The ocean floor, often called the last frontier, is increasingly discussed in terms of its resource potential û from near shore building aggregate and placer deposits to massive sulfide orebodies in the deeper ocean. Consequently there is an increasing incentive to mine the seafloor. But, do we have the social license to explore and mine the seafloor? Does this nascent industry have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? And what should be done? To answer some of these questions, the Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship has explored the social viability of an expanded seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) industry inAustralia. The results show that there are significant geological and environmental data gaps and that, in the absence of sufficient information, stakeholder reaction to the prospect of an SEM industry expansion may be reactionary and negative. This uncertainty means that the perception of risk from the industry is variable and often dependent on individual values. The acceptability of an expansion to the SEM industry is currently precarious, in particular due to the high levels of uncertainty regarding the environmental impacts of seafloor activity. While there are existing federal regulatory frameworks and government processes for the licensing of seafloor mineral exploration and extraction, there is little precedent in the application and implementation of these regulations. The future viability of the industry will be highly dependant on AustraliaÆs ability to improve the knowledge-base underpinning its regulatory regime and also to generate open and transparent communication channels between stakeholders. It will also be dependent on the SEM industryÆs ability to communicate an acceptable value proposition to society. This proposition will need to include the relative impacts of terrestrial and marine mining, the alternative potential uses of the ocean and the multi-use conflict that SEM might engender. The general experience in gold cyanidation research activities and plant practice is that high oxygen and cyanide concentrations improve gold leaching kinetics which in turn reduce residence time and increase throughput. This paper shows how the improved pre-oxidation method for the pyrrhotite rich gold ore of Bounty Gold Mine has increased gold recoveries at lower reagent consumption rates. The installation of a pipe reactor, in conjunction with a Multi Mix Systems oxygen injector, has lowered the amount of oxygen required to achieve a dissolved oxygen level target of 20 mg/L. The improvement of the pre-oxidation stage and lead nitrate solution addition has led to a reduction in the free cyanide concentration required for leaching, resulting in a decrease in cyanide consumption rate by 36 per cent to achieve a one to two per cent improvement in the gold recovery.

The Ore Reserve/Exploration System implemented at Mount Isa for M.I.M. Holdings Limited is a comprehensive computer system designed to process assay, geological, structural and survey data input via special purpose logging sheets from daily activities at Isa Mine, Hilton Mine and various Carpentaria Exploration Company prospects. The system performs two basic functions; (1) data acquisition, validation and file maintenance to prepare the data for retrieval, and (2) generation of routine and optional reports. The types of reports available range from masterfile detail printouts and retrieval of data by key items to survey computations, structural analyses, cutoff calculations, statistical analyses and ore reserve calculations by the polygonal, inverse square or moving average techniques. The use of various optional reports available through the system is illustrated by several examples, and planned future development is discussed.

A study of the passive treatment system for Hilton minewater revealed that it consists of four main process steps. The water, which contains soluble and particulate iron and zinc and is supersaturated with CO , is pumped to the surface and then passes throuqh a degassinq unit into settling ponds where larger particles of iron hydroxide, containing some adsorbed zinc, can settle out. The still turbid supernatant is pumped to the top of a hill, from where it is allowed to trickle in a broad sheet, releasing CO , towards an earthen channel in the valley below. Consequently the pArises from around 6 to 7.5. This in turn promotes further decrease in the concentration of soluble zinc by increased adsorption of zinc on to iron hydroxide particles. The channel then transports the water to the third process in the system - a 53 ML pond acting primarily as a flocculation-sedimentation basin. The clarified water overflows into a second channel, downstream of the pond, which constitutes the fourth process in the system. Here, copious quantities of filamentous algae further reduce zinc concentrations to acceptable levels before the water is collected for recycle into mine operations. The work reported here represents a detailed study of this system and describes the optimisation of the operation of each of the individual steps involved.

This paper refers to a new idea of stereometry of cutting drums of longwall shearers designed to get medium and hard to mine coals. A new way to place picks on a drum enables to readjust a number of picks being in contact with the body of coal to shearer haulage speed. Owing to this a remarkable increase in depth of a cut within the low range of haulage speed has been obtained. On comparing operating characteristics a considerable reduction in the specific energy consumption has been shown when using the units machined as per the new idea, in comparison with the units produced in series.

The Enterprise Mine Project (EMP) is being developed by Mount IsaMines Limited as the future source of copper ore at the Mt Isa miningand processing complex. Environmental engineering is one of the majortechnical challenges facing the project because of the depth of theorebodies, high virgin rock temperatures and hot ambient surfacetemperatures in summer. This paper discusses the engineering principles adopted by EMP to manage the risks associated with working in these adverse thermal conditions.

Kobe is divided by the Rokko Mountains, runn- ing from east to west. The southern section of Kobe is highly developed in contrast with the northern section, but big, new residential pro- jects like the Hokusetsu New Town and Hokushin New Town are steadily being developed. To handle future traffic between the two sections of the city, the double-tracked Hokushin Line, now under construction, will connect the Shin Kobe Station of the Kobe Municipal Transit (Kobe's subway system) to the Tanigami Station of the Kobe Electric Railway. The locations of Kobe city and Hokushin Line are shown in Fig.-1 and Fig.-2 respectively.

Blue amphibole-bearing rocks in the North D'aguilar Block of southeast Queensland occur either as relict pods and lenses within regionally extensive greenschist facies phyllites and schists or as blocks entrained in serpentinite-matrix melange. Epidote + crossite-bearing varieties predominate and formed under conditions consistent with underplating and high P:T metamorphism in a subduction-related tectonic environment. Neither lawsonite nor jadeite has been observed and metamorphic conditions are estimated at 380-4500C for pressures of 0.5-0.8 GPa. High P:T metamorphism occurred during the earliest stages of deformation and was superimposed upon protoliths of inferred Late Devonian - Early Carboniferous age, including mafic volcanics, tuffs and coarse volcaniclastic breccias as well as pelagic and henipelagic sediments, all of which have undergone varying degrees of over-printing to the greenschist facies. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred during the second phase of deformation and was associated with the formation of mainly flat-lying or subhorizontal structures; it followed the cessation of subduction and occurred in response to either thermal relaxation during uplift or the imposition of regional heating induced by crustal thickening and/or synkinanatic granite emplacement. Uplift and cooling of the high P:T rocks was completed by 260-265 Ma and may have occurred in response to the same extensional processes which gave rise to the onset of rifting in the adjacent Esk Trough.

This paper overviews the recent research progress in predicting cutting performance using fracture mechanics principles. It is emphasised that rock fragmentation due to cutting is mainly a process of chip formation resulting from crack initiation and propagation or crack interaction for multi-tool cutting. This process can be simulated by using the well developed fracture mechanics criteria coupled to numerical methods. Fracture toughness is shown to be an important and useful parameter in quantifying cutting performance and in designing cutting tools. The paper concludes with discussions on the dynamic effects involved in rock cutting processes which should be taken into account for optimum cutting efficiency and tool design.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.On 8 February 2016, a major ground movement occurred in the K-Link orebody of the Kencana underground mine, effectively blocking the only two access ways to the stoping area. Following mine clearance, it was found that a Solo production drill rig operator, who had been drilling in the Level 10 Extraction Drive was still underground, cut off from the rest of the mine by the ground movement.Communication, nutritional and logistic supply to the trapped operator was established with the breakthrough of two diamond drill holes. A range of technical expertise and opinions from both on and off-site were sought and two options were chosen for implementation of the rescue operation. The rescue was completed successfully on 16 February 2016 with the operator being rescued in good physical and mental health.CITATION:Kosmara, K, Hilli, A and Steyn, J, 2017. The grades of alluvial ore deposits are low compared with grades of hard rock mining. This factor, combined with other parameters of irregular distribution of particles, bedrock irregularities, size of particles, nugget effect, ore characteristics, and wet horizons, combine to place alluvial deposits among the most difficult to evaluate, and on which to establish an ore reserve with a high degree of confidence. With increased geological input, correct selection and implementation of sampling method, due regard to sample representativity and process design, these confidence levels can be achieved.

Flow maldistribution in the iron blast furnace has been studied analytically by the use of the vectorial form of the Ergun equation and experimentally via packed columns and a cold model of a blast furnace. Experimental results are presented showing the effect on fluid flow patterns of the following types of nonuniformities in a packed bed: the increased voidage at the wall ("wall effect"), the decreased voidage at the interface between layers of materials with different sizes and shapes, and the differences in resistance to flow of bulk regions of a column with different sizes and shapes. The proposed theory is applied to the calculation of fluid flow patterns for these nonuniformities. Velocity profiles, as calculated from these flow patterns, were found to agree reasonably well with experimental measurements obtained via hot wire anemometry techniques for laboratory scale packed columns. Calculated fluid flow patterns are presented for blast furnace burdens which show how flow patterns are affected by (a) coke segregation and (b) the relative differences in resistance to flow between coke and oxide pellet layers. For the cold model study, calculated flow patterns are presented based on photographs of a given burden distribution. The velocity profiles calculated from these flow patterns were found to agree reasonably well with the velocity profiles measured from the cold Model.

Experimentation with new methods, materials and machines to improve primary drilling and blasting is a continuing practice in the hard rock quarry operations of the BMI Group. These experiments will continue in the remote hope that one day we may produce a perfect feed for the primary crusher. As this day is still a long way off, the necessity to break oversize boulders will be a problem to be faced for the foreseeable future. To gauge the efficiency of primary blasting from this point of view, BMI monitor the tonnes of material crushed in the primary crusher for each boulder requiring secondary breaking. Over a period of about 10 years, this figure has improved from 30 tonnes througi the primary crusher per boulder, to 100 tonnes per boulder at our largest operation, which produces in excess of 2 million tonnes per year. Evan with this improvement, 25,000 boulders require secondary breaking each year This paper does not provide the solution to this problem, as like primary blasting, it will have to be constantly reviewed as new products and techniques become available. Mining companies in Australia have grown in size and complexity over the past 20 years. The same period has seen exten- sive changes in the operating environment, with greater competition and intensified in- dustrial and social pressures placing new demands 'on mining activity. The new condi- tions require a management approach that emphasises strategic planning rather than operational efficiency. Strategic management evolves through four distinct phases, namely, financial planning, forecast-based planning, externally oriented planning and 'true' stra- tegic management. The most difficult transi- tion to make is from Phase 2 (forecast-based planning) to Phase 3 (externally oriented plan- ning) since management is often too involved in operations to find time to develop and main- tain a strategic orientation towards the mar- ket and competitors. Reorganisation of re- sponsibility for operations and improved op- erational processes enable management to concentrate on external opportunities.

It is now 32 years since Walsh's classic publication (1) heralded the beginning of atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AA) as we know it today. During this time, AA has developed into the most widely used analytical techniques for the determination of the metallic elements. The years have seen progressive changes in instrumentation so that today it is a highly sophisticated technique. One area of development in AA that is experiencing renewed attention is in the area of electrothermal excitation. In this technique a flame is not used by the analyte solution is atomised by an electrically heated graphite furnace. For a large number of elements the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (GFAA) is considerably more sensitive than flame work. It is common to be able to detect concentrations one hundred times smaller than those possible by flame. Today's geochemists are finding that they can gain valuable information out of very low limits of detection. Electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry (or GFAA) allows for low limits of detection and can be seen to be a valuable aid to geochemical prospecting Analysis.

DURING a period extending over about the last two and a half years, the performances of various types of rock drills in use at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation have been recorded as closely as possible. The main objective was the collection of sufficient data regarding internal water-feed hammer drills, when used for the same class of work as the older type reciprocating drill, to enable a decision to be formed on the following points:(1) Whether internal water-feed, hammer drills could efficiently perform the work previously carried out by reciprocating drills without excessive repair cost to the former.(2) If so, was it good policy commercially to eliminate the reciprocating type completely, writing these off together with the accompanying spares, accessories, and solid drill steel, and replacing with internal water-feed hammer drills, with lighter fittings, and the requisite amount of hollow drill steel.(3) What were the best types and makes of hammer drill for different classes of mining work(4) What was the economic aspect of the introduction of the principle of internal water feed to every type of machine throughout the mine.Prior to the strike of workers in May, 1919, Ingersoll-Rand E47 31-in. reciprocating drills had been used for stoping and for the major portion of driving, cross-cutting, and similar work. The accompanying columns and fittings were all 4t in. The drill steel used was solid octagon. Up to 1916 these machines were also used for winzing, after which time jackhamers were more successfully employed. These latter were of the usual types, varying in weight from 40 to' 46 Ib. Ingersoll BCR 430, Holman No. 2 spool valve, Sullivan DP33,. Waugh Clipper 55. These machines were all dry head; the drill steel was hollow hexagon, shanked.

The Trent-Severn Waterway is a 386 km long navigation route through central Ontario between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay, and is operated by the Parks Canada Agency. Its primary focus is to pass recreational boats through a system of 44 locks. The Big Chute Marine Railway (BCMR) is one site in the system that provides transportation for boats. The BCMR carriage is used to transport boats and their passengers on the inclined railway a distance of 230 m over a natural barrier from one body of water to another, with an elevation difference of 18 m. The unique feature of the haulage system used in this application is the variable angle of the incline from about 20 per cent rise changing to horizontal and followed by 20 per cent decline. In such conditions, unlike as in standard incline haulage, special configuration of hoists and drives is required. On the uphill part of the track, there is a need to have a motoring mode, on the downhill part a regenerating mode and on the horizontal part a combination of motoring and regeneration is required. The original system was built in 1978 and employed four 100 hp dc drive mine hoists to haul the 100 tonne conveyance loaded with 90 tonnes of boats. Due to failures and operational problems with the original system, in 1999 Parks Canada awarded a turnkey contract to ABB for a new, modern system of four single drum hoists. The new system was put into operation in 2000, only six months after receiving the order. The hoists are controlled by digital drives and a digital control system. Due to dramatic changes in the load conditions for individual hoists involved, the new system features many interesting solutions like changing drive modes from speed to torque control and a multiple, regulated braking system. It is a unique hoisting system, which could be also used in mining applications.

The South Wall Base Case Design for Mt Whaleback indicated that along portion of the South Wall a cigar shaped synclinal keel, contain- ing 14 800 m', of Dales Gorge Member ore, would be unkeyed and bed- ding undercut. The dry "ore lobe" slope would be 60m high, unbenched and approximately 170 m long. Stability analyses using specific design parameters established that artificial reinforcement could stabilise the slope and be economically justifiable. To implement the slope design reinforcement for such a complex geo- logical structure it was necessary that all functions pertaining to slope excavation be integrated and co-ordinated within the Mine Geotechnical Section. The objective being to minimise slope damage and thereby optimise the effect of design reinforcement. The successful excavation of the ore lobe in 1988, three years after the introduction of artificial reinforcement, was achieved by strictly main- taining the following parameters. 1. Accurate Geological Model 2. Controlled Perimeter Blasting 3. Controlled Excavation Techniques 4. Quality control -Reinforcement Installation 5. Additional Reinforcement.

Mt Todd lies towards the south end of the Pine Creek Geosyncline, sandwiched between the Cullen Batholith and the Edith Falls Basin, in an area of regionally metamorphosed sandstones, siltstones and shales. The Batman deposit, some 3 km west of Mt Todd is a sheeted quartz vein system hosted within greywackes of the Palaeoproterozoic Burrell Creek Formation (Finniss River Group). The gold-bearing quartz veins, trending 010¦-020¦ and dipping 60¦-70¦E, are commonly 0.5 to 5 cm wide and occur at intervals which are from 10 cm to 1 m apart. Gold tends to be restricted to the quartz veinlets and immediately adjacent country rock. Grade Control utilises two 4 m 'collar' samples which are collected from each 8 m production blasthole. The irregular distribution of the quartz veins and erratic gold mineralisation has resulted in a disseminated 'salt and pepper' type of gold occurrence, with only a poorly defined footwall. Delineation of ore and waste blocks for mining uses an approach which combines the smoothing effect of kriging with a pragmatic view of the raw data. Large ore blocks with simple geometry help to minimise mining dilution, reduce block variance and give good reconciliations to interpreted ore tonnes and grade. Daily mine face advance is reported against truck counts and provides continual comparison with budgeted production. All data processing uses Gemcom software, together with Lotus spreadsheets.
