(written discussion?).-As the die-casting process is so very different in character from the process of making sand molds, it is often considered that entirely different methods of pouring, gating, venting, etc. should be used. There is really, however, no essential difference in the making of (lie castings and sand castings, and similar methods should be used in each process. In the matter of gating, the metal should be introduced at a central point, as nearly as possible, so that it will have an equal distance to flow from the point of entrance to the most distant points of the mold. This will cause a uniform rate of congealing of the casting and prevent streaks and cold shuts. The venting should be done in such a way that a free exit of the air in the molds can occur. It should be less difficult to take care of the venting of a die-casting mold than to vent an ordinary sand mold. In the case of a sand mold, the venting is left, to a considerable extent, to the judgment of the molder, and it is possible that no two molds will be vented in a similar manner. Further than this, after a vent has been made in a sand mold, it may become clogged by the sand and for this reason be inefficient. There is also quite a variation in the pressure of the metal entering a sand mold, due to varying heights of the pouring gate. In a die-casting mold these factors can be controlled more closely. The vents should be so disposed that the air in the mold compressed by the entrance of the metal may be able to leave the mold at a uniform rate and by exits located symmetrically. These exits are made quite small on molds at first, as they can he easily enlarged if necessary, and they are tapered so that a free flow is guaranteed without danger of the metal spurting out from the die. Uniformity of pressure of the metal as it enters the mold is very important and, as the pressure is mechanically applied, its control is not difficult. It is true that a sand mold has much less of a chilling effect on the metal poured into it than has the die-casting mold, but, outside of this point, there is a great similarity between the die-casting process and the process of making castings in sand folds. It is suggested that much would be gained by regarding these two processes as not essentially different.

The success of the Charpy impact test in the steel industry has led those interested in aluminum alloys to investigate the possible application of this test to aluminum and its alloys. In this paper are set forth the results of a few preliminary tests made at the Lynite Laboratories of the Aluminum Manufactures, Inc. In order to study more thoroughly the significance of the Charpy test, slow-bending tests have been made duplicating the arrangement of the impact machine. Tests have been made on both notched and unnotched specimens of a series of copper-aluminum alloys. Apparatus The standard American-made Charpy impact machine delivering a blow of over 200 ft.-lb. was much too large to test aluminum-alloy specimens of the same type used for steel, so that it was necessary either to adopt a larger specimen or to have a special light-weight hammer made. Since there is no known relation between specimens of different sixes, even though geometrically similar, it was decided to adhere to the 10 by 10 mm. specimen. Accordingly, Sauveur and Boylston, the American makers of the machine, were asked to construct a special light-weight pendulum adapted to their standard machine, this pendulum to have one-tenth the capacity of the standard. The writer wishes here to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. H. M. Boylston for the personal interest and care exercised in constructing this pendulum. The machine with the light-weight hammer in place is shown in Fig. I. It is mounted on a concrete foundation with the concrete covering the flange on the base of the machine. Vibration is further prevented by four 5/8-in. (15.8 mm.) foundation bolts. The large standard hammer shown against the wall was also used for some of the unnotched bars that required more than 20 ft.-lb. to rupture. With the recent advances which have been made in science and technology and the increased use of mathematics in this area, the question of the best mathematics courses for a mining engineer to take is of major importance. The question becomes even more difficult to answer due to the recent increase in the number of different mathematics courses in the last two decades offered by the mathematics departments. Therefore, the National Study of Mathematics Requirements for Scientists and Engineers (NSMRSE) was designed to provide some answers to these questions. Approximately 10,000 scientists and engineers were selected for the Study, These individuals were placed in two categories: (1) The Awards Group, recipients of national honors or awards and those recommended by the members of the Board of Advisors as having national and international reputations in their areas of specialization and (2) The Abstracts Group, persons exceptionally productive in their research, based on the number of journal articles listed in the last five years in the Engineering Index, Scientific and Technological Aerospace Reports, Chemical Abstracts, Biological Abstracts, and the Physics Abstracts. The NSMRSE Course Recommendation Form and the Instruction and Course Content Sheet were constructed with the aid of the Board of Advisors and other consultants. For the Study, 40 courses were selected by the mathematical consultants. In order to make sure that the basic content of the mathematics courses was the same for all respondents, a brief resume of each of the 40 courses was given. The NSMRSE Course Recommendation Form consisted of seven sections. These sections were as follows: Section 1, 38 different specializations; Section 2, orientation of work (applied through theoretical); Section 3, highest degree obtained; Section 4, place of employment (academic, nonacademic); Section 5, administrative capacity (administrative or nonadministrative); Section 6, age groups (five-year intervals). Section 7 contained the 40 courses which were to be marked according to five categories: (1) Course Length, 3 to 36 weeks; (2) Applied-Theoretical Orientation, a five-point scale; (3) Course Level, freshman through graduate; (4) Knowledge of Course; and (5) Use of Course Content in Work. The Analysis The report of the data is based on the replies received from 44 mining engineers. This group was part of the Awards and Abstracts Group for all engineers. The resume of the recommended courses is reported in quintiles (upper fifth to lower fifth), since recommendations of this kind are not precise. The results of the Study are based on recommendations of the most active research men in engineering in the U.S. today; therefore, the reader should realize that these course recommendations represent an upper bound of mathematics requirements for the Ph.D. in both undergraduate and graduate work. Conclusions and Recommendations 1) Mining engineering students who plan to be active research specialists should take all those courses which are "very highly recommended" (80-10070) and "highly recommended" (60-79.9%). Those courses in the upper two quintiles and recommended by most mining engineers are: first-year calculus, third-semester calculus, elementary differential equations, applied statistics, and machine computation. Courses of "moderate recommendation" (40-59.9%) are: vectors, intermediate ordinary differential equations, the first course in partial differential equations, elementary probability, and linear programming. 2) The great majority of mining engineers indicated that they prefer a course which is concerned primarily with applications. Only the standard courses such as first-year college mathematics, calculus, differential equations, and advanced calculus received a recommendation for 50% theory and 50% practice. Therefore, all mathematics courses given to mining engineers should contain many applications and little theory. Engineers in both the applied and the combination (ap-plied-theoretical) groups indicated a definite need for applications in all courses. 3) In general, recommendations were for mathematics courses to be given for short intervals of time such as 3, 6, or 12 weeks. Only the standard courses mentioned previously received the usual one-semester or one-year recommendation. Therefore, it is of value to combine several related courses into a one or two-semester course so that the mining engineering student could acquire important mathematical knowledge at an early date in order to prepare him for his research. 4) There was little use for the newer courses in modern mathematics such as the functional analysis sequence, the modern algebra sequence, and the group theory sequence. In addition, there were uniformly very low recommendations (0-19.9%) for multilinear algebra, complex variables, mathematical logic, special functions, integral equations, approximation theory, analytic mechanics, integral transforms, and geometric algebra. Therefore, these courses should be given a low priority. 5a) Comparisons among mining engineers with different backgrounds showed that the combination ap-plied-theoretical group recommended more mathematics than the applied group. 5b) There was little difference in recommendations between the administrative group and the nonadminis-trative group. 5c) Analysis of age groups showed that those in the lower age groups gave significantly higher recommendations to courses such as the first course in partial dif-

An analysis is presented to show that the formation of rolling textures in fcc metals can be rationalized in terms of flow mechanisms operative during the rolling process. First, a general approach used by Calnan is followed, where the rolling process is approximated on the basis of two axes, p and Q. In this treatement there are two separate sets of slip systems, one for each axis, and it is shown that a homogeneous rotation can he achieved by restricting the slip systems for the two axes to share common slip directions Then, two criteria are used to select the active slip systems for the axis P: they must have relatively high resoloed shear stresses, and dislocations on these slip systems must interact attractively in order to lower total energy content Finally, a method of analysis is introduced to locate the end position of an axis by knowing its acti7.e slip systems. The result of the analysis indi- cates that two main flow mechanisms operate in fcc metals. The ideal orientation derived from one oj-them is (8 13 21) (21 8 13) which is very close to the (358) (523) orientation observed experimentally on the rolling texture of copper. This flow mechanism should only he operative in metals containing dislocations extended into partials separated by less than five times their lattice parameter. The ideal orientations derived from the other flow mechanism are a combination of (1 10} (112) and a spread of orientations with (110) parallel to the rolling plane. This type of ideal orientations corresponds to those observed in the rolling texture of silver 30:70 brass, and binary alloys with high alloying content. This flow mechanism should be operative in any fcc metal regardless of its stacking-fauIt energy. The passage by Congress of Public Law 92-500 (the 1972 Water Pollution Control Act amendment) has placed a new emphasis on the need for methods to minimize the escape of water from tailings ponds. Presumably tailings pond seepage will fall under the jurisdiction of the act. This paper is designed to explain some of the problems caused by leakage from tailings ponds and to present a method by which leakage can be minimized if not eliminated. Ground-water pollution in one case studied by the authors results from leaching of old jig tailings that are intermixed with the upper part of a sand and gravel aquifer. Anomalous concentrations of zinc, lead, and cadmium occur in ground water and soil samples taken from the portion of the sand and gravel aquifer containing the old jig tailings. Analysis of water samples from a tailings pond located in the area indicates that the pond water is not the source of the heavy metal concentrations found in the down-gradient ground water. However, leakage from the pond and water from the pond's decant system combine with natural ground water to compound the problem by raising the water table into old jig tailings which cover the upper portion of the aquifer. The ground water which discharges from this aquifer causes a statistically significant decrease in the quality of the receiving stream water. The shallow ground water contains oxygen; therefore, corrective measures include lowering the water table to depths below the old jig tailings which cover the aquifer at ground level. This, in turn, implies elimination of ground-water recharge by subsurface leakage from the pond. A laboratory study and a mathematical model study have revealed that seepage from such ponds can be minimized by a carefully designed and managed peripheral tailings discharge system. The process involves maintaining the slime zone and the free-water surface near the center of the pond so that the slimes retard downward and semilateral movement of pond water. The free-water surface must not be allowed to extend out over the nonslime portion of the tailings during or after pond operation. Mathematical model output reveals that this method can hold the subsurface discharge rate to as little as 110 gpd per acre of pond water area. The technique should be applicable to any tailings pond system in which the loss via seepage of poor quality water must be minimized or where recharge of ground water by losses from a tailings pond must be minimized, regardless of the reason.

THIS paper is not an announcement of the successful conclusion of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation's pacos-pyrite problems, but merely a description of the commercial-scale, intermittent-roasting operations conducted by the writer, J. H. Lucas and others of the staff. It was prepared by request, for presentation at the February meeting of the Institute. The results obtained in Peru confirm the 1-ton-a-day experiments completed about three years ago at Kearny, N. J. by C. C. Gordon and Mr. Lucas, where it was first demonstrated that a mixture of about 80 per cent. pacos ore with 10 per cent. pyrite ore and 10 per cent. salt could be roasted intermittently in a small 1-ton-a-day Holt-Dern furnace without extraneous fuel, producing porous calcine that could be leached rapidly. Mr. Keep and his staff, by successfully introducing improvements in the construction of the commercial furnace and in their handling of material, have established beyond doubt a low cost for roasting. The other steps in the process of treating pacos and pyrite ores have not as yet been demonstrated as sufficiently conclusive to warrant their acceptance for a permanent plant. Cerro de Pasco Ores The ores of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corpn. at Cerro de Pasco, Peru, are situated at an altitude of 14,000 ft. The town and mines are served by the Cerro de Pasco Railroad, which operates between Cerro de Pasco and Oroya, the site of the company's copper and lead smelters. A survey of the effect of heat treatment on the room temperature hardness of Fe-Mo alloys has been made. Constant strain rate tensile tests were performed between room temperature and 1800°F. These data were analyzed to determine the effect of temperature and composition on the strain hardening coefficient and strain rate sensitivity. Constant load creep-rupture tests were made on these alloys and the results related to composition and structure. A relation between the high temperature strength of the precipitation hardened alloys and the volume of precipitate has been observed. IN view of the extensive use of ferritic materials at elevated temperatures, it is surprising to note the limited amount of information relating the variables of plastic deformation, i.e., composition, structure, temperature, stress, strain, and strain rate. Hollomon and Lubahn' showed how the several variables of plastic flow might be treated analytically. No data were available on carbon-free iron and its alloys in a form suitable for this analysis. Several German investigations2-" constitute most of the experimental work relating high temperature properties to the constitution of these types of materials. In order to obtain new data, the iron-rich alloys of the Fe-Mo system were selected for detailed investigation for the following reasons: 1—Some of the important effects of molybdenum on the mechanical properties of iron have already been studied.' , 821 2—By suitable heat treatment of selected alloys, it is possible to study strengthening effects of four types: AT -a transformation, B—substitutional, C—precipitation, and D—dispersion of hard inter-metallic compound. Materials and Treatment Four-pound ingots were vacuum cast, employing the same melting schedule previously used.? The raw materials were electrolytic iron and lamp-grade molybdenum. The ingots were forged to l/z in. sq. rod and one portion swaged to 0.350 in. diam rod for the production of 1 15/16 in. long button-head specimens. The button-head specimen blanks were solution treated for 16 hr at 2100°F in hydrogen of —70°C dewpoint and then water quenched. They were subsequently plunge ground to the standard 0.160 in. diam test bar. Micrographs of the solution treated alloys are given in Figs. la through Id. The higher molybdenum alloys contained large equiaxed ferrite crystals similar to those in Fig. Id. A portion of the % in. rod was hot rolled to 0.100 in., sandblasted, and cold rolled to 0.020 in. Strip tensile specimens having a 0.020x0.200 in. cross-section and a 2.25 in. gage length were machined from the sheet. The alloys containing molybdenum were subsequently annealed 1 hr at 1560°F. The iron strip was annealed 4 hr at 1300°F in wet hydrogen. The resultant structures are shown in Fig. 2a through h. The ASTM grain sizes were 1 to 3 as solution heat treated or 3 to 4 as annealed. The chemical analyses of the alloys are given in Table I. Carbon contents were obtained after the heat treatments in hydrogen. Alloy 15.9 pct Mo was tested as a cast alloy.'

This article summarizes the successful incorporation of a flash-flooding stream into the tailing-disposal system at the St. Joseph Lead Company's Federal Division mill, in St. Francois County, Missouri. The mill was built in 1906, by the Federal Lead Co., as its No. 3 mill for the concentration of southeastern Missouri lead ores, and damming Davis Creek was first considered in 1908. Plans were made also in 1925 and in 1937. Dam layouts varied from a reinforced concrete structure to a barrier built of tailings alone. .All were abandoned because of liability that would be incurred by flash-flood rupturing of an incompleted dam. By 1942 mill capacity had reached 12,000 tons daily and increasing tailing-disposal costs again focused attention on the Davis Creek basin. This time the problem of riskless dam building was solved. Moreover, most of the items that appeared in the answer were materials that normally required wasting and the major portion of labor involved performed functions that it mould normally have done, without constructive benefit, elsewhere. The new layout also made possible advantageous changes in mill-water supply pumping; static head being reduced from 514 ft to 9; ft, friction head from 4900 ft to 2860 ft, and pumping can be done now at periods of low power demand. The following facts about the Davis Creek watershed explain the 36-year reluctance to reach these, and other, benefits. Size: 3600 acres. Outline: roughly pear-shaped, 21/2 by 3 miles at the largest dimensions. Topography: mostly hill land with steep valleys. Relief: 760 minimum to 1153 maximum. Maximum rainfall: 3.36 in. per hour. Permanent water: none natural. Now 2200 gpm discharged through 16-in. drill hole from mine pumps underground. Geology: the 17 acres near dam centerline is Bonne Terre dolomite covered with sand and gravel eroded from Pleistocene beds that cap some of the hills. The remainder of the pond basin is on Davis shale. Soil cover: mostly second-growth timber with some abandoned fields; all subject to careless burning, which reduces water-retaining ability. Flood history: flash-flooding that had taken at least one life. Downstream values: two railroad bridges before creek intersection with Flat River. Immediately below confluence, a highway bridge, a low-water crossing, a few business establishments and several blocks of residences. In July 1942 the following segments of an ingenious plan were put into operation. A ditch 270 ft long, 16 ft wide and 51/2 ft deep was excavated to bedrock in the gravelly soil along the proposed dam's centerline. This excavation, which exposed many gravel-filled channels, was run full of slimes drawn from a riser set in the top of an adjacent tailings-disposal

The characteristics of some common size distribution equations are critically discussed. A generalized form of several well-known size distribution equations is obtained from a differential equation describing statistical distributions. The equation contains three parameters and can describe the major features of size distributions in the fine and the coarse size regions. A graphical method for its implementation is provided. The application of this and other equations to sets of data are compared both for the quality of fit and from a comminution kinetics viewpoint. If a narrow size range of a brittle material is broken sufficiently to obliterate the feed sizes, but not so severely that excessive secondary breakage occurs, a plot of cumulative fraction by weight undersize (Y) vs. sieve size (X) on a log log grid (sometimes called the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann plot)1-3 gives a straight line of slope ~ 1 over much of its range. On closer inspection, deviations in the extreme coarse range covering perhaps 10 to 30% of the total sample may be apparent (frequently, a change in slope from ~ 1 to a value different from unity) together with over-all slight irregular departures from a smooth line. One model of breakage postulates that the same fracture pattern persists throughout all size ranges.4 The fracture pattern is characterized by the slope of the line on a log log grid. Accordingly, a distribution of sizes broken in the manner specified earlier is expected to produce a size distribution having the same slope as that of a broken narrow size range. Additionally, the slight irregularities mentioned above should even out in the summation process, giving a smooth straight line of slope ~1 on a log log plot. This idealized state of affairs does not, however, describe the distribution of a multi-event process such as that for a tumbling mill product. On the average, these curves (plotted again log log) tend to have a slope in the fine region different from and usually less than unity,5 while the coarse size region curves with increasing slope for cases of mild reduction, and with decreasing slope when moderate or severe size reduction has occurred. In addition, there are usually slight irregular deviations from a smooth curve. Most curves display two distinct regions — fine and coarse — and a few curves show one or more intermediate regions. Feed size studies6,7 show an effect which theory is required to explain. For the same material, mill loading and other operating conditions, and the same time of grinding, plotting the dimensionless ratios Y vs. X/(feed size) does not reduce the size distribution data to the same curve. Y vs. X does not correlate the coarse region, but it can provide a crude correlation of the fine region which improves as size diminishes and as grinding time increases. The size distribution in the coarse region is somewhat more dependent on the feed size than is the distribution in the fine region wherein the degree of dependence diminishes as time proceeds; the distribution of sizes in the fine region are determined largely by the nature of the material and the comminution conditions. A comprehensive model of comminution must recognize that several different patterns or modes of breakage can occur in a mill; 5,8,9 that there can be some selection in that some size ranges are broken more than others; and that, while some particles may be the product of a single fracture event, or may even remain unbroken, others result from multiple rebreak-age. Thus, breakage in a tumbling mill is more complex than the Schuhmann4 model admits in that several different types of comminution micro-events* occur rather than just one type, and these events, though different in size scale, are of the same overall pattern as that which is visualized by the model. The concept of an average comminution micro-event has, therefore, a mathematical rather than a physical connotation, at least for tumbling milling. Equations with which to describe particle size distributions have been sought for over half a century.10-13 No equation presently in general use was first derived from an analysis of the statistical mechanics of breakage; whatever theoretical basis the existing

The purposes of composition are various; one purpose, for instance, is to make a record for the writer's own use, as in a diary. That does not involve responsibility to others. There is also the writing meant to influence opinion-to be persuasive, and pleasing. With such writing we need not concern ourselves at this stage of our study. The prime purpose of technical writing is to be informative-to convey information; therefore it must" be clear beyond the chance of misunderstanding. Such clearness is impossible if meaningless or ill chosen, words are sprinkled through the text. Discard the trivial phrases that are constantly at your elbow. Brush aside a host of vapid superlatives. Metternich exclaimed:' "The superla¬tive is the mark of fools". It is a false emphasis, like the underlining in a school-girl's letter. For example, the little word `very' can be deleted nine times out of ten; it is an impediment to terse and perspicuous writing, as 'the multitudinous hand-baggage of the British tourist is to his travel. 'Very' supposes comparison. A mine with a 1000-ft. shaft is very deep to the scribe who writes from the Joplin district', in Missouri, but it seems a shallow hole to a man living at Calumet, Michigan. A vein that is 10 feet across may be considered very wide at Cripple Creek, Colorado, but it is only a `stringer' to the miner at the Homestake, in South Dakota. Ore assaying $20 in gold is very rich at Juneau, Alaska, where .10,000 tons of $1 ore is crushed daily, but it is relatively low-grade to the pocket-miner at Alleghany, in California. It is all a matter of comparison; unless the reader knows your standards of depth, width, or richness, your `very' has no significance. "Where erosion was very rapid or oxidation very shallow"

MONDAY, Feb. 21, evokes memories of the Silver Corridor at the Waldorf to be recalled and reflected upon for time to come when thoughts drift to the Annual Meeting of 1944. Crowded though it was, on occasion there lurked in the mind's eye a vision of what might have been had the 2886 persons who put in an appearance at one time or another milled around in the lobby of 29 West 39th Street. Some confusion resulted from difficulty in locating meeting rooms, but for the most part everyone found what he wanted. The usual bulletin board of members registered was missing this year and rumor has it that tile Waldorf didn't approve. Registration broke all previous records with many a busy engineer realizing that the program had something to offer that would be of use in his particular job. It might be noted here that "Arpad" co-operated nicely, previewing spring days on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday; Tuesday was a bit damp.

MECHANIZATION of American coal mining continues to make rapid progress. Economic pressure will compel abandonment of manual methods wherever possible and will also provide the incentive needed for the improvement of machines and mining systems. However, rapid progress may be made along strictly technological lines and at the same time much slower progress in approaching maximum productivly and efficiency. One can well ask, just how efficient are mechanized mines, and to what extent is productivity affected by the mental attitude of management and workers?

A unique feature of the recently dedicated pelletizing complex of Hamersley Iron Pty. Ltd. is the dry grinding circuit for the iron ore fines. This facility, located at Dampier, some 800 miles north of Perth, Western Australia, has a rated annual capacity of 2 million tpy of iron ore pellets. The Mt. Tom Price orebody, which supplies the pelletizing plant, is a massive deposit of high-grade hematite containing an estimated 500 million tons of ore averaging 64% iron. The main impurities are ferruginous shales that occur in bands of varying widths in the orebody. An average analysis shows 4.4% SiO2, 2.0% A12O3, 0.05% P and 1.8% LOI.

An experimental study of the variation of transverse-rupture strength with composition Anexperimentaland grain studysize has shown that the strength reaches a maximum for values of the mean free path between carbide particles of 0.3 to 0.6 microns. The fracture oforiginates in and proceeds through the carbide grains mainly. Impact strength and hardness also were recorded. MOST of the physical properties of sintered carbides vary linearly with composition. The transverse-rupture strength, however, shows a unique behavior. As the amount of binder metal is varied from 6 to 25 pct by weight, the strength at first increases; then, between 15 and 20 pct Co, it reaches a maximum of nearly 400,000 psi, and finally decreases with further additions of binder metal. This behavior of the transverse-rupture strength has been reported, among others, by Englel and Sandford and Trent.' The significance of these observations has not been discussed in the literature. That it may be of more than specific importance is indicated by the very similar variation of strength with composition encountered in other systems sintered in the presence of a liquid phase, such as Tic-Ni3 and Fe-Cu.' Experimental Details All compacts were prepared and sintered according to normal industrial practice. The average diameter of WC grains and the mean free path between grains were measured on metallographically prepared samples by a method of linear and planar analysis sing the relations where d is the average diameter of dispersed grains; Nl is the number of noncontiguous grains intersected on a metallographic plane by a line of unit length; N, is the number of noncontiguous grains per unit area; P is the mean free path between grains of dispersed phase; and f is the volume fraction of dispersed phase. Approximately 1000 grains were counted on each sample. For each composition d2 was plotted against P, the resulting straight lines serving as a check on the measurements. The distribution curves of the WC powders of different average diameters were homologous, and no attempt was made to influence the grain size by blending powders, adjusting the sintering conditions, or otherwise altering the particle size distribution. Densities were measured by differential weighings in air and water. The degree of densification did not vary consistently with either composition or grain size. The density is influenced by slight amounts of impurities, specifically by 0.1 to 0.2 pct Fe which enters the powders during ball milling. As an illus- -tration of the experimental variations, a number of measured densities are listed in Table I. They are expressed in percentage of theoretical density, as calculated from the published X-ray densities of WC and Co.' For the purpose of determining the transverse-rupture strength, rectangular test specimens (3/16x 3/8x3/4 in.) were broken by loading at the center of a 9/16 in. span. The average strength of five or more samples is reported for each composition and grain size. The compacts were ground on two parallel surfaces only. The load was applied at an average rate of 6,800 psi per sec. Since the elongation after fracture of the alloys is very small, it was assumed that the compacts deform elastically to failure and the fracture stress was calculated by the conventional beam formula. The data for one alloy are presented in Table II as an example of the results and scattering ranges encountered. The precision of the test, as measured by the average difference between duplicates, is of the order of 15,000 psi. The results are strictly comparable only to compacts prepared and tested in the manner described and of similar chemical composition and grain size characteristics. Unnotched Charpy specimens were used for impact testing. Each point represents the average of 3 to 20 samples, the larger number being used in an attempt to determine the influence of grain size. Considerable scatter was encountered, the range from lowest to highest value often amounting to 30 pct of the impact strength. The hardness is reported as a Ra reading, using a 60 kg load with diamond brale indenter. Compositions are given in weight percent.

ThiS note reports on the variation with temperature of critical stress for basal slip of binary solid-solution single crystals of indium and of thorium in magnesium. PROCEDURE Alloy single crystal spheres were acid machined to 3/8-in. diam cylinders with the basal planes of the crystals normal to the cylinder axis and then annealed at 810°K. STILFONTEIN and surrounding areas gave nega-tive results in all prospecting attempts since about 1904 when Goerz and Co., a forerunner of Union Corporation Ltd., first drilled in the region and on the farm Stilfontein. Subsequent efforts by African and European Investments Co. and Anglo American Corp. from 1934-37 were completely unsuccessful. Holes drilled by these companies on the farms Riet-fontein, Hessie, and Palmietfontein were stopped in the Lower Witwatersrand system without finding payable reefs. The results of gravimeter, ground magnetometer, and aerial magnetometer surveys are presented in the area, in and around the new Stilfontein Gold Mine, in the Klerksdorp District of the Transvaal in the Union of South Africa. The gravimeter and ground magnetic surveys were completed in 1947—48. The gravity anomalies suggested a block of Upper Witwatersrand quartzites faulted-up between denser rocks of dolomite and Ventersdorp lava. Boreholes S.T. 1, 2, and 3 were drilled in 1948 and, after penetrating the dolomite and Ventersdorp lava, entered Upper Witwatersrand quartzites and intersected the Gold Estates Reef and Vaal Reef. Subsequent drilling delineated the suboutcrop of the Vaal Reef and determined the main structure of this horizon. The gold content of the Vaal Reef was highly payable and shaft sinking is now in progress. The Stilfontein Gold Mining Co. has been formed and, up to date, f5,000,000 capital has been raised for plant, shaft sinking, and development. The payable Vaal Reef horizon extends further south from Stilfontein, the reef occurring at increasing depths. It is possible that at least another mine may be established on these deeper horizons. The farm Stilfontein 39 is situated in the Klerksdorp District of the Transvaal. This farm and the surrounding areas have been subjected to repeated programs of prospecting dating back to about 1904, when Goerz and Co., the forerunner of Union Corporation, Ltd., first drilled on the farm and in the surrounding areas. From 1934-37, numerous boreholes were drilled on the neighboring farms, Riet-fontein. Hessie. and Palmietfontein, by African and European Investment Co. and Anglo American Corp. All these efforts were completely unsuccessful, and nobody suspected any possible gold-bearing area on Stilfontein until about 1947, when a gravity traverse run by B. D. Maree on the main road, showed a negative gravity anomaly. During 1947-48, the writer's organization completed gravimeter and magnetic surveys on Stilfontein and Rieffontein. An area of negative gravity anomalies was mapped, and it was suggested that this could be caused by blocks of Upper Witwatersrand quartzites, of the average density of 2.65, faulted up between dolomites and Ventersdorp lavas, the density of both of these rocks being 2.8. Fig. 1 shows the geology of the area as mapped by L. T. Nel of the Geological Survey of South Africa. The boreholes on Stilfontein, with the exception of a single hole of Goerz and Co., were drilled after the completion of the geophysical survey. The grouping of the first boreholes S.T. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, clearly shows that these were located in the zone of negative gravity anomalies. Fig. 2 shows the gravity anomaly contours. Fig. 3 shows two sections across the gravity anomaly, together with the corresponding geological sections as obtained from boreholes. The close relation between gravity values and thickness of dolomite plus Ventersdorp lavas is striking. The two latter formations having the same density (2.8), act as one mass as far as gravity effects are concerned. Fig. 4 shows the magnetic anomalies observed on the ground by vertical magnetometers and at 500 ft abbve mean ground level by aerial magnetometer. The latter are anomalies of the total magnetic intensity. The magnetic results show that, on the farm Rietfontein and on the northern half of Stilfontein. Lower Witwatersrand magnetic shales were to be expected at relatively shallow depths. As the strongly

D R. GILLSON, who was born in Evanston, Ill., in 1895, is another one of those geologists who received his early inspiration and foundation in his science from that great teacher at Northwestern University, the late Professor U. S. Grant, and then went on to give his time and interest to Institute affairs-like those other Northwestern men, Arthur Blair, Gilbert Cady, Charlie Behre, Evan Just, Ian Campbell, Clayton Ball, and many others. After serving in the Navy in the first World War as, of all things for a geologist, a commissary officer on a transport, he went on to MIT and took his doctor's degree under Waldemar Lindgren in 1923. He even assisted in mineralogy at Harvard and thus had training under another great teacher, Charles Palache. He taught mineralogy and petrography at MIT from 1923 to 1928. After several summers of field work as an assistant in the U. S. Geological Survey, Dr. Gillson joined the staff of the du Pont company.
