The Effect of Using Different Comminution Procedures on the Flotation of Platinum Group Minerals The use of High Pressure Grinding Rollers (HPGR) has been widely reported to have major benefits in the treatment of minerals such as iron ore and diamonds. To date there have been few investigations into its use in the treatment of ores containing Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs). HPGRs are known to reduce energy consumption and wear costs and improve the throughput in the circuit. In the present investigation the effect of the comparative use of HPGR and conventional crushing in combination with either dry or wet rod milling on the flotation of PGMs was studied using batch flotation. Previous studies of a base metal sulfide ores had shown that either HPGR or conventional crushing followed by dry milling produced the highest grades and recoveries. However in the present study it was observed that a similar treatment produced the worst results and the highest grades and recoveries were obtained for the case of conventional crushing in combination with wet milling. The HPGR showed no advantages in terms of flotation performance and dry milling produced particularly poor flotation results. The results were investigated further using various surface characterisation techniques in order to determine the reason for the decrease in grades and recoveries of platinum when using dry milling and HPGR as opposed to the case for base metal sulfides. The feed and product samples were analysed using ToF-SIMS, XPS and MLA. The paper will propose reasons to explain the different flotation behaviour of the two ore types following the various comminution processes focusing on the surface characteristics of the ores, the particle size distribution and the pulp chemistry.

A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t Au, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5- 40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects. Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26 per cent of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77 per cent. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88 per cent, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au. Re-cyanidation of some of the dried tailings from the initial tests extracted most of the remaining gold giving a tailing assaying 0.5 g/t Au. This indicated that most of the gold was available for dissolution by cyanide. The poor dissolution of gold by cyanidation of the untreated concentrate was attributed to the presence of flotation reagents. It was shown by UV spectrometry that xanthate-containing compounds were present in the solids fraction of the original pulp and that they were partly removed by pre-treatment. MIBC was also present, and dithiophosphate, which was used in the flotation step, was also probably present. The results indicated that the improvement in gold extraction after filtration and oxidation of the original pulp was due to partial removal of the flotation reagents, and illustrates the detrimental effects that residual flotation reagents can have on the extraction of gold by cyanidation of a flotation concentration.

TheFiji Islands are remnants of a once continuous Solomon-Vanuatu-Fiji-Tonga volcanic arc (the Vitiaz arc), located at the boundary between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates. They record a history of: (i)                  arc volcanism the late Eocene to late Miocene, (ii)                an extensive magmatic response to arc rifting (5.5 - 3.0 Ma) during which volcanism was dominated by shoshonitic to tholeiitic basalts, and as rifting continued, (iii)               a transition from arc to intraplate volcanism.   The Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone separates the inactive South Fiji Basin from the actively spreading North Fiji Basin, and has been considered to be a transform zone, almost parallel to the motion vector of the Australian plate. However rocks dredged during the 1993 æAlizeÆ cruise, from along the northern part of the Hunter Ridge are typical arc tholeiites, and therefore demand that subduction has occurred beneath the Hunter Ridge sometime during the last ~5 Ma. The Kadavu Island group, south westernmost Fiji, lies at the north-eastern end of the Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone, and possibly results from oblique subduction of South Fiji Basin oceanic crust, which may have accompanied the anticlockwise rotation of Fiji during opening of the North Fiji Basin. These islands consist dominantly of 3.4 - 0.5 Ma old medium-high K andesites and dacites, with many traits typical of subduction-related volcanics, ie predominance of intermediate members (55 - 65% SiO2) no Fe enrichment, TiO2<1%, and negative Nb-Ta anomalies. These features contrast strongly with volcanics from elsewhere in Fiji around this time, where volcanic centres produced Om-like intraplate olivine basalts. The Kadavu Islands become gradually younger to the southwest, and show a significant decrease in K2O with time. The north easternmost islands (Astrolabe islands) containing the oldest rocks (~3 Ma) have shoshonitic affinities and are considered to be of similar age and composition to the youngest shoshonites found elsewhere in Fiji.

"The use of flotation columns has remained a contentious issue among mill operators. There are those who consider them an essential part of any mineral processing operation, while others consider them a necessary evil, which should only be installed if there is no alternative. Lastly, there are those who believe they should not be installed, no matter how great the perceived benefit.This paper provides an analysis of over 4000 installed flotation columns, contained in the Amec Foster Wheeler flotation database. Changing trends in column flotation use by type, commodity and geographical region are discussed. The effect of changing commodity prices and the China ‘phenomenon’ are reviewed. Special reference is made to the changing face of column flotation in Australia.Of note is the fact that after falling to a 20 year low in installed flotation column capacity in 2014, flotation columns during 2015 went through a resurgence in popularity. This resurgence was in direct contradiction to depressed metal prices and was driven by brownfield optimisations to reduce off-site costs, particularly in base metals. Bioremediation of Acid Mine Water Using Fly Ash and Desulfotomaculum nigrificans One of the major concerns for the mining industry especially after the mine closure is the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD), and its discharge into the environment surrounding the abandoned mines, leading to serious environmental pollution. AMD is usually characterized by high concentration of dissolved metal ions, sulfate and low pH. The efficacy of fly ash was assessed for the removal of metal ions such as iron, zinc and copper as well as sulfate from synthetic acid mine water. Complete removal of ferric and ferrous, 80 per cent of Zn, 83 per cent of Cu and 62 per cent sulfate removal could be achieved, with a concomitant increase in the pH value from 2.3 to 7 using fly ash as an adsorbent under appropriate conditions. The free energy of adsorption of the metal ions onto fly ash was found to be negative, while the adsorption process was endothermic and adhered to the Lagergren pseudo-first order rate equation. Bioremediation studies using a typical sulfate reducing bacterium namely Desulfotomaculum nigrificans, after pre-treatment of the synthetic acid mine water with fly ash, cumulatively resulted in about 94 per cent zinc, 100 per cent copper and 90 per cent sulfate removal. The possible mechanisms of metal ion removal and sulfate reduction from acid mine water utilising Desulfotomaculum nigrificans are discussed.

Waihi Gold Mining Company Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Normandy Mining Limited, operates the Martha gold mine, located in the township of Waihi, New Zealand. The operation, an unincorporated joint venture, comprises Normandy Mining Limited (67.070/0) and Otter Gold Mines (32.94%). Since gold was first discovered at Waihi in 1878, it has formed a key part of the region's economy. In 1909 the Waihi mine was described in a report to Parliament as æthe most important gold mine in Australasia and one of the greatest in the world.Æ That was a record year for production, with 416,813 tons of ore mined and some 1,120 men employed. Today the mine produces up to 1,250,000 tonnes of ore annually, and the project employs some 234 men and women. In 1999 the value of the gold and silver produced ($59 million) made up 47% of Waihi's estimated GDP. Waihi Gold has made significant contributions to the Waihi economy, community and the Hauraki region as a whole. Since the mine was re-opened in 1987, thousands of local people have benefited from the mine. In 1999, consents were granted allowing an extension to the mine life (the Extended Project) and this will result in a further seven years of economic benefits resulting from mining activity. The Company has undertaken extensive consultation throughout project planning, construction, operations and rehabilitation. Ongoing liaison and involvement with all community sectors, including Tangata Whenua and Iwi, local residents, recreational groups and schools remains an integral part of the operation. Throughout the life of the modern Martha Mine, the Company has actively supported the local community in the form of donations, sponsorships, the provision of amenities, and by participating in community events. A well established environmental team exists at the site. Environmental and community performance is measured by an independent five-assessment process, and the Company is committed to achieving excellence through ongoing improvement programmes and staff awareness. When the mine is closed, the open pit area will be transformed into a recreational lake, and the tailings storage facilities will be rehabilitated to become a combination of wetlands, grassed areas and ponds. Resources will be provided by the Mine to ensure the rehabilitated site remains in a safe and self-sustaining, stable condition in perpetuity. The mine is regarded as a showcase on a world standard of how a modem mining operation can successfully coexist with the nearby community.

Static liquefaction is a geotechnical hazard in mine tailings facilities. Soils that are contractive in shear are susceptible to static liquefaction. Tailings facilities are dynamic structures, typically growing in height each year. Dilative tailings may become contractive under increased effective stress. In this paper we show that Cone Penetration Test (CPT) data can be used to estimate the future state of in-place tailings under changes in effective stress. Susceptibility to static liquefaction is typically evaluated with the CPT by using a clean-sand equivalent normalized cone tip resistance (Qtn,cs) or by estimating the state parameter (?). An alternative approach is to evaluate the soil-state using the yield-stress-ratio (YSR = ?’y/?’v0). If the YSR equals one it is on the normal consolidation line and the soil-state is contractive. YSR values greater than three are typically dense of the critical state line (CSL) and the soil-state is dilative. In this paper we review how to calculate Qtn,cs, ?, and ?’y; and how the YSR can be used to screen for contractive soil behaviour. Unlike Qtn,cs and ?, it is very simple to estimate how the YSR will change due to an increase in overburden stress. This YSR approach was evaluated at three locations that saw increases in overburden of 10 m, 20 m, and 25 m. We show that the ?’y calculations are consistent and the increase in effective stress moves the soil state towards looser soil states. Most people are familiar with Euclidean dimensions: zero for a point; one for a line; two for a plane; and three for a volume. Howeverbobjects are not actually Euclidean, but lie somewhere between Euclidean æend-membersÆ with a non-integer fractal (or æfractionalÆ) dimension. The fractal dimension D is a measure of the relative importance of large versus small. Consider the trace of a coastline on a map. It has a fractal dimension (1 =D =2) somewhere between a line (dimension = 1) and a plane (dimension = 2). The more tortuous the coastline, the higher the fractal dimension, and the closer it becomes towards a plane. The concepts of fractals and spatial geometry can be applied to a wide range of geologicaVmining problems as well as than those dealing with space. One commonly quoted fractal relation is the log-log relationship of ore-grade and tonnage. Until recently, we have never been able to define or measure spatial-geometry, but new developments in mathematics have provided a means by which to quantity and apply it to our problems.

In an ironmaking blast furnace (BF), molten slag and hot metal form in the softening-melting (cohesive) zone and then trickle through the coke packed bed before being discharged from the taphole. During their downward flow, there are significant interactions occurring between liquids and other phases, such as gas and packing particles. Overall, the formation, dripping and discharging of these liquid phases, particularly molten slag, have a significant impact on BF operations in terms of furnace permeability, fuel consumption, process stability, product quality and ultimately, productivity. Hence, understanding the liquid flow behaviour in the BF lower zone is critical for designing optimal operations. In the current investigation, the flow behaviour of slag droplets was investigated at a mesoscopic level using a combined numerical and physical modelling approach. The interaction between slag and carbonaceous materials was studied using sessile drop wetting experiments, slag flow through a funnel and a high temperature packed bed and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) modelling technique. Molten slag flow and counter-current gas-slag flow in the packed bed was investigated in terms of superficial gas velocity, slag properties and packing structure. The gas-slag flow behaviour at a mesoscopic level was numerically visualised, with gas velocity gradually increased up to the flooding point. The strong interaction between gas and slag was uniquely identified, which can cause localised slag flooding as well as gas channelling. Detailed information concerning the effect on slag holdup distribution, residence time and flow patterns of wettability, slag properties and bed structure were obtained. The current investigation highlights the significant role of research at a mesoscopic level in understanding macroscopic slag flow behaviour. Gas channelling, which is a critical phenomenon in a packed bed with counter-current gas-slag flow, is predicted. It can be speculated that significant gas channelling in the BF can inevitably occur prior to operational limits being reached. In the BF process, the formation of permanent gas channelling and large slag rivulets should be avoided to maintain appropriate contact between phases and hence, furnace permeability.

In January 1998 Sydney Water Corporation formed an Alliance with construction contractor Transfield, and engineering consultants Connell Wagner and Montgomery Watson, to design and construct the Northside Storage Tunnel. The project is part of WaterPlan 21, Sydney WaterÆs strategy for cleaning up the harbours, bays, rivers and beaches within its business area. WaterPlan 21 is an integral part of the NSW GovernmentÆs $3.1 billion Waterways Package which establishes targets and initiatives for sustainable wastewater management within NSW. The project is being delivered under an Alliance Agreement, which has a number of non-traditional features in terms of partnering, management principles and design and construct. Construction began in mid-1998 and is on target to meet the completion deadline for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

This paper presents an analysis of the production data for the period 1861 - 1953 from hydrothermal gold-silver deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield. To directly compare the metal content of the deposits a figure of ounces of gold equivalents (oz gold equivalent) is calculated from the value of the gold-silver bullion produced from each deposit. Frequency distributions for ore tonnage and oz gold equiv. appear to be lognormal and show a high proportion of very small deposits, with 90 per cent less than 100 000 tonnes. The deposits when plotted in order of size fall roughly on a smooth curve which suggests that the size distribution is not random. A large proportion (68 per cent) of the total gold-silver extracted from the Hauraki district was contained in the largest deposit û Waihi. A technique used for predicting undiscovered mineral resources is ZipfÆs law, which relates the size of an item to its rank order. The figures for ounce gold equivalents from the major Hauraki deposits fit ZipfÆs law remarkably well. Taking Waihi at 6.8 million oz gold equivalent as the rank one deposit, Thames is number five and Karangahake number seven. A Zipf plot indicates that down to rank 100 (68 000 oz gold equivalent) only 28 per cent of the total gold-silver resource in the Hauraki Goldfield has been extracted. A further 72 per cent or 25.4 million oz gold equivalent, including the deposits of rank 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10, are undiscovered. However, since some deposits will be deeply buried under younger rocks and others will be under the sea only a proportion of the total resource will be discoverable.

The East China Mesozoic metallogenic province hosts the world’s largest resources of tungsten, tin, molybdenum, antimony and bismuth, with additional important gold, silver, mercury, lead, zinc, copper, uranium and iron deposits. These deposits form several giant metallogenic belts, including South China, Middle-Lower Yangtze River Valley, East Qinling-Dabie, eastern North China Craton and North-east China. Available data demonstrate that these metallogeneic belts are the products of episodic magmatic and related hydrothermal events between ~240 and ~80 Ma. Each magmatic-hydrothermal episode has produced distinct deposit assemblages that can be readily linked to the Mesozoic geodynamic evolution of East China, involving continental collision between the North China Craton and South China Block at 220–200 Ma, oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate under the Eurasian continent at ca 170–135 Ma and post-subduction extension and lithospheric delamination at 130–80 Ma. Metallogeny in north-eastern China is more complicated due to prolonged tectonic evolution related to southward subduction of the Mongolian–Okhotsk plate and westward oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate, and subsequent continental collision and post-collisional processes.CITATION:Mao, J W, Xie, G Q and Cheng, Y B, 2015. Northparkes Mines is a joint venture between Rio Tinto and the Sumitomo group and is operated by Rio Tinto to produce copper concentrate from ore sourced from open cut and underground. Underground ore is mined with an owner operator workforce using the block cave method from the E26 deposit, with the first lift of the cave now completed. Development of the Lift 2 block cave commenced in March 2001 using a contract workforce. The Lift 2 Project required the mining of 14 700 m of decline and lateral development to establish a new mining horizon at the 9450 level and to develop two new conveyor declines. Also included in the scope was the excavation of a Crusher chamber to house the jaw-gyratory crusher. This paper describes the excavation of the hydroset chamber and orepass that sit immediately underneath the Lift 2 Crusher chamber. It includes risk assessment, planning, development of method statements and standard operating procedures, through to the excavation of the orepass and the installation of ground support in seismically active ground. There was a major ground failure in the backs of the conveyor feeder chamber during its excavation, which affected the excavation of the orepass due to its proximity to the breakthrough site.

The mechanical properties of rock samples of identical lithologicalcomposition may vary significantly due to existence of materialdiscontinuities. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the effect of material discontinuities on rock sample mechanical properties. The investigations consisted of detecting discontinuities, observing the failure mechanisms during uniaxial compressive strength tests, and analysing of the factors affecting the strength. A non-destructive testing method has been adopted to assist in thedetection of discontinuities. Laboratory testing proved that fractures leading to failures initiated on the detected discontinuities. The location, orientation, size, density and extent of the discontinuities contribute to different modes of failure and these affect the mechanical parameters of rock samples. Four modes of failure were distinguished for hard and brittlecylindrical rock samples. These modes were referred to as simple shear failure, multiple shear failure, multiple fracturing and vertical splitting. To evaluate the effect of discontinuities on mechanical parameters, the ratio of uniaxial compressive to tensile (Brazilian) strength was calculated and analysed for the different modes of failure. It was found that the value of the ratio depended on the mode of sample failure. The lowest value of the ratio was observed for shear mode of failure and the highest for vertical splitting mode of failure.

In the heavy minerals industry wet high intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) are widely applied for primary magnetic separation of magnetic minerals and non-magnetic minerals. This piece of equipment is well known for its robustness to handle a wide range of feed conditions and still produce stable product qualities and yields. A heavy mineral production plant aimed to increase production through their WHIMS plant containing 11 duties and 26 units. Instead of adding new units an alternative approach was followed to firstly maximise the efficiency of the current circuit and secondly to consider possible reconfiguration of the circuit to produce additional product tons for minimal capital investment. In order to characterise the current circuit’s efficiency, identify pockets of excellence and determine the areas for improvement the whole circuit was surveyed several times and mineral mass balances were drawn up.This paper aims to: discuss the modelling process of the WHIMS circuit,explain the calibration and validation process followed to ensure the accuracy, anddemonstrate the sensitivity analysis performed on the different options. From this analysis an efficiency criteria was developed to compare different circuit configurations that enabled the production plant personnel to make an informed decision on the way forward.

Owing to improvements in computer capacity, it is now possible to undertake fully coupled or partially coupled, three-dimensional (3D) hydromechanical Finite Element (FE) simulation of mines, including explicit representations of large numbers of discontinuities. The analysis requires fewer assumptions than uncoupled analysis or two-dimensional (2D) analysis, but may require a change in how hydrological data is collected. The way hydrological data is incorporated in stability assessment and the approach to uncertainty in hydrological information also requires discussion. The current procedures for this type of analysis are discussed, along with some practical difficulties and teachings from early applications. A work flow for integration of 3D hydromechanical modelling with pit planning and some considerations for the management of uncertain data are also proposed.

The Shagou deposit is located along NE-trending faults within the high-grade metamorphic basement of the Xiong’er Terrane in the Qinling orogenic belt. It is a large Ag-Pb-Zn deposit hosted in the Taihua Supergroup and has proven reserves of 1.54 Mt of ore with grades of 767 g/t Ag, 13.24 per cent Pb and 4.31 per cent Zn. The hydrothermal ore-forming process can be divided into early quartz-pyrite, middle quartz-polymetallic sulfides and late quartz-carbonate stages. Four types of fluid inclusions (ie pure carbonic, carbonic, pure aqueous and aqueous) can be distinguished in quartz. Fluid inclusion, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur isotope systematics indicate that the ore-forming fluids are initially deeply sourced metamorphic water with meteoric water gradually mixed in the later stages. Sulfur isotope data show that the ore-forming fluids originated from both the Taihua Supergroup and the sedimentary successions of the Guandaokou and Luanchuan Groups (CSC) located to the south of the Machaoying Fault. A genetic model of the Shagou deposit is proposed as follows: CSC subducted northward along the Machaoying Fault beneath the Xiong’er Terrane during the Mesozoic collision between the North China Craton and South China Block. Subsequent dehydration resulted in the devolatilisation of fluids rich in CO2. These fluids migrated upwards, reacted with the Taihua Supergroup and formed the Shagou deposit.CITATION:Han, J-S, Yao, J-M and Chen, H, 2015.
