The control of mineral processing plants incorporates a number of off-line and on-line actions by plant personnel to obtain satisfactory plant performance. In general, off-line actions centre around intensive data analysis, while on-line activities are either automated control actions or prompted by qualitative interpretations of quantitative and qualitative information. Data sets obtained by various data logging devices and laboratory analysis of samples in many modem plants may be very large and are often unmanageable. This paper presents a method of analysing the data sets typically found in mineral processing, based on cluster analysis. The results of this analysis leads to a more complete understanding of operations in comparison with existing analysis tools used in mineral processing.Improved process configuration, optimised control strategies and in some cases, direct use of the results in monitoring process unit operations may be achieved.

When revegetation is a part of a rehabilitation strategy at mine sites in arid and semi-arid environments, its success can be strongly affected by the availability of water prior or during the time of seed dormancy, germination and early growth of seedlings. The semi-arid and arid environments of northern Australia are characterised by highly variable and erratic rainfall and hence the actual weather conditions at and around the time of germination and seedling emergence play a critical role in determining the success of plant establishment and the type of plant community that may develop.Using available climate data, an analysis has been undertaken and a set of indices has been developed which describe the suitability of the climatic conditions for rehabilitation. In total, eight sites from Queensland and one site from New South Wales, Australia have been analysed. It could be determined that regular rainfall and relatively short periods of water-deficit are key characteristics of climate suitability. A comparison of the locations studied allowed the separation into suitable and susceptible locations in terms of the availability of water, amount of rain and duration of drought between rain events.In our experience, specific estimates of climate suitability are rarely incorporated into the design of mined land rehabilitation programs. We consider that the regional intensity, seasonality and extremity of climate represent an overarching component of landscape complexity, which in turn will influence the development of post-disturbance ecosystems in these regions. This paper presents the outcome of climate analyses paired with the development of suitability indices. Australia has a high level of research and development capabilities in government, industry and tertiary institutions. In the- remote sensing fields, we have developed a range of applications in geology, agriculture, infrastructure and environmental monitoring which are very cost effective and applicable to projects in the Asian and Pacific region. Support by the Department of Science through the Scientific Industries Steering Committee has enabled rapid penetration of this technological capability into projects with significant economic and financial benefits. It has also led to the opportunity for development of new sensors and processing systems, through collaborative projects with regional countries, which. will have applications in cloud covered, rainforest, and coastal tropical regions for geological and resource applications.

You wouldnÆt start excavating before testing core samples, so why would you approve a project plan before all factors have been identified, reviewed and addressed? Even a champion sports team made up of the best players canÆt produce optimal results without a well understood and agreed game plan. Could an F1 racing team produce their outstanding performance without rigorous evaluation and testing of the factors for successful performance? Why would we expect a capital works project team to be able to get it right without an understanding and an involvement in setting and implementing the overall game plan and without an understanding of all stakeholder requirements? For International PowerÆs Hazelwood (IPRH) mine in Victoria, the challenge was development and delivery of a 40 year mine plan, ultimately involving relocation of existing mine operations into an adjacent new coal field, land acquisitions and major environmental and other approvals to allow diversion of three streams, a highway, an Over Dimension route and other infrastructure in a political and environmentally sensitive atmosphere. The lessons from International Power HazelwoodÆs (IPRH) experience are: that the clear set of project principles and guiding values ensured delivery of a robust plan; a robust plan can withstand significant change; and value management (VM) played an important role in providing assurance, to all, that the plan was sound at both the strategic and micro levels. This Hazelwood mine project included five major VM workshops. The first was a critical review process in addition to design and cost reviews. This VM workshop was used to analyse, at a high level, the preferred coal mining sequence and design concepts, together with the interaction between design elements, risks and costs. In addition to this, the workshop provided an agreed common pathway for all downstream decisions. A second VM study was conducted to ensure that the proposed plan and design for relocation of the conveying systems from the existing mine into the new field were planned for optimum achievement from a whole of life cost, time, operational and maintenance perspective, plus the logistics of continuing operations while relocating assets. A third study followed to review the Conveyor Transfer Alliance and review functional design. A fourth VM study workshop was formed at the start of Phase 2 Alliance to ensure that the best value for money was being achieved through the current design, schedule and project arrangements and that all interfaces between parties had been reviewed and responsibilities were clear and understood. Other studies are outlined later in this paper. This paper details the evaluation criteria and processes used in the project evaluation that led to the WestField Mine Development.

Diamond exploration in Queensland is influenced by the South African approach modified by the discovery of diamonds in Lamproite in Western Australia. The current approach is to explore for Kimberlite and Lamproite bodies using indicator minerals dispersed by fluvial and colluvial processes. In the north-west, diamonds are derived from kimberlitic and lamproitic sources, whereas those in the coastal and subcoastal areas of eastern Queensland are associated with xenoliths included in rocks formed during Cainozoic volcanism. In these areas, sapphire is commonly associated with diamonds. In New South Wales diamonds in economic quantities occur in alkali basaltic intrusions and a subduction model has been proposed for these occurrences (Barrows et al, 1996). Exploration for diamonds in Australia increased following the discovery and exploitation of the Argyle mine. State geological surveys have produced digital information on the local occurrences of diamonds. As part of the Smart Mining Initiative (2006 - 2010), the Geological Survey of Queensland compiled a database and report on microdiamonds and diamond indicator minerals from open file company exploration data from 1968 to 2008 from the Department of Mines and EnergyÆs QDEX system. Most exploration in Queensland was conducted with exploration for other commodities. There is no commercial exploitation of diamonds in Queensland and, to date, only rare occurrences of microdiamonds. There is a regional difference in diamond occurrences with the kimberlitic and lamproitic models favoured for the north-western regions of the State and the subduction (S-type model) favoured for the eastern coastal zone linked to Cainozoic alkalic basaltic volcanism. Further diamond exploration is warranted in Cainozoic basalt provinces along the eastern coastal and near coastal regions and in the north-west of the state in conjunction with airborne geophysics flown as part of current Departmental Smart initiatives. The Esperanza deposit is located 120 kin N of Mount Isa, Queensland at approximately lat 19¦20'S, long 139¦22'E on the Camooweal (SE 54-13) 1:250 000 scale map sheet. It is one of several structurally controlled copper ¦ cobalt deposits developed along the Mount Gordon Fault zone and related faults, within the Western Fold Belt of the Mount Isa Inlier (Figure 1). Together with the nearby Mammoth orebodies it forms the basis of the Gunpowder operation of Aberfoyle Limited. Until recently ore was mined from the Mammoth orebodies by open stoping with decline haulage to surface leach pads. Leaching of in situ broken ore (in place) and surface heaps, followed by solvent extraction and electro-winning (SX-EW), produced copper metal on-site. In March 1997, mining was suspended at Mammoth and the focus of the Gunpowder operation switched to development of the Esperanza orebody, which is expected to begin open cut production in mid 1998. SX-EW methods will produce 44 000 tpa of copper from an expanded plant. The pre-mining mineral resource at Esperanza (measured, indicated and inferred) is estimated at 4.6 Mt averaging 7.7 per cent copper.

The Mt. Tom Price orebody of Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited consists of a folded hematite - shale sequence capped by a layer of goethite. Consequently, variations in iron content occur within the orebody, and as the overall grade is below that required to make specification products, selective mining must be carried out. A necessary preliminary to quality control'of products based on selective mining is the production of advance data, on the tonnages and grades of material to be expected in future mining areas. Bench plans showing zones of different grades and types of material anticipated are prepared from structural geological information. The grades of materials on a bench are essentially governed by the positions and attitudes of the shale bands. Quality control is exercised by blending different grades and types of material in primary crusher feed. Iron grade is the prime grade consideration although sometimes the level of phosphorus content must be considered. Pre-production grades Are determined from assay of samples taken from blasthole cuttings.

The aquifer at Phosphate Hill, north-west Queensland, presents special management challenges. The site contains a phosphate rock mine, fertilizer plant and camp. All of the site water is provided by the Duchess Embayment Aquifer, located within the Burke River Outlier of the Georgina Basin. The Duchess Embayment is a triangular shaped, Cambrian marine sedimentary basin consisting of siliceous and calcareous phosphorites, shales, siltstones and sandstones. It is fault-bounded on all sides and has a regional dip of 5¦E. The aquifer is largely confined to the siliceous facies of the Beetle Creek Formation. It has a very flat potentiometric surface and an average thickness of 45 m with confining beds above and below. The siliceous facies derives from weathering of the calcareous phase and is highly transmissive while the calcareous zone itself contains less water and is dependent upon interconnecting fractures for its permeability. Recharge appears to occur where the siliceous facies crops out around the edges of, and within, the Embayment. Aquifer management issues revolve around two points: successful dewatering of the orebody for mining; and efficient management to maintain water quality and ensure supply over the predicted 30-year life of the project. Current operations are extracting water at levels much below that originally estimated. This is having a detrimental effect on mine dewatering with the SWL lowering at a rate slower than anticipated. As a result, ore parcels are now beginning to intersect the water table, providing a major constraint to the mining plan. The aquifer drawdown cone is extensive and very flat so to keep the water table at an appropriate level for mining the management plan will include more aggressive dewatering to lower the level of the entire aquifer. The additional water will either be disposed of downstream or stored in a holding dam or via the use of artificial storage and recharge. Water resource management will also need to maintain the current quality. About 37 per cent of the water currently extracted forms the low chloride supply required by the ammonia plant and the power station. This ratio is expected to remain applicable under any future operating conditions but the low chloride resource is restricted so will require prudent management to enable the supply to continue. At current usage rates aquifer recharge versus use will need careful monitoring to ensure that the resource remains viable in the long-term.

Strict adherence to prescribed parameters, optimum utilisation of man, machinery and operating supplies help in the smooth functioning of the plant and in achieving maximum gains.

Cominco Ltd's Polaris Mine in Canada's High Arctic has been successfully mining zinc ore in permafrost since 1981. Mining methods using frozen backfill have been the key to success. The mine is now producing about 60 per cent of the ore from pillars while maintaining high productivities. Annual ore production is just over one million tonnes providing more than 200 000 tonnes of zinc concentrate each year. Cominco Ltd has adapted management and operating practices to suit the harsh environment and the isolated site, and has shown that a profitable development can be carried out in the tough Arctic conditions, with minimum impact on the environment.

There are many variables in a flotation concentrator, some of which are outside the actual flotation stage, which affect metallurgical performance. The number of such variables which can now be measured on a continuous basis has increased significantly over the past 20 years. They can be broadly classified under the headings of physical, chemical, and elemental. In this paper reference is made to a number of such variables, and comment is made on the state of the art in their measurement. Although not confined to development in Australia, particular reference is made to the considerable Australian contribution in this area of Technology.

Standard microeconomic theory suggests that the behaviour of mineral extraction and processing firms with respect to their demand for water can be modelled and a market demand for water subsequently derived. Such a model, although an abstraction of the real world, should be able to predict the responsiveness of quantity of water demanded to change in price, and, change in demand to a range of factors including: expectations about reliability of supply, changed commodity prices for mineral production, and change in water technology and storage at mine site. This paper demonstrates that the price of water is particularly responsive to changes in demand and that although price increases would result in some additional supplies, physical constraints on supply suggest that the industry will be paying considerably higher prices for water in the future. It is recommended that the mining industry undertakes quantification of possible price increases to position itself to minimise the impact on their operating costs as well as to make responsible capital investment decisions to facilitate future expansion or commissioning of new mines. Substantial investment is required to commission a new mining venture with expected rates of return subject to risk and uncertainty due to fluctuations in world commodity markets as well as reliability of secure supplies of inputs. If a reliable supply of water was subject to uncertainty and water was a critical input for production, then the initial mine design would typically consider a range of production decisions contingent on levels of uncertainty with respect to water supply. These states or sets of water supply, will affect production decisions and future water demand. Modelling production decisions contingent on different states of nature, termed the state-contingent approach, provides a number of insights about producer behaviour under uncertainty. This paper investigates the assumptions underlying the derivation of the market demand for water by the mineral resource industry and identifies the drivers of demand and the responsiveness of the industry to change in price and supply, particularly in relation to capital investment in water-use technologies. The usefulness of these models to the mining industry is considered by reference to the increasing demand for water by the industry in Queensland, in a climate of water shortages.

The Mesozoic intrusive rocks in southeastern coastal China can be divided into three intrusive suites, and they can be brought into corresponding with four cycles of volcanic activity. This paper describes their time-space relation with volcanic rocks, and their geochemical characteristics. Data from the Mesozoic volcanic-intrusive. complex rocks in Eastern Zheijiang, Eastern Fujiang and Eastern Guangdong show distinct regional differences, both within and tectonomagmatic activity regions. The southeastern coast of China involves four tectonomagmatic activity regions. They have many differences on the nature of magma source regions, activity patterns of magma, time-space distribution, petrography and petrographic facies association of volcanic and intrusive rock and mineralization.

Magnetic field studies provide remote sensing of magnetisation distributions and a means to investigate moderately- to strongly-magnetised ore deposits that may be partially or totally buried. However, above-surface magnetic field surveys have limited capability to resolve the detail of magnetisation distributions because of the large separation between the magnetisation and the magnetic sensor. While some of this detail is available from magnetic susceptibility logging within boreholes or from magnetisation studies on recovered core, these measurements are limited to the exact trace of the boreholes. The large disconnect between ground or aeromagnetic surveys and highly-localised borehole sampling can cause problems in developing robust source models from magnetic survey data. The measurement of magnetic field in boreholes has the capacity to at least partially bridge that gap by measuring the magnetic field due to magnetisations proximal to, but not intersected by, the boreholes.CSIRO has developed the world’s first downhole magnetic tensor gradiometer. This instrument measures magnetic field gradients in all directions within a borehole. A prototype instrument has been built and tested as part of phase 1 of the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (DET CRC). The prototype performed well with magnetic pyrrhotite at the DET CRC test site in the Adelaide Hills and at Carpentaria’s Hawsons magnetite deposit south of Broken Hill. Further work is required to reduce the diameter of the probe so that it can operate in NQ holes (it is currently limited to HQ or wider) and to transform it to a continuous logging tool. The borehole tensor gradiometer can be used to investigate the continuity of magnetisation over a distance of several metres to tens of metres away from a borehole intersection and the structural dip of the magnetic body. It can be used to either replace or augment downhole magnetic susceptibility logging. Experience with tyre wear on Wabco 85C rear dump trucks is then outlined, concen- trating on wheel camber, wheel alignment, truck speed, tyre pressure, loading and haul road design. T T.1TUnilhTPTTnAT The Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty. Limited mines and beneficiates sedimentary manganese ores from a series of orebodies occurring in the western part of the island. The island is one of a group on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 50 kilometres from the Arnhem Land coast and about 650 kilometres from Darwin. Whilst capacity of the mine is presently 2.3 mil- lion tonnes of product per annum, current production has been reduced to just more than half this figure, due to a general mar- ket recession.

The Pleistocene basanite-tephrite Rothenberg cone complex was built by an alter- nation of strombolian and phreatomagmatic phases of explosive eruption. Two main centres, on a one km long NNE-trending fissure, were active during its construction. The strombolian deposits from three discrete facies corresponding to the crater-fill and inner wall and outer wall environments on the cone. The outer wall facies consists of an alternation of 1. 'normal' coarse-grained, relatively well- sorted lapilli and bomb beds, and 2. finer-grained poorly-sorted lapilli beds. Evidence suggests that the former was pro- duced by open-vent lava fountaining, with balanced magma supply and discharge rates, and the latter are the products of eruptions during partial blockage of the vent, by collapse of wall-rock, and formation of a degassed crust on the magma. The resulting explosions there- fore ejected a mixture of fresh actively ves- iculating magma, older partially degassed lava and material recycled from the wall of the cones. The phreatomagmatic deposits are an alternation of moderately-sorted fall beds and thinner ash-rich pyroclastic surge and rain-flushed units. The clast populations are much more diverse than strombolian ones, including abundant wall rock fragments from 0-100 m depth. The juvenile (magmatic) particles range from highly vesicular scoria to dense 'bread-crusted' clasts, and contain abundant small wall rock inclusions. The phreatomagmatic phases are products of explosive interaction of small batches of magma with shallow groundwater. Vesiculation of this magma played a small but significant role throughout the fragmentation.
