This paper is an outgrowth of a continuing compilation of the geology of Chilean ore deposits by Carlos Ruiz who was the author in 1965 of Geologia y Yacimientos Metaliferos de Chile which was the definitive compilation of the ore deposits of Chile. A new version was written by him in 1988, with the co-operation of Federico Peebles L, published in Geologia, Distribucion y Genesis de los Yacimientos Metaliferos Chilenos. Over the past eight years J David Lowell studied the geology of the Chilean mineral belts in connection with planning mineral exploration for copper and gold.

The role of biological agents in the gold mining industry is currently limited to the use of microorganisms in bioleaching and bioremediation. However, there is a variety of possibilities in which biotechnology could aid the mining industry in the future. In this article we discuss the potential for the development of these novel biotechnologies and the role they can play in the exploration for new gold deposits, the processing of ores and the post-mining remediation of sites. The development of these biotechnologies has been enabled by rapid advances in our molecular-level understanding of the role microorganisms play in the solubilisation, dispersion and precipitation of gold. An understanding of the distribution of microbial species in soils overlying mineralisation can be utilised to develop bioindicator systems that assist with gold exploration. An in-depth knowledge of how microorganisms interact with gold complexes is being used to develop in-field biosensors, supporting exploration. Processing technologies may be improved based on advances in our understanding of the interactions between microorganisms, ore minerals, cyanide and gold. For instance, cyanide-producing microorganisms are being investigated for use in in situ leaching of gold. In turn, the use of cyanide-utilising microorganisms for the degradation of cyanide is being explored. Combined, the implementation of these biotechnologies in the gold mining sector may revolutionise the industry, leading to greener, more efficient exploration for and extraction of gold.CITATION:Zammit, C M, Cook, N, Ciobanu, C L, Brugger, J and Reith, F, 2013. This paper presents the results of a field study designed to assess the impact of vane rotation speed on the estimated undrained strength for two Australian bauxite tailings storage facilities. The vane test results are assessed against cone penetration and dissipation tests results to identify if partial drainage may be an issue. An innovative tool capable of measuring pore pressures during vane shear testing, the Piezovane™, is introduced as an improvement over the standard field vane to assess drainage conditions in real-time.

Re-commencement of mining in the Western Zone of Beaconsfield Gold Mine following a seismically-induced rockfall fatality in April 2006 required a change of mining method involving drilling and blasting from specially developed drives in the footwall of the orebody. Broken ore is mucked remotely from ore drives on each level. Support in the footwall drives is required to maintain stability during their development and as stopes are retreated, which increases induced stresses and further seismic events are triggered. The paper outlines the challenges involved and methods used to select the footwall drive support to handle both static and dynamic load demand. The importance of load development in the support system, its displacement capacity, the compatibility of support elements and energy absorption capacity of the support system are highlighted. It is usual in any support selection process to ensure that capacity exceeds demand to create a factor of safety. In this case the demands on the system relate to load, displacement and energy absorption and the support system capacity for each must ensure that appropriate factors of safety for each are achieved. The paper shows how these factors are not independent and that selecting a high factor of safety for load can lead to compatibility problems with support elements in the support system.

Sungun Copper Mine, which is the second largest copper mining operation in Iran has a large tailings storage facility with a seepage control dam located downstream of the main dam. Surface and groundwater in surrounding area of the tailings storage facility has been monitored for ten years. This paper will discuss the results of the surface and groundwater monitoring and seepage control at the Sungun Copper Mine. The results of the study show that if the tailings storage facility influence the water quality of the rivers, this effect is not significant, so that the prevailing parameters of the measured parameters were within the permissible standard of drinking water in Iran.CITATION:Rashidi Nejad, F, Naraghi, S and Pirouznia, N, 2018. The algorithms employed by the commercial tools are either heuristic algorithm or iterative optimisation of a subsystem. This often results in a suboptimal schedule. In this paper, the author presents a new scheduling algorithm that incorporates with a novel stockpile configuration system, an improved algorithm on multiple processes and a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) global optimisation model. It can simultaneously optimise stockpiles, blending, multiple processes as well as multiple mines. The oil crisis had repercussions throughout the world and most importantly on mining, where the drive to reduce the use of liquid fossil fuel led directly to the appearance and subsequent growth in the design of mobile crushers in late 1970s early 1980s, which heralded a new era in both quarrying and mining. Even though mobile crushing has now become common, even preferred in the quarrying industry, this has not been the case in mining. This paper looks at why, in spite of the initial optimism, this technology has yet to gain full acceptance in the mining industry. The paper examines some of the problems that have been encountered in the past and offers suggestions as to how they can be avoided by applying the appropriate technology. It then takes a look at the successful application of the semi-mobile in-pit crushing system used by Italian Thai Development Company (ITD), on the Mae Moh Phase 5 contract and examines how the techniques used successfully there could be applied to the industry at large.

This paper discusses the challenges, solutions and lessons learnt as tunnelling work continues on the Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement (MMSR) project.The MMSR project is a $220 million dollar project for the Melbourne Water Corporation. It involves the construction of approximately 4.2 km of new sewer from the southern fringe of the CBD through the inner metropolitan suburbs of Port Melbourne and South Melbourne.Of the 4.2 km of sewer currently in construction approximately 2.2 km will be constructed using a 2.95 m diameter Lovat EPB tunnel boring machine (TBM) with approximately 1.9 km of small diameter (300 to 600 mm) reticulation sewers constructed using trenchless techniques.These sewers are being constructed in a dense urban environment, which means that the tunnels and shafts are often in close proximity to buildings and structures. The underground constructionof the sewer is further complicated by the variable geology of the ancient Yarra River delta which includes weathered basalts, the infamous Coode island silt formation and fine loose sands.Some of the key challenges and lessons learnt so far during construction include:· steering and alignment control of the TBM through very soft silt with little residual strength,· development and refinement of a monitoring and alarm system for leaving the machine dormant on a day works only project,· control and measurement of tunnel lining defl ection during ring build and grouting,· prediction and monitoring of surface settlements during tunnel excavation,· improved understanding of the geology and hydrogeology at this previously unchartered area of Melbourne,· consolidation settlement due to dewatering at shafts required careful construction controls, and· ground support and excavation in close proximity to the existing 110 year old sewer which requiredvery detailed risk control measures.

When a coalmine fire occurs, it is crucial to judge the developing trends inside the fire area by analysing the changes of gas concentration in order to formulate the proper rescue measures. At present, few researchers have focused on the relationship between the changing trend of gas product and basic characteristics of fire in the coal fire extinguishing process. To study the relationship of basic characteristics of coalmine fire during the extinguishing process, an experimental platform for coal combustion in a confined space was built, and gas production, flame image and coal temperature during the extinguishing process were monitored and analysed by an online continuous gas analysis instrument, camera and thermocouple. Research shows that during the burning phase of the coal sample in the confined space, the flame zone decreases gradually due to insufficient gas supply. The size of the flame zone fluctuates and shares a positive correlation with CO concentration, while sharing a negative correlation with O2 and CO2 concentrations. Then, in the extinguishing phase, the increasing rate of CO2 concentration and the decreasing rate of O2 concentration both decrease gradually, but CO concentration would rise for a period before it eventually decreases. Coal temperature continues to rise in the open flame stage and does not go down until the flame is extinguished.CITATION:Lei, B W, Wu, B and Duan, B J, 2015. This paper describes a case history of using an integrated geochemical and hydrogeological approach to predicting solute transport from gold mine tailings in highly fractured volcanic terrain. Two modes of transport are identified, namely discrete fissure flow and diffuse seepage through the intervening weathered rock. A simple mass balance approach is used to predict concentrations at points of emergence because most of the seepage migration will be by way of the discrete fissures where advective transport will predominate. The mass balance method has been modified to allow for natural degradation of weak acid dissociable cyanide. The long term effects of diffuse seepage are also examined.

Zinc alloy castings continue to account for a very large, world-wide end-use market for zinc. However, an ever expanding multitude of other materials and processes are increasingly providing viable, cost-effective alternatives to designers, many of whom have no particular allegiance to any one industry. In order to meet this challenge, innovation of and for the zinc hot chamber pressure die casting process, in concert with sustained and inventive market development, is clearly required. While 'Quality' is now the watchword, and the goal of zero defects is being rigorously pursued, other important goals which must be addressed include net shape casting, enhanced productivity and increased energy efficiency. The paper gives an overview of several practical, process-orientated, projects designed to help achieve these goals. For example, a project designed to understand and precisely measure dimensional changes of castings with time has provided some of the critical information needed for net shape casting. A second study is looking anew at surface quality in relation to process conditions as an important step toward the goals of zero scrap rate and increased productivity. Developing the correct die casting machine parameters for achieving optimal quality and properties of zinc (ZA) die castings is a further example of research designed to benefit both the die caster and his customer, chiefly the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). A project on die soldering or galvanising in response to varying process parameters is similarly being considered in order to foster increased understanding and avoidance of problems, with a special interest in the use of special coatings. The maintenance or expansion of the future market for zinc die casting alloys also depends on design for functional applications, as an adjunct to their traditional decorative use. The role that alloys with enhanced properties can play, such as ZATEC, a new high creep resistant alloy developed specifically for elevated stress/elevated temperature applications, will be briefly discussed.

There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

Base metal mineralisation occurs at several locations within the regionally metamorphosed Kanmantoo Group on the southeastern flank of the Mount Lofty Ranges between Kanmantoo and Strathalbyn, 50 km southeast of Adelaide. Sulphide mineralisation is of three main types (Seccombe et al, 1985):1. copper deposits, at the Kanmantoo and Bremer mines, South Hill prospect and several minor occurrences,2. lead-zinc deposits at Aclare, Wheal Ellen, Strathalbyn, St. Ives, Scott's Creek, and Glenalbyn mines,3. pyrite-pyrrhotite mineralisation of the Nairne pyrite deposit and many other pyritic schist units within the Kanmantoo Group.Syntheses of folding, metamorphism and stratigraphy of the Kanmantoo Group were given by Kleeman and Skinner (1958), Offler (1960, 1963), Offler and Fleming (1968), Marlow (1975), Mancktelow (1979) and Parker (1986). Studies of the general relationships of mineralisation to structure in the Kanmantoo area were given by Grasso and McManus (1954), Mirams (1962), Poole (1969), and Lindqvist (1969).Several conflicting views on the origin of mineralisation in the Kanmantoo Group have been proposed. Thomson (1975) considered much of the mineralisation as a late-stage product of regional metamorphism and he, like Parker (1986) and Lambert et al (1987), stressed the importance of major lineaments as an ore control. However, Lindqvist (1969) and Verwoerd and Cleghorn (1975) tentatively suggested a syn-sedimentary origin to the Kanmantoo copper deposit and Jensen and Whittle (1969) and Seccombe et al. (1985) on the basis of sulphur isotope data proposed a bacteriogenic sulphur source and a sedimentary origin for sulphides in the Nairne pyrite deposit. The latter suggested that most copper deposits represent stockwork, vein or disseminated zones within subsurface vents whereas massive mineralisation at Wheal Ellen and Aclare mines probably accumulated on the ocean floor.This paper presents new geological information on the structural and metamorphic setting of the base metal deposits and attemptsto relate this information to previous regional studies of the Kanmantoo Group. Estimates of pressure and temperatureof peak metamorphic conditions based on silicate mineral stabilities are considered in relation to various silicate and sulphidegeothermometers which have not previously been applied to rocks in the Kanmantoo Group.

There are many compelling reasons why correct sampling schemes should be standard practice in the mining industry, yet there are numerous examples where poor sampling practices are known to exist in the business yet permitted to continue. It is not just technical issues that can be ascribed to the reasons for the continued use of incorrect methods. This paper proposes non-technical reasons why incorrect sampling practices continue, and identifies potential ways to overcome them.

A review of the current pit design procedures and their performance has been undertaken recently by Mining Research Associates (MRA) and the CSIRO Division of Geomechanics. Visits were made to mines covering a wide range of operations. A questionnaire was completed by each mine in order to collate the relevant information. Interviews were also made with representatives of the Mines Departments to ascertain their role in regulating mine designs. Design expectations were compared with field performance, and reasons for variations noted. Problems associated with designs were identified and suggested methods of alleviating the problems have been made.

Atlas Copco is one of the worldÆs leading providers of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2009). Furthermore, the company spans 160 markets and held 34 000 employees at the end of 2008. The company is organised under three ætechniquesÆ whereby the Construction and Mining TechniqueÆs business division is located within +rebro, Sweden. This paper is aimed at briefly facilitating information on how the company and more specifically, the Construction and Mining Technique is run. Also, by sharing my experiences, this paper is intended to encourage and motivate students currently studying for a degree relevant to the minerals industry, to apply for this extremely beneficial scholarship. Through a number of presentations relating to the various divisions, products and aftermarket services of the company, I came to realise that Atlas Copco extends beyond simply selling equipment suitable for the mining and civil industries. This tour through Sweden also contained highlights of visiting the Underground Rock Excavation factory, Surface Drilling Equipment factory and Secoroc divisions. I was also fortunate enough to participate in a tour of the LKAB mine in Kiruna. In addition, time was allocated to less industry related activities, and I was able to go dog sledging, sip vodka cocktails out of ice glasses at the Ice Hotel and enjoy traditional Swedish foods of moose and reindeer. Most important and memorable to me; however, was the ability for employees of Atlas Copco to speak of the company and their products with such passion and enthusiasm, which truly made this a motivational and unforgettable experience.

In the British coal mining industry, during the last decade, a great deal of environmental monitoring experience was acquired, particularly in the Doncaster Area of the Yorkshire coal- field, which had a long history of spontaneous combustion and gas emission problems. This paper summarises the experience obtained and shows how the introduction and operation of these systems has resulted in improved techniqu- es for fire detection and control. Some of these systems are described in detail with emphasis placed on the uses to which output data are put, and their impact upon management at colliery level. Reference is also made to the problems encountered in the development of such systems and how they were solved. The paper also makes reference to the recent Research and Development work of the NCB's Scientific Department and Mining Res- earch Development Establishment (MRDE), which was directed to the design and application of a range of underground sensors, and so ensured continuing progress in this field. The paper refers briefly to a new comprehensive monitoring unit and an integrated fire detection and data transmitting system which are currently being assessed in the Yorkshire coalfield.

Excavator output rates given in Makers' catalogues are sometimes based on favourable operating conditions. Mine operators and planners are more interested in the Effective Hourly Output in normal operation (Qe) a plant system can give hour by hour and year after year in a particular application. The number of hours mining plant will be available for normal operation will be less than the annual total of 8760 h. The number of the available hours which can be utilised at Qe will depend largely on the number and types of units in the plant system, the manners in which they are applied and the nature of the deposit in which they work. The emphasis herein is on continuous systems for deep stripping with BWE's as the primary excavator. Examples and suggestions are given for the annual hours at Qe for some BWE systems.
