The Earth's Upper Mantle is dominantly peridotitic but in convergent margin regions, such as the S.W. Pacific, subduction of oceanic crust gives greater chemical and petrological diversity to upper mantle petrology and petrogenesis. Examination of currently active, Quaternary and Tertiary volcanism in the S.W. Pacific, particularly seeking information from ocean floor sampling to characterize the basement to island arcs and to investigate active spreading centres, consistently points to parental magmas of basaltic to picritic character. However, these parental magmas are chemically diverse and it is not possible to designate a characteristic 'island arc' or 'convergent margin' petrogenesis in the sense of a characteristic mantle source composition and a charactistic partial melting regime. In this respect, magma genesis at convergent margins contrasts with that at oceanic spreading centres. This paper will discuss specifically the performances of vibrating screens having circular motion with inclined decks and linear motion with horizontal or near horizontal decks and both related mainly to coal, metalliferous, and other granulated solids applications where screening and efficient classification is required. The effect of stresses and acoustic emissions on the gas permeability of coal was investigated in the field and the laboratory in order to find an estimative method of the practicability of gas drainage. In the field, acoustic emissions and gas emissions during gas drainage drilling were monitored tentatively at some coal mines in Japan and China.In the laboratory, acoustic emissions from coal specimens in addition to gas permeability were measured during the triaxial compression loading in order to interpret the results monitored in the field. Besides, the opening of gas permeation channels in coal was considered on the basis of the experimental results.

Sub-level caving with bottom ore drawing has gained wide acceptance in rich, soft, low magnetic iron ores because it provides moderate ore dilution and ore losses. The main problem here is the high rock pressure exerted on sub-level drives situated in the sub-level sill pillars. To reduce this effect, the ore block is divided into panels. This paper illustraes the method of determining the maximum panel width providing low maintenance cost of sub-level drives.

A testwork program aimed to improve the assaying of underground face samples established that for an Accelerated Cyanidation Extraction using the LeachWELLTM 60X catalyst, followed by an Aqua Regia finish (to quantify non-cyanide-extractable gold): ò Assay results (including the aqua regia finish) from a full set of samples from one underground face can be returned within four hours. ò The reagent dose to make the method simple and 'bullet-proof' is 8 gm LeachWELLTM 60X and 20 gm NaCN per 200 gm sample (30 per cent solids). Pulverising is to 90 per cent passing 75 micron (compared to the standard of 90 per cent passing 150 micron), and cyanidation is completed within one hour - however both might be further optimised. ò The LeachWELLTM/Aqua Regia results demonstrate that Fire Assays suffer from a significant nugget effect which makes the Fire Assay data relatively unreliable. ò Original costs, specific to Bannockburn (viz including an Aqua Regia finish), handling approximately 20 000 to 25 000 per annum is estimated to be $5.40, ie about one-third less than fire assaying. Optimising is further reducing these costs. It is estimated that the LeachWELLT"'/Aqua Regia assay procedure has reduced the probable error limits of any given assay of this ore from the range 0.74x to 1.36x for Fire Assay, to an appreciably smaller range of 0.90x to 1.11x. Thus for a cut-off grade of 1.60 g Au/t, samples with Fire Assays ranging up to 2.18 g Au/t have 25 per cent chance of being below cut-off, while samples with Fire Assays as low as 1.18 g Au/t have an equal chance of actually exceeding cut-off grade. This 1 g Au/t range in uncertainty is generally unacceptable for many practicalgrade/tonnage relationships. By contrast, using LeachWELLTM + Aqua Regia assays, the estimated corresponding limits are 1.44 g Au/t and 1.78 g Auk respectively - a far more tolerable 0.34 g Au/t range of uncertainty. Subsequent data has demonstrated that sufficient accuracy for grade control is achieved by Accelerated Cyanidation alone, further halving the cost of assays.

The DOZ underground mine at PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper and gold mine in Indonesia with current ore production of 42 000 tpd. Because of the mine expansion into the West DOZ more ventilation raises are needed to create a safe and healthy work place. All ventilation raises that connect the extraction levels to the underlying gallery exhaust drifts at DOZ are now developed using drop raise techniques. This paper describes the improvements undertaken to increase blasting efficiency, to decrease cost and reduce safety risks. This was achieved by using deck loading and presplitting, changing of stemming materials and prevention of excessive raise collar cratering (blow up).

Grade control plays an essential role in the good running of a mine. The factors at play are many, starting from a good analysis of the geology and a correct sampling procedure. Once this is achieved (and it is an essential prerequisite), the problem is to adequately define what is ore and what is waste. This paper tries to show, through a small example, how simple geostatistical techniques (variography, and moving average or kriging), can help in accurately defining these limits in a geologically homogeneous zone, thus allowing optimal use of the available information.

Understanding the fundamental principles governing the reactions at surfaces has always been the goal of theoretical surface science. The atomistic simulation techniques have been used to calculate the surface structures and the stability of quartz and wollastonite, and their adsorption behaviour in the presence of molecular and dissociative water, and the two widely used collector head group molecules of methanoic acid and methylamine. The dissolution behaviour of wollastonite has also been modelled. The calculated surface energy, hydration energy and reaction energy values have been examined and discussed in the light of flotation literature. These studies have given an insight into the interactions at atomic level, which indicate that modelling techniques should be capable of predicting the adsorption behaviour and to design the selective collector molecules, which is of central importance to the mineral processing technique of flotation.

The patterns of flow of reaction gases through the flash furnace at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter were simulated in a 1:20 scale model using a flow of water. Particular features of the flow down the reaction shaft, through the settling chamber and into the uptake leading to the waste-heat boiler were examined. Inferences were made concerning the effects of the patterns of flow on the efficiency of the smelting reaction, on the entrainment of dust by the gas stream and on the erosion of the refractory lining of the furnace. In addition, the effects of geometrical modifications to the arrangement of the concentrate burners and to the profile of the settling chamber were explored by making these changes to the model and observing the resulting variations in the patterns of flow.

The Dampier Port Upgrade was completed in 2007 and is the largest project in Rio Tinto Iron Ore's expansion program. The project doubled Dampier Port's iron ore shipping capacity over a five year period. Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) was appointed by Rio Tinto as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) contractor to manage Phase A and Phase B of the Dampier Port Upgrade. The aim of the project was to increase the Dampier Port capacity from 74 to 140 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). This increase in shipping capacity tripled the capacity of the Parker Point facility from 34 to 94 Mt/a, whilst the East Intercourse Island facility increased from 40 to 46 Mt/a. The Dampier port remained fully operational throughout construction and achieved record yearly export tonnages over the period of the project. The $US1.4B project was completed ahead of schedule, on budget and with an outstanding safety record. Significantly the project team set an industry benchmark by achieving five million man-hours Lost Time Injury (LTI) free. The project has been recognised by the Engineers Australia 2008 Western Australian Engineering Excellence awards as category winner in resources and the overall winner in WA, and went on to win a National Engineering Excellence award. This paper provides an overview of the EPCM project management and an insight into some of the key drivers that have delivered this outstanding project.

The manufacture of steel from raw materials which have to be mined, transported and processed must affect the environment. Steelmaking, like almost every other stage of manufacture involves the unwanted production of dust and fume; thus a major part of the steel industry's effort to minimize changes to the environment is the collection, treatment and recycling of dust and fume to avoid pollution of the atmosphere and waterways. The paper describes how this achieved in the various steelmaking processes and shows the diversity of problems-and their solutions in this context. Particular emphasis is, given to basic oxygen steelmaking.

Rio Tinto Technology and the Rio Tinto Foundation for a Sustainable Minerals Industry have funded the development of a practical floating module that can reduce water losses through evaporation from water dams at mining and mineral processing facilities by about 75 per cent. The modules, which are also suitable for use by farmers and communities, were designed for easy deployment, to allow the water to æbreatheÆ, harvest rainfall and resist wind speeds of more than 100 km/h. A large-scale demonstration trial will be conducted at the Northparkes Mine, located near Parkes (New South Wales, Australia). The objective of the trial is to demonstrate to Rio Tinto business units, community, farming and government groups the moduleÆs operating costs and water saving potential.

The Hartley layered mafic igneous complex within the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe contains economically-recoverable quantities of platinum group metals and gold, nickel, copper and cobalt. The recoverable metals are concentrated in a thin gently-dipping stratigraphic unit - the Main Sulphide Zone. The Hartley Platinum mine, jointly owned by BHP and Delta Gold NL, is scheduled to come on stream at the end of 1996 at an initial mining rate of 2.16 million tonnes per annum and will produce approximately 150 000 oz of platinum and 3300 tonnes per annum of nickel, as well as saleable amounts of palladium (110 000 oz), rhodium (11 500 oz) and copper (2232 tonnes).

"In some underground mines it has been observed that the primary focus during feasibility studies is to determine the best way to mine the defined orebody. Some studies have been conducted without sufficient consideration of the ventilation and cooling requirements or the risk from exposure to associated airborne pollutants caused by the mining operations.Following the hierarchy of control to manage risk, numerous problems of the ventilation systems in some underground mines could have been avoided if sufficient consideration was given to the ventilation requirements to manage heat, airborne pollutants and leakage during the feasibility study phase. If the constraints and hazards were well defined and understood at the time of the study, efforts could have been made to eliminate or substitute the hazards to decrease the risk. Some of these problems include but are not limited to: primary fan locations heat loads diesel exhaust ventilation design based on the production requirement fire/emergency response strategies.This paper highlights areas in the ventilation discipline that are sometimes overlooked during feasibility studies. It will also highlight the importance of the Ventilation Specialist during these studies. Experience and knowledge of best ventilation practices must be applied in feasibility studies.As a result of adequate consideration to all ventilation aspects in the feasibility study phase, risks will become lower in terms of health, safety, production loss and equipment downtime caused by heat.CITATION:Kok, J, 2014. The long continuing controversy over the Origin of fusain, whether it is a product of primeval forest fires, or of special conditions of weathering (including bacterial decay) of the vegetal debris concerned prior to, burial, has now been extended, to include the possibility that fusain is a product of the coalifaction process subsequent to deposition, so that doubt may reach even to its time of formation.The conflicting views on this point are summarised in the following quotations from two recent publications (my italics in each quotation):1. "Recent observations made in peat and brown coal deposits in Australia, England and Germany strongly suggest that practically all fusain is formed by coalifaction after deposition and 'preliminary compression. In deposits of advanced brown coal rank, it normally takes the shape of pieces of wood compressed parallel to the bedding plane; and some fragments consisting partly of fusain and partly of vitrain exhibit the same amount of compression throughout. This would seem to indicate fusinisation after burial, as hard brittle charcoal would be crushed, or else retain its original irregular shape if strong enough to withstand pressure.In some immature deposits, however, where cover is of a hydrostatic nature rather than a vertical compressionar force, occasional pieces of fusinised wood showing very little flattening are present, but such immature deposits seldom contain the proportion of fusain found in higher rank coals. In view of this, and the possibility of introduction of charcoal into peat deposits, it is felt that a small amount of the fusain in coal may represent wood charred before burial, but most of it almost certaInly originated as a product of fusinisation after burial" (Dulhunty, 1948, p.14).

The present paper gives the design of a new HGMS for magnetic separation of sulphides. The main characteristics of this HGMS are using iron-cladding saddle-shaped magnetic coil for instead of the ordinary magnet, and combining reciprocal-linear motion with vibration to actuate the separation box, and the magnetic field intensity is high up to 2T as well. For improving the magnet system design, a modified finite element method is used to calculate the distribution of magnetic field intensity of separation space of the magnetic coil, and accordingly the calculation results the magnetic leakage coefficient can be determined easily, thus designers apart from the empirical way.
