æMining + Health in DevelopmentÆ is a project funded by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC, 2012) to develop a centralised database of corporate sustainability initiatives for managing and improving occupational and public health, based on information extracted from social and environmental reports of major mining, oil and gas (MOG) companies. This register of materials has the potential to increase stakeholder awareness of the unique health risks impacting the minerals industry, employees, their families and surrounding communities, as well as to inform stakeholders on global industry approaches to health management.Data and preliminary outcomes from analysis of different MOG corporate sustainability reports on public health and disease management are presented for six African countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique, Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and six Asia-Pacific countries (Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Vietnam).With the minerals industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, including continuous expansion into developing regions, the æMining+Health in DevelopmentÆ project will inform industry, civil society and regulators of current health management practices and programming among the different sectors of the minerals, oil and gas industries and across various regional operations. At the Kristineberg mine in northern Sweden sulfide-rich, poorly buffered tailings have been deposited in five impoundments located along a valley. The tailings area has been remediated by applying a combination of till cover and flooding. A new method that has been applied to parts of the tailings area is to raise the groundwater table to saturate the tailings. By increasing pH by liming, thereby reducing metal mobility, a water-covered downstream impoundment is functioning as a trap for metals released from the till-covered impoundments upstream. In this paper the efficiency of the system approach used at Kristineberg is evaluated. Progressive changes of water quality from groundwater in the upstream till-covered impoundments via surface streams within the pond system to the water in the flooded downstream pond and its outlet are described. The results show that the system approach used in the design of the remediation programme of the tailings works as planned. The sulfide oxidation rate has decreased in the till-covered impoundments, and, as predicted, there is an out-flush of old weathering products which will continue for at least five years before equilibrium is reached. The groundwater in the till-covered impoundments has high concentrations of Fe, S, Mg and Zn, but the concentrations of metals such as Cu, Cd and Pb are much lower than before the till cover was applied. The limed pond is an efficient metal trap, with concentrations as high as 2.76 per cent Zn and 0.28 per cent Cu in the calcite-gypsum sludge developed on the tailings. The outlet from the flooded pond, and thus from the whole mining area, releases small amounts of metals to the recipient in comparison to the amounts that are in movement within the mining area. During the period May to November, 13 kg dissolved Zn and 111 kg particulate Zn was released to the recipient, whereas a total of 27 000 kg was transported by surface water within the impoundment system during the same period. The results from Kristineberg show that when planning remediation of complex mining areas, it is useful to adopt a system approach in which different methods are used on different parts of the area along the flow path of the drainage water, whereas flooding of the downstream pond is the key to the performance of the entire system.

The mining industry has been rightly proud of its environmental achievements and it would be fair to say that in some areas the Australian mining industry is at the forefront of world practice in environmental management and mine rehabilitation. The `environment' has certainly been a growth area over the past three decades with growing awareness in the 1960s, some large battles and the of significant legislation in the 1970s. The most important period however has been the 1980s and so far the 1990s where, in addition to the of some more rigorous legislation, we have seen the practical application of environmental management/rehabilitation Techniques.

A formalised approach to risk management has been regulated in the United Kingdom (UK) since the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (CDM) came into force in 1995. These regulations have recently been revised in 2007. In response to a series of significant claims around the world the UK insurance industry published a code of practice for risk management of tunnels in 2003, and that was followed by an international version in 2006. Probably one of the main contributions of this new approach is the recognition that health and safety risks can best be addressed early in the process, initially by the owner and then by the designers. One of the aims is to achieve elimination of risks by good design. The advantage of a risk-based approach to tunnel design is that all risks are considered explicitly, and any residual risks in the design are communicated clearly to the construction team. This paper looks at the implementation of this formalised approach to risk management with reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. The design has been undertaken in accordance with the requirements of the CDM regulations, and also in compliance with the Joint Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works in the UK. An outline of the risk-based design process used is provided, including examples.

The Bendigo Goldfield is located in the state of Victoria, Australia, and is one of a number of fields that make up the Central Victorian Goldfield. Since 1993, Bendigo Mining NL has been carrying out an extensive re-evaluation of the goldfield and is currently well advanced in developing an underground mine. The sediment-hosted auriferous quartz reefs are structurally complex and closely associated with anticlinal axes and reverse faulting. The gold within the quartz reefs is characterised by both its coarse nature (100 up to >5000 ¦m) and its erratic distribution; as a result, the Bendigo Goldfield is classed as an extreme nugget effect system. This characteristic ensures that the Bendigo mineralisation is very challenging to sample and evaluate. In this case, diamond drilling is a good measure of structure and geological continuity, but a poor measure of grade and grade distribution. Drilling, combined with on-reef development, bulk sampling and detailed geological studies are required for resource evaluation. For grade control a balance has to be sought between sample representativness, cost, turn around time and practicality. Extreme nugget effect deposits like Bendigo, require the use of bulk samples in order to be representative. However, the cost and turn around time is significant. As a result, a micro-bulk sampling system has been introduced that attempts to overcome these problems by providing a fast, practical method that can define ore from waste. Bulk sampling and on-vein development are still necessary for resource and reserve estimation.

This is a question that will be asked many times and by many individuals during the various evaluation stages of any new project. However, the question itself will often have different connotations to the different groups invariably involved in such an exercise. As examples, consider just three of the several different groups involved in the development of a new mining project - Financiers, Consulting Engineers and the Sponsors of the project (potential borrowers). To the Financiers, a 'bankable project' will be one against which they will be prepared to lend funds (but not necessarily all of the funds requested by the Sponsors). This usually means that in the first instance the technical information presented to the bank has satisfactorily covered all of the requisite areas to the levels of accuracy required. More importantly, the financial evaluation of the projected economic performance of the mine, as a whole, is considered sound and a set of arrangements under which the bank is prepared to advance loan funds have been structured which fully satisfy the bank's credit criteria. To Consulting Engineers preparing a feasibility study (or a part thereof), on behalf of the project Sponsors, the term 'bankable' invariably only refers to the technical completeness and the level of detail contained in the report which they are preparing. Their scope of work will not necessarily have been broad enough to fully satisfy a bank's requirements. It is unusual to see any specific references to overall project viability or profitability in Consulting Engineers' feasibility reports, other than those which are automatically associated with the use of the term 'ore'.

This paper will present a series of examples drawn for a number of Australian and international mining companies showing their recent attempts at optimisation of capital. The results will be compared, contrasted and discussed in the light of six factors that are considered crucial to any analysis of this subject. The factors are: ò the market availability of capital ò the corporate strategy and performance ò the capital structure appropriate to the corporate positioning within the industry ò the parties to the optimisation equation ò the measurement of success of optimisation The factors above are not mutually exclusive and are generally interdependent so their order above is of little consequence. Other papers presented at this conference will dwell in more depth on all these factors, therefore this paper shall focus only on the key elements of each factor. By way of summary this paper will also address the issue of the longevity of optimisation - is it temporary or long term.

Mary Kathleen Uranium Ltd. recommenced operations in early 1976 following a twelve year period of care and maintenance. Several sections of the plant were modified or completely changed for the second operation. The most important change was the replacement of ion exchange with solvent extraction as the means of purifying and upgrading uranium rich Isolutions Most of the problems experienced in the solvent extraction system originate from the leach liquor which has a strong tendency to form stable emulsions. This has been countered by some careful control of leaching conditions and by closer observation of operations in the solvent extraction area. Most problems have now been resolved and plant recoveries are quite Satisfactory.

ICI Australia has been developing PC-based software to assist the blast engineer to design and monitor open pit blasts. The scope of this software differs significantly from commercially available mine design packages.The software is designed for routine use in a normal production environment. The system enables the engineer to produce practical documents which include: a drilling plan, a loading sheet, a hook-up diagram, an inventory of explosives and auxiliary items, and other data on the blast such as tonnages and powder factors.

I would like to build on the keynote address given by Peter Stoker to the Fourth International Mining Geology Conference (2000) entitled æThe Role of the Mine GeologistÆ. He concluded that à the important aspects of the professional contribution of a mine geoscientist to a mine operation include: The geoscientists prime task is to maximise the profitable extraction of the ore deposit on which they are working û that is to add value. They must maintain and develop their own expertise. By ensuring a truly professional approach to all they do, they will provide the best service to the community, to their company or client, their shareholders and their family or close associates. In that process they will also assist in protecting themselves in this increasing litigious world. I intend to build on these points and, in particular to expand on what it really means to take a truly professional approach to mine geology. Mine geology is different from other forms of geological practice. As a mine geologist you are the advocate for the orebody. After all the orebody is the one thing that is unchangeable.

Multiple regression analysis applied to ventilation records of stopes on the Witwatersrand showed that it was possible to estimate the temperature increase per 100 ft for a new stope with a standard deviation of 0' 5°F. The analysis also threw light on the relative effect on this estimate of five different factors.Application of the analysis of variance technique to a factorialexperiment on the production of dust during rock drilling showed that the effects of air and water pressure were quite small but also showed that the between-machine variation was unexpectedly large.Analysis of variance also proved a valuable means for assessing the bias and random error variation of aneroid barometers used in pressure surveys.INTRODUCTIONThree examples are discussed to illustrate the use of the techniques of "analysis of variance" and "multiple regression" in research on the ventilation of gold mines. Although the techniques are basically similar their application to each example has a slightly different emphasis and the examples were chosen for this reason. The variation ofemphasis is as follows.1. Temperature increases in stapes. This work was undertaken as a preliminary to possible extensive controlled experimentation (Lambrechts, 1959). Data collected in routine work by the mine ventilation personnel were used for analysis and no specific experiments were carried out. The main object was to see whether such data could provide any strong pointers to factors which might be worthy ofmore careful study and to factors which could initially be ignored. Of course, there was hope that the study might provide an empirical formula for rough forecasts.

Regional-scale exploration for sediment-hosted gold deposits is hampered by the challenge of evaluating the fertility of ancient sedimentary sequences that host these deposits. Recent developments in laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry allow for the evaluation of the gold fertility of sedimentary sequences using chemistry of early-formed sedimentary pyrite. We present a case study from the Selwyn basin area of Yukon, Canada, where significant sediment-hosted gold exploration has been ongoing for the last five years. Data from sedimentary pyrite in some Neoproterozoic shales are anomalous in Au and As compared to a global data set of unmineralised sedimentary pyrite. If at least some of the gold and associated trace elements in sediment-hosted gold deposits are derived from recrystallisation of early sedimentary pyrite, it follows that strata containing anomalous sedimentary pyrite should be more prospective. Based on this premise, our data clearly show that Yusezyu Formation Neoproterozoic shales in the Selwyn basin area of Yukon are a fertile source rock for sediment-hosted gold deposits, while pyrite from Nadaleen formation shales are strongly anomalous in Hg and Tl, but not Au. Mine scheduling is a process which represents what happens in a mine over time. An optimised plan involves selecting the best workable plan which meets a stated objective. This paper discusses some of the theory and philosophy behind mine scheduling and explains how scheduling is a step in the total iterative mine planning process. Several schedules may be necessary before arriving at a mine plan which can be considered optimal. A description of broadbrush and detailed scheduling is given and the features of computer assisted scheduling are also described. The use of mathematical modelling techniques in conjunction with scheduling to optimise the mine plan is explained. The need to incorporate these techniques to optimise the whole mining system rather than only a part, is emphasised.

The development of the Yallourn East Field brown coal open cut has involved the adoption of novel investigational programs into coal qual- ity. For example, weighted average coal property statistics for key proper- ties are determined by using a unique blend of traditional and 3-dimensional geostatistical estimation. Predicted property values are made freely available from the mainframe computer in the form of kriged esti- mates of 60 000 tonne coal blocks. Geostatistical predictions are being incorporated within the Mincom/Intergraph CADD system which is used for mine design. Key properties relating to coal type, moisture, and ash have been evalu- ated to provide the required data for the design and operation of both the open cut and the power stations as well as the briquette plant.

The definition and recognition of silver minerals is very difficult. In general such minerals occur at low concentration and can be hard to identify and measure using conventional optical mineralogy. The present paper describes the use of the QEM*SEM system to tackle this problem and provide information of use to the metallurgist. Three aspects of QEM*SEM are used to special advantage in this application. Firstly the automated mode of operation is used to make a rapid search for the sparse phases. Secondly the X-ray capability is used to identify the mineral phases. Finally the image analysis programs quantify the distributions of the minerals which are found. The paper deals with the identification stage of the process and with the use of the data which can be derived. Silver minerals which covered a range of ore types and composition were collected and studied in detail. On the basis of these measurements and information received from a number of mining companies regarding the important minerals, a classification table was prepared. This table listed about 40 different silver mineral types which could be identified by QEM*SEM and which were of interest in silver recovery processes. Where the silver occurs in solid solution in concentrations greater than about one per cent, the silver content in the species was subdivided into ranges based on statistical intervals. The QEM*SEM system was programmed to recognise these as separate species. Examples are presented of the use of the system in defining the type and morphology of the silver mineralisation to assist in the assessment of batch flotation test Samples.

If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.

Stringent environmental benchmarks imposed by governments and successful legal challenges in the country of origin have changed the risk profile for all mining companies over recent years. In developing countries, however, where high government standards may not always be in place, direct community action has often made worthless substantial investments in otherwise viable mining operations. Real limitations are therefore imposed from these risks on all areas of mining activity, wherever they may be. Thus, the bar has been raised for all companies developing or operating mines. This paper argues real financial and global industry reputation benefits accrue when all known environmental risks, where practical, are managed. In response, among major international mining companies, as the industry moves towards greater global consolidation, senior management teams have increasingly adopted corporate governance standards including æTriple Bottom LineÆ (shareholder/government/community) sustainability reporting. Sustainability reporting is encouraged by improved international stockholder and financial investor perceptions by contributing to lowered social, community and geopolitical risk which lowers the cost of access to funds as well as improving staff morale and productivity. New mines must not only be primarily financially viable but must operate throughout in a sustainable way. Case studies of some recent mining operations, who have not foreseen or proactively managed major environmental risks, demonstrate the dire financial and personal implications for managers, directors and shareholders from not identifying and managing these environmental risks. Merely having a corporate policy statement on environmental standards or high level Government approvals process for a mining activity does not preclude mining operations from the risk of direct action by local populations or future adverse legal implications from risks which were perhaps identified but not mitigated effectively. Methods and processes for the identification and active management of environmental risks in the global arena are discussed to add a practical element to sustainability, based on the authors recent strategy development processes with governments and major mining houses such as BHPBillition, Rio and Xstrata. Emphasis is placed on proactive, innovative yet practical solutions which, where possible, show positive contributions firstly to the financial bottom line but also the community at large.

Supergene enrichment of ilmenite occurs through a complex series of reactions with initial oxidation and hydration followed by leaching and dehydration. Lateritization appears to be associated with the early phase of the supergene process and if ilmenite grains are encased in iron oxides no further alteration proceeds.

Proterozoic gold deposits in the Pine Creek Geosyncline are at present receiving renewed attention with the opening of old mines and several new discoveries. This important polymetallic province contains occurrences of gold, base metals, tin, tungsten, tantalum, platinum, palladium and aluminium. These resources have been exploited over the past century with periods of major interest during the turn of the century and during the past 20 years. Economically viable resources of predominantly gold, eg Pine Creek, Woolwonga, Brocks Creek and Union Reefs, and Ag-Pb-Zn, eg Woodcutters are currently in development or being mined. A variety of genetic models, ranging from magmatic through hydrothermal to syngenetic, have been postulated in the past for the formation of gold deposits in the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The first discussion on the regional geological factors that control ore deposition in the Brocks Creek-Howley District was by Sullivan and Iten (1952). They recognised that the most important ore deposits are associated with anticlinal and domal structures and that granites may be a controlling factor in the localisation of the mineralisation. More recently a group of authors, Needham and Roarty (1980), Goulevitch (1980), Nicholson and Eupene (1984), Sanger-Von Oepen, Friedrich and Kater, (1988), Nicholson and Eupene (1990) and Kruse, Whitehead and Mulder (1990) have suggested an exhalitive syngenetic origin, or remobilised syngenetic during dolerite intrusion and/or regional deformation, for gold mineralisation, especially those associated with South Alligator Group lithologies (eg Bridge Creek, Mt Bonnie group of mines and Cosmopolitan Howley). Studies carried out at the Bridge Creek and Western Arm Prospects over the last three years suggest that syngenetic models for gold mineralisation are less relevant to gold mineralisation in the Howley District than first thought (Wall, 1989; Partington, 1990). The Bridge Creek prospect has been cited as an example of a syngenetic-syngenetic remobilised deposit (Oepen, Friedrich and Kater, 1988) while the Western Arm prospect is more clearly a vein hosted epigenetic deposit and a comparison of the styles of mineralisation at both prospects will be made. The nature of the gold mineralisation at both prospects will be described and compared, and possible genetic models for gold mineralisation and their relevance to regional exploration discussed.
