West Wallsend No. 2 Colliery is a new mine that is presently being developed in the New- castle Coalfield by J. & A. Brown & Abermain Seaham Collieries Ltd., a subsidiary of Coal & Allied Industries Ltd. It is situated near Barnsley and is some 15 miles by rail from the port of Newcastle. The mine will produce coal from both Bore- hole and Young Wallsend seams. The Borehole seam has a working seam thickness varying from 7 ft to 5 ft while the Young Wallsend seam presents a choice of two distinct working thick- nesses, i.e. 5 ft. or 8 ft, the upper 3 ft containing much high ash material. The inter- seam interval varies from 10 ft on the western edge of the area to more than 70 ft in the central portion. The Borehole seam lies at a depth varying from 550 ft to 750 ft and the overlying surface terrain is gently undulating bushland with limited surface development.

A two-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear program is formulated for a mining complex to optimise strategic and tactical plans. The objective is to find the near optimal decisions for a mineral supply chain in the context with uncertainties in both ore supply and the commodity market (price and demand). The endogenous spot price in the commodity market and long-term sales contracts are considered in the formulation of the mining complex’s optimisation model and an ad hoc heuristic is developed to deal with the throughput – and head-grade-dependent recovery rate in processing plants. Numerical results indicate that the proposed heuristic is effective and efficient in numerical tests. Based on the proposed model and heuristic, a long-term contract design strategy is proposed for making decisions on the contract price and strategic investments. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal deposits that have different gangue mineralogies and ore shoot geometries are recognised. One has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a significant vertical interval that consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, minor base metal sulphides and adularia, with electrum. The other type of deposit has discrete near-vertical ore shoots of a lesser vertical extent, that consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, sulphosalts, electrum and in their upper parts barite, which are enclosed in veins of earlier quartz. The gold mineralisation in both deposit types is considered to be a co-precipitate of pyrite, with that in the first type of deposit produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system (Upflow Deposits); an example is Waihi in New Zealand. The other type is produced by mixing, a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an iron-bearing oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow of a hydrothermal system (Outflow Deposits); an example is Thames in New Zealand. Early recognition of these different types of deposits can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value on which to focus exploration drilling. Early recognition of an Upflow Deposit promotes an extensive program to delineate the extension of the main ore shoot. In contrast recognition of an Outflow Deposit requires a more intensive approach to find individual ore shoots which, although smaller than those found in Upflow Deposits, may be high-grade, particularly if there is earlier mineralisation present to act as a protore.

With the recent increase in the number of underground secondary sulphide dust explosions in Canada, Australia and elsewhere in massive sulphide ore mining industry, establishment of quantitative and realistic methods of analyzing the mine dust is of paramount importance. This paper examines and analyses dust samples from a mine area that has very recently experienced sulphide dust explosions. Also, it attempts to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust. Explosibility of the dust samples was determined by quantifying the oxidation reaction of the sulphide dust particles in a 1.2 L, Lindenberg open horizontal tube furnace. Percentage sulphur', % S oxidised during ignition of a dust sample of known assay, % S and dust concentration (g/m3) were determined by the quantitative chemical analysis of SO2 gas produced during the oxidation reaction. A dust sample with high sulphur content, 22.3% S (assayed) and mean particle size 9.82 pm, was found to exhibit a low degree of oxidation compared with a sample of low sulphur content, 15.44% S and mean particle size 21.7 tcm, at the same Temperature.

The ores described in this paper are from the two principal orebodies at Wiseman's Creek, a small village about 22 miles south-east of Bathurst in central-western New South Wales.The first official reference to mining at Wiseman's Creek is in "Mineral Statistics of New South Wales" of 1875, which reported that the Wiseman's Creek Copper Mining Company had proved a lode-later known as "North Wiseman's"-to a depth of 120 ft., where it was found to be 20 ft. wide. By 1876 the erection of a mill and smelting works had commenced, and the sulphide ore found to contain copper lead, zinc, silver and gold. Some oxidised ore was also being worked. Operations were, however, generally unsuccessful, and sporadic work up until 1907 produced only about 5,000 tons of ore. The other more important orebody of the locality-the Phoenix-was not opened until about 1895. By 1908, as reported by J. E. Carne, the shaft had been sunk 340 ft., with the extraction of both oxidised and primary ore. At the time of the slump in copper, pric'es in 1907 approximately 3,000 tons of, ore had been produced.Several smaller orebodies were discovered and worked during the same period as the North Wiseman's and Phoenix, but their output was more or less insignficant. THE OREBODIES AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL SETTINGIt is now impossible to examine the orebodies underground, but they appear to have formed a series of flat lenses, whose major axes were parallel to ,the foliation of the enclosing quartz-chlorite-muscovite schists. The largest ,of these lenses was worked as the North Wiseman's orebody, which was reported by Carne to vary in width from 1 ft. to 20 ft., and which probably extended discontinuously over a strike length of about 1,000 ft. The Phoenix orebody is stated to have varied from 1 ft. 6 in. to 3 ft. in width...

The Kidston breccia pipe is situated approximately 280 km west northwest of Townsville, north Queensland. It is currently Australia's largest gold producer with production varying between 8,000 and 16,000 tonnes of ore per day. Current reserves are estimated at 36.2 million tonnes averaging 1.74 C/t Au and 2.21 g/t Ag. Alluvial gold in the gullies surrounding the deposit was first discovered in the 1880's and between 1907 and 1948 small scale open cut and underground mining was undertaken. Advances in extractive metallurgy and an increase in the gold price were major factors influencing the recent exploration and development of large scale mining of the deposit by Placer Pacific and Kidston Gold Mines. The breccia pipe is trapezoid in shape with surface dimensions of 1100 m by 900 m. Clasts show only limited evidence of mixing during brecciation, with the pre-breccia stratigraphy still discernible on the basis of clast types. This lack of mixing together with the intimate association with intrusive activity, suggests that the brecia formed by collapse, probably associated with the escape of a large volume of irothermal fluid from a crystallising hatholith. Mineralisation and alteration are also sratially and temporally associated with rhyolite emplacement and brecciation. Pre-breccia mineralisation consists of laminated stockwork quartz veins associated with muscovite, quartz and orthoclase-epidote alteration. Stockwork veins contain either anomalous molybdenite or gold. Uneconomic early stage post-breccia mineralisation and alteration consists of cavity infill quartz-epidote and calcite associated with potassic and propylitic alteration respectively. Economic late stage post-breccia cavity infill and sheeted veining consists of quartz-carbonate-sulphide infill associated with phyllic alteration. The grade of gold mineralisation generally decreases downwards in the system with an increase in the amount of pyrrhotite relative to pyrite. Seven papers included in Session 8 of the Third International Mine Water Congress under the heading "Achievements in Mine Water Management & Research" have been reviewed. Only one paper, a case study by Masters on biological treatment of inorganically polluted effluent, has any connection with research in the sense of seeking new, generally applicable knowledge which would advance the frontiers of mine water management. The remainder deal with various aspects of the management of mine water ranging from investigation of the geology of a specific aquifer system through operating dewatering systems to the management of specific effluent disposal problems.

Permeability and air flow rate in the bed during iron ore sintering is crucial to controlling the sinter quality and productivity of a sinter plant due to its influence on the flame front speed. In the present work, the permeability of the bed during sintering was analysed by means of measured pressure drop and temperature at multiple points in the bed during sintering. Three different zones were categorised, ie humidified (green) bed, region of maximum resistance (high temperature zone) based on temperature, and sintered bed. Previous work has shown that the maximum pressure drop during sintering was due to several concurrent physico-chemical processes including dehumidification, calcination of fluxes, dehydroxylation of goethite, combustion of coke and melting of granules (>1200°C). To quantify the effect of the different process, sintering experiments were conducted in a milli-pot (diameter 53 mm, height 400 mm) with pressure and temperature measured at same location in bed. The milli-pot was fitted with four equidistant (80 mm apart) taps. Overall, five sections in the milli-pot were analysed for pressure drop at different times during sintering. It was found that in region of maximum resistance, coke combustion and flux calcination were highest contributors with ~35 per cent of the pressure drop when compared to other processes like de-humidification and goethite dehydroxylation which contributed to ~20 per cent and 25 per cent each respectively. The pressure drop contribution of the coke combustion region increased with increasing coke addition rate.

Data Metallogenica (DM) is unique as a global mineral sample collection and deposit database with over 70 000 rock samples and a wide range of descriptive, photographic and measurement data. Subscribers have access to approximately four gigabytes of on-line data with many examples included on the public pages. DM commenced its life on the Pacific rim in 1971 and much recent growth has focused on countries of the Pacific margin, particularly Australia, Fiji, Chile, Indonesia and Peru. Approximately 600 separate deposits and mineral occurrences in this region are represented in DM. The sets of rock samples have been photographed at high resolution and included on the web site, together with unpublished descriptions, deposit cross-sections, bibliographies, field and mine photographs, petrology and reflectance mineralogy. Figures and abstracts from PhD theses are a new addition and the donation of proprietary databases by companies and individuals is an encouraging trend. DM increasingly is being viewed as an acceptable and important repository for æfragileÆ and irreplaceable personal and company data, it is also being recognised in its true light as a high level information system, not solely a collection of rock samples. Data Metallogenica is a not-for-profit venture of AMIRA International that requires self-funding from December 2004. Growth and development must be funded entirely out of subscription and sponsorship revenues because no government subsidy is provided. The Pacific rim is in the mainstream of mining and exploration activities worldwide and those involved have much to gain from a dynamically sustaining DM. Learning is an iterative process, and we might reasonably expect that after more than a century of mining during an era of sustained technological development, (following a millenium or two of unrelieved hard physical graft), that the more obvious physical hazards could by now be competently managed. It is perhaps a reflection on the perversity of human nature that we have not fully learned our lessons in this exacting environment, and that worse, we have still too often failed to profit by the experience of those lessons. The more obvious underlying factors which impact on this situation are examined briefly, as a prelude to consideration of some outstanding examples of recurrent problems experienced in recent years. Reasons for the continued existence of sub-standard practices are outlined, with a focus on the human element, and finally proposals for appropriate remedial strategies are summarised. This paper therefore seeks to examine and discuss some of our deficiences and to suggest some directions for the way ahead.

The discovery of nickel sulphide deposits at Kambalda in 1966 heralded the development of ò an industry with a capital value of over $1.5 billion producing about 10% of the western world's nickel. ò an unprecedented exploration boom in which over $200 mil- lion was expended in 10 years in the search for nickel deposits. ò a major new class of nickel deposits stimulating exploration for similar deposits overseas. and rapidly propelled a struggling small mining and exploration company to become one of Australia's corporate giants, provid- ing a much-needed stimulus to economic activity in a region suffering from a severe downturn in its principal industry, gold mining. Production of nickel in Western Australia commenced at Kam- balda in 1967 and grew rapidly to a rate of over 30,000 t of con- tained nickel per annum in 1970, 40,000 t in 1973 and 50,000 t in 1975. Early production was aided by a shortage of nickel on the world market due to disruption of supply from the major Canadian producers, resulting in high free market prices for the metal. Since these early years, the industry has experienced a number of cycles of indifferent health due principally to market developments overseas, although the level of production of nickel in Western Australia remained fairly consistent. The two most serious of these, in 1977-8 and 1985-6, forced the closure of a number of mines. Current nickel prices are allowing remaining producers to enjoy a measure of relative prosperity, although there is little general speculation that this will be long-lived. Nickel deposits discovered in the exploration boom were almost exclusively related to ultramafic rocks. Volcanic peridotite (komatiite)-associated deposits, exemplified by the Kambalda ore- bodies, were the targets of initial exploration which was concen- trated on ultramafic sequences near lower stratigraphic contacts with underlying mafic rocks. Subsequently, discoveries made in coarse-grained dunites in interpreted intrusive settings broadened the search parameters.

There are serious problems in forecast- ing accurately and achieving this goal depends on good quality information, correct assumpt- ions and sound analysis. planner. The forecaster must focus attention on a number of key areas of interest. These areas include major economic trends and changing GNP structure, consumption time series, end-use consumption patterns and substitution potential, accurately updating data bases (up to 5 years ahead), random factor estimation and examination of both long term and secondary mine potential. While metal price forecasting has suffered due to recent uncertainties, with increased importance on planning tools and cost analyses, it is still a necessary function. Forecasting is subject to the real world and the metal industry is made up of imperfect markets in a dynamic state. The real world provides the challenge to improve the accuracy of forecasting.

Grinding media is a major consumable in mineral processing and therefore decreasing costs associated with its consumption is regularly considered a key goal for the minerals processing industry. Grinding media manufacturers have historically developed steels with improved wear life for their products as a way of delivering incremental media quality improvement. This has included increasing carbon levels from low-to-medium carbon steels up to the eutectoid carbon composition of 0.77% where the relationship between higher carbon and better wear performance is well understood. Producers today will regularly use grades in excess of 0.8% to further improve wear performance particularly for rolled grinding media.This paper first introduces the demonstrated relationship between this increased carbon content and improved wear resistance along with metallurgical rationale behind the high carbon production process and limitations. To test the performance improvement associated with the higher carbon steel grade, a series of Marked Ball Wear Tests (MBWT) were carried out. This paper also explores the relationship between ball properties, test methodology and wear performance and concludes by correlating increased carbon grade with a reduced consumption rate of between 3.1% and 6.1% in the tests conducted.CITATION:Bovell, M, Bose, R and Cheong, G, 2018. The satisfactory ventilation of an extensive coal mine is a subject which requires continual attention from all concerned.It must be remembered that a colliery contains many miles of workings, extending in all directions and throughout which noxious gases may be given off either naturally or by oxidation of the coal; fumes from explosives will be produced, dust will be gathered and carried in suspension, and water will be evaporated, producing a high humidity. Hence a considerable quantity of air in movement must be available to provide sufficient oxygen for men and horses, as well as to dilute and sweep away impurities, and maintain a tolerable degree of coolness.To maintain these conditions a modern colliery is divided up from the main ventilation shafts or adits (as the case may be) into a system of main airways, and in the working districts is further subdivided into district splits. To initiate the air movement, large centrifugal fans with a displacement capacity of up to 400,000 cu. ft. of air per minute are installed, generally in drifts off the upcast shaft, or adit, and at the return end of the ventilating circuit. These fans are thus exhausting fans and by producing a region of low density bring the heavier air at the other extremity of the circuit into movement to correct the difference in density, so far as it is not prevented by the frictional resistance of the airways. A flow of air is thus established, and it is obvious that to enable this volume of air to be as great as possible, the frictional resistance of the mine airways should be maintained at the lowest practicable figure. To this end, main airways should be as large as possible, have sides as smooth as practicable, and be straight, any necessary bends being of large radius.REQUIREMENTS OF THE VENTILATION SYSTEMThe New South Wales Coal Mines Regulation Act contains stringent provisions on requirements of the ventilation system.
