It was shown that manganese dioxide could be used as an oxidant in acid thiourea leaching of a gold ore. Manganese dioxide could generate high redox potentials and was as effective as hydrogen peroxide in the leaching process. Results obtained under closely controlled leaching conditions confirmed that high redox potentials enabled faster dissolution of gold to be obtained but led to extremely high reagent consumptions (thiourea, acid, and manganese dioxide). Additions of sodium sulphite solution in an attempt to lower thiourea consumption by reducing formamidine disulphide back to thiourea were only marginally successful. Although thio- urea consumption was slightly decreased, the consumption of acid and manganese dioxide was substantially increased and there was no net benefit in using sulphite. Tests in which a single addition of mangan- ese dioxide was made before addition of thiourea minimized overall reagent consumption and gave only a slightly lower dissolution rate of gold. This is a promising technique for further Investigation.

Bauxite from the Weipa and Andoom (North Queensland) deposits was treated to provide a low-iron raw material for high- alumina refractories or aluminium chloride manufacture. The operation involved passing crushed, calcined bauxite continuously through a single laboratory shaft furnace. Consecutive sulfidation and chlorination of the iron minerals within the furnace resulted in a beneficiate containing less than 2% (wt.) Fe203 and by-product ferric chloride con- taining only traces of aluminium.

Several technical and economic factors have to be taken into consideration in developing an optimal mining method. This paper describes some of the important factors learnt during the evolution of the sublevel cave mining method at Trojan Nickel Mine, part of the Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) in Zimbabwe. Sublevel caving (SLC) has been successfully implemented at Trojan mine since its introduction in 1994. The method has evolved over the past six years into a system that has brought about improvements in efficiencies and productivity. Although the original design parameters used were sound and provided a solid foundation for the system, they needed to be optimised to get the best out of the mining method. Improvements and changes have been made in areas such as the drilling process, charging and blasting techniques, ring pattern design, development size and shape, and the draw control system. This has enabled the mine to develop an SLC operation that is efficient and innovative. Experience gained, together with the theory available has given us a much better understanding of the system. This knowledge will be used in the future to enhance the system further. Given the low grades of the BNC Mines, management recognises that only through technical excellence and efficient mining can the mines reduce mining costs and maintain profitability and competitiveness on the world market. In the Zimbabwe mining industry reaction to technological change, mechanisation and advancement have been relatively slow, due to isolation and economic constraints, compared to the rest of the world. Economic difficulties prevail, with high inflation levels, a poor exchange rate, lack of foreign currency and other associated problems. Despite these constraints, the bold steps taken have transformed Trojan mine into a more efficient and competitive operation, presenting itself as the leading mine in the BNC group. Hilton Mine is being developed as an integrated component of the Mount Isa operation, to achieve continuity of silver/lead/zinc production well into the next century. The mine has a chequered history from its discovery in 1947 through several periods of intense development activity, each of which has been curtailed due to the further development of the Isa Mine operation. This era has now passed; to sustain increased production rates at Mount Isa, there is a requirement for Hilton ore in 1989. The decision was made in 1983 to accelerate the programme of Hilton development by installing skip hoisting facilities in the main service shaft (P49), to facilitate the development of the mine to pre-production status. The Hilton development plan provides for the mining of selected orebodies, a broadening of the underground exploration drilling programme, and the establishment of significant mine infrastructure. Several technical challenges have been identified as important. The Hilton orebodies, although occurring in the same rock type as Isa Mine, are more faulted, jointed and intersected by intrusive dykes. The ore is more variable in terms of ore continuity, boundaries, grade and metal distribution and the mineralogy more complex. As a consequence the development of this project consists of a co-ordinated programme of mine exploration and development, rock mechanics investigations and metallurgical research and development work. Production will commence in 1986 at a rate of 1000 t/day using mechanized cut and fill techniques. It is planned to introduce sublevel open stoping and by 1996/97 the production rate will be 2.5 million t/yr.

The mineralogy of the crocidolite (blue asbestos) veins at Wittenoom Gorge was examined to determine the cause of failure to recover soma of the fibre by the ore-dressing methods currently being practised. As a, result of this yamina.tion, several fo.Ctors pertinent to the problem were found to be a function of the pa.ragenosis of the veins. The occurrenceof magnetite from tho'cap rock within the veins was thought to be preventing fiborisation during troo.tment. Several petrologic features are described and their relation to the ore genesis is discussed, Comparison with the crocidolite deposits of the Union of South Africa is also considered.

A re-evaluation of the Hampton Boulder prospect in the early eighties resulted in a decision to proceed with mine development in December 1985. A 500 000 tpa gold treatment plant was commissioned in December 1986. The treatment facility was expanded to 1 600 000 tpa in July 1988. A tailings treatment plant to improve recoveries from harder gold bearing sulphide ores was built in December 1990. The development of an underground mine in 1991 meant that a source of sand for backfill was required. A sands plant to fulfil this requirement was commissioned during November 1991.As of June 1992 a total of 7 710 487 tonnes of ore have been treated through the New Celebration gold plant. Total gold production from inception of the new mine until June 1992 is 545 470 ounces obtained at an average recovery of 90.1 per cent from an average gold head grade of 2.4 g/t. The combined quoted ore reserves at the end of December 1991 was 14Mt grading 1.8 g/t gold

Evaluating the resources and reserves in a mineral deposit requires many interdependent subjective decisions. The decision of stationarity is arguably the most important. This decision includes: the choice of domains that subset the entire deposit, modelling the boundaries of each domain, and understanding and considering the nature of the contacts between domains. Reasonable choices are made in consideration of the geological context, the available data, the goals of the study and the available resources for the study. This paper reviews aspects of the decision of stationarity in modern resource assessment with a focus on quantifying uncertainty and using numerical/statistical tools to help the geomodeller. The use of volume/distance functions to quantify uncertainty in domain limits is particularly important and is presented in detail. The use of contact plots provides help with the continuity of grades across domain boundaries. Realisations are not assembled as a branching combinatorial of all possibilities, but as a set of realisations that provide a measure of uncertainty. This paper amounts to a definition of stationarity for modern resource assessment.

Geochemical exploration continues to play a significant role in new mineral discoveries inAustralia and elsewhere, including terrains where mineralisation is buried or otherwise obscured by regolith cover of various types. Transported regolith commonly restricts the migration of trace elements to surface, especially in arid terrains, presenting a range of problems for traditional geochemical exploration methods that employ surface samples. Regions dominated by transported cover include the northern parts of the Tasmanides in eastern Australia and the Yilgarn Craton which are variably covered by thick alluvium and Mesozoic to Cainozoic sedimentary rocks (Anand and Paine, 2002). A passive acoustic emission (AE) monitoring system has been developed and trialled on two M10000 IsaMillsTM. The analyser detects AE stress waves generated by grinding media impacts with the mill liner during mill operation. Locally propagating stress waves can be detected on the exterior liner surface using strategically mounted broadband accelerometers.The analyser has been developed into a robust commercial prototype system, and has been designed, installed and commissioned with Xstrata Technology at two mineral processing plants.A six-month field trial showed large-scale variation in AE power signature with process conditions. Analysis of the enveloped AE power output demonstrated a strong correlation with mill process conditions – more specifically grinding media relative loading, feed pulp density, feed volumetric flow rate and feed type.Placement of accelerometers along the length of the mill body provided key information on the grinding media relative deportment. The enveloped AE power detected by the mill body, discharge pipe and bearing housing sensors all captured information strongly correlated with mill operating parameters and process state.The prototype analyser demonstrates suitability as a long-term online tool for stirred mill performance monitoring, and potentially for optimisation and control, in beneficiation plants.CITATION:Jackson, C A, Spencer, S J, Masters, J, Sharp, V, McEwan, A, Rainey, S, Catanzano, A, Roberts, G and Millen, M, 2014. The design of mine openings and the assessment of their reserve are processes ihicl, require the routine manipulation of considerable amounts of data. A number of computer programs have been assembled to operate in a mini computer in order to provide some mechanical assistance for these processes. The system responds to plain language commands. which allows mining engineers to compute the reserves for a number of possible mining outlines, on an interactive basis. Methods of numerical analysis were used in preference to statistical or qeostatistical techniques.

A program of microseismic noise monitor ing for gas outbursts, in conjunction with other mining engineering measurements and observations, is being undertaken at Leichhardt colliery in Queensland. Headings are developed at present by shotfiring. The equipment being used in this study includes piezoelectric accelerometer assemblies to detect microseismic noise which is then transmitted to a surface base station by cable. Data are recorded on an analogue magnetic tape recorder and are also analysed on-line using a commercially-available acoustic emission pulse analyser. It is proposed to re-interpret recorded data using various modes of analysis and to interface a desktop computer to the existing system to permit continuous monitoring on the mine site. No outbursts have been recorded or analysed and only a limited number of develop- ment shots, and the resultant microseismic activity, have been recorded to date.

The application of known pelletizing tech- nology was successful in the agglomeration of zinc concentrate into pellets of minus 6mm siz- ing using fine zinc calcine and sulphuric acid as binder. Subsequent roasting trials conducted in a 0.3 m diameter fluid bed reactor, showed that the pellets satisfactorily withstood hot physical abrasion during fluidization. Fines generation was low and the pellet calcine was hard, possessing excellent handling properties. Results of laboratory scale static pellet sinter- ing tests showed conclusively that the deterior- ation in sinter physical quality experienced with fine calcine was not apparent when the calcine was added to the mix in pellet form. Based on the results of small scale exper- imental work, a one tonne per hour pilot plant was constructed and operated. Several thousand tonne of pellets were produced-for fluid bed roasting in Badische Analin and Soda Fabrik (B.A.S.F.) turbulent layer (T.L.) roasters previously designed for roasting iron pyrite concentrate. Continuity of the T.L. fluid bed roasting operations was achieved when the waste heat boilers were replaced with atmospheric coolers and thus eliminated the problems of gas flow restrictions. Sinter plant trials were conducted over a period of two weeks with the addition of pellet calcine to the sinter feed. Results showed a marked improvement in sinter plant performance, and as a result of better bed permeability, increased sinter production was achieved, with- out significant deterioration in sinter quality.

The effect of using SO2 as an anodic depolariser in the electrowinning of copper from aqueous acid sulphate solutions has been studied using cells without/with a ceramic diaphragm. In all cases SO2-saturation of the electrolyte/anolyte decreased the anode potential by 68 to 75 per cent largely due to a change in the anode reaction from the oxidation of water to the oxidation of SO2 . However, poor quality deposits and low current efficiencies are encountered if SO2 is allowed free-access to the copper being deposited at the cathode. This situation is easily avoided by using a diaphragm to restrict SO2 to the anode compartment and for these conditions the resultant copper deposits are of a similar (high) quality to those obtained in the absence of SO2.

The paper describes the design of the dilute medium and medium recovery circuits installed at the coal preparation plants at the Cornwall Coal Company's Fingal Mine, and the BP Coal Australia's Howick Mine. These circuits maximize the use of clarified water for rinsing to improve the mass transfer of adhering medium from the coal surface into the carrying liquid, and have been combined with the use of a two stage magnetic separator. The separator utilizes a conventional concurrent first stage and a counter-rotation second stage. This combination results in high medium recoveries during both normal operation, and start up and shut down phases when large quantities of medium can be lost from a conventional circuit. Overall losses using this circuit have been estimated to be, 200g/t, over a twelve month period. Further advantages in plant operation are also obtained, especially steady operating conditions in the centre-tube pump tank, lower slimes contamination of the product, and lower quantities of non magnetics trapped in the separator concentrates. The techniques are particularly suited to incorporation in circuits treating coals containing high percentages of sticky and difficult clays, as are found in the Walloon coal measures.

The mechanism and rate-limiting step of carbonaceous reduction of zinc from slags was investigated in the laboratory. Disks of graphite were rotated in ZnO-containing slags at various speeds for fixed periods at 1250 to 1325¦C. The mass loss was used as a measure of the amount of ZnO reduced. Application of the Levich equation indicated that at rotation speeds at which it is valid, the reduction was chemically controlled with an activation energy of 27 kcal/mol. At zero rotation speed the reduction of ZnO by carbon appeared to be slag-phase mass transfer controlled with an activation energy of 38 kcal/mol. An increase in the FeO content of the slag increased the rate of reduction while an increase in sulphur content decreased the rate of reduction. When FeO was present in the slag, reduction appeared to occur by a combination of indirect reduction of ZnO by carbon and by reduction by FeO with reduction of Fe203 back to FeO by carbon. The effect of sulphur was consistent with a surface blockage mechanism due to the surface active nature of sulphur in slags.

The efficient and profit-maximising daily and long-term management of the Vera Nancy resource depends on decisions based upon assay data. This paper examines the range of sample sources, the methods of sample collection, assay techniques and Quality Assurance used by the mine. The orebody has a relatively low nugget effect for a gold mine (around 25 per cent) and this greatly assists in reducing sampling error and producing reliable assay data for production decision-making. Reconciliation between mine and back-calculated mill grades generally sees the mine under-calling mill grades by around four per cent.

The Otago Goldfield has produced approximately 8 million ounces of alluvial gold and over 2.5 million ounces of hard rock gold and is currently home to New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. In the eyes of explorers this production history makes the goldfield a good place to explore.   Modern exploration in the Otago Goldfield commenced in the late 1970s with the exploration for tungsten. However, a rapid rise of the gold price in the early 1980s saw the focus shift to the exploration for gold which lead to the discovery of the Macraes Gold Project in 1984, which since it came into production in 1990 has been New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. With the exception of the Macraes Gold Project, exploration continued in the Otago Goldfield for a further 20 years without further success.   In 2006, Glass Earth (NZ) Limited (Glass Earth) reviewed all the exploration technologies applied to the Otago region and available geological data, including the 1996 OceanaGold Helicopter Electro-Magnetic (HEM) data, and concluded that combined magnetics and HEM were able to delineate the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) which hosts the Macraes Gold Project. Unlike previous explorers who explored the Otago region in a piecemeal manner, Glass Earth opted to collect a new, region-wide dataset which could be integrated with all previous collected geological information to come up with new exploration concepts and targets. As part of this process, Glass Earth applied in mid 2006 for New ZealandÆs largest on-shore gold Prospecting Permit, PP39-322 which was subsequently granted in November 2006. In mid January 2007, Glass Earth commenced acquisition of approximately 50 000 line kilometres of HEM data, making the Otago regional aerial geophysical survey (survey) the largest aerial geophysical survey ever undertaken in New Zealand.   This paper will report on the progress of the Otago Regional aerial geophysical survey and outline some of the preliminary findings from what is still a work in progress.

A sample of fifty fractured low chromium-molybdenum alloy drill steel rods was investigated. Each rod was of the forged collar integral tungsten carbide type in common use in Australia.Examination of a new rod of the same type showed that a zone of spheroidized carbide about 0·25 in. wide was present about 12 in. from the shank end.Examination of the fractured rods revealed that 78 per cent. of failures occurred within 0·25 in. of the spheroidized zone at the shank end but in the main stem of the rod rather than actually in this softened zone where it might be expected to occur.This predominant type of failure at the shank end in the steel rods is caused by a highly anodic region corresponding to the first stages of spheroidization of carbides present in the steel. Accelerated corrosion in the narrow band havil\g this structure induces the formation of stress-concentrating corrosion pits, 78 per cent. of failures in this region being due to corrosion fatigue.The remaining 22 per cent. of failures, occurring in the as-rolled stem, were due to either corrosion fatiglie if failure were initiated at the water-hole surface of the drill rod, or to a decarburized outer surface if failure originated at this surface.Temperatures producing spheroidization were determined as 6007600C.Evidence suggests that approximately 75 per cent, of shank-end failures in all forged collar drill rods can be attributed to corrosion fatigue occurring preferentially in that section showing partial spheroidization of carbides· produced by the forging and hardeningoperations.Methods are suggested for reducing the frequency of fatigue failures in drill rods.INTRODUCTIONAn integral part of all tunnelling operations through rock is the drilling of suitably placed holes i:n.to which explosive is subsequently rammed and exploded.The drilling operation, whether for metalliferous mining or for general civil engineering constructional work; is...

Blast vibration control and assessment techniques have been developed which supplement traditional charge mass scaling methods. The improved techniques, which can be used to predict air and ground vibration levels at the planning stage, and to assist in the control of blasting operations, have reduced the level of operating risk concerning blast vibration. In addition to such factors as charge mass, distance and blast vibration levels, these additional techniques take account of orientation of the blasting face, topographic shielding, wavefront reinforcement, and meteorological conditions. They have assisted in compliance with specified blast vibration levels for environmental licence and mining lease conditions, the reduction of blast vibration nuisance to residents in the area surrounding a mine, and control of building and rock structure response in adjacent areas on the mine lease area.
