A new separation method based on a combination of coagulation and colum flotation was used to treat fine sphalerite in the range 90 per cent - 15 pm with a relative high superfical gas velocity and a thick froth layer. Minerals studied include sphalerite, calcite, kaolinite and baryte. A new developed sedimentometer was used for sedimentation analysis to characterise hetercoagulation of mixture and coagulation after addition of active ions or reagents. A comparison between use of selective frother and depressant (SHMP) was made to deactivate activated minerals. Selectivity of frother for sphalerite was found in flotation test. The depression function of Flotanol for activated minerals was confirmed in sedimentation alalysis. The use of small quantities of HPAM can improve the flotation of fine sized sphalerite particle and reduce recovery of activated gangue minerals in the neutral or alkaline pulp. A satisfactory separation of fine sphalerite from its gangue was achieved by using alkylpolyglycolether (Flotanol) and copolymer polyacrylamide (HPAM hydrolysed polyacrylamide) as frothing and flocculating agents Respectively.

"This paper discusses the successful use of bituminous geomembranes (BGMs) in mining applications since their development in 1974. It explains and illustrates the structure of a BGM composite, which is a geomembrane manufactured by impregnating a polyester geotextile with a compound of bitumen, elastomer and filler. Examples of applications of BGMs in the mining industry are also presented in the following contexts.Storage of solid waste: storage of mining waste at mines in Canada heap leach pads in France, Peru, Chile and Turkey at the base of a mining waste landfill in Brazil capping of solid mining waste in Chile and Canada temporary capping of mining stockpiles in Australia (with possible reuse of the BGM for other works).Examples of the application of BGMs for the storage of liquid waste in mining containment reservoirs in Canada, Guatemala and Peru will also be given.For each example given, reasons are supplied that supported the choice of BGMs by the clients and consultants, drawn from the following advantages of the BGM:BGMs have excellent puncture strength, due to the internal polyester reinforcement, as well as excellent ultraviolet resistance. This often eliminates the need for a cushion geotextile or cover soil over the BGM.BGMs have a very long life expectancy, in excess of 300 years, in subsoil conditions (Breul et al, 2004).BGMs can be installed in very harsh climatic conditions. They are suitable for high wind environments as their heavy mass per square metre makes them resistant to wind uplift. The low coefficient of thermal expansion means that BGMs are suitable for installation in mines where very low or very high temperatures are expected. This reduces construction delays and allows for a quicker use of the mining facility.The fact that the BGM can be installed by the mine’s own workforce, after appropriate training from the BGM manufacturer, allows for a more flexible construction sequence on the mine.Ability of the BGM to connect to other materials such as concrete, steel, rock and other geomembranes that may be on the mine site.The technical advantages of a BGM enabled the engineering consultants to prepare solutions for their mining clients that had a lower environmental risk, had a faster completion schedule and were overall a cheaper option than with a polymeric geomembrane.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015. Operations in an underground drill site have to co-exist within the mineÆs ventilation and operational system. The space requirements of a drilling operation have to be adapted to the limitations provided in available site space, which is usually defined by standard mining operations and geotechnical influences. These limitations affect borehole design, equipment positioning in the site layout and possible interactions with mining equipment and services such as water and power supply.The ventilation requirements for drill sites and the means employed vary with depth of the site, space and likely presence of gas. All drilling operations provide a particular service for the mine and in each case, drilling must operate in a manner which controls all gas, water and cuttings returning from the borehole. The various standpiping systems employed have evolved under differing influences and must cater for conditions during and after the drilling operations.The influences that gas content, pressure and flow, rib stability, cleat direction, borehole length, potential water pressure and flow have on a mineÆs operation and ventilation systems have to be considered in the design of standpipe length, diameter and fittings. Past history has a strong influence on common practice while worst case effects of a possible in-hole event should be catered for.This paper describes the early drilling systems and their limitations in ventilation and gas management. The drill site dimensions and set-up are discussed in the context of roadway conditions, equipment layout, ventilation and logistics. The use of standpiping to control all returns from the borehole is illustrated by referring to likely scenarios in a drilling site to achieve the most effective sealed depth to accommodate the worst case possibility of intersecting high pressure gas or water during the drilling operation. The general types of industrial behaviour of liberated valuable sulfide minerals in the 0 - 10 ¦m size fraction are described and tests to explore on site at a concentrator the general nature of any deficient behaviour are discussed. In addition, the general types of behaviour of the gangue minerals in this size fraction are also described in terms of their mechanisms for recovery. These behaviours are also discussed in terms of the type of grinding device and grinding environment in which they were produced and the target grinding product size. Major recent improvements in the industrial capabilities of grinding devices are discussed.Present difficulties in characterisation of particles in the 0 - 10 ¦m range are described and desirable improvements for the future are outlined. Further, desirable improvements for industrial processing of valuable minerals in this size range are discussed along with some remedial actions.

Over the last five years Solid Energy New Zealand (SENZ) has gone through a series of changes in response to both external and internal factors. These changes have included corporate reorganisation and funding restructure, as well as modifications to medium and long term business objectives. The nature and size of its coal reserves and markets requires SENZ to continue developing new mines as existing mines are depleted. As well, there are opportunities to develop new mines as coal markets change or to realise value from existing coal resources. To assist in this process, a set of mine project assessment guidelines which are relevant to the size and scale of anticipated mine developments have been developed for SENZ. These project guidelines are structured to operate from the early stages of project or resource review through to final feasibility study stage. The guidelines provide both a basis for planning and budgeting, and a control mechanism within the company. They also enable clear understanding of the status of individual projects and provide a framework for comparison between projects. SENZ now has a defined method to plan, monitor and control this important aspect of its business. The paper explains the development and structure of the guidelines, as well as providing examples of their application. and use. It demonstrates how SENZ integrates its long term planning, five year planning, annual planning, project planning and risk management to maximise the value of individual projects, business units and the company overall in a consistent manner.

In recent years in New Zealand there have been a number of tunnelling and deep directionally drilled pipelines projects that have required access shafts. Often these shafts are in urban environmentswhere vibration and high noise levels are not tolerable. There are a number of methodologies that can be adopted dependent upon the shaft plan area, depth and geology.This paper will describe some different methodologies that can be adopted that use piling methods such as large diameter piles, and secant piles. The paper will use case studies to highlight:· construction methodology,· specific methodology issues and constraints,· lessons learnt, and· recommended specifications.The development of piling technologies in New Zealand has enabled the development of cost effective solutions for the construction of deep shafts in sensitive urban environments.

A failure criterion for coal is proposed in which a distinction is made between brittle and "pseudo-ductile" failure. This criterion is then used in the development of new equations for coal pillar strength, including a transition from brittle fracture to pseudo-ductile yielding. In addition, equations are obtained which allow the äritical minimum pillar dimensions to be calculated to avoid "catastrophic" and "ultimate failure". The use of these formulae is then demonstrated by comparing the results with pillar case histories derived from the literature.

"Ore is the economic portion of a mineral deposit that can be extracted economically. Hence an ore type is a classification of the ore based on one or more dominant characteristics in order to enable communication between unit operations and/or technical disciplines.In project evaluation, ore types are often defined early based on geological observations by geologists and initial metallurgical testing is based around this classification even though a number of processing options can be under evaluation. However, the geological drivers of performance for each of these processes can be very different and the ore type classification for one process may not be relevant for another. In operations an ore type, as either defined in the project evaluation phase or those that evolve with additional knowledge, is unlikely to provide the knowledge required across all the unit operations. The ore type has a meaning to someone but does not necessarily for all unit operations across the value chain.Geometallurgical or orebody knowledge has evolved through the consideration of multiple processes within the value chain, the improved understanding of variability of process performance within ore types and the effect on the complexity of the mineral extraction processes. Furthermore orebody knowledge has been moving from personal based knowledge and understanding to a more process oriented approach where measurement and spatial and process performance modelling is playing a greater role. Advances in mine planning and scheduling allow for both detailed analysis of the block model and the expected extraction processing attributes across various time scales. This capability of analysing and describing the complexity still requires to be communicated to the various unit operations, which may be beyond the traditional classification of an ore type.The limitations of an ore type and potential alternatives to enable the relevant information to be communicated to the relevant groups are outlined through a number of case examples across the value chain.CITATION:Jackson, J and Young, M F, 2016. About 60 per cent of magnesite ores of Haicheng Magnesium Mine, due to their low grade, are not currently commercially exploitable. In this paper, the flotabilities of the main component minerals of the ores were studied in detail with ether amine as collector. Based on. these, a new technique of reverse-direct flotation with single etheramine as collector for the beneficiation of the ores was developed. It gave highly satisfactory results. On the basis of the calculation by means of CNDO/2 method, of the studies of the solution chemistry of magnesite and of the adsorption tests and Zeta-potential measurements, the key mechanism in the new technique about activating effect of Ca2+ on the flotation of magnesite was suggested.

The five main ways in which coal is used are1. for electricity generation,2. as a lump fuel for domestic and industrial purposes,3. for gas making,4. for making carbon for chemical and metallurgicalindustry, and5. as a source of coal tar and coal-tar chemicals.In the past about 80 per cent of Victoria's brown coal has been used for power generation and the rest for making a lump fuel, in the form of briquettes. Some of these briquettes have been used for gas making, and a carbon industry based on them has recently been commenced, and could expand rapidly. However the enormous increases expected in power requirements, approximately a doubling every 10 years, will ensure that even if the manufacture of carbon increases dramatically and a large amount of coal is used for other purposes, the brown coal industry will always be dominated by power generation. As new fuels such as natural gas, oil, and nuclear fuel become available at competitive prices these will take their share of the power generation load.Natural gas or oil, or possibly pumped storage hydro, will almost certainly be used for all future peak-load stations, comprising around 40 per cent of the total installed generating capacity, but new base load stations will continue to be designed for brown coal operation until about the mid-1980s, by which time nuclear power stations will become competitive. By this time Victoria will have installed about 6000 MW capacity of brown coal stations, burning around 50 million tons/year of coal, compared with 18 million tons/year at present, with perhaps 15 million tons/year being used for other purposes.This consumption of 65 million tons/year should then remain fairly stable over the life of the power stations installed, well into the 21st century. Brown coal therefore appears to have an assured place in providinga major part of Victoria's fuel requirements, despite the diversification in fuel usage pattern which appears certain to occur with the recent developments in new fuel resources.

In this paper, the use of topology preserving projections (Sammon maps) and neural networks are considered as a basis for the construction of multivariate statistical process control charts for a semi-autogenous grinding circuit on a gold plant. Comminution circuits are often operated in a quasi-steady state mode, where the mills tend to move rapidly from one state to another. This makes them difficult to monitor by conventional means designed for continuous steady state processes. As a first step, process data reflecting normal operating conditions are mapped with SammonÆs algorithm. Only one feature is extracted at a time and each mapping is captured by a neural network model to allow online application. Reverse neural network models are used to reconstruct the data prior to the extraction of subsequent features from the data residuals. The ensemble of neural network models can then be used for both fault detection and identification. The approach compared favourable with both linear and non-linear principal component models. It was able to detect two simulated fault conditions both with a reliability of 100 per cent, as opposed to 57.8 per cent and 95.2 per cent detected by an approach based on the use of linear principal component analysis and 84.1 per cent and 98.0 per cent detected by an approach based on non-linear principal components extracted with auto-associative neural networks.

The kinetics of cementation of silver chloro-complexes from sodium chloride solutions onto copper and zinc was studied using rotating disc electrode system. The activation energies were found to be 10.8 and 30.5 k7/mole, in a 3M NaCl solution on copper and zinc discs, respectively. Higher dissolution factors were obtained on zinc disc, due to hydrogen evolution, whereas, copper dissolved close to the predicted values. Scanning electron microscope studies were conducted both on copper and zinc- cdiscs-to evaluate the deposit morphology and its effect on reaction kinetics. Two stage deposit growth was observed both on copper and zinc discs. Smooth, coherent initial deposit followed by tree-like secondary dendrites formed on copper, whereas, scattered bulbous initial deposit followed by porous dendrites was typical on zinc disc.

Managers are demanding efficient use of their resources and part of this demand is leading to the idea of integrated audits for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), quality and the environment. It is possible to construct audits which test the compliance in this area with standards established by management systems and it may be that such an integrated audit of a site could reduce the time of auditing and be equally effective as three separate audits. However, this is only a maybe. To do an audit on all three aspects when they are not fully integrated results in more time wastage than doing three separate audits. But organisations are not structured around the audit process (some financial managers may query this statement). The organisational management systems are put in place to achieve the organisational goals - presumably in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Each of these components impact to varying degrees on the recoverable metal or product of a new mining project. The topic for my address is Sharemarket Floats - Issues for Expert Valuers. I've decided to focus on three areas where current practice in the preparation of prospectus valuation reports for resource companies might be improved. My central theme is that the valuer for a float should augment the usual assessments of the value of the company or its assets, with some input on the way the share market might value the company's shares when they are listed. I will then look at the valuer's role in relation to vendor consideration, last I will look at his role in providing investors with some input on the risk dimensions of the new company.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. It gives me great pleasure to talk to you today about a pet subject of mine, on when to mill and when to leach gold ores. According to Gold Fields Mineral Services of London, gold production in the United States in 1989 amounted to about 8.5 million ounces (259t), an increase of 29 per cent over 1988 and 67 per cent over 1987. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reports that from the major producing states of Nevada, California, Montana, and Alaska, some3.2million ounces of the 1989 production were produced from milling gold ores and 2.3 million ounces from heap or dump leaching. Ap- proximately 45 million tons of ore were milled and 140 million tons of ore were heap or dump leached.

The cylinder test allows us to determine the expansion of a copper cylinder by the detonation of an explosive charge inside. This test, originally designed for military explosives, has been adapted for industrial explosives with non-ideal behaviour. From data obtained with this test and known physical relationships, an analytical procedure has been developed to calculate the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) equation of state parameters for five ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) and six emulsion-type explosives. A new radial wall expansion function is proposed considering a non-zero initial velocity with the consequent positive Gurney energy at unit relative volume. A set of equations is established to determine the JWL parameters, three of them obtained at the Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) point and the other three at different relative volumes. These equations, along with some constraints to ensure a physically sound solution, are solved for the JWL parameters by a non-linear least squares scheme. A 2D Lagrangian axisymmetric finite elements (FE) numerical model is developed for each tested explosive to validate the analytical results, in terms of expansion histories, with good agreement. This confirms that the set of conditions, constraints on the parameters and least squares calculation used constitute a robust methodology that fully captures the physics of the detonation products expansion involved in the cylinder test.CITATION:Castedo, R, Sanchidrián, J A, López, L M, Segarra, P and Santos, A P, 2015. Many Australian tunnelling and mining companies regularly investigate different methods or equipment in an attempt to keep ahead of their competition. Sometimes the result is a new approach or process which wins a tender or provides an advanced solution to a problem.The Australian Government has a policy of encouraging forward thinking among Australian companies and provides a range of incentives. One of these incentives is currently available retrospectively to 1985 - 86, and the registration process is relatively simple with only one form to be completed. Companies who investigate methods of raising productivity could be reimbursed for the costs of the investigation.

The population balance concept has provided a useful framework for the description of the operating behavior of the ball mill. This approach finds expression in the so-called selection breakage function model for batch and continuous mills. This model produces very good descriptions of the size distribution of the products from ball milling operations and the model is very useful for the description of batch and continuous mills and, when combined with models for classifiers and other unit operations, provides a solid basis for flowsheet simulation procedures. The breakage and selection function model is essentially descriptive and not predictive because the parameters in the model cannot as yet be related to the fundamental material properties of the material that is broken and to the fracture mechanics that govern the comminution of brittle particulate material during the rapid impact and compression events that occur with high frequency in a ball mill. The population balance approach smears over the individual processes and regards the ball mill as a continuum with breakage occurring continuously in time and space. New experimental techniques, particularly the adaptation of the Hopkinson bar as the ultrafast load cell (UFLC) to the problem of observing the extremely rapid impact fracture of particulate solids, have made it possible to make accurate and consistent measurements of particle strength, particle fracture energy and the single-impact breakage function. These quantitative measurements have been incorporated into a new conceptual model for the description of the ball mill. The model is based on identifying all events that give rise to particle breakage, and using the fundamental experimental data obtained on the UFLC and other single-particle fracture tests, the probabilities of these events can be independently determined. The distribution of impact energies that occur in the ball mill has been established by discrete element simulation of the media motion. The probabilistic description of the individual fracture events and the distribution of impact energies are combined to make a priori predictions of ball mill performance under a variety of operating conditions. The new model is used to calculate the selection and breakage functions for quartz in a small batch mill.
