DEWATERING fine coal has been a serious problem to many operators who desired to wet-wash finer sizes and maintain high recovery. Centrifugal driers have become popular for this purpose for sizes between 3/8 in. and 14 mesh. Below 14 mesh the perforated screen centrifuges lose a large per- cent in the effluent solid bowl types that do retain -14 mesh coal, produce excessive degradation, tend to retain the highest ash fraction in any size fraction, and are subject to abrasion, which results in higher maintenance. In 1949 Truax-Traer Coal Co. planned a cyclone installation at their Ceredo preparation plant to recover coal down to 150 mesh with approximately a 14-mesh top size. Since available centrifugal equipment was not considered satisfactory, an investigation of rotary vacuum filters was begun in cooperation with the Peterson Filters and Engineering Co. to determine the suitability of the Peterson Top Feed Reservoir (TFR) filter. This investigation, which is described below, has resulted in a highly satisfactory installation of two 6x10-in. Peterson TFR filters that have been in operation over a year. After some preliminary laboratory batch vacuum filter tests, a pilot plant double-drum Peterson TFR filter was installed at Ceredo to prove the feasibility of vacuum filtration and determine optimum conditions. The full scale units were then installed on the basis of the pilot plant results. This was followed by an extensive research program on vacuum filtration in the laboratory at Northwestern University to investigate basic design and operating variables and their influence on final moisture con- tent of the filter cake. A method of scale-up from laboratory batch tests to the full-size unit was also proposed and proved. Because of the importance of dewatering fine coal today, it was felt that the results of the three steps should be made available for the use of others facing this problem. The work at Northwestern is given in a theoretical section following the discussion of the pilot plant and full- scale operation. Fig. 1 is a flow diagram of the cyclone and filter installation. ONE of the most striking features of the coal series passing from peat through brown coal, lignite, etc., up to anthracite is the gradual reduction of moisture content with the increased coalification of the original plant material. Thus drained peat from a bog may contain 90 per cent water, brown coal contain 50 per cent, lignite 30 per cent, while a bituminous coal may contain only 1 per cent moisture. Moisture, therefore, is one of the important factors to be considered in coal classification, especially with the lower rank coals. With bituminous and higher rank coals the moisture content is less satisfactory for classification; it may even pass a minimum value and then increase with increasing rank to anthracite and superanthracite. Coal in an undisturbed seam contains moisture which is an integral part of the coal, but it may also be wet with free, underground water percolating through the seam. Only the former must be considered in evaluating the moisture content of the coal for classification purposes; this will be called the "true moisture" of the coal. When the seam is mined and sampled the sample taken may show the true moisture; on the contrary, it may contain in addition free mine water or, especially in dry, well ventilated mines, it may contain less than the true moisture. Coal contains unstable organic compounds which may decompose, with the production of moisture, when the coal is exposed to air at ordinary temperatures, or is heated with or without exposure to air. The potential moisture of a coal therefore is higher than its actual moisture. The lower the rank of the coal, the greater its instability, as a rule, and the greater the care necessary to avoid oxidation or decomposition in any investigation of moisture content. The majority of coal workers have preferred, on account of the difficulty in evaluating the true moisture of a coal, and for other reasons, to classify coals by analyses calculated to the dry-coal basis. A number of workers familiar with lower rank coals have recently insisted that the classification of such coals can be satisfactory only if analyses on the moist-coal basis are employed. The moisture-holding capacity of coal is therefore intimately connected with coal classification, and in this paper a procedure is outlined for determining the true moisture of a coal.

The effects of the addition of 0.5 pct ThO2 (by volume) on the grain structure and texture of heavily rolled tungsten sheet were studied. Powder metallurgy ingots were rolled to sheet, 0.001 in. thick, and samples were annealed at temperatures from 1200" to 2500°C. The heating rate to the anneal temperature was varied from 3°C per min to 6500°C per min. The orientations of the largest grains were determined by X-ray diffraction. The disposition and loss of the ThO2 particles were determined by electron transmission microscopy and the activation energy for remozlal of the thorium was measured by mass spec-troscopy. Heating rates below about 800 C per min produced large, highly elongated grains. Higher heating rates produced much smaller, less elongated grains. The grain structure and texture of the slowly heated samples were identical to the structures and textures of heavily rolled tungsten foil conventionally doped with aluminum, silicon, and potassium but the recrystallization temperature was about 200°C lower. There was stringer-like dispersion of larger ThO2, particles superimposed on a uniform dispersion of fine particles. The particles increased in size and decreased in number with time at temperature. The loss of particles was accompanied by formation of grain boundary voids and surface pits. The activation energy for removal of the ThO2 was about 40 kcal per mole. THE addition of small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium to tungsten has a profound effect on the grain structure of heavily rolled sheet1 or drawn wire."4 Thus, "doped" tungsten sheet, rolled to 0.001 in. and recrystallized, develops a structure consisting of large, highly elongated grains of a specific preferred orientation.' It has been shown that the elongated grain structure was caused by a dispersion of particles, identified as mullite (Al6si2O13),1,4 in strings parallel to the rolling direction in sheet or to the wire axis. Identical results were obtained for iron which was doped with glass and rolled to 99 pct reduction of thickness and recrystallized.5 Again, the glass particles were disposed in strings parallel to the rolling direction. The strings retarded boundary migration in the lateral direction but grain growth was able to proceed relatively unhindered along the direction parallel to the strings.1,5 In both the doped tungsten and the glass-doped iron, the particles were highly plastic during the high-temperature deformation. Since mullite melts at about 1800°C and the glass employed melts at about 810ºC, the particles were probably molten during the recrystallization anneals (above 1800°C for the doped tungsten and 850°C for the glass-doped iron). There are indications in the literature that particles not plastic at hot-working temperatures (up to about 1550°C for tungsten) may also impart elongated grain structures by primary recrystallization of worked alloys. Examples are dispersions of tantalum carbide in chromium,6 and ThO2 in nickel where elongation ratios of recrystallization grains of up to 20:l were obtained.7 Strings of ThO2 particles in W-ThO2 wire have been seen by Rieck.8 In view of the available evidence, it was of interest to extend the previous studies of doped tungsten and glass-doped iron to include W-ThO2 sheet materials. Of specific interest was the grain structure, preferred orientation, recrystallization temperature, and disposition of the thoria particles. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Material Preparation. About 380 g of blue tungsten oxide (approximate composition WO3) was wet with a sufficient amount of aqueous solution of Th(N03)4 to provide 0.5 vol pct ThO2. The wet mixture was stirred to distribute the doping material uniformly throughout the powder. Stirring was continued while the mixture was heated until it was completely dry. The dried, doped mixture was then reduced to tungsten powder by heating at 850°C for 2 hr in a stream of dry hydrogen. The doped tungsten powder was hydropressed in a rubber sack at pressures of 50,000 psi to produce an ingot approximately 2 cm diam by about 5 cm long. Next, the pressed cylinder was heated in hydrogen for 2 hr at 1350°C to render it strong enough for machining. The cylinder was machined to a square cross section of 1.6 by 1.6 cm with rounded corners. Finally, the bar was heated for 2 hr at 2150°C in hydrogen to provide a sufficiently dense mate rial to withstand the hot-rolling operation. Prior to rolling, the ingot was reduced in thickness by about 20 pct by forging at 1550°C. This served to increase the density of the material and to widen it slightly for better rolling characteristics. The forged ingot was then rolled at 1550°C to a reduction of 45 pct of thickness, following which the rolling temperature was reduced to 1300°C and the slab rolled, with several reheats, to 0.050 in. Further reduction was accomplished at 800°C in tungsten sheet packs to a total reduction of about 99.85 pct. B) Annealing Treatment and Observation of Structure. Small samples of the rolled foil were annealed in one of two ways. Some of the samples were suspended in a covered tungsten can and annealed at temperatures from 1200" to 2200°C for various times in vacuum of l0-7 to 10-6 mm Hg. During recent years considerable interest has been focused on the energy-absorption characteristics of metal when it is cyclically stressed in vibration. The most familiar manifestation of this phenomenon, which is called the "damping capacity" or "internal friction" 06 a material, is involved in the dissipation of mechanical energy of vibration, which otherwise would build up to stress levels where the problems of noise and fatigue are involved. In addition to its engineering importance in structures, the damping behavior of metals, particularly at low stress amplitudes, has also been used as a unique metallurgical research tool with which to provide sensitive means for indicating certain structural changes within metals. Important contributions toward understanding the energy-dissipating -mecha-nisms that are responsible for internal friction in metals have been made in the last few years. The information is not yet sufficiently extensive, however, to provide a useful metallurgical concept describing exactly how the structure affects the internal friction, or to encourage more general use of this technique among metallurgists. Three fundamental mechanisms have been proposed, as a result of recent experi- mental investigations, to account for the internal friction in nonferrous metals in low-stress amplitude tests. These include damping due to internal thermal currents that are created and flow in metal because of differential vibratory stress effects,' damping due to localized inelastic stress relaxation at inhomogeneities within the meta1,2,3 and damping related to plastic flow of a localized type for which an explanation has been sought in terms of the dislocation theory.' How each of these mechanisms functions as a result of structural changes in the metal is, in general, not well understood because of insufficient experimental data for which the controlling variables ham been segregated and because of uncertainties in regard to the nature of the structural changes themselves. In several investigations the effects of cold-working on the internal friction of polycrystalline brass and aluminum have been described. As reported by Köster and Rosenthal,5 and by Förster and Breitfield,6 there is an initial large increase in the damping when the metal is worked. The initial high value is not stable, but declines rapidly, at first, in a hyperbolic manner. About Ioo hr. after straining, a stable value is reached of magnitude proportional to the amount of strain.' In Fig. I is shown the relationship found by Zener and his collaborators between the internal friction due to cold-working of alpha brass and the amount of cold-working.8 Several investigators have made internal-friction measurements on worked poly-

(communication to the Secretary*).-The paper by Mr. Haas will no doubt be followed with considerable interest, as it covers the power-plant problem in quite a comprehensive way, including not only the usual operating costs but also the fixed charges on the investment, and for load factors ranging all the way from 25 to 100 per cent. and fuel oil ranging from $1.25 to $2 per barrel. The very fact, however, that his paper does cover such a wide range of conditions, makes it the more imperative that any conclusion drawn from his analysis be very carefully considered for any specific case, for in making such analysis the type of prime mover and size must be selected for some one condition which might not be the proper selection had some other condition been assumed as the basic one, resulting in an unfavorable comparison under all conditions except that condition assumed. THE importance of the Donets coal field (the Donbas) to the national economy of the Soviet Union is well known. Great as was the significance of this tremendous deposit of coal in prewar days it is destined to become an even greater factor in the economic life of the country now that the tremendous havoc wrought by the Germans is being remedied. Since the war began, new coal fields have been extended; for example output of the Moscow and Karaganda (Kazakhstan) fields has become considerably larger while new mines are producing coal in several parts of Uzbekistan and Kirghizia. The huge West Siberian coal field, the Kuznetsk Basin, is producing more coal than ever before to supply the industries of that region and of the Urals. But so great has been the development of industry to meet war needs, especially in those districts of the Soviet Union that lie to the East of the Urals, that the coal obtained, eked out by such locally-won fuels as peat and wood, is still barely sufficient to meet industrial requirements. The main burden of the coal supply for the restored industries of the West, therefore, will fall on the Donbas.

The temperature dependence of the rate of grain boundary migration was measured in bicrystals of zone-refined lead containing from 20 to less than 1 ppm by wezght of tin. The apparent activation energy in the temperature range from 320" to 200oC is markedly dependent upon the solute tin concentration and upon the orientation relationship of the grains adjacent to the grain boundavy. The quantitative experimental observat~ons are compared with the predictions of various theories of grain boundary migration. In previous work.&apos;?&apos; the mobility of individual grain boundaries was studied as a function of impurity concentration and type of boundary. Grain boundary migration occurred at the expense of dislocation arrays which were introduced into the specimen during solidification. Boundary mobility in zone-refined lead at 300°C was markedly decreased by small additions of tin. 0.004 wt pct being sufficient to decrease the rate of grain boundary migration by a factor of 1000. The mobility of grain boundaries having polar orientation relationships near 38 and 22 deg about <Ill>, and 28 deg about <100>, was much less sensitive to tin concentration in the range studied. As a result, these boundaries have relatively high mobilities. The present paper is a continuation of the above study. Data are now presented on the temperature dependence of the motion of individual grain boundaries in zone-refined lead as a function of solute tin concentration and orientation relationship of adjacent grains at the grain boundary. The experimental observations are compared with the predictions of a number of theories of grain boundary migration3-8 which, prior to the present experimental investigation, could not be critically evaluated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The striation or lineage structure of melt-grown single crystals of zone-refined lead, containing various additions of tin, was utilized to provide a driving force for grain boundary migration, as previously described.1,2 Each grain boundary under study separated the striated single crystal from another grain which was introduced by localized plastic deformation and recrystallization of a small region of the sample. The speed of migration of grain boundaries in dilute alloys of tin in zone-refined lead was investigated as a function of 1) tin concentration from < 0.0001 to 0.002 wt pct, 2) temperature in the range of 200" to 320°C, and 3) orientation relationship of the adjacent grains at the grain boundary. The substructure driving energy available for grain boundary migration was estimated to be about 4000 ergs per cu cm, within a factor of two, from specimen to specimen.&apos; The specimen dimensions, and growth and alloying procedures for the preparation of striated single crystals of lead of known tin composition, were as described previously.&apos; Each bicrystal was carefully wrapped in aluminum foil, and annealed in a well-stirred salt bath consisting of 50 pct NaNO2 and 50 pct KNO3, for known periods of time at a series of constant temperatures (*2°C). The grain boundary positions, before and after each anneal, were determined by etching lightly in a solution of 5 pct nitric acid in methyl alcohol, in order to follow the motion of the boundary and determine its rate of migration. Thus, the rate of motion of the grain boundary in a single specimen was measured at various temperatures. The above procedure was carried out for each grain boundary in seventeen different bicrystal specimens.

In a former paper (Runs., xxi., 286) I described the plant of the Marsac Refinery, and the manipulations of the process, but cou1d not, at the time, give reliable statistical results. To supply the latter is the object of the present paper. I shall give actual facts as correctly as possible, without any bias one way or the other. For all statistics I am indebted to Mr. W. G. Lamb, who has charge of the Marsac lixiviation-plant and refinery; to Mr. A. Luebeck, assayer at the Ontario mill; and to the Daly Office, Salt Lake City.* Before starting on the work of the year 1892, a most careful clean-up was made, and any remnants were charged to the refinery. During 1892 the Marsac lixiviation-works produced 48.8 tons of so-called "regular" sulphides, which contained, on an average, 11,449 ounces of silver per ton; 11.77 ounces of gold per ton; and 569.8 pounds of copper per ton. To this must be added, 266 pounds of sulphides and by-products left over from the product of 1891, which contained 1380 ounces of silver, 1.41 ounces of gold, and 63 pounds of copper. Before giving the results of the clean-up, a general discussion of the items of expense, methods of assaying, etc., is desirable.

STUDY of the plasticity of germanium or other semiconductor crystals affords unusual opportunities to extend our knowledge of deformation mechanisms. Crystals are available having extraordinary perfection and very high purity. They deform by slip on the systems {111} <110>,1-3 as do crystals of the simple face-centered-cubic structure. Dislocations generated in them during slip are easily revealed in the form of etch pits on either (111) or (100) surfaces.4,5 This fact alone makes possible more detailed studies of mechanisms than is usually the case with metals but, even further, the effect of deformation on their electrical conductivity is very large compared with metals. This comes about not only because the mobility of the charge carriers is reduced, as in deformed metals, but also because the number of these carriers is greatly altered. This latter effect seems closely related to the formation of both line and point imperfections during deformation and thus provides a needed tool for the study of the kinds and distributions of these imperfections. Other investigators have deformed germanium at elevated temperatures by bending,1, 6-8 compres-sion,6, 0,10 tension,2,3,6,11,12 torsion,23 and indentation." Wang and Alexander" have also reported successful indentation at room temperature. Dislocation etch pits consequent to deformation have been observed and studied.7,8,10,18,14,20 The experiments to be de- scribed here include principally the compression and the subsequent annealing of germanium with concomitant studies of etch pits, microstructures, and electrical properties. Both single crystals and heavily twinned specimens were used. Some indentation studies are included. Experimental Methods Plastic compression was effected in the apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consists of two tantalum platens contained in a helium atmosphere and so arranged that pressure can be applied by a hydraulic press. The specimen between the platens is heated by the surrounding furnace. The specimen is usually a small crystal cube about 0.30 in. on an edge. A control specimen is always inserted so, that it is subject to the same thermal cycle as the one being deformed. This serves to detect any impurity contamination that might accompany the thermal treatment. For high temperature work, where such impurity contamination often occurs, the specimens were first plated with gold whenever subsequent electrical properties were to be determined. This method" is effective in preventing significant contamination of germanium up to temperatures at least as high as 750°C, as evidenced by the constancy of the electrical conductivities of control specimens subjected to the same heat treatments. The total range of temperature used for deformation was from 375°C, the lowest at which significant flow was observed, up to 900°C. THERE are three chief production zones of tungsten ore in China. In the Province of Kiangsi mines are located at Kanchow, East River, and West River. Their combined production is understood to amount to 300 to 350 tons of ore per month, and their original exportation is made through the port of Kiukiang, largely to Shanghai. The second zone is in Kwangtung Province, the mines there being at Tayulin. Produc-tion reaches about 200 tons per month and cargo is gen-erally exported through the port of Hong Kong. In the Province of Hunan approximately 25 tons of ore are produced monthly in the mines at Ton-on. Tungsten ore from Kiangsi and Kwangtung Prov-inces is generally about 70 per cent WO, (tungstic acid), while that from Hunan is of lower quality, run-ning about 65 per cent WO3. Kiangsi ore is received from the mines in 100-1b. and Hunan in 224-lb. gunny sacks. No repacking is done except as it is made neces-sary by the condition of the sacks. Kiangsi Province contains the Chinese districts pro-ducing the largest amount of salable wolframite or tungsten. Many districts west and south of Kiangsi have been found to have wolframite deposits.-Com-merce Reports.

THE revision of this chapter has presented a problem in that heavy-medium jigging has come into the picture since the chapter was originally written (seven years ago), a practice in which an artificial medium is built up and maintained in the jig circuit. As this development makes the jig a "true" heavy-medium process, the method belongs in the chapter dealing with such processes. Although putting this development in its proper position in the book involves some repetition, this seems to be the best procedure, and it has been followed. As the chapter on jigs in its original form was intended to be more or less a handbook on jigging for the use of the practical man, and the great bulk of the material therein is still generally applicable, the text has been re-used in large measure. Two major changes should be noted: (1) the portion of the text relating to the refuse-withdrawing mechanism of the McNally-Pittsburg jig has been entirely rewritten, and (2) a description of the hutch valves on the Jeffrey jigs has been added. Jigging is the stratification of a mass of solid particles in upward and downward pulsations. The stratification usually is effected in a rectangular open-top container having a perforated bottom through which the pulsations of water are applied to the materials to be separated; in separating coal, to a mass of coal and refuse. Jigging usually is a continuous process involving three steps: (1) the reception of the raw coal, (2) the stratification of the coal and refuse so that the refuse settles to the screen plate, and (3) the overflow of the cleaned coal and the withdrawal of the refuse collected on the screen. The jig is the most universal washer ever devised. It is handling in practice a wide range of closely sized coals and ores, mixed sizes of coal from 8-in. to 0 through 3/4-in. to 0, and mixed sizes of ores down to 7/32-in. to 0and even smaller. It is treating materials ranging in specific gravity from that of gold at 19 to that of coal at 1.30. It is handling feeds in which the proportions of high-gravity materials range from 90 per cent or higher, as for some iron ores, to 10 per cent or less for some coals. It is handling feeds containing all shapes of particles-round, rectangular, and flat. It is handling simple separation problems and difficult separation problems.

A simple graphical technique is presented for rapidly determining the ratio of resolved shear stress on slip systems in single crystals to the applied stress (Schmid factor) for various simple states of stress. Master plots are presented which, when used in conjunction with an appropriate stereo-graphic projection, allow one to determine the Schmid factor for all slip systems in a crystal of given orientation. It is shown that one such plot suffices for simple tension or compression, flex-ural bending, and biaxial compression, while a combination of two different plots must be used for torsion and simple shear. STUDIES of the deformation behavior of single crystals are most valuable when the applied stresses are resolved onto the various slip systems of the crystal. A careful study of the available slip systems and proper selection of the state of stress used and the specimen orientation can then yield quantitative information about the probability of specific dislocation reactions, the strength of barriers to plastic flow, and the mechanisms of yielding and flow in general. It is the purpose of this work to analyze some common states of stress used in deformation studies and to present a simplified way of determining for these cases the ratio of the resolved shear stress on the slip systems to the applied stress (Schmid factor). I) CALCULATIONS We first define two orthogonal coordinate systems: one based on the specimen geometry (a right circular cylinder of radius, R, is considered here) and one based on the particular slip system of interest. The unit vectors and angles specifying the two coordinate systems and the relationship between them are listed in Table I. The relationships among the various angles and unit vectors are shown on a stereographic projection in Fig. 1. INTRODUCTION The purpose of coal preparation is to improve the quality of coal to make it suitable for a specific purpose by (1 ) cleaning to remove inorganic impurities; (2) sizing-crushing or screening, or both; or (3) special treatment, such as dedusting. The properties and quantities of impurities in coal are of major importance in the design and operation of steam generating equipment. Al- though boilers are often designed and equipped to use a wide range of coals, no boiler will perform equally well with all types of coals. All coals have certain properties that place limitations on their most advantageous use. These limitations are especially stringent for many of the older installations. Because of a general lowering of quality of raw coal in recent years, the need for coal cleaning has significantly increased. Among the factors contributing to the need for increased coal preparation are (1) increased demand for quality brought on by market and environmental requirements; (2) increased extraneous dilution caused by mine, health, and safety laws; and (3) depletion of the higher-quality coal seams.

The mechanism of hardening in heat-treatable zirconium alloys was foUNd to be analogous to that for titanium alloys. Zirconium containing a relatively large addition of a ß -stabilizing element such as molybdenum or columbium can be hardened by the following transformation: Lean alloys, having insufficient alloy content to retain ß at room temperature are hardened by the following transformation: Application of these findings in Zr-Mo-Sn and Zr-Nb-Sn alloys produced strengths as high as 190,000 psi with reasonable ductility. PRIOR research on zirconium alloys has been concerned with development of greater strengths and creep resistance by solid-solution hardening or by dispersion hardening. Although solution and aging heat treatments had been applied earlier to zirconium alloys, quenching frequently produced low ductility. The possibility that the ß-to-w transformation, discovered earlier in titanium alloys,&apos; might also occur in zirconium alloys and cause low ductility was considered, and, indeed, was found as predicted2 to be the case. In the earliest experiments, the heat-treatment response of titanium, too, was disappointing. However, by avoiding the formation of the embrittling w phase, it became practical to obtain room-temperature strengths higher than 180,000 psi, with elongation values of 10 pct.3 Based on the present concept of titanium heat treatment, the principal requirement for a heat-treatable zirconium alloy is that it contains a certain minimum amount of one or more ß -stabilizing elements. Only molybdenum, columbium, and tantalum, when present in sufficient amounts, are known to stabilize ß zirconium to room temperature during rapid cooling from the ß field. Tantalum was undesirable because of its high thermal-neutron cross section. Aluminum and tin are effective a stabilizers, but aluminum has been shown to seriously decrease the corrosion resistance of simple zirconium alloys in hot water. Therefore, for the present study, tin was used as the stabilizer addition. The alloys selected for this evaluation are presented in Table 1 along with their analyses and ß-transus temperatures. No. 425, 12,000 words.)—This paper describes a research project undertaken to provide a means of studying the behavior of weighty structures such as mines, dams, foundations, etc., with models of the same material in the laboratory. The paper shows that in general it can be done. The underlying theory is explained, the apparatus which was developed and built to do this is described, and the results of laboratory experiments with sandstone mine structures are given. There is discussion of the accuracy of results with the present equipment, the model size necessary, and of the size and type of equipment necessary for the obtaining of results of practical value in the field. Milling and Concentration Ball Mill Studies, I. By A. W. Fahrenwald and Harold E. Lee. (Tech. Pub. No. 375. 25,000 words.)—This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental study of some of the numerous elements entering into ball mill grinding. All apparatus used was equipped with ball bearings. Every experiment was accompanied by a power measurement accurate to 0.005 hp. Quartz was used. Each element studied, such as ball load, was varied systematically. Power curves were obtained for the mill for three general sets of conditions; namely, (1) balls only (2) balls and quartz and (3) balls, quartz and water. For each general condition, power curves were obtained for various mill speeds, ball loads and ball sizes. For conditions 2 and 3, feed sizc and weight and pulp dilution also were studied as variables. The mill output, in grams of finished product per unit of time, was obtained for each test. More than 400 members and guests registered for the 146th General Meeting of the Institute held in Mexico City Nov. 9 to 15, inclusive. Of these, 250 came by special train or automobile from 24 states of the Union, and the others were resident in Mexico. Mexican Government officials, headed by Manuel Santillan, Sub- secretary of the Department of National Economy, acting in. behalf of the President of the Republic, and including the Secretary of Foreign Relations and the Governor of the Federal District, were most hospitable in their official welcome and provided splendid entertainment of various kinds. A reception was tendered by Hon. Josephus Daniels at the U. S. Embassy. Among other hosts were officials of a number of large operating companies, including M. H. Kuryla, of the Real del Monte company; Jules Lacaud, of the CompaiLia Minera de Chontalpan; and Harry Wright, of the Consolidated Steel company.

The Al-1.0 pct Mg alloy 565 7 was studied using optical microscopy and electron microprobe X-ray analysis. Constituent particles were found to exist inter-dendritically in the as-cast material in a region of precipitate free a -aluminum. Five phases besides a fine precipitate and a-Al were identified in the cast structure: Fel3, Fe2Al7, Mg2Al3, CUMgAl2, and Cu2FeAl7. Thermal treatments conducted for 100 hr at 1180°, 1130°, 1080°, 1030°, 980°, and 880° F revealed a general dissolution and spheroidization of the in-terdendritic constituent network observed in the cast structure. The principal constituents present in the thermally treated structures were FeAl3 and Fe2Al7 with the relative amount of Fe2A17 to FeAl3 increasing with a decrease in the treatment temperature. The phases Present in the wrought structure were identical to those observed after the thermal treatments, with the constituent particles strung out in the direction of rolling. ALLOY 5657 is a nonheat-treatable commercial purity Al-1.0 pct Mg alloy utilized extensively because of its bright finishing characteristics. This investigation was conducted to determine the constituents present in 5657 alloy, and to study the effect of extended thermal treatments on morphology. Numerous studies have been carried out to establish the equilibrium diagrams for various aluminum systems,1-3 with phase identification based on X-ray analysis, morphology, and the etching response of relatively large particles. Phragmen4 conducted a study of the phases in aluminum eutectic systems and compiled a "corrected" table of etching responses, drawing on his work plus that of Schrader,5 Keller and Wilcox,6 and Mondolfo.7 A review of the original work of Keller and Wilcox, and Mondolfo, which was concerned with the constituents found in commercial alloys, reveals that in numerous cases their etching responses differ from those reported by Phragmen and from each other. These inconsistencies may occur because a specific constituent will react to a given etch in a varying manner depending upon its size, the elements dissolved in the phase, the other constituents surrounding a phase, and the solute content of the matrix. Work with a commercial orientation was conducted on alloys 2024 and 3003 by Sperry8,9 and on alloy 3003 by Barker,10 where the relationship between the phase diagram and the nonequilibrium structure of an alloy was examined. Backerud11 investigated the A1-Fe binary system and found that at high cooling rates the equilibrium eutectic reaction forming a-A1 and FeA13 is replaced by another lower temperature eutectic reaction forming a-A1 and metastable FeAl6, a constituent first identified by Hollingsworth et al.12 Most of the above mentioned studies were conducted on materials having a significantly greater alloy content than 5657 alloy, where the relatively small size and sparse distribution of second phase particles hinders the process of identifying constituents. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material with a composition as given in Table I was examined in the as-direct chill cast, hot rolled and cold rolled conditions, and after thermal treatment of the cast structure. Thermal treatments were terminated by a water quench. Microscopic examination was conducted under various lighting conditions following the application of standard etchants as specified in Table 11. A semi-quantitative electron microprobe X-ray analysis was conducted for Al, Mg, Fe, Cu, Si, Zn, and Ti. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Microstructure of the As-Cast Material. Particles of second phase material were found to exist inter-dendritically, principally in regions of precipitate free a-Al, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Adjacent to the ingot edge was a region of inverse segregation, resulting in an increased amount of second phase material containing large sized particles which aided in phase identification. Phase Identification. Cast Structure. Five phases besides a-Al and a fine precipitate were identified using optical microscopy and electron microprobe X-ray analysis, as presented in Tables II and III, respectively. FeA13 and Fe2A17 are often found with Fe2A17 forming a sheath around the core of FeAl3, resulting from an incomplete peritectoid reaction. These phases have a nearly identical appearance under white light, although they are easily differentiated under crossed polarizers, as characteristically illustrated in Figs. 2(a) and 2(b), respectively. There is probably no subject for study in the metallurgy of iron and steel of greater interest than the effect of manganese upon the properties of iron. Some of the peculiarities of iron and steel containing appreciable quantities of manganese were observed many years ago by Heath, Robert Mushet, and others; but it was not until the introduction of the Bessemer process, when a demand was created for large quantities of iron-manganese alloys, that such compounds of iron and manganese became articles of commerce. Since that time the demand for these alloys has steadily increased, the use of ferro-manganese not only becoming an absolute necessity in the ordinary Bessemer practice, but also essential to the manufacture of open-hearth, crucible steel and steel castings; in fact it is the only source of supply for all the manganese used in metallurgical opera-

In conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructures of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact. Survey of Previous Work in Studying Extrusion Defects Very little has been published concerning defects in extruded and forged brass. In 1921, R. Genders1 $ delivered a paper before the British Institute of Metals, relative to a defect inherent in the extrusion process. This defect, commonly found in extruded brass rod, shows up in the form of a circle in a transverse section consisting of oxides and impurities, and is generally present in the last 25 to 30 per cent of the rod. Genders concluded that the defect is caused by the turning inward of the skin of the billet at the edge of the plunger because the inside of the billet is more plastic than the outside, which is in contact with the cooler container; the outside skin will lag behind to form the rear end of the rod. Genders suggested a movable die as a remedy, and while this met with fair success, it is not used in present practice. About the same time as Genders&apos; experiments, Tucker2 and Rosen-hain3 conducted experiments using colored plasticene in the form of a billet, and found much the same defect as Genders. THE problem of making a building unit combining the necessary physical and mechanical properties and good thermal insulation has been foremost in the minds of architects and ceramic and construction engineers for many years. This paper presents the results of studies on thermally expanding shales or clays to produce light-weight cellular products suitable for making building units. An expanded clay block suitable for building purposes should be large enough so that substantial savings may be effected in labor costs in laying the wall. The permeability should be low and it should have sufficiently good "dry-wall" characteristics to permit exposing the exterior surface to the elements, and to permit plastering directly the inside wall surface. The thermal conductivity should be low and the mechanical properties should be adequate. Obviously, a unit possessing satisfactory qualities for constructing an outside wall would be satisfactory for interior walls and for back-up purposes. The results of studies on bloating various shales or clays† and the properties of the expanded products are reported. In another paper1 basic factors involved in bloating of clays are discussed. Manufacturers of ceramic products, particularly structural clay, may encounter bloating of the ware during burning, and precautions must be followed to avoid this phenomenon. About 1927 the C. F. Burgess Laboratories, Madison, Wis., while carrying on an investigation for the American Face Brick Research Corporation, conceived the idea of intentionally bloating clay while holding it in a restrained condition, with the hope of producing a unitary cellular mass. Work was carried on until about 1931, when studies were terminated because of business conditions. These studies were continued later by The Western Brick Co., Danville, Ill., which developed a process of "inwardly expansive bloating." The major purpose of the latter investigation was to produce back-up tile to compete with concrete blocks made from Haydite or cinder aggregate. Haydite is a light-weight aggregate formed by heating certain clays or shales rapidly in a rotary kiln. While the investigations at the C. F. Burgess Laboratories or at Western Brick Co. were not carried far enough to lead to the commercial production of material for the construction of walls, particularly outside walls, they showed that certain clays could be thermally expanded and that it was possible to produce a material of low permeability with a large percentage of the total voids or cells closed. Commencing in 1939, the Ozark Chemical Co. sponsored a research program at Battelle Memorial Institute for the purpose of determining whether it is technically feasible to make thermally expanded building units, and specifically to get answers to the following questions:
