Computer controlled truck dispatching systems is a newly-developed technical system in surface mines with shovel-truck technology. The real time dispatching criteria, as the core of optimal truck dispatching software, are analysed and a new criterion, complex dispatching criterion, is put forward. Dispatching criteria previously proposed include: 1. `Earliest Loading' (EL) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck can be loaded earliest. 2. `Max Truck' (MT) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck will have the shortest waiting time. 3. `Max Shovel' (MS) - to assign a truck to the shovel which has been waiting for the longest time. 4. `Minimum Saturation Degree' (MSD) - to assign a truck to the shovel at the branch where the truck flow saturation degree is minimum. 5. `Minimum Saturation Degree with Truck Cycle time consideration' (MSDTC) - as the MSD principle, with the truck travel cycle also considered. 6. `Fixed Dispatching' (FIX) - to assign trucks to fixed shovels. A system simulation model has been set up for truck dispatching system analysis. A few surface coal mines have been selected for case studies. Equipment waiting times and shift production of the system are obtained as the main outputs of the model. Simulation results show that each dispatching criterion has its own applicable range, no one can absolutely dominate the others. For example, when under-trucked, EL and MT criterion can obtain higher production than the MS criterion; when over-trucked, it is vice versa; while for MSD criteria, better results can be obtained no matter how the truck numbers fluctuate. From the view point of shovel output balance, large fluctuations occur for EL and MT criteria, while a good balance can be obtained for other criteria. In the light of dynamic change of mining system conditions, a single dispatching criterion is not necessarily reasonable. A complex dispatching criterion has been put forward to seek the complex optimum effect. Taking the advantage of each dispatching criteria, the dispatching result of a complex dispatching criterion dominates over individual dispatching criterion and a comprehensive optimum effect can be reached.

Obtaining correct assays for gold determinations relies on the correct methods being chosen and the assayer being made aware of the mineralogy of the sample and its general origin. Usually when a geologist or metallurgist obtains "incorrect" gold assays the problem can be traced to poor communication between the geologist or metallurgist and the assayer.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as Zone C, is a measured 440,000t @ 17g/t Au and 46g/t Ag with an additional indicated resource of 120,000t @ 16g/t Au. A diatreme breccia localised at an intersection of structures, and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are highly indicative of a porphyry association. Typical epi-thermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing. platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineral-isation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralising fluids were sourced from the diatreme margins and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting. Potential for more ore remains within the Gufinis and the 120 veins as well as in the outlying Prospects.

Present capacity for molten iron production at Port Kembla is an average of 13 000 t/day from five blast furnaces. The most recently installed blast furnace, No.5, was commissioned in March 1972 with a design capacity of 4 500 t/day. For the first reline currently scheduled for 1977, plans are being finalized.for significant modifications and uprating of capacity. Achievement of the initial design capacity from No.5 blast furnace on a sustained basis was not realised until the third year of operation. Although the furnace is only 42% larger than No.4 blast furnace on an inner volume basis, the more stringent raw materials, operation and maintenance requirements of the larger furnace and more complex equipment have been found to be much more critical than anticipated in the planning stages. These problems have also been experienced by many other companies who have recently installed large new blast furnaces. Some of the principal problem areas are described together with measures taken to over- come the difficulties. There are two discrete aspects to collecting portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) data to obtain reliable results and to comply with reporting requirements under the 2012 edition of the JORC Code (JORC, 2012) – sampling method and quality assurance. A robust sampling program is required to obtain representative material for analysis. The appropriate method should be established for a particular project using a small orientation study. A variety of approaches to sampling soils, drill cuttings, rock faces and diamond drill core are discussed. These include using multiple spot analyses, scanning using a single operating beam and the collection of cutting saw pulps. The operator must also be aware of the attenuating effects of analysing through sample bags of different material types for various elements as well as the limitations of current pXRF instruments in reporting reliable data for certain elements. The analysis of the samples must also be accompanied by a quality assurance program in order to generate data that are ‘fit for purpose’. This includes recording X-ray tube resolution on a routine basis, using matrix-appropriate standards for which total elemental concentrations are available, using silica blanks, capturing sufficient duplicate analyses to constrain data precision and obtaining check assays to calibrate pXRF data against laboratory data. Examples of quality control approaches and data are presented. Table 1 of the 2012 JORC Code also recommends that information on instrument make and model, reading times and calibration be provided in any reporting of pXRF data. To this should be added information on operating mode and temperature, software version and moisture content of the samples. A robust sampling methodology with a suitable quality assurance/quality control program should produce pXRF data of sufficient quality for public reporting purposes, provided that the data are presented using appropriate cautionary language and adequate supporting information.CITATION:Arne, D C and Jeffress, G M, 2014. High temperatures and pressures are required to obtain acceptable stripping rates. Higher chemically induced stripping rates could reduce the need for higher temperatures which lead to cyanide losses. The higher rates could lead to lower carbon inventories and higher gold production. This paper reports laboratory and continuous test unit data which strongly suggest that the preceding can be achieved. New stripping agents demonstrate efficient stripping under conditions of cyanide depletion such as after carbon acid washing. Stripping times for gold and silver can be reduced by at least half compared to caustic cyanide through the use of these novel substances.

Historically BHP Billiton Alliance Coal Operations Pty Ltd (BMA) have generated resource models from widely spaced data points (drill holes). The accuracy of these models has been influenced by the degree of local structural disturbance of the coal seams and by the choice of interpolators used in the modelling process. In some circumstances unacceptable vertical errors of up to 10 m have been observed whilst mining. New terrestrial photogrammetry or laser imaging technology now allow the 150 or so kilometres of exposed highwalls in BMA to be rapidly, accurately and safely mapped and the three-dimensional images economically incorporated into resource models, reconciliation grade control models, drill and blast designs and for pit stability analysis.

In the technical sense, as well as in the professional sense, the word 'model' can have many meanings. More than 23 000 references were uncovered by a simple literature search on keywords ' MO D EL#. and. (META LLURG#. or. M I NERAL#)' . For the purpose of this paper, 'models' will be considered to be mathematical formulations which attempt to represent or approximate a process. The model may be purely, or a combination of: ò fundamental models, based on the laws of physics, chemistry and thermodynamics; ò semi-empirical or phenomenological models, where an intuitive concept of the process is formulated and found by testwork to fit observed behaviour; and ò empirical or 'black-box' models (including neural networks), where a mathematically convenient form is proposed and fitted. Even under this more restricted definition, which eliminates heuristic and statistical 'models', it is clear that the efforts expended in devising and using models have exploded during the years since the first APCOM Conference in 1961, benefiting from the dramatic decrease in the cost of computer power. This paper reviews the areas of usage of computer modelling in the metallurgical and mineral processing industries, from plant design, through off-line support, to on-line modelling and automatic control. In each area, frontiers of new development of the technology are mentioned. It is noted that, while modelling is now standard practice in design, it is not yet the norm in operating and controlling plants. The reasons for this partial acceptance are, it is argued, less related to the limitations of the technology than to the human and organisational factors involved in transferring technology to implementation.

Linear interpolation of geo-related variables is important to different aspects of mining engineering such as long and short-term mine planning. The ore deposit description attained from spatial modeling of blast hole datasets has been widely taken into account, particularly, for short-term mine design and grade control, so as to define the ultimate destination of a mined block. It is approved in practice that making the wrong decision leads to losing a huge amount of money for choosing the destination of a mined block. In the case of complex ore deposits, the issue of estimation of variables in the region is questionable and somehow tedious. Due to this fact, modeling those complications in the co-spatial behavior of the grades in multi-element deposits prompts one to employ enhanced geostatistical techniques. Traditional approaches of this purpose such as polygon, inverse distance weighted and even (co)-kriging approaches, are incapable of reproducing those complexities such as non-linearity, heteroscedasticity and geological constraint that frequently exist among the variables of interest in those deposits. Another difficulty in employing those linear interpolations in grade estimation is smoothing effect, in which the estimated grades are over and under estimated. Now that Japan has achieved a remarkable high growth and joined the ranks of economic powers, she is required to take a stance proper to her new position toward international co- operation among Western advanced countries, economic/technical aids to Southeast Asian and Pacific LDCs, and others. As a field subject to such international cooperation programs, the development/use of coal resources has been winning increasing attention in recent years. Coal is positioned as one of promising alternative energies. With Southeast Asia plus Japan and the EEC serving as the two nucleus polar regions, total coal demand in the free world is projected to jump 37% in the year 2000 from the present level and steaming coal imports in the world, primarily destined for power generation, almost double the 1983 level. Such being the situations, Japan's tech- nologies related to coal resource development, if successfully introduced into coal-producing countries to help them boost their production, can directly lead to international cooperation that Japan is now required to fulfill. At home, however, the Japanese coal industry has been just on the wane due to various press- ing problems, such as wider differentials between overseas and domestic coal and deeper/ remorter mining. The industry was named atop in a list of the industries requiring restruct- uring at a meeting of the Economic Structure Study Committee held prior to the decision- making of the 8th coal policy, which slashed coal production planned for the last fiscal year of its life to some 10 million tons, a drop of as much as 50% from nominal output planned in the 7th policy. Under such circumstances at home and abroad, a pioneer study has been under way since fiscal 1984 as part of Japan's energy cooperation in the Pacific. The study is based on the Pacific coal flow concept hammered out by the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy of the MITI.

Surface subsidence caused by coal mining operations was the subject of a very successful symposium organised by the Illawarra Branch of the Australas- ian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in February, 1973. This symposium dealt with the principles of subsidence and overseas experiences arising out of underground mining. Since that time the i eew South Wales Department of Mineral Resources and Development (formerly the Depart- ment of Mines) has incorporated in the approval for pillar extraction certain conditions related to the monitoring of surface movement. Surveys and plans are required to be kept at mines where total or partial extraction of coal takes place. This paper traces the monitoring of surface movement in the Northern Coalfields of New South Wales over the past ten years. Reference is made to the National Coal Board's Subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) and how the guidelines expressed therein have been Beneficial.

The present study investigates the possibility of the direct removal of oxygen from the Ti-30Ni (wt per cent) alloy melt through the thermodynamic equilibrium reactions at 1623 K in the vertical tube furnace. The deoxidation efficiency of Ti-Ni alloy melt by adding different contents of metallic calcium (Ca) as a deoxidant was evaluated with the binary CaF2-MgCl2 flux. The thermodynamic equilibrium experiments showed that the total oxygen content in the alloy decreased from about 650 ppm to 350 ppm when 3.5 wt per cent Ca was added to the Ti-30Ni (wt per cent) alloy. Alternatively, the effect of flux composition in the CaF2-MgCl2 flux on the oxygen content was also investigated at 1623 K. Therefore, the effect of binary flux systems on the deoxidation ability was compared at 1623 K. According to the results, the flux system with 80 per centCaF2– 20 per centMgCl2 exhibited the best deoxidation capability, ie total oxygen content in the alloy reduced from 1450 to 550 ppm.

Questions of sampling precision and accuracy affect every process plant in differing ways and to differing extents. To address these perceived issues, chemists, metallurgists and engineers are often asked to check their results to confirm their reliability. However, it is not possible to achieve the level of detail required to check every sample, especially if the event has already occurred. No operation has the resources to frequently sample every point in the process for the purpose of verification.One way to address this scenario is by generating a sufficiently detailed comparative data set from a dynamic mass balance simulation of the processing plant. This mass balance uses both sample and plant instrument data to model every flow, while also taking inventory changes and process chemistry into account.The mass balance data can be used to identify any bias present in plant sampling and analysis. It can also be used to verify any unexpected assay results by taking a holistic view of the process. Improving the precision and accuracy of sampling data helps support operational decision-?making and understanding. In 1972, with the West Lyell Open Pit winding down, mining operations transferred underground. All development tunnelling until the end of the decade was carried out by a fleet of ten pneumatic Jumbos.A decision was made in 1980 to purchase an electric-hydraulic Jumbo and a second was purchased in 1982. Their introduction changed the face of development at Mount Lyell. Significant new demands were placed on main-tenance sections, particularly on electrical reticulation.Subsequently, two further electric-hydraulic Jumbos were purchased from Agnew Mining in 1984, and successfully overhauled and commissioned. As well, two electric-nydraulic production drilling rigs have been purchased. Only one of the original pneumatic Jumbos remains in service.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

Ballarat Goldfields NL is developing an exploration decline at Ballarat East using a Mitsui Miike S-125 roadheader. To-date, 530 in of advance has been achieved at an average rate of 16.1 m/week. Roadheader availability has averaged 94.3 per cent, and pick consumption has averaged 0.016 per m. Ground support has involved pattern rockbolting with split sets, 100 mm thick fibre reinforced shotcrete, and steel sets as required. The slower than expected advance rate has mainly been due to difficult ground conditions. It is expected that a further 970 in of decline will be mechanically excavated before a drill and blast system becomes more economical.

Good roads are essential in moving men and materials to and from the underground workplace. Coffey Partners International Pty Ltd (Coffey) has recently completed a underground coal industry funded project on underground mine road construction and maintenance. This paper discusses practical approaches to construction and maintenance of underground mine roads using transferrable civil technologies and innovative techniques. Mine pavements are generally low-cost (relative to civil roads), constructed to varying standards using locally available materials to best meet the mobility needs of the mine. Performance of pavements is thus largely dependent on the environmental conditions, quality of the available road making materials, maintenance policies and available resources. The paper will detail `what causes bad roads?' in various underground environments, available management strategies, construction and water control techniques, road maintenance and vehicle considerations.

A new experimental procedure for determining the solids flux curve is detailed. The procedure is based on measuring the concentration at various heights of a bed of settled solids formed during a semi-continuous sedimentation test. Unlike conventional thickener area calculations, the test procedure demonstrates the dependence of the flux curve on the system feed flux. At a given feed flux, there was good agreement between the solids flux curve determined by the method and continuous sedimentation results. The widely used method of Kynch was found to be restricted to relatively high effective feed fluxes and consequently there was poor agreement with continuous tests at low feed fluxes. The flux curve determined by the method of Coe and Clevenger was invalid for all feed fluxes. A case study shows how the required thickener area would vary for a number of fine coal processing options.

The Pasminco mine at Rosebery in north western Tasmania is a medium sized underground base and precious metals mine. In April 1992 a major wedge failure of approximately 5000 t occurred in the backs of a main access drive to the 18 level H Lens orebody. This collapse prevented access to 190 000 t of ore which had been scheduled for production in July - August 1992. At the time of the collapse, the mine was in a transition period between mining small pillar remnants of several other orebodies and developing to the new deeper J Lens orebody.The development at this orebody was behind schedule and it was necessary to find a cost-effective and timely alternative to a 75 m bypass drive around the fall area.A Lysaght- Fletcher multiplate steel arch was available on-site from a deferred surface road project and it was decided to use this arch to regain access through the fall area. Due to the danger of continued minor falls, the entire 18 m long, 3.95 m high x 4.5 m wide tunnel had to be assembled in the 4.7 m wide x 5 m high accesss drive and pushed into the fall area as a single unit.

Past experience with fully bonded cable dowels placed as a means of reinforcement in highly stressed crop pillars at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mine indicated such support was not fully effective. Typically overbreak of the crown occurred leaving long lengths of cables hanging from the back stripped of grout and rock with the potential load carrying capacity of the cables not having been fully utilised. This mode of behaviour had been observed in the cable dowelled crowns of three longhole open stopes (EROS) mined to the No. 12 level at NBHC. A system of support with improved mechanism of load transfer from rock to cable and capable of full utilisation of cable strength was proposed for the crown pillars of future Stopes.
