A major problem that has continued to plague the surface and underground coal industries is blast induced damage to the coal seam. Blasting Analysis International, in conjunction with a number of other organizations, has continued to address this concern through 14 years of field research in 68 full-scale production environments worldwide. Compiled results were obtained from varying field conditions. These included single and multiple seam coal mines, horizontal, rolling and steeply dipping coal seams and varied borehole diameters (ranging from 102 to 381 mm) and when using various explosive formulations. Results are discussed in detail along with the tools, test methods and analysis techniques to identify and quantify the problems. Over ten major causes of coal damage were identified. A number of practical and economic recommendations are presented that can benefit the entire coal and blasting industry especially in commercial operations whose economic growth relies heavily upon recovering an undamaged coal seam.

Marcobre SAC (Marcobre) is developing the Mina Justa copper mine project, located in the Ica region of Peru. The Mina Justa IOCG orebody comprises of a sulfide mass overlain by an oxide cap with a sharp transitional zone between the sulfide and oxide masses. The primary target metal is copper, but there are minor amounts of gold and silver. The oxide will be treated by HPGR, crushing and vat leaching, whereas the sulfide will be treated by HPGR, milling and froth flotation. The processing selections are due to some unusual ore characteristics which have required relatively unconventional solutions.Vat leaching was chosen over heap leaching and other processes after detailed trade-off studies found it to be the most attractive, primarily due to the high acid consumption of the ore. The sulfide flotation produces a wide range of concentrate grades due to the complex nature of the mineralogy. The selection of HPGR circuits for both the oxide and sulfide ore is due to the extremely hard and competent nature of the deposit. The conversion relationship between the Bond Work Index W1, specific output of mill and the energy efficiency of grinding were developed using dimensional analysis. These relationships were validated and the value of the conversion coefficient ~ was also obtained using a new installed device for measuring grindability of ores. With the new simulating algorithm the mill specifications, output and size distribution of grinding products of industrial mills can be calculated based on laboratory measured results. Roasting of sulphide and sulph-arsenide gold ores produces unwanted emission of sulphur and arsenic oxides, and a less than complete recovery of gold. Pyrite loses sulphur and arsenopyrite loses arsenic at a useful rate at temperatures of 600¦C and above in an inert atmosphere. Sulphur and arsenic driven off can be condensed before entering the atmosphere. During the process, solid-solution gold redistributes itself on internal surfaces of the resulting iron sulphide. Two subsequent processing options may be used; direct cyanidation of the porous sulphide resulting from the anoxic pyrolysis, or a second-stage roast to oxidise the remaining iron sulphide. The first option may be viable under certain conditions of pyrolysis. The two-stage option has an environmental advantage over the traditional roast because it reduces oxide vapour emissions by 50 per cent. The second stage may provide nearly enough energy to sustain the entire process.

Therefore the challenge to find new solutions is usually met by several suppliers under various factors of influence affecting specifications. Time and timing are particularly important, but all new developments ultimately have to successfully perform on site.Consideration of all aspects of planning, manufacturing, user liaison and ultimate satisfactory commissioning hinges on the necessities of assessing of all the expectations in the mining application and the requirements of the concept and layout team. To apply the maximum available technical competence with solid thorough workmanship is the best possible foundation for success of underground machinery development.

Tower Mills are used at Aberfoyle's newly commissioned Hellyer base metal sulphide concentrator. Hellyer ore is particularly fine grained. To achieve adequate liberation fine grinding is necessary. Three Tower Mills are used on regrind duties, grinding to less than 20 microns. The physical arrangement, material flows and grinding characteristics for the Hellyer Tower Mills are described. The mills have performed satisfactorily, both in size reduction and power efficiency. Wear parts must be inspected and changed more often than with ball Mills. To date, 92 per cent availability has been achieved. As parts and maintenance routines are rationalised, this is expected to improve to 96 per cent. Modifications to wear parts for the Hellyer Tower Mills are discussed.lhc Tower Mill grinding environment is highly reducing. The impact of Tower Mill regrind on downstream flotation is discussed.

It is difficult with inadvertent explosions to establish fundamental data, especially of original dust, of pressure, temperature etc. and of ventilation oscillations, as exposed personnel rarely survive. Retrospective data from explosions must be derived from damage, from fatalities, from ventilation analyses, from analyses of dusts and other indications of temp- erature and duration of temperature. The five disastrous explosions selected for analysis provide examples of what data can be established as to the cause and extent of explosions. Such information is required for legal etc., inquiries subsequent to explosions, but most importantly to give the best guidance for avoidance of possibility of further Disasters.

A significant number of new techniques have been developed, and Australian companies are now at the forefront of exploration technology worldwide. The geotechnical factors controlling the design of the open pit slopes of the Pasminco Century Mine near Lawn Hill, Queensland are presented below. Pasminco Century is a stratiform shale hosted zinc deposit in the Lawn Hill Formation that is overlain in part by the Thorntonia Limestone Formation. Both the mineralisation and overburden is located within a competent rock mass such that intact rock strength and discontinuity spacing is generally sufficient to prevent large-scale slope failure by breakage through the rock mass. Rather, overall slope stability issues are dominated by the major discontinuities within the rock mass. The deposit is located in a structurally complex regime, it consists of a synclinal basin which is truncated by easterly striking normal faults through its centre and northern and southern limits and by an unconformity on its eastern and western margins. Deposit geometry and slope stability is further complicated by small-scale folding, a pattern of northeast and southeast striking subvertical faults and north easterly dipping thrust faults with their associated fault emplaced blocks of Lawn Hill Formation in the overburden. The large size of the deposit requires a staged mining approach with the excavation of both final pit walls around the external sides of each stage and interim pit walls along the internal boundaries between adjacent stages. The deposit geometry and major discontinuities control not only the final pit wall design but also interim wall location and orientation, excavation sequence and in some stages the excavation schedule. Two and three-dimensional limit equilibrium stability analyses were conducted using both deterministic and probabilistic approaches to determine appropriate pit wall design criteria and to select a suitable excavation sequence and schedule.

In November 1969, New Zealand Steel Ltd pioneered the commercial use of the SL/RN solid fuel direct reduction process to make sponge iron as a feed material for electric arc furnaces. Serious process problems with the use of green balls and coal injection were progressively overcome. The process was developed by New Zealand Steel along a radical route, of feeding the fine grained raw ironsand concentrate and coal directly to the kiln. Contemporaneously with this development of direct reduction, steelmaking process innovations were made that enabled the arc furnaces to operate successfully with the high volumes of acid slag.

In Wisconsin, state laws and regulations governing metallic mine permitting stipulate that protection of groundwater quality be assured indefinitely through all phases of the mining project, including development, active mining, reclamation, and long-term closure. By rule, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) requires that permit applicants use a numerical model to assist in the assessment of compliance with this requirement for all proposed mine-waste facilities. As a part of the compliance assessment, model calculations are used to predict groundwater solute concentrations through time at designated boundaries for comparison to current groundwater quality standards. In practice, this modelling requirement has involved the application of numerical solute-transport models. Our review of a solute-transport model submitted by the developers of a proposed mine near Crandon, Wisconsin, provides us with an opportunity to assess the usefulness of transport modelling as a permitting requirement. Recent evaluations of solute-transport models by other workers suggest limitations in predictive accuracy. Our review of the model submitted for this project also identified important limitations due primarily to uncertainty in calibration of model parameters at the undeveloped site. The utility of any model to predict project compliance or non-compliance with numerical standards is limited by the range of uncertainty of key model parameters, such as dispersivity and porosity. Uncertainty in the future behaviour of the solute source(s) also reduces the predictive power. Moreover, the site characterisation provided by the model may have limited power to describe the site condition post-development. Although these inherent shortcomings accompany the use of solute transport models at undeveloped sites, the requirement for model development and the ensuing technical review has substantially assisted in our evaluation of site conditions and project design. Through this process we have identified elements of the waste facility design that are crucial to the environmental viability of the project, resulting in modifications to original project proposals. While results from this model review will be used to evaluate compliance, additional benefits come from the identification of critical design features that enhance groundwater protection.

Background BHP Iron Ore Pty Ltd is one of the major iron ore producers in the Pilbara Region of North Western Australia. The company manages three separate joint ventures; the Newman, Goldsworthy and Yandi joint ventures and two 100 per cent owned operations, Yampi and Jimblebar. The Newman operations constitute a mine site at Newman and a 426 km railroad to Port Hedland where there is an ore processing/port site. The Goldsworthy operations currently constitute a mine site at Shay Gap/Nimingarra, a developing mine site at Yarrie, a decommissioned mine site at Goldsworthy and an ore processing/port site at Finucane Island (Port Hedland). The Yandi operations include mining and processing facilities at site and a spur line to join the Newman Hedland railroad. Jimblebar operations are scree and bedrock mining near Newman and include mining, processing and a spur line to Newman where it joins the Newman-Hedland railroad. The Yampi operations constitute a mine/port site at Koolan Island (which is presently being decommissioned). The combined BHP Iron Ore operations produce approximately 46 Mtpa of iron ore. This paper will concentrate on the processes developed and applied for the decommissioning of the Goldsworthy site. The Goldsworthy site is on the northern boundary of the Pilbara Region and adjacent to the western extremity of the Great Sandy Desert. It is located approximately 110 km east of Port Hedland (see Figure 1). The area is generally of low relief with isolated low ranges. The mine site being within the Mount Goldsworthy range area. The geology of the area is essentially Archaean granite with Archaean banded iron formation becoming dominant within the ranges. The chief soils are hard alkaline red soils. The vegetation is essentially shrub steppe with the main hummock grass species being spinifex (Triodia sp). The climate for the region is semi arid tropical. The temperature ranges from a mean low of 15¦C in winter to a mean high of 40¦ in summer. Rainfall is episodic, occurring mainly throughout the summer as a result of tropical depressions or cyclonic activity. The average annual rainfall is approximately 300 mm and annual evaporation may exceed rainfall by up to 2500 mm. Goldsworthy Mining Ltd commissioned the Goldsworthy site in 1965/66. Goldsworthy was the first iron ore operation and associated town site in the Pilbara region. The mine development peaked in 1977 with the town population reaching 1400 people. In 1982 mining ceased and the mining operations were relocated to Shay Gap, 80 km east of Goldsworthy. The Goldsworthy town continued as the base for the railing operations between Finucane Island and Shay Gap. BHP Minerals acquired Goldsworthy Mining Limited in 1990. The population for the town of Goldsworthy at this stage was around 450 people. An assessment of the Goldsworthy site operations concluded that it was uneconomic to continue the operation of the site. The decision was made to transfer the base for railing operations to Port

Coal mining can lead to the occurrence of spontaneous combustion events. If these events are not prevented they can give rise to fires that have major adverse effects on the mine plan. After studying the chemical structure of coal, the theories of self-ignition and of the oxidation reaction of the organic compounds, two new technologies have been developed for fire prevention based on the inhibition of coal oxidation. The first technology consists of spraying water drops mixed with inhibiting substances into goaves. The second consists of the infusion of a mixture made of several chemical compounds. Tests performed in situ showed the new inhibition technologies to be highly effective even for longwalls mining coal with a high reactivity from the point of view of self-ignition.

North American steelmaking practices have evolved based on access to iron ore raw materials containing very low phosphorus contents, typically less than 0.025 per cent P. Cleveland-Cliffs managed Tilden iron ore operation produces iron ore pellets exceeding 0.030 per cent P, which by global standards would be considered low phosphorus, but has limited penetration in the North American iron ore market due to phosphorus content. Recently cathodoluminescence microscopy has augmented more standard ore characterisation techniques enhancing our understanding of the genetic history and process mineralogy of TildenÆs complex martite ore. This paper highlights the unique capabilities that cathodoluminescence microscopy provides for phosphorus mineral identification in fine-grained iron ores.

The Izok massive sulphide deposits are located in the Northwest Territories of the remote western Canadian Arctic. Together they represent one of the highest grade undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. Metall Mining Corporation is presently engaged in a feasibility study on developing the Izok property as well as actively exploring for additional reserves. The Izok deposits are Archean-aged, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) bodies hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks. The hangingwall package includes additional felsic volcanoclastics, dacitic and basaltic flows, thin sulphide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sediments. The felsic volcanics are intruded by syn- to late-hydrothermal dacitic dykes and sills and post-hydrothermal gabbroic dykes and sills. Both intrusives are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to overlying flows. All lithologies are cut by much later irregular granitic pegmatite dykes and regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene homfels grade. The deposits occur within a large kilometre-scale soda-depleted alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hangingwall rocks to the deposits are characterised by zones of muscovite-biotite (with or without sillimanite), lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite (with or without anthophyllite), and locally intense silicificified and albitised zones. All lithologies have been affected by a later calcic metasomatic alteration. As currently defined, the Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag deposits comprise a cluster of four complexly-zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central, and newly discovered Inukshuk deposits. The first three deposits are amenable to open pit mining while development of the Inukshuk deposit will require underground methods. The combined mineral inventory of the Northwest, North, Central and Inukshuk deposits at present totals 15.6 million tonnes with a grade of 2.4 per cent Cu, 13.8 per cent Zn, 1.4 per cent Pb, and 74.6 g/t Ag.

Mining companies around the world are seeking methods to coordinate operations between the mine and the concentrator to achieve an overall improvement in enterprise performance. In several instances very significant increases in productivity (more than 20 per cent) and profitability (more than $US 10M per annum) have resulted from such efforts. The key to realising these large benefits has for the most part arisen from improved communication between mining operations and plant operations personnel and the judicious use of new tools to evaluate alternatives for improvement and to minimise the risk of implementation. This paper presents a systematic approach to mine-to-mill optimisation . The importance of systemic thinking and systems optimisation methodologies is emphasised. New tools for evaluating operational performance are discussed. Recently reported benefits are summarised. Finally current research is discussed and projections for the future are given.

With a view to producing increased target output every year, Indian coal mining industry is fast moving towards mechanisation but the present approach of mechanisation suffers from lack of standardisation, mainly due to nonavailability of the cutting data for various machine/rock combinations. The coal seams of the country are relatively hard in nature and the coaling machines are reported to be affecting production and productivity of the coal mine and the very trend of niechanisation. This paper presents the result of extensive study performed to visualise the cutting characteristics of coal seams of compressive strength ranging from 20 MPa to 65 NIPa. In a specially designed drag bit type coal plough rig, continuous recording of cutting forces was done with the help of a microprocessor based data logger and the specific energy of cuttability was evaluated at different depth of cut and speed of cutting. The geomechanical properties such as compressive strength, orientation and frequency of cleats etc. and different indices of coal seams were measured in the laboratory and field and relationship was developed for easy determination of specific energy.

This research work is concerned with an investigation of the fracture toughness of sandstone, siltstone, and coal. Tensile failure trades have been examined with three different specimen geonetries, i.e; rectangular bar, round bar (in three point bending), and diametral compression discs. The Stress intensity approach, and J-integral methods were used to evaluate fracture toughness. Results from both approaches are discussed. True crack length was determined after pre-cracking, using the compliance calibration technique. Fracture toughness results of sandstone are independent of crack length and the size of the specimen. Fracture toughness may hence be regarded as a material property for sandstone. In cxnntrast fracture toughness values for !siltstone and coal are dependent on crack Length.

"The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) currently supports nine individual industry working groups focused on developing standards and guidelines for the mining industry. In 2013 the GMSG established the Industrial Comminution Efficiency (ICE) working group to develop freely available guidelines for plant operators to quantify the operating efficiency of industrial comminution circuits. This initiative has engaged a diverse group of representatives from mining companies, equipment vendors, consultants and metallurgical laboratories with vast experience and capabilities in the field of comminution. The GMSG has issued the first two guidelines from the ICE working group in 2015–2016, with the third guideline having completed the approvals process and being in the final stages of editing ahead of release later in 2016.Two of the ICE guidelines present methods to quantify comminution circuit efficiency, and a complementary guideline describes best practice methods to collect the necessary samples and data to furnish these assessments. Collectively the guidelines cover sampling, survey data collection, laboratory testing procedures and calculation processes to allow the user to generate a relative circuit efficiency factor for the comminution circuit at the time of survey. The reference energy consumption is calculated considering the measured F80, P80 and ore strength at the time of survey, using either or both of the Bond or Morrell methods presented in GMSG guidelines dedicated to each method. The guidelines consequently provide the end user with practical tools to perform circuit efficiency analysis and to readily quantify the impact of optimisation efforts.This paper presents the content of the three ICE guidelines and describes their intended application.Citation:Giblett, A and Daniel, M, 2016. Solid Energy New Zealand Limited (æSolid EnergyÆ) is a state-owned coal mining company, producing 4.0 Mtpa from a number of opencast and underground mines in the Huntly, West Coast and Southland regions in New Zealand. The company currently exports 2.1 Mtpa of coking coal. Exports are expected to grow strongly over the next five year as the company expands production into new semi-soft and thermal coal reserves. Domestic coal demand is also expected to grow strongly, particularly in the North Island, as the Maui gas field reserves diminish, and thermal coal becomes more important for electricity generation and meeting the energy needs of forest processing and other industries.
