Eyewash safety showers located in remote hot environments may be unsafe to use due to excess water temperature and high risk levels of water borne bacteria such as Legionella. Australian Standard AS 4775 specifies that dispensed water shall be bacteria free and have a maximum temperature of 37.8°C. Legionnaires disease is contracted when water aerosols containing Legionella bacteria are inhaled.Laboratory tests show 30 to 70 times more aerosols are generated by showers operating at 38°C than with showers operating at 25°C. Furthermore, excess temperature in flushing water can cause burn injuries leading to hospitalisation, skin grafts and/or permanent scarring. Excess temperature also increases the rate of reaction to corrosive substances, opens pores in the skin to allow greater dermal penetration and can cause dizziness and fainting by dilating blood vessels and reducing blood pressure.CITATION:Challenor, H A, 2017. Reliable evaluation of in situ stress is an important phase in the analysis and design of underground excavations, particularly for evaluating the stability of underground structures to prevent failure or collapse. A technique for the estimation of the full stress tensor based on acoustic emission (the Kaiser effect) is being developed and trialed at the WA School of Mines. The result obtained compare well with the standard over-coring method. The advantages of the technique are that it is relatively cheap, non-time consuming and is applicable to in situ stress measurements at depth in remote regions.

Since 2003, there has been an unprecedented growth in the demand for engineering, technical and project services in the mineral industries. This demand for services became evident in Australia earlier than many other markets and has since spread globally. This growth has created significant issues for the strategic direction and planning by the service provider. Such strategic questions include:- how fast to grow, how to recruit, train and integrate new staff, what market sectors to service, the selection of targeted customer sectors and managing strategic growth with short term demands and commercial reality. These factors are discussed using in depth experiences and examples that illustrate these strategic approaches. The relevance of this new industry environment to New Zealand services will be highly discussed.

The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.

Future metal prices play a direct role in both the economic evaluation and short to medium planning of a mine scheduling sequence. It is difficult to predict with accuracy the future price of volatile metal commodities, however, it is possible to fix some future metal price, outside of long term contracts by the selling of futures contracts through a commodities exchange. The futures contract represents a fixed amount of a specified quality of a commodity for future delivery at a predetermined price. Several different types of hedging are possible, one in particular which is best suited for mining companies. There are relative advantages and disadvantages when trading in futures contracts and particular reference is made to gold contracts on the Sydney Futures Exchange.

Thank you for this opportunity to address your conference on 'The role of coal in the New Zealand energy market'. New Zealand's energy market has, in common with much of New Zealand, undergone major change following the market reforms of the Labour Government. As far as the energy sector is concerned this change has been for the better, as it has created for the first time in a very long time a 'true economic market' for energy in New Zealand. This is in marked contrast to the previous regime where: ò Electricity was state operated, subsidised and cross subsidised. ò Oil was imported and subject to a raft of taxes and duties. ò Coal produced by state mines was priced by cabinet committee, based on other energy prices rather than on the costs of production and delivery of the energy product. Today, with the establishment of the SOE's we have a market of competitive supply, where the customer has the choice of energy with prices based on the true costs of production and delivery. This can only be good for the customer as the cost is now based on the real costs of production, not on political whim. So where does coal fit in this brave new world of free market energy supplies? Well, opportunity, they say, knocks but once.

A detailed examination of carbonic acid leaching of crude iron-containing magnesia derived from Savage River magnesite shows that the rate and extent of magnesium and iron dissolution are affected by the slake time, leaching temperature, carbon dioxide pressure, pulp density and rate of agitation. In order to produce high-purity magnesia from the leachate by precipitation and calcination, the optimum leaching conditions, which are those that yield maximum magnesium and minimum iron dissolution, have to be a compromise in terms of the above parameters. For example, iron dissolution can be limited by leaching at an elevated temperature (-45°C), but because the maximum concentration of magnesium biearbonate decreases rapidly with an increase in temperature, it is necessary to use a low pulp density (-2 per cent solids) in order to achieve an acceptable degree of magnesium dissolution.Evidence is obtained that iron dissolution involves the formation of a soluble ferric bicarbonate complex that decomposes at elevated temperatures. The extent of iron dissolution is much higher than might be expected and it is probably because the original magnesite contains siderite in solid solution with the magnesite; on calcination, the hematite whieh is formed is in a very finely divided condition and hence more reactive.

The geochemical properties of Kaiata Mudstone and Brunner Coal Measures are evaluated in order to determine their suitability for placement at the proposed Cypress and existing Stockton mines. Correct scheduling of this waste material is needed in order to prevent sulfide oxidation and the generation of acid rock drainage. The Kaiata Mudstone has both acid generating and acid neutralizing properties. Results from this study and previous research from Kingett Mitchell Ltd (2003), indicate that within the Kaiata Mudstone sulphur content decreases with distance away from the Brunner Coal Measure/Kaiata Mudstone contact, while calcium carbonate content increases; sulphur values range from 0.33 to 4.23 wt %; and the acid neutralizing capacity ranges from 0 to 10.4 wt %. The Brunner Coal Measures have a low capacity to neutralize acid and sulphur content is variable ranging from 0.25 to 3.5 wt %. Appropriate control measures are therefore needed for the Brunner Coal Measures and any Kaiata Mudstone within close proximity to its contact. Tests have been undertaken to develop a rapid field or laboratory procedure to define the potentially acid-forming from the non-acid-forming Kaiata material. Results indicate that paste pH, Net Acid Generation (NAG) and Carbonate Bomb tests are suitable. Results from the Carbonate Bomb Test show a strong relationship with the Acid Neutralizing Capacity (ANC) and the Net Acid Production Potential (NAPP), indicating that this method may efficiently determine non-acid forming material in the field within fifteen minutes. Ongoing research includes kinetic column and shake extraction tests. These tests will quantify what trace elements could be leached from the waste rock and provide information on the usefulness of alkaline producing products such as Bauxsol, Limestone and Cement Kiln Dust.

The interaction of flotation collectors with sulfide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulfides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidised to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidised xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulfides is discussed briefly.

After relining one of two blast furnaces and enlarging its sinter plant in 2009, BlueScope radically restructured its Port Kembla steelworks operation in 2011, shutting a blast furnace and halving its total production. This drastic move in response to unprecedented raw material prices relative to achievable steel prices was like that of many integrated steelmakers worldwide facing similar challenges. The 2011 restructure also saw major changes in the amount and type of iron ores and ferrous burdens purchased, and a fundamental reappraising of ‘value’ in iron ores. This paper outlines the changes to raw materials purchases from 2011 to 2017, how BlueScope has responded to the changes in pricing and raw materials quality, the effect on the sintering and blast furnace processes at Port Kembla resulting from higher gangue content, some of the broad technical and economic challenges faced by steelmakers confronted with lower quality iron ores and how BlueScope is meeting those challenges.CITATION:Di Giorgio, N, Bennett, A, Osborne, B and Chew, S, 2017. To date, Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL) has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in AMIRA International LimitedÆs (the mineral industries research association) AMIRA P9 project, to develop models for several Anglo Base Metals flotation plants. Further detailed analysis of the data which was generated has realised additional benefits: the various hydrodynamic measurements were useful in comparing cell operating parameters to literature sources, while the laboratory batch tests give an indication of plant recovery potential. A detailed cell by cell mass balance, which is a critical feature of the modelling process, is in its own right a valuable diagnostic tool. Several examples of how this can be used to highlight potential improvement areas in the plants are presented. The added understanding gained from sampling each cell is clear and this is shown to more than compensate for any necessary modifications needed to allow sampling to take place. The model fitting process generates an ore floatability distribution, which is used in the JK SimFloat simulation package to assess the effect of possible changes to each of the circuits. An example of an actual circuit change as a result of this approach is presented. The current limitations of and the potential improvements to the modelling process are also briefly discussed. Future models will be extended to include enhanced size and mineralogical information where the basic models suggest this has potential to improve understanding.

Higher bed height up to 680 mm, including 30 mm hearth layer of sized return sinter and high suction below the grate bars up to 1400 mm WG have resulted in increasing the productivity to a level of 33 t/m2/day and reduced coke rate to a level of 46 kg/tonne sinter. The ferro-wastes like blue dust, flue dust, mill scale, collection from dust catcher and gas cleaning plant, etc have been successfully added in charge mix to produce quality sinters. In this paper, brief description of the work done at Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR) in last few years and two case studies are discussed including the successful development of pan sintering units.

Drilling at Ipswich during the last twelve years by the Queensland Department of Mines has proved large quantities of reserves which have assured the security of the field for many years to come. This is perhaps the greatest contribution to the development of the field since its discovery in 1827.The drilling campaign commenced in 1950 and by the end of 1961 comprised 242 holes totalling 180,220 ft.Intersections of formations and seams, accompanied by detailed surface mapping, led to more precise knowledge of the geology of the field than was previously possible, and clarified many problems of correlation. Productive formations are part of the Middle Triassic Ipswich Coal Measures, a 4,300 ft sequence of fresh-water sediments with some interbedded volcanics. They are overlain by the Upper Triassic Bundamba Group and the Lower Tertiary Booval Group.Reserves disclosed by drilling amount to 171,487,000 tons, comprising 109,407,000 tons "measured" and 62,080,000 tons "indicated". The security of these reserves encouraged many collieries to instal modern efficient mining machinery and washing plants.The climax of recent development of the resources of the field will be the commissioning in 1966 of a £33 million 360 MW power station in the Swanbank district which will consume 14 million tons of coal during its 30 year life and will have a peak demand of some 20,000 tons per week.Drilling is continuing and is expected to prove additional reserves which will justify further development of the field.INTRODUCTIONUntil 1949 there had been no concerted effort to test systematically the resources of the whole Ipswich field. Fifty two known holes totalling 30,500 ft had been drilled, eight of them by the Department of Mines, but because of poor core recovery and inadequate records most of them were of little use in a comprehensive assessment.Development of the field was being retarded by uncertainty regarding reserves and by the general state of the coal mining industry. A simulation and animation model was constructed for the Stockton Coal Mine. This mine is located in the north western area of the South Island of New Zealand. This model was used to study the optimum size of the stockpile areas whilst achieving the correct product coal qualities. The model evaluated the impact on stockpile size and product coal qualities for both bulk and selective mining. The effect of modifying the amount of known clean coal quality was also investigated. The software used was GPSS/H« for the simulation and Proof Professional« for the animation. From the study, it was recommended to incorporate selective mining in future studies. The shipping plan needed to be modified for a better correlation between coal production levels, in situ coal resources and wash plant capacity.

ZINIFEX Century Mine is a zinc, lead and silver concentrate producer. Flotation is the primary method of minerals separation in this circuit. The flotation circuit is quite large with 79 flotation cells. The levels in each of these interconnected cells are controlled at more than 45 level control stations. Due to the multivariable interaction throughout the circuit, good level control was found to be difficult to achieve by just using normal Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control. As a first step in advanced process control, the FloatStar Level Stabiliser, a multivariable controller developed specifically for flotation circuits, has been commissioned at Century mine to solve the level control problems. The first section of this paper therefore discusses and shows the results and improvements obtained by using the FloatStar level stabiliser. The results and benefits of the FloatStar Flow Optimiser are discussed in the second section of this paper.

The New South Wales coal industry is a highly mechanised well organised industry which has developed from an annual production of slightly less than 13 million tons in 1950 to over 33 million tons in 1969. Although continuous miners were not introduced into the mines until 1950, by Jillle 1969 the percentage of coal won by these units was 87.3. The paper describes mining conditions in the various coalfields of the State, their complexities and problems and how these have been dealt with. The introduction of fully mechanised long wall faces has presented a challenge which has been accepted and descriptions of systems in use are discussed. Major expansion of the industry is anticipated to meet the requirements of the growing Australian steel industry, for local power generation and to meet the increasing demands of overseas markets.

The Government of Canada recently passed a new regulation to control the liquid discharges from metal mines in Canada. The Metal Mining Effluent Regulation of the Federal Fisheries Act will come into force within the next six months. As a result the Ontario Regional Office of Environment Canada has developed a compliance promotion program to accompany the new regulation. How the mines implement the regulation will be key to its success. This paper will briefly outline the components of this regulation, including the reporting structure, the discharge parameters and limits, as well as the requirement for the mines to conduct long-term environmental effects monitoring on their effluent discharge. The presentation will give a brief account of the compliance promotion program, and then focus on the spill trends from Ontario mining operations. The province of Ontario has the largest concentration of metal mining operations in the country with approximately 40 active mines.

FROM time to time articles have appeared in the technical press on the interesting subject of surface combustion. The theoretical part of the problem has, for practical purposes, received ample consideration in those articles, but the number of practical applications of surface combustion referred to has generally been very small.It is the writer's object to review some recent developments in surface combustion, and also to try to arrive at an estimate of its advantages and possibilities. It is not necessary for this purpose to dilate upon the phenomenon of surface combustion itself. Many interesting things have been said on the subject by Pro£. W. A. Bone, of Leeds, to whose researches the recent developments are largely due. A few illustrations may make clear what is meant by surface combustion.Prof. Bone, in an experiment, took a platinum crucible, which he heated in the flame of a Meker-burner. Then he turned the gas off for a second, and, opening the stop-cock again, allowed the combustible mixture to impinge upon the crucible, thetemperature of which was still well below the ignition temperature of the gas. Although no flame was visible at this stage, it was soon clear that, nevertheless, the gas and air had continued to combine, as the crucible would attain a red heat after a few seconds.Another instance of surface combustion was shown by a Mr. Fletcher, in 1882. He placed an iron ball, weighing 3 lb., on a slab of fireclay, heated it for a few seconds with a blow-pipe, and blew the flame out, leaving the gas-mixture still...

Sustainable development is a critical discussion topic in the mining industry today. The topic is necessarily broad and complex, covering an entire spectrum of related areas, from geology to end-use products. The objective of this keynote address is to focus on the chemicals and chemistry aspects - especially research and technology transfer - in sustainable mineral processing. Chemicals came to play a critical role in mineral processing during the last century, and they will play an equally vital role in confronting the sustainability challenges of the 21st century, particularly in the areas of greener chemicals, water efficiency and water resource management; waste reduction and remediation; minimising environmental impact, safety and health risks (meeting and exceeding the requirements of regulations); energy efficiency; and converting mineral resources into reserves. This keynote address argues that the current research framework is no longer adequate to serve the goals of sustainable mineral processing. The problems studied are often too narrowly defined or irrelevant, while the research efforts are fragmented and the methods and approach employed are often too reductionistic to produce useful knowledge. A new framework for research is needed. This address further argues that a new framework based on a holistic or systems approach can best tackle the challenges of sustainable mineral processing. Central tenets of this approach include a recognition that, in complex systems, the behaviour of the whole system is more than the sum of the individual contributions, and that interactions occur in real time, often in subtle and complex ways. The focus is thus on the behaviour of the whole system. Indeed, a comprehensive understanding of the system through large-scale measurements should precede a study of parts or of idealised models of the complex system. The result will be a sound knowledgebase, better solutions to the challenges of sustainable development, and improved technology transfer. Developing such a framework will pose a formidable challenge, requiring significant time and effort as well as a confluence of diverse specialties and strategic collaboration. Fortunately, recent developments in the context of reagent optimisation provide us with a prototype of a holistic approach. We can also draw upon methodological innovations in the biological sciences, where the critical need for a systems approach is well recognised and significant advances have been made.
