The Ravenswood Batholith in the Charters Towers -Ravenswood area of north Queensland, was formed by three main episodes of granitoid emplacement between the Early Ordovician and the Early Permian. Granite to granodiorite plutons of the first phase of intrusions in the Early to Middle Ordovician, probably formed by partial melting of a thin continental crust as a result of the emplacement of mafic material derived from the mantle. Some of this mafic material subsequently intruded the Ordovician granitoids as gabbro to diorite complexes. The early granitoids were deformed and metamorphosed prior to emplacement of second phase granodiorite to tonalite plutons in the Late Silurian to Early Devonian. These later plutons have generally not been deformed or recrystallised. Geochemical and isotopic data suggest the Siluro-Devonian plutonism may have been generated by a partial melting of the tholeiitic material emplaced in the lower crust during the Ordovician. A third intrusive phase consists principally off Late Carboniferous to Early Permian gabbro-granite complexes, high level granite to granodiorite complexes, and rhyolitic plugs and diatremes near the batholith margin. Gold mineralisation in the batholith is associated with two major events: mesothermal vein formation in the Early Devonian and porphyry types in the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian.

Pyritic tailings from the Quirke mine waste management area in Elliot Lake, Ontario were subjected to long-term column leaching experiments in two PVC columns measuring 122 cm in height and 15.2 cm in diameter. At the end of the leaching experiments, the columns were taken apart and sampled at 5 cm intervals for quantitative mineralogical and geochemical characterisation. Each column is represented by a total of ten samples. Polished sections, prepared from the samples, were studied by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and X-ray diffraction techniques. Mineral quantities were determined based on linear mixing models of whole rock and mineral compositions. Pyrite particle sizes were measured by image analysis interfaced to an electron microprobe. The tailings are coarse-grained (ie 96 per cent passing 75 ¦m) and composed of quartz, K-feldspar, muscovite and pyrite. Pyrite is homogenous and occurs as liberated particles displaying angular to subangular boundaries with strong dissolution features at the end of the leaching experiments. Based on up to 3518 particles measured in a sample, pyrite particle sizes range from 1.7 to 78.6 ¦m. Pyrite concentrations vary from 0.1 to 7.8 wt per cent, depending upon their location from the top of the columns. These correspond to pyrite losses of up to 99 per cent from their original level of 7.2 wt per cent in the upper half of the columns. Pyrite oxidation rates in terms of moles of pyrite oxidised per mole of pyrite per square metre per second were calculated from the effluent data and the measured pyrite particle sizes. The rates vary from 1.71+10-12 to 5.78+10-10 mole+m-2+s-1 within the 1.5 to 3.5 pH range for 10 ¦m particles. These results are comparable with the published oxidation rates at pH 2 where the dissolved oxygen is the only oxidant.

The Olympic Dam Project constitutes a major resource of Copper and Uranium and has been under intensive evaluation since the discovery in 1975.A 500 metre deep rectangular shaft has been sunk into the deposit and this has been followed by 8400 metres of level, incline and decline development. 5 surface ventilation raises have also been constructed.Large scale trackless equipment is used to carry out the development, and productivity statistics are given.The paper describes the functionalised system used in the development program and discusses the maintenance support, and services required to carry out these works.The objectives of the Exploration Development program and the satisfactory results obtained from this work are also discussed.

Spoil piles are produced routinely in open cut coal mines. Spoil piles may contain waste coal and other carbonaceous horizons. Coal and carbonaceous materials react with oxygen in the atmosphere, producing heat. If the rate at which heat is generated is greater than the rate at which heat can be dissipated, the temperature of the spoil pile rises. If the heating remains unchecked, spontaneous combustion can occur. Spontaneous combustion poses significant safety, environmental and economic problems if it should become established in spoil piles. Using the basic features of self heating in spoil, the use of model is directed toward developing quantitative prediction of spontaneous combustion in open cut coal mine spoil Piles.

Discovered in 1896, the Sons of Gwalia orebody is located in a ductile mylonite zone within a sequence of Archaean pillow metabasalts and minor metasediments of greenschist facies which are variably sheared.The ore zone has good continuity, being 110 m wide and 500 m long, dipping 45 degrees east and plunging 70 degrees to the south to a depth of 1500 m downplunge. A strongly-developed foliation is present together with a prominent lineation paralleling the plunge. The mylonite zone consists of unmineralised chlorite schist and a 'U' shaped mineralised zone of chlorite-sericite schist with varying amounts of quartz-carbonate as veins parallel to foliation, boudins, and locally as massive quartz-carbonate. Pyrite is the dominant sulphide present.Grade control utilises RC holes on a 10 m x 10 m pattern, with infill blast rig holes 5 m deep where necessary.Some visual control of ore boundaries is present and, combined with good ore continuity and a knowledge of the structure of the orebody, enables cost-effective grade control to be achieved. To-date, over three million ounces of gold have been produced from the orebody.

The Hemersley Ranges are located in the North West Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21¦ 30! to 23¦S and longitudes 117¦ to 120¦E. Their mean height above sea level is'. 2,000 feet, and they rise from 600 to 800 feet. above the gen- eral level of the tableland which extends south-east from the coastal town of Roebourne.. Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 feet above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, dry during the greater part of the year, which have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of orocidolite outcrop. The presence -of the mineral was first recorded in 1917., but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when reports of a strong market demand for-croeido lice resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Daleis Gorges. . It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi- Wolli Springs north-west to Millstream Station, i.e.,-over a.:length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. A number of attempts were made to develop aid treat the Yampire and Wittenoom'Gorge deposits from 1938 onwards, but, for a ,variety of reasons, none of these-proved successful. Current production,. is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Limited at Wittenoom Gorge. This company commenced operations at the Wittenoom Mine in 1946, with an output of 601.8 long tons of- fibre,. and later transferred tb the Colonial Mine about one mile to the north-west. Output has been increased steadily to an' average of 12,000 to 14.,000.. long tons; per annum over the past six years. The total Western Australian output to the end of 1962 is reported by the Mines Department as 110,013 long tons valued at úAl2,403,728..

Increasingly, consideration is being given to the nominal `outcomes' of degree courses in engineering, including mining engineering. These are concerned not only with knowledge and technical understanding but also with capabilities in the professional application of engineering principles to problem solving, multi-disciplinary teamwork, communication and life-long learning. This paper discusses concepts of education, professional formation and training and the associated development of competencies in applying knowledge, understanding and technical insights and skills to new situations. In developing guidelines on preferred attributes and competencies in graduate mining engineers, a survey was conducted of a range of industry personnel involved in selecting graduate mining engineers. The results not only clarified the spectrum of competencies sought but also provided valuable detailed views to assist in defining a mining engineering curriculum. Considering a greater concern with the development of more `well-rounded' graduates, the implications are discussed with regard to teaching and assessment activities and the time demands on academic staff when a `coaching' role is emphasised. In line with international and Australian moves in engineering education, notions on education of mining engineering graduates in Australia are under review. The results will provide continuing challenges to all involved.

Several case studies are examined in which analysis of treated ores and extracted metal species by Mossbauer spectroscopy provides information not available by other competing techniques. The cases include poorly crystalline, surface iron oxides in titanium minerals and chalcopyrite, gold in ores and bacterially oxidised ores and the adsorbed species from gold extracted from cyanide and chloride solutions onto activated carbon and polyurethane foams. Some limitations on the use of the technique in terms of sample size, sensitivity and counting time are also discussed.

Efficient performance of pulp lifters to discharge ground rock is critical to the effective performance of SAG and AG mills. The paper covers developments in the design of pulp lifters and associated grates, of both conventional straight-radial and curved types, and of the inner discharge cone. Issues covered include the discharge performance of both the slurry and rock components of the discharge, reverse flow back into the mill through open grates and backflow down the pulp lifters of material that fails to discharge from the mill. The design experience is interpreted in the light of developments in particle flow modelling of the flow of charge in pulp lifters.

The investigations of the Leningrad ruining lilstitute on this problem are carrying out in the following main directions: 1) The analysis and study of contaminants migration at particular sites of mining development; 2) The working out of theoretical and me- thodical basic principles of aquifers migration tests; 3) The work- ing out of methods of the forcasting of groundwater pollution pro- cesses; 4) The theoretical and uethodical substantiation of hydro- geological observations of groundwater pollution processes; 5) The wort ing out of the measures at the groundwater control and their rational use at the particular sites of mining development. The research that have been carried out by the present moment have covered the wide range of wining and geological conditions -- as from the point of view of specific genetic types of water-be- aring rocks (porous, fissured and fissured-porous), as well as from the point of view of pollution sources (surface waste water basins and underground basins of non-standard water) and the cha- racter of the latter's migration (tracers, physically neutral ef- fluents, heavy or light ones). The combination of specialized mi- gration tests and observations carryed out at uoayi, sites, as well as the following ar~,alysis o:i the data of field study allowed to get useful theoretical, methodical and practical results on the all directions above mentioned, ns the summing up of these results the author proposed the concept of controlled ground :ester polluti on. Since early 1971 Western Titanium N.L. has been operating an ilmenite upgrading plant on a commercial basis at Capel, Western Australia. In their process ilmenite is pre- oxidized, then reduced in a rotary kiln to a mixture of metallic iron and titanium oxides. The iron is leached out by accelerated rusting in aerated water, leaving a product with titanium content, expressed as Ti02, of about 92%. Samples from different stages of the up- grading process, representing operations over the last two years, have been studied in detail by X-ray diffraction methods, and the sequences of phases and reactions occurring have been determined. Quantitative X-ray studies showed the ilmenite feed materials to consist of a mixture of ilmenite and pseudo- rutile. Pre-oxidation of the ilmenite at =1000¦C leads to the formation of rutile plus a Fe2TiO5-FeTi205-Mn2TiO5 solid solution. The final reduction product consisted of a mixture of metallic iron, reduced rutile and a FeTi05-MnTi205-Ti305 solid solution. The relative amounts of these reduction products were very sensitive to the initial concentra- tions of the minor constituents manganese and magnesium. The effects of variation of ilmenite feed rate, reducing atmosphere,- reduction temperature and controlled addition of magnesium were also studied.

When driving mine roadways in the vicinity of tectonic disturbances and fault zones, sudden outbursts of gas, along with ejections of fine coal, occur. Substantial dynamic changes occur around the roadways in the coal and around the support. The problem has several aspects. Studies have been carried out on the technical analyses of the phenomena which occurred in the Velenje Lignite Mine from 1957 to 1988. The second part of the investigation involves systematic laboratory studies of strength and deformability characteristics of lignite samples and "in-situ" measurements of stress changes during the driving of some roadways. Analyses of events (using the model of limit convergence and the finite element method) showed the possibility of gas outbursts, taking into account the deformability conditions when crossing over from compact lignite to the disturbed region. The rate of advance of roadways and the method of support strongly influence the occurrence of the phenomenon. The preventative measures used in driving roadways under such conditions include trial drilling and the use of blasting instead of machine cutting.

The Callie Underground Mine is located in the Tanami Desert 560 km Northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and is currently operated by Newmont Australia Limited with all mining activities carried out by Henry Walker Eltin. Callie was discovered in the region in 1991 with the box cut portal commenced south of the pit in 1995 and underground ore production commenced in 1998, after completion of the profitable Callie Open Pit. Development is currently occurring at depths of over 700 m with the decline currently below the 640 Reduced Level (RL) level (surface RL of 1400) with production haulage from 600 m below the surface. The combination of auto compression, a moderate geothermal gradient of 2¦C/100 m and diesel heat transfer causes the wet bulb temperature of intake air at the bottom of the mine to be typically 5¦C higher than on the surface. Wet Bulb temperatures can be up 5¦C higher again in active areas under secondary ventilation. During the 2002/2003 wet season many activities in the lower levels of the mine were stopped due to miners experiencing adverse heat related symptoms or the temperatures exceeding the Underground Heat Management Procedure stop job criteria of 32¦C wet bulb. To improve the working environment, combat the heat related illness and improve operational efficiency, a temporary 1.8 MW refrigerated cooling plant consisting of three 600 kW modules were installed underground to provide bulk air cooling for the lower levels of the mine during the 2003/2004 wet season. Several studies have been conducted in relation to future ventilation demands at Callie and all came to the conclusion, that some mine cooling will be necessary for Callie to meet the high production and development demands. This paper will describe the ventilation network at the Callie Underground operation focusing on the installation, operation and effectiveness of the temporary underground refrigeration plant.

The demand for iron ore has increased dramatically in the last years and is forecast to remain on a stable high production level for years to come. ItÆs expected that the world economy is facing a stable continuous growth of iron ore to two billion tonnes and more over the next decades (Beddows, 2007). Furthermore it is expected that the existing and known high-grade ore resources will decline, and the iron ore industry will be forced to implement more and more advanced beneficiation plants. As a consequence of the more complex beneficiation requirements, there will be a need for modern solutions for iron ore dewatering that are reliable mechanically as well as cost effective and with high capacity per unit at the same time. Conventional vacuum filtration methods have been the most prevalent in fine iron ore dewatering. Product quality needs, lower ore grades, complex mineralogy and energy costs have resulted in iron ore producers seeking better solutions for dewatering, in particular pelletising feed. New advanced filtration methods have been introduced to the market. This paper describes how these modern methods are answering the needs of the industry. Performance of advanced dewatering technologies (pressure filtration and ceramic capillary action filtration) for iron ore applications has been studied, and the findings are based on both industrial and pilot scale experiences on different materials. For example, the results show that the cake moisture content of iron ore pelletising feed can be optimised more effectively by using modern filtration technologies. By selecting the most suitable and adjustable equipment, the effects of variations of feed material on downstream processes can be minimised and the possibilities of processing more difficult raw materials to high-quality pellets are better. As such, this paper compares the new developments in this market area with the prevailing known vacuum filtration technology, but focuses on a comparison between capillary action filters and rotary vacuum disc filters (RVDF). The use of dolomite as a refractory began in England about 1870 when the basic Bessemer process for the removal of phosphorus from steel was developed by Thomas and Gilchrist.Knowledge of dolomite as a refractory in this country goes back to the early part of this century, at the time when the Hoskins Brothers took over the Lithgow Iron and Steel Works from W. Sandford. The practice then was toimport burned dolomite in casks from England. It is reported that much of the material was powdered when received, but was still serviceable. The earliest. used sources of local stone were in the Bathurst and Mudgee areas of New South Wales, and these dolomites were first used raw. Later, dolomite was burned in cupolas at Havilah near Mudgee, coke being obtained from the South Coast of New South Wales. This plant supplied burned dolomite to the Lithgow steel plant, later to the Australil1n Iron and Steel plant at Port Kembla, and also to the electric steel furnaces at Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne until the plant was closed down in 1946.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company first obtained its dolomite from George's Plains near Bathurst (this was, really a magnesium limestone) and later from Mount Knowles, a deposit near Mudgee, which was eventually taken over by the CO:plpany in 1918. Blasting represents one of the most relevant unit operations in the process of mineral extraction. The final objective of this operation is that of obtaining an adequate final fragment size distribution such that the combined costs of drilling, blasting, excavation and transport, and crushing/grinding, are minimised, while at the same time producing the minimum possible level of damage to the surrounding rock mass. The strong influence that drilling and blasting has over the subsequent processes involved in the operational cycle makes it imminently desirable to have access to experience and technology which make possible the evaluation and optimisation of this unit operation. The correct use of vibration monitoring techniques offers a number of benefits in terms of their ability to examine any blasting process in detail. In effect, the measurement of particle velocity levels that result from the detonation of each explosive charge offers a means by which it is possible to measure relative efficiency of each charge, interactions (productive and counterproductive) between adjacent charges, and a definitive indication of general performance of any given blast design and its implementation. In this way the monitoring of blast vibrations in rock due to the blast event, can be used as a diagnostic tool, given that the correct interpretation of the vibration traces allows the determination of the level of interaction between the design and operational variables of the blast event. This makes it possible to evaluate, for example, the presence of out of sequence detonations, statistical scatter in the detonation times of pyrotechnic delay detonators, deficient detonation of charges, instantaneous detonation of charges and sympathetic detonation of charges, as well as the general of vibration levels in terms of peak particle velocity, acceleration, and displacement. Another important use of such data is in the construction of a database relating vibration levels to charge weight, hole diameter, and distance, for any given rock type, enables the calibration of predictive vibration models which in turn make it possible to predict the damaging effects of blasting. Knowledge of both the vibration levels induced, combined with quantitative measures of the geomechanical competence of a rock mass make it possible to estimate the probability of producing blast induced damage. The high levels of vibration generated by some blast events may damage the rock mass, producing new fractures or extending and dilating existing fractures. The vibration in this context may be considered as a dynamic stress provoking strain in the rock mass. This paper describes the application of the vibration monitoring technique, particularly in the underground mining environment, and its importance in diagnosis, modelling, control, and optimisation of the development blasting process. The potential of the technique is assessed in the context of achieving substantial techno-economic improvements development blasting results, increasing output whilst minimising the operational costs of the mining process.

As a result of cheap Maui gas and plentiful hydro-electricity, over the past few decades New Zealand has enjoyed some of the cheapest energy of any OECD country. The situation is changing; at best we are facing some radical changes in energy use, at worst we are facing a crisis resulting from the following:   Cause 1: Maui gas will be exhausted by 2012. Distorted pricing and supply contracts; resulted in Huntly Power Station, a coal mine mouth generator running on 70 per cent Maui gas until very recently!   Cause 2: Investment in new generating capacity (and transmission) is woefully inadequate; as a result hydro lake levels are being continually pushed to the limits.   Cause 3: Distorted thinking is everywhere, for example; æWe will find more cheap gasÆ. æGas is clean û coal is dirtyÆ. Hot air  û ægreen alternatives such as wind generation will save usÆ. æNo NuclearÆ. The outcomes of the distorted thinking will be price increases, then shortages (there is nothing like "black-outs" to focus national thinking) and finally recession.   But what can NZ do? - Mine Coal. Coal jump-started the industrial revolution, it can provide the transition to post-gas and oil. NZ has the second highest reserves of coal per capita in the world, yet we use less that any other country with significant coal reserves. Our exports of our best coal have increased threefold, yet out own consumption has remained static at about 1-1.5 Mtpa for the last 30 years. Our coal is NZ owned and inexpensive relative to other energy sources, even allowing for infrastructure and environmental costs.   What can we do? We as mining professionals can promote informed responsible development and investment in the country's mining and energy business. We can galvanise public opinion on issues such as æunbundlingÆ our entire energy chain from mine-to generator-through transmission, even if the nuclear issue has to wait! With oil above US$70/bbl substitution is feasible. For individuals, there is always solar!

This study has considered the effect of mechanical shock on the resilience of the glass microspheres commonly used to sensitize an explosive emulsion. The damage to the glass microspheres caused by detonating cord, emulsion manufacture and the manufacture of the glass microspheres were considered along with the effect of sensitizer concentration on explosive performance. Reductions of up to 50% in the glass microsphere concentration of an emulsion explosive can result from poor initiation practice, such as the use of high strength detonating cord as downlines during initiation. Laboratory results suggest that detonating cords of strength greater than 3.5 g/metre should not be used as this can seriously affect explosive performance, particularly in small diameter charges. This reduced performance results from damage to the sensitizer elements and recrystallization of part of the emulsion phase.
