Over the last ten years geological and mining software products have evolved greatly. Software companies developing such products have focussed almost exclusively on the development of technical aspects of the applications, addressing geological, ore reserve estimation and mine planning problems. These specialist applications, and the many other new technologies that are being developed by a myriad of niche developers, are an essential part of todayÆs hi-tech mining operations. Technology is also being used in many other areas to improve the mining process and there is no doubt that tremendous advances are being made in all these fields. Yet there is something missing. The manner in which the technologies are used and implemented has led to the creation of many independent and inefficient æislands of technologyÆ where a variety of products from different vendors are used to address different, but related problems. Problems occur with unreliable information, data duplication, data redundancy and transferring data between applications that may be incompatible or even run on different computer platforms. These problems impede the flow and availability of information and hamper day-to-day decision-making by mine management. A solution to this problem is to take a holistic view of all the various technical applications and incorporate them into a single information technology solution. This solution must encompass all of the information requirements of a mining operation and must provide facilities that address much of the modern thinking about mine management, including strategic mine planning, value management, key performance indicators, and maintenance of a mineral balance sheet. Gemcom is developing an Integrated Resource Asset Management System (IRAMS), which is an enterprise-wide integrated computer system that encompasses various applications typically found at a mining operation. The core component of the system is a common, open, industry standard database that can be shared by many users from each of the different departments at a mine. Around that central repository are the primary applications that provide the mine with information it needs to operate. Ensuring that the information is reliable, accurate, shareable, timely and consistent will eliminate many inefficiencies, and provide significant benefits to mining companies. In turn these benefits will lead to significant improvements in decision-making, productivity and profitability for the operation. The initial version of the IRAMS system is currently being implemented at the De Beers Venetia Mine in South Africa. The system is being built around a core repository using the Microsoft æBack OfficeÆ architecture, and incorporates key technical applications from Gemcom, Whittle, De Beers Technical Team, Wenco and JKTech. The benefits of enterprise-wide systems have long been recognised in the commercial arena and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as SAP, JD Edwards and MIMS are becoming commonplace in the mining industry. The more forward looking software developers and mining companies realise the need for efficient management of the information gathered during the mining process and can see that the concepts used in ERP systems apply equally to the technical applications as they did to commercial applications. The use of IT in the mining industry has expanded tremendously over the last five years as enabling technology and management acceptance has become more prevalent, and there is considerable room for dramatic growth over the next five years. The evolution of geological and mining software has now reached the stage where mines will yield the greatest returns by integrating the applications used in each area of their operations.

The European Union (EU) have recently issued new Threshold Limit Value-Time Weighted Average (TLV-TWA) for diesel exhaust contaminants, which are CO, NO2 and DPM. The new limits for CO and NO2 were issued in 2017 whilst the one for DPM was issued in 2019. However, in order to allow EU mines to formulate strategies to comply with these new limits, the EU granted a transition period in which mines could use the old limits until the new limits are enforced. The new limit for CO and NO2 will be enforced from 21 August 2023 whilst the one for DPM will be enforced from 21 February 2026. The new limit for NO2 and DPM is very low, 0.5 ppm for NO2 and 0.05 mg/m3 of Elemental Carbon (EC) for DPM. Combination of these two limits would be the lowest among all mining jurisdictions worldwide. It poses a huge compliance challenge to EU mines if they keep using diesel machines. Therefore, a study and a field trial were carried out by the author in 2019–2021 to investigate whether replacing diesel machines with Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) would be the best answer to this challenge. The problem of production scheduling is sufficiently complex to negate the use of many conventional optimising techniques as there are numerous and diverse factors that must be considered when trying to produce an optimal schedule. These factors include: grade distribution, orebody geometry, production rate capacity, processing constraints and market price of the minerals amongst a variety of others. In addition it may be observed that many of these factors incorporate a degree of uncertainty and any schedule produced must inevitably consider risk as a primary consideration. The very nature of the problem has limited the use of conventional optimisers. Genetic algorithms use methods based upon evolution and natural selection to produce `optimal' solutions to complex system problems. They are extremely flexible and robust in their nature and it is these characteristics that are important in this particular problem domain. A particular strength of the genetic optimisation approach is the ability to handle the multiple and non-linear constraints that are typically encountered in mine scheduling problems. This paper concentrates on the development of a prototype application of a genetic algorithm to the problem of scheduling the output from multiple production points in an underground mining operation. In particular it.describes a system (GO-SCHED) that can be customised to handle a wide variety of underground scheduling problems. GO-SCHED, a Windows-based system, can interface with a variety of databases and spreadsheets for data input and output and provides a simple intuitive approach to the solution of the scheduling problem.

The Racecourse Orebodies at Mount Isa consist of a series of parallel steeply dipping lead/zinc/silver orebodies with a strike length of up to 1000 metres. Production from these orebodies between 13 Level to 9 Level has been by a series of cut and fill stopes in two level stages, leaving a crown pillar at 11 level. Development of the 15 level to 13 level extraction stage has recently been completed. The layout consists of a series of parallel stopes over a strike length of 1200 metres. Access to the stopes is by two declines connecting the stopes with a series of crosscuts This paper describes the basic layout with development and production methods employed.

In the process of mining the lower seam in a multi-seam operation, a lot of oblique fract- ures appeared in the upper seam which was in the equilibrium zone. These fractures closed soon after the lower face line passed. Despite the occurrance of some degree of undulations, and and step-like unevenness, the upper seam was subsequently extracted without difficulty. When attempting multi-seam extraction, from the height of the equilibrium zone, the minimum distance between seams in ascending mining should be predicted. By analysing roof con- vergences data and the geometrical configuration of subsidence profile, it was found that the minimum safe distance for ascending multi-seam mining depends on the mining height of the lower seam and the properties and structure of the inter-stratified rocks.

This paper firstly examines the pollu- tion potential of burning colliery wastes. A comparison of two means of estimating the pro- pensity for coal to combust spontaneously is next presented. The use of microwaves, as a new procedure, is discussed in detail, while a comparison of the results is made with a modi- fied adiabatic technique. A number of coals that are known to combust spontaneously was tested, as were some coals that are not consi- dered to have self heating potential.

A multi-wire borehole instrumentation system was used to monitor strata movement caused by a retreating longwall face at the Ellalong Colliery, situated in the Lower Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Mechanical anchors were placed at various horizons in the borehole which extended from the surface to the extracted coal seam. The vertical movement of the anchors was monitored during mining. The zone of major disturbance was confined to 13 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam. The average dilation of strata in this zone was 6 per cent. Above the caving zone, the tensile strain was under 2mn/m except at one location, where it was `xmi/m. The subsidence trough under dynamic conditions was flatter than that under stationary conditions. The subsidence also depended upon the extent of strata fragmentation prior to undermining.

3D photogrammetry is a powerful tool for data capture and interpretation, utilised at all Australian underground MMG sites. In personnel constrained mines, 3D photogrammetry can free up personnel time, improve data quality for resource modelling, as well as benefit other mining departments.At Rosebery one of the challenges faced by geologists was no longer data capture but, rather, avoiding paralysis by analysis from the sheer abundance of information currently available to the department. Although the data had been interpreted, the structural model was cluttered; the geological block model was not incorporating any geological domains captured by 3D photogrammetry, nor was it being utilised by other departments such as geotechnical engineering.The geology department is now focusing on utilising all the interpreted data gained from each photograph heading into an uncluttered, easily understandable model for geologists and other mining departments.Our solutions involve integrating the Leapfrog modelling suite into the process, streamlining the structural model, tailoring the data interpretations for future updates of the block model and training other departments to improve utilisation of the interpreted data. This process also uncovered other benefits for near-mine exploration, and improving our understanding of the deposit’s origin.CITATION:Robertson, M, 2017. I've talked a number of times in the past year or so to audiences like today's about culture -about thinking of it, understanding it, respecting it. So, rather than talk just yet about your laws for mining on Aboriginal land and the successes some of us and some of you have been able to achieve, I'd like to first of all talk about cul- ture as I understand it. Anyone who proposes any kind of development on Aborigi- nal land needs to have some basic understanding of what we, the traditional owners of that land, are about. Without that under- standing, you will find difficulty in coming to terms with us. Many people have experienced this difficulty and, unless we can do something about it together, many more will continue to find it.

The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag, the main system formed in the Ruhrstahl-Heraeus (RH) vacuum degasser, was measured at 1873 K to understand the effect of slag compositions on the carbon contamination in the ultra-low carbon (ULC) steels. The stable form of carbon was demonstrated to be carbonate by plotting the log [(wt%C)/aC] ratio against the log p(O2) which ranged -11 < log p(O2,atm) < -9. The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be estimated using thermodynamic model. The distribution ratio of carbon increased with increasing concentration of FeO due to the FeO reduction reaction and increased basicity of slag. The carbonate capacity of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be expressed as a linear function of the activity of lime and the optical basicity.

This study presents the procedure of mine modelling and reserve evaluation by means of statistics, computer interpolation methods and aerophotography interpretation. All data are from Carbonifera Treviso, Laura Muller City, Santa Catarina State, southernmost Brazil. From 22 bore holes and nine trenches opened in the coal seam outcrops, a data base including level references and thickness of all rock formations was created.Using this information, basic statistic analysis was carried out, showing that there are three different populations (three modal distribution). These populations defined three geological blocks with different characteristics of overburden removal and mining methodology. This mathematical approach for analysing geological data is very important for correct mine planning and complementary prospection.

In an on-going study of the chemistry of base metal sulphide flotation, the effect of the inclusion of cyanide in the reagents suite has been studied, with special reference to ore from Pasminco Mining&apos;s Elura mine. Cyanide has been variously described as an iron sulphide depressant, a preventor of sphalerite activation and as an activator of galena. In the case described here, the cyanide appeared to act as an enhancer of the galena flotation performance, raising the lead recoveries by 25 per cent but leaving the sphalerite and pyrite responses unaffected. The lead rougher flotation performance with and without cyanide was investigated over a wide range of redox potentials (0 mV to 400 mV SHE). In all cases, the inclusion of the cyanide brought about an increase in the galena recovery and was responsible for a faster rate of galena flotation during the initial stages of the beneficiation. A surface characterisation study (XPS) of the lead flotation stage, with and without cyanide, indicated that the reagent interacted specifically with the galena and pyrite minerals. It was possible to correlate the surface absorption of the cyanide on the lead and iron sulphides with improvements to the flotation performance using the combination of surface spectroscopy and laboratory flotation Testwork.

The crushing and concentration of ores, as Herbert Hoover commented in a footnote in De Re Metallica, stretches back at least 6000 years. During those years there have been continuing changes and improvements in mineral processing technology. It has expanded greatly in its ability to handle different types of minerals, and lower grade and more complex ores. Australia will be dependent on the mineral industry for the fore- seeable future and there will be continuing demands on the mill opera- tors to improve the technology with regard to efficiency, flexibility and costs. These demands will be met successfully in the future as they have been in the past. This Mill Operators&apos; Conference is an important forum for assessing our present position and planning for the future.

The SMELT-2 package is specifically designed to perform on-line simulation of smelting processes. This paper describes its application to the simulation of continuous matte converting followed by reductive slag cleaning in SIROSMELT reactors. The matte, containing 50% Cu is assumed to be produced at the rate of 20 tph in a continuous matte smelting furnace such as an Outokumpu Flash Furnace, Noranda or Sirosmelt reactor. Two alternative fluxing strategies in the converter are examined, namely: ò conventional silicate slags, ò calcium ferrite slags, and the flow sheets associated with each strategy are discussed. A regular solution model is used in the present study to account for the variations in the activity coefficients of components in the slag.

Many changes have occurred in the world market for manganese over the last five years. Among these, the emergence of divided steel processes for the hot metal refining of pig iron is affecting the use of both ferruginous manganese ore and ferro manganese, at this stage particularly in the Japanese steel industry. Subsequent demand for higher quality manganese materials is promoting the use of thermally beneficiated products such as sinter. In addition, many processes are being developed for the direct smelting of fine manganese ores, of which plasma technology is the most advanced. Cost pressures and product quality requirements are encouraging pre- viously self sufficient countries such as The People&apos;s Republic of China and the USSR to import high grade manganese ores to supplement indigenous lower quality supplies. At the same time, Brazil has been provided with the impetus to convert its substantial reserves of ore to value added products.

The discovery of bauxite in 1955 at Weipa on the NW coast of Queensland&apos;s Cape York Pen- insula enabled Australia to join the Caribbean and West Africa as one of the major world sources of bauxite. Weipa, today, is the largest bauxite mining operation in the world and holds a significant position on the world bauxite scene as the operation 1. supplies 15 per cent of the Western World&apos;s metallurgical grade bauxite requirements, Z. produces 50 per cent of the world&apos;s demand for abrasive grade calcined bauxite, and 3. is the world&apos;s largest bauxite shipp ing port.

Simple quotation of quantities of coal reserves neglects the relationship between qualities of coals and their efficient use. If exploitation of a deposit is contemplated, its life expectancy can be deduced only if its reserves are estimated according to the coal user&apos;s technological standards. A wide range in properties will satisfy a steaming coal, whereas a high vitrinite high rank coal would be preferred for coking and a low inertinite low rank coal for conversion. In competitive trading the buyer&apos;s commercial specification may require weighing against the producer&apos;s practical ideals, especially when beneficiation is critical. Differentiation of grades in quality of a deposit provides an intelligent understanding of the economic importance of the deposit. The Wongawilli seam of the New South Wales Southern Coalfield exemplifies the effect of quality criteria upon the extent of in situ, recoverable and marketable classes of economic reserves. Effective management of a deposit will result from simultaneous quotation of coal qualities and quantities in a statement of its reserves.

The Lady Loretta lead-zinc-silver mineral isation of north-west Queensland was discovered first by Placer geologists in 1968 as a result of a geochemical soil survey. The stratigraphic position, mineralisation and rock associations of the deposit are very similar to those of the Mount Isa lead-zinc-silver orebodies. Aspects of the exploration history, geo- chemistry and structural geology of the Lady Loretta deposit, are discussed. A geometric model of the Ore Horizon is given.

The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. An outline of the project and the geology of the mineralised structures follows:
