The Offshore Technology Conference, the world's largest technical conference and exhibition on the development of offshore resources and protection of the ocean environment, is sponsored annually in Houston, Texas, by 12 international engineering and scientific societies. This year's OTC, the seventh, will be held May 5-8 at the Astrodomain, and will be the largest in its history. The technical program for the first meeting in 1969 consisted of 100 papers, an exhibit display of 380 booths, and an attendance of 4300. This year. 280 technical papers are to be presented, and more than 2800 exhibit booths, representing some 1200 companies and nine countries, will be on display for an anticipated audience of 40,000.

THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use of mineral substances to their benefit, but however that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans- mitted through instruction in the family. At fist such activities must have been merely a minor part of the making of a living, bit in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

The concept of sodium single-ion equivalent activity as developed by Gondouin, Tixier and Simard,' was used to determine the filtrate resistivity-activity relationships for 150 laboratory and 49 field drilling muds. With the exception of the native and phosphate high-resistivity muds and the calcium-treated muds, the filtrate resistivity-activity relationships were found to be within 20 per cent of that for pure sodium-chloride solutions. Gondouin, et al,* previously suggested a method of treating the high-resistivity muds in quantitative electrical log analysis. A new treatment is presented which uses the P-alkalinity of the filtrate as a correlating parameter in handling the calcium-treated muds in quantitative electrical log analysis. INTRODUCTION Gondouin, Tixier, and Simard in 1957 introduced new interpretive procedures for analyzing the self-potential curve of electric logging. They re-emphasized the previous work of the Schlumberger brothers, Wyllie and others, and re-defined the activity concept in terms of a number which they termed the effective resistivity. Their procedures are particuarly effective when the connate-water resistivities are less than 0.08 ohm-m or greater than 0.3 ohm-m. For gyp muds where the calcium content is known, a procedure was presented which allows calculation of the connate-water resistivity with improved accuracy. These procedures assume that one of the fluids in the system is a pure sodium-chloride solution, but they are not limited by the assumptions. For the fresh and saline connate waters, for instance, it is assumed that the drilling mud filtrate is a pure sodium-chloride solution. For the gyp mud interpretive procedure, it is assumed that the connate water is a pure sodium-chloride solution. Brown,' on the other hand, has suggested that it would be extremely fortuitous if drilling mud filtrates could all be treated electrochemically as sodium-chloride solutions, and he cites some examples where discrepancies exist. A study has been made of the deviations of sodium single-ion equivalent activities, an of drilling mud filtrates from that of pure sodium-chloride solutions. Drilling fluids in common use on the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and laboratory-controlled muds were investigated. Using a cell patterned after Gondouin, et al, (Fig. I), the equivalent activities were measured. It should be remembered here that the activity measured is merely an index which uses numbers that represent the sodium single-ion equivalent activity a,., of the mud filtrate. The membrane potential developed across the cell was determined with a null-type potentiometer. The resistivities of the solutions were measured by the four-electrode method. The resistivity system was calibrated by using saturated KC1 solution as a standard. Chemical properties of the drilling fluids studied were measured with standard API-approved equipment for the particular property in question. For the activity measurements, two shale discs were chosen to serve as cationic membranes. These two discs were both 1 1/4 in. in diameter and, respectively, 1/4 and 1/8 in. in thickness. The membrane potential, Em, was determined using the shale discs as cationic selective membranes separating two standard sodium-chloride solutions of known mean activity. Then by comparing the constant Km in the following equation, with the theoretical value of — 59 mv at 75OF, the perfection of the membrane was determined. The variation of Km for the two membranes used in this experimental work, as well as one of the many unsuitable membranes, is shown in Fig. 2. The measurement of the activity of mud filtrate involves the balancing of its combined individual activities against a standard solution of known mean activity. At the point where there exists zero potential across the membrane cell, the activity effects may be assumed equal for all practical purposes. HE who enters a mining claim within an Indian reservation of the United States of America acquires no rights thereby, because of the fact that the lands within such Indian reservation are not a part of the public domain, and cannot be located or acquired as mineral land. However, where such an entry is authorized as to a particular reservation by an Act of Congress, such claims as may be entered under such authorization are thereby segregated from the reservation, and the Indian title is extinguished. Under the Choctaw Constitution, any citizen of that nation, in other words any Choctaw Indian, who discovered a coal mine, acquired an exclusive right to all coal within a radius of 1 mile. The laws of the Chickasaw nation provided for the formation of corporations to develop coal and other mines, with authority to contract with others to develop and work the mines. Under these laws, leases were made; but Congress subsequently abrogated all existing leases, prohibited all persons from receiving royalties from such mines, and provided that all coal within the nation should remain the common property of the tribes. Such leases are now expressly prohibited by an Act of Congress (32 United States Statutes at Large, 655). All leases of mineral lands upon Indian reservations must now be made under regulations promulgated by the Secretary of the Interior, and the royalties must be paid into the United States Treasury for the benefit of the tribes. In Canada the Indians have no rights to the royal mines and minerals, and the government can make no stipulation with the Indians which would affect the rights of the Province in which the lands are situated. Therefore, while it is true that under our present law no rights can be acquired to a mining claim within an Indian reservation, it seems to be fully within the authority of Congress to make laws, giving such rights to mineral locators as it may deem necessary or expedient.

The latent hardening of silver and an Ag-Au alloy was investigated by lateral compression, overshoot in tension and cormpression, and the stability of multiple-slib orientations. The latent hardening of a secondary slip systenz depends on its relation to the primary slip system. For most secondary slip systems the latent hardening is larger for Ag-10 at. pct Au than for pure silver. The maximum increase in. flow stress on a secondary slip system over that of the primary slip system was 40 pct. The work hardening during the lateral-compression test on the latent system after prestress on the primary system is iuterbreted in terms of the preferential distribution of barriers to dislocation movement with respect to the active slip system in work-lzardened fcc crystals. The work-hardening in fcc crystals is mainly due to the dislocation interactions and the barriers to dislocation movement formed as a result of reactions between dislocations of different slip systems. The operation of sources on the latent system depends on the flow stress of those systems; hence, the increase in flow stress of a latent system due to glide on an active system, which is called latent hardening, is an important element in understanding the phenomenon of work hardening. The problem of latent hardening has attracted the attention of many investigators in the past. For example, a theoretical study of the elastic latent hardening of the latent systems due to glide on an operative system has been made by Haasen' and ~troh. These calculations, however, neglect the stress required for the intersection of forest dislocations by the glide dislocations, a factor which would be important for producing macroscopic strains on the secondary slip systems. The importance of this factor will become evident from the results presented here. Attempts have also been made to determine the latent hardening of different slip systems by experimental means by the methods summarized in Table I.3-9 The experimental methods used have been subject to certain limitations. For instance, in the method used by Hauser,9 frictional constraints between the specimen and the compression platen were not eliminated by proper lubrication (see Hos- ford10). Secondly, with the exception of Kocks,6 Hauser,9 and Rohm and Kochendorfer,11 latent-hardening studies have been made on only one of the slip systems, i.e., on either the conjugate or the coplanar slip system; hence, extensive results are not available on the latent hardening of different slip systems in the same materials, with the exception of aluminum.6 It was therefore decided to study the latent hardening of the conjugate, critical and half-related slip systems in silver. Similar experiments were done in Ag-10 at. pct Au to study the effect of solute (gold) on the latent hardening of silver. Lastly, indirect evidence can be obtained by a study of the orientation stability of crystals of multiple-slip orientations in tension and compression. This method has been used by Kocks6 to supplement his studies of latent hardening in aluminum. Similar studies were made at room temperature in single crystals of silver. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The single crystals of the desired orientations were grown and the tensile test specimens were prepared as described in Ref. 12. The compression tests were made on 1/4-in.-cube specimens. The specimens were cut from single crystals, in the Servomet spark-erosion machine.13 The two cut surfaces were planed using the lowest available planing rate in the machine to minimize the deformation layer. A brass strip was used as the planing tool. This method of preparation ensured plane parallel faces for the compression tests. The deformed material was removed by prolonged etching in a weak etching solution. A weak etching solution was used to prevent pitting of the surfaces and to ensure uniform etching. About 25 to 50 µ of material were removed from all faces by the etching treatment. The specimens were then annealed for 24 hr at 940°C in oxygen-free helium and cooled in the furnace to room temperature over a period of 7 hr. After annealing, the orientation of the specimens was determined by Laue back-reflection technique to make sure that no recrystallization had occurred on annealing. The compression-test technique and setup are described in Ref. 14. The Laue back-reflection technique was used to study the overshoot in tension, the overshoot in compression, and the stability of the axial orientation in tension and compression. The tests were interrupted after every few percent strain to determine the axial orientation. In investigating the overshoot in compression, the operative system was determined by studying the asterism of the Laue spots.

A $5000 contract to explore for asbestos in Marinette County. Wis., has been entered into between the Government and the Star Mining Co. of Madison, Wis. The Government will contribute 90 pct or $4500 to the cost of the project. The United States presently produces about 8 pct of its asbestos requirements. "Sulphur stockpiles are at a minimum for national security arid must not be further reduced," was the warning given by L. M. Williams, Jr., president of Freeport Sulphur Co. He stated that although the long-range outlook is favorable , current sulphur production cannot meet the demand and as a result the United States faces a crisis in the coming months.

ERLE VICTOR DAVELER, who in his application for membership in the Institute in 1909 modestly described himself as "millman," was born at Denver in 1885 and graduated from the University of California in 1907. After a few months' work at gold mills in California he went to Tonopah, where for the next two years he had a varied experience working on pumps, convey- ors, tube-mills and filters. For the following two years he was experimental foreman and metallurgical engineer for the Utah Copper Co. at Garfield. He was sent in 1911 to be assistant superintendent of mills at the Ray. From 1913 to 1917 he was mill superintendent at the striking but unsuccessful experiment in large-scale low-grade gold mining of the Alaska Gold Mines Co.

While many parts of Canada's pre-Cambrian shield are well served by railway, it is frequently necessary for prospecting purposes to proceed farther into areas inaccessible by rail. To such areas in summer the canoe was at one time the accepted means of travel for the prospector while the dog team was much used in winter. Although summer travel was much improved by the development of the outboard motor, the lack of facilities for cheap transportation has been a serious hindrance to the employment of capital in opening up the distant fields. The pre-Cambrian surface of Manitoba, like that of Ontario, is hummocky, with rounded hills and ridges of rock alternating with basinlike depressions and valleys occupied by lakes and rivers Or by many low-lying portions covered with muskeg' Routes to the mines have not usually been direct or easy and seasonal vagaries have presented problems in themselves. In summer, water transportation may be the cheapest method for the longer distances but it is not every water route that will satisfy the conditions of loading freight on to a boat or scow and of conveying it without interruption to its destination. By its location, a mine may require a large program of boat transportation in summer Over part of its route, to be followed by winter freighting for the remainder. In order to carry on development and produc- tion over a long period, it may be necessary to haul large quantities of supplies during the winter. This seasonal problem, particularly for the out-of-the-way properties, is SO important and demanding as to make it a major operation in the life of the mine. The -use of the tractor during winter months for heavy machinery and bulk supplies, and the use of the airplane throughout the year for the transportation of personnel and for emergency requirements, have greatly improved transportation to places that are inaccessible by rail. Canada has pioneered in both these methods. Development oF Transportation Twenty-two years have seen a marked change in transportation methods in Canada's mining country. Horse-drawn sleighs have given way to the tractor and that to some extent has been supplanted by the airplane. One of the earliest ventures involving transportation of considerable magnitude was that of the Mandy mine, on Schist at in northern Manitoba. According to accounts of early mining activities in Manitoba, the Mandy mine, beginning December 1916, had 3300 tons of ore hauled 40 miles by sleigh to Saskatchewan River and in summer this was conveyed by barge to The Pas, 130 miles, and then by railroad to Trail, British Columbia, 1200 miles. The mine shipped 6000 tons of ore in 1918 and 15,000 tons in 1919. In winter of the latter year, as many as 300 teams of horses were used on the 40-mile stretch to

THE Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (Public Law 552, 82nd Congress) was approved on July 16, 1952. It incorporates, as Title I, the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May 7, 1941 (Public Law 49, 77th Congress), which gave Federal inspectors only the right to enter coal mines for inspection and investigation purposes but no power to require compliance with their recommendations. Title II contains the enforcement provisions of the act; its purpose is to prevent major disasters in coal mines from explosions, fires, inundations, and man-trip or man-hoist accidents. At this point a brief account of events that pre- ceded the enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act seems appropriate. The hazardous nature of coal mining was recognized by the Federal Government as long ago as 1865, when a bill to create a Federal Mining Bureau was introduced in Congress. Little was done, however, until a series of appalling coal- mine disasters during the first decade of this century provoked a demand for Federal action. As a result an act of Congress established a Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior on July 1, 1910. The act made it clear that one of the foremost activities of the Bureau should be to improve health and safety in the mineral industries. One of the first projects selected by the small force of engineers and technicians then employed was to determine the causes of coal-mine explosions and the means to prevent them. By investigations after mine disasters the fundamental causes and means of prevention were soon discovered, and the coal mining industry was informed accordingly. However, despite this knowledge and the enactment of State laws and the Federal Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of 1941, mine disasters continued to occur with disheartening frequency and staggering loss of life. The devastating explosion at the Orient No. 2 mine on December 21, 1951, resulted in the death of 119 men. The Orient disaster rekindled the memory of the Centralia, I11., disaster of March 25, 1947, which caused the death of 111 coal miners. These two tragedies ultimately brought about enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.

A deposit Of limestone Was known to exist at a depth of 2000 ft under the property of the Columbia Chemical Division of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. at Barber-ton, Ohio. A 662-acre site was selected for the projected mine, some two miles northwest of the plant and near the main line of the Erie Railway. An electric railway 8800 ft in length connects the mine and the plant. The deposit is overlain by 18 ft of un-consolidated (sand and gravel), 100 ft of water-bearing sandstone, and finally 2080 ft of shale into which thin layers of sandstone are embedded. The limestone bed itself is 345 ft thick and overlies 200 ft of gypsum. A 300-ton-per-hour capacity mine was decided upon. Two shafts were deemed advisable, one for production and the second for service; and these were sunk 550 ft apart, one to a depth of 2323 ft and the other to 2258 ft. Each is 16 X , ft in the clear and timbered with 6-in. steel H-sets on 8-ft centers, using 3/8 X 4 X 4-in. angles as studdles. Twelve inch I-beams were used at 160 ft intervals as bearers set in deep hitches and concreted to a vertical depth of 8 ft. Wooden sheathing was first employed but sloughing of the shale created a pressure on this lining and finally concrete was deemed necessary. Water was encountered only within the first 315 ft, flowing at 60 gpm and by grouting this was reduced to 15 gpm. Temporary wooden sinking headframes were installed with 300 cu ft capacity storage pockets and with doors automatically controlled by air cylinders by hoistmen. Each shaft was operated on four 6-hr shifts. The usual V-cut was drilled at the center of the shaft and the round consisted of 34 holes- A 40 pet gelatin dynamite was employed with some 60 pet in the cut holes. Drilling crews consisted of four to six men. Shale drilled easily but became more bed in depth and sandstone wore away the gauge Of the bits rapidly. A room-and-pillar mining system was adopted whereby rooms turned off on 80-ft centers, each room 40-ft wide and 50-ft high. Rib pillars between rooms were cut into 100 ft lengths by frequent holes. Ventilation is achieved through the two shafts, the down-draft through the service shaft, and the return through the pr0duction shaft. The hoist has a a Of 300 tons per hour and is equipped with 10-ton balanced skips requiring. a 2-min cycle Or 30 trips Per hour- Hoisting is designed to Operate by automatic loading and no hoistman is required for normal Operation. The 48 X 60 in. jaw primary crusher is underground. It is fed through chute and chain feeders and is flood-oil lubricated and cooled. An inclined belt conveyor returns oversized material to the crusher. Tramming is by Diesel-powered trucks.

Residual deposits occur both as products of weathering and as products of hydrothermal decay. Products of Weathering That climatic conditions affect greatly both the rate and the results of weathering, is shown in temperate, polar, arid, and tropical regions, each of which will be considered separately. Weathering under Temperate Climates The decomposition of any rock is accomplished by the removal of the more soluble bases, and a concentration of the relatively insoluble oxides of iron, aluminum, and silicon. By reason of its somewhat greater solubility, silica is much more subject to removal than iron and alumina. The two important residual end products of weathering are sands and clays, the former consisting essentially of quartz, and the latter of kaolin and limonite.l When such deposits are formed in situ, the sands and clays are not separated, but remain as mixtures, which can be more or less perfectly separated by treatment with water. In such a separation, the ferric oxide or hydrate tends, by reason of its fine state of division, to remain with the clays and silts rather than the sands. While ferruginous sandstones are everywhere common, they are rarely rich enough in iron to become an ore without secondary concentration. Since the silica of these sandstones is completely crystalline quartz, it is much less liable to removal by solution than are the more soluble forms of partly amorphous chert and jasper, which have been removed on so large a scale from the Lake Superior iron formations.2 Moreover, the iron cement of sandstones, which constitutes the chief iron content of these rocks, is often a result of later infiltration, and not of original sedimentation. The process, of freezing is a simple example of this, as Tammann pointed out years ago.1Tammann held that the rate of freezing is determined by a rate of nucleation, expressed as the number of nuclei formed per unit volume of unfrozen liquid per second, and a rate of growth of these nuclei, expressed as the linear rate of radial growth in units of length per second. For isothermal freezing the conception is simple; for ordinary freezing, extending over a range of temperature, it is not as simple, for the values of the two constants must change with change in temperature. There is ample evidence that the postulated mechanism is correct even though a quantitative derivation of the rate of isothermal or of ordinary freezing in terms of the two constants has been lacking. In recent years other reactions have been found to proceed in a similar fashion. It has been well established, particularly by Bain,2-8 that the formation of pearlite from the eutectoid decomposition of the solid solu-tion austenite proceeds in such a way, and Polanyi and Schmid, Tammann and Crone, Parnop and Sachs, and others'-1 have shown that the process of recrystallization proceeds in a similar way. Isothermal reaction rates have been determined for eutectoid decom-position by a number of investigators. Bain's2-8 work on the formation of pearlite from austenite is especially valuable in this respect-the type of isothermal reaction curve obtained, as illustrated in Fig. 13, showed an initial slow rate, accelerating to an intermediate maximum rate which then decelerated to the completion of the reaction; similar curves have been obtained by Wever and his collaborators.' This paper presents the results of applying the Buckley-Leverett' displacement theory to petroleum reservoirs consisting of a finite number of layers. The layers are assumed to communicate only in the wellbores, and the reservoir may be represented as a linear system. Most previous investigations of this nature were limited by assumptions and by inconsistent calculation techniques. This study improves on previous work by applying the Buckley-Lev-erett displacement theory to a noncommunicating layered system where permeability, porosity, initial saturation, residual saturation and relative permeability vary from layer to layer in a logical and consistent manner. Gravity and capillary-pressure effects are neglected. A modification of the Higgins-Leighton calculation method was used in this study. Waterflood predictions were made with all properties varying, and then with only permeability varying using several inability ratios. These results were compared with the Stiles and Dykstra-Parsons predictions. It is shown that the latter methods generally give poor values for the breakthrough recovery and pessimistic predictions for the performance after breakthrough. Similar results were obtained for a gas-displacement case. lNTRODUCTION Field experience with immiscible displacement usually shows constant producing conditions until breakthrough of the displacing fluid. Then oil production continues at increasing displacing-to-displaced fluid ratios until the economic limit is reached. Three different ideal mechanisms are known that will produce this behavior: (1) relative permeability effects as described by Buckley-Leverett frontal advance theory,' (2) vertical stratification as considered by Stiles,2 Dykstra and Parsons5 and others and (3) different path lengths involved in areal (two-dimensional) flow between wells as described by Dyes et al.4 Without question, a combination of these factors modified by formation heterogeneity and other known and unknown factors actually does control the behavior of real systems. This paper presents results of an investigation of certain factors that should affect performance but which have received little attention to date. In 1944, Law5 demonstrated that porosity and perme- ability are often found to have normal and logarithmic-normal distributions, respectively. throughout cored intervals in natural formations. This led to the concept of the noncommunicating, multilayered reservoir model for immiscible displacement. This model assumes that the reservoir is composed of a number of layers that communicate only at the wellbores. Each layer is individually homogeneous, but may be different from every other layer. Stiles' presented one of the earliest applications of this model to waterflood performance. In addition, Stiles assumed that the initial saturations and relative permeabilities were the same for each layer, porosity was the same. displacement was piston-like, fluids were incompressible and injection into each layer was proportional to that layer's permeability capacity (permeability-thickness product). The last assumption would be true if the mobility ratio for the displacement were unity.21 Dykstra and Parsons" used the same model as Stiles, but rigorously included mobility ratios other than unity for piston-like displacement. Dykstra and Parsons used their general result to produce charts for log-normal permeability distributions between layers. Similarly, Muskat6 Pub1ished analytical solutions for linear and exponential permeability distributions. In 1959, Roberts' described a scheme for calculating water-drive performance for the noncommunicating, layered reservoir model which considered two-phase flow in the displaced region. Roberts used the same model and assumed that the injection rate into a layer was proportional to that layer's permeability capacity, but that flood front locations could be evaluated from the Dykstra-Parsons results. These assumptions are inconsistent, and a material balance cannot be maintained except for a mobility ratio of unity. At the same time, Kufus and Lynch8 coupled Buckley-Leverett displacement theory with the layered model to provide an improvement of the Dykstra-Parsons method that was consistent. In 1960, Higgins and Leighton9 resented a numerical method for calculating waterflood performance also considering two-phase flow in the displaced region. The result was used to investigate variation in absolute permeability and oil viscosity. An excellent, detailed history of using the noncomrnunicating, layered reservoir model was presented by Nielsen.'" The preceding techniques (and many related ones) were similar in that differences in initial saturations, residual saturations and relative permeabilities from layer to layer were neglected. Self-diffusion in zinc at temperatures below 200°C has been studied using both single crystal and polycrystal samples. Anomalous results were obtained for single crystal samples, the data indicating that in some cases grain boundary diffusion predominated. These anomalous results are presumed to be due to low angle lineage boundaries in the single crystals. When volume diffusion occurred in either single or polycrystal samples, the values for the diffusion coefficient were as much as several orders of magnitude larger than would be expected from high temperature data. ONSIDERABLE work has been done on self-^-*diffusion at temperatures in the neighborhood of two thirds of the melting temperature (in OK) and higher, but very little has been done at lower temperatures. This is particularly true of self-diffusion in single crystals. This paper reports work on self-diffusion in zinc at temperatures below 200 °C where both polycrystalline and single crystal samples have been used. The measurements were made using both the sectioning and absorption techniques. The experiments on diffusion at low temperatures were initiated primarily for three reasons: to obtain data from single crystal diffusion covering a wide range of temperatures, to obtain values of the activation energy for grain boundary diffusion, and to obtain, if possible, a lower limit to the temperatures at which the absorption technique may be used. It is possible to determine whether volume or grain boundary diffusion predominates at low temperatures by analyzing the manner in which the concentration of the diffusing atoms varies with the depth of penetration. The analysis is possible only for the sectioning technique. For volume diffusion and for the boundary conditions of the present experiment, the curve of the logarithm of the concentration, C, vs the square of the penetration depth, x, is a straight line with the slope proportional to — 1/D. If grain boundary diffusion predominates, Fisher' has shown that a curve of In C vs the first power of the penetration depth should be a straight line. This linear dependence of concentration on depth has been observed experimentally by several investigators. (See, for example, refs. 3 and 4.) Following Fisher's analysis, the grain boundary diffusion coefficient can be written as where 8 is the grain boundary width, D, is the volume diffusion coefficient at the temperature involved, t is the time of diffusion, C is the concentration of diffusing material, and x is the depth of penetration. A more general analysis employing the same model as Fisher's but with fewer assumptions has been given by Whipple.' In contrast to Fisher's analysis the more general analysis of Whipple does not always yield a straight line relation between In C and x. Recently Turnbull and Hoffman have discussed both analyses and have applied the Fisher-Whipple model to a more refined dislocation model of the grain boundary. They have also discussed the possibility of a large effect of grain boundary direction on diffusion. In the case of the absorption technique, for which results are also given, one simply gets a value for the diffusion coefficient with no indication of the predominating mechanism. Experimental Techniques Single crystals of 99.99+ pct Zn were grown using a modified Bridgman method. Polycrystal samples were prepared in three grain sizes (small, about 4 mm2; medium, about 9 mm'; and large, about 25 mmz) by quenching, air cooling, and furnace cooling. The grains of the polycrystalline samples tended to be columnar, with some preferred texture such that the c-axis was inclined at about 20" to 25" from the normal to the diffusion face, particularly in the medium and large grain size samples. The samples were cut from the rod, polished, and heavily etched, and faces cut accurately parallel using a jeweler's lathe. They were again etched to remove the lathe smear and annealed for 3 hr at 250" to 300°C. After annealing, they were etched, examined, and the orientation determined by Laue back reflection photographs. They were then electroplated with Zn. The plated surfaces were examined for uniformity; nonuniform coatings were removed by etching and the samples replated without additional preparation. For the diffusion anneals, the samples were placed in pairs, with active faces together, in evacuated Pyrex tubes. At the conclusion of my paper on the same subject read at the Boston meeting of the Institute, I offered to send some of sample No. 2 to any chemist who wished to analyze it. Eight chemists wrote to me for samples; so far I have received results from five. I give these results in a table (on the following page), together with the results previously obtained: As to the chemists and their methods : K is an iron-works chemist whom I only know by correspondence; lie writes: "No. 27(13.64) was obtained by the method I generally use, as follows : Dissolve 0.8 grams spiegel in hydrochloric acid and a little potassium chlorate, in a half-liter flask. Boil off most of the acid, add ammonia in slight excess, redissolve in acetic acid, using rather more than is really necessary, and then add 8 or 10 grams of sodium acetate and make up to the mark with warm water. Boil hard for fifteen minutes, then allow to settle (cool?), until the liquid reaches the mark, and withdraw 300 C.C. of the nearly clear liquid. Add to this an excess of hydrochloric acid, evaporate to dryness, take up with hydrochloric acid and water, and separate the iron by two precipitations with ammonia (I have often tested the ferric hydrate for manganese, but have never found any, if the separation by ammonia was properly made). Finally, precipitate the manganese as phosphate." Nos. 28, 29 (13.35, 13.07) were by Ford's method." No. 30 (13.50) was by Troilus's method He writes, " I may add the results are quite as good as I expected, although for any element except manganese, they are not close enough for anything like accurate work."
