Some Otago quartz veins display spectacular open-space filling textures indicative of shallow formation. Fluid inclusions in some such veins show that fluid immiscibility occured before or during mineral deposition. This immiscibility or 'boiling' occured at depths ranging from about 3 km to within as little as about 100 metres of the paleo-surface. Temperatures of mineralization range from 190 - 250¦C. Metals deposited in these veins include: Au(+Ag), Hg, Sb and As. Hydrothermal alteration is confined to minor silicifation of immediate wall-rock schist, less than about two metres from the veins. These veins have some similarities to classical epithermal systems elsewhere in the world, although wall-rock alteration is much less developed in Otago. From analogy to these classical epithermal systems, it is speculated that gold mineralisation may be found beneath Otago stibnite and cinnabar localities.

In the estimation of reserves the known values of the variables of interest from surrounding drill holes are used to compute or estimate the unknown value of the orebody over a given region or at a given point of interest. The classical means of doing this are: 1. The Polygonal Method û where the region is divided into polygons centred on bore holes, each variable is then assumed to have constant value over each polygon. 2. Inverse distance methods, where the variable is assumed to vary linearly with the distance between the known values of the drill holes. 3. Inverse distance squared method û a quadratic variation is assumed for the variables between the bore holes.

Though many mining and mineral processing companies have embraced the principles of sustainable development (SD), there is still a significant challenge of applying these in a practical sense, either in plant design or as part of day-to-day operations. The high-level nature of sustainability concepts often do not translate easily into workable activities or business case evaluations. This makes it difficult for engineers and company decision makers to understand whether their actions are making a contribution to sustainable development and a long-term business case. While several organisations have their own SD tools that can, to a degree, help identify these opportunities, they are largely ad-hoc and lack the necessary thoroughness to defensibly value these opportunities. Recognising these serious shortcomings, the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) has undertaken the development and trial applications of SUSOP« (SUStainable OPerations), a new concept that is somewhat analogous to HAZOP and the wider risk and safety frameworks used in projects today. The key goal of the SUSOP« research project is to produce a holistic, systematic and rigorous framework for project development, capturing, recording and evaluating SD opportunities and constraints against a chosen sustainability structure (eg Five Capitals). SUSOP« is being developed through an iterative process with input from research institutions and engineering companies. This integrated approach ensures that SUSOP«, in its final form, will have the academic rigour and industry realism required to assist the resource sector contribute to societal sustainability by embedding the concepts and processes into the design and operation of their assets in a meaningful and practical manner. SUSOP« has created much traction with both engineering companies and mining and minerals operators. This conference paper presents an overview of the SUSOP« framework and its current suite of processes as well as highlighting, through practical case studies, its capability to incorporate SD considerations at different phases of an engineering project's development.

In an earlier LCA study, the authors showed that the electricity consumption of the electric furnaces used in the production of the ferronickel and ferrochrome feedstocks made significant contributions towards the Gross Energy Requirement (GER) of stainless steel production, on a æcradle-to-gateÆ basis. Given the relatively low efficiencies associated with electrical power generation, substantial reductions in the GER for stainless steel production could be anticipated if more direct use of thermal energy was made in the ferronickel and ferrochromium smelting stages.In view of these findings, a follow-up study was undertaken to investigate the likely environmental benefits of using bath smelting processes for the production of ferronickel and ferrochromium compared to the traditional rotary kiln-electric furnace processes, but still utilising the electric furnace process for stainless steel production. The METSIM process simulation software package was used to set up models of the two bath smelting processes and provide process energy requirements that were incorporated into the LCA. The environmental impacts considered in the LCA were greenhouse (Global Warming Potential, GWP) and acid rain gas (Acidification Potential, AP) emissions and solid waste emissions.The results of the study showed that the bath smelting route reduced the GER for ferronickel production by about 37 per cent over the traditional route, which translated to about a 21 per cent reduction in the GER for stainless steel. The corresponding reduction for ferrochromium was about half that for ferronickel, and when combined with the ferronickel result gave a 25 per cent reduction in the GER for stainless steel production. Similar reductions were also observed for the GWP and to a lesser extent the AP for both feedstocks, as all primary energy inputs were essentially fossil fuel based. Substantial reductions in solid waste emissions were also indicated for the direct use of ores in smelting. By utilising bath smelting processes for the production of the ferronickel and ferrochromium feedstocks, stainless steelÆs suitability for meeting many of the goals necessary for sustainable development, already recognised because of its particular properties, would be even further enhanced.

The South American mining community leads the world in recognition and adoption of the latest grinding mill relining technologies. Clearly this region has recognised the benefits of improved relining performance as a defence against the Global Economic Crisis. Five of the six RUSSELL TWIN 8 Mill Relining Systems, ordered to date, are either operating or being manufactured for South American mine sites. The sixth is for Sino IronÆs Cape Preston Project in Western Australia. This paradigm shift, towards very short relining times, aims at displacing mill relining activities from the critical path of concentrator maintenance shutdown schedules. The first uses of the RUSSELL TWIN 8 Mill Relining System have seen some of the highest semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill new liner placement rates ever observed by Russell Mineral Equipment (RME), as would be expected with two, independent Machines working simultaneously in the one mill. The liner replacement rate, averaged over the whole reline is good (27 per cent improvement over single Machine System in the same mill) but short of full potential. This modest result can be attributed to reline crews unfamiliarity with RUSSELL TWIN 8 System operation. This paper compares a sample of conventional (single machine) RME Mill Relining System performance data with one ædouble headÆ mill liner handler by others. Early performance of EscondidaÆs new RUSSELL TWIN 8 System performance is then compared with recent single machine data from Escondida, immediately prior to RUSSELL TWIN 8 commissioning. RME and Escondida look to constantly improving RUSSELL TWIN 8 System performance as full operational familiarity is achieved. The preparation of this paper revealed a need to develop a global industry standard for mill relining data collection. A web based platform to develop data collection templates is also discussed in Appendix 1.

Sheeted vein gold deposits are characterised by multiple subparallel veins and often free milling gold. Variability in gold grade and recovery parameters are enhanced by poorly designed sampling and test work protocols. Poor quality samples generally equate to an enhanced nugget effect. A sample can be described as being representative when it results in acceptable levels of bias and precision. Total sampling variability can be quantified by the relative sampling variance, which measures the total empirical sampling variance influenced by the heterogeneity of the lot being sampled under the current sampling / test work protocol. Effort should be made to minimise the relative sampling variance through Theory of Sampling (TOS) and quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) application. This contribution reports on a case study that exemplifies how high-quality grade and recovery data can be gained from a well-designed and planned drilling, sampling and test work program, followed by bulk sampling. Results across historical resource drilling, geometallurgical drilling, laboratory assay / test work, geometallurgical modelling and a bulk sampling/pilot processing study are reconciled. The orogenic gold deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Orogenic gold deposits are typically quartz vein deposits formed in fault and shear systems at crustal levels within and above the brittle ductile transition zone, at depths of 3 12 km and temperatures from 200¦ to 400¦C. In New Zealand, orogenic gold deposits are found in regionally metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age. The deposits in Paleozoic rocks include those at Golden Blocks in Northwest Nelson, Lyell and Reefton on the West Coast, and Preservation Inlet in Fiordland. Quartz veins are developed along shear zones that dip steeply and generally strike parallel to the axes of folding in the greywacke and argillite/slate host rocks, although most are discordant to bedding. The lodes are typically less than 1 m wide and extend an average 200 m horizontally and vertically, but the Birthday Reef at Blackwater, Reefton, the largest quartz vein deposit in Paleozoic rocks, averages 60 cm in width and was mined over a strike length of 1070 m, and to a depth of 830 m. Disseminated gold occurs adjacent to the quartz lodes at Globe-Progress and some other Reefton deposits. The deposits in Mesozoic rocks are hosted in schist of Otago and Marlborough, and schist and greywacke of the Southern Alps. The lodes are typically lensoidal, less than 1 m wide and localised along single or multiple parallel shear zones that generally dip steeply, and are discordant to the schist foliation and bedding. A notable exception is Macraes, where the lodes are developed in the semi-concordant, low angle Hyde Macraes Shear Zone that has a strike length greater than 25 km.

Due to the steep geo-thermal gradient in Bowen Basin area, as underground coalmines reach increased depths of extraction, the Bulk Air Cooling (BAC) requirements will increase as opposed to cooling the workplace using the ventilation means alone. One such mine has already been using a 4 MW surface BAC plant for the last six years to manage the working temperatures with reduced cooling efficiency as the mine expands. Due to the horizontal nature of the longwall mine layout, distances from the working face to intake shafts are rapidly expanding to over 6 km as opposed to the vertical mine layout of a hard rock mine. To improve the positional cooling efficiency, reduced panel pressure differentials, improved rib emission gas management, and intake dust management, small diameter intake shafts were located on the inbye end of production panels and halfway up the development panels with localised mobile small BAC plants. The Homer Tunnel is located in a remote area of the South Island of New Zealand and carries large numbers of tourists to Milford Sound through an avalanche prone area. The tunnel is 1280 m long with a steep ten per cent unidirectional grade descending to the west. Construction of the tunnel began in the 1930s and was completed to a nominal 6 m width in 1954. In 1996, two passing bays were stripped-out to accommodate bi-directional flow of tourist coaches. During all phases of construction and widening there have been episodes of strain bursting.The condition of the tunnel and standard of internal services is below current international practice, principally in terms of; in-tunnel air quality, fire life safety, ground support, and road safety. A number of near-miss events have occurred involving coach fires on the approaches and inside the tunnel. The national road authority, NZTA, is considering a substantial investment to improve amenity and safety of the tunnel.This paper describes the rationale for the proposed upgrade works and the investigations undertaken to enable that design. A holistic approach to road tunnel safety has been adopted that balances the key interrelated safety drivers, namely; tunnel lining, traffic operations, ventilation, power supply and egress while ensuring continuity of safe access to Milford Sound.

The Porgera Gold Mine, located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, has produced over 5 million ounces of Au, since its opening in late 1990. The deposit is located within Upper Cretaceous Papuan Platform sediments approximately 25 km south of the Lagaip Fault, and is spatially and temporally associated with the 6 Ma alkaline Porgera Intrusive Complex.

Alluvial platinum was recovered during gold mining operations in Maud Creek, a tributary of the Howard River. Average electron probe analyses give Pt 88.75, Fe 5.27, Ir 0.70, Os 1.06, Pd 0.34, Ru 0.14, Rh 1.29, Cu 1.06. Rare grains of a Pt-Fe-Cu alloy are also present and an unusual feature of all grains is the relatively high rhodium content which finds expression in segregations of rhodium arsenide, cherepanovite. Platinum is found in the Orepuki area of Southland, where it is probably partly derived from the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex. Rocks of the Rotoroa Complex, similar to those of the Longwood Complex, form bedrock in Maud Creek and are possibly the source of the Howard platinum. Alternatively, it might be derived by glacial transport from the Matakitaki ultramafic block 30 km to the southwest. Origin from the Rotoroa rocks is preferred as, if the Matakitaki rocks are part of the Dun Mountain Ophiolites, they might be expected to contain osmiridium rather than platinum. The ratio Pt:Ir-Os has been widely used to distinguish low Pt:Ir-Os ophiolitic from high Pt:Ir-Os gabbroic assemblages. Mafic complexes such as Longwoods, Darran, Rotoroa, and Riwaka might be expected to show similar high Pt:Ir-Os ratios and be targets for platinum exploration. Detrital platinum examined from the Parapara area, Golden Bay is mainly osmiridium, with rare grains of rutheniridosmine, very similar in composition to that found in concentrates from the Kaniere dredge, West Coast.

Fresh air intake in an underground coal mine is of critical importance to the occupational health and safety of workers due to the dynamic, confined and dangerous nature of the mining environment. In most coal mines in South Africa, belt road is not separated from the fresh air intake to the sections. Intake air to coal production faces generally contains dust generated by conveyor belts, transfer points and travelling roads. Long roadways (up to a few kilometres in some of the existing mines) to the coal sections are involved in the ventilation circuits of individual sections. This leads to a progressive increase in the dust levels in the intake fresh air and thus high dust levels in the air delivered to the working sections downstream. In the process of reducing worker exposure to dust in the face area, attention to the monitoring of fresh intake air is generally given a low priority. This paper summarises the intake dust levels measured in selected South African underground coal mining sections over the past five years and its use as a parameter in assessing worker exposure to dust through a newly developed model called the Dust Exposure Level Index (DELI). Based on the measured data of the South African coal mines, the average section intake dust level was 0.78 mg/m3. Approximately 60 per cent of the samples collected for the study have exceeded the 0.5 mg/m3. The intake dust level measured at a longwall face was much higher than in the CM headings. The measured section intake dust levels furnish the South African coal mining industry with the latest depiction of the level of face area dust contamination due to the intake air. Further, this paper demonstrates the use of intake dust level as a parameter in estimating exposure levels of workers, as it clearly plays as a corner stone in effective control of exposure to face area respirable dust. It must be borne in mind that intake dust is a base level to the mine worker exposed to dust without carrying out any additional work in the section. If the intake air is seriously contaminated by airborne respirable dust; then the exposure of the workforce in the section will constantly be elevated by that background dust level.

Separation of Iron Particles from Banded Haematite Quartzite (BHQ) Ore by Selective Magnetic Coating The separation of fine iron particles from banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) has been studied using selective magnetic coating. The BHQ ore assays as 38.9 per cent Fe, 42.5 per cent SiO2 and 1.0 per cent Al2O3. Mineralogically, the ore contains hematite and quartz as the major mineral phases where as goethite and magnetite is present in minor entities. Natural magnetite of very fine size and oleate-magnetite in colloidal form, prepared synthetically in the laboratory are used as the coating material on the surface of hematite particles. The selective coatings of oleate-magnetite on BHQ surfaces followed by magnetic separation studies have indicated that, it is possible to achieve 62.3 per cent Fe with 8.5 per cent SiO2 at 85.4 per cent iron recovery. The recovery of iron values is found to be superior in comparison to the conventional magnetic separation techniques. The selectivity of coating for enhancing the magnetic response of iron particles is achieved by controlling the surface properties of the particle via electrokinetic potential adjustment by controling pH and addition of oleate-magnetite. In the separation process, the effects of pH, magnetic intensity and addition of oleate-magnetite are studied to achieve the maximum grade and recovery of iron values. The optimum separation is observed at pH of 7.5, oleate-magnetite concentration of 0.25 ml/g of BHQ ore and a magnetic intensity of around 0.8 Tesla. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infra-red spectroscopy (IR) and UV-visible spectroscopic studies strongly suggest preferential coating of magnetite on hematite surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies have brought out the semi-quantitative features of BHQ ore. The recovery of iron values from a lean grade ore such as BHQ is carried out looking into the future needs of this ore in India for iron and steel making.

Advanced Jig Separation of Shredded Plastics The authors have reported that the RETAC jig is very useful in separating relatively low density particles such as plastics, and demonstrated that highly efficient jig separation of plastic components in discarded office machines is possible in pilot-scale tests. To further improve the separation efficiency, a hybrid jig (RETAC jig with air bubbler under the particle bed) which can separate plastics having similar specific gravities using differences in wettability produced by a pretreatment, and a reverse jig (modified RETAC jig for plastics lighter than water) were developed. This paper reviews the separation of shredded plastics using advanced jig separation technology (RETAC, hybrid and reverse jigs). Wettability control of the plastics for the advanced jig separation is also reported.

The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of MgCO3 was investigated using isothermal experiments performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer under a nitrogen atmosphere at 380¦, 400¦, 450¦ and 480¦C. The weight loss data as a function of time were modified to give the fraction that reacted (ß) and the rate of reaction (dß/dt) vs. time (t). Kinetic analysis of the experimental results, using three different methods, showed that diffusion predominates the MgCO3 decomposition over the investigated temperature range, with the data being best fitted by JanderÆs equation ([1−(1−ß)1/3]2=kt). The activation energy was estimated by Arrhenius plots using both the initial reaction rates and rate constants from fitting the above equation. The values estimated were 27.1 and 171.4 kJ/mol respectively.

The iron ore industry in Australia has, in recent years, experienced an unprecedented growth phase. But now that major expansions are moving into the operation phase, new challenges have emerged. Whereas initial planning may involve a few modelling studies, ongoing performance monitoring and improvement requires a different, more intense approach. This is especially important in the face of changing factors such as commodity prices, exchange rates and labour markets. Response time is key. As a mining operation proceeds from initial planning to daily operations, the time window for analysis shortens, going from months to weeks to days as the business matures.Simulation models and analysis tools are typically built and run by specialists in the planning phase, but then what? The investment has been made, but realised only once. What if further analysis could be carried out in-house, re-using existing models using up-to-the-minute data? Can we create virtual mines that run in parallel to live operations that allow computers to identify areas of a value creation or operational improvement? These questions can be answered by the innovative application of big data, simulation and predictive analytics. The future will be having this all integrated into one platform that offers, for the first time, an opportunity for non-experts to apply existing modelling and analysis assets – combined with live data – to deliver support for continuous improvement, and the ability to respond quickly to external changes in the best possible way, before they become big problems. These techniques will represent a step change in the ability for operations to maximise efficiency and will underpin the intelligent operations of the future.
