Most of the operating steelmaking capacity currently relies on conventional, coal-based steelmaking processes. Currently, direct reduced iron (DRI) is only produced in regions where energy is available at low cost. To align with net-zero emissions goals, steelmaking capacity must transition to loweremissions steelmaking technology. Direct reduction of iron ore will get one of the preferred methods in the future due to its high technology readiness. New reduction technologies include hydrogenbased direct reduction processes. To ensure optimal efficiency during DRI production and to cope with newly developed technologies, processes need to be monitored more frequently and accurate. Traditionally quality control of raw materials and DRI has relied on time consuming physical testing, wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy of DRI that defines its properties is not frequently monitored. Process monitoring and quality control of DRI is possible by using modern X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. In addition to the metallic iron content (Femet), metallisation (Metn) and the total carbon content (Ctot), XRD analysis also identifies the overall mineralogical phase composition. This allows additional information about the reduction process and enables fast counteractions on changing raw material mixtures. The benefits of the quantitative determination of the phase composition and the calculation of process critical parameters to produce DRI will be demonstrated with a case study

Exact com-parisons are hard to fix because of the wide variety of factors involved .but the Institute of Pab?Lic Affairs .(Victoria) places Australia fifthin the world, excelled only by the U.S.A., Canada, Sweden and Switzerland. The next best after Australia are the United Kingdom, West Germany and France.How we achieved such a high standard of living is a vast subject for study but some of the economic aspects of our climb from abject poverty to a position of near affluence can readily be identified.

Mining at the Tuckabianna Mining Centre in the Murchison district of Western Australia ceased in 1997, after the production of 550 000 ounces of gold at an average grade of 2.5 g/t from 22 separate open pits (Tectonic Resources, 2006). Like many historic mining camps in WA, Tuckabianna was considered exhausted of gold, such that an economic project could not be sustained on the existing resources. Since 1997, three separate companies have owned the Tuckabianna leases. Each of these companies completed minor exploration and some form of mining study to determine if mining could be sustained. All three companies concluded that the remaining resources were insufficient to support an economic project. Silver Lake Resources acquired the adjacent Tuckabianna, Comet and Moyagee projects in 2007 with a combined resource base of 693 000 ounces of gold in 11 separate deposits. In September 2009, Silver Lake commenced exploration in the Murchison targeting extensions to the main resources at the three project centres and completing targeted regional exploration across the lease holding. At the same time, a detailed evaluation of all historic drill data was completed and all resources re-estimated. This has culminated in the resource base increasing to 1.5 million ounces of gold in 20 separate deposits, with two new discoveries being made. In August 2010, a mining feasibility study was commissioned. Preliminary results from the study indicate that an economic stand alone project can be sustained for a minimum of five years. The ability to bring the remaining resource from a once unloved project into production is due to a number of factors: historically high gold price, combining adjacent projects into a single operation, evaluation of all resources regardless of size and grade, and well funded exploration directed to both resource extensions and new discoveries. Using the Tuckabianna Project as an example, this paper attempts to outline the strategy Silver Lake used to define the resources to justify the capital expenditure required for production, and give a summary of some of the successes and failures made as the projects progress towards mining. Examples of where being too rigid and over exuberant have resulted in less than optimal use of expenditure are used to high-light the difficulties in exploring in mature terrains. Evaluation of the success of a company’s exploration strategy at all scales from project acquisition to target selection is critical to the success of future project development. This paper has been part of that process for Silver Lake with some interesting discussions and insights being made. It is hoped that some of the points discussed can be applied to other projects to help achieve the best outcome from the assets available to a company.

Reconciliation is a powerful tool used by mining operations to compare the mass and grade of ore produced with what was estimated before mining. The primary objective of reconciliation is to verify that the estimated planned metal production is achieved during processing, allowing issues to be identified for which adjustments can be made throughout the mining value chain to improve recovery and maximise efficiency. Traditionally, the mine plan is based on estimated mine grades using sampled exploration drill hole or blasthole grades. Reconciliation discrepancies between the mine plan and mill are common due to such factors as insufficient or non-representative sampling, poorly conceived models, or unrecognised blast movement. MineSense Technologies Limited® (MTL) has developed an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensor-based ore classification system that is installed on mining equipment to provide real-time grade estimates of run-of-mine material at bucket, truck, or belt-scale. Bucket level grade estimates provide insights into grade variations at the mine face that were never before available. This data set eliminates some of the leading causes of reconciliation discrepancies and enables tracking of tonnages and grades from the mine face to the processing plant at bucket resolution with confidence. Bucket-by-bucket grades at the mine face enable dynamic optimisation of the mine plan to stabilise the mill feed grade through blending of mine and stockpile loads. Beyond stabilising feed grade, Mine to Mill reconciliation combined with the full XRF spectrum response can generate proxy relationships to ore characteristics like hardness and recovery. These properties can then be predicted at the mine face, enabling further optimisation of the downstream mill feed, not only for grade, but also for power and water consumption, reagent addition, and recovery. This paper presents the benefits of MTL technology for grade reconciliation and mill performance optimisation at a Cu Mine in BC (Canada).

The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

Considering the capital outlay, running costs and inherent difficulties of backfilling operations at depth the benefits need to be clearly established, quantified and then exploited. Expansion of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company towards even deeper, highly faulted ground, and the process of establishing codes of practice for the management of rockfalls and rockbursts, required that a sound support strategy be formulated. This paper describes the derivation of an overall backfilling strategy on Vaal Reefs. Use was made of experience gained over some 12 years with backfilling. Numerical modelling was used to estimate potential benefits of backfilling the deepest mining areas still to be extracted. In exploiting a probably unique opportunity, two contiguous mining areas bounded by the same major geological structures, were compared. One was extensively backfilled and the other not at all. Shaft sinking through a backfilled stope added another dimension to the database.

The ever increasing trend of the gold price has meant that ore deposits that were previously considered too complex, or unattractive by virtue of their low gold grade, are now being investigated more closely. These ore deposits present a greater risk of failure than previously was the case. To ensure that the risk of project failure is reduced and the maximum value is derived from the deposit, its mineralogy, as well as other characteristics, should be well understood such that the optimum process can be designed.Quite often the flow sheet design is assembled using individual process components, from various sources, and without consideration of the complete system. Test work programs require careful planning and an open viewpoint in terms of comminution circuit design particularly with respect to ever increasing power costs across the globe. As an example, high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology in many cases offers better mineral liberation than the more traditional comminution devices and it does so at a reduced energy input, and yet HPGR test work is often restricted in its scope due to the perceived novelty of the technology and the resultant lack of generally agreed and accepted test work routes.In this paper the authors outline a typical HPGR test work process route driven by the needs of different ore types and illustrate that to optimise the project value, any test work program should start from the premise that thorough understanding of the ore is vital.CITATION:Bookless, T, Meadows, D and Pownell, J, 2013. Among countries afflicted with insLantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, Australia is noteworthy because of lesser disturbances of the seams and of the occurrence of CO2 in the seam gas from place to place. Research sLarted with the 1954 occurrences at Collinsville and Metropolitan Collieries leading to early publications reviewing the problem, describing occurrences and assessing variations in proneness factors in the two affected coal basins.The basic requirements for proneness include coals of high gas sorptive capacity, high ground stress, use of a mining method which provides higher stress concentrations and limits emission of seam gas, including high rates of advance. With CO2 in the seam gas proneness is greater.The mechanism is complex and not fully understood, but involves the coal, the roof, the floor, the gas, the mine opening, the ventilation, the kind of work and the rate of work. Geological disturbances such as faults and dykes increase proneness and tend to localise occurrences. On-occurrence of outbursts in some mines is difficult to explain.Outbursts are seen as a continuing threat to modem deep Australian mining of high rank coal.The simplest contributory factor to reduce is gassiness - despite the low permeability of outbursting coals - and present practices are showing promise. The greatest challenges for the future are partial degasification to below a known threshold figure and confirmation that this reduction is achieved and identification of anomalous geological structures ahead, the most likely locations for instantaneous outbursts to occur. The advances made to date give promise of a future with reducing experiences of uncontrolled instantaneous outbursts. For the Bulli seam particularly, working to achieve prediction and prevention is most urgent.

Mineral sands represent an important new resource being developed in the Murray Basin, including parts of western Victoria. This paper will outline a simple methodology for mineral sands characterisation, developed as part of the AMIRA-managed project P777 æThe Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of ClericiÆs Solution)Æ. This project is currently sponsored by three multinational mining companies (De Beers Consolidated Mines, Iluka Resources Limited and Rio Tinto Limited) and is developing an innovative laboratory mineral characterisation procedure that will allow the replacement of the currently employed highly-toxic chemicals.Mineral sand resources almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively heavy) mineral. Titanium minerals are found with a large range of titanium contents, giving rise to density variation and often subjective mineralogical descriptions. Companies tend to rely on laboratory heavy liquid separation in the evaluation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (æheavyÆ) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilised at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. However, beyond this value currently only organic liquids can be used. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used; however, this presents significant health and safety hazards. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0, hence æClericiÆs solutionÆ. For the characterisation of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (eg anatase sg 3.9, rutile sg 4.2, ilmenite sg 4.4 û 4.7 and zircon sg 4.6 û 4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to ClericiÆs solution. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by very few laboratories worldwide with costs reflecting the chemical costs (though extensive efforts are made to recover and reuse the liquid, plus the requirement of its removal from the mineral samples), the infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (eg blood testing of exposed staff, inventory management). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation is being developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions, that can replace ClericiÆs solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (eg -250+150 microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separations at relative densities above 5.0 will be outlined and the comparison of results with ClericiÆs solution presented.

The demand for iron-ore is ever increasing with the industry directly employing 60 500 people in a range of highly skilled roles in Australia. In the year 2019, the global iron-ore production was 2.85 billion tonnes. It is estimated that each tonne of beneficiated iron ore produces 400 kg of tailings. The IOTs are fine, dense and stable crystalline material mainly composed of iron oxides, alumina and silica. The current and most applied method of iron-ore tailings (IOTs) disposal is using subaqueous disposal of tailings in dams. The footprint generated by a tailings dam is massive and requires constant monitoring due to the possibility of a failure making the operation and maintenance of tailings dam extremely expensive. This review briefly discusses the known causes of tailings dam failures, their impact to the environment and day-to-day human life and potential applications of IOTs. The increase in water content enhances the pressure on dam walls. This in turn increases the liquefaction potential of the tailings and reduces the overall strength of the dam making it more vulnerable to failure. Potential applications of IOTs are in paints, aggregates in construction materials and bricks. The reuse of IOTs reduce waste and generates further revenue facilitating a path towards a sustainable future for the industry.

Fine feed fractions in the size range from 1 to 40 ¦m of materials with different hardness as limestone and silicon carbide have been stressed in two different devices. A tungsten-carbide-blodc allows a single stressing with a pressure up to 2000 MPa and a 4-piston-block enables a multiple stressing procedure in which the material bed is stressed in alternating directions with a pressure up to 700 MPa. The experiments show energy absorption as the major factor for the interparticle breakage of hard material, like quartz, zircon silicate, silicon carbide and smelted oonindum, pressure, however, does not influence the results within the investigated range from 100 to 700 MPa and even up to 2000 MPa for corundum. But the breakage of the middle-hard limestone depends on the pressure so far as more fineness can be produced if the same energy is introduced at a lower pressure level. The creation of very fine and microfine fragments decreases strongly with increasing hardness of the feed materiaL The energy consumption for producing microfine material with a multiple stressing procedure on a particle bed is much lower than that one of a usual milling process. But this procedure needs a classification with a seperation cut at a couple of microns, which is not easy to accomplish.

As a result of the rapid economic growth in Japan, environmental problems have become a national concern in the latter half of the In 1967, the Basic Lair for Environmental Pollution Control was enacted as a fundamental ::olicy in this field. This lair provided compre- hensive guidelines for the action to be taken pollution prevention. The biggest problem n air pollution of those days was that of the sulphur dioxide content of the atmosphere. Based upon the law, the smelters in Japan have struggled hard to solve this difficult problem. Consequently, the ambient SO2 level has been lowered gradually year by year. At present, the ambient SO2 level is nearly equal to that in the atmospheric background. Furthermore, the fixation ratio of sulphur in Japanese copper smelters has attained up to 99.5 per cent.

The Mount Wright gold deposit is located near the town of Ravenswood, ~90 km south of Townsville, in north Queensland. The deposit has been mined by underground methods since 2006. It produced approximately 138 koz Au in the 2011 - 2012 financial year and has a total endowment of approximately 1 Moz Au. To facilitate near mine exploration, a re-logging campaign of 600+ diamond and RC drill holes was recently conducted, resulting in a revised three-dimensional (3D) geological model and improved understanding of the ore controls and the mineralised system. The deposit is within a Permo-Carboniferous breccia complex approximately 350 m diameter and more than 1200 m deep. It consists of early peripheral granite-rich breccia, polymict breccia, a rhyolite spine and a late tuffisite (fine-grained milled breccia) pipe. The rhyolite spine is approximately 60 m + 250 m + at least 1200 m deep and is zoned with massive, flow-banded and breccia phases that are in part gradational with the other breccias. There is extensive sericitic alteration centred on the tuffisite and rhyolite units and fading out into the shallower and peripheral polymict and granite-rich breccias. There is also a broad pattern of metal zoning with elevated Pb-Zn ¦ Ag in the upper 400 m, Au-Cu-Bi below 400 m fading out below ~850 m, and a poorly defined deep Mo-W-Te-Sb anomaly. The majority of the Au ore is between 400 and 850 m below the surface in the rhyolite spine. Below this, Au mineralisation is less coherent, and more localised in the margins of the rhyolite and in the adjacent tuffisite. The developing model is that the ore is not confined to or necessarily directly genetically related to the rhyolite spine, but is driven by other phases of intrusion that also generated the tuffisite pipe. Subsidence profiles over longwalls at West Cliff Colliery (WCC) are predicted by three methods, NCB Emperical Method, Salustowicz's Profile Functions and Superposition of Two Critical Profiles. A method of deriving maximum subsidence using local data is also presented. For the first four longwalls, the results are compared with those from the subsidence surveys conducted during and after the extraction of each longwall. Longwall V has not yet been extracted, so the results are for the predicted subsidence profile. Superposition of two critical profiles is carried out in an attempt to check the principle of superposition. In addition, strata movement above the extracted longwalls is discussed.

The historic city of Charters Towers in North Queensland is underlain by an extensive labyrinth of old mine workings in a large number of flat lying, subparallel, main and cross-cutting cross reefs extending of the order of 5 km along strike and down to a depth of 700 m in parts. These old workings produced over 6.6 million ounces of gold at a grade of over one ounce to the tonne prior to closure in 1920.Citigold is progressing the development of a modern, high productivity, low cost new mine to extract extensions of these reefs as well as other as yet un-mined reefs. To do this it is changing the paradigm for operating in such circumstances. This paper first briefly reviews the setting for the development and then discusses the philosophies and concepts that Citigold is proposing to use, harnessing technology to create a mine that exemplifies more productive and safer mining based on operating in the digital age.The paper addresses how a modern approach is being applied to the planning of a mechanised, deep, narrow vein, hard rock gold mine under a city. It also describes briefly the successful æexperimentationÆ with longhole open stoping methods developed at the companyÆs small underground operation (the Imperial Mine) to the south of the city, which will also be expanded substantially as part of the Charters Towers Gold Project.The paper also addresses the development of new and/or modified technologies in the venture, with the objective of pursuing continuous and autonomous mining methods. The company is adopting a holistic systems approach, addressing people, process and technology in order to efficiently identify and locate the high-grade ore zones and then extract them effectively at a high grade by minimising waste development and haulage, dilution and energy consumption, and with minimal environmental impact.CITATION:Lynch, M and White, B, 2013. The main problem of geostatistical simulations is to reproduce the real characteristics of the mineral deposit when there are few conditioning data. In this case, the geological interpretation, based on structures, geophysics and geological maps, plays the major role in terms of resource evaluation.The paper investigates the use of principal component analysis (PCA) to help classify multiple geostatistical categorical simulations considering the similarity among them and the interpreted model, herein referred as training image (TI).An iron deposit with four lithological facies, in a specific horizontal plane, was used as case study for two-dimensional (2D) simulations. Sequential indicator simulations (SIS) was used to obtain ten equally probable 2D images, which were generated and compared against the interpreted model (TI).In this study, 11 random variables are comprised by the vector of ten SIS realisations plus the training image (TI). The similarity between the TI and each SIS realisation is measured using the angle between the TI and SIS vectors projected in the new coordinate systems (PCA factors). It is possible to order the SIS realisations from the highest to the lowest PCA factor taking into account the TI similarity.The visual analysis of the images shows coherence in the PCA results as a method to measure similarity. This methodology can be used as a post-processing tool to rank simulation results and to select the ones which better represent the prior known geology or to compare the quality of different methods of simulation.

The Witwatersrand Supergroup is host to the world’s largest gold deposits. The location, quantity, grade, continuity and other geological characteristics of a Mineral Resource are either known, estimated from specific geological evidence and knowledge, or interpreted from a well constrained and portrayed geological model. Establishing such a model is an integral part of the evaluation process in the Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) group, and is referred to as a Geoscience Business Model for the mining operations. The geological model established over the years has relied on detailed descriptions of the mineralisation, and understanding of the regional and local geology of the Witwatersrand sediments, in the West Wits and Free State goldfields. The processes of data collection in regard to underground stope and developing mapping, structural and sedimentological mapping, and the geological inputs to mine planning systems are described, together with aspects of drilling, sampling, grade control, and data management. Anglogold Ashanti’s Geoscience Department employs a complex and unique process to generate the Mineral Resource, including a 3D geological structure model of the orebodies which are usually highly faulted, and a robust mineralisation/facies model on which the decisions about domain boundaries are established. A Mineral Resource Inventory System (MRIS) has a dynamic graphic interface to the resource database that is used for compiling the resource statement. It is also used to determine the gold-called-for, as well as short and long-term planning. A unique estimation process using the extensive closely spaced stope face sampling database and the more widely spaced surface drilling information is used in combination in the Macro Co-Kriging estimation. The use of different support sizes in the C0-Kriging process is preceded by the equally unique ‘clusterisation’ and ‘acceptorisation’ procedures by which the data are quality controlled and assured prior to their use in the kriging process. The Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates are classified according to the SAMREC code through a method that ensures that they are compliant, auditable, transparent and reconcilable with previous Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve statements.

Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

Carbon sequestration in planted forests provides an immediately available, low cost option to address the greenhouse impacts of coal mining and coal utilisation in a carbon constrained world. In addition, planted forests also offer the opportunity to address other environmental issues, particularly salinity and loss of biodiversity. Given salinity is characteristically associated with agriculture in the 500 to 700 mm rainfall belt, then where such forests can also produce commercial timber products, they offer the additional opportunity to establish new, diversified rural employment in both timber growing and processing. In the majority of Australian catchments affected by salinity, where rainfall is generally less than the 700 mm limit to conventional forestry, and where groundwater reserves are often saline, the objective of achieving economically viable forestry production presents a significant challenge. In 1996, Saltgrow commenced a collaborative breeding program to combine the salt and stress tolerance of E camaldulensis, with the growth rate, stem form and wood properties of the commercial species, E grandis and E globules. This program aimed to produce trees with the potential for commercial rehabilitation of saline landscapes. Results covering a range of site conditions from SaltgrowÆs network of over 100 trials around Australia are presented. The opportunity for commercial plantations integrated with agriculture in low to medium rainfall areas to address salinity and sustainability will be discussed. In addition, the significant potential for partnerships between land-rich, cash-poor farmers, catchment management authorities seeking to invest in public good projects that enhance environmental sustainability, and major carbon producing industries with either mandated or voluntary requirements to curtail net emissions will also be discussed.

Long Shaft has traditionally been seen as one of the most challenging mines in the Kambalda area with operations having been suspended by the previous owners in 1999. When mining recommenced in October 2002, the current owners (Lightning Nickel) decided that a different approach was required for mining operations in such an aggressive geotechnical environment. This paper describes how Lightning Nickel has successfully and safely operated the Long Shaft complex on a traditional mining approach, which encompasses the key learnings of the previous owners.
