The processing of black coal in Australia segregates waste in the form of coarse reject and fine tailings. The coarse reject is relatively easy to handle, while the tailings can be problematic. Conventionally, the two waste materials are disposed of separately, the coarse reject in dumps, and the tailings in man-made containments. Aqueous tailings slurry is pumped to a 'wet' tailings storage, where the fine particle size of the tailings limits dewatering. Their low bearing capacity and high compressibility result in tailings deposits being difficult to rehabilitate. Disposing of the waste streams separately moves away from the heterogeneous mixture in the undisturbed ground, and concentrates potential problems with each waste stream. The feasibility and desirability of the co-disposal of tailings and coarse reject by combined pumping is demonstrated. This technique is in operation at Jeebropilly Mine and is proposed for a number of other coal mines.

The paper summarises the theoretical and experimental studies which led to the development of new industrial equipment designed to recover liberated gold from placer gravity concentrates. The new technology is based on environmentally clean magnetic methods, which avoids use of mercury in the production process and obtains higher gold recoveries compared to the amalgamation technique, and which can reach 98.6 - 99.5 per cent. The complex of equipment thus developed is now commercially used at nine Russian gold mining operations. Six more such complexes are due to come on stream in 1993, some of them outside the CIS. The new technology appears to hold much promise for the recovery of precious stones (diamonds, rubies etc) semi-precious stones (pyropes, chrysolites etc) and also artificial diamonds, for which case there are encouraging laboratory results.

The Tennant Creek goldfield is one of the largest gold producing districts in Australia, and major deposits, including Gecko, Juno, Orlando, Peko, Warrego, Nobles Nob, Golden Forty, Argo, TC 8 and White Devil have produced more than four million ounces of gold over the past two decades. Gold-copper-bismuth mineralisation at Tennant Creek occurs in lenticular, ellipsoidal or pipe-like bodies of magnetite-hematite ironstones which are hosted in turbiditic sedimentary rocks of Proterozoic age (Large, 1975; Wedekind, Large and Williams, 1989; Le Messurier, Williams and Blake, 1990; Morrison, Donnellan and Hussey, 1992).

Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in the southern Mongolia holds mineral resources that make it one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. The project is operating an open pit mine on the near surface of Southern Oyu deposit and developing underground block-caving mine at the Hugo Dummet North where 80 per cent of total resources exists. Oyu Tolgoi (OT) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and implemented an industry standard blasthole sampling, and ordinary kriging grade control estimation with block-out process. Since 2017, grade control improvement projects have successfully completed that have led to the implementation of current, improved grade control system. Geological model is updated by blasthole logging on Leapfrog® and used for daily grade estimations. GC estimation is proceeded solely on Vulcan® by running Lava script and integrating with a relational database. Combination of block-out procedure produces GC model which is updated in Vulcan® and as well as in the database simultaneously. Switching to the integrated database eliminated many manual processes such as importing and exporting data and enabled access to the database anytime, anywhere and from any device. Thereby, these improvements allowed to increase an efficiency, create a comprehensive reconciliation system and reduce operational risks. We are looking forward to expanding applications of integrated grade control data stored in the database. This paper outlines how the grade control system was developed at OT’s open pit mine, and how it is integrated into the short range mine planning, mine reconciliation workflow and ultimately enabled development of various automated reporting systems.

The Victorian State Government recognises that the extensive brown coal deposits in Victoria are one of the State's key competitive strengths for economic development. The unique properties of the coal, together with the ease of open cut mining, make it suitable for a variety of new applications. Research and development activities are centred around applications which take advantage of the natural attributes and unique properties of the coal. The high reactivity and low ash content of the coal led to its selection for the Japanese brown coal liquefaction pilot plant currently operating in the Latrobe Valley, with support from the Victorian Government and the Coal Corporation of Victoria. Research and development of new brown coal based products together with many other areas of applied and fundamental research are being conducted in Victoria by Government research organisations, tertiary insti- tutions and private industry, with the objective of establishing new indus- trial developments based on Victoria's vast brown coal resource.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the main points in the construction of the various types of wire ropes more commonly used for winding in Australia; and the maintenance of the ropes, and cage and skip safety gear as practised at the South mine, Broken Hill.It should be mentioned that both of the shafts at present in use are dry, and both downcast with or without the assistance of the two exhaust fans normally in use: Night shift and week.-end overtime are practicaly non-existent.Thus, during night shift, the cages in No. 7 shaft are landed on the chairs at the surface, providing efficient covers for the· shaft, and allowing the maximum amount of rope to be wound on to the drums. This also applies to the cages of both No. 7 and No. 4 shafts during the week-ends.These factors, combined with electric winding and skip haulage, are calculated to obtain the best use of the ropes when properly attended.WINDING ROPES-TYPE AND CONSTRUCTIONThese ropes may be divided into four main types which will include the more commonly used constructions(a) One-size strand.(b) Warrington strand.(c) Flattened strand.(d) Locked coil.1. In July 1994 the Premier, John Fahey MP, announced that the New South Wales Government would make available a total of $40 million over six years in new funding for the Department of Mineral Resources. These funds are to be applied directly to the generation of regional geological and geophysical information. The Government's initiative known as `Discovery 2000', is aimed at providing a major boost to the exploration industry. The Government expects new discoveries to be made and new mines to be developed because of the initiative and, perhaps, the first ever commercial oil or gas production in New South Wales. The Government's return will come from increased economic activity, and from the increased royalty return from higher levels of production. Quality information is the key to successful exploration. In the highly competitive business of mineral and petroleum exploration high quality regional geological and geophysical information improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of the area selection or project generation process. Using the `needle in the hay stack' analogy, Discovery 2000 will vastly improve industry's chances of finding the haystacks. It is up to the mineral and petroleum industries to find their respective `needles'. Careful target area selection is probably the most critical factor in mineral exploration. The ability to select the most prospective areas, or to identify prospectivity that others have failed to recognise, can make all the difference between success and failure. Government geological surveys clearly have a crucial role to play in providing the geoscientific information infrastructure that companies must have if they are to make the discoveries this country needs to pay its way in the world. It is the regional information generated by Governments that sets the scene for efficient exploration. This regional information includes regional aeromagnetics and radiometrics and gravity, regional geological mapping and tectonic analysis, and geoscientific databases. The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources (by various names) has been providing such information for over 100 years and has led the way in many aspects of the generation and dissemination of geological, geophysical and metallogenic Information.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baizhangzi gold deposit is located in the northern North China Craton. The structural and lithological controls on the location and geometry of orebodies were studied through geologic survey, ore spatial configuration analysis and structural analysis. The orebodies of the deposit comprise auriferous quartz-sulfide veins and disseminated gold-bearing sulfides. The auriferous quartz-sulfide veins are dominantly hosted by the NNE- (and NE- and NW-) trending faults, which are subsidiary structures of the regional NNE-trending F2 fault. The subsidiary NNE-trending faults, having sinistral reverse kinematics, are associated with the sinistral reverse kinematics event of the F2 fault, which happened under a regional S–N-oriented compression stress field. The subsidiary NE- and NW-trending faults appear to be compressive and extensional respectively. These NE- (and NW-) trending faults are restricted to the granite intrusion and are associated with a sinistral strike-slip event of the F2 fault, which reactivated under a NW–SE-oriented compression stress field. It makes significant influence on geological evolution and distribution of different ore types that the strike of the F2 fault presents significant transition from NNE- to NE-trending in vertical. The ore-bearing disseminated host rocks, with widespread silicification and pyritisation, distribute in the lower inner contact zone of the granite intrusion, especially in the lower wavelike boundary of granite intrusion.CITATION:Xiong, L, Wei, J H and Shi, W J, 2015. Jaspilites and underlying basalt contacts of the Archaean volcano- sedimentary Grpo Parß Group, Carajßs, host giant iron mineralisation in the ~100-km long, E-W trending Carajßs fold. Preliminary, unpublished geochronological data point to a Palaeoproterozoic mineralisation event. Geochemically, jaspilites are typical volcanogenic banded iron formations. Basalts exhibit evidence of spilitic seawater interaction. Iron-associated hydrothermal alteration of mafic rocks was induced by fluid infiltration in amygdales, with development of chlorite- and hematite-dominated zones. In the case of jaspilites, iron mineralisation encompasses: partial replacement of jaspilitic microcrystalline hematite by blasts of martitic magnetite; jasper recrystallisation, producing fine-grained, hematite-free granoblastic quartz; martite recrystallisation, forming lobate¦subhedral hematite; pervasive porosity development by quartz-chert leaching; incipient cavity filling by microlamellar hematite; and advanced filling by coarser, euhedral and comb-textured, tabular- shaped hematite.Peak hydrothermal ore textures indicate typical epithermal-crust conditions, supported by preliminary fluid-inclusion calculations at 160 - 200¦C. Such temperatures and extreme fluid-to-rock ratios during alteration must have exceeded the ambient metamorphic conditions, with the infiltrating fluid relatively hot and capable of leaching SiO2. Therefore, mineralisation developed over exhumed, Archaean, brittly deformed rocks, with mineral associations representative of very low- to low-grade metamorphism. Considering that chlorite (¦talc) abounds in mafic rocks; hydrothermal albite is developed; dolomite fills veins and vugs; the typical rare-earth-element (REE) pattern of jaspilites is significantly modified in higher-grade hard hematite ores (higher LREE); pyrite, copper sulfide minerals and rare gold occur in association with carbonate-quartz-rich alteration zones, it is suggested that an alkaline, H2O-Fe-CO2 mineralising fluid dominated, also containing species like S¦Cu¦Au. Peak-mineralising conditions are likely to have resulted from a single, evolving fluid, via incipient- through advanced-stage alteration phases. The porous, high-grade soft hematite-type ore (SH), rich in microlamellar and anhedral hematite, must have derived from interaction with this relatively hot SiO2-leaching fluid, whereas the high-grade massive hard hematite-type ore (MH) developed due to closer fluid-rock temperature equilibrium conditions, attained by mineral reactions, with relative increase in the Fe/Σcations ratios allowing the precipitation of subhedral-tabular hematite that partially cements the soft-hematite ore. SH and MH hematite ore types must thus reflect intermediate and high fluid:rock ratios, respectively. Since the N5 deposit is to date understood to contain the largest amount of the MH ore, its units are interpreted as the loci of the highest fluid:rock ratios in the district. Preliminary mineralogical information regarding the S11 deposit of the Serra Sul (south range) implies higher-temperature conditions. The near-equant grain size and the granoblastic intergrain relationship, coupled with the presence of riebeckite, augitic pyroxene and garnet, suggest hornfels textures. The data collected, though still relatively sparse, permit the speculation that the immense driving force for the Carajßs world-class iron deposits was a relatively shallow, igneous-related hydrothermal system. If such a model is correct, then the Carajßs Palaeoproterozoic iron deposits could represent an end-member of the iron oxide-copper-gold hydrothermal system in the province.

The fluorspar deposits at Okorusu, Namibia are closely related to an alkaline igneous ring complex of late Cretaceous age (125¦7 Ma). The fluorite ores consist of relatively fine-grained purple replacement fluorite and subsequent coarser-grained purple and green vug-filling fluorite crystals. Homogenisation temperature measurements for 38 primary fluid inclusions shows that main stage purple to green fluorite crystals were deposited over a temperature range from 166¦C to 144¦C, and minor late yellow fluorite was deposited at lower temperatures from 132¦C to 128¦C. Homogenisation and freezing temperatures measured for 18 primary fluid inclusions shows that the fluorite-depositing fluids were less saline than Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) ore fluids and overlap the lower temperature range of fluids that deposited epithermal ore deposits. Mining in three open pits (A, B and C) at Okorusu has gradually provided exposures which reveal that the fluorite orebodies have been emplaced primarily by the preferential replacement of carbonatites. Evidence for the replacement of carbonatite includes: replacement remnants of carbonatite within the fluorite ores; goethite pseudomorphs after the carbonatite minerals, pyroxene, pyrrhotite and magnetite, which are disseminated in the fluorite ores; andpartial replacement by fluorite of a large sill-like carbonatite body in the A pit. Electron microprobe analyses of minerals in unreplaced portions of the carbonatites show that their mineralogy consists of titaniferous magnetite, diopside pyroxene, apatite, biotite and calcite. Magnetite contains 6.97 per cent to 10.46 per cent TiO2, averages 8.44 per cent TiO2, and has an average V2O3 content of 0.35 per cent. At high magnifications under the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the magnetite shows abundant fine ulv÷spinel exsolution lamellae arranged in a cloth texture. Apatite contains moderately high fluorine contents that range from 3.21 to 5.0 per cent and average 4.2 per cent, and apatite crystals range in total rare earth oxides from 1.7 per cent to 2.61 per cent. Pyroxenes in the carbonatites are iron-rich diopside, and they contrast to pyroxenes in the fenites that are aegirine-augite. All of the microprobe analyses for mica crystals in the carbonatites give biotite compositions. Microscopic examination of fluorite concentrates from Okorusu provides mineralogical information important to the resolution of beneficiation problems. Fluorite ores that are related to carbonatites are typically accompanied by phosphorus benefication problems. The cause for the presence of phosphate in some of the Okorusu fluorite concentrates is a function of the presence of binary locked fluorite-apatite particles. The fluorite ores have also replaced marble locally in the A pit, especially along the A band in the B pit, and dominantly in the orebody proposed for the new C pit. Those ores are characterised by fine grain sizes, faint remnant bedding, lack of carbonatite mineral pseudomorphs and local presence of remnants of unreplaced marble. Concentrates derived from those fluorite ores are devoid of phosphorus, but commonly have elevated silica contents due the presence of free quartz. Carbonatite and marble were preferentially replaced by fluorite because the calcite was readily soluble in the presence of the fluorite-depositing fluids and the dissolution of calcite provided calcium for the formation of fluorite.

Selection of mining methods, stope dimensions and stoping sequences is usually based on comparisons with other similar orebodies or rocktypes. Rock mechanics principles assist the process, which can be further improved by application of rock mechanics' models - in particular, computer based stress analysis techniques. These models vary in capabilities and potential application but, basically, can be subdivided into techniques which only model the surface of excavations, and those which model the total volume to be analysed. To address the wide range of geometries, stoping methods and sequences, and geomechanical environments at Mount Isa Mines, a number of models have been developed. By presenting examples of their actual and potential application it is demonstrated that appropriate use of these techniques will assist in the determination of mining parameters and improve ore recovery. Examples presented cover sequencing in tabular and massive orebodies, location of shafts and shaft pillars, and backfill and hanging-wall stability. It is concluded that surface techniques are more appropriate for regional analyses and volume techniques are more suited to analyses of detailed, local geometry. Colour computer graphics should be an integral part of data preparation, and results interpretation and Presentation.

The mineralogy of regolith material for which whole rock geochemistry has already been done can be used to better understand/rank the significance of geochemical anomalies. Case studies show that the secondary minerals of the regolith environment have quite different capacities to incorporate pathfinder and target elements, eg hematite appears to be a better host to Pb than goethite and Pb rich alunite-jarosite minerals are a better Ag host than mimetite. Thus correlations between elements in regolith material may be strongly affected by mineralogy. Understanding of the significance of a geochemical anomaly is frequently enhanced by knowledge of the weathering susceptibility of different minerals. For example, when a mineralogical sequence which does not correspond to the expected order is found (eg feldspar overlying weathered material without feldspars) it is possible that transported material is present in the profile. Such mineralogical information is particularly relevant as exploration continues into areas of thick regolith.

May I, at the very outset of this second gathering, congratulate the Institute on the great progress that has been made in the interval. At the first meeting in New Zealand in the year 1903, I understand that less than 20 persons were present, and now in the large concourse before me I believe there are not fewer than 140 persons, while if every member of the Institute to-day where here there would be over 500 which is a great change from a membership of only 250 in 1903. I feel deeply appreciative of the honour you have conferred upon me by electing me your President for the year 1911. In return for the compliment, may I ask you to believe that I shall do everything in my power to further the interests of the Institute throughout the coming year.It is a great regret to me to realise that soon my work in New Zealand will be over. Over the last decade mineral exploration in New South Wales has increased markedly. This is due to various factors including the influx of overseas companies an. capital, increase and stabilization of metal prices and improvements in exploration techniques. The initiation of full-scale petroleum exploration and recent discoveries of large mineral deposits in the west, north-west and north of Australia has increased overseas capital, and brought scientists and technicians into the country. Naturally there has been an overflow into New South Wales, which is less attractive as an area for new and large-scale discoveries. In some fields, rise in metal prices and price stabilization has largely contributed to the intensif- ication of exploration. Increased tin production in New South Wales since 1963 is a direct result of price rise and stabilization, and rise in the price of silver has revived an interest in silver prospecting in recent Years,

A resource rent taxation scheme is based on the concept of taxing the rent or surplus profit generated from primary industry activity. Rent has been defined as profits that remain after deduction of company income which corresponds to the minimum return necessary to attract private investment to a new project.Rent taxation schemes on the mining industry within the Australasian region have been examined and widely discussed during the decades of the 1970s and 1980s. Forms of resource rent taxation schemes have been imposed on Papua New Guinea mining, some sectors of Australian petroleum, the Roxby Downs venture and are being discussed for the New South Wales coal industry. While no introduced applications have been pure rent taxation schemes, the concept has generally come to encompass arrangements which tax rent at a partial rate which may or may not vary with the level of profitability or return.An examination is made of a number of the more recent schemes. Aspects which should be considered in implementation of new forms of this taxation are discussed. It is concluded that there is an increased acceptance for this form of taxation on the Australian mining industry.

This paper describes the oil engihe plant owned and operated by Gold Mines .of Kalgoorlie Limited, and gives some details of installation, operational, and maintenance experiences which have arisen during the years of service, the last 5 years of which have been under the writer's control. Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 alternator units have run 50,276, 48,006, 49,677 and 25,930 hours respectively, and much knowledge has been obtained of their performances and faults. During the war years, it has not been easy to obtain spare parts; this, coupled with the loss of No. 4: alternator unit to the Commonwealth Government, made operation and maintenance a very difficult problem.All engines are of the enclosed vertical, single acting, 4-stroke cycle, airless injection type.The electrical power plant originally consisted of four 6-cylinder Belliss & Morcom heavy oil engines, direct coupled to Bruce Peebles alternators, running at 375 r.p.m., and generating 3-phase electric power at 3,300 volts, 50 cycles.No. 1 unit, installed in 1936, is a 6-cylinder 450 b.h.p. standard 12A Belliss & Morcom heavy oil engine, direct coupled to 280 kw. 0.8 p.f. alternator. The remaining three units are 6-cylinder, 660 b.h.p., lSA oil cooled piston type Belliss & Morcom heavy oil engines, direct coupled to 410 kw. 0.8 p.f. alternators, making a total capacity of 1,510 kw.No. 4"alternator. unit, an 18A Bellis.& Morcom set, was taken over by the Commonwealth Government in June 1943.

This paper is an appraisal of the application of optical-mechanical-scanners operating in the non-photographic infrared wavelengths (3-5 and 8-14 micrometres) to mineral exploration in Australia. Pundamental principles of the operation of airborne scanners and their data output, thermal infrared (IR) imagery, are summarized. It is contended that thermal IR imagery often depicts the distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted from earth surface materials better than aerial photographic techniques because optical-mechanical-scanners sample wavebands which straddle the wavelength peak of earth surface emission. To illustrate the geological features which such scanners can depict, reference is made to thermal IR imagery of a number of areas in Australia where the technique has been applied for exploration purposes. Current problems in predicting sub-surface strata movement and fracture development due to longwall mining have highlighted the need for more accurate, dependable methods of physical modelling of rock mechanics problems which are beyond the capabilities of current mathematical techniques. Physical model studies of the caved zone above the working faces up to the base of a water source are of importance in attempting to understand changes in mass permeability due to induced fracture zones and the resulting ground water conditions. Turkey's most important supplies of coking coals are to be found within the hard coal resources of the Black Sea coast. Coal seams up to 9 metres thick, dipping at angles as steep as 90 degrees are being successfully mined at the Kozlu Mine. Since 1956, mining operations have been carried out under the sea in dry conditions. The undersea mining conditions of the Kozlu Mine have been investigated using scaled physical models constructed from artificial materials which satisfied necessary scaling requirements. Models representing the in-situ conditions were tested and the following extraction sequence was employed: 1. The Sulu Seam extraction 2. The Acilik Seam extraction (as two slices) 3. The Piric Seam extraction. The displacement of the fixed reference points were subsequently measured using a high precision photogrammetric technique and induced horizontal and vertical strains were calculated.

The Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) Initial System Project (ISP) - Underground Structures North, UGN, is the northern section of the blue line, which is the first stage of an underground mass transport rail system of 77 km to be implemented in the central area of Bangkok, Thailand. The UGN section (Huai Kwang - Bang Sue) consists of approximately 8 km of twin single track bored tunnels, nine underground stations and some short cut and cover tunnel sections. The paper focuses on the main issues involved in the structural design of the precast concrete lining, which is the definitive structural support of the bored tunnels. It includes an overview of the site and geotechnical conditions, specific properties of precast concrete linings, ground-structure modelling, approach for the assessment of load conditions and respective sectional forces and particulars of the detailing of the reinforcement and the segment testing program.

Kidston Gold Mine is a 3.5 million tonnes per year operation located 280 kilometres west of Townsville, Queensland. Kidston's ore body consists of 44.3 million tonnes graded at 1.79 grams per tonne gold and 2.22 grams per tonne silver. Full production commenced in March, 1985. During the remainder of 1985, Kidston milled 3.77 million tonnes of ore and produced 213,614 ounces of gold.The ore is comprised of granodiorite, polymictic and volcanic breccias. The degree of oxidation of the rock influences the milling capacity and therefore determines the cut-off grade; ore is categorised as oxide, transition and fresh. The milling rates are 15,400, 12,000 and 9,600 tonnes per day for oxide, transition and fresh ore respectively.The ore is treated in a conventional cyanidation/ carbon-in-pulp plant (CIP). The plant consists of a primary crusher, semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mills, leach circuit and carbon-in-pulp circuit. Carbon stripping and dore smelting are done on site. The major difference between the Kidston plant and other Australian CIP plants is that a cyclone separation and washing circuit rejects half of the dry tonnage as a sand tail prior to CIP treatment. This difference allows the CIP circuit at Ki.dston to be smaller and makes the CIP less sensitive to the grind circuit product size.
