The American Society of Chemical Engineers and the American Ceramic Society have for some years past devoted especial attention to the educational matters of their respective fields. The Engineering Foundation, representing the great engineering societies of the country, is deeply interested in technical education and maintains a Committee on Educational Research.

ENGINEERS are the key men in our war program today. Upon the technical knowledge and skill of the engineer and upon his administrative and executive abilities rests the entire success for the production of vital materials of the war. Naturally the work load of the engineering examining unit of the U. S. Civil Service Commission has increased greatly since our active participation in the war. At present, over 550 separate requests for certification of eligibles are received by the engineering unit per week. These represent more than a fourth of the total requests received for personnel by the Commission's central office at Washington and represent a recruitment work load of three to four times that carried by the whole Commission previous to January 1940. These requests represent a minimum of a thousand vacancies to be filled each week, while an average week will produce, at present, approximately 1400 vacancies and a weekly maximum may approach well over 2000 vacancies.

Dramatic changes have been effected since 1955 in the mode of iron ore shipments within the U.S. In 1955, less than one percent of ore consumed in domestic blast furnaces-approximately 125 million long tons-consisted of pellets. Five years later, in 1960, some 94.8 million tons of ore were consumed, 14% in the form of pellets. Projections for 1980 reinforce confidence in this most economic of blast furnace feeds, and set U.S. pellet consumption at 151.2 million tons. In the last decade, pellets caught fire in other countries. By 1969, world production reached 96 million tons. This compares strikingly with present world output of 154 million tons.

IN times like these, the A. I. M. E. and similar societies have their greatest usefulness. . . . Individuals and companies acting alone in the development of public opinion are merely voices crying in the wilderness. United and organized they make a great force that can and does influence public action. . . . What part, if any, then, shall the A. I. M. E. take in these great stabilization processes of civilization? Shall it help to give direction and force to scientific knowledge which comes within its field of activity or shall it merely develop more of it? . . . Is it the A. I. M. E.'s function to help bring system, order and direction out of this situation so that the world can again have forward economic movement, or should it rest on its oars until other agenciess develop that public understanding and direction so necessary for economic progress? As we understand the functions of the A. I. M. E. Petro¬leum Division, they are to discover and promote knowl¬edge for the benefit of society on the mining of oil and gas. To the individual member of the Petroleum Division, there are certain advantages of social and professional contacts, but the collective purpose is that described. And the individual is benefited by membership only as the Division measures up to the purposes of its existence. Consequently, the welfare of this Division and that of its members depends on the extent to which it keeps pace with the needs of society on matters relating to the mining of oil and gas.

The Carol concentrator of the Iron Ore Company of Canada was completed in 1962 and through expansions .has become one of the largest iron ore beneficiation plants in the world with a new feed capacity of 147,000 It (149,350 mt) per day. The Carol ore contains specular hematite and magnetite having a bulk density of 166 lb/cu ft (2660 kg/m3) It is crushed to 7 in. (178 mm) for feeding to autogenous mills for subsequent concentration by Humphrey’s s spirals. Mine ore is loaded into 150 It (152 mt) trucks by 10 cu yd (7.65 m3) shovels and then, at a transfer station, is loaded into side-dump rail cars of 100 It (101.6 mt) capacity. Each train is composed of twenty cars and operates completely automatically as it hauls the ore to the primary crushing station, dumps its loads, and returns to the loading station, a 11.5 mile (18.5 km) round trip. The primary crushing station is composed of two 60 in. by 89 in. gyratories installed in 1962 and 1972. Neither crusher has a grizzly ahead of it. Rail cars are dumped into 300 It (305 mt) pockets which contain splitters for spider protection. What few oversize boulders which do not go through the crushers are drilled and blasted. Liners in the dump pocket and the crushed ore pokcet under the crusher are manganese steel. Both crushers are direct driven by 700 hp (5 15 kw) motors, and the hardness of the ore causes them to pull almost their full power. Crushed ore drops into a 160 It (163 mt) pocket equipped with radioactive level control units for low-intermediate, and high level indications. The low level unit stops and starts the apron feeder, the intermediate unit controls the feeder speed, and a high-level reading stops the car dumping. Apron feeders are 72 in. (1. 82 m) wide and are variable speed from 12 to 52 fpm (3. 7 to 15. 8 mpm). They discharge to 60 in. (1.52 m) wide takeaway belts. Crushing capacity, nominal and maximum for each crusher, is 4, 000 ltph (4. 064 mtph) and 4,600 ltph (4,674 mtph). The crusher eccentric is removed by a conventional cart which travels on removable rails. Mainshaft removal and maintenance is done by 65 and 75/10 ton cranes. Mainshaft replacement requires eight hours, a usual time, but concave replacement requires only sixteen hours, a result of a fine maintenance organization. Mantle relining is done at grade next to a repair track. Zinc is used for backing both mantles and concaves. Both the electrical rooms and the dust collectors are located below grade,

Preferred orientations in unalloyed zirconium were determined by the Geiger-counter spectrometer X-ray diffraction technique. With increasing P-annealing temperature the following textures were obtained: l—a retained a-annealing texture, 2—additional orientations predictable from the a-p (Burgers) relationship, and 3—a texture derived from a cube texture in the p phase. Earlier work on cold-worked and a-annealed zirconium was reappraised to show a quantitative dependence of rotations on temperature and to identify spurious areas of some of the pole figures. IN a previous paper,' the preferred orientations of high purity zirconium sheet were described for cold-rolled and annealed samples. Annealing temperatures up to 900°C, which is slightly above the allotropic transformation temperature, were explored. Of interest was the observation that the orientation of the hexagonal-close-packed material after annealing in the temperature range of the stable body-centered-cubic phase was similar to that of the material which had been annealed in the a temperature region, although a change in texture would be expected because of the many new orientations based on an orientation relationship between the two forms of zirconium. The reversion to an original orientation after an allotropic transformation cycle is not unusual. It has been found for titanium,"* for thallium," and for cobaltB among the hexagonal metals. Burgers found in his original work7 that, when zirconium was cooled through the allotropic transformation and then reheated, the body-centered-cubic phase reverted to the original orientation. Additional experimental work has been carried out to further explore the textures of zirconium after annealing in the temperature range above the allotropic transformation. In addition, a reappraisal was made of the earlier results for zirconium' in light of recent work on titanium4 which has shown that the texture type depends quantitatively on the temperature of annealing and that spurious areas may be encountered in the pole figures of hexagonal metals determined by the X-ray spectrogoniometer technique of analysis. Experimental Procedure Crystal-bar zirconium prepared by the iodide process was the material used in this investigation. The major impurity was hafnium which was less than 0.3 pct. The composition obtained by spectro-graphic analysis is given in Table I. Cold-rolled specimens were prepared from crystal bar by a series of reductions of approximately 0.010 in. until the sheet reached a thickness of 0.010 in., after which it was cold rolled to 0.001 in. thickness between sheets of alloy steel. The total cold reduction amounted to about 99.8 pct. Specimens were annealed for % hr at 1000" to 1100" to 1200°C or 1 hr at 1400°C in an evacuated Vycor or quartz tube. In recent years considerable work has been undertaken in order to gain an understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the generation of recrystal- lization textures in face-centered-cubic metals. Two theories have been proposed, that of oriented growth1 and that of oriented nucleation,' and several attempts have been made to check these theories directly by recrystallizing deformed single crystals.3-5 Two groups, Graham-Cahn and Liebmann-Liicke-Masing, studied the orientation of recrystallized grains and their rate of growth, both using strained aluminum single crystals of commercial purity (Graham et al., 99.6 pct, Liebmann et al., 99.8 pct). Quite properly it has been a tradition of engineering education that facts and not fancies must be adhered to. Without a doubt, those men who formed the mold of our engineering philosophy as much as it is possible for such molds to be established-rightly held the highest standards of intellectual honesty. Fortunately, it was unthinkable to them to temporize with untried theories and naturally the men whom they trained as engineering educators carry this philosophy in turn to their students, thus handing down the tradition of stability.

SO commonplace that they are seldom noticed, mining-machinr, bits have a definite and important bearing on the cost of coal production. At the average mine many thousands of bits are used during the year. The actual cost represented by the purchase of the bits used, as well as that of sharpening and handling them, represents a considerable sum of money. From the point of view of indirect costs they are important, as the lack of good bits at a mining machine can seriously impair production. Good bits tend to ensure an adequate supply of coal. Classes OF Bits Mining-machine bits may be divided into three general classes, based on shape and method of use: (I) chisel, (2) pick-point and (3) one-use. The chisel and pick-point bits are shown in Fig. I. The so-called "chisel" bits were made of steel of various sizes and were sharpened to a wide chisel cutting edge. Few of this type of bit are used, except in places where coring is very bad. Sometimes chisel bits are used with standard bits to help cut out the core. The "pick-point" bit is widely used today. Normally it is made from ½ by I-in. steel, is about 4½ in. long when new, has a rake angle of about 25°, a front clearance of about 23O, a side clearance of approximsteji 8".' There are many variations in the shape of this bit, depending on the ideas of the individual that may be dressing the dies of the bit machine. This bit has been generally used for many years and at present, in one form or another, is by far the most popular bit used in coal mines. This bit usually is made from 0.85 carbon steel, although in recent years some alloy-steel bits have made their appearance. At present, carbon-steel bits are frequently tipped in. hard facing materials. A third class of bits might be called the L'one-use" bit; that is, a small bit that is used once and then thrown away. These bits have two or three points, are usually made from 0.85 carbon steel and sometimes from higher alloys. Recently some. of them have been tipped with hard facing material. IN the apparatus for measuring internal friction shown in fig. 1, a modification of that described by Kê,1,2 the parasitic energy loss or background is equivalent to a Q-1 of approximately 4x10-5. This low value of background was obtained by using a jeweler's collet of appropriate size for the upper support, eliminating lateral motion without immersing the bob in oil, and designing the bob to reduce air resistance. The pendulum is supported on the frame through a snug fitting, sliding rotary joint (fig. I-B). A slight twist of the top imparts essentially pure torsional motion to the pendulum. No evidence of energy loss in the sliding joint has been observed. In the bob (E) steel balls are used in the torsion arm, and the bottom is filled with lead giving a total weight of 94 g. A lighter bob may be used for small diameter specimens. Another bob was a solid disc with provision for adding discs to change the frequency. The oscillating image of the filament is recorded on a revolving drum camera (fig. 1-3) driven by a synchronous motor. This allows use of frequencies higher than can be measured visually on a glass scale. Samples varying in diameter from 0.020 to 0.075 in. have been measured, the frequencies have ranged from 1 to 12 cps, and the maximum strain varied from 0.5 to 10x10-5. With appropriate modification the sample may be placed in a thermostat. The apparatus may also be used to measure the shear modulus. In the examples of measurement given in table I the internal friction of Permendur and the 46.8 Ni-Fe alloy are due, for the most part, to magneto-mechanical hysteresis8 (elastic hysteresis accompanying stress-induced magnetostriction) which depends on strain amplitude and increases with annealing. (communication to the Secretary*).-The discussion of Mr. Henrich's paper took place at a meeting from which I had the misfortune to be absent, and has just come to my attention. I do not wish to let the subject pass without contributing to it a little information which has come into my possession. In 1912, I published a brief note in the Transactions on The Effect of Alumina in Blast-Furnace Slags, giving in tabular form three typical slags used in iron blast-furnace practice, one of them the high alumina slag of, which Professor Richards speaks. In subsequent experience with charcoal furnaces, I found the same rule to hold; that the chemical effect of alumina could be disregarded, providing the ratio of the lime and magnesia to the silica were kept constant. This is exactly the experience which Messrs. Dwight and Mathewson had in copper- and' lead-smelting furnaces. I have never seen any evidence or argument adequate to support the contention of Professor Richards-that the alumina acted as a base in the charcoal iron furnace and as an acid in the coke furnace, and that the function of alumina in iron-furnace slags is inherently different from that in copper- and lead-furnace slags-and I am compelled to differ absolutely with his conclusions in that respect.

Where Does the Mine Dollar Go? EXPERIENCE has indicated that hard bronzes are not suitable for bearing applications where high bearing loads and speeds are involved. It is the general practice to utilize softer materials for these purposes, such as copper, lead, silver, babbitt, lead-base alloys, and more recently aluminum-base alloys, preferably supported by a steel backing. It was the objective of the present investigation to study a new material produced by powder metallurgical methods susceptible to precipitation-hardening. TEST MATERIALS Preliminary tests were made with compacts containing copper, nickel and silicon in quantities sufficient to form 3 to 5 per cent nickel silicide. It was found that this type of alloy was susceptible to the formation of a soft surface shell when sintered in tank hydrogen. The depth of the shell depended on the length of sintering time and sintering temperature, and varied in thickness from a few thousandths to as much as one eighth inch. This soft shell resulted from the preferential oxidation of silicon, thereby reducing the efficiency of age-hardening by the nickel silicide compound. The body of the sintered compacts below the soft shell could be precipitation-hardened to a hardness of 70 to 85 Rockwell B, by quenching from. 900°C. and age-hardening at 450°C. A series of tests was made with various addition agents, in order to decrease the rate of preferential oxidation, and it was found that phosphorus was most beneficial in this respect. After considerable experimentation, the following nominal composition was accepted as standard: 2.4 per cent nickel; 0.8 silicon; 0.3 phosphorus; balance copper. The physical properties and certain bearing properties of this alloy are described in the present paper. PREPARATION OF COMPACTS Several methods of incorporating the hardening ingredient (nickel silicide) were studied. Compacts formed from copper, nickel and silicon powders were found to be inferior to those fabricated from prealloyed nickel silicide master alloys, because of the rapid oxidation of pure silicon during sintering. The use of a prealloyed nickel silicide hardener containing 25 per cent silicon and 75 per cent nickel could be further improved by preparing a master alloy, incorporating nickel, silicon, phosphorus and copper, having the following nominal composition: 25 per cent nickel; 7 silicon; 3 phosphorus; 64 copper. This alloy is brittle in. the cast condition and can be readily powdered. SINTERING PROCEDURE The blended powders were pressed at 25 to 40 tons per sq. in., the pressure depending on the size and shape of the compacts. This paper "On Coal" was published in three issues of The Western Gleaner in 1814. Name of author is not given. This magazine was started by Cramer, Spear & Eichbaum, in Pittsburgh, Pa., in December 1813, and ran for about two years. Copies are very rare, and this one is made from an original in the Darlington Library, University of Pittsburgh. This is almost certainly the first general article on coal published west of the Allegheny Mountains, and one of the earliest in this country. ON COAL Its Natural History-Mining of Coal-Phenomena occasioned by Fire-damp-Method of Coking-Distillation of Tar from Pit-coal-Gas-light-Coal, a Manure I. NATURAL HISTORY OF COAL There are few productions of nature which present to the philosopher a wider field of investigation than pit-coal. A substance highly inflammable is found in the deep recesses of the earth, sometimes loaded with numerous superincumbent strata of hard rock, and extending frequently along with these strata through a vast expanse of territory. Though metals may be said to be inflammable substances, as they combine more or less rapidly with oxygen when placed under particular circumstances, yet the character of rapid combustion with disengagement of light and heat, seems to belong. principally to such substances as are derived either from the animal or vegetable kingdom. That this is probably the case with regard to coal we are further induced to believe, by the remarkable circumstance, that the chemical analysis of this natural production yields especially, though in various proportions, those materials which constitute essentially the vegetable. And if any thing was wanting to confirm, us in that opinion we might trace in a number of fossile substances the gradual transition of the vegetable into the state of mineral coal. This fact is so intimately connected with the natural history of coal, that we cannot think it superfluous to give it some farther development. Among the great number of principles which the chemist is capable of tracing in the vegetable kingdom, the presence of extract, resin and fibre seem to form the characteristical marks of plants.-If vegetable matter be boiled in water, and the water, after having been strained and filtered, be exposed for some time to the open air, a flocculent precipitate takes `place from every part of the liquor; which soon subsides to the bottom of the vessel containing it. This is the extract; altered, indeed, by exposure, and now no longer soluble in water, a change which is supposed to depend on the absorption of oxygen; and if, by any means the proportion of oxygen be increased, the extract gradually becomes of a darker color, blackens, and approaches to the state of charred wood.

Potential differences between strata of shale and sandstone have been recognized for about 15 years, and they form the basis of the electrical logging of oil wells. Hitherto these potentials have been ascribed solely to electro-¦ chemical reactions caused by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole through which they are generally measured. Observations by the author in wells empty of water and in a mine shaft suggest that potential differences between sandstones and shales are natural and specific properties of the rocks, although they are moditied in measurement by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. The cause of these potentials probably is to be sought in the relative polar adsorptive capacities of quartz and clay particles. Introduction The existence of potential differences in the surface of the earth has been known for some time, and their measurement has facilitated the discovery of geological discontinuities such as ore bodies. The technique of measurement has been well established.1-3 In measurements in oil wells, it has been found that the potential of shales with respect to some arbitrary reference is very nearly constant in any one well, at least below the zone to which meteoric water has gained access. Potential differences between strata of shale and sandstone have been recognized for about 15 years, and they form the basis of the electrical logging of oil wells. Hitherto these potentials have been ascribed solely to electro-¦ chemical reactions caused by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole through which they are generally measured. Observations by the author in wells empty of water and in a mine shaft suggest that potential differences between sandstones and shales are natural and specific properties of the rocks, although they are moditied in measurement by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. The cause of these potentials probably is to be sought in the relative polar adsorptive capacities of quartz and clay particles. Introduction The existence of potential differences in the surface of the earth has been known for some time, and their measurement has facilitated the discovery of geological discontinuities such as ore bodies. In 1931 the Philadelphia Company acquired by lease several coal mines in southern Greene County, Pennsylvania. These mines were known as the "Dora," "Seventh Pool" and "Rosedale" mines in the Sewickley seam, and the "Rosemary," "Seventh Pool" and "Warwick" mines in the Pittsburgh seam. All these mines are in the immediate vicinity of Greensboro, Pa., with considerable river frontage on both sides of that village. The mines in each seam are contiguous and to some extent the properties in the two seams lie one above the other. In 1938 the property known as the "Sandy Run mine," in the Sewickley seam, adjoining the Dora mine, was purchased from the Fredericktown Coal and Coke Co. Altogether, by purchase and lease, the company gained control of approximately 3400 acres of coal land in Greene County, from which it was estimated that some 20,000,000 tons of coal could be extracted. Geology of Warwick Properties Both seams of coal outcrop along or near the river on both sides of the town of Greensbgro. They lie on the eastern slope of the Lambert syncline, near the southern end of the axis, consequently the predominant dip of the seams is away from the river, so that development for river handling has the unavoidable disadvantage of adverse grades for haulage to the outside. Predominant grades away from the river at right angles to the "butt" cleat of the coal average about 2.25 per cent dipping in a westerly direction, but local dips occur, which are considerably greater. Predominant grades parallel to the river and at right angles to the "face" cleat of the coal average about one per cent dipping in a northerly direction. Both seams of coal lie in the Monongahela formation, the Pittsburgh bed being the bottom measure of the formation and the Sewickley bed lying about 90 it. above. Approximately midway between the two lies the Redstone coal bed, which is generally thin and of erratic occurrence and therefore of little commercial value. It is mined only locally where it attains sufficient thickness. Sewickley Bed The Sewickley bed is commonly called the "five-foot" or Mapletown" seam, because in Pennsylvania it reaches its greatest thickness and has been mined most extensively in the vicinity of the village of illapletown, approximately one mile west of Greensboro. In the early development of the Warwick properties, which occurred near the river, the seam had an average of 5 it. 2 in. in height. As development proceeded away from the river, however, the height gradually decreased until the average height of the present workings is about 4 ft. 6 in.
