The promotion of good standards of reporting of the valuation of mineral assets in- public documents has been of concern to professional mining industry bodies, the securities industry, and. Government regulatory bodies for some time. This concern led to the National Companies and Securities Commission Release 149 (1990b) which laid down standards for Expert Reports on mining and petroleum securities, and other assets. The formation of the Australian Securities Commission provided an opportunity for a timely revision of Release 149 and the Mineral Valuation Committee was established by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1991 to review the existing code, and to develop an appropriate new Code and Guidelines.

The mining and resources industry in general has relied on macro separation technologies (greater than 1 micron) through processes which include: ò sedimentation ò flocculation and coagulation screening and filtration ò absorption ò magnetic separation ò chemical leaching and precipitation Essentially, these processes and technologies provide the industry with an effective arsenal to handle most separation requirements to date. Dewatering of solutions is one of the most significant requirements of the resources industry, as practically all mining endeavours use water in their process for leaching, extraction, cooling, dilution or for potable drinking water.

According to our experimental results, the following oxygen probe recommended, that is, the magnesia stabilized zirconia was employed as a solid electrolyte and Fe.FexO solid elect- rode was used as a reference electrode. Using such an oxygen probe, we tried to measure the oxygen potentials in molten metals, mattes and gases in the following fields of non-ferrous metal industry, molten copper in the side launder before casting, molten crude lead in the forehearth of ISP blast furnace, molten copper mattes in the forehearth of blast furnace and in the settler of flash smelting furnace, gas in the settler of copper flash smelting furnace and flue gas in the electric furnace for ferro-silicon. In the past ten years or so, many experi- mental results in the field of fundamental studies have confirmed that the equilibrium oxygen potential could be measured conveniently and accurately by an electrochemical method using a zirconia solid electrolyte. Recently, such an electrochemical technique has been also applied to a device for physicochemical invest- igation or process control in the non-ferrous metal industry. Such a device consists of an oxygen con- centration cell with stabilized zirconia, and it is commonly called an "oxygen probe" or "oxygen sensor".

Widespread interest in reopening Victorian gold mines, regenerated by increased gold prices, has highlighted the technical problems prevailing. A combination of historical lease legislation, minimal recent mining activity, forms of mineralisation, high insurance rates and tortuous approval requirements for mining mean the potential investor assessing an old mine must address a wide range of technical problems. The requirements for establishment of ore reserves and attraction of capital for mine development are fundamental. Underground reef mining was historically generally on a small scale, and as mining on many fields ceased about the turn of the century, past geological and production records cannot be correlated to personal experience and comment. The impact of modern mining technology on future reef mining will be to reduce operating costs and significantly improve historic metallurgical recovery. Roth these are commensurate with increased capital costs. Workers compensation rates currently applicable in Victoria are many times higher than in other states, adding significantly to operating costs. Establishment of a pilot plant testing facility in central Victoria would provide an invaluable service in treating bulk samples essential for grade and recovery assessments of Victorian ores.

Ordovician metasedimenIs near the Karamea Bend and east of Ihe upper Carboniferous Karamea batholith were intruded by acidic stocks during the Cretaeeous. K/ Ar dating of two of the stocks gave 110 ± 3 millionyears whereas the batholith granite gave 290 8 ± million years. All but one of the stocks mapped lie on an approximately ENE line along which they show gradation in composition, texture, and alteration.Most of the intrusions have produced homfelsic haloes in the surrounding rocks but the hydrothermal alteration centred near the head of Questa Creek is quite distinct. Here much wider zones of alteration are characterised by chlorite, green biotite, sericite, and quartz-orthoclase in order towards the centre, though no stock crops out. Each zone of stronger alteration is heralded by "spots" containing the next characteristic mineral.It is suggested that a late phase of the intrusive period that gave rise to the outcropping stocks also gave rise to a volatile-rich intrusion still hidden beneath the head of Questa Creek.

Kamhalda is located within the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, specifically in the Norseman - Wiluna greenstone belt. Numerous nickel sulphide deposits have been mined at Kambalda with I I mines currently operating. For several years, a program of in-mine geophysics has been operating at Kambalda, with downhole electromagnetics (UHEM) one of the key techniques used. Three case studies illustrating the uses of UHEM in mines are presented here. In the first example, the Helmut South deposit was discovered as the result of an extensional exploration program. The first drill hole in the program intersected ore width and grade mineralisation at around 760 in depth. Two subsequent holes intersected subgrade mineralisation. DHEM surveys were completed in each of these three holes, with anomalies recorded indicating that a large conductor was located directly south of the first hole. The next hole intersected this target, for an intersection of 21.6 in at 3.5 per cent Ni. DHEM continued to play a role as the exploration program proceeded, providing drill hole targeting based on anomalous responses recorded in each drill hole. In the second example from Carnilya Hill, old drill holes were surveyed with DHEM in order to search a large section of prospective contact for massive ore pods. An off-hole anomaly was detected and subsequent mining discovered a small but high-grade pod of ore which was extracted for a considerable profit. Carnilya Hill has limited reserves and discoveries such as this, assist in keeping the mine operating. In the third example from Victor, a program of drilling intersected thin ore profiles in an interpreted flanking position. Without massive ore close by, these intersections probably do not constitute economic mineralisation. DHEM surveys of three holes did not detect any conductors. The area is now regarded as sterilised of significant massive ore and exploration efforts and dollars can be focused in other areas. These three examples demonstrate the type of successes that can he achieved through the use of DHEM.

The use of shotcrete as an efficient means of both temporary and permanent ground support has continued to grow over the last 30 years, with its use underground now commonplace around the world. However, the development of analytical design methods has lagged advances in material and application technologies. Historically, part of the reason for this was a lack of understanding of how shotcrete linings actually worked. Considerable progress has been made in this area in recent years and this paper attempts to summarise the current state of practice with respect to shotcrete lining design. It then concludes by summarising areas where the authors consider future research and development is still required.

There has been an unprecedented rise in the fatality rate in the Australian mining industry over the last few years. The factors behind this rise are not clear; however, it is noted that the increase in fatalities has occurred during a fall in commodity prices.This paper examines prevention methods and systems to deal with hazards that have the potential to result in either single or multiple fatalities. The Hazelwood Mine (HM) commenced operations in the 1950s and was originally operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) prior to it becoming privatised. ENGIE, the current owners of the Hazelwood Mine ceased operations in 2017 and have since transitioned the site into the rehabilitation and closure phase, which is to encompass a full pit lake as part of the final landform. A key aspect of HM closure is the maintenance of long-term stability of the pit slopes to deliver a final landform which is safe and sustainable, particularly given its proximity to critical public receptors. The Princes Freeway, which is the primary access route to the Latrobe Valley (LV), and the Morwell Township are both located immediately to the north of the HM. Heap leaching is establishing itself as an efficient method for the extraction of gold from low grade ore. It has the advantage of low capital costs, low operating costs and rapid startup. However, not all ores are amenable to heap leaching. It is only applicable to well oxidized ores that have reasonable permeability characteristics. Ore with excess fines or clay often display low permeability and are unsuitable for heap leaching.In this study, an attempt has been made to increase the rate of cyanide leach solution percolation by flocculating clay particles or reducing the surface tension of the leach solution. A wetting agent was found to decrease the rate of gold dissolution, possibly by presenting a hydrophobic surface to the gold particle. Flocculation of the clay increased the solution flow rate. The flocculation agent had no affect on the total gold leached but decreased the leaching rate.

After multiple tailings dam failures in recent times, the owner organisations have made increased efforts to step up the governance systems to industry best practise in the design, construction and operational management areas. The measures include but are not limited to, site investigation, rigorous peer review (both internal and external), certification through appropriately qualified personnel and improvement in operational management practises. While a lot of focus is on design and operational practices, the construction stage requires adaptation (both in terms of materials and approved design) and immediate decision making on site. Work undertaken in these areas is mostly irreversible and sometimes poses serious threat to the future TSF raise/ expansion planning and may lead to reduced life of the TSF and additional risk to the Owner.This technical paper will discuss some challenges and highlight the importance of appropriate processes to achieve a successful construction regime. The techniques used by the State Electricity Commis- sion of Victoria to handle and store brown coal in the both the raw coal and boiler bunkers are outlined. These tech- niques were adopted in agreement with the science of modern bulk solids handling. By successful balance between practical requirements and bulk solid handling system design require- ments the Commission expects to confidently attain reliable coal flow even for the most adverse of coal flow properties. Attainment of this goal demanded full attention to channel detail selection. An outcome of this attention has been the development of a novel bunker and discharge arrangement for handling extremely difficult to handle coals. Due to the novel features of this slot bunker outlet arrangement it's ad- vantages and disadvantages are discussed.

Recent operating experience from West Australian open pit gold mines has shown that geotechnical input into initial design is rare. As a result, ground stability is poor - almost half the pits designed in this way suffer major failure.West Australian experience shows that geotechnical studies for individual mines are site specific, and therefore empirical experience cannot be transported from site to site. Geotechnical studies performed prior to design have resulted in significantly improved pit stability.

The anodic dissolution of iron from three different Western Australian reduced ilmenites was investigated using the carbon paste electrode technique. A characteristic current-potential diagram, called a cyclic voltammogram (CV), was obtained for each of the reduced ilmenites. The shape of the CV measured for all three reduced ilmenites was strongly time dependent. The effect of electrolyte composition and temperature on the CV of one reduced ilmenite was also investigated. The results suggest that the initial surface of iron in reduced ilmenite is slow to dissolve and that chloride ions and higher temperatures accelerate the dissolution of this initial surface layer. However, after removal of this layer, the dissolution rate was essentially independent of the electrolyte composition and the temperature.

Bauxite residue is one of the most important by-products from the alumina industry with no commercial use till now. The utilisation of bauxite residue through pelletising with different lime additions, hydrogen reduction, and smelting has been studied in this work. Three different types of green pellets were made with varying calcite-to-bauxite residue ratio and subsequently sintered at elevated temperatures. The sintered pellets were isothermally reduced at 1000°C under hydrogen gas followed by smelting of the reduced pellets in argon at 1500°C. Smelting of the reduced pellets leads to the recovery of metallic iron and the formation of a leachable calcium aluminate slag. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterise the phases and microstructural analysis. The iron produced in the smelting process has a high purity, above 99.5 wt per cent. While the iron content of the slags is quite low, and the slags shows variations of krotite (CaAl2O4), gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7), and perovskite (CaTiO3) phases based on the variation of calcite addition. It was found that the more calcite addition in pelletising yields higher percentage of krotite phase as compared to lower calcite-containing pellets. Employing quantitative XRD analysis, the krotite phase fraction was found approximately 85 wt per cent for higher calcite-added pellet, and around 74 wt per cent for lower calcite-added pellet. Constructed between 1885 and 1891, the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) in New York State is a 50 km long (31 mi) brick-lined tunnel conveying water from the Croton watershed north of New York City to distribution systems in the Bronx and Manhattan. Except at two siphons, the aqueduct operates as an open channel conduit from the New Croton Reservoir downstream 39 km (25 mi) to the Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bronx. The remaining 11 km (6 mi) is operated as a pressurised conduit and includes a major siphon, of circular cross-section, under the Harlem River. The aqueduct has a flow capacity of approximately 1100 million litres of water per day (13 m3/s or 290 million gallons per day) and supplies on average ten per cent of New York CityÆs drinking water. The CityÆs water supply system is operated and maintained by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). This paper covers the work done during the three main stages of the program to rehabilitate the entire NCA: inspections, design and rehabilitation. It also includes some of the more interesting structural findings of the original construction as well as documents and drawings from the NYCDEP archives. The rehabilitation program has been underway in phases since 1993, with inspections scheduled to minimise outages, allowing this strategic aqueduct to remain in service during critical seasonal periods. The open channel flow section of the aqueduct in the north is horseshoe shaped, with inside dimensions of 4.1 m (13.6 ft) in width and 4 m (13.5 ft) in height. The pressurised section is 3.7 m (12.3 ft) in diameter, and includes a 90 m (330 ft) deep siphon under the Harlem River. A total of 163 million bricks were used in the construction, enough to build a 48 km (30 mi) wall around Manhattan Island, 3 m (10 ft) thick and 15 m (50 ft) high.Between 1993 and 1997 a series of in-tunnel investigations were performed in the open channel portion of the NCA, consisting of field inspection, non-destructive geophysical testing, and coring of the brick liner. Between November 2004 and September 2005, a major inspection program was conducted to assess the condition of the 11 km (6 mi) long pressurised section and all shafts, headhouses and blow-off structures along the entire 50 km (31 mi) alignment. Inspection methods included using an underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with sonar and cameras to inspect the deep siphon, fibre optics examinations of probe holes drilled through and beyond the brick lining, and core holes and geophysical inspections to assess properties of the liner and behind-the-liner materials. A water pressure and test grouting program was conducted to assess methods and expected grout takes for the rehabilitation work in the pressurised sections. The rehabilitation program is anticipated to be completed in 2010.

Structural fatigue damage of haul truck frames is a costly problem associated with the operation of large mine haul trucks. A monitoring programme is described which has been instigated to measure stresses in the frames of haul trucks under actual mine operating conditions. The instrumentation used and methodology employed in the computer analysis of the results is briefly described. The results of the monitoring programmes are reviewed, and the effects of various factors affecting structural fatigue damage of three common types of rear dump truck are considered. Factors discussed include the effects of haul route features (for example shovel, dump and crusher areas); the effect of operations such as turning, braking, loading and dumping; the influence of payload; the effects of malfunctions in suspensions; and the influence of haul route surface quality. It is shown that with respect to payload, while structural fatigue damage is increased with payload, the structural damage per unit of payload does not change significantly for moderate increases in payload above the nominal value. Finally, on the basis of these results, recommendations are made for haul route design and operational practices which will increase the structural fatigue life of haul truck frames.

Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government's role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. Exploration is classic scientific research, at least through to the proving Stages.

Mineralisation adjacent to Herberton occurs within three main subcentres. The Her- berton Hill subcentre is characterised by the association of Sn,W the Herberton Dividing Range South subcentre by Sn, and the Herberton Dividing Range North by Cu, As. The relation- ships between the subcentres are discussed in terms of metal distribution, production, deposit types, wall rock alteration and re- lationships with granitoid intrusives. The temporal and three dimensional spatial re- lationships between the centres are uncertain.

Over the past 15 years many world-class gold discoveries have been made in the region. Some deposits, such as Lihir and Porgera in P.N.G., have a contained gold resource that places them among the top dozen deposits ever found on a worldwide basis. Can we see any pattern to these discoveries, or are they the result of good luck or chance by geologists and prospectors who struck it rich? Whilst such discoveries were a feature of the gold rushes of the 1850s and the 1900s, the present boom is now scientifically based. This paper develops an argument that long-tent, multi-disciplinary exploration by experienced geoscience teams underlie the successes achieved. Dis- coveries nearly always reflect a combination of skills, drawn from the areas of geology, geochemistry, geophysics and remote sensing, and a team approach. They do not represent the chance finds of a prospector's pick or such as the Norseman discovery where the gold reef was first noted by the prospector when his horse fell over the outcrop. The following deposits provide major examples of exploration successes within the Australian-Pacific region, it is not an exhaustive list and I have noted other significant producers at the end of this paper. For the Australian mines listed and based on our estimates for 1990 gold production, they represent about 20 per cent of the Australian production total.
