Personal risk assessment processes, also known as Take 5 or SLAM (Stop, Look, Assess, Manage) have been utilised in high hazard industries for over 30 years. However, there is limited research to understand if a personal risk assessment process improves safety and health outcomes. The author’s learnings during discussions with training participants in G3/G-MIRM (Risk Management Systems) and G2 (Risk Assessment for Supervisors) courses have provided them with significant insight into understanding if a personal risk assessment process is valued across a number of mining industry organisations. These discussions arise when the four-layer model is presented (Figure 1) where ‘Layer 4’ represents the last resort risk checking activity. In this context, training participants agree that this process has value. However, the consistent opinion is that the personal risk assessment process is not effective, that it is a ‘tick and flick exercise’ and is not achieving the desired outcomes.

Coal development in New South Wales can involve a complex series of government approvals, a requirement that results from the coincidence of many development sites with environmentally sensitive areas. The concept of network analysis is applied to the pre- development regulatory procedures leading up to the grant of a coal lease. The network facilitates a quantitative and qualitative analysis of activity schedules relating to pre- requisite statutory approvals. The sequencing of activities (with clear start and finish nodes, identification of sensitivities and time estimates for completion of each phase of the network) provides government and industry with an effective planning tool.

This paper discusses cone penetration test correlations for loose gold tailings that were developed within a critical state soil mechanics framework. The development of a new calibration chamber for cone penetration testing that consists of a modified triaxial cell is described. Some of the early development and commissioning issues that were encountered, as well as the solutions adopted are outlined, including the system to prepare the samples and to acquire high-quality data from the testing. Also, the triaxial laboratory testing required to achieve the critical state line is described, including some of the basic precautions considered necessary as good practice. Additionally, the system adopted for volume tracking of the calibration chamber sample is described, which is essential for ensuring a reliable state parameter comparison against the acquired cone penetration test data. Finally, some laboratory test data from the calibration chamber is plotted against the soil behaviour type charts currently available from various authors.

"*This is an abstract only* Geometallurgical initiatives have demonstrated considerable value to operations that have trialled them. However, it is extremely difficult for these initiatives to become properly embedded into the operations and for that value to be realised on an ongoing basis.This paper will explore some of the historical reasons why this is the case. Some of these reasons include the limited tools available to manage an integrated operation. Given the ongoing global crises of climate change and nature loss, with the World Economic Forum (WEF) identifying them as the top risks to global economies in terms of both likelihood and impact in the coming ten years (WEF, 2022), there is increasing, pressing demand for companies to demonstrate they understand their climate and nature related risks and look toward contributing genuine beneficial environmental outcomes. Within the mining industry, mine closure is the obvious field in which climate and nature positive strategy can be linked with operations. To do so, there is a need to challenge long-held assumptions around closure in the mining and regulatory context; particularly, to shift the focus from closing individual mines to considering regional opportunity generation and value creation.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Telfer operation comprises both open pit and underground operations producing gold and copper. The underground operation is made up of three production areas, the sublevel cave (SLC), M Reefs narrow vein open stoping and Western longhole open stoping areas. With stoping situated on the abutments of a mature and active sublevel cave, the interaction between mining areas is often complex. This is particularly evident in the M Reefs orebodies with high levels of extraction in all four reefs, and reliance on pillars to maintain local and global stability. A key concern was the potential for a cascading pillar failure to develop and rapidly progress through the M Reefs stoping area. The monitoring plan needed to capture any change in overall stability and identify if deformation was caused by pillar failure within the M Reefs and hanging wall closure, or shear on the reefs caused by SLC influence.

Understanding watercourses and river processes at a landscape scale is vital for managing risk to mining infrastructure and operations as well as minimising future environmental impacts beyond the life of the mine. Recognising this, Iluka Resources Limited engaged Alluvium Consulting Australia to identify and characterise watercourses across several neighbouring mineral tenements in the Eucla Basin, South Australia (Alluvium, 2013, 2014a, 2014b). The objective of the studies was to inform planning for risk management during mine planning and operation and appropriate landscape rehabilitation for mine closure.Mining operations in the area are by open cut extraction of mineral sands. The extracted resource is processed on-site before leaving the site for export. Several pits are to be developed in stages with simultaneous backfilling and surface reinstatement. Mining is initially taking place in the Jacinth tenement, where up to 100 km of watercourses may be directly or indirectly impacted (refer to Figure 1).The total study area (shown in Figure 1) is approximately 330 km2 and spans three smaller areas that were the focus of separate investigations during mine planning.CITATION:Ferguson, C, White, K, Harding, M and Hardie, R, 2016. A shift in the present day oil exploration scenario from West Coast can be foreseen keeping in mind peak of exploration in Cambay Basin and fast pace of development in Bombay High and its associated fields by the end of this century. Shifts in exploration from structural traps to stratigraphic traps, techno- logical development to drill in deep waters, improving economic situation for oil ventures and proven oil and gas potential of East Coast basins suggest that Indian oil explorat- ion scene will be at its peak along east coast during early 21st century. Hydrocarbon shows in Poonch and Jawalamukhi in Punjab Basin, improvements in drilling to greater depths, better seismic data aquisition, good source rock potential of Subathus and its equivalents and large geologi- cally mapped structures will reopen new avenues for explorationists. Not much exploration effort has been put up so far in Ganga Basin. Keeping in mind size of the basin, sedimentary thickness involved, presence of algal matter deposited in shallow marine environment & higher hydrocarbon indications warrant active exploration. Gondwanas in India having such a large sedimentary area can not be ignored keeping in view generation and production from the non marine sediments of Kenya, Chad, Sudan, Gadon and China. Gondwanas become all the more important in view of gas production from their equivalents-Karoos in Ethiopia and South Africa. In all, above mentioned changes can be predicted in Indian oil exploration scenario during 21st century.

A series of tests on rock stress measurement devices used with the overcoring method indicated that improvements could be made in their construction. A prototype inclusion cell was developed with strain gauge rosettes bonded to a 0.05 mm thickness stainless steel sheet which was formed into a cylinder around two end pieces. The finished diameter was slightly larger than previous cells so that the thinner plate and the reduced annulus of Araldite cement in the installation borehole gave a better response in the laboratory than the other cells tested, especially in simulated bedded rock. It was less affected by inhomogeneity and temperature changes. Its high sensitivity should make it suitable for both absolute stress measurement and field monitoring. A table of comparative readings is given for the new cell and for four other devices used in simulated in-situ rock conditions.

With the recent rapid development of Chinese steel industry, the world iron ore resources of good quality are depleting rapidly. As a result, iron ore deposits of lower quality have been or are being developed to meet the market demand and are becoming increasingly important to iron and steel companies. As concentrates have advantages of high Fe grade and less harmful impurities, they are ideal sweeteners to maintain sinter grade and quality when high proportions of low-grade ores are used in the sinter blends. However, due to their fine nature, addition of concentrates will inevitably increase the proportion of adhering fines and reduced the proportion of nucleus particles of the sinter blends, which can adversely affect the green bed permeability and sintering productivity. In the present study, lab scale sintering tests were carried out under the conditions similar to the sintering process to examine the effect of concentrates on the high temperature sintering characteristics of sinter blends and the structure and strength of the resultant sinter analogues.

Reducing metal prices have forced mining operations to become more efficient and innovate in order to do more with the existing base. Much of this effort has focused on improving the efficiency of load and haul operations. The key to this is to understand and quantify where delays and missed opportunities exist. Metrics such as utilisation of availability, efficiency utilisation and asset availability are helpful indicators of performance; however, uptime-based time usage models and performance analysis tools using productive operating time models help to identify additional improvement opportunities.Phu Kham is a copper-gold mine operated in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos) since 2008 by PanAust Limited. The mine is a single large open pit of 450 m depth, running a fleet of 51 100 t class rigid dump trucks and 300 t and 200 t shovels controlled with the aid of a fleet management system in order to achieve ex-pit material movements of 56 Mt/a.Commencing in late 2014, a range of initiatives were implemented in order to improve the efficiency of the mine haulage fleet. These include hot seating of all operator changeouts via changeout ramps, split shifting of crews to minimise queuing delays, maximising blast volumes and minimising blast event days to reduce blast exclusion delay events including opportune refuelling of equipment during blasting events, inspections of trucks during refuelling events, implementation of a dedicated haul road services team to help reduce wet weather related delays and infrastructure development for haul path efficiency improvements.These and other initiatives have allowed the mine haulage fleet utilisation of availability (UofA) to be sustainably increased from 85 per cent to 97 per cent (see Figure 1), efficiency utilisation to increase from 85 per cent to 90 per cent, and productive operating time (POT) to increase from 73 per cent to 84 per cent. The corresponding increases in efficiency of the haulage fleet has allowed an equivalent reduction of eight haul trucks from the fleet to meet continuing life-of-mine production requirements.CITATION:Monro, K R and Young, S P, 2016. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Mineral exploration and mining are challenging businesses. Remote and at times harsh conditions have always made it difficult for exploration, but modern explorers also have to deal with cover, numerous technologies, an explosion of data and critical early community engagement. Mining deals with the reality of moving and breaking thousands of tonnes of rock each day to extract what can be a very minor component of economic value, and, furthermore, society expects that this will be done in a clean and sustainable manner. The exploration and mining challenges appear disparate, but they are intimately related.Although not widely appreciated, both exploration and mining have a long tradition of innovation. Over the last 50 years, major step changes in exploration have resulted from radical advances in our understanding of ore forming processes, new geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing technologies, and new ways to integrate and interrogate data. Over a more extended period, close to 100 years, mining has developed bulk surface and underground methods, selective extraction through flotation and leaching and global positioning system–geographic information system control systems that collectively facilitate mining at a massive scale. And yet, in spite of these successes and the boom that we have enjoyed in the last ten years, the industry is under pressure and the need for innovation and change is paramount.The major drivers for innovation are the need for increased quality in discoveries and mines and the need to interact effectively with communities and jurisdictions such that the benefits of quality mines are recognised and enjoyed widely.We are still making new discoveries around the Pacific Rim and elsewhere, but many argue that the quality – grade and accessibility – of these discoveries is decreasing. The net result is that explorers are delivering resources and reserves for development at lower grades and with higher capital and operating costs than current operations. For mining, the increasing age of many existing operations contributes to increasing costs, which, when combined with decreasing cut-offs and lower grades, also results in declining quality. The combined picture does not look good.Just as the pressure to improve performance and margins in the face of declining inputs increases, we are simultaneously faced with increasing societal demands for improved environmental performance and sustainable practices. This is most apparent at the local, community level, where opposition ultimately leads to delays or even cancellation of new projects. The mineral pulp as it passes through grinding-classification, flotation and solid-liquid separation is examined in the context of it being a particulate fluid. By focussing on the complex viscosity and yield stress of the fluid, new control strategies are discussed. The mineral-particulate fluid is dominatred by non-Newtonian rheology (ie shear thinning, shear thickening, shear yield stress and compressive yield strength). The control of this Theology is seen to be dependent on the fundamental practice-particle interaction forces and with adequate information, it is possible to use the complex shear properties to advantage. The advantages, in terms of final waste and concentrate management, to high weight per cent solids in the mineral particulate fluid, are explored and control strategies outlined.

In coal preparation, large dense medium cyclones (DMC) at low pressure heads (typically 9D where D = cyclone diameter) are the norm. This contrasts with high density mineral applications where, largely for historical reasons, smaller cyclones at high heads are the standard. There are advantages in preferring large diameter cyclones at low heads, assuming that metallurgical performance does not suffer significantly. These include simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, reduced medium pumping demands, smaller buildings and overall lower capital and operating costs. In 2008, therefore, Xstrata Zinc decided to trial a single DSM-design 800 mm cyclone in one of its four DMC lines at Mt Isa, replacing the four 400 mm cyclones previously installed. Circumstances allowed a low head of 9.5 D to be trialled, compared with the existing 400 mm head of 21.5 D. This paper describes the trial, including tests using painted ore particles as tracers, estimates of yield and metal recovery, and wear monitoring. The larger unit performed well. There was no evidence that metallurgical performance in terms of metal recovery and waste reject rate suffered, and there was some evidence that it may have improved. Cyclone life increased, and preliminary data suggest that the replacement cost of the 800 mm cyclones is less than half that of the 400 mm units, and this is expected to improve. The plant layout and operability have also improved significantly. Xstrata has therefore decided to convert the whole plant to four low head 800 mm units, replacing the original 16 high head 400 mm units. The paper includes an explanation of the effect of static head on DMC separating force. It also reviews earlier research on diamond applications, and applies a general DMC process model to the Xstrata case, both of which confirm that large, low head cyclones are appropriate in mineral applications, contrary to conventional practice. Such units could significantly reduce both the capital and operating costs of DMC plants in mineral applications.

Glencore Coal Assets Australia (GCAA) operates five coalmines in Queensland and has rehabilitated thousands of hectares of mined land across these sites. Accordingly, GCAA seeks to continually improve rehabilitation outcomes over time and work towards progressive rehabilitation sign-off. The ultimate test of rehabilitation success is the attainment of an agreed land-use target, whether for biodiversity conservation or some type of agricultural production, and the ability of the rehabilitated landscape to resist degradation and retain desired functions (eg biodiversity protection or grazing productivity). However, success must be based on documented evidence that can demonstrate adequate progress towards rehabilitation targets and is assessed at appropriate intervals. To assist this task, a stepwise decision guide for the GCAA monitoring program was developed to ensure consistent monitoring data is collected across the range of sites. This presentation will discuss some of the processes that were followed to allow GCAA to identify appropriate metrics to assess rehabilitation success efficiently over thousands of hectares.CITATION:Erskine, P, Fletcher, A and Swart, P, 2016. Any engineering firm hoping to do business in the modern world must understand-and take into account-the social and economic realities of client, country, culture, and community. If these considerations are ignored, any large-scale international development project is doomed to failure even before it begins. In this changing world, the distinctions between `developed', `developing', and `less developed' nations are more and more blurred. The so-called `less-developed' and `developing' nations are rapidly acquiring technology, an educated man- agerial and technical class, manufacturing capa- bilities, a growing spectrum of developed financial and raw materials resources, and a broad range of labour skills. These nations are establishing themselves as an integral part of the modern world, on an equal footing with other nations and with justifiable expectations for an ever higher standard of living and an ever better quality of Life.

The results of iron ore exploration in Western Australia between '1961 and 1964 are outlined, with particular.reference to the Hamersley Iron Province. Exploration during: these three years has increased the known resources of the-,Statle from 275 million tons to almost 9,000 million tons of high- grade hematite ore. Design of the new cemented hydraulic fill plant was based mainly on experience with a succession of previous fill plants. Two stage cycloning of combined concentrator tailings was introduced. Design of the two stage cyclone configuration was assisted by computer simulation of cyclone performance. Cementing additives, namely Portland cement and ground copper reverberatory furnace slag, drawn from bulk storage, are pre-slurried prior to mixing with hydraulic fill. Quality control of fill being sent under- ground is achieved by a series of automatic control loops. Plant instrumentation was given prime consideration during the design phase. Inventory checks of all mass flow metering equipment are made at regular intervals. Fill is pumped to boreholes at several locations. Details of the equipment and operating procedures for the plant are Discussed.

The conventional transportation system in open pit, a to u.* itc:,~> truck., to carry the ore along the ramps. Normally, the transportation distance increases greatly as mining progresses deeper. A new approach to overcome the above disadvantage is to adopt a buried roadway by which ores is transported by conveyors from the mining area to the outside dump in the shortest distance so that the production efficiency is greatly increased. Maintenance of the buried roadway in a good working condition is the key factor that determines the success or failure of the proposed approach. This includes the determination of support load, types and structures of support and other related supporting measures. The crucial problem here is to effectively control the load applied on the buried roadway in a certain range that the ordinary support can stand. Based on the theoretical analysis, numerical modelling and physical simulation testing using equivalent material, this paper studies effects on control of the support load by adopting certain measures, for instance reinforcing the surrounding rock and placing the extendable layer between the support and a rock mass. Furthermore, the influence of the dynamic load induced by the movement of heavy vehicles on the stability of the buried roadway is also investigated.
