth area were re-examined. The major deposit at Danglemah consists chiefly of rhodonite and the rare silicate tephroite. It is considered that the manganese was deposited with the original sediments, the silicates being formed later during the intense folding and low-grade metamorphism of the enclosing rocks.INTRODUCTIONMany small deposits of manganese oxides and silicates occur along a belt of eastern New South Wales and Queensland.Some fifty occurrences, most of which have been subject to mining activity, were described by Lloyd (1943) and some of this information was summarized by Knight (1947). The ores have been mined on a small scale since 1884. Small supplies of battery grade ore were won from a number of deposits, while larger quantities of metallurgical grade were sold to the steel industry. Maximum production was in 1918, when 6,500 tons were mined.The siliceous nature of many of the ores and their occurrence in the neighbourhood of granite batholiths led earlier investigators to consider the deposits to be of hydrothermal origin, associated with the granite intrusions. The present work questions this viewpoint.In this investigation, three of the chief deposits in the Tamworth area were seen. These were at Danglemah, which is being mined at present, and Mount Jasper and Manganese Mountain, which were mined in the past. New data on the geology of the Late Jurassic to Holocene sediments cover of the World and associated mineral resources (oil, gas, ferromanganese nodules, ores of massive sulphides and other metals) have been compilled in the Atlas at scale 1:25,000,000 and 1:10,000,000. The work was performed by scientists from four Institutes of Russia (VNllzarubezhgeologia, VNlloceangeologia, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Atlas shows variation of thickness and formational composition of the large complexes (Upper Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous- Eocene, Oligocene-Neogene, Pliocene-Pleistocene), distribution of oil/gas and ore deposits in each complex, data of deep- sea drilling (leg 1-130), thermo-pressure condition in the sedimentary basins within Circum-Pacific Rim.

The Banda arc, a U-shaped orogenic belt which separates oceanic crust of the Banda Sea from continental crust underlying the Australian- New Guinea shelf, has been interpreted to mark the convergent boundary between the northward-moving Indian Ocean- Australian plate and the Southeast Asian plate (Hamilton, 1979; von der Borch, 1979; Bowin et al., 1980). East of the island of Sumba (Fig. 1), the oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean has been completely subducted and Australian crust is now thrust under the Banda arc. Controversy has centered over the interpretation of the Timor trough as the surface location of subduction and the significance of the Savu Sea between Timor and Flores as either a forearc basin or the continuation of the Java trench (Karig et al., 1987). Two concentric island ridges, called the inner and outer Banda arcs (Hamilton, 1979), separate Australian continental crust from the oceanic crust of the Banda Sea (von der Borch, 1979) (Fig. 1). The inner arc is a typical volcanic island arc composed of calc-alkalic volcanic rocks of Neogene age, while older (Permian and younger) complexly deformed sedimentary and metamorphic rocks make up the outer arc. Timor is the largest and most extensively studied island of the outer arc and is separated from the inner arc by the Savu Sea. The triangular-shaped Savu Sea appears to be a complex forearc basin divided by a series of buried basement ridges (Karig et al., 1987). The mineral sands deposit of Australia pose a number of unique, and quite unusual problems for the explorationist. Most concentrations of heavy minerals have been found in the unconsolidated sediments of the east and west coasts. Mineral sands mines open larger areas per tonne of concentrate than most other mines. This is because of the shallow depth of the sands containing the heavy mineral concentrations. Obtaining tenure can, by mining industry norms, be a massive operation due to the large areas to be examined and, particularly on the east coast, the large number of land holders encountered. A commercial development can still emanate from anything ranging from a small high grade body to a massive low grade deposit, the prices currently being obtained for rutile, zircon, ilmenite and monazite, although still modest when the remarkable properties and applications of these minerals are considered, is nevertheless attractive when compared to the prices being obtained for the base metals with the exception of gold. The current interest in the location and definition of new reserves of heavy minerals reflects this relative price attractiveness. The discovery of heavy mineral concentrates does not necessarily ensure the early establishment of a mine. Because of the cyclical nature of market prices, the average returns likely over the life of the mine permit the employment of only relatively simple, low cost, mining, concentration, and separation processes. If difficult mining conditions are encountered or the removal of small contaminants by complex metallurgical processes are required, then higher market prices must be obtained. Until the market is prepared to pay more for the commodities so produced, the resource will not be economic and lower cost reserves will be mined in preference. The Australian mineral sands industry has seen many closed mines because of past failures to properly assess the data base collected during the exploration and development phases of the failed projects.

The effect of titania (TiO2 ) addition on the sintering performance of hematite iron ore has been studied by doping pure TiO2 into a sinter blend. The results of laboratory-scale compact sintering tests confirmed the considerable effect of TiO2 addition on sinter strength and mineralogy. The tumble index measurements confirmed an improvement in the strength of the sinter in response to TiO2 addition. The melting point of the sinter was also affected by increasing the TiO2 content, indicating a possible relationship between coke breeze consumption and TiO2 on industrial-scale sintering of Ti-bearing ores. Analysis of the sintered structures using optical and scanning electron microscopes confirmed a general improvement in the overall pore structure and sinter melt characteristics with the addition of TiO2 to the sinter blend. An important feature of the sinter structure was the formation of a perovskite phase (CaTiO3 ) and an increase in the proportion of this phase in the structure as TiO2 levels increase.CITATION:Dehghan-Manshadi, A, Manuel, J, Hapugoda, S, Ware, N and Donskoi, E, 2015. Valuers of mineral properties should be aware that accountants are a major user of their opinions of value. Reliance by accountants can range from obtaining comfort that book values in balance sheets are not overstated to establishing values by which to assess the fairness of a takeover offer. Accountants using mineral property valuations clearly can't be expected to have the same level of expertise as the valuer and ""second guess"" the valuation. But they do have an obligation, under the ASC guidelines and their own professional standards, to'check the logic and reasonableness of the valuation before being able to rely on it. This means reviewing the valuation report for general sensibility, discussing the methodologies and assumptions with the valuer and being satisfied as to his competence and independence. This paper outlines how accountants use mineral property valuations, the level of scrutiny applied to such valuations and the problems commonly encountered in practice by accountants seeking to rely on them. The paper also explains how values of-mineral properties are established in company balance sheets and why these often differ, quite validly, from fair market values.

Current best management practice requires the placement of a cover onto most types of mine waste including tailings, waste rock and/or spent heap leach rock at closure of the mine. The objectives of a cover system may vary from site to site but generally include dust and erosion control; chemical stabilisation of acid-forming mine waste (through control of oxygen ingress) contaminant release control (through control of infiltration); and/or provision of a growth medium for establishment of sustainable vegetation. In our experience, there has been a general tendency by stakeholders to develop performance criteria for cover systems, which are tied directly to these specific design objectives. In many cases, this practice has led to the development of single, often very conservative, numerical values of cover performance criteria such as ænet percolationÆ, ærate of oxygen ingressÆ and/or æplant density/mixtureÆ. In our opinion, there is a need to develop cover performance criteria on a case-by-case basis and with due consideration of the short-term and long-term impacts on the receiving environment at a particular site. This paper puts forward a methodology for developing site-specific performance criteria for a cover system designed to isolate acid-forming mine waste and to control acid rock drainage. The proposed methodology links the predicted performance of a cover system to groundwater and surface water impacts. This way, the appropriate level of control (of oxygen ingress and/or net percolation) required by the cover system can be determined. A case study is presented that illustrates the application of the methodology proposed in this paper.

This paper introduces a novel roll crusher design, which incorporates non-cylindrical crushing rolls. The use of non-cylindrical rolls enables the crusher to achieve a greater reduction ratio than is possible with conventional roll crushers. Referred to as the NCRC (non-cylindrical roll crusher), the new crusher incorporates two rolls comprised of an alternating arrangement of plane and convex or concave surfaces. The two rolls are complementary and arranged so that when they rotate the convex and concave surfaces of each roll are substantially opposed. With the rolls rotating in opposite directions at the same speed, this arrangement produces a gap between the rolls that remains approximately constant. Discontinuities on the roll surfaces provide improved angles of nip, which increase the probability of larger particles being drawn into the crusher. Initial tests on a scale prototype of the NCRC have indicated that reduction ratios exceeding 10:1 are achievable.

Segnit's article puts forward the views that the rocks associated with the Broken Hill lode are simply highly metamorphosed sediments, tbat metasomatism on a large scale was not an important factor at Broken Hill and that the rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.In particular, the garnet quartzite, the most abundant rock in the limited section of the mine examined by Segnit, is described by him as a simple, metamorphosed manganiferous sediment.These views, while consonant with those of H. F. King (1958), are drastically opposed to those of myself and others e.g. Gustafson et al. (1950, p. 1383) who state that the most extensive hydrothermal alteration in the district is in and close to the zinc lodes in the Zinc Corporation and New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. mines. Segnit's conclusions conflict with 1. the absence of any manganiferous sediment in the Broken Hill district except in close proximity to the lode,2. the clear cut metasomatism of the dolerite dykes which indicates that the ore is younger than the dykes and therefore post-metamorphism, and 3. the petrofabric study of den Tex (1958) which provided independent evidence that the ore in its present form post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area.The original sediments of the district were mudstones and calcareous sandstones with 2 to 5 per cent CaO. The underground mine environment is inherently complex and hazardous, which necessitates ensuring mining workers’ safety. With the fast development of AI techniques, human activity recognition has become a crucial task to enhance daily life, especially in such challenging settings. This enables automatic monitoring and detection of the mine workers’ activities and operations on a large scale, which leads to better support of workers’ safety and welfare. Existing traditional uni-modal approaches, which use data of one single modality, suffer from low data quality and noise, so they struggle to generalise effectively in such extreme conditions (Li et al, 2022). As underground mines have extreme and complicated environments, such as dust, low light, signal interference, and rugged terrain, uni-modal approaches could not resolve such obstacles and are not suitable for real-world deployment. Multi-modal human activity recognition approaches could use data from multi-modal sources, thus capturing complementary information and producing robust and effective performance in recognising and monitoring mining activities. In this case, designing suitable multi-sensor hardware and AI activity recognition models has become a pivotal task. Producing efficient multi-modal approaches for edge deployment is another problem worth exploring.

The current talk of risk management as a separate discipline and management function is like earlier imposition of Quality Control (QC) as an overlay on shoddy production management. Risk management is vital, but is integral in the way we marshal our staff, make decisions, then monitor and review and make crucial secondary decisions. New leaders must not assume that hiring experts ensures good decisions. It is only the essential step one. The worst company I worked for had more expertise than the best. The difference was in culture and decision-making processes. Failed feasibility studies, persistent technical factions in a company that cancel each other, heaps of expert consultant reports piled up like a dump of bricks, even great but half-managers in large and small companies cancelling expertise at their disposal, are the worst manifestations. Just daily foul-ups are common even amongst smart people. We miners have made a great industry but are content to drift far below excellence, even where that word is bandied around. All the management literature and management courses will not right the situation û we have been sending budding managers to this good stuff for two generations and the effects are worthwhile but marginal. A few key ideals, ideas and slogans are not the way. These make inspiring books that work about as long as the Christmas spirit does in the real world. What we need is a coachesÆ manual and a standard of the essential package of culture and work processes that make excellence possible and show how to maintain it long term. It has not been written until now because most managers want to remain dilettante amateur managers without the discipline that creates excellence. First, believe excellence is possible and worth any effort; then commit to it.

The current approach to the design of fill, as a structural component in a mining system, is based on traditional usage, previous experience, empirical rules and preconceived ideas. This approach does not permit the relative economicsof the various possibilities to be evaluated, retards introduction of new materials or processes, and results in fragmented fill research effort.A rational approach to the design of fill is proposed as a means of overcoming these disadvantages.This is based on five components:(a) statement of functions of fill,(b) definition of modes of fill response,(c) criteria of satisfactory performance,(d) analysis of fill response,(e) specification of required fill properties and methods of obtaining them.An assessment of each component indicates that the adoption of this rational design approach will require research effort in categorising modes of fill response and in defining criteria of satisfactory performance.

Analysis of the 2001 Australian census data set can be used to gain a detailed insight into the trends and levels of employment in different industry sectors. There is a common perception that employment of geoscientists within the mining industry and indeed across all industries has decreased significantly. However, the data shows that the number of individuals stating that they are geoscientists employed across all industries has decreased by only five per cent from 5336 in 1996 to 5067 in 2001. Within the mining industry (Australia and New Zealand Standard Industrial ClassificationÆs û ANZICÆs mining class), the number of geoscientists employed has decreased by ten per cent from 2701 in 1996 to 2441 in 2001. These figures, while showing a decrease, do not reflect the magnitude of the decrease commonly perceived. However, further analysis shows the number of geoscientists employed in mineral exploration may have decreased significantly more.

Many coal mine operators have responded to economic pressures by massive investment in machinery to reduce unit costs. To sustain the increased production which must justify the expenditure it is essential to know the resource in great detail months or even years in advance of its extraction. The required detail includes variations in composition and any lateral disruptions to the seam which night affect production. As Wilson (1985) has pointed out, a day's production loss can mean half a million dollars income forgone, and an unexpected major fault can mean a shutdown of weeks. Traditionally, seams were probed by surface drilling on (typically) 250 or 500m centres, and by horizontal drilling from sithin'the seam. Core was analysed chemically. The new generation machinery cannot tolerate the risk attendant on such widely spaced sampling, but the costs of much closer sampling rapidly become prohibitive.

On account of the increased work required from the assay office, owing to the large additions which have been made to the smelting and superphosphate plants during the last few years, it was found necessary to build a more extensive and up-to-date assay office than the one that had been in use since the starting of the works some twenty years back.A site was chosen adjacent to the main office, so as to be free from smoke and dust.. The building is constructed of red brick, the over-all dimensions being 109 ft. x 37 ft. The roof is of fibrous-cement slates, 31 ft. high, with a two-to-one rise, and overlaps the walls to the extent of 4 ft. 6 in. on all sides.Special care was taken to give light to all working benches, fume cupboards, and balance rooms. The main chemical room occupies the entire western end of the building, and the fire room the entire eastem end. Between these two rooms are the superphosphate, refinery, and gold-parting rooms on one side of the central passage, and three balance rooms, general office, and cloak room on the other side. The height of the roof affords ample space above these central rooms for storage purposes, and also maintains a fairly even temperature. The ceiling of the main chemical and fire rooms is carried immediately under the slates, which gives a total height in the centre of about 25 ft.

During the last decade the proper training of operating and maintenance staff has been recognised as directly contributing to the successful startup and continuing operations of a metallurgical project. During this period Bechtel has assisted clients in the design, development and implementation of such training. The clients have been located in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Africa, China and North America. The programmes have addressed mobile and fixed plant operations and maintenance in coal, copper, gold, borax and other mining environments. The level of sophistication has varied from highly structured and documented instruction to less formal, yet controlled efforts to reorient and enhance the skills of experienced workers to training personnel with no previous work experience. Many lessons have been learned, some easier than others. This presentation will recount the elements of various projects which enhanced and detracted from the cost-effective achievement of the goals which training was

Since the earliest recorded prospecting of the 1860's mineral exploration and mining in Fiordland has been discouraged by the formidable physical difficulties presented by its isolation, extremely rugged relief, treacherous coastal waters and generally unfavourable weather conditions. Government assistance was often sought by the miners and prospectors but little, if any, support or encouragement was received after the initial period. During the 1840's decorative marble was quarried at Caswell and Dusky Sounds. A prospector discovered and attempted to mine copper sulphides to the north of Dusky Sound (Parks Mineral Beds) and near Mt Solitary. A small Pb, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au bearing quartz reef was discovered and driven on in the granite coast line of Preservation Inlet (Bradshaws Reef) and the ore roasted on site. Alluvial and quartz lode gold was discovered at Preservation Inlet in the 1890's and led to the recorded recovery of 11 000 oz of mainly lode gold. Falloff in grades with depth, thinning and splitting of the reefs and the high mining costs at this location led to a virtual abandonment of the field by 1906. In the late 1950's and early 1960's the geology of Fiordland was mapped by the Geological Survey at 1:250 000 scale, but field work was largely confined to the shore lines of the coast and fiords. In view of the physical difficulties it is not surprising that mineral exploration and mining up to 1970 was limited to the scant attention outlined above.
