One of the problems studied by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Washington has been the re-treatment of table middlings. Hydraulic classification has given the best results. Instead of using the classifier to prepare the feed to the tables, as has been the practice for many years in ore dressing, it is used to separate part of a middling product that cannot be re-treated successfully on the table. Middlings are desirable in a table plant because the separation according to specific gravity is incomplete; that is, in the products of the table there is always an overlapping of free particles of coal and refuse that can be distinguished with heavy liquids such as are used in the float-and-sink test. The causes of this overlapping may be divided into two groups, those outside the table separation itself and those inherent in the table separation. The first of these groups includes, among other causes, the following: (1) poor adjustments of the table, (2) overloading or underloading the table, (3) irregularities in the quantity and quality of the feed, (4) irregularities in the power and water supply, and (5) a vertical dancing motion of the table deck due to weak foundations. These causes of overlapping are largely unnecessary in a properly designed and constructed plant; but whenever they are present they materially affect the character of the middling product, and hence the problem of re-treatment. The other group includes three additional causes: (6) small differences in specific gravity between coal and impurities, (7) a size-specific-gravity relationship of the coal and refuse particles in the table feed such that the sizing action of the table opposes the separation according to the specific gravity, and (8) shapes of particles that prevent a separation. The sixth, small differences in specific gravity, may be a very important reason for an incomplete separation. The change in specific gravity from coal to shale is always gradual and the designation of one part as coal and another part as refuse is arbitrary. This idea must have been more widespread than either of us knew, for some five years ago a writer of verse for one of the comic papers dealt with it at great length. A method is developed for improving the low recovery efficiency which results when viscous oils are flooded by water. Viscous oil has been diluted with a lighter liquid miscible in it in any ratio which produces a mixture possessing a reduced viscosity and which is then displaced by water. Light gasoline was used in these tests to reduce the viscosity of the oil in place. Oils possessing viscosities in the range of 1.28 to 324 cp at the test temperature of 30C were displaced from a cylindrical unconsolidated sand core, with a length of 2 m (6.6 ft) and a diameter of 10 cm (3.9 in.) at a flood of 6.27 cc/sq cm/hr. In two test series up to I PV of light gasoline was injected into the core before water flooding. In the first series the recovery of a low-viscosity oil (1.28 cp) increased as the volume of light gasoline was increased. However, only the oil which could not be recovered by water flooding alone could be replaced by the light gasoline. In the other series, the recovery of a more viscous oil (13.5 cp) was not increased even if large quantities of light gasoline were injected. An oil bank built up ahead of the water front so that the flood water met with equivalent saturation conditions, as would be the case in flooding solely with water. However, the recovery of more viscous oils could be increased substantially when the core was first flooded with water, followed by a slug of light gasoline, and then flooded with water again. Furthermore, an oil bank ,built up ahead of the second water front. The formation of this oil bank is particularly favorable for the displacement process; the greater part of the light gasoline injected was pushed out of the core ahead of the oil and recovered. Using a light oil of low viscosity, it was possible to replace only the residual oil that could not be recovered by water flooding by the light gasoline. As the basic study had shown that highly viscous oils could be recovered by flooding first with water, then with light gasoline, followed by a second injection of water, the study was extended by tests made with reservoir fluids and cores taken from the low-gravity oil reservoir of the Wietze field, Germany. A great increase in recovery over flooding with water alone was obtained in these tests. The results may show a way to recover high-viscosity oils by a comparatively simple flooding procedure. INTRODUCTION In fields where oil recovery has not benefited from natural water drive, increased recovery may be obtained by the injection of water into the reservoir, especially in the case of fields which produce high-gravity, low-viscosity oil. There is a rather close relation between the viscosity of the reservoir fluid and the recovery that can be obtained by water flooding. As the viscosity increases the oil recovery decreases proportionately, so that an oil viscosity about 30 times that of water is generally considered to be the upper limit for an economically successful water flood.' This limitation has been recognized theoretically by Buckley and Leverett,' and has been verified by numerous laboratory flooding tests, such as by Croes and Schwarz,V n the viscosity ratio range of oil to water from 1 to 500. The reason for the inferior recovery of viscous oils by water flooding can best be understood by considering the mechanism of flood tests. In such tests water is introduced into one end of a sand-packed tube which is saturated with oil of the viscosity to be tested, and oil is produced from, the other end. Oil, with a viscosity lower than that of water, is pushed ahead of the advancing water with considerable uniformity, and irregularities in the displacement process tend to be eliminated as the oil saturation decreases and the water saturation increases. However, oil recovery is not complete, for the water forms interfaces with the oil and traps residual oil droplets in certain of the pore spaces. These residual oil droplets are distributed rather uniformly through the sand, and they are not susceptible to recovery regardless of the amount of water passed through the test cylinder. In the case of an oil possessing a viscosity greater than that of water, the injected water tends to move irregularly through the sand in the test cylinder. At the place in the sand where initial water movement takes place, resistance to the movement of water is lowered and the water finger so formed will grow perceptibly; it will extend to the outlet end of the test cylinder so that a breakthrough of water takes place long before much of the oil-saturated volume of the sand has come in contact with water. Once the breakthrough of water takes place, the water-oil ratio is gradually approaching the economic limit, even though much of the oil in the test cylinder remains unaffected by water. Disconnected drops of oil are trapped in the portion of the sand that has been invaded by water, just as when an oil of low viscosity is flooded. The poor recovery of the more viscous oils, therefore, is due to the irregularity of water movement through the test cylinder, and the rate of water movement through restricted sections of the oil-saturated sand increases with the more viscous oils. THAT small amounts of impurities have a harm-J- ful effect on the malleability of metals and alloys is well-known. One common type of em-brittlement involves the formation of a small quantity of eutectic at the grain boundaries, and is typified by sulfur embrittlement of nickel. Another example of eutectic embrittlement—sulfur embrittlement of cobalt—is described in this report. In the preparation of specimens for a study of Co-Pt alloys, it was observed that the hot swagabil-ity of the alloys appeared to be influenced by the grade of cobalt used as melting stock. The cause of the hot-shortness was not traced to any particular impurity, although sulfur was suspected.' The damaging action of sulfur on the malleability of cobalt has not been generally recognized,'; in spite of the fact that the Co-S phase diagram8 eveals the same basic conditions—low solubility and eutectic formation—responsible for sulfur embrittlement of iron and nickel.7, 8 Apparently sulfur embrittlement has not been a serious problem in the fabrication of cobalt alloys. One related factor is likely the limited commercial experience with high cobalt alloys, since the predominant use of cobalt has been in alloys containing less than 75 pet Co. A series of Co-S alloys was prepared and studied to establish the effect of sulfur on the hot working characteristics of cobalt. Specimens, 5/8 in. diam by 4 in. long, were prepared by vacuum melting in magnesium oxide crucibles and casting in a copper mold. Two grades of low sulfur electrolytic cobalt were used as the basic material for the study, one from Johnson, Matthey and Co. and the other from the International Nickel Co. Each contained about 99.5 pet Co and had a nominal sulfur content under 0.005 pet. The sulfur was added initially as cobalt sulfide powder. Later, some low sulfur alloys were prepared by diluting the high sulfur alloys with cobalt. Trouble was experienced in controlling the sulfur content. Apparently much of the cobalt sulfide powder was lost during melting, as most of the samples contained a lower sulfur content than was added. The alloys were evaluated for hot brittleness by heating to 1000°C in a hydrogen furnace and swaging in air. The results of these tests are summarized in Table I. All the alloys containing less than 0.008 pet S were successfully hot swaged to 1/4 in. diam. The bars containing more than 0.015 pet S could not be swaged because of the formation of intercrystal-line cracks similar to those illustrated in Fig. 1. Examination of the microstructure of the cast bars revealed cobalt sulfide eutectic at the grain boundaries, Fig. 2. The sulfide was not always continuous at grain boundaries in bars that were hot embrittled but, in general, the particles did form a network that could account for the brittleness above the eutectic temperature, 880°C. There is no question about the brittle nature of a specimen exhibiting a continuous sulfide network such as is shown in Fig. 2b, though a sulfide distribution similar to that in Fig. 2a is marginal. This particular bar cracked when hot-swaged. However, other bars with lower sulfur content but with some sulfide phase at grain boundaries were successfully worked. The reduction of area of a hot tensile test specimen was also found to be a sensitive indicator of sulfur embrittlement. The variation of reduction of area with sulfur content is shown in Fig. 3 for specimens fractured at 900°C in an evacuated capsule. The ductility of cobalt is greatly reduced when the sulfur content exceeds 0.005 pet. Similar results were obtained for alloys tested at 800°C, below the eutectic temperature. Butte mining district is situated in Silver Bow County, in the southwestern part of Montana. Butte originated as a placer mining camp, gold having been discovered in 1864, on Silver Bow Creek, near the southerly end of what is now Main Street. The Butte placer gold was heavily alloyed with silver, and only commanded $13 an ounce. Placer mining was vigorously prosecuted along Silver Bow Creek and its tributary gulches for about 5 years, at the end of which time, in 1870, the Butte camp was practically deserted. In the meantime, the quartz veins prominently traceable over the hillsides were located, the first location, July 12, 1864, being made by the Missoula Mining Co. and called the Missoula Lode Claim, and later relocated by G. 0. Humphreys. Reasoning from the presence of the gold placers, free milling gold and silver ores were eagerly looked for by the early prospectors. Claims covering the great Rainbow and other silver lodes were located in the 60's. The presence of valuable silver ores in these veins caused the staking of many claims, believed to be valuable only for silver, but which later, at depth, proved to be enormous copper producers.

The activities of both components and the partial and integral molar thermodynamic properties of mixing for the liquid Al-Ge system at 1200°K and for the gertnanium-rich Al-Ge liquidus have been determined from data for eighteen alloys of compositions in the range 0.0593 < 0.880 using the reuersible gal-vanic. cell in the temperature interval 9320 to 1258°K. The liqui-dus compositions above 93 2 °K loere also ve determined by observing the discontinuities in the C us T plots for the high-melting alloys. This system shows moderate negative deviation from ideality throughout, the values for y° being 0.212 and 0.189 for aluminum and germanium, respectively, at 1200°K. Pavtial molar Properties of aluminum on the germanium-rich solidus and at infinite dilution in Ge(s) oboue 932°K were estimated from the foregozng measurements and the equlibrium data of previous investzgators. RECENT compilations of data1" have shown an increasing demand for knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of mixing of metallic alloy systems. In the case of binary-liquid systems where one of the components is a semiconductor this information is useful because, primarily, properties of the second (dopant) component on the liquidus, solidus, and at infinite dilution may be determined more accurately than from calculations based on the phase diagram. In this investigation a reversible galvanic cell was used to determine the chemical potential of aluminum in the two-phase region, liquid + [Ge], on the germanium-rich side of the A1-Ge system in the temperature range 932" to 1193°K. In addition, similar measurements for homogeneous liquid A1-Ge alloys for the entire composition range were obtained for the temperature interval 932" to 1258°K. The cell used was: The experimental technique and the treatment of the data were essentially the same as described earlier394 and are elaborated upon only briefly here. Each cell consisted of a liquid aluminum anode and three A1-Ge alloy cathodes of different composition which were held in Morganite alumina crucibles. The alloys were made up from aluminum and germanium weighed to the nearest 0.1 mg to a total weight of 5 to 10 g. Aluminum was a gift of Aluminum Co. of America and had a purity of 99.995+ pct. Germanium of transistor grade was a gift of Bell Telephone Laboratories. The four electrodes were contained in a larger alumina crucible which also held the prepurified fused chloride electrolyte. Contact to the electrodes was made by tantalum wire leads sheathed in alumina. The tantalum leads were centered in the electrodes by suitable positioning of an alumina radiation shield which fitted on the top of the - alulnina crucible. Two chrome l-alumel thermocouples, sheathed in quartz wells, completed the internal cell arrangement. The entire assembly was enclosed in an alumina tube, fitted with a water-cooled copper head so the system could be evacuated and then flushed with purified argon. *

A primary factor in the selection of coals for making coke at high temperatures is the amount of pressure the coal will exert upon the oven walls when carbonized in modem by-product ovens.l-3 This factor has become increasingly important in recent years because of demands for increased throughput and higher coke yields. As a result of the increasing necessity for assessing coals in regard to their carbonization pressures, more and more research work is being directed toward developing labora-tory-scale tests for predicting carbonization pressures and for showing how blends of coking coals may be modified to eliminate pressures liable to damage coke-oven walls. The specific reasons have never been defined as to why some blends of coking coals develop dangerous carbonization pressures and others do not, therefore specific procedures to eliminate dangerous pressures could not be prescribed. It is true that the major processes occurring during carbonization have been described by many writers,4 and there is a general agreement on the ideas of the changes that occur as coal is transformed into coke. However, there is little evidence relating the processes occurring during carbonization to the pressure developed and the available evidence is very incomplete and often contradictory. This deficiency arises in part from the fact that the fundamental causes of pressure development have not been defined, at least from experimental data, and in turn this is the result of the lack of satisfactory testing equipment for studying the problem. Operating experience has shown several ways of reducing or eliminating dangerous pressures,5 but probably none of these ways is applicable to all blends of coking coals, and such empirical methods often lead to production of inferior coke. They are trial-and-error methods, not designed to remedy specific causes of pressure development. The number of laboratory-scale testing devices designed to estimate the carbonization pressures that result when coals are carbonized in commercial ovens is probably well over a hundred.6 Few of these instruments have remained in use for any length of time, either because the predictions were not sufficiently accurate or, more often, because too many exceptions were found. Often testing devices are operated without any attempt at duplication of conditions in commercial ovens and erroneous and contradictory results are frequently obtained. Therefore, it has seemed desirable to study the properties of coal itself and to determine any relationships between the properties of the coal and the carbonization pressures developed. An experimental program was carried out to improve the low-temperature ductjlity of tungsten through the combined use of dispersed oxides for grain-size control and Groups VII and VIII metal additions for matrix softening. Separate binary -alloy studies showed that increasing amounts of finely dispersed thoria or zirconia and critical amounts of rhenium, osmium, and iridium were effective in significantly reducing the ductile-to -brittle bend transition temperature of tungsten as well as in increasing its re crystallization temper - LIKE most of the high-melting point bcc metals, tungsten undergoes a marked transition from ductile to brittle behavior with decreasing temperatures. The material factors which influence the transition temperature include grain size, metal purity, and the presence of dispersed phases. ature and decreasing its recrystallized grain size. The beneficial effects shown by each of these additions on transition temperature and grain size in binary combinations appeared to be additive in tevnary combinations. Thus, combined additions of 2 to 8 vol pct thoria with 5 pct Re, 0.87 pct Os, or 0.30 pct Ir were effective in lowering the transition temperature of tungsten pom 2000 to 75"C, increasing its re crystallization temperature from 1600 to 1800°C, and decreasing its recrystallized gain size from 1175 to 6800 grains per sq mm. The mechanism by which these factors are operable in tungsten is not yet clearly understood. Nevertheless, it has become increasingly apparent that the interrelationship of grain size and matrix composition governs to a large extent the degree of low-temperature ductility which can be achieved. Though it is not possible to accurately assess the relative importance of these variables, the available evidence suggests that, at low temperatures, grain-size effects predominate over purity effects. This was indicated in recent studies by Allen, Maykuth, and Jaffee,&apos; involving single crystals containing 20 to 40 ppm 0 and 1 to 30 ppm C. Thus, while each

In these days of high wages, high cost of supplies, and high taxes, operators are even more inclined to accord consideration to innovations or improvements, and many go so far as to employ men to conduct special investigations and make studies for the purpose of advancing production. A discussion of the various factors affecting the accuracy of volume fraction determination by the direct comparison X-ray diffraction method is presented. To minimize errors introduced by nonrandomization effects such as preferred orientation and large grain size, as well as errors introduced by statistical effects, an iterative mathematical analysis is introduced. This analysis is applied to all observable diffractio~ spectra from a given specimen by means of computer techniques and is statistically superior to the standard direct comparison technique which utilizes only one or tm sets of intensity spectra. The computer program also presents a graphical interpretation of- the results which enables the investigator to visualize and readily assess the scatter in volume fraction estimates caused by deviations from randomness. Finally, the iterative analysis is applied to experimental data collected from a series of plain carbon steels in both the as-received and spheroidized conditions to determine the volume fraction of cemen-tite present in each case. The results show markedly good agreement with chemical analyses for all spheroidized specimens. In theory, quantitative X-ray diffraction is a power-ful analytical technique for precise determination of the volume fractions of various phases present in a multiphase poly crystalline aggregate. There are two generally used methods; both utilize the fact that the intensity of a diffraction line of a particular phase is a function of volume fraction of that phase present in the aggregate. The more common method is the so-called internal standard technique where a known amount of standard substance is mixed with the aggregate containing the unknown. The resulting ratio of the intensity of a particular diffraction line of the unknown to the intensity of a diffraction line from the standard is used to find the weight fraction of unknown material by reference to the intensity data obtained from a previously prepared set of standards containing the same amount of standard material. The details of this technique are outlined in standard works on X-ray diffraction.&apos; The disadvantages of the technique are that it requires the use of powder specimens and that the powder mixture must be homogeneous near the surface to the maximum effective beam depth. The alternative technique is the direct comparison method in which the ratio of the intensity of a diffraction line of a phase in the aggregate to the intensity of a second-phase diffraction line yields the ratio of the volume fractions of each phase present. This method has been applied most extensively to the determination of the percentage of retained austenite in martensitic steels and to determining the amounts of hcp and fcc allotropic modifications in pure cobalt5 and the amounts of hexagonal and rhombohedra1 modifications in graphite.8 This method is applicable to bulk as well as powder aggregates and is the technique which will be considered in the following text. It is the purpose of the present communication to show that by combining the results of X-ray diffrac-tometry with the use of high-speed digital computers the results of the direct comparison quantitative X-ray analysis technique can be optimized by using all of the data available on a diffraction pattern. THEORETICAL DISCUSSION In optimizing any quantitative X-ray diffraction experiment, the problem of accuracy vs time to collect and analyze the experimental data arises. For any method to be practical, it is required that both experimental and analytical procedures are reasonably short. In most of the previous work performed by the direct comparison method, intensity data from only one or two sets of peaks were used to calculate the volume fraction of phases present in the aggregate. Consequently, rather long-time experimental measurements are required to assure that the intensity data are sufficiently accurate to justify the use of one or two sets of data. By using computer techniques to analyze the experimental data it becomes feasible to use all of the available data on a diffraction pattern. By so doing, the time spent in measuring any one diffraction maxima can be appreciably reduced. Although this results in poor counting statistics for any one maxima, the number of data points available for analysis is greatly increased. Based on the above discussion, it will be assumed that a continuous scanning counter-diffractometer technique will be used to collect intensity data from a two-phase mixture. The integrated intensity of the ith diffraction line from the a phase in the aggregate is given by:&apos;" where is the volume fraction of the a phase, The various quantities in Eq. [la] are angular independent while those in [lb] depend on the hkl spectrum of a particular phase. The meaning of the individual quantities in Eqs. [la] and [lb] are given in Appendix 1. It is convenient at this point to outline briefly the factors which will affect the measured intensity of any one hkl spectrum. a) Extinction effects arise from two independent experimental conditions. I would like to ask Bob Merrill whether he considers that horizontal concave curvature of a slope has any stabilizing effect, such as Jenike 1 suggested several years ago. The stabilizing effect is due to the restraint offered to radial movement by the curvature. We found in laboratory tests that if we constrained the rock with the same stresses as those measured in the pit then it would sustain a maximum stress about two or four times greater than when the same rock type was unconstrained. We are therefore definitely of the opinion that a constrained situation in a slope is favorable towards stability.

The first develops the formulae and method needed to calculate the size, nu)nber, spacing, and volume fraction of hard or inert particles in the interior of a specimen from measurernents made on an extraction replica; throughout, the spread of- particle sizes in a single specimen is taken into account, and the extraction efficiency of the replica is considered. A method for testing whether the particles are randotnly distributed in space is described, and the spacing of randomly distributed particles is discussed. The second Part describes the application of the method to copper containing spherical particles of silica; the description includes an estimate of the errors involved, and a comparison of this with alternative methods. All parameters except uolume fraction can be determined satisfactorily, and the method offers advantages over other electron-,rzicroscopic techniques when dealing with hard particles in a softer matrix, or inert particles in a chem-ically less inert matrix. 1 HE experimental measurement of sizes and numbers of discrete particles of a second phase embedded in a matrix material from opaque, plane sections has been considered by many authors, notably by Fullman.&apos; It is assumed that, when the specimen is sectioned, the particles are also sectioned, so that the diameters of the circles of intersection of particles with the plane of the cross section ("surface diameters") are measured. It is difficult to derive the distribution of true particle diameters ("volume diameters") from measurements of the distribution of "surface diameters" on a plane section. The measurement of size and numbers of small second-phase particles by transmission electron microscopy through thin foils of matrix containing the particles has been described by Cahn and ~uttin~&apos; and by ~illiard.~ Because of overlap and the fact that particles which intersect the foil surface may be sectioned whereas those in the bulk of the foil are not, it is again difficult to measure the true distribution of particle sizes. The use of replicas for this sort of measurement has not been analyzed in detail. A replica made from an opaque cross section, thus replicating the circles of intersection of particles with the plane of section, is analyzed by Fullman&apos;s method and suffers from the same difficulties. Under certain circumstances, however, extraction replicas can be used, and offer a special advantage in that they make the determination of the true distribution of particle diameters particularly simple. It is the purpose of this paper to describe this extraction replica method. Consider the example of an alloy consisting of SiOz particles, whose mean diameter is about 1000A, dispersed in a copper matrix. When the alloy is sectioned and mechanically polished, the particles are not sectioned, because they are much harder than the matrix, and so will be either left in the surface or pulled out whole, and because the particle size is smaller than the abrasive size of even the finest abrasive. The particles are chemically inert in solutions which chemically etch or electropolish the matrix, so that chemical treatments do not section the particles either. (Experimental measurements of particle shape in this alloy confirm this—truncated particles are never seen.) Small, hard or inert, particles are therefore not sectioned when the specimen is sectioned and polished. An extraction replica taken from this polished surface shows the true "volume" diameter of each extracted particle; the distribution of diameters seen on the replica is the surface distribution of true "volume" diameters, and the volume distribution of true "volume" diameters is easily derived from it. The extraction replica method is not subject to the difficulties associated with sectioning of particles, and avoids the problem of overlap from which the transmission method suffers. The method is well-suited for studying hard particles in a soft matrix. Examples are provided by internally oxidized alloys, oxide-dispersion strengthened metals like T.D. Nickel, and carbides, nitrides, and strong intermetallic compounds in metals. It should be possible to adapt polishing techniques in alloys containing softer but inert particles to avoid sectioning the particles (say by electropolishing or etching). The method is tested and illustrated in Sections 8 and 9 by applying it to a dispersion of spherical SiO2 particles in a copper matrix. AT elevated temperatures the oxide of silver is unstable in the air at atmospheric pressure, consequently no external oxide scale forms upon pure silver under conditions of high-temperature annealing When small quantities of certain alloying elements are present in the silver, the formation of a thin external scale is possible&apos; and in addition there may form a subscale composed of the oxide of the solute element precipitated within the body of the silver Norbury2 and Leroux and Raub3 have reported internal oxidation (subscale formation) in alloys of silver with 2, 7 5, and 30 per cent of copper The presence of the subscale is believed to be responsible, at least in part, for the objectionable "fire mark" in Sterling silver&apos; Several other alloys of silver, after oxidizing heat-treatments, are known to exhibit undesirable polishing characteristics that may be the result of internal oxidation Except for the absence of an external scale of silver oxide, it is to be anticipated that silver alloys will prove to be very similar in their oxidation behavior to the alloys of copper, the oxidation characteristics of which have been studied in some detail 5,6 The present research confirms this anticipation The oxidation of a series of 20 dilute alloys of silver has been studied metallographically, some types of subscale not encountered among the copper alloys have been found Instances of internal oxidation in alloys of most of the metals of the I-b and VIII groups of the periodic system are on record, but evidence of this type of oxidation in alloys of the metals of the intermediate groups is lacking A number of the metals of the intermediate group, among them cadmium, lead, tin, and zinc, appear to provide the conditions essential to subscale formation, i e , they form oxides with a relatively low negative free energy of formation, they dissolve other metals that form more stable oxides, and, presumably, oxygen will diffuse through them In a study of 4o alloys of these white metals only a few cases of internal oxidation have been found The probable reasons for this difference in behavior will be discussed presently EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Silver -The silver alloys employed in the oxidation studies were prepared in heats of 30 grams each from high-purity silver (99 993 per cent Ag)* and the purest avail-

A previously reported high-resolution method for the location of boron-rich areas in metallurgical and biological specimens was been adapted for general use on a routine basis. The rnetlzod utilizes neutron activation and autoradiograpizy. Alpha-particles emitted by boron nuclei upon neutron capture are recorded on a photographic emulsion. The resulting a-particle tracks show the location of boron-rich areas. Experimental techniques, interferences, and limitations of the method are discussed in detail. The method is most useful where there is marked segregation of boron. In this type of sample, the segregation can be observed when the nominal boron concentration is as low as 0.0006 pct. THE positive identification and location of boron-rich areas in metals is frequently of great interest in metallurgical work. Unequivocal identification is often difficult to make by conventional metallo-graphic methods. Recently, a method has been described which accomplishes this objective by neutron activation and autoradiography.l-3 The method can be described briefly as follows. Upon neutron capture, a -particles are emitted by boron nuclei according to the following reaction: ,Blo + n - ,a4 + 3Li7 + 2.4 mev The energy is dissipated as kinetic energy of the products. By irradiating a boron-containing sample in contact with a photographic emulsion and subsequently developing this emulsion, a-particle tracks are obtained whose location corresponds to the location of boron-rich areas in the sample. Two factors combine to make the reaction extremely specific for boron. The first is the unusually high (755 barns) cross section of boron for thermal neutron capture. The second is the higher neutron energy required to produce (n, a ) reactions in essentially all other nuclei except lithium. These two factors make the method specific for boron by six to seven orders of magnitude when a predominantly thermal neutron source such as the Brookhaven reactor is used. The reported limit of detection of this method is of the order of 0.01 pct B., The present work was originally undertaken to determine whether this limit could be lowered by use of a thinner emulsion. However, initial experiments showed that in order to use the method at all, it was necessary to reestablish the optimum experimental conditions in terms of the available irradiation facilities. It is the purpose of this paper to describe these experimental conditions in detail, to discuss the factors influencing sensitivity, and to evaluate several techniques for increasing sensitivity. EXPERIMENTAL A) Preliminary Experiments—The first measure-ments were made using samples of crystal oriented silicon steel containing various concentrations of boron. In the later experiments, samples of various high-temperature alloys such as M-252, hcoloy 901, Nichrome V, and so forth, were used. Faraggi, et al.,2 reported that the lower limit of sensitivity in this type of sample was about 0.01 pct B using nuclear emulsions of 50- u thickness. but that it should be possible to extend this limit by the use of thinner emulsions. Accordingly, we first used Kodak Auto-radiographic Stripping Film (Permeable Base) which has an emulsion thickness of only 5 µ. This was mounted on the metallographic specimens according to the technique described by Boyd.4 The emulsion remained in contact with the metal surface throughout exposure and development. Since the emulsion is transparent after development, the autoradiograph and metal surface can be viewed simultaneously and any correlation between film blackening and structure of the metal can be made directly with no problems of realignment. Because the silicon steel is readily attacked by moisture alone, it was necessary to apply a protective coating to the metal surfaces before mounting the emulsion. The coating was made extremely thin in order to absorb as few a-particles as possible. Boyd4 and Gomberg5 have discussed various plastics used for this purpose; however, none was sufficiently impermeable to prevent chemical attack of the steel during the developing process. This attack resulted in the production of gross chemical artifacts in the emulsion. It was, therefore, necessary to use the method of Wolfsberg and John6 as follows. A very thin (approximately 1 µ) coating of Plexiglas II was applied by dipping the sample in a 2 pct solution of Plexiglas II in dichloroethylene. Then, because the emulsion will not adhere to Plexiglas 11, a thin coating of Parlodion was applied in a similar manner using 2 pct Parlodion in iso-amyl acetate. Impurity-induced low-temperature recrystallization of cold-worked tungsten was inuestigated with emphasis on the influence of nickel on the reaction. Palladium, nickel, aluminum, manganese, platinum, and iron greatly lower the recrystallization temperature of doped tungsten, which zs normally very high, but the recrystallization temperature of electron-be am zone-refined tungsten wzre is slightly raised by conlacl with nickel. Recrystallization can be induced at low temperature by the presence of solid nickel on the surface of doped tungsten wire, but apparently not by exposure to nickel vapors alone. Approximately 200 ppm of Ni dijjused into 10-mil wires at 1200 from a deposit of nickel on the surface produced total recrystallization, whereas more than 600 ppm of Ni could be absorbed frotn a vapor source without altering the fibrous structure of cold-worked tungsten. Once initiated, nickel-induced recrystallization required a continued source of&apos; nickel for propagation of the recrystallization front. The solubility of nickel in fibrous 10-mil W wire was approximalely 500 ppm at 1150&apos; C, and the activation energy for penetration of the recrystallization front was 52 kcal per mole. In many applications the usefulness of tungsten depends on critical control of its structure. Cold-worked tungsten with the fibrous structure developed by suitable thermo-mechanical treatment has a low, but technologically significant, ductility. It has long been known1 that traces of nickel, and perhaps other metals, are profoundly deleterious in doped tungsten, because they induce recrystallization at low temperature, which produces a brittle, equiaxed grain structure. This effect appears to be an exception to the general observation that recrystallization is impeded and the recrystallization temperature raised by the presence of impurities.2"9 Previous studies7-&apos;&apos; of the annealing and recrystallization of tungsten wire have divided the phenomenon into prior recovery stages, primary recrystallization and secondary recrystallization. The present investigation is concerned principally with primary recrystallization which is defined here as the replacement of the fibrous structure of deformed tungsten by equiaxed grains. The objective of this study was to explore the nickel-induced recrystallization reaction in tungsten and attempt to elucidate its mechanism. As well, an effort to define which other elements give rise to low-temperature-induced recrystallization was carried out. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The procedure adopted for these experiments was essentially to bring nickel and other elements into diffusive contact with cold-worked tungsten wires. The process of recrystallization was followed as a function of time and temperature by light and electron microscopic observations. First the influence of nickel on the recrystallization temperature of arc-melted, zone-refined, and variously doped tungsten wire was determined by electroplating a deposit of nickel on the surface of the wire and annealing at a variety of temperatures for 3 hr. The chemical analyses of the tungsten wires used in this investigation are given in Table I. The surface of the tungsten wire was etched with Murakami&apos;s slution&apos; and approximately 0.005 in, of Ni was deposited from a Watts-type low pH bath14 for the conditions of these experiments. Variations in plating thickness from about 0.001 to 0.005 in. had no discernible influence on the resulting structures. The wires were then annealed in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen to establish the recrystallization temperature. Concurrently, un-plated specimens were annealed to establish the recrystallization characteristics of nickel-free wire. The criterion of recrystallization was that the fibrous structure be completely replaced by equiaxed grains after a 3-hr treatment of temperature. This provided more reproducible results than use of the first recrystallized grain or a fixed proportion of re-crystallized structure as the critical observation. The structures encountered in longitudinal and transverse sections were examined by both light and electron microscopy at magnifications up to X32,000 using parlo-dion-carbon replicas shadowed with platinum for the latter method. Second, the influence of a variety of metals on the recrystallization temperature of 0.010 in. D alumina-silica doped tungsten wire, AW136-64, was determined. The elements were applied by electroplating whenever possible. Alternatively, they were vapor-plated on the tungsten wire and a greater thickness built up by coating with a dispersion of metal powder in nitrocellulose lacquer. Elements not amenable to either of these procedures were merely slurry coated on the tungsten. The recrystallization temperature was determined as above. Third, the nickel-induced recrystallization process in doped wire was studied more closely by electroplating 8 mils of Ni on 65-mil alumina-silica doped tungsten wire, AW153-NS10, and exposing the wire to temperatures of llOO°, 1200°, or 1300°C for various times in a hydrogen atmosphere. A circular recrystallization front, &apos;Onsisting of equiaxed grains, developed at the periphery Of the coated tungsten wire, and the advance of this front into the fibrous interior was studied. St. Joe Minerals Corp. has a long operating history of utilizing rubber-tired, trackless mining equipment in its Southeast Missouri Lead Belt underground mines. The company&apos;s first completely trackless mine, Hayden Creek, was opened in 1952, employing rubber-tired drill jumbos, electric shuttle cars, and articulated diesel trucks. The trucks were comprised of a conventional scraper tractor unit matched with a rear-dump rock wagon. These machines featured the first true earthmover tires to be used underground by St. Joe. The articulated truck concept proved to be very successful, and constitutes an increasing portion of the underground haulage today. St. Joe&apos;s second completely trackless mine, the Indian Creek property, was opened in 1954; conventional 9.1-t (10-st) rear dumps were used for haulage. Main haul roads were designed to be wide and fairly level to accommodate speeds of 32-40 km/h (20-25 mph).

Hofman and Demond, particularly as we observe from their experiments that these gentlemen recognize the usefulness of the Seger cones, and that this method of determining temperatures in the furnaces of the ceramic industry and in the tests of refractory clays is valued, not only in all parts of Germany, but also in other countries. Permit us to say, with reference to the crucibles employed in tests for refractoriness, that we have used of late, besides the magnesia crucibles, also those made of Zettlitz kaolin, with the addition of alumina, previously calcined, with regard to which we beg to refer to our article in the Thonindustrie-Zeitung of December 9, 1893.
